Speaker 3 (00:46):
Hello and welcome back to the Podcast Speakers series. I
will appearson, President of iHeart Podcast. Always good to be
with you. As usual, we like to get together with
some of our favorite hosts, talent, producers, thinkers in the
podcast space and talk about things that they're working on,
what's going on in their lives. And I'm really excited
today we get to talk to a lot of good
(01:06):
podcasters and about a lot of great podcasts, but today
we actually get to talk about the best podcast ever.
So we are joined by the host of the best
podcast ever. Raven and Miranda, thanks so much for spending.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Some time with us. Thanks so much for having us
will I love how that was in the podcast. Do
you actually do everything in unison like that? Is that
how works?
Speaker 4 (01:27):
That's obviously more lesbians, So it just happened exact same right, thanksactly.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
I wasn't aware that that's how that worked. Okay, that's learned.
Speaker 5 (01:36):
Something every day every day, That's what it's.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
So for those that don't know about the podcast, I
love the concept of this show because when we started
talking about making the show together, you didn't want to
just do the usual chat show. There's a couple of
those out there, in case you haven't noticed. You wanted
to do something truly unique from two truly unique people.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
And I love the concept of this.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Raven or Miranda, either one of you want to jump
in and just sort of explain the concept of how
the wheel works and how words play unto this because
it's such a fun concept for a podcast.
Speaker 6 (02:07):
Well, first of all, I'm so glad that you think so,
because we totally think so. And yeah, basically, as you said,
we spin a wheel, it generates a random word, and
then we talk about whatever that word is. And this
started for Raven and I kind of back with our
YouTube show because we had a little segment on it
called Tea Time and we would sit down and have
(02:28):
a drink or whatever and then pick a topic to.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
Just talk about.
Speaker 6 (02:32):
To do a podcast version of that was basically the
only way Raven would be down to do.
Speaker 7 (02:37):
The podcast because she was like, it.
Speaker 6 (02:39):
Has to be fun, it has so unique, it has
to be different, and I was like, okay, cool, let's
do that. And it kind of has grown into this show,
which is super fun to do, super interesting.
Speaker 7 (02:49):
We're having a great time.
Speaker 8 (02:50):
I like it too.
Speaker 4 (02:50):
Because as guests come on, I think Babe says it best.
But it evens the playing field, like, of course we
want to get to understand what the celebrities are doing
in their life, but for me, actually I kind of
rather find out the information about their lives that they
don't talk about all the time.
Speaker 8 (03:07):
That helps us get to that.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
This is a great way to do it.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
Is it not nerve wracking though, Like the fact that Raven,
you're basically saying I will only do the podcast if
we do this way, that would I think be very
nerve wracking for so many people. Do you ever get
nervous about what the word is going to be or
not knowing what to talk about or.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
Anything like that.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
No, the only thing that happens is I get angry
if they try to tell me what the word is.
Speaker 8 (03:28):
They're like, no, we have to cure.
Speaker 4 (03:29):
I'm like, I don't want to know. Like I enjoy
the not knowing of it all. I think being a
part of the view and different television shows, everything has
been so scripted for.
Speaker 8 (03:38):
Me, so plotted, that I have to stick to a script.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
And with a podcast, you know, they're like, well, you
need to show your authentic self and who you are
and not Raven Baxter. And I'm like, well, then keep
me on my toes, because if you tell me my
word beforehand, I'm going to have all these words prepared
and I'm going to sound scripted. But if you ask
me something out of the blue, you'll never know which
going to get. And we love our editor for those
(04:02):
moments where we get stuff I'm not supposed to say.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
I love it.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
And so, just to confirm for everybody who's watching or listening,
neither of you know the word.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
Your guests don't know the word. None of this when
you're jumping in.
Speaker 6 (04:13):
We even had we did an episode with somebody and
their team was like, well, we need to know, we
need to know, and we're like, okay, fine, So you know,
our producer had to tell the team, but we said
so many times in those emails, please do not tell
the word to the verson, like we really want them
to be surprised.
Speaker 8 (04:31):
And we didn't know either. Our producer, Jensen is amazing.
Speaker 6 (04:34):
Ever, we never know the words the only and that
was never even going to be a thing, like we
always knew that, we never wanted to know those words.
They had to be and it was the games that
for me at one point, I was kind of like
I need to know a little bit more of the
details of the games in order to then understand like.
Speaker 7 (04:52):
How to play it. But Raven was like she didn't
want to know anything. So Raven's like totally in the dark.
Speaker 6 (04:59):
I'm I know a little bit about a game just
so I could actually like play.
Speaker 7 (05:02):
I'm a slower I learner I've been Raven.
Speaker 4 (05:04):
I think there's something interesting to not knowing and having
to show.
Speaker 7 (05:08):
Up with the words. I one hundred percent agree.
Speaker 4 (05:11):
You know, you see a lot of the times in
the industry. You know, oh my goodness, this person's picture
is so pretty and it looks like such a snapshot
of what's happening right then and there. But the truth
is that it's been curated, it's been photoshopped, it's been this,
it's been that, And to kind of counteract that, for
myself and for the audience, we're taking all that away
and going back to what reality actually is.
Speaker 6 (05:34):
Also, we don't want to have people on our show
who are just having repetition of the same interview or conversation.
They yeah, they're talking points exactly, and we don't want
talking points.
Speaker 7 (05:44):
We want you to come.
Speaker 6 (05:45):
In and have fun as a listener, as a guest
on the show, and kind of just like be taken
for a ride where yes, you know, I'm a person
who wants to sit down and have like meaningful and
intentional conversation. I'm a little bit more that style than Raven.
But we have like perfect blend in our show where
we can have a random word like pencil, and somehow
(06:05):
pencil can get us to childhood trauma, but Raven all
then bring us back into you know, the art room,
and it's this kind of full circle, very cool journey
that we all want it to take together.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Yeah, is the goal always to get it to childhood
traumas that's sort of what it's like, pencil or anything else,
just always trauma.
Speaker 7 (06:24):
My line child trauma.
Speaker 6 (06:26):
Raven clearly exhibiting her childhood trauma by having a stuffed
animal here today, so it's.
Speaker 7 (06:30):
Like childhood trauma.
Speaker 4 (06:32):
I think it's important though, Like I know that's a
joke and it's hilarious, but at the same time, anything
can lead to anywhere. That's the point, anything can lead
to anywhere. Everything stems from our childhood. But it's also
about lightning that moment as well. So, like my wife said,
she's more grounded. Although she's hilarious to me, but I'm
like the comic relief because I'll like fart in two seconds,
(06:53):
But like you know what I mean. It really is
the conversation of no matter who you are, no matter
where you come from, we've all had an ex experience
with a pencil or these.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
Yeah, so your very different personalities.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
Obviously a married couple, is this the first time you.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
Collaborated other than the whole marriage thing on a project
like this?
Speaker 4 (07:29):
No, we did a YouTube channel together and that lasted
for a little bit. I was editing, she was coming
up with the ideas, and it was just kind of
a mess.
Speaker 7 (07:38):
A project of this magnitude for sure. I mean marriage
is a project right like we did that. We're doing that,
and we.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
Also we have a production company and we're working with
each other when it comes to content on another platform
as well.
Speaker 2 (07:52):
Very cool. I love that.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
So what was surprising to me was we talked about
the fact that it could be nerve wracking to get
a word like this, and you mentioned people's PR teams
and their management teams.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
Being nervous about that.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
I thought it would be really difficult for you to
get big names to come on the show because part
of a team's job is to protect their clients and
worry about what they're going to be asked and make
sure there's no curve balls. But you've got everybody from
Demi Lovado to the Megan Trainer to Jojo see what
Like the list goes on of these A plus talent
that are coming on the show.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
Can you talk a little bit about that?
Speaker 3 (08:24):
Are you surprised you've been able to convince people to
come on and just talk about something they have no
idea what it's going to be when they come on
the show.
Speaker 7 (08:30):
So here's the deal.
Speaker 6 (08:31):
Will I am somebody who doesn't like being told no.
I was very determined from the beginning that when I
was going to go after whoever, I was going to
go by offering a very warm and kind invite to
come onto this podcast, that I was going to get
who I wanted to get, regardless of what any team
(08:51):
member might say. So it was a process of course,
but honestly, everyone was so receptive and we were like, hey,
it would be right to have Kiki on, let's go Jojo,
And I mean everything also was like so serendipitous with
how our bookings kind of went, because we would like
run into somebody randomly who we were talking about, like
Kiki Palmer, and we're like, oh my.
Speaker 7 (09:12):
God, and then yes, she wants to do it. And
when it comes.
Speaker 6 (09:15):
To the format, honestly, everyone has been very down.
Speaker 7 (09:20):
They're like, that's super cool, let's go. No one has
been particularly scared of the words.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
I mean, you also have to see that a lot
of the people they know that they're coming into my
and my wife's home innocence, And I think my career
over the years has proven that I don't like shock
value type of interviews.
Speaker 8 (09:38):
I'm not that type of person.
Speaker 4 (09:40):
And I think that the reputation that I've created over
the years has set a blanket and a comfy blanket
for these celebrities to come on and be like.
Speaker 8 (09:49):
You know what, this is fun.
Speaker 4 (09:50):
And also when we were coming up with the idea,
I would like to be on this show as a
guest because it's something different.
Speaker 8 (09:56):
This isn't just the view, this isn't Howard Stern.
Speaker 4 (09:58):
You don't have to worry about that, Like I don't
care about the tweet that just happened. I care about
what toilet paper you use and I use the same kind.
That's kind of the conversation and how does that connect
to your childhood trauma?
Speaker 3 (10:13):
Speaking of that, I mean, it goes to some really
interesting places. Without any spoilers here, Timmy Lovado's word was boundaries.
That's a pretty heavy word. Can you talk a little
bit about where the conversation went on that one?
Speaker 8 (10:25):
It went everywhere, It went everywhere.
Speaker 6 (10:26):
Demi shared how she struggled with boundaries and setting boundaries
with other people, particularly those that she loves, and that
was really relatable to Raven and I also how you
set boundaries with fans and people who love you, because
you want to let people in, but at the same
time you have to like draw the line somewhere.
Speaker 4 (10:46):
My version of boundaries was like, if I put too
many boundaries up, am I ever going to experiencing anything new?
We'll like over this trauma that's put these boundaries up
in the first place, and how to navigate that.
Speaker 6 (10:58):
And that was a different side of boundaries because that
brought us into the conversation of intention behind certain things,
like sometimes you know that you have to set a
boundary with a parent because they don't speak to you
in a way that you want to be spoken to.
But at other times you set a boundary that actually
isn't for your best self. It's more like you're hiding
(11:18):
behind something, so being rapidly honest with yourself. Another boundary
that you brought up was like land boundaries, like borders
and things of that nature, which was also interesting because
that's another form of a boundary, so it's not just
like psychology boundaries.
Speaker 4 (11:34):
I will say though, like some words like boundaries lend
itself to more serious conversations, and we try to explore
it as best as we can, and then there's some
words that just lend us to fun and exciting moments,
and you might get a couple of serious things here
and there.
Speaker 8 (11:50):
But one of the things I.
Speaker 4 (11:50):
Said to my wife a long time ago, I was like,
this is kind of like a sitcom on a podcast,
Like you never know what you're going to get, you know,
the will and grace of it all. You're crying in
one episode and laughinghysterically in another, And that's the kind
of entertainment that I like, and that weak joy. Because
we're YouTube fanatics, we just switch around and we go
left right center.
Speaker 6 (12:08):
How do you do both in one episode and then
you stop listening and feel totally bipolar and like you
have no idea what the fucks happened to?
Speaker 3 (12:15):
You?
Speaker 8 (12:15):
Are my favorite?
Speaker 5 (12:16):
Those are my favorite.
Speaker 2 (12:31):
So I'm curious.
Speaker 3 (12:32):
You know, Ravin, you've acted, and you've directed, you've posted,
You've done so many different kinds of things, and now
focus on doing a podcast.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
How's it different?
Speaker 3 (12:41):
What do you see as the sort of the fun
part of the advantages of a podcast versus any other
medium you've been in.
Speaker 4 (12:47):
I'm going to keep it one hundred with you will
the best part about this podcast is that I'm not
the main captain of this project.
Speaker 8 (12:55):
My wife is captaining this project. I'm her co captain,
po captain who comes in and pushes a button and
hopefully makes people laugh.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
And then I'm also supporting her behind the scenes when
she's going through her most stressful moments.
Speaker 8 (13:08):
And I can sit back and be.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
Like, Oh, I'm glad that's not me, because I produce
Raven's Home.
Speaker 8 (13:13):
I produce that so Raven.
Speaker 4 (13:14):
I understand the stress that it takes to put a
show up, no matter what kind of show it is,
and to give her that space to thrive.
Speaker 8 (13:21):
And she's doing an amazing job.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
As for me, history wise, you know, the view and
being in interviews myself and traveling. I did the news
for like two seconds when I was younger. This is
all accumulating to create this kind of content right now.
I'm taking what I learned over the years. And I
feel like sometimes when I'm on the podcast, I talk
(13:43):
so much. I'm like, Okay, here we go, here we go,
commercial break, and it's like, oh, you can kind of
calm down a little bit, like it's not that. But
at the same time, I'm an engine, you know what.
I mean, I keep the engine going when there's lulls,
when there's things necessary, and I use my expertise there
and my wife takes care of all the paperwork.
Speaker 7 (14:00):
A great voice of I don't know what you'd even
call it, but hey, everybody, thanks for listening. This is
Raven Simone and Miranda made it on the.
Speaker 8 (14:08):
It's called a disc jockey.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
Yeah, you're the DJ, the official DJ.
Speaker 3 (14:13):
So if you're the DJ, then Raven Miranda tell us
about your role in the show and how you like,
what it feels like for you to do a podcast,
and how it's maybe different than anything else you've done before.
Speaker 7 (14:23):
I love it, I really really love it.
Speaker 6 (14:26):
I have wanted to do a podcast for a very
long time, so for me, it's really exciting, and I'm
so happy to have found the team of people that
we have working with us at iHeart.
Speaker 8 (14:39):
So that is key.
Speaker 7 (14:42):
It's different from.
Speaker 6 (14:43):
Things I've done in the past, just because the scale
of it is much larger. I think that the potential
audience reach is much bigger than I've ever really had.
But honestly, the work that I've done over my life,
whether it's like working as a personal assistant or working
as a birth, Duela, or sure working in pr for
a bit. All of those experiences have helped me be better.
(15:06):
Here little things that you can take from everything, and
also just listening back to it's really exciting to be honest, like,
I feel like I'm growing and as I do this
podcast because I'm getting to, you know, exercise new muscles
and think in different ways. But when we listen to podcasts,
we may not always think about all of the steps
(15:27):
it took to get there. What actually makes the difference
between something that's captivating to listen to or a good
story versus not and getting to learn the skill of
really speaking eloquently and speaking well and telling stories.
Speaker 7 (15:41):
It's really cool. I love all of it.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
When we think about the things that have led to
successful podcasts and you think about the full package of
it and everything that you guys bring to it. One
of the things I love that the podcast industry is
smart shows do really well, and you guys bring this
combination of like curiosity and intelligence and fun and warmth
(16:04):
and just when listeners tune in, I know everybody who
tunes in will feel like these are just two people
I sort of want to hang with, And oh yeah,
when I leave after half an hour. I'm leaving with
a smile on my face, and I'm leaving feeling probably
a little bit smarter because there's going to be some
interesting things that were brought up. I'm so happy that
this is sort of the concept that you guys have
(16:24):
arrived with because it feels like such a good fit
of all these pieces of what we've seen over the
years work really well in podcasting, and there's really no
other show like it, so and you guys are the
only ones with a line.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
On the couch. So I feel like that sort of
tops it off.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
All right.
Speaker 4 (16:39):
I mean that's why it's called the best podcasts every.
Speaker 2 (16:43):
Yeah, it's the only one of that.
Speaker 3 (16:44):
So is there You probably don't like being asked this question,
but is there a dream guest.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
That you're like, you know what?
Speaker 7 (16:50):
You know who?
Speaker 2 (16:51):
I'd like to get off.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
Of the press circuit and onto the couch with us
to have a conversation about whatever that word is.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
Any dream guests you've been thinking about recently?
Speaker 4 (17:00):
I mean today, I'm gonna say Tom Cruise. He's so
in my head right now, you guys, let.
Speaker 8 (17:05):
Me tell you why though, Because we don't know Tom Cruise.
Speaker 4 (17:09):
We think we know, But what soap.
Speaker 8 (17:11):
Does he use? You know what I mean?
Speaker 4 (17:13):
Like, how does he feel about powdered laundry detergent compared
to you know, like a liquid, you know what I mean?
Speaker 7 (17:20):
Like for a really long me too, how he smells like?
But what detergent he uses?
Speaker 4 (17:24):
I want to know what he uses his His crisps
are always crispy.
Speaker 8 (17:28):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (17:28):
I just feel like he would be a fun one
to dive outside of the norm of how many bicycles
he has the.
Speaker 6 (17:35):
Co sign on that I love Tom Cruise. I think
you don't even know this about me, but I think
that Tom Cruise was like my first crush.
Speaker 7 (17:42):
But I mean, I come on, so Tom cur need
the need for speed all the way to the stat.
Speaker 2 (17:47):
That's a good one.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
All right, let's put out the back call right here,
Tom Cruise, if you're listening, Tom, come on, you need
to come on the podcast. So this guy in the world.
Speaker 8 (17:56):
But I also would love Cardi B.
Speaker 7 (17:58):
Cardi would be super fun.
Speaker 8 (18:00):
I want to ask Cardi B.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
What up? Cardi?
Speaker 7 (18:01):
How you been?
Speaker 1 (18:02):
Oh?
Speaker 8 (18:02):
Just how you've been?
Speaker 5 (18:02):
Okay?
Speaker 8 (18:03):
I love that, I love it. Ask you the first
question on the podcast.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
You've been thinking about that one for a while. Clearly,
yeah saw me Carty.
Speaker 3 (18:11):
As you can see for anybody listening, anybody watching, this
is the vibe of the show. It's super fun, it's
super smart. Couldn't think of two better hosts to host
the best podcast ever. So definitely check it out wherever
you listen to the podcast. But Raven Brandon, thanks for
spending a few minutes with us.
Speaker 5 (18:25):
Thank you so much.
Speaker 8 (18:26):
Will we have to have you on the podcast. We'll
talk about some cool stuff.
Speaker 3 (18:29):
Yeah, looking forward to it, and thank you everybody for
tuning in.
Speaker 2 (18:33):
And we'll see you again next week.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
