Speaker 1 (00:07):
Welcome to one fan to interview the band. A production
of our heart radio We're Old to Me. We just
released a new album and while on tour in the
U s. We decided to ask one fan to come
hand backstage and ask us questions. Here it in for
an inside look into our new album, Life on the Road.
Journey is a band and much more. Welcome to the crew.
This week we're in St. Augustine, Florida. Oh I can
(00:31):
be there again. Out I'll be on this bag out
east West Lord said our little baby brigg the goods
still out and out him. We're from All Dominion and
(00:52):
in today's episode, we we'll be talking about our life
in the road and traditions that we all have while
on tour. One of my favorite conditions that we have
on tour is drinking tequila all the time or the show.
During the show, one of my favorite storations for is
when I almost broke jest hand and knocking something out
(01:13):
of it that he wanted to keep. Hi. Everyone, my
name is Brittany and I'm the lucky winner of a
contest at w q I K held. This contest allows
me to interview Old Dominion before their concert. Here at
the Sant Augustine Amphitheater. I'm a huge fan of Old
(01:35):
Dominion because I know I connect with so many of
their songs because they're so authentic and raw, which allows
me to picture myself in each scenario that the song
plays out. I'm grateful to be here today with Matt Brad,
Trevor Wit and Jeff to figure out what life on
the road is like and traditions held amongst the band members.
Everyone say hi, hello, that was very professional. All right?
(01:57):
Who's the messiest on the tour bus? And who does
it drive crazy? See? I think you know we're all
a little bit messy. Yeah, it's all that patience level, right.
It's like my I used to fix my blanket problem.
I used to have this like blanket that hung out
of the bunk and wouldn't you would It would get
caught in the door and no one could shut the door,
and they'd have to cram my blanket back up into
(02:18):
my bunk while I was sleeping. That annoyed everyone, but
I fixed that. I got a different blanket. Now it's
just my teddy bear rolls out of the bunk. Yeah
every night I saw that today. Yeah, all right, how
often do you guys take time to have a prepared,
home cooked meal on the road rather than fast food
(02:39):
or eating out. Well, we have, like you know today,
as we see here, we have we have catering a
lot of times, and so that can be pretty decent.
It's not like we're hammering McDonald's every day, but um,
you know, but that can vary too. Some days are
better than others. Are there any rituals you do before
the show to bring good luck or good vibes? We
(03:01):
do take a shot of tequila which will bring good vibes,
but I don't know about the luck all right. Out
of all of the artists you have toured with, who
has inspired you guys the most? I guess Kenny. Um,
you know, we toured with him so much, and we
started touring with him before we even had a record deal.
So we were just this little rinky dink band at
(03:22):
that point and I didn't really know what we were doing.
So to be added to a tour that was so
big and see how it's done, you know, to run
a stadium tour really was a learning experience. So it
was really cool to watch how he toured and how
his crew worked and how he took the field for things,
how he connected with his audience and everything. It was.
(03:43):
It was great. And you guys are going back out
with Kenny. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we get we get to
this will be our fourth time. That's awesome, that would
be good. Do you guys partake in any last show pranks?
And if so, which artist was your favorite to prank?
And why? You know? We don't really do the pranks.
I think we We got pranked one time pretty epically
(04:04):
on the Chesney tour. It was our last show with
them on the first run, I think, and during the
song um, they came out and replaced all whit symbols
with tiny little symbols in the middle of the song
and it really yeah, really shopped the balls out of them.
It was pretty funny. But no, we we haven't pranked anybody.
(04:27):
You guys should try it. I mean, that was Kenny's tour,
so why don't you do it to him this time? Yeah, well,
we have we have a we actually we should. We
do have a pr in the bag that we that
we that we have yet to pull the trigger on.
But it's a good one. But we think I think
(04:47):
we're going to do it this time. I say, we
do it. I'm putting my foot down. We're doing it,
even if I have to do it myself. Trevor says,
it goes. Yeah, it's a good prank, all right. On
each of your albums, which song is your favorite to
perform live? Man? All right? On the first album, Yeah,
I'm gonna go with Nowhere Fast. Oh yeah, that's a
(05:08):
fun one. I could say that too. That's probably that's
probably my favorite to perform off the first one, but
also on that album, I'm gonna pick two. We don't
play it very often, but when we do, I really
enjoy it. Is we got it right? Definitely? Yeah? Alright?
What about the second I like, um no such thing
(05:29):
as a broken heart? How does the crowd react to that?
They react very well. Yeah, they all sing. It's kind
of an easy one to sing along, even if you
don't know it, you know what I mean? Um So yeah,
I like performing not Everything's about You off the second one,
that one is that was gonna be my pin feels
good and still writing songs. And how about this new one,
(05:54):
this third album? Oh right now, we're in the middle
of learning helped to perform them, you know, and so
right now there's a lot of anxiety involved in performing.
Did I mess around a lot? Actually, yeah, that's coming
to something. Now I feel like I'm playing. I have
(06:15):
confidence in it now, like that's happening. I saw the
video on Instagram for the some People do and it
seemed like the crowd really reacted to that way. Yeah,
they do that, and that night in particular, that was
that was in Indianapolis, and it was funny. I was.
I had my eyes closed as soon as the song started,
(06:37):
closed my eyes and held them closed for you know,
the whole first verse and maybe some of the chorus.
And then when I opened my eyes it was just
this whole arena of lights that it scared me. I
didn't I was. I had, no, Yeah, I had. It
was so bright and it was, you know, fourteen thousand
people and all of a sudden, you know, when I
(06:58):
closed my eyes, it was dark, and when I opened
my eyes it was all this light. It was. It
was pretty crazy. So now, for those that are fathers,
(07:20):
do the kids ever come out on the road with you? Guys?
Sip In school, we're trying not to skip too much school,
but um, you know, you try to find like a
good show in a good town. Last year we were
in like Tahoe for a couple of days in a row,
so it was that was a good one to pick.
So it just depends on their schedule, you know. They
have things they do to their not kids skip school
(07:42):
one day this summer or this it was like towards
the it was the beginning maybe the beginning of summer
or something. I remember what we were playing on that
baseball field and they were out. They skipped a day.
I let him skip a day. Did they like it?
Did they like coming out on the road with you guys. Yeah, yeah,
as long as it's short. You know, when at to
this second day, they're like, okay, ready to go home
(08:03):
and stuff. So what is the worst part about touring
life and what is the best? The best is the show? Yeah,
I mean we wait all day. Actually I say that.
We also a few of us golf and so we're
kind of like also on a semi retirement golf tour
become the worst part of the day though, if you're
not doing that well. But you know, we wait all
(08:25):
day to play the show. So it's like sometimes it
can get boring on here, monotonous, But the second you
walk out on stage and everyone's cheering. It's like energizings
in the worst part is, you know we mentioned like
missing birthdays and things like that. We do miss a
lot of landmark important days that we would like to
(08:46):
be there for. Understood, So is there anything that you
would change about life on the road? Would that answer
that question? Missing those days? But yeah, I mean that
would be nice to to. I mean, I think at
this point, like right now, we've we sort of come
to this point in our career where, um, we we
need to learn how to say no to some things.
(09:06):
You know, we we had we had to say yes
to everything for a long time to make sure that
this thing took off, you know, and now that it's
off the ground, we're kind of still in that mode
of saying yes to everything, and that can become, you know,
pretty taxing on your mental state and your physical exhaustion levels,
(09:28):
you know. So I think we're we're learning how to
do that. We're learning now how to say no. And
so I think once once we get into that a
little bit, good find find the boundaries, all right? How
does everyone know when to give personal space and alone
time to each other? It becomes obvious you guys are
(09:48):
very vocal about it. What is the craziest thing that
has ever happened on tour? We get to do some
pretty cool things. And this was a while ago too,
This was years ago. We play like a Polaris razor
event with Jaco and we all went out and they
had a bunch of razors and trails and they let
us jump on there and just ripped through the trails
(10:10):
and like Tommy our term manager, and I went down
one and hit a tree and broke the axe and
flip rolled it down the mountains. Jao and like I
think I was behind. So like we come walking out
and walking, I mean there's two razors that are just trashed.
We're all muddy and a head fun and they're like,
thank you guys so much. Yeah, no problems, just thanking us.
(10:33):
We just so those kind of things could be funny.
Does road life ever get lonely even though your guys
are surrounded by each other, Yeah, for sure, it's definitely. Uh,
you know this weird mix sometimes of too many people
around you and not enough you know, time with not
enough real time, you know, so sometimes you do crawling
(10:56):
that little bunk and pull the curtain and sob yourself
to sleep. Out of all the venues you have performed at,
which one is your favorite. You know, we had a
chance to play Red Rock in Denver years there was
there's more than one Red Rock there, okay, but of
(11:16):
that place is like an epic, like, you know, just
historic place to play. It's carved out of you know,
canyons and rocks, hence the name Red Rock um um.
But yeah, it's just that was majestic. So that was
really cool to play. I'd say that. Okay, anybody else
(11:38):
have a different one or one? Yeah, that one's pretty
much up there. It was cool to play the Ryman too.
You know, that's just such a historic place and you
know it's not like huge or anything, but it's such
a historic place. It's cool. Alright. So this one I
want everyone to answer besides Matt. Okay, since Matt is
afraid of the dark, is there a light that stays
(11:58):
on on the bus at night, not like like he's
got a snoopy night light? Yeah, comfort him. Teddy Bear
is real. I do have a Teddy bearon Okay. Hey,
everyone's got their own thing. I gotta blanket. It's okay, Okay.
My last one is for Tommy. Tommy, and I gotta
(12:21):
have you answer. None of the boys are allowed to answer,
can only be answered by the one and only uh
CMA nominated tour manager Tommy Garris Tour Manager of the
Year this year. That's wonderful. So now the question is
which one of you is your tour manager's favorite and
why there's no there's no such thing. Every day it's
(12:46):
a different one. Just like every day one of them
hates my guts. I think if you spend this much
time in a metal tube days a year, somebody is
gonna hate somebody's guts at some point. Really, not us.
It's just the metal too. That's it's really the metal too.
All right. Well that was all of my questions. Guys,
(13:07):
thank you for spending time with me. Today's really great.
Thank you so much, a little bit of company. Thanks
