If you know S.E. you’ll know she loves her coffee (and loves it a certain way). In honor of this … obsession, Off the Cupp is trying something new — a mini episode all about interesting, strange, and funny coffee news. On this episode, S.E. and her producers, Derrick and Lauren, talk about some very wild new trends in the coffee world (and their strong opinions about them) as well as — did anyone else know about this? — coffee competitions! So many. They get into so much more. It’s fun, come take a sip.

Speaker 1 (00:03):
So you guys know, as my as my producers, there
are just a few things I really love talking about
all the time.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
None of them are politics. Uh Bravo this one.

Speaker 1 (00:12):
Talk all day about Bravo, mental health, love love that,
and coffee. Coffee, Absolutely, I never tire of talking about coffee.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
What else can be said about coffee?

Speaker 2 (00:30):
I know that's so good. That's a huge part of
my life. It is my identity.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
I think it's my entire personality. But that's because I
grew up in New England.

Speaker 4 (00:39):
You've been baptized into the I was SIPs of coffee.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
I was baptized by the by the Duncan Donuts John John,
the baptist of Duncan Donuts. Is that Ben Affleck, Yes,
yes it is, Yes it is Derek.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Uh So I'm here with my producers, Lauren and Derek.

Speaker 4 (00:59):
Hello, Laura.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Lauren's a longtime coffee drinker.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
Oh for sure.

Speaker 5 (01:02):
I also grew up in New England, so I also
got started on Dunkin Donuts iced coffee light and sweet,
which is basically ice cream.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
Yes, it is so insanely sweet.

Speaker 5 (01:14):
I couldn't like what I liked. This was pre syrup.
There was no syrup back in the day, the only
way to go. And I loved the chunk of sugar
at the bottom.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Yea, that my straw.

Speaker 5 (01:24):
Would suck up. Like that's what I was, sugar, just
haul chunks.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
So she's in the religion, she's in the cults. Derek,
you're sort of new.

Speaker 4 (01:32):
Talking as we talked about Yeah, I mean I'm new.
I'm new to coffee.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
I'm a new convert and like, I mean, don't you
wish you could go back and try Lauren your sip
of coffee.

Speaker 5 (01:41):
It was also so bastardized, Derek. I really liked that
you said that you tried it blast.

Speaker 4 (01:47):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (01:47):
Yeah, Like I don't think I had my first sip
of black coffee until I was had to be I'm
going to say, in my thirties, Like.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
That's for adults.

Speaker 5 (01:56):
Yeah, for sure, Like I thought I was drinking coffee,
but again, it really just like ice cream.

Speaker 4 (02:01):
I mean, Lauren, me too. I was also in my thirties,
but it was when I had well it was I
in my thirties. I was in my thirties. Yeah, I
was when I had my first cup of coffee.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
Sa.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
So you tried a black but how do you prefer
it now.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
I have it with no sugar, but some milk milk.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
Okay, Okay. I have a friend.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
I have a friend, like one of my best friends
from college Lyle and he swears he likes coffee, but
you wouldn't know it by what he puts in it,
because it tastes nothing like coffee.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
When he's done, it's cinnamon and nutmeg and whipped cream.
And I don't think he actually likes coffee. No, it's
just like it, which is fine.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
He's trying. He used, maybe it's just for your friendship,
but it's maybe maybe.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
But it's like it's the same as steak for me.
I want to taste the steak. I don't want it
with sauce on it. Leave that ship to the side.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
I want to taste the meat because I actually like it. Yeah,
that's how it is about coffee.

Speaker 4 (02:53):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
Here is our first fresh Brood coffee news hot off
the Press. Hot were called off the press. There's a
new ice coffee trend.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
Lots of you're supposed to be mixing bananas, no yeah,
into your iced coffee, and I'm sure that's good for you,
Like it actually makes your ice coffee a bit nutritional.

Speaker 5 (03:17):
I think I actually have this. You do at the
Brooklyn Schmorgesberg.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
That's where it sounds like it, because, let me tell you,
up in Connecticut and no one is doing this.

Speaker 4 (03:33):
I'm confused because banana is very I.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
Think it was frozen banana.

Speaker 4 (03:38):
But okay, even more, it's thick. I'm saying, it's like,
how do you get it to the What is this
like a smoothie?

Speaker 5 (03:43):
Yeah? It was. I did not register that at all,
like I'm having my cup of coffee.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
This was a smoothie. It was like a coffee flavored.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
That happened to have coffee in it.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
But it was like a banana, fruit forward smoothie, definitely
fruit forward.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
I don't want that. I don't want that at all.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
I hope no one's choosing that for their morning cup
of you'd have.

Speaker 4 (04:02):
I feel like you'd have to get a number of
tools to make this.

Speaker 5 (04:06):
You need a maybe a spoon.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
At the end, and you need to be expecting that.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
Like, that's not for me.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Please keep keep keep that in Brooklyn.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
Okay, that's where it belongs. I've been there. It was
always great.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
The next coffee news story, I can't believe I didn't
know this, But did you know that there are coffee
competitions you would win like drinking, drinking, I would win,
But no, it's not drinking. It's there like a barista competitions.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Yeah, and what I'm gathering.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
What I'm gathering is the barista chooses his bean okay,
and then makes what he believed she believes is the
best cup of coffee. There are judges, there are parts
of the competition. So there's the World Barista Championship. Inside
of this, there's the World Aero Press Championship.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
That must be some kind of coffee maker.

Speaker 3 (05:17):
It sounds familiar.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (05:19):
Don't look at the X Mormon, don't.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
And they have these like, uh, there's the World Latte
Art Championship.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
Oh that I believe, right, I would watch with the.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
Art in the phone. Yeah, that's w la C obviously.
And then the World Coffee Roasting Championship WCRC has I
guess a ton of follow like a ton of fans.
People go and watch these competitions and the coffee maker

(05:50):
that they choose like this, the winner of this year's
chose the Stronghold.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
S nine X was used at the twenty twenty four
w CRC.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
Oh my god, designed.

Speaker 1 (05:59):
To improved consistency and repeatability for roast profiles.

Speaker 4 (06:03):
Okay, so is this like a convention for selling coffee
products or is it really celebrating the art of coffee.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
That's a good question.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
But I believe because they're sponsors, I believe it's your selling.

Speaker 4 (06:15):
It's a mix.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
Maybe it's a mix of post Yeah, but it's a
mix of It's a mix of both.

Speaker 5 (06:18):
But like any good competition, yeah, yes, yes, Nathan, brought
to you by Yeah, written by Nathan's.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
The Thermo Plan black and white.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
For Competit was chosen as the qualified espresso machine for
the twenty twenty four twenty twenty seven w LAC, decision
that sparked much discussion within the specialty coffee community.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
Oh my gosh, can this be my life?

Speaker 1 (06:41):
I just want to have heated conversations about coffee maker.

Speaker 4 (06:45):
Get on that discord. There were the subreddit or whatever.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
Like it's gonna be a real hyped up crew, had way.

Speaker 4 (06:53):
Too much coffee.

Speaker 5 (06:54):
Yes, there's someone that I follow on Instagram who's actually
like a podcast reviewer, and I'm chary for getting her name,
but she is desperately trying or not desperately, but just
always attempting to make the.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
Latte art arts just a blob.

Speaker 5 (07:09):
And it's so funny, I have to say, like the
most like enjoyable part of her podcast.

Speaker 1 (07:14):
I've seen those like tiktoks where someone I think it's
a joke, they hold like a stencil over the foam
and then they just throw like a pound of cinnamon
on top and.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
Then they take a sex love and it looks like nothing. Yeah,
that's what I would do. That's how I would do it.
There's no way.

Speaker 4 (07:30):
A lot of times they just cover it with the
lid anyway or whatever, if you know, taking it to go,
and it's kind of sad. It's like there's there's art
under here and you're it's going to be gone at
the time.

Speaker 3 (07:37):
I really don't understand how do they do it.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
It's like someone did my face in one once.

Speaker 3 (07:43):
Did you watch them do it?

Speaker 2 (07:44):
I didn't.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
It came out with my face in It was.

Speaker 4 (07:49):
This like those things where people like see like Jesus
in pancakes or you know, you know.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
Do you think I was seeing No?

Speaker 4 (07:56):
What are you say saying it was a miracle?

Speaker 2 (07:58):
Are you saying I'm a narcissist. She sees my face.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
And no, this was like a cafe that knew me,
and they were real excited and.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
So they, you know, present this cup of coffee with
my face on it.

Speaker 3 (08:09):
It was pretty cool. That's amazing.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
No, but you almost don't want to drink it, of
course not yeah, because it's hard.

Speaker 4 (08:15):
Yeah, this cafe was like, he's never gonna go to
Duncan again. We're gonna we're gonna get her for life, right,
But it didn't work.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
This is coffee adjacent.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
There is a new cafe in Kenwood, California. Kenwood, California,
apparently is famous for hosting annual pillow fights. Oh no,
I don't know why. I don't know how to start it.

(08:57):
I should have done a deep dive. I did not recently.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
Yes, you did well.

Speaker 1 (09:01):
It ended because apparently the crowds were too intense. Okay,
so had to end the pillow fight. But the legend
remains in Kenwood, and a new coffee shop just opened
called the Pillow Fight Coffee Cafe.

Speaker 4 (09:13):
That's brilliant.

Speaker 2 (09:14):
How good is that?

Speaker 3 (09:15):
Are they allowing pillow fighting?

Speaker 2 (09:17):
I don't think so. I don't think so.

Speaker 1 (09:19):
It's just an homage to the town's rich history of
pillow fighting. Even without that history, it's such a great name,
the pillow Fight Coffee Cafe.

Speaker 4 (09:31):
Yes, it kind of evokes, you know, like cozy hillowey. Yeah,
but like killowey, like foam.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
You know.

Speaker 4 (09:36):
It's like, yes, imagine you know hoe fights.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
Yes, they should.

Speaker 1 (09:42):
I just think of pillow Fight coffee like I just
think I'm going to tuck in with a blanket, Yeah,
like an afghan and my cup of coffee and.

Speaker 5 (09:50):
Ice coffee and my freezing ice coffee for cozy season.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
But I love that. Okay.

Speaker 1 (09:59):
The last one I'll leave you with is this is
out of engineering news exciting.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (10:04):
Yeah, but your engineer at sound folks, some engineers somewhere
at some engineering company.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
This is good, right, This is the story is embedded.

Speaker 4 (10:16):
It's believable.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
So imagine if I were a journalist.

Speaker 1 (10:20):
But they they created because this is the business that
they're in, They created a coffee robot to make coffee
for all of their employees, and they believe this is
going to like.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
Revolutionize office coffee. Here's what I don't like about this.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
Besides robots, my going to get coffee at the office
is my break.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
Yes, for sure. Yeah, that actually just depresses me. It
feels like the what they do at like Facebook and
stuff where they're like, look at.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
All this food.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
You can stay all day and night, you never have
to leave.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
I have been to Facebook and it is like it's
like the town.

Speaker 1 (10:59):
It's like a well, there's parts that feel like the
friend's coffee shop, right, and.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
I'm like, you're not tricking me. This is work. I
am at work.

Speaker 3 (11:07):
It's like Vegas. There's like no like yeah, no.

Speaker 1 (11:09):
Coalk window exactly right, exactly right. But yeah, I it's
it's my break. It's my it's my coffee break. It's
also my gossip break, like going to the coffee room. Yeah,
in whichever office I'm in is like where I get gossip.
Yeah right, How am I going to do that with
a robot?

Speaker 5 (11:25):
It would be fun to sort of like put the
robot to the test, though, it would be fun to
be one robot with all the employees.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
Yes, And is it like is it like a Jetson's robot?

Speaker 3 (11:34):
That's right, Like that's what I'm in visually what I picked.

Speaker 4 (11:37):
You could argue. One could argue there are some you know,
espressal machines that you could kind of define as a robot, right, yeah,
and so.

Speaker 2 (11:45):
I couldn't actually use one.

Speaker 4 (11:47):
Yes, and so I want to know, Yeah, does this
thing have like a face? Does it like make like
chat or does it like ask your name and your order.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
And you write your name wrong?

Speaker 2 (11:55):
Yeah, the whole experience. I want the whole experience. And
then I want to wait twenty minutes for.

Speaker 5 (12:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (12:01):
No, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (12:02):
I'm I don't like robots and I definitely don't want
robots around my coffee. Get out of here, robots, get here,
you're fired.

Speaker 5 (12:09):
Ah.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
Okay, that's all the That's all the news that's fit
to sip. Oh, I love that.

Speaker 3 (12:15):
I just did that.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
I just did that.

Speaker 4 (12:17):
I just did that.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
It's all the news that's fit, that's fit to sip.
That was your coffee news for today. Thanks Lauren and
Derek for joining me.

Speaker 4 (12:26):

Speaker 2 (12:27):
