Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to one fan to interview the band, a production
of our heart radio We're Old to Me. We just
released a new album, and while on tour in the
U s. We decided to ask one fan to come
hand backstage and ask us questions. You're in for an
inside look into our new album, life on the road,
journey as a band, and much more. Welcome to the crew.
This week, we're in Syracuse, New York. So TOUK four
(00:24):
ever gets away from you no matter how hard you granty. Sorry,
the sky filed down. Sorry, I don't know a lot.
All we do is apologized, but I don't ever I'm
sorry for all my heads in the pocket, so you
know who he called the show just to make a smile.
(00:45):
I don't ever sorry for all the shoes out of time. Hey,
it's Jeffrey Old to Me. And in today's episode, we'll
be talking about our hobbies in our lives outside of
the touring, being in being this time consuming. But when
I found myself with downtime, the first thing I do
(01:06):
is taken now. But once I get done with that,
I'll go hop on a bicycle right around town. Some
of my favorite things to do when we are at
home and not on tour are baked bread, exercise or
just catch up with old friends. Just because we couldn't
get the stars to LA don't mean we leave it
be handed. Sorry the sun came about. Sorry the second Birds,
(01:31):
it just wasn't the sweet Guess close solid form and
that s on your car ri Polden Rain, Sorry for
missing Okay, they're good. Hi. My name is Lean Stout
(01:54):
and I'm from Maunsville, New York, and I'm here with
Old Dominion for their podcast and I heard about a
contest on B one or four point seven out of Syracuse,
New York. Nice. Nice. So the first question I have
is do any of you still hang out with any
of your high school or college friends when you're home,
and if so, what do you do? Yeah, I'm still
(02:16):
like some of my best friends are still high school
and college friends. I mean they all live all over
the country, so I don't hang out with any of
them when I go home, but I talked to them
all time, and I and whenever we're playing wherever they live,
they always come out and see the show. So yeah,
for sure. Yeah, anybody else that hangs out with any
other college or high school buddies yeah, I've got a
(02:38):
high school buddy that um, I grew up with and
then went to college with, and then he sometimes actually
comes out two shows if we're in the Virginia area,
and then I think he rode with us. I remember
one time, every once a while we have old friends
coming round the bus for a night or two, and
that was so cool. Yeah. Yeah, I got some friends
that that live in Nashville now that are high school friends,
(03:00):
and I get to see him every once in a
while when we're at home. But um, also I have
some friends that um, you know or like the other
guy said, you know, spread out through the country. Whenever
we come through, they'll all come hang out. Yeah. Same here.
Like I grew up playing hockey, so some of my
friends are not necessarily from my school, but people that
I played hockey with, so I end up running into
(03:20):
them across the country here and there. So it's always fun. Nice.
That's when a chime in or not. We hung out
with some people last night. Oh yeah great. The next
question I have is do any of you still live
in the same house that you lived in before? Making
it big or should I say making it sweet? Nice
(03:43):
play on words? There, No, no, I currently half live
in it. Uh, I just uh. I bought a new house,
but I haven't moved in yet. Yes, I do not know.
How about pets? I used a pet? Yeah I have.
(04:04):
Let me think, I'm down to five fish. I used
to have seven. We're down to five? Five fish? What
kind of what kind of fish? Real they had? Okay?
I still got a beta. I also have a twelve
year old, which is why I have fish that that's
not the pet. You know. It's not that I don't
call my daughter a pet. But um, we got one beta,
we got three tetras and whatever they like sucker fish
(04:28):
looking guys. Placostumus. Oh you're close. What is it? What? Pleco?
A pleco pleco? Yeah, which I think is short for placostomus. Okay,
all right, do you keep the which is the one
with the you know, and that doesn't like any other fish?
That's the beta. You have to keep it separate, you're
supposed to. I don't. Uh. And you can't keep betas.
(04:53):
You can't put another beta with another beta, right, Yeah,
they don't like each other. Yeah, that's a no, that's
a no. No. I have two dogs, have a giant
uh dumb dog. His name is Buck. He's dumb and awesome. Uh.
And then I have an old, decrepit dog. Her name
is Penny. I got a couple of dogs. I got
(05:13):
a mini golden noodle she but I guess she's almost
two now awesome. And then we just got a new
little puppy. I think it's called a multi poo. I'll
say this man the other day at the hotel, this
guy had a mini golden doodle. It was much more
many than yours. Really, that's what a mini golden doodle. Yeah,
mind's like pushing forty pounds. There's a medium. There's is
(05:36):
a medium golden doudle. It's a golden doodle. How about
in the back any pets? Awesome? We also have a
dog at German Shot heard pointer. His name is Ranger,
not cat. No cat people, and we're not. Actually I
like cats, but nobody else does. So Okay, so we
(05:56):
already touched on this a little bit. But Matthew, I
know you do have two daughters. Does anyone else in
the band have children? Yeah? I have four kids, three daughters,
one son, Nice, I have just one twe year old.
I'm one and done one and John how old. Are
your children? Mine are fifteen, thirteen, eight and five, nice
(06:17):
and very nice? Said it. What's got two kids? Also
has two? Perfect? So are any of your family members
in any of your videos? Yeah? Uh, be with me?
We did. We made a video for be with Me
and all of our mothers are all right. They make
(06:39):
an appearance at the end. Very awesome. Yeah, let's see.
The holiday season is approaching. So what activities and traditions
do you each look forward to and enjoy? Christmas music? Yeah,
we we did it. Kind of felt like that a
little bit on the bus today. I could feel it
coming a little bit because it's cold outside. Sometimes we
put the like Yule log on YouTube on the TV
(07:01):
and we hang some Christmas decorations. We listened to Christmas
music and drink eggnog. And eggnog is a good The
trick is mostly whiskey splash knog, I remember. Sorry. So
(07:44):
have you guys ever say Christmas songs at a show?
I don't think so. I can't ever picture that. No,
he's nodding, like the only thing we did was the
Christmas We did that Christmas special Christmas? Yeah, which Bill
st Nick. We should break that out. We should play
it this year we go. It's never too early up here.
(08:05):
What does a typical Christmas Day look like for each
of you? I go to Michigan where I'm from, So
typically just a ton of gifts that I have to
envision fitting somewhere in my house to replace all the
other gifts from last year. So but yeah, it's always fun,
a lot of family good. Yeah. Yeah, it's the same
as anyone else. Is just you know, up with the
(08:27):
kids and watch them open their presence and and then
by like nine am, everything's done and you just clean
up the mess and then uh, sit back and hit
the knog. I do is cinnamon buns in the morning.
But besides that, it's you know, who knows what's going
to happen. We always fall asleep at my parents to
(08:51):
like Christmas night, and I wake up the next day.
My brother will make a breakfast. He always makes basically
it's some gravy and breakfast for us because our siblings
we all kind of scattered from Michigan, most of us,
so we end up there for one day and it
makes breakfast the next morning. Do all of you have siblings.
I have one brother, yes, one older brother. Yeah, I've
(09:11):
got one younger brother. I had a brother, buddy, best way,
sorry to hear that. Let's see, do any of you
like to cook and what is your specialty? I bought
a air fried I make an amazing steak in the
air frire. It takes about twelve minutes. Yeah, salt and pepper.
(09:34):
That's the true That's the true trick of any like
cook is if you know how long the food takes. Yeah,
flip it's halfway through, so six minutes in flip it,
apply more salt and pepper. Rub it down. Yeah, throw
the bag of veggies in the microwave, and then so
the sounds delicious. Mashed potatoes in a microwave and there
(09:55):
you go dinner at dinner time. I absolutely love to cook.
It's kind of the thing I missed when we're on
the road. Um. I like to bake a lot. And uh,
I'm trying to think of I make a mean shepherd's pie,
which is perfect, perfect for this time of year. Yeah, surprise, right, Brad,
Are you cooking at all or no? In this new kitchen?
I better cook something or else. I'm just a big loser.
(10:19):
How about what do you like to cook? Yeah? Cooks?
I cook sometimes it's fun. Let's see, so y'all have
won some music awards, not surprising to me. Where do
you keep those? I have a shelf sort of this.
There's like a staircase with a built in UM shelving
(10:39):
unit sort of underneath the staircase. So I'll put them
all in those little cubbies there. I melted mine down
and sold them they Actually I just gonna say, I
don't believe that for a minute. No, mine sit on
the mantle. Pretty cliche and know, but they're on the
mantel mine or in my office, the rolling office or
a home base. No, like the actual home office. We
should make you you till the belt where you just
(11:00):
wear them on your belt, or get somebody from the
crew to just set them up in the dressing room
every day, just set them up in your bed to
where like when you lay down, you like have your
special all great ideas. So I have one more question,
and what ways have your lives changed the most? And
(11:23):
what has remained the same? Well, um changed the most?
I would say, Uh, you know, the obvious is that
we are making some money now, which changes, like you
had said earlier, changes the house we live in and
you know, the clothes we wear, of course, the trips
we take. You know, we we have a lot of
(11:45):
opportunities now that we didn't have before, especially on those
years and years and years of grinding it out where
we couldn't even pay the bills. So it's nice to
finally get that reward. So um. And also just people
recognizing who you are. You know, that's something that changed
(12:06):
quite a bit and it took some getting used to.
I think, how about you, Trevor, how has things changed
the most? Um, Like Matthews said, yeah, just um, you know,
obviously incomes different. I think the thing that is probably
stayed the same the most is, you know, we keep
each other grounded. You know, it's not like it was
a solo artist. That's sort of you make it and
(12:27):
then get out of touch with reality. I mean, like
we've all known each other back when we were the
same idiots we are now, So that keeps you grounded.
And then you know, you get home too. It's like
we have families and when you get home, you still
got to take the trash out, fix the toilet. So
you know, in the in those ways, I think those
are the ways that things that keep us the same
people to some extent. How about Brander Jeff, I mean
(12:50):
i'd i'd say definitely know the recognition and you know,
just uh elevated a little bit of stardom. You know,
it takes a little getting used to. But uh, as
far as the same, I mean, I still love not
just even before, not just they're good. I have pretty
much the same answers all these guys, the same same things.
(13:11):
I guess that's the nature of being in a band,
as you all have somewhat similar experiences here, what I've
tried to change, nothing, trying to stay the same, unchanged.
We're just busier. We're homeless. We're not homeless, we're homeless.
So do you have a rule like you have to
(13:31):
get back home every so often? Like do you only
go a week or do you try we have a
certain goal, like in the beginning of the year, a
certain goal of how many days we're going to be
on the road. But I mean, it's really impossible to
stick to a rigid schedule because you know, sometimes, for example,
you're gonna go on the West coast, or you're gonna
go somewhere far where it doesn't make sense to come
(13:52):
back home for three days and then go back, So
there's that or an award show. We'll sort of interrupt
the week, so you're always kind of playing it by
here a little bit. But yeah, I mean, ideally would
be out a few days on the weekend and be
home three or four days during the week, but you know,
it's just not always going to work out that way.
So what would you say is the longest stretch of
time you have had to be away from home? We
did sixty I think there was a stretch where we
(14:16):
we did like sixty seven days a couple of years ago,
and we were home for one little twenty four hour
period in the middle of that. I remember that it
was two thousand. It was too long. Well, I probably
was part of that because the very first time I
saw you was with Kenny Chesney MetLife Stadium August, and
(14:42):
that is how I found out about Old Demo. So well,
I really want to thank everybody Old Dominion Sony be
one of four point seven I Heart Radio for this opportunity.
Has been amazing. Thank you so much, thank you, thank
you great up, I'm sorry down thanks for joining us
