Speaker 1 (00:02):
All right, everybody, it is finally that time. It's time.
It's time. It's time for a Party Time, the first
ever Party Time podcast. We're coming to you from the
Henraiko Sports and Events Center. Our friends in Heraiko County
having us out today. It's an amazing place. People are
watching this podcast from all over the country. I'm telling
(00:25):
you you need to come here to Henraiko County for
all kinds of stuff. What's Party Time Podcasts. We're gonna
tell stories for the last thirty five years, but mostly
it's about relationships, and today we're going to have a
lot to talk about with relationships. And for me, the
past thirty five years in minor league baseball has a
foundation set and I'm gonna tell you that story real quick.
(00:48):
It's about my dad, Ray Parnell. We lost m August fifth,
twenty twenty two, but when I was ten years old,
my dad took me to a minor league baseball game,
Charlotte Orioles, the Charlotte Oates. I know there's a lot
of Orioles fans out there now that didn't used to
because they sucked, but now they're coming back and everybody
loves the Orioles. But we went to a game set
(01:08):
in a third row, and I saw this person out
on the field with a microphone. And then I saw
a person dragging the field. Saw the same person boxing popcorn,
saw the same person giving people high fives and hugging people.
And I said to my dad, who's that? And my
dad said, oh, I'm not sure, son, but I think
that's the general manager. I was ten years old. What
(01:30):
does that mean? Well, you see that sign out there
that says Eddie's Tire Care Center. That's something called advertising
and sponsorship. He did that. You see when they're out
on the field, they put their head down, spin around
ten times. That's something called a promotion that makes us
smile and that makes us laugh. You see this ticket,
and yes, folks, he held up a printed ticket. I
(01:51):
think it cost like two bucks. He said they did
something called marketing so that I would want to bring
my son to this game. And I went, wow, are
you kidding me? Are you kidding me? You mean to
tell me that somebody pays him to do this? And
my dad said, I don't know how much, but yes,
he gets paid. And I said to my dad, this
(02:13):
person gets out of bed every morning and gets to
not has to, but gets to drive themselves to a
minor league stadium every single day. And my dad said, yes,
that's what I'm telling you. And I looked at my
dad that day and I said, Wow, that's got to
be the greatest job in the history of the universe.
(02:34):
And folks, I've just spent the last thirty five years
of my life having the greatest job in the history
of the universe. So we want to share with you
through this Party Time podcast, the public side of party,
the private side of party, and most supportedly, the relationships
(02:54):
that we've been fortunate to build during this Party Time season.
You're going to hear a lot of great friends. You're
going to meet the Parney Pub Club, we have some
of them here today, and then eventually you're going to
meet my family, my wife, like, we're going to really
have a good time of just spending time together and
(03:16):
reflecting on the past and today we'll look forward to
doing that with the Party Pub Club and our very
special guests for the first time ever, will the Thrill
Clark And really quickly, I know he's famous, I know
he's a legendary baseball player, but he's here today because
he's my friend, and that's about the relationships that we've built.
(03:40):
I mentioned my dad to my dad on August fifth,
when he passed away around six o'clock. I got a
phone call two hours later, around eight o'clock. And you
know who that phone call was from? Our very first guest,
Will Clark. Because he's that kind of a person. I
wanted to make sure that he knew that he was
there for myself and my family. So we're gonna talk
(04:02):
to the thrill we got tc here Will Clark's son,
one of my favorite people on the planet. And then
when we come back, after I stopped sweating like a
two dollars hooker in the front road church, we're going
to introduce for the very first time ever, Parney's Pub Club.
Come on to you right now from the Henroyko County
Sports and Event Center. Parney Time is here for you,
(04:26):
all right, everybody. I'm still trying to figure out this
Party Time podcast any number one, trying to figure out
where I can put my feet and be comfortable. I
can't figure out where to put my feet, just like
you know in that movie he could figure out what
to do with his hands. But we got four of
my favorite people here to be the first ever Parney's
Pub Club. We're going to start down to the far end.
(04:50):
We have my boy, Vick Dennis bick Meyer from the
Henryko County Sports and Event Center, but even before that
Richmond Raceway and since the moment he moved to he
was my guy. I'm want to tell you this is embarrassing,
but he's my little buddy and I'm the skipper, which
means I'm the fat one. Okay. So Dennis mcmurr, welcome
(05:12):
to the Pub Club. Michael Phillips MP on the mic,
legendary sports journalist and great friend to Party's Pub and
Party's family. So MP, welcome to the show. Cheats that's
what everybody calls him, Cheats, and he is a legend
not only in Richmond, but the Black Baseball Mix tape
(05:35):
and the Cheats movement. Cheats and I've worked on a
lot of things together through the Flying Squirrels for years. Cheats,
Welcome to the podcast. And then's last, but certainly not least,
he's a legend all over the country. And today's birthday.
So what Tanya and I got married. Joe t was
(06:02):
our sixty one year old ring bear for the wedding
and he came into the music of what was it
The Godfather? So welcome to the show. Happy birthday, Joe
t you. So we're gonna have talk to you all
more later, but we got one quick question before we
bring up today's featured first ever guest. So we're always
going to talk to the pub club every show, and
(06:25):
it's going to be a lot of back and forth,
and this is basically one shot. We're gonna You're gonna
have one shot right here to just hit me with something. Okay,
But I asked the questions because it's my damn show.
So the question is who is your favorite baseball player
growing up of all time?
Speaker 2 (06:44):
Beck This one's easy man begins with a w.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
It has will in it, but it's Willy stargar Oh
kicking on the hill with will. By the way, this
is the trash can my mother, Judy Partner, made when
I moved to college. She took all my baseball cards
and made a bunch of trash cans out of them.
And Willie Stargell was right.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
Here, pops Man, right here on the playground. On the playground,
we used to try to emulate that warm up he had.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
I always pretended in the backyard. There's another show. But
my dad went to work one day and I went
and got my grandpa's Rodo tiller, And when my dad
came home, I was watering home plate in the pitchers
mount of our entire backyard. And my ass was sore
for like a week because he wore me out. But
that's a whole other story. But he loved me. That's
what true love is. Everybody, all right, Willie Stargell MP
(07:36):
on the mic.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
Growing up, Nolan Ryan, I worked for the Nationals for
a couple of years. I loved Ryan Zimbralman. Great dude,
great in the community, great in the clubhouse. I got
a big soft spot for Ryan Zimbra And he hit
the walk off first game ever at NAT's Part.
Speaker 1 (07:49):
Great moment there. I'm gonna go, Ryan Zibram Ryan Zimmerman
born and raised in Sandbridge Beach, Virginia. Nice home of
the seventh inning stretch.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
Come see, I'm also going to go too, because growing up,
the first book.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
Has ever been out with me in a bar before.
If you want to have twos, do you shoe?
Speaker 2 (08:18):
Growing up?
Speaker 4 (08:19):
The first baseball book I ever read was about Willie
Mays and so I never saw him play outside of highlights,
but Willie Mays could do it all. I know what
he meant to our family, my father, my grandfather, and
one of the reasons why I love those fifty four
Giants and I wear these hats like this is because
of Willie Mays and what he did. And then as
(08:41):
somebody that I'm able to see as a child, I
remember watching Kim Griffy Jr. Take batting practice with a
backwards hat and candid yards and hit the ball. I mean,
he didn't hit the warehouse that day, but he might
as well have because watching Kim Griffy Junior play throughout
my life was it's just been awesome.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
Ball had a different sound coming off that bat.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
Sweetest wing outside of one other person that's coming on now, Joe.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
T is going to be a repeat, a fender of
the show.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
I'm gonna say that.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
Normally, we're not going to let him talk. Okay, he's
going to say two words. It's either going to.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
Be hell yes or hell no.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
But Sins answered this question, Joe T.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
I'll answer, I'm gonna cheat. I'm gonna go to Jesus.
He actually the president.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
I'm sure the show's already going off.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
I got to still growing up.
Speaker 5 (09:41):
So my first one growing up Ron Lotus, because we
went to Bacon Academy, Colchester, Connecticut classmates and as I'm
still growing up, I used to watch this guy, watch
this guy in college play Before our games in Jackson,
Mississippi in nineteen eighty five, Ron Polk would bring his
crew down and of course playing in that on that team,
(10:05):
Will Clark lay He.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
Mentioned Mississippi State, and that's what about that?
Speaker 2 (10:16):
That's what I was still growing up and still going
all right.
Speaker 1 (10:19):
So we got Willie Stargell, We got Ryan Zimmerman, which
was nice to get. That was a setup. You let
me talk about Sandrids Beach, Willie Mays and griffyr Ron
Wontas and Willie Stargell. Excuse me, Will Clark. Speaking of
Will Clark, we got to Thrill here, the very first ever. Guess.
You can only have a first one time everybody, and
(10:42):
our first for this podcast is the great will to
Throw Clark. And we'll be back with Thrill and a
special guest later on in that episode right after this. Hell, yes,
of course I'm going to bring up the night you
kick the entire singles Cardinals. Ass. I think that's pretty awesome.
(11:02):
Do you guys ever see that tidbit? Yeah? He slides
in the second just starts pounding jose Kind in the face.
And then I get traded to the Cardinals. He's my
third base. Coach tell us out and had beers and
just laugh and giggle.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
Cut it up. So so I'm helping. I'm helping. I
told you and Joe to this story. But I'm helping.
You know, Trey's little high school team and you know,
when he was younger, and uh, you know, some of
the kids come up and they're like, coach, you know
a lot about baseball, you know. I was like, well,
thank you, you know, and they.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
Go, how you know so much?
Speaker 2 (11:38):
I go, all right, look, I said, you like, you
guys like to get on the computer and Google. I said,
Google will the thrill? I said, see what pops up?
Speaker 1 (11:45):
Right?
Speaker 2 (11:46):
And I didn't know it?
Speaker 1 (11:47):
Right?
Speaker 2 (11:47):
So does the fight pops up first?
Speaker 1 (11:49):
Right?
Speaker 2 (11:50):
So?
Speaker 1 (11:51):
Yeah, So the.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
Next day, the next day, the next day, all the
kids come into clubhouse and they're like, coach, They're like,
you like to fight?
Speaker 1 (12:00):
No, I was a major leaguer. Oh okay, all right,
so we're back with the very first ever guest, and
we actually have two because they're both very special. In
the opening monologue, I told a very special story about
someone who's a very close friend of mine and my
wife Tanya and our kids, and he's here to my right,
(12:20):
Will Clark. Welcome to the very first ever podcast. Love it,
love it. And in my house, we don't ask when's
the Thrill coming? We asked when's TC coming? Clod what
one of my very favorite pictures I said to both
of you guys last year in the dugout. I think
(12:41):
it was round the fourth July, maybe not, but it
was a fireworks show and the three of us with
Joe Panic, we're sitting in the dugout probably talking about
how we couldn't hit that night. So but thank you
both for being here along with the pub Club. It's
been a great time filling this so far. We're gonna
talk a little bit later on about your podcasts and
what you're doing, because that shit is on fire. But
(13:05):
I Toltdal a really poignant story, a meaningful story for
me about you, and and yes, you're famous, you're the Thrill,
You're a household name in America. But when my dad
passed away. You were one of the first people that
call me. So let's talk a little bit about relationships
and what this game has given both of us lifelong friendships,
(13:25):
lifelong relationship with our kids, with our spouses. What people
see all the stuff on TV and they see they
see us and particularly you doing great things. But but
talk a little bit about those relationships and the people
that are your everyday friends.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
So I've always been, you know, a people person, and
I've been one of those guys who like to meet
people like I'm kind of outgoing, very very similar to yourself,
and I'm actually an introvert. Yeah, exactly, so pop Club.
So when you and I met each other for the
(14:02):
first time, however many dozens of years ago, it was
just it was a friendship that would never go away.
And you know, when you meet somebody like yourself and
you are brought into their inner circle and you get
a chance to meet, you know, your wife and family
and all that sort of stuff, it becomes part of
(14:22):
your family. And so for me personally, you know, knowing
you all of these years and getting a chance to
meet these guys over here has been special. It's been
a big part of why I love coming back to
Richmond every year and working with the Giants and seeing
these kids in our farm system.
Speaker 1 (14:41):
Well, so we have a party's pub at the Diamonds
and my friend Will has been known to get behind
the bar after the games. Do you remember the night
that I don't remember who the sponsor was, but we
had a night pub club where Will was behind the
bar and I asked the sponsor who their favorite player was.
You remember the story, And he's at Will Clark and
(15:01):
then you started messing with him and telling him that
Will Clark was a jerk and all this kind of stuff.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
I can't believe. I can't believe you follow a guy
like that. He's like, no, he's my favorite dude.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
So that real pours him, know, to drink, and he
goes to leave, and he looks at me and goes,
so I called him and he goes, give that dude
the phone and he goes, hey, buddy, this is Will Clark,
your favorite player.
Speaker 2 (15:28):
Like, oh my god.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
He's like, yeah, you dumb ass. I'll just I just
gave you a beer before I left.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
We have some. We've had so much fun, and you know,
having the pub club here is is pretty special because
like gi he even even you know, met him for
the first time, second time, whatever it might be. You know,
he grew up, you know with Willie Mays, and Willie
Mays was you know, one of the special assistants when
I'm playing, and I learned so much of the game
from Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, you know, And to hear you,
(15:59):
you know, go on about that, I'm like, oh my god,
that's special. And then you talk about you know, like
Ken Griffy Jr. And looked we got a little shared
on and so yeah, I mean it's it's it's amazing
in the baseball world how everything's so small.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
So I think that's a really good point to make
of this first ever Party Time podcast. It's kind of
like everything just clicks together right when you meet the
right people. And of course we had Joe t like
running the clubhouse all those years. Talk a little bit
about what it's been like for you and Trey to
travel together and go to places together and the times,
(16:38):
you know, we've had some great times postgame, right try
we had some great times of parties, but we've but
we've also had some great We had a great dinner
last year with me and you two and Tanya, y'all
took us out for a great dinner. I've never seen
a person house a steak and a lobster like young
Tray Clark did, like like like I looked up and
(17:00):
that whole steak in the whole loves.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
You had sparks coming off. It was awesome. But you know,
I mean to go back to what you were saying.
You know, baseball and chieve and recommended this, you know,
and everybody else who is here. Uh, you know it's
baseball is a family game. And you know, you grow
up with mom and dad, you grew up with Grandpa
and grandma, and you know stuff like that. And Trey,
(17:25):
you know, being my son, uh, he grew up around
the game. And I love bringing him to the ballparks
and get him in the clubhouse and doing stuff. And
Joe T was kind enough all those years ago to
let Trey come in and be the bat boy and
stuff like that. And it meant the world tell you,
(17:45):
thank you, Jo business, Yes indeed, And you know you see,
you know, the best in the business. You see Parny Parnell,
and you see a Joe t and how they've overed
their way through you know, the game, but yet at
the same time probably moving on a.
Speaker 1 (18:04):
Little bit more maneuvered some say elluded the authorities some
other set. That's what we got to talk. We're going
to have a show during this podcast season called clubhouse Story.
Speaker 2 (18:24):
Those are something you don't want to get out.
Speaker 1 (18:26):
You can get whacked like that. No clubhouse stories A right,
we won't do that. So pop club get ready. I
got y'all, got you all ready for some questions for
for Will, but will looking back at what you've seen,
looking at the Giants organization, Uh, just real brief we
talk about like what the Giants are trying to accomplish,
(18:49):
your giant through and through. You love the Giants, your
your numbers on the wall out there. What's the state
of the Giants right now?
Speaker 2 (18:56):
State of the Giants right now is you know, we've
had a lot of success us in the past. Uh
you know, twenty ten, twenty twelve, twenty fourteen, Yeah, we
had we had some rings like that, Yeah, Bud, yeah, Bud.
And uh, you know, we went through a little transition phase.
We lost some of our guys and now we're trying
to get back, you know, back up to that winning
(19:17):
tier and not only on a major league level, but
also filtering down through the minor league level. So that's
kind of why I am here, is to you know,
not only teach you know, some of these young kids.
You know, hey, look this is how you hit, we're
scoring position, this is how you look for certain pitches
in certain counts. But then not only that, is also
evaluate for everybody in San Francisco. Say, you know, Mike's
(19:42):
Mike's ready for the next level.
Speaker 1 (19:43):
Or Mike is definitely not ready exactly, but which you
understand where I'm going curve?
Speaker 2 (19:54):
Yeah, so you know, I mean, I think I think
they like the fact that, you know, you get a
veteran who's in the love us with the kids for
a week straight and can evaluate really well.
Speaker 1 (20:04):
One of the things I've always loved about you as
a friend and also as a baseball person is You're
going to get the truth from Will Clark every single time.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (20:11):
Do you think that? Like, not everybody can handle the truth? Yes?
How do you deal with that?
Speaker 2 (20:17):
Now?
Speaker 1 (20:17):
When you have a twenty two year old that has
been coddled their entire life and Will Clark's go tell
them they suck? Yeah, how do you handle it?
Speaker 2 (20:24):
You know what I mean, you got a there's certain
there's certain guys and as you as you guys well
know being you know, parents and everything else, there's there's
certain people you gotta you know, treat with kid gloves
and certain people you can kick any ass, and uh,
you know. But at the end of the day, especially
in baseball, it is such a business that you know,
some of those guys that have been coddled their whole lives,
(20:46):
like you talk about, they need a dose of reality.
And so I'm the guy that comes in and does that.
And I tell everybody. I tell the coaching staff this.
Joe t knows, Jot knows because I tell a coaching staff,
I tell the trainers, I tell the strength guys. I'm like, you,
let me be the bad guy. You guys have to
be with him for a full year. I don't. I
can hit and run, so I'll be the bad guy.
Speaker 1 (21:08):
Well, I never view you as the bad guy. I
view you as a guy that I love hanging out with.
I was just thinking about this even with our front
office staff, and it's so special in Richmond. Everybody, and
I think the pub club will agree with this. The
locker room is right across from the office, you have
a guy like Will Clark or our manager Dennis Pelfrey or whoever.
The players will come in there hang out. I remember
(21:29):
one specific time we had an employee who still worked
with us. I won't say his name anymore, but do
you remember the Saturday that I brought a bunch of
shrimp in and me and you cooked shrimp on my
grill right outside yep and the office. That employee told
me that that was one of the greatest days of
his life because he called home and told his dad,
I got to just eat shrimp with Will Clark if.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
He showed up a half hour earlier, were out there
peeling him me. But yeah, no, I mean, it's so
much the.
Speaker 1 (21:59):
Stuff of those I don't think. I think we ate.
We ate, literally ate the ship.
Speaker 2 (22:02):
Hey hey, look that I'm a coon ass, you know,
so I ate the south end of a northbound coon.
So alright, all right.
Speaker 1 (22:11):
All right, so you guys ready, yeah, all right, So
the pub club's going to hit you with a one one,
a bunch of We're just gonna rapid fire, So you
just gotta be on the ines.
Speaker 2 (22:21):
We go first, Yeah, where's your favorite spot to go
on the road? What city did you enjoy o My goodness,
I believe it or not. I wasn't a big, huge
AstroTurf fan, but I did like Cincinnati, and I liked
San Diego.
Speaker 1 (22:37):
Cities, or to play both.
Speaker 2 (22:39):
As cities, and to play in San Diego, you know,
being Southern cal and weather it was gorgeous to play
in all the time, and stuff like that. The infield
grass was cut like this because Tony Gwynn wanted every
hit possible, So you knew you were gonna get five
in there.
Speaker 1 (22:56):
I knew what we're going to talk about Tony Gwynn.
Speaker 2 (22:58):
At some point. And yeah, Cincinnati, believe or not. Like
I said, I'm not a big, huge, not a big
huge turf guy, but I really enjoyed, uh Cincinnati. It's
it's kind of rule. And at the same time, when
that turf got hot, that ball shot out of there.
Did you ever call the shots with the grounds crew? No?
I did not, No, I did not nice. I took
(23:21):
it easys. That's a problem.
Speaker 4 (23:29):
Yeah, well you just mentioned Tony gwyn Who were some
of the other hitters when you.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
Were a pro? Who did you look at? Who did
you check the box score to see? You know, you're
You're exactly correct. You know, being the first basement, all
of the best in the game come down there. You
know you got you Tony Gwynn Keith and and that's Wade,
Bobs Ken, Griffy Junior, Edgar Martinez. You need these names,
all Hall of famers and just unbelievable. And this is
what I tell a lot of times to like, you know,
some of our kids. It's like, hey, you know when
(23:57):
the best in the game are coming down there, and
now all tell them me the same thing? And I go, oh, hell,
I might you want to put that in my game?
If I'm telling you the same thing, maybe you might
want to put that in. And so by being the
first basement and by being a big fan of the
game and understanding the intricacies, I'm able to pass along
(24:17):
a lot of that knowledge to our players.
Speaker 1 (24:20):
Now I know this is the pub clubs, so I'll
keep going back. I just I want to bring up
something because this is a conversation and not an interview, Wyatt,
But who is the best talker down at first face.
Speaker 2 (24:32):
Without a shout, without a shout, two people, Gary Carter,
he wouldn't shut up, He would not shut up. And
then the best ever made me laugh all times because
he talked in the third person. Was Ricky would come down,
there would be like three Ricky here, and I'm like,
(24:54):
I know, you know, so I got this on. I
got this one for you guys, right, So Ricky Ricky.
This is in spring training where we're playing the A's
a bunch, right, and Ricky's down there and Larusa puts
the wold sign on because he wanted Maguire and Canseco
to get some swings in and you can just see
Ricky wants to steal a back. Riggy is getting pissed
(25:14):
and I'm egging him on.
Speaker 6 (25:16):
I'm just.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
You, you like Rickyriggy, you don't need to take that run.
And he about two or three pitches, lady goes, oh,
hell thrill, he goes Ricky gold and so so I'm
looking to that all right, and I go like this,
I go he's running right. So sure enough we pitch out,
throw down the second base, Ricky slides in safe and
(25:42):
he goes, I told you, Ricky, go, Ricky go. That
is by far my best moment. Oh got He's so funny.
Speaker 1 (25:56):
I need to add Ricky. Two people don't want to
have a cock.
Speaker 2 (26:00):
Who knows where that conversation and he would always call
you thrill. Yeah, caught me thrill. And then you know,
like I said, talk to the third person the.
Speaker 1 (26:08):
Whole don't don't hurt MP.
Speaker 2 (26:11):
Speaking the T shirt, this is the show where tries.
Speaker 1 (26:17):
To make out with MP on the show. All right,
over at second base here? Yeah, well, speaking of second base,
what the heck happened in that Cardinals game?
Speaker 2 (26:25):
Oh my goodness, Yeah, I like I like you. That
brought the notes went off script. So that actually came
about from the night before. Vince Coleman was on first
base and the Cardinals walk by a lot and it's
like the eighth in it, and so we played behind you, right,
(26:46):
and he stole second and third and at that third
and third, and at that time, you know, the stolen
bases counted, and he was chasing Ricky's record, is what
he was doing. Ricky didn't like being chased by anyway.
So now we're yelling at at Coleman, Hey, we're gonna
drill you. We're gonna drill you. And next day we
didn't drill you. Right. So now, the the games, we
(27:11):
didn't have a a picture that had the tenacity. I
just yes, that was the easy part. So now the
roles are reversed. Now we're up like a five or
six nothing, and I'm on first base and Dusty Baker
is my first base coach. Dusty was my hitting instructor
(27:32):
for five years before he became Right, huh you real tight?
I still talk all the time. So I turned around
to Dusty. I turned around Dusty, I said, I'm going
to get somebody goes you got it? So it just
so happened. Kennye Malinao was our hitter and he got
jammed and Ozzie went to flip it to a Kendo
and I. I had got a pretty good jump at
(27:52):
first base, and the rule was back then, if you
could touch second base with any part of your body,
you're okay. Well I could as I was going by
it and made contact. Yeah, I slid completely through the
dirt portion. And so I'm getting up and Kendo's in
(28:13):
front of me, Ozzie Smith's behind me, and Kendo hits
me in the helmet. Wam I catch him and then
I grabbed him around the head and I hit him again.
And then by that time I go to the ground
and it's just a full on melee and all that. Right, Well,
you know, at the end of everything, we go back,
we look at the videotapes. Dusty Baker's the first guy
in the because he got a freaking run and start.
Speaker 1 (28:38):
Yeah, I gave him my heads up.
Speaker 2 (28:39):
But you know, you know, all these years later you're like, hey,
there's a Hall of Famer in the bottom of the bottle.
Speaker 1 (28:44):
I wonder if Dusty took his toothpick out, but he
got his roostbands on it. So there's your Saint Louis
story right there. And as a as a footnote to that,
a Kendo and I I get traded to Saint Louis
later in my career.
Speaker 2 (29:00):
Ken Do is actually my third base coach, and we
went out and we had beers and laughing, giggled and yeah,
exactly exactly. That's what we're talking about, how small it is.
And you just say that it's boys being boys, you know,
That's what I'm saying. That's it always happens, like you
never know down the road who you want to see.
Uh jo t you're your birthday, You're not?
Speaker 1 (29:18):
Just real quick? One more question each you three? You
do you have a mic swor?
Speaker 3 (29:23):
I got remarked up for what's the number one thing
you advice you give to the Katherine, So the kids
when I'm when I'm here, when is pay attention to
the game.
Speaker 2 (29:33):
Because the reason I'm saying is if the scout report
on you is, hey throws a real.
Speaker 1 (29:40):
Good I gave you the scout of report. He can't
hit water if you fount off a boat.
Speaker 2 (29:44):
But so a perfect example is if if you know
you have good fastball command and your breaking ball is
not that good, but yet that day it's vice versa.
You know, and as well happens in the game a lot.
You know, you can't get fastball over so you got
to start throwing your brig ball. Well you need to
pay attention to that and gesture game. And so that's
why I tell the kids now, I said, look, you
(30:05):
guys get flooded with so much information. You know, it's
not the information that you need, it's what's going on
in the game that day. So pay attention to the
game that day.
Speaker 4 (30:16):
Kate, when you think back on it, we'll put a
bigger smile on your face. Playing in the World Series
or representing Team USA.
Speaker 6 (30:23):
Oh that's a really good one. Just being here, just
like hanging out, taking a nap or some awesome.
Speaker 2 (30:34):
Without a shadow of doubt, it's being on the Olympic
team represent the USA. You know, because we went on
that Who is the manager of Rod Dato, He was
the head coach of USC and his first basement was
Mark Maguire. So I actually, believe it or not, I
played like left field and d HD. I only played
first base a few times.
Speaker 7 (30:54):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (30:55):
Yeah, so so.
Speaker 2 (30:56):
But we went on this barnstorming tour and it was
thirty six games and thirty two days and thirty five
different cities or something like that.
Speaker 1 (31:04):
It was something crazy. How many beers were.
Speaker 2 (31:08):
I mean, we played in small ballparks, we played in
high school parks, we played in midgle league stadiums, and
you know, then we got to the Olympics and it
was in Dodger Stadium and when you we came out
for the opening ceremonies right and we were right behind
basketball and that was the dream team with Jordan and
(31:29):
all of them. And you want to talk about the
LA Coliseum going absolutely insane. It was nuts. And then
you know when you got there on the field playing
in Dodger Stadium, and you know, you get forty fifty
thousand going USA. They could care less about you know
who you were. It was about you know, representing the country.
Speaker 1 (31:47):
So definitely. So did you get one of those Olympics
like sweatsuits.
Speaker 2 (31:51):
Get everything?
Speaker 1 (31:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (31:53):
The only problem is I don't think Tom you could finish.
That was shall we say a few obs ago barnstorming beers.
Speaker 1 (32:03):
It happens.
Speaker 2 (32:04):
Yeah, shirt here panted the T shirt all right. Picture
that you love to face, picture you hated to face.
Oh my god, So I get this question a lot
about picture that I hated to face. It was never
a person because We've had this talk to T and
I've had this talk to when you're in the middle
of the lineup, you're gonna face everybody. You're gonna face everbody.
(32:26):
Number one, number two, you're gonna face the Randy Johnson
and the Pedros and the Nolan Ryans. You're gonna face everybody.
So it was for me it was a type of
picture a guy with a good change up. So change
up the toughest pitch to hit in baseball. So anytime
you face a John Tutor or Jamie Moyer or Glavin
or a Maddox, you know you had your work cutout
(32:46):
for you and you had to execute up there. Picture.
I love to face He's probably not gonna want me
to say this, but Kevin Millwood, Kevin, Yeah, I.
Speaker 1 (32:58):
Was hoping he was gonna say, Clin he's got to
be on.
Speaker 2 (33:04):
He's got to be on the podcast.
Speaker 1 (33:07):
He's now a really good college baseball Yeah, I'm shocked
to even let him on to college.
Speaker 2 (33:14):
Yeah. No, he's he's pretty awesome. But Kevin Millwo, Kevin Wilwood,
it was just one of those things. He you know,
unbelievable pitch you with the braids, he chunked it, and
you know, yeah, and we we say this all the time.
You know, some guys make a mistake and you never
miss it, and then other guys make ten mistakes and
you follow him all off. And he was just that
guy for me.
Speaker 1 (33:35):
And you mentioned the change ups the hardest pitch to hit. Yes,
but now all the time in the minor leagues, all
we hear about is vl o v lo v lo vlo.
So it's interesting to me for our viewers to hear
one of the greatest hitters of all times say that
the change up.
Speaker 2 (33:50):
Is what gets yeah, because because if you get used
to you know, somebody throwing fastballs, or you get used
to somebody throwing sliders. You know, it's pretty easy to see.
And you know we all grew up hitting a straight
ball and be that big. So I mean, you could
stand from me to you and throw it as hard
as you want. I'm still going to catch up to
it sooner or later. But when you make it to
(34:12):
the major leagues, it's the guys with the deception and
they get you out of your time and get you
out of your rhythm. Those are the guys that are
that are the next step above.
Speaker 4 (34:21):
So do you think those guys like the maddox Is
in the Glovens and the guys that didn't throw very
hard would still be equally successful.
Speaker 2 (34:29):
To be by far without it? I tell you what
matter of fact, believe it or not? Because of the
v LO thing, all right. So if you see a
fastball out there and it's ninety seven, when it gets here,
it's gonna be the same spot, all right. I don't
have to do any calculations when you facing a Mattox
or Glavin. They're throwing sinkers and change up. When you
see it out there, when it gets here, it's probably
over there, you know, so you got to do all
(34:50):
of that, Marianno, exactly, you got to do that stuff
on the fly. Oh he was amazing. Oh my god,
it's right there, it's right there. No ten only cat
where that one come from? Oh my goodness, speaking of
Tony Gwinn, believe it or not. Speaking of Tony Tony Gwinn,
(35:10):
I asked him how he did against Mariano because I
was having some problems against Mariano. And he said, I'm
doing pretty good.
Speaker 1 (35:16):
How cool is that?
Speaker 2 (35:16):
And just two guys, I said, can you do me
a favorite? Because I was swinging. I swung a thirty
five inch bat. I said, can you send me one
or two of your bets? He goes, yeah, sure, he says,
I'll send you a big one, in the in the
small one like okay. So he sent me one thirty three,
one thirty two. So I used a thirty two, ed you're.
Speaker 1 (35:32):
On, Marianna, and I was able to get a few
hits because he wasn't out of.
Speaker 2 (35:38):
It's great.
Speaker 1 (35:39):
All right, let's talk about Thank you Pup Club. We're
almost out of time. There's two things I want to
talk about before we say goodbye to our first ever guess,
as I mentioned before, Trey's next to you. Something very
special for all of us that love Trey Clark happens
in the spring. Will do you want to tell the
story about what the video that you sent me and
we'll try to get ahold of the video.
Speaker 2 (35:58):
You want me to tell a story? Want to tell it?
Speaker 1 (36:00):
I think I'll tell it all right, let's hear it.
Speaker 2 (36:03):
Well.
Speaker 8 (36:04):
Well, in the first game of our league this this year,
it was two months ago. First game, I hit a single,
first hitting the wood bat.
Speaker 2 (36:15):
League right, and the first ever base hit with a
wood back which Clark yet.
Speaker 8 (36:21):
And in the second game, I hit my first ever
home run.
Speaker 2 (36:34):
Three run bomb to center field. And as a footnote,
as a footnote, Trey actually led his little team in
RBIs this year.
Speaker 1 (36:46):
Boy, So you you sent me the video what you
did as a testament our friendship and Tanya Saw, I said,
everybody and I must have watched that video. I'm not
lying to your TC at least fifty times even more.
And for a guy who just hit your home you
must have been watching your dad or something, because his
home run trot was one of the best home run trots.
(37:10):
And then he gets to the dugout, and he does.
He does a high five, high five. He gives himself
a little five. So what was it a fastball that
you hit?
Speaker 8 (37:20):
Yes, yes, it was, and it was and it was.
It was a fastball, and I was when I hit
I knew I hit it good, but I didn't. I
didn't think it was going to go out, though normally
I would. I'm always about to play folks on putting
the ball and played, not just hitting home runs.
Speaker 1 (37:41):
It was a laser.
Speaker 2 (37:45):
Hit it out of center field, and there was a
canal back there, and the ball went to the canal,
so I couldn't get the damn ball, And so I
ended up getting a ball for tray a week or
so later and wrote all kinds of nice stuff on it. Yeah,
but as a parent, you know, and as you well know,
I mean as a parent, that was so much better
than anything I've ever done, you know. I mean, I
(38:07):
just I had a smile on my face, and his
smile didn't go away for like two weeks.
Speaker 1 (38:12):
Bro, I could hear your smile through the video. That
It's amazing. So that's one of the main reasons we
wanted to have Trey here, besides the fact that we
love Trey and Tanya's wanna watch this video a million times?
You try, Joe T. I'm not supposed to talk. Can
we hear Joe T? All right or not?
Speaker 5 (38:34):
In Arizona Spring trainings, me and Will and equipment and
just having a thought, and I said to what Will?
Speaker 2 (38:40):
Did you ever think of manage it? You should, man,
I'd love to see you.
Speaker 5 (38:43):
Man.
Speaker 1 (38:44):
You said to me to go Jo T.
Speaker 2 (38:45):
I'd love to, but I'm more focused on my family.
That's exactly what you told me, Because I got my
son I gotta be with and that's my focus.
Speaker 1 (38:54):
That's what we're talking about. And and that's another reason
I wanted to have these guys here, because you know,
right now, prayers and thoughts out to my pastor Day
and my brother in law he's going through it, my
sister Nancy, this is I have a lot of family focused.
So that's another reason I wanted to have these guys on.
But can you imagine being a major league umpire. If
wool Clark's in the dugout as the manager, screaming at
(39:17):
you like every.
Speaker 2 (39:18):
Bit to be, they'd probably give me the heave hole
a few times. It'd be like when the fans were talking, Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Speaker 1 (39:30):
He got somebody used to write, and I think it
was Lou Panella would write a check to the American
League Office for like fifty thousand dollars, and then he
would put he would put payment in advance in the memo.
And then and then Andre Dawson told me a story
at the Hot Stove one year where he paid an
(39:50):
ejection fine and put in the memo, UH monetary donation
for the blinds the Empire.
Speaker 2 (40:00):
I got one story for you. I got one story. Yeah,
you got to hear this one. So we're in Pittsburgh, right,
and behind the wall of the dugout is a water cooler,
and everybody in the major leagues for the last hundred
years has beat on this water, right, and it just
so happened. I got strike one, strike through, strike three,
and I go kick the freaking water cooler, right, and
(40:20):
the water cooler comes off the wall, water shooting everywhere
in the dug euye. You know. We gotta go turn
the water off. And we come back into Pittsburgh the
next time in there, right, and there's a bill for
four hundred dollars sitting in my locker. I'm like, what
is this and then the clubhous guy goes, yeah, it's
for the water cool I said, there's a thousand water cooler,
(40:42):
you know, And so I paid the I paid the
Clubhous to get a hundred bucks. I said, here, I
need you to do this. I said, here's one hundred
for you, and here's four hundred. I said, go across
the street to the bank and I said, get four
hundred dollars in pennies. And I said bring bring a
dolly with you. So he went over there. Sure enough,
he gets these big bags of pennies and he freaking
totes it on the back. I said, now bring it
(41:03):
upstairs and give him the bill and tell them that's
from Will of Thrill. Don't ever send me a bill again.
So the Pittsburgh Pirates had four hundred dollars worth of
pennies that we need a thousand pounds.
Speaker 1 (41:14):
And knowing the Pittsburgh Pirates, they still have every.
Speaker 2 (41:21):
Throw.
Speaker 1 (41:21):
As we're closing up, talk about the fun podcasts that
you're doing with Burns.
Speaker 2 (41:26):
So you know this is this is the your opening
podcast here, and I know it's going to be a
hysterical because I see your gang here first off, and
I do know that I've met a lot of your
people that are going to be coming on the show.
But Eric Burns and I do a podcast on Tuesday nights,
and I'm not able to do it tonight because it's
gonna be at the game with the with the flying squirrels.
(41:48):
But it's called No Filter Network. It's on Tuesdays, shows
called Deuces Wild, and we're pretty much half in the
bag because we drink the whole time, we cursed the
whole time, and we talked about everybody. So if you
guys want to come on and check that one out
on Tuesday nights, you guys should laugh your asses off
(42:09):
because we cover everything A to Z in the baseball
world or what I mean. One time we sitting there
and I don't know why we sitting there talking about baseball. Right,
He's got the American Kennel Club on the screen, Lile.
I like, what's going on there? He goes, oh, I
like to watch dog balls.
Speaker 1 (42:27):
God. So he was he was helping the Savannah Bananas
a couple of years ago. They came to Montgomery. I
didn't get a chance to talk to him because I
was out doing other things. And then by the time
he got to the bar with us, I was already
honkered down with Jake Peevey.
Speaker 2 (42:44):
Yeah, yeah, I got you, Jake Pevey. That's a that's
a that's a long.
Speaker 1 (42:48):
Night, Jake Peevey. That's all I want to say, Jake Pevee.
So was running around wearing a leopard skin fur coat
and Montgomery, Alabama, where it's like one hundred and seven
degrees in the shape.
Speaker 2 (43:02):
So this year in March, the Bananas game to Baton
Rouge and he spent three games there. In Trey and
I we went the dugout the whole time. We had
a ball, didn't Yeah we did? You went. Trey went
and hit with the guys on the field and all
that stuff. So that's funny to get.
Speaker 1 (43:17):
Yeah, a lot of fun Well, guys, I think we're
just about out of time.
Speaker 5 (43:20):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (43:21):
I'm not getting any signals from my man over there. Okay,
here we go. I'm good. But will Trey On behalf
of the Parnell family The Party Time Podcast. We love
both of you, We love your whole family. Thanks for
being here, Parties pub Club. We will review the film.
See who did a great job? Who's getting cast off
the Island. Joe T was Will and Trey Clark good
(43:43):
first guest for Party Time Podcast.
Speaker 2 (43:48):
I'll tell you what, don't get no better than Joe T.
Don't get no better wait.
Speaker 1 (43:51):
At our wedding when when Joe T walked down the
aisle to the Godfather theme song, I thought nobody was
going to pay attention to anything else that happened the
entire day. So well, guys, thank you so much. It
was a great time. Thanks to Octagon, thanks to Wyatt,
your whole crew, Thanks to everyone here helping us film.
The Henryko County Sports and Events Center the place to
(44:14):
be all around the country. I've been told not to
tease the next guests, so I want, but what time
is it? It's
