New to Horse Racing Bets? Here’s What to Know Before the Derby

If you're feeling lucky and thinking about placing a bet for this weekend’s Kentucky Derby, NBC has tips for you. The basics? Start simple: win, place, or show bets are easiest to understand. Want to bet smarter? Do a little homework on jockeys and track conditions. Oh, and keep your eye on ‘Journalism’, currently the favorite at 7-2 odds, followed by Sandman (5-1), American Promise (8-1) and Sovereignty (11-1).

Man Rescued from Mount Fuji Twice in One Week

A 27-year-old university student in Japan had an adventure he definitely didn’t plan for. He was first airlifted from Mount Fuji’s summit after getting stranded in poor conditions. Then, a few days later, he returned to the mountain—to retrieve his lost phone—and had to be rescued AGAIN, this time carried down the mountain on a stretcher. Japanese officials say he's lucky to be alive and advised others to maybe just let the phone go next time.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Give us three minutes and we'll give you everything you
need to know for the day with Anina's what's trending?

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Will you be participating this weekend with a big fancy
hat because you know what time it is?

Speaker 1 (00:08):
Well, and I guess, I guess, and I guess, and
I guess it's Saturday.

Speaker 3 (00:12):
Yeah, Saturday with the mint and Julip in your season. Season,
Every Saturday is fancy Saturday at my house is for clowns.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
I see. This one would be the Kentucky Derby, the
first of the three Triple Crown events if you pay
attention to horse racing. Last year Mystic Dan won the weekend,
which is kind of cute. I love the names of
the horses. I think that's my favorite part, even more
than the hats. This year also, Citizen Bulls gonna be
participating Sandman wait for it, final gambit. Actually there's really

(00:42):
not any crazy names flying Mohawk. But how do you
look at a horse and you say, oh my gosh,
you beautiful like thing. I'm gonna name you Luxer Cafe.
I'm gonna name you.

Speaker 4 (00:54):
Lu You got to understand how much money it takes
to purchase a horse. So when you look at that
fact that it takes millions of dollars to do this operation. Yeah,
that person's probably not given a crap about that horse.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
Yeah, it kind of makes me sad. I started watching
the show called wind Fire on It's on Netflix. It's
an old, old show, but it's all about horse racing.
So I've been really in the trenches. And they love
those horses. I hope that they do that in real
life too.

Speaker 4 (01:20):
The people who take care of the horses love them.
The people who name them and purchase them couldn't care less. Yeah, yeah,
get that money. It needs a new pair of shoe.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
So I love to own a racehorse though. Yeah, I
could see you owning a race horse. I could see
you going to the derby jockey too, Yeah, jockey owner.
I don't know if any of those I don't know
if they have.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Yeah, this show really shows how jockeys work it too.
They've got to like work the circuit. They get picked
and you don't guarantee to race once you become a jockey.
It's like a hard life to business of life as
a jockey. Yeah, yeah, it's really interesting. I highly recommend
the show wind Fire.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
It's really good. I think I'm saying the name right. Also,
we'll move on.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
So there's this guy who's trying right now because he
got rescued from Mount Fuji twice in one week. So
first he got airlifted from Mount Fuji. Then the second
time he got airlifted because he had to go back
to get his cell phone that he left on Mount Fuji. Wait,
they actually they took him to go get his cell phone.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
Yeah, who actually took him to get it?

Speaker 2 (02:20):
No, he went back to go get his phone, and
then he got stuck up there because he got altitude sickness.
So four days later, the rescuers went back to get
the same guy that they got the first time because
he forgot his phone.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
Did they charge him?

Speaker 2 (02:33):
They did not charge him.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
He should have absolutely charged him for the resources it
took to do that. That's absolutely ridiculous. Get a new phone,
it does say.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
The rescue led to outrage on social media, which for
the man to have picked to pay for the cost
to bring him back down.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
Well, how is he going to post his TikTok if
he didn't have his phone?

Speaker 1 (02:49):
He probably had some really good selfies on there here
on the top here on Mount Fuji.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
Ya The crazy part is the phone was still there,
like not that anybody was walk away.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
I'm just gonna take up there.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
They're going to fall. I mean, I feel like the
terrain is not just flat.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
Was probably on like on the ground. It wasn't standing
up or something. And how did you find it?

Speaker 2 (03:09):
You got a little compass that says northeast is where
my phone is.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
On my phone, I think if it's an iPhone, works
pretty well. Yeah, but how do you track it?

Speaker 2 (03:16):
Oh? If I guess he has a watch anyway? All right, Well,
you guys are smart, and that's crazy.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
He knew where he.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
Left it, like he's like, I'm gonna sit down right here,
and then forgot about it when he had got airlifted.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
That's how he called the airlift.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
So thankfully he went back for it.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
He was able to.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
Call the air of people again. No, somebody else called
nine one one because he got altitude thickness.

Speaker 3 (03:37):
Altitude sickness is no joke. So there's that makes you
feel real weird. What happened? You lose all motor functions? Really? Yeah?
That kind of past. You got it when you were
up in a plane because you're a pilot. No, no,
not no, I'm smarter than that.

Speaker 4 (03:51):
I'm not gonna put myself in danger when I'm pilaly
going a plane with you and it Nina, I can.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Say, I've been in your plane.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
Can't you do that? I appreciate it, Yeah, because you
could watter function.

Speaker 4 (04:00):
Day you lose motor function, so you're like, you're like,
what is my hands or those knives or fingers my pants?

Speaker 1 (04:06):
So you don't know it till later, Like, yeah, I
get out the new sickness all the time. If that's
the case.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
The fourth floor and he's like, oh no, my goodness,
my pants.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
You guys getting this altitude sickness up here on the
fourth floor.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
In the middle of the desert.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
Nothing's going on.

Speaker 4 (04:27):
Back to jockey Jubil. He gets on a tall horse.
He's like, oh no, oh no, tickled my horse. That's
horse horses walking around doing it. Yeah, yeah, but you
wanted it on the horse.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
Now you got to get the horse bath, and I
know you was not going to get the horse bath.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
He's a good point. I can give his belly a
little little bit of a bath. Have to jump a
lot the other day, the exact same
