Speaker 1 (00:00):
Um Patti Rodriguez our new podcast, Out of the Shadows,
Children of eighty six. It's about people like our parents
who left their homes to follow the promise of America
and a dream historically kept just out of reach for
black and brown immigrants. Oh. We cross the river at night, uh,

(00:23):
and the water covers meat up to my shoulders. Were scared.
Oh yeah, because I was so young. Do you remember
what year that was? Oh, the year was nineteen eighty six.
That's my mom talking about the year that changed everything.
When millions of immigrants living in the US illegally and

(00:46):
their children stepped out of the shadows. They were afraid
of Lama, they were afraid of grades. People would run
away and they would hide. But in one stroke of
a pen changed the nation, allowing millions of immigrants and

(01:07):
their children and their children's children to plan roots in
this country. That's when President Ronald Reagan signed Erica, an
immigration reform bill that would be considered radical today. Like
if that never happened, like I would not be doing
what I do. I'm grateful for the amnesty, and also
I'm aware that that didn't fix everything. I have the

(01:29):
same rights as the president of the same right, we'll
dive deep into the complicated legacy of a president who
became an unexpected savior to some three million undocumented immigrants.
My mom loved Ronald Reagan. She prays for him all
the time. I mean, I think Ronald Reagan was the devil.
We weren't supposed to come out of the shadows, but
we did and changed America for good. Listen to Out
