Wearing I used to use it a lot more than
I do now.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
And wearing is Kansas Jayhawks jacket. You can't see that
when you're listening to the podcast. But of course MP
a huge cam is this dude born and raised in Wichita, Kansas.
And today we're switching over. I have a very good
friend who once told me that all musicians want to

(03:11):
be athletes, and all athletes want to be musicians. And
it's just funny that the person that said that is
today's guest from the twenty twenty five Entertainer of the Year,
the twenty twenty five Texas Music Charter Wars. Yes, I
did my research for this one and the very popular
band Reckless. Kelly Cody Brown from Austin, Texas Coaster. Welcome

(03:33):
to Party Time, man.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
Good morning everybody.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
We're so excited to have you on Party Time. We
have a few surprises for you doing this show. But
first of all, you're a proud Flying Squirrels fan. You
got your Flying Squirrels head on, you got your artuist
ardeas Bodor shirt on. What else you got?

Speaker 4 (03:53):
I got my Flying Squirrels coffee mug, which I really
should fix up here.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
I've got my little office here.

Speaker 4 (04:01):
I was in Ireland a couple of years ago and
a friend of mine gave me this awesome little.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
Right here. It's really great. You just put the ball
on there and you just like this our first day
of the Irish coffee. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (04:19):
Tell you what, boys, I'm living the life.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
You are. You are living the life and that We're
going to talk all about that today. And as I've
said before on party Time, we this is a conversation
amongst friends. This is a show about relationships, and this
is a very special relationship to me, and not only me,
my my entire family will get into that. But Cody,
let's start with how you and I met, because it's

(04:45):
one of the all time great stories. So I'll start
and then code Cody, you can fill it in. About
twenty and eleven or so, lou Debella, our dear owner,
Loudabella and I had a meeting at the Mayor's office
and then we left the Mayor's office. Let's just say
it was one of those meetings that didn't go like

(05:06):
we wanted about the new ballpark. This being built right
behind me as we speak here at the Diamond CarMax Park.
And we walked into this Irish pub, Shane's Irish Pub,
down the street from where I used to live before
I met Tanya and LOUI was screaming and yelling. And
if those of you in Party Time Land that know
Lou de Bella, he was guest number five and season one,

(05:28):
you heard that that led probably all time record MP
of f bombs in one Party Time show Lose Prolific.
So Lou was being prolific and I said, Lou, there's
a guy sitting at the bar. We don't know who
he is, like, and Lo's like, I'll go where and
lose myself to it. And he walked down to this
guy at the bar and it happened to be Cody

(05:49):
Brawn and Cody, you guys were in town to play
the Hat Factory. If if my memory serves me, I
don't know if do you remember the names of the
venues that you play in?

Speaker 4 (05:58):
Yeah, most of the time, but yeah, that would and
that one actually changed changed names shortly after that, so
I'm glad you still remember that.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
Yeah, I might be wrong. So anyway, I heard I
heard Cody tell tell Lou that he's from Austin, Texas.
So then I sauntered down there and said, do you
remember what I said, Cody?

Speaker 4 (06:18):
He said, uh, you're from Austin, Texas. You know JJ
Gotch I believe something along those.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
That's exactly what I said.

Speaker 4 (06:27):
And Willie was sitting there with me too, my brother Willie,
the lead singer of the band, And uh, yeah, so
we we do we At the time, we're doing a
celebrity softball game at round Rock Stadium, which JJ was
ahead of there in round Rock.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
So you and JJ obviously.

Speaker 4 (06:43):
Good friends, and we were had been really good friends
with JJ for a long time, and just it was
best friends at first sight from then on the rest
of it.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
So do you remember we called you? I said, you
called JJ, and I'll call JJ. I won't see who
answers the phone. So we we both called JJ Gotch
at the same time, and JJ answered your call, not mine.
And if I remember this correctly, JJ said to you

(07:12):
when he answered the phone, if you're with Parney in Richmond, Virginia.
Run as fast as you can.

Speaker 3 (07:21):
Is that how Yes, that's exactly how it went. And
then from then there.

Speaker 4 (07:27):
We sat and it was early in the afternoon, by
the way, like four o'clock.

Speaker 3 (07:33):
Yeah, four o'clock, gentlemen. Yeah, and uh we had to
play a gig that night.

Speaker 4 (07:38):
Willie and I sat there and we had several drinks
with you guys, and then I believe you had somebody
from the office send down some custom h Squirrels jerseys
that we were on stage that night.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
Yep, you guys have been on stage with Squirrels jerseys
quite a bit in your career.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
It seems like, oh yeah for years now.

Speaker 1 (07:56):
And yeah, you're you're I'm always really excited that you're
Your favorite hat is the one you have on right now,
the flying Squirrels.

Speaker 3 (08:09):
You'd be amazed.

Speaker 4 (08:10):
Like, we travel all over the country, all over the world,
but I've been in the strangest places and have people
come up and ask me if I'm from Richmond, and
it takes me a second like what, No, I'm not
from Richmond, And then I realize I'm wearing the hat
and there this this merch is everywhere and people, what's.

Speaker 1 (08:26):
The strangest place anyone's ever said? Why are you wearing
a squirrels hat?

Speaker 4 (08:32):
I was on top of a mountain and veil, the
ski mountain in Vail, Colorado, and I was just up
there in the summertime with some friends taking pictures and
hanging out, and this guy came up and was like,
you from Richmond, fine squirrels And I was just like,
that's awesome.

Speaker 1 (08:47):
Man.

Speaker 3 (08:48):
That was probably one of the one of the weird.

Speaker 1 (08:49):
Oh look at that. And there is ladies. I'm in
our Surprise Guests and Parties pub club for today, the
CEO of the Austin Gambers. We just told the story.
We just told the story about how we met JJ
gotch JJ. Welcome to the show, buddy, and congratulations on
all the successful the Austin gamblers.

Speaker 5 (09:09):
It's good to see you. But just know that you're
with me every day. You sit right right by me
at Regank.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
For those of you in party time land that cannot
see the screen, JJ's got his own party bibblehead, and
so does Cody MP does not have a party bibblehead
near him. I bet give me a minute. I think
I do. And JJ Michael Phillips MP is a part
of the Party Time Pub Club. He's here with us
today too. And you have not seen producer White, So JJ,

(09:36):
can you confirm that when we met and JJ and
Cody and I called you, can you confirm what I
just said in the story that you answered Cody's call
and you told him if you're in Richmond, Virginia, party
run as fast as you can.

Speaker 6 (09:49):
As fast as humanly possible. Putting you two together would
be like putting a tornado and a hurricane together. While exciting,
mass destruction usually follows, but now it just you guys
are two of my favorites. Obviously, for over twenty years,

(10:09):
Cody and I've been get to hang out a lot lately.
We not only Reckless Kelly, but the thirteen other iterations
of the different bands and projects he's created. We brought
on and you missed a good one last weekend party.
We had about nine thousand of our friends partying with us,
watching bull riding every night last week.

Speaker 1 (10:27):
Yeah. No, I kept on. I was supposed to be there.
I had a plane ticket. And then one of our partner's,
the main Energy, called this is a story I wanted
to tell you guys that I wanted to wait till
party time. So called and said that they wanted me
to play in this charity golf tournament with them, and
they just signed a big deal with us for Carmack's Park.
So duty called Fellows Sorry, and we're on the first tea.

(10:49):
Two of the guys were complete strangers, and we hit
our te ball and he had music on his cart.
We get to the t ball and he's playing music
really loud. I'm like, is that having Knights in Ireland
by Reckless Kelly? And he's like, yeah, do you like
Reckless Kelly? I said, I'm actually supposed to be with
Reckless Kelly today. He goes, well, I'm actually I liked

(11:11):
them a lot, but I'm a I'm a huge Cross
Canadian RAGWEK fan. I go, oh, I'm showered with Cody Canada.
And that's the first, the first thing the dude ever
heard me say was I showered with Cody Canada. And
that leads into you tube working together on the softball game.
Cody just mentioned it. Jj I was the manager of

(11:35):
the one Hit Wonders when Cody finally won. JJ. Either
one of you guys you want to talk about the
Reckless Kelly Charity Classic that JJ you did when you
were with Noan Ryan and the Ryan the Brown Rock Express. Yeah.

Speaker 6 (11:49):
I mean it started as most great ideas usually start.
Cody and I think We're up in the Budweiser suite
at Dell Diamond A, partaking in a few cocktails, and
we started talking about an idea. You know, Cody and
Willie and their love for playing ball with their buddies,
and we were talking about getting them to come out
to the stadium one day and just just playing ball.

Speaker 5 (12:08):
And then it said, well, we should, We're going to
do it.

Speaker 6 (12:10):
We should get all of our buddies out here, and
maybe we should maybe we should raise some money for
charity and actually do some good out of it. And
so just kind of just kept We've kept spitballing all night,
and by the end of the night we came up
with the concept for the Reckless Kelly Celebrity Softball GM,
which was basically, you know, one of the you know,
big celebrity softball game, bringing together all the great Texas
country music artists, athletes, professional and ut athletes. I think

(12:34):
we had a Cody what a good tenure run at
Dell diamond, ranged a bunch of money for youth related charities,
baseball and softball related charities, and it was just a
really fun, a wholesome event that usually ended up at
on the Arkae bus somewhere downtown, but now just one
of those great collaborations of bringing together great people in

(12:56):
and around the sport of baseball and softball and music
and just a great collaboration.

Speaker 3 (13:01):
Oh same.

Speaker 4 (13:02):
It was amazing, you know, getting to play baseball on
a field of that caliber, and you know, it's like
dream come true stuff for guys like us that you know,
grew up just playing little league ball and having fun
with it. And then you know, all of our buddies,
like you were saying earlier party, you know, all musicians
want to be athletes, and athletes want to be musicians.
But this was a really fun way to combine those

(13:24):
two things. And all of the bands that participated. We
had over one hundred bands over the years that participated,
and a lot of them came back every year and
they all still talk about it, and you know, we
get out I get asked at least once a month,
if not twice or three times a month, and when
we're bringing it back and honestly, we are too fat
and old to do it then, so I don't know

(13:45):
how the hell will do it now, But we might
be up for a reunion to get the kids out
there and do it well.

Speaker 1 (13:51):
Maybe maybe we can get some of JJ's bulls from
the Austin gamers that come up to Carmack's Park in
the next couple of years when we opened Carmack's Park
across the street. But for me, it was a full
circle moment. I think it was twenty twelve when Tanya
and I came down there. I think Tanya and I
JJ had just started dating, if my memory serves been correct.
We stayed at JJ's house, and one of the players

(14:12):
on your brother's team, Willie, had a stacked team, right
like WILLI wanted to win every year, and I guess
he had until Party came to manage Cody's team. And
Ricky Williams played for his team. And Ricky Williams was
actually an outfielder for me when he played minor league baseball,
and he struck the pose for one of the most
famous cards. His card for the Piedmont bow Evils that

(14:38):
year was in the Heisman pos and Ricky hated it
and actually wanted to buy all the cards, so I
hadn't seen Ricky sis. Then I got a selfie with
Ricky on the field after that game, and of course
he went to Don's Depot, one of my favorite spots
that the three of us just went with my sister.
We'll get to that a little bit later, but that's
like the collaboration of this relationship, and that's hell thirteen

(15:00):
years ago. So that's one of the special memories that
I have of being involved in that. And also JJ
wasn't involved in this, but Cody. There's been several times
when you guys are reckless. Kelly has been on tour
and you called and said, Hey, we're going to be
and so and so, I see the scrolls are home,

(15:21):
and you would park your bus in the parking lot.
And I remember one day game, y'all came in here.
It was a Wednesday day game or something like that,
and you came to the part of ten am. You
walked off the bus with a yetti drink full of
Cody Brown juice at ten am and sang the national anthem.

(15:45):
But that led into a couple of times where we
had an oyster roast one time that you guys hung
out at and then tell our listeners about the relationships
that you built with some of our players. And we've
had an entire team parties at Reckless Kelly shows before. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (16:01):
My favorite, I think was when you rented the bus
and like a party bus, you know, with the lights
and all the fun stuff, and you brought the whole
team to our show out at this drag racing strip
outside of Richmond.

Speaker 1 (16:12):
And Dominion Dominion Raceway.

Speaker 4 (16:16):
Yeah, yeah, exactly, Yeah, And so it's this big place,
and I mean, we're just having so much fun on
the bus as the promoter had to run and be like, hey,
are you guys been to play tonight? Or we're finally
got up there on stage. We're playing and Barney comes
walking up on stage with this whole tray of you know,
whiskey shots, and security almost tackled him because he didn't

(16:36):
have a pass or didn't didn't look like he belonged.

Speaker 3 (16:39):
But we were like, no, no, no.

Speaker 1 (16:40):
He's with us.

Speaker 3 (16:41):
He's cool, it's cool, it's cool.

Speaker 1 (16:43):
JJ. I was in Richmond. I thought I thought the
rule of Parney could do whatever he wants in Richmond
applied to Dominion Speedway, but apparently it's not our buddy
Eddie Mack called called the security guard Barney Fife and
tore him to get away from me. But those are
specially to this day. I bump into some players, or

(17:03):
right now I'm talking to a bunch of players as
we're finishing up the diamond and asking them to send
videos in. They always ask me how they guys from
Reckless Kelly are doing, because you know, all of us
JJ's now in professional bull riding, Cody obviously as a musician,
and myself in baseball. Like, we're not really in the
entertainment business. We're in the memory making business. And every

(17:25):
single day all of us make memories for thousands of people,
one of which Cody. You guys just got done with
this year's Bron Brothers reunion. Talk a little bit about JJ.
Have you ever been to? The bron Brothers.

Speaker 6 (17:36):
Reunion always comes at a crazy time of year, and
for us there's always some kind of accomplished. So I
ended up making making up for it by spending thirty
hours here in Austin with the bron Brothers.

Speaker 1 (17:50):
Was Don's depot in the mix.

Speaker 6 (17:53):
Usually and usually one of our cars is left there
the next morning too.

Speaker 1 (18:00):
Brown's brother You and you and Cody go.

Speaker 3 (18:03):
Well at the festival.

Speaker 4 (18:04):
My parents started forty years ago up in Challis, Idaho,
and it's a three day festival that we do in
this little tiny town in Idaho. We bring everything in.
It's like a town of five hundred people and we
have about three thousand people a day for three days.
Some people come for four or five days. But we
bring all of our friends from Texas and all across
the country, bands that we've come to know and love,

(18:28):
and turning all the people up there onto some good music.
And it's families and you know, it's now it's two
or three generations where the people have been coming for
years and my parents once ran it, my brothers and
I now run it, and it's just amazing. It's such
an odd combination of just people from all over, all
walks of life and all kinds of different you know,

(18:50):
kinds of folks, and all there for the same reason,
just to enjoy music and the camaraderie of being in
the mountains and joining each other's company.

Speaker 1 (18:58):
To our party time list there is I am a
backstage guy and a tour bus guy. I love being
backstage I love being on the tour bus. JJ is
laughing right now, sound like a buckle bunny. I don't
know what that means. But uh, there's been some shows,
Cody where I don't think I've left the tour bus
and you guys have come back on. I've been still

(19:19):
drinking Tito's and watching and watching sports on on the
television on the tour bus. But is there the memory
that I have of being at the bron Brothers Union.
I forget what year it was, it was like five
or six years ago. But after the show, we all
went back to the hotel, a fancy hotel and challis

(19:40):
Idaho that we all stayed at Cody Hilton. And it
was not the fucking Hilton, I can tell you that
right now. But but it was awesome and all the
musicians were sitting out in the parking lot, Chris Cross
Apple Sauce playing music. It just passed sit a guitar

(20:00):
around and that's Is that a little bit of a
tradition at Bron Brothers reunion. Oh yeah, yeah.

Speaker 4 (20:05):
It's always kind of the funnest part for me is
the after the after hanging, you know, all the jam sessions,
and I always have you know, inevitably, I'll look at
my watch and it'll be, you know, five in the morning.
I'm just like, I gotta go. I gotta be back
at the stage at eight o'clock tomorrow morning. So got
to drag myself out of the jam every year. But
it's it's great. It's usually just kind of the musicians

(20:26):
and whoever is strong enough to last that long.

Speaker 1 (20:29):
I remember Jango Walkers like you. I remember Jango Walker
sitting there, Uh yeah, playing his dad's music. That was
That was something that that I remember. Is there a
favorite band that you guys have had, you and Willie
and your brothers have had. If I if I could
pinpoint one band in the history of the bron Brothers
reunion that you've had as your guest there that stands

(20:52):
out to you, man, there's.

Speaker 4 (20:54):
So many, honestly, you know, we we try and always
get like a hero of ours to come and play,
you know, on an older artists that we've looked up
to for years. And we've had, you know, Rodney Crowell
and Steve Earle and Guy Clark and you know, some
real heroes of our scene. And uh we got to
back up joe E Lee up there one time and
got to back up Steve Earl.

Speaker 3 (21:14):
Those were probably my two favorite older artists.

Speaker 4 (21:17):
And then you know Cody Canada you mentioned from Cross
Canadian Ragweed has been coming for twenty years. He comes
every year with his family and he just basically told
us you can put me on the bill or not,
but I'm gonna be there, so figure it out.

Speaker 3 (21:30):
Oh is that Joe T Ha.

Speaker 2 (21:33):
Before gentlemen get to Joe's the star.

Speaker 1 (21:38):
Joining the show from his seven jobs of entrepreneurialship, Joe T.
We have not only Cody Brown, but JJ gotch And
what does that give you? Hey? Yeah, that gives you
a hell? Yeah yeah, rushed off a chicken palm souck MP.
I don't have you. I don't have your picture, but
we're going to have you. Ask a question after I

(21:59):
after I take it to JJ and UH and Cody.
One more time. Leroy Parnell, my long lost cousin, was
at the Brown Brothers reunion and he was calling me
because the whole time that we were there and uh,
and that was great to meet him even though we're
not related. So Tanya I got married New Year's Eve,
Joe T just arrived. Joe T was the Ring Bear.

(22:20):
You guys remember the music that Joe t took the
ring up to JJ.

Speaker 5 (22:23):
You want to tell everybody, I can't remember the actual song.

Speaker 1 (22:28):
Cody.

Speaker 6 (22:29):
I had a few pregame cocktails with Cody.

Speaker 1 (22:34):
It was it was the Godfather theme song. How brought
the Brought the Rings up? H MP, you were there too, uh.

Speaker 2 (22:44):
I also was having drinks as well. I will I
will plead drinks as well.

Speaker 1 (22:50):
Picture is not up on the screen. MP.

Speaker 2 (22:52):
I'm gonna work on that. I'm very much here, but
I I am. If you can't see me, I'm gonna
work on that.

Speaker 1 (22:57):
Okay. So, so obviously Tany and I had had a
wonderful wedding of people that we love and obviously I
love JJ, we love Cody and and uh Joe t
MP A lot of people there. But but these guys
traveled all the way from Texas and I know, I
knew the wedding didn't start till six point thirty five.
I knew they were gonna be banged up.

Speaker 4 (23:17):
But it was on New Year's Eve, by the way,
just one of the easiest days to travel in the world.

Speaker 1 (23:26):
Well, thank you for coming. But my story related to
this is weeks later, Uh, Tanya and I took the
video over to the wedding venue and we were by
the way JJ Cody's having an Irish coffee.

Speaker 5 (23:41):
Damn it, Cody, Yeah.

Speaker 1 (23:45):
And we're sitting there with Dawn from the from the
venue where we got married, and Cody comes on the
screen saying Hey Parney Tanya, we love you, and down
goes wait wait wait, wait, stop stop the video hit
the ball Paul's button right now and I'm like, whoa,
what's so I'm wrong. She's like, did Cody fucking bron
Was he in my venue? And I'm like yeah, She's

(24:09):
like Cody Brown from Reckless Kelly. I'm like, yeah, he's
one of my best friends. She's like, he was in
my venue and I didn't even know it. I'm like,
you saw the guest list and she's like, I'm going
to see them play in Montana in three weeks. So
the wedding venue person was a huge fan of Reckless Kelly.

Speaker 4 (24:30):
Well, funny story I was playing. We were playing in
Nashville one time and I walked into this little Irish
public we go to a lot and at the time,
it was cold, it was like.

Speaker 3 (24:39):
November or something. I'm wearing a beanie cap.

Speaker 4 (24:41):
You know this is not it, but you get the
idea and big beard and I'm a little chubby on
the chubby side and walk into the bartender.

Speaker 7 (24:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (24:55):
And she goes, oh my.

Speaker 4 (24:56):
God, Zach Zach No, not yeah, Zach, Zach Brown, Zach Brown.

Speaker 1 (25:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (25:03):
I get confused for him, and she goes, oh my god,
Zach Brown's in my bar. I can't believe Zach Brown's
in my bar. And I said yes, And Zach Brown
would like to start a tab.

Speaker 1 (25:17):
Hey, real quick. I was in Orlando for the Winter
Meetings one time. JJ. Remember we had the Winter Meetings
down at the Swan and Dolphin all the time. And
remember that jelly roll place, that the piano bar we
would go to and you and I would tear that
place up. And I don't know if you were with
me this night. You probably were. We were always together.
But I was wearing a red flying Squirrels jacket. And

(25:40):
they were having a college football awards ceremony at Universal.
And by the way, this is before he got really fat.
This girl comes up to me and says, coach Bilma,
can we get a picture with you? We're huge Wisconsin fans,
and I was like, sure, next thing, you know, I
got a line of like ten people that think I'm
Brett Bilma. And again this was before he became a

(26:03):
little larger than than uh you know, I mean I'm
still large too. I'm in the chubby club as well.
Hell yeah. So anyway, Uh, let's let's let's switch it up. MP.
You got a question for Cody and Or and Or Jjson.

Speaker 2 (26:20):
We've got two stars all love it.

Speaker 1 (26:21):
What's up? Cody?

Speaker 2 (26:22):
You you do it with your brother and you know,
siblings doing rock bands has been a thing for a
long time. Obviously, sometimes it goes really well, sometimes it doesn't.
How do you guys, How do you guys keep it going?

Speaker 1 (26:33):
Well?

Speaker 3 (26:36):
Man, I really don't know.

Speaker 4 (26:37):
We've we've had our moments, but we've just kind of
never never pushed it over that limit. You know, we've
we've we've shared a bedroom since we were little kids.

Speaker 1 (26:46):
You know, we grew up poor in.

Speaker 4 (26:47):
A little mining frame house in Idaho and had four siblings.
Well there was four of us all together, but uh
we we spent the road on the road, time on
the road together when we were kids.

Speaker 3 (26:58):
You know.

Speaker 4 (26:58):
He had a family band for ane years and then
went straight into this. We've just kind of always been
the odd couple, and you know, we've had our moments
where we you know, fight about shit, and usually the
band will just leave the bus when him and I
get into it because they're just streaking at each other,
like we fail each other, and everybody gets uncomfortable, and
then you know, everybody leaves and WILLI and the're like
so see it lunch yip, fine, cool all right by Yeah. Yeah,

(27:23):
we we've always managed to just kind of never cross
certain lines, and you know, we're we're kind of winding down.
This year is our last year of heavy touring, and
you know, some of that's due to just the fact
that we all still get along, we all still enjoy
playing music together, and we kind of want to wind
it down a little bit before.

Speaker 3 (27:44):
That's not the case, you know what I mean.

Speaker 2 (27:46):
So you know, it's not like, huh, what's that like
known it's the farewell round that's got to be better.

Speaker 1 (27:53):
Sweet.

Speaker 3 (27:55):
Yeah, you know, it's it's not an end.

Speaker 4 (27:57):
We're not breaking up, but definitely just you know, we've
been on the road since the band started in ninety six,
doing one hundred and fifty to even more shows sometimes
a year and we're just ready to kind of be
home a little bit more and you know, make the
shows that we do do count and just looking for
a little break. I think after the pandemic we realized

(28:18):
there was a lot of stuff that we'd missed out
at home and just again just kind of a culmination
of kind of worn out from being on the road
and getting a little irritated with each other here and there,
and it was just like, let's just pull the reins
back while we're all still enjoying this and kind of
revamped the whole thing and approach it a little differently

(28:39):
as we move forward. So that's kind of where I'm
just I'm really lucky to you know, my brother and
I still get along really well. All of my brothers
and I. We do the family Festival in Idaho together
and we spend a lot of time together and work together.
And it's challenging for sure, But like I said, I'm
really blessed that my brothers are all we all have
thick skin, short memory.

Speaker 1 (29:00):
I say that I mean, and I think JJ would
agree with this because he knows everybody as well. Like
it's really fun to watch, like I know, when I
was at the Brown Brothers reunion. You allowed me to
go backstage, and I went into the very back when
you got you were all up there with your brothers
and your dad, and you were singing, and I was
brought to tears. I never told you this story. I

(29:22):
forget what song y'all were singing, but your dad had
his arm around you as you two were leaning into
the microphone together, and it was just a look out
between your two heads singing, and I see like five
six seven. However many thousands of people there was, and
I just thought that was like one of the neatest
things I've ever seen. Real quickly and tell this story.
You're probably tired of telling this story, but you were

(29:44):
on the Johnny Carson Show with your with your entire
family talk about that.

Speaker 3 (29:49):
Yeah, you know, we did it.

Speaker 4 (29:52):
We actually got to do it twice when we were
kids in the late eighties and our family had a
family band. So it was my four brothers and my
dad and we got to be on there. The talent
agent called us, and it was when Jay Leno was
just kind of hosting for Johnny before he before Johnny
turned it over to Jay Leno, and so we went

(30:13):
on with Jay and it was we was a big deal,
but we grew up without TV, so we literally didn't
even know what a big deal it was, you know.

Speaker 1 (30:20):
And so could you keep your eyes off his chin
because he's got like the biggest chin in the world,
a huge chin.

Speaker 4 (30:25):
He was super nice and anyway, it was a great experience.
But after we got done with that, like we obviously
knew how big it was because everybody's talking about it.
And then like a month later, Johnny called, or the
talent scount called again and wanted us back on with Johnny.

Speaker 3 (30:38):
So went back and did it again. And yeah, I
mean it was it was surreal.

Speaker 1 (30:43):
It was. We were so young.

Speaker 4 (30:44):
I was I think I was twelve years old, so
my brothers were all younger than me, and so we
didn't really know at the time what a big thing
it was, you know, And but it was really positive
and really fun experience, and those guys were just awesome.

Speaker 1 (31:00):
We're talking about family JJ, Cody and I uh JJ
remember the time at the winter meetings when we had
the big steak dinner at that steakhouse with my kids.
Cody wasn't there, but uncle uncle j j JJ and
Cody are both called uncle by my kids, and Uncle JJ,

(31:20):
after we were eating steak and drinking alcohol for a while,
did what Uncle JJ.

Speaker 6 (31:27):
What any great uncle would do is is really follow
the meal with a really nice digestie meaning being furnette,
and offered that the table as a symbol of my
love and affection for you and the rest of your
family and for everybody to partake. But unfortunately for one
of the girls, her her palette and her stomach and

(31:47):
the furnette just didn't get along that man.

Speaker 1 (31:49):
Yeah, we'll leave it to the audience to get Oh,
there's there's Cody's cat. We'll leave it. We'll leave it
to the audience. I guess which which kid it was.
But she leaned over to me and said, hey, Dad,
where's the bathroom? I apologize in advance for puking up
this eighty two dollars steak. And then she came back
to the table and said, puke and rally, boys, puke
and rally. So but we also, Jay, Cody, y'all are

(32:13):
playing at the Winter Meetings in Vegas one time, and
that was very special because JJ, you and I put
together a large group of baseball people. JJ was still
working in baseball for the Ryan family knowing Ryan family
name drop and we had a bunch of people there,
JJ Reid Ryan, who else was there? There was a

(32:35):
lot of people.

Speaker 6 (32:36):
Poster you know, Milla Bitch was probably there, Probably Kyle Bostwick,
you know, the usual, the usual assassins.

Speaker 1 (32:44):
Yea, our buddy that unfortunately passed away, that that was
with the Tigers.

Speaker 5 (32:54):
Come on, you knew him from college our team?

Speaker 1 (32:57):
Yeah, yes, yes, yes, so yeah, it was awesome. It
was a great night. Uh. Lou de Bell was there,
all of our owners. Uh. But then but then the
next day, Cody what do we do with the kids?

Speaker 4 (33:13):
Took him down to old school Vegas down on the
old strip what do they call it now? The old
downtown Obinions and all that, and we went down and
played the more affordable black jack tables.

Speaker 1 (33:25):
We can have the zip line and my and my
con area was with us. Joe T Yeah, Joe T.
Was you have a good time? Joe? Did you win
at the gaming table? But then some other moments after
Tanya and I got married again talking about family because
it's imported to all of us. Uh, After Tanya and

(33:46):
I got married, Lindsey and uh, now goes by Fritz,
Fritz and Hobbes. Fritz and Hobbes went on a four
month trip around the country and stayed in Austin with
you two.

Speaker 4 (33:58):
Right, Yeah, they came and stayed with Katie and I
and uh, we had a great time. We went cowboy
hat shopping. I got him, got him some cowboy hats
down on South Congress and then we went to one
of the one of my first U PBR Gambler bull
riding events at the HB Center and had way too
much fun in the suite. That was a mistake to

(34:19):
get us just in a suite with free booze. That
won't happen again.

Speaker 8 (34:23):
Yeah, and the kid the kids called me and said, Dad, uncle,
JJ's an alien.

Speaker 1 (34:31):
We're convinced of it. I'm like, what are you talking about. Well,
he's in the suite and he was drinking something which
was what JJ tequila. And then I turned around and
he's on the big screen getting interviewed on TV like
he just vaporized onto the thing. But then JJ, tell
everybody you guys won that night, I think, and then
tell everybody in party time what you said to me

(34:54):
when you call Because of Cody, Fritz and Hobbs.

Speaker 3 (35:02):
Oh the photograph.

Speaker 1 (35:03):
They were taking pics that you took pictures with the
championship trophy, but you couldn't use them because they were
flashing gang signs.

Speaker 4 (35:13):
Not so much gang signs, but you know, we were
probably kind of yeah, we were a little out of control.

Speaker 1 (35:22):
You were having fun. And then and then finally then
we'll get back on the music and and uh and
and and JJ, I do want to ask you, since
you were so kind to join us, a couple of
quick questions about, uh, the Austin Gamblers and your success,
the crazy success you're have in there. But my sister
Nancy and I'm really appreciated this. Uh. Pastor Dan, who
married Tanya and I and Joe t gave the ring

(35:44):
to passed away over almost two years ago. But on
the one year anniversary of his passing, Nancy's like, I
want to go away from home. I don't want to
be at home. Will you meet me in Austin? And
I said, I'll meet you in Austin. But are you
one to Austin just to chill? And she said yeah.
I said, well I'm bringing chaos because JJ and Cody

(36:05):
are going to be there.

Speaker 4 (36:06):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (36:07):
And I want to thank you all on the Parting
Time podcast, Both of you. JJ had a nice lunch,
had us over to his house and cooked this crazy
tomahawk steak. Jo t oh, yeah, uh and uh. And
then Cody took my sister Nancy, the wife of a
Baptist minister, day drinking in Austin, Texas. Well. It was

(36:30):
the name of the first place we.

Speaker 3 (36:31):
Went to, code the Texas Chili Parlor Bar.

Speaker 1 (36:35):
The Texas Chili Parlor Bar. It's like one o'clock in
the afternoon. The place is packed, JJ, it's packed. And
I turned up. We were Cody and I ordered our
normal drink Tito's and soda or whatever. And then I said,
nance what do you want? She goes, I'm not sure.
And I said, when's the last time you day drank.
She goes, I've never day drink in my life. And

(36:56):
that was and the JJ made her eat an oyster.
She'd never eat an oyster in a live So it
was a great trip. And Cody, this is the official
I'm telling you right now, Nancy and I are going
to come see y'all in DC. So this is the official,
the official thing. MP. Do you have another question?

Speaker 2 (37:14):
Yeah, I want to hear from Cody What what's your
favorite band to go see live? Who puts on a
great show that you respect?

Speaker 5 (37:22):
Man.

Speaker 4 (37:24):
Recently, I've seen The Turnpike Troubadours a bunch. They're just
killing it right now. They kind of had a hiatus
for a little while and then they're back full for us.
They're they're doing really great. I'm trying to think. There's
a band here in Austin called the Texas Exiles that's
really cool. It's Jimmie Dale, Gilmore's son Colin, and some
of the guys from the old band the Dirty River Boys.

(37:48):
So they're a lot of fun. There's a couple of
female artists. Shelby Stone is this gal from Oklahoma that
I've been watching and she's just incredible. She got a
great band and great voice, right, really good songs. Taylor Honeycut.
Honeycut is another kind of Southern rock girl. Bree Bagwell
another friend of ours from here in Texas. I could

(38:10):
go on and on and on. There's so many good,
good bands and good music out there right now. If
you're looking for cool stuff, going to the going down
the Red and dirt, you know, uh, Outlaw Country, rabbit Hole,
and you'll find anything you're looking for.

Speaker 2 (38:22):
Who's your Who's your dream get for the festival?

Speaker 3 (38:28):
Oh man?

Speaker 1 (38:32):
Yes, and be come up with a hard questions Cody.

Speaker 4 (38:37):
Yeah, gosh, putting me on the spot your Irish coffee.

Speaker 3 (38:43):
Have to go get some more or just top it
off with a little Jamison.

Speaker 4 (38:48):
JJ didn't get to see my my cool little dispenser
I got straight from Ireland.

Speaker 1 (38:59):
JJ just got jealous. JJ just got jealous.

Speaker 4 (39:04):
All right, Cody, have to be done from my office
from now on.

Speaker 1 (39:09):
Who who is your dream guest for the for the BBR.

Speaker 4 (39:14):
Man We've uh, I don't know. I honestly, I've had
We've had so many of them already. I really have
to think about it. I couldn't even answer that right now.

Speaker 1 (39:25):
Well, JJK, thanks for being our surprise guest. Talk about
your because this is bonus having you here with us.
You're you're you're a huge hit right now in Austin
with the gamblers and all across the country. What has
the change because all three of us are going through change.
JJ went from baseball to to professional bull riding team

(39:47):
bull riding. Cody and I both are in the semi
retirement phase of our lives, and that's been a neat
similarity for Cody and I to talk about. But JJ,
that transition. Honestly, Bud, I don't know if I've ever
I've seen you this happy before.

Speaker 5 (40:02):
Yeah, I don't know if I have.

Speaker 6 (40:04):
But simultaneously, I don't know if I've ever worked as
hard as I have for these last three plus years.
And it's crazy because for the twenty two, twenty three,
twenty four years I worked in minor league baseball and
worked for the Ryan family and with the Around Rock
Express and the Hooks and getting to be part of
that brotherhood of the one hundred and sixty plus minor

(40:25):
league teams and getting together every year and sharing best
practices and those relationships. Like was super happy and just great, great,
great time in my life.

Speaker 5 (40:35):
But this is it's just completely different.

Speaker 6 (40:38):
It's a completely different sport, it's completely different animal literally
and figuratively.

Speaker 5 (40:43):
The adrenaline and the excitement.

Speaker 6 (40:45):
Around it, I mean, it's it's it's it's addicting, it
really is. And you know the fact that you know
one of the realities of Cody's life and he talked
about it going on the road for one hundred and
sixty days a year or what you and Joe t
and everybody, all of us that have been in My
league baseball.

Speaker 5 (41:01):
You know, it's not just the seventy one plus home dates.
It's year.

Speaker 6 (41:04):
It's it's the other things that you're doing at your ballpark.
And now you're getting ready to go into comacks. You know,
you guys are gonna be running one hundred and fifty
plus events a year, and it just it takes it
out of you. And so it's it's not a sprint,
it's more of a marathon. And you got to you
gotta just kind of like, you got to love that process.
And so when you do that in minor league baseball,
you do that in music. It's it's this kind of

(41:25):
long thing that you just kind of are in it for.
But this sport is different. It's it's eight seconds wreck,
eight seconds wreck, and it's going to the weekend and
then taking three or four days off going to the weekend.

Speaker 5 (41:36):
So it's just it's it's wildly different.

Speaker 6 (41:38):
But you know, and it's the people in in minor
league baseball and the people in music are just great people.
But these cowboys and the people that we get to
be in and around the difference is this is that
these guys that put on the Austin Gambler's uniform or
any of the other teams, every time they put on
our uniform, like if they put on somebody puts on
a squirrel's uniform and express like they're more they're not

(41:59):
going to die, right, They're just not you know, they
might strike out or they you know, they might get mildlier.
Like our guys. Every time they put on our uniform
on the weekend for.

Speaker 5 (42:08):
An event or even practice, they can die.

Speaker 1 (42:10):
You know.

Speaker 6 (42:10):
These are fifteen hundred to two thousand pound animals that
are just beasts, just incredible animal athletes that are big, fast, strong,
and so to be around that, to be around those
guys and those cowboys and the bravery and the courage
that they have and what they do for themselves, but
really for their family, it's it's it's really cool and

(42:30):
it's inspiring and it's just it's been a lot of fun.

Speaker 5 (42:32):
It's been fun for me, it's been fun for my family.

Speaker 6 (42:36):
You know, we've all gotten to build teams from the
ground up and build stadiums and got to do that.
But now we're building this league, you know, to where
when you come into your different teams that you've started,
you know, the Southern League or the Eastern League. You know,
baseball's been around since eighteen hundreds and those leagues have too,
But you know, we got to start this new team
at the same time this new league format and this

(42:56):
team format was going. So it's been a lot of
fun and just heaven't been able to get to spend
time with you and have your family and hosting them
at our events. Cody has you know, we joked about
it earlier, but he's been a part of this since
the beginning. We made up a band called the Ghosts
of Kenny Rodgers and they actually did the kickoff event
for us and launched us in Austin. He's had his

(43:16):
side project with George Devor, his Scattered and Shouted side project,
and then we just had Reckless Kelly kickoff this year's
game more Days our most successful ever. So it's been
fun because I've gotten to do it not only with
a new group of people, but I've gotten to share
it with all the people that I've grown up with
over the last twenty twenty five years.

Speaker 1 (43:34):
We're gonna start winding down here, MP, I'm gonna come
back to you for one more one shot. But before
I do that, JJ Cody mentioned Turnpike Troubadours in a
band that he likes, Reckless. Kelly and Turnpike played at
Red Rocks, and JJ, you were there.

Speaker 6 (43:50):
Ish I was there, so we knew.

Speaker 5 (43:59):
So we were so fired up, but never been.

Speaker 1 (44:01):
By the way out there in parting time. The three
of us, we're late. We're late a lot because the
three of us are together now.

Speaker 5 (44:08):
So here's the thing. So I go there.

Speaker 6 (44:10):
I'm so fired up and never been to Red Rocks
before going to see Turnpike.

Speaker 5 (44:14):
But RK was going to open for him, but URK
was gonna be the middle band.

Speaker 6 (44:18):
They were supposed to be this other group that was opening,
then Reckless, then Turnpike.

Speaker 5 (44:23):
So we get there.

Speaker 6 (44:24):
We're in the parking lot, we're tailgating, not a big surprise.
We hear music. We think it's the opening band. We're
finishing up some cocktails. We're getting ready to walk in,
and as we're walking in, I hear ark and I'm like,
oh shit, and my buddy goes, oh, they're just getting started,
and I'm like, nope, they're just finishing. I know what

(44:44):
that song is. And they're just finishing. I'm like, no, no, no,
I'm like, oh yeah, they're just finishing. We don't even
get through the ticket line, and thanks coming out, folks,
get ready for a turnpike.

Speaker 1 (44:55):
I did not know that. I like, I did not
know that, you missed the whole show.

Speaker 5 (44:59):
It's the whole show.

Speaker 6 (45:00):
So we go in there and I'd had a few cocktails.
I started getting I just I went into this tornado
a funk. My next door neighbor literally had to slap
me in the face to snap me out of it.

Speaker 5 (45:13):
And then we go to see Cody. We go to
see Cody.

Speaker 6 (45:16):
We go party with Cody at this bar in this
whatever small town afterwards, and I'm literally having to look
into the face and light them.

Speaker 5 (45:22):
Oh man, you guys. Set was great, so much fun.
I didn't tell like, I didn't months later that we
actually didn't see any of it.

Speaker 1 (45:33):
Oh that's great. Uh mp, go one shot and then
I'm going to finish up with Cody. I got I
got five or six quick answer questions for Cody. Then
we'll call it a day.

Speaker 2 (45:42):
Your own party time as one ask for what JJ
is doing. I had a chance to see a few
years ago when it rolled through. It's it's fantastic. I
got to meet some of the writers at the Annual
Sports Editors Convention a couple of years ago. They came
by to promote what they were doing. How do you
it's such a it's such an intense, quick thing, but
it's so visceral, like as soon as you see it,
you love it. How do you get the word out

(46:04):
and tell people what they're missing by by not going
out to these events?

Speaker 1 (46:08):
Well, National TV every Sunday is one good way of
getting the word out.

Speaker 6 (46:13):
It's it's interesting MP because you know when when Parney
starts a baseball team or when Cody, You're like, you
don't have to explain a stick and ball sport. Everybody
knows what baseball is, basketball, football, They've all played it.
Like for us, like we've got this whole thing of
not only promoting and creating awareness for we've got to educate.

Speaker 5 (46:32):
You know, what are the gambwichs. We're not a poker team?

Speaker 1 (46:34):
Right?

Speaker 5 (46:34):
What is PBR?

Speaker 6 (46:35):
We're not having a pass Blue Ribbon drinking contest?

Speaker 5 (46:38):
What is you know?

Speaker 1 (46:39):
What is.

Speaker 5 (46:41):
It would be?

Speaker 1 (46:42):
Except although by bush Light the sponsors bush Light instead
of Pass.

Speaker 6 (46:47):
So it's a lot of education, but we really feel
like if we can get you out to an event,
just get you physically there. And TV does a great
jobs as Parney talked about, but if we can get
you to an event, we feel like that you'll be OpEd.

Speaker 5 (46:59):
And so that's really that's really.

Speaker 6 (47:01):
The challenges to create not only awareness and promotion, but
but education and getting folks there because once they do,
you know they're gonna have a great time.

Speaker 4 (47:12):
Merch is great, right, Cody, It's killer great merche And
I will say just as a kid who grew up
in rodeo and around Rodeo, you know it was it's
a whole different thing. What the PBR is doing is
so different and it really legitimizes the sport. They've done
an incredible job with turning it into something that people

(47:33):
can really get behind, you know, with being able to
root for your home team, being able to root for
your home writers. It's it's a lot more structured, it's
easier to understand, and like JJ said, once you see it,
you're hooked. So congratulations JJ on just a fantastic job
on really taking a sport that is one of the

(47:53):
oldest sports in America you know as cowboys just out
on the range, you know, doing this stuff for fun
to creating a national national team that people can be
proud of and and an organization that is going to
just keep on growing.

Speaker 3 (48:09):
So great job man.

Speaker 5 (48:13):
So here's the idea first year of CarMax.

Speaker 6 (48:17):
We bring a PBR event, we get Joe Tana Bowl,
and then we close it out with a reckless guy.
Hell yeah, hell yeah, hell yeah, I want to I
want to see the size of that fucking bull.

Speaker 1 (48:32):
Is just going to have change. It's gonna have Joe
on the back of it.

Speaker 3 (48:35):
Bowl, Gotta ride Joe t for eight seconds. It's gonna
be me with a Viking helmet on.

Speaker 1 (48:50):
Party time is truly five friends talking now today. This
is great. All right, Cody, I'm gonna hit you with one,
but this is gonna take like two, two or three
minutes tops. Your favorite reckless Coey song that you've ever
played Ragget is the road great song mine is what
Cody Crazy last or Raw. It's been dedicated to me

(49:10):
quite a few times. Your favorite song of all time
not by reckless.

Speaker 3 (49:14):
Kelly Poncho and Lefty Towns Zannes.

Speaker 1 (49:17):
Okay, favorite concert venue you've ever played in your entire career.

Speaker 3 (49:22):
Green Hall.

Speaker 1 (49:25):
That's in Where is it?

Speaker 4 (49:26):
It's in Green, Texas, just outside of New Bronfelds, just
south of Austin.

Speaker 1 (49:30):
Okay, this is going to be a wrong one. This
is the final one. You're you're playing your twenty seven
instruments that you play. You have, you have three or
four other musicians to form your own band, living or dead.
Who's your band? That your your fantasy band that you
can pick? Wow, I know that's how horrible of it.

(49:51):
That's our final question of the day.

Speaker 2 (49:53):
I think you want to go to living musicians. I
don't think the dead ones are going to be much eier.

Speaker 1 (49:59):
Well, after we've been on the tour bus, sometimes Cody's
been dead on the stage.

Speaker 3 (50:04):
Yeah, a couple of times.

Speaker 8 (50:08):
It all shots fired, Cody. Remember literally one time we
were somewhere and I said, are you late? Are you late?
And you said, I haven't gotten the where the.

Speaker 3 (50:25):
Oh? Where? Where the fuck is he called yet? Are
you called.

Speaker 1 (50:31):
Virginia Beach JJ. He literally walked from our band our
van right onto the stage. Joe t was there from
we dropped him off on the side door, walk right
on the stage. By the time we got it. He
was in his third song already played the fel but
back to your back to your your fantasy band. Can
you pick? Can you pick it? Or is that too tough?

Speaker 5 (50:48):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (50:49):
John Jorgenson from the Desert Rose Band on guitar, my
brother Willie on drums, because that would just be awesome.
And uh, let's see bass players. Oh gosh, probably uh
flee just.

Speaker 3 (51:08):
Yeah, flee.

Speaker 4 (51:09):
Sure he's the only bass player anybody knows. Let's see probably,
Uh Jerry Lee Lewis on piano for picking dead.

Speaker 1 (51:21):
Guys who's singing?

Speaker 3 (51:27):
Oh uh we have Linda Ronstad.

Speaker 7 (51:31):
Oh hell yeah, I'm just gonna do the Bob Willis
thing and stand in the back of a cigar in
my mouth holding my fiddle, going, hey.

Speaker 1 (51:44):
I love it, I love it. Man. Well, I think
that's a great way of wrapping up this edition of
Party Time. Uh JJ thank you for being a surprise
guest into the party pub club. Hell yeah, hell yeah,
it was awesome. Uh there Cody's show. Cody's showing all
his squirrels hats. Oh yeah, hell hell yeah, look at
all that. You never know who's going to pop up

(52:06):
on Parting Time. Just as JJ Gott showed US today
from the Austin Gamblers. We're looking forward to another inning
in season two. We're not done yet. Whyatt and I
have a plan. So looking forward to to more shows
dropping soon. Thanks for listening, everybody.

Speaker 3 (52:20):
Oh yeah hell yeah.

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist

It’s 1996 in rural North Carolina, and an oddball crew makes history when they pull off America’s third largest cash heist. But it’s all downhill from there. Join host Johnny Knoxville as he unspools a wild and woolly tale about a group of regular ‘ol folks who risked it all for a chance at a better life. CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist answers the question: what would you do with 17.3 million dollars? The answer includes diamond rings, mansions, velvet Elvis paintings, plus a run for the border, murder-for-hire-plots, and FBI busts.
