Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome back to the Overcomever podcast. I am your host,
Jennika Lopez. Thank you guys so much for choosing to
listen to today's episode. Today's podcast, we are going to
pause and reflect and invite God to meet us where
we are at right now. I've gotten so many messages
and dms about feeling lost in not knowing who you

(00:27):
are and where to start your life, and you just
don't know where to begin. You don't know who you are.
And today's episode is for anyone who has ever felt lost.
Maybe you're going through a season where you don't recognize yourself.
Maybe life has shifted in ways you have never expected,

(00:50):
and you're asking yourself, who am I, where do I belong?
And what is my purpose? And let me tell you
I have been there countless and countless times before where
I have felt alone, like the world didn't understand me,
my siblings didn't understand me, and I just I felt
like what am I doing here? Then? If I don't

(01:11):
know who I am or what I'm doing, then what
am I doing on this earth? If that's you today,
let's take a deep breath. You are not alone, and
more importantly, God has not lost sight of you. So
let's get comfy. Let's take this time together wherever you

(01:34):
guys are at, in your car, at home, at work,
in your kitchen, whatever you guys are doing. Let's discover
how to find ourselves together, not in the expectations of
the world, not in our past mistakes, not even in
our successes and the things that we have done, but
in the one who has created us. Let's talk about

(01:59):
the feeling of being lost. Let's acknowledge feeling lost is
part of a human experience. I would hate to say it,
but it's normal. We all go through seasons of uncertainty, transition,
or doubt. Maybe you are navigating through a major life change.

(02:21):
You're graduating, I know when we're graduating, even in high school.
If you're young and listening to this, you don't know
what the next step is. You're moving. You feel like,
what the heck am I doing? A career shift, a breakup,
becoming a parent, or in my case, my losing both
of my parents and starting life and not knowing what

(02:43):
I'm doing. You also could be feeling like you're disconnected
from your purpose, as if you're just going through the motions.
When you used to feel so confident about it. I've
also been there. You look in the mirror and you
don't recognize the person staring back at you. You've been

(03:04):
chasing the wrong things, approval, success, relationships that ultimately have
left you feeling empty. If if you connect with any
of these things today, let me remind you that God
sees you. He knows exactly where you are even when
you don't. There's a psalm that says, where can I

(03:28):
go from your spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there.
If I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if
I settle on the far side of the sea, even there,
your hand will guide me. Your right hand will hold
me fast. That's Psalms one nine at seven through ten.

(03:54):
And even in our lost, most lost moments, God is
holding us. There's nowhere we can can go that God
does not see us or hear us. Even if you
think that he's far, he might just be really close
and waiting for you just to open that door and
let him in. We also can be going based our feelings,

(04:14):
could be going based on what the world says versus
what God says. And that's difficult because we live in
a society where we see the world, we see social media,
we see these things. And it's also hard to know
what God says when you can't see him. But we
can feel him and we know the truth and what
he says. One of the biggest reasons that we feel

(04:37):
lost is because we're looking for our identity in the
wrong places. You, guys, I know, I know, I know.
It is so hard. The world says you are what
you are achieve so if I do better, this is
who I am. The world says you are your mistakes,

(04:58):
they label you, they have these on you, and that's
not what it is. The world says you have to
figure it out on your own. But God says something
completely different. We are God's masterpiece. He has created us
anew so we can do good things He planned for
us so long ago. That's Ephesians two ten. You are

(05:21):
not your job, you guys, You are not your failures,
You are not your past. You are God's masterpiece, handcrafted, intentional,
and chosen. I know it may feel like you can't
understand that or see that, but there's somebody that has
created you for purpose and shown you who you are.
Your identity is found in God, in grace, and that

(05:47):
is that is the beautiful thing that we could just
come to God and we are gifted grace and knowing
that you know what, This is not who I am.
Maybe I was always the chunky I was always the
chunky girl, the pity party girl because both of my
parents passed away. But I'm not that. I'm the girl

(06:09):
that overcame those things. I'm the person that found God
and found my purpose and other things to be able
to I've been called to bring healing, to bring to
speak God into your guys' lives and to speak on
these experiences. I'm not the grief girl. I'm not the
fat girl. I'm not the person that that doesn't amount

(06:32):
to anything. I'm not the oh people would call me, Oh,
you're just You're just Jenny Rivera's daughter. I'm not Jenny.
I'm not just Jenny Rivera's daughter. I'm also Jenica and
God loves me and I'm God's child. And that leads
to finding yourself in God. How do we shift from

(06:53):
feeling lost to knowing who we are in God. We're
gonna touch on that when we come back from the brain.
All right, you guys, welcome back. All right. So how
do we shift from feeling lost to knowing who we
are in God? Well? Number one, return to your creator.
When something is broken, you don't take it to a
random person. You take it to the one who made

(07:15):
it right. The same is true for us when we
feel lost. Our first step is to return to God.
Spend time with him. Open your Bible, pray, pray. It
doesn't have to be with fancy words, but with honesty.
Like Lord, I feel lost. I don't know where I'm
going or who I am right now, but I know

(07:38):
you created me with purpose. Show me who I am
in you, Show me who I am in your eyes.
I want to see myself the way that you see me.
Number two. Number two, let go of false identities. You
have to ask yourself, what have I been? What have

(07:58):
I been defining? Identifying myself that isn't from God? Is
it what people think of you? Is it your past mistakes?
Is it your career or your status. If it's not
rooted in God, it's not your true identity. Let it go.

(08:20):
Let that weight off of your chest, go, stop carrying it,
let it go. Number three, embrace what God says about you. Obviously,
the Bible tells us full of truths about who we
are in God. And here's just a few. You are loved,

(08:44):
you're chosen, you are known, you are redeemed, and you
have a purpose. I would encourage you guys to write
these down. Put it on a sticky note. If you
work at a desk, put it on a sticky note,
Put it at the edge of your computer, put it
in your notes, put leave it as a wallpaper. Tattoo
it to yourself and speak them over your life. You

(09:07):
have to speak positive things to yourself and knowing that
this is what God says about me, not the world,
but God. And it is in Scripture, and it isn't
the most prominent book of the world. That doesn't change.
Every time you feel lost, remind yourself of who you
are in Him. Number four Walking forward with God. Finding

(09:29):
yourself and God is not a one time thing. It's
a daily journey. You have to sacrifice yourself. You have
to submit yourself, surrender yourself to God in order to
really find and walk your way into your true identity.
Every day, starting with morning surrender, start your day by
asking God, who do you say I am renewing your mind,

(09:52):
spending time in scripture and replace those lies with God's truth.
Number three, step out in faith even if you don't
have all the answers, trust that God is leading you,
for we lead by faith, not by sight. And staying connected.
Surround yourself with people who remind you of your identity

(10:12):
in Christ. Good people, people that are going to lead
you to keep your walk, inspiring you to do better.
People that are encouraging, that aren't negative, that come with
the healthy, healthy talk versus cheese miandol talking mess or
that are just negative nancies. We don't need that. And
if you have those certain people in your life, I

(10:35):
encourage you guys today check your circle. Are they bettering
your mind? Are they leading you to your purpose? Are
they diminishing your identity? Are they going against what God says?
And I know it may suck because and I've had
to be there. We're also too grown to cut people
out of our lives and whatever. And I know that
some people, But but Jenica, what if I want to

(10:58):
bring them closer to God? You could do that in
a healthy way and also having those boundaries, so if
you have but we can get that into that in
another episode. I just want to share that. But you
have to stay connected, draw yourself closer to people that
are gonna help you stay connected to your purpose and
your identity. If you're feeling lost today, I want to

(11:18):
remind you you're not alone, You're not forgotten. God knows
exactly where you are. He will meet you there. He's
always on time. He's never early, he's never late, but
he's always on time, and he's leading you back to
yourself and ultimately, ultimately that's leading back to him. I

(11:40):
want to pray over you guys today and putting your
hearts at peace and help you find your identity. Coming
from a girl that has felt like her identity has
been in social media and her mistakes and her family name,
I just want to pray over you, guys, because I've
been there, and I have found the way, and I

(12:03):
have really really been in a place where my identity,
where I no longer let my identity be defined by
those things. Father. I come before you with an open
heart for those that feel lost, that I know that
you see them, you see me, Lord, that they may
let go of false identities and step into what you

(12:27):
have created them to be. Remind them that they are loved,
chosen and known by You. Guide our steps and lead
us back to your truth and Jesus name. Amen. If
today's episode spoke to you, I'd love for you guys
to share it with someone who might need a little

(12:48):
bit of encouragement today. And if you haven't already, make
sure you guys subscribe so that we can continue in
this journey together. And until next Tuesday, remember this, you
are found in Him, you are enough, and you are loved.
This is Jenica from the Overcomfort podcast. And go out

(13:09):
and walk in your to your identity today and I
will see you guys next Tuesday. Bye. Overcomfort podcast is

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
