Speaker 3 (01:15):
I got two messages. You're gonna tell me which one
you want. The first one will empower you and make
you feel good. The second one is truth that will
set you free. I'm just telling you what's on the
(01:37):
menu these days in church. So you can get a
feel good or you can get truth that will set
you free. Now, the feel good is more popular, but
the truth that liberates you is not as popular. So
(02:02):
which one do you want? All right? So all the
people who want to feel good exit stage left. But
that's the world that we're in, where people just want
to feel good. It's almost like give me an injection
of something, you know, give me a pill. Don't help
(02:26):
me deal with the root of the problem, just help
me deal with the pain. And unfortunately too many of
my colleagues I have settled there to just make people
feel good. And there's nothing wrong. We're feeling good inspiration.
(02:49):
But what deals with your circumstances and situations that tend
to overwhelm you is transformation, because we live life from
the inside out. Jesus said men love darkness rather than
light John chapter three in his conversation with Nicodemus, And
(03:14):
of course what the context was not expressing that, you know,
people love the sin rather than do good or the
right thing. No, he was saying that people tend to
shy away from truth. They don't want to know the truth,
They rather live in blindness because the truth can be intimidating.
(03:38):
And that's why Jesus balanced truth with grace. There's need
for both the prophetic and the pastoral. The prophetic that
calls out sin, the pastoral that offers redemption, healing and forgiveness.
And why is truth not as popular? And I'm talking
about the truth not a truth because truth, it's confrontational.
(04:07):
It confronts you about how you're thinking, how you're living,
the choices that you're making. Many people don't want to
be confronted, so the rather than have a sermon that
sounds good, makes them feel good, but doesn't demand much
of them. And that's not going to free you from anything.
(04:28):
It'll just give you a temporary fix. But truth brings
the conviction necessary for change. You'll never change until you're
willing to be confronted with the truth about yourself, are
(04:49):
you're living, how you're thinking, things that you're doing, the
relationship you have, et cetera. It's only truth, when it comes,
that'll free you and heal you. And I will tell
you there are times when the truth feels great, but
there are time when the truth doesn't feel so good.
(05:10):
How many have ever been hurt by the truth, you
know what I'm talking about, But it heals what comes
out of it. It redeems, it restores, it refreshes. The
Holy Spirit is called the spirit of truth. So you
made me proud as a pastor to day because you
(05:31):
chose truth. Thank you. So this is going to hurt,
so good, but necessary as I pray for the sheep
(05:54):
that I have responsibility over under the chief shepherd and
Bishop of souls Christ. This is called Christian Cultural Center.
It comes out of a revelation that I had back
in nineteen eighty five that Christianity has been made into
(06:16):
a religion. But essentially, Jesus was building a culture, He
was forming a nation, a people. He called it building
his church. And see we confuse the word church because
(06:37):
we think of this as church. But what he was
talking about is an ecclesia, an assembly, a gathering of
people who would be in special relationship with him and
through him, with the Father. This is what he intended.
(06:58):
And he said against that gathering of people, the gates
of hell will not prevail. Do you remember hearing that,
if not reading it, do you remember hearing that he
said to those that he had launched out to begin
the building of this institution, this organism. He said, all power,
(07:24):
all authority has been given to me, both in heaven
and on earth. Go therefore, just so you'll know what's
backing you up, and preach the gospel. Make disciples, go
into all the world cosmos, the social order, and be witnesses.
(07:53):
And in order to be witnesses, he said, you need power,
and that power is the Holy Spirit. So I want
you to think about culture as you've heard it here
at CCC. Have some competition today, but think about it.
(08:19):
Culture is an integrated system of beliefs, traditions, customs, ideas, products, values,
technologies that constitute the life of a people. Essentially, it's
the sum total of the character and personality of a society,
of a nation, of a community. It's made up of
(08:39):
certain traditions, certain attitudes, certain customs, institutions and language. And
this is true of any culture around the world, around
the world. And you know there's American culture, and with
(09:01):
an American culture, there are all these subcultures cultures within
a culture, right, the Caribbean is a culture, but within
the Caribbean there are subcultures. There's a difference between a
Trinidadian and a Jamaican. Did I get that right? We
(09:25):
share that common designation Caribbean, well Caribbean, and amongst Latinos,
there's a difference between Puerto Ricans, Colombians, Panamanians those Panamanians,
(09:45):
and yet it's all an expression of culture. In one
part of the Caribbean, you say rice and peas, another
part it's teas and rice. Traditions are the beliefs that
the culture holds and passes on from generation to generation.
(10:11):
Attitudes are the intellectual and emotional dispositions that dominate that culture.
The customs are the practices that the people in the
culture engage in. For the most part, we're talking about
what predominates within the culture. The institutions are those organizations
(10:37):
and entities within the culture. Whether it's government, education, finance, arts, entertainment,
doesn't matter, but they are essentially an expression of the culture.
It cracked me up one day when I thought about baseball,
American baseball and the World Series, and we were the
(11:04):
only ones in the world in the series, but we
call it the World Series an expression American thought, American attitude,
American culture, right, and language. We have our own language
(11:25):
that we speak here in America. And language is powerful
because it comes out in the literature, media, arts, entertainment, conversations,
and that's what makes up a culture. And language is powerful.
I'm not going to spend more time on that because
(11:48):
I'm going in a different direction than that, but it's
powerful because remember, whoever controls the language controls the conversation.
And guy's a narrative. And that's why language tends to
be hijacked in our society as quickly as possible to
try to control and guide the narrative. But what is
(12:09):
true socially amongst humanity? Guess what it's true for Christians?
Jesus intended to create a Christian culture. And I'm talking
about a set of traditions, attitudes, customs, institutions, and language
because even in language, Christians we speak in a language
(12:33):
that only other Christians understand. You're on your job and
you're talking to one of your Christian friends while a
non Christian coworker is listening. You turn to that Christian
colleague and you say, the enemy has been busy, man,
And the non Christians here is and says, well, you
(12:55):
got enemies? Who's after you?
Speaker 5 (12:56):
Man?
Speaker 3 (12:56):
What's going on? But we know in our language we're
talking about the Yeah, you know, things happen the blood.
See people who are not in that cultural context and
don't understand the language them no idea what's going on
(13:17):
and what we're talking about.
Speaker 5 (13:18):
It's called Christian Eese, and that's great internally, but becomes
a problem when we can't speak the language of the
culture that we're trying to influence.
Speaker 3 (13:31):
That's a different conversation. We have traditions, a set of
beliefs that we pass from generation to generation. Amen beliefs
about God, beliefs about what it means to be human,
beliefs about what it means to live in this world.
We have attitudes. We should have certain attitude, not some
(13:52):
of the attitudes I've come across, and those are the
Christians I want to talk to today. I want to
talk to you dry, broken, wounded, discouraged, unproductive, anxious, set
(14:13):
up Christians. And I want to present a question to y'all.
Why tried a little West Indian accent it didn't work.
Why our attitudes are anchored in those beliefs. But if
your attitudes are not anchored in those beliefs, then your
(14:35):
attitude can be inconsistent with those beliefs. Just like in
a society, customs are practices, right. We know that America
expresses a certain set of beliefs about what it means
to be a human person. Yet the practices that have
gone on in the country over the last several hundred
years have been inconsistent with those beliefs. And thank God
(14:57):
that we have the opportunity to change the institutions, the language,
the practices, even when we can't change the attitude of
some people. But as Christians, we should have a certain attitude.
(15:17):
In the Bible, the Book of Genesis, I try to
go there because I figured everybody has read that by now.
First three questions in the Bible number one, and this
is after sin. Notice the questions come after we mess
(15:38):
it up. Right after sin the questions come into play.
First question, where are you? King Jane? Where art thou right?
Where are you? And how many know that God never
asked a question to get information that happens we're in
(15:59):
trouble because God knows everything. He's omniscient. It's one of
his attributes. So when God asks a question, it's not
to get information, it's to stimulate thought. It becomes a
moment of self examination and reflection. So when he asked
(16:21):
the question where are you to Adam and Eve, it
was to get them to stop and think, not about
what they did that was too late, but the results
of what they did. It was a call for examination
(16:44):
of the soul, and the soul working purposes, definition, working definition,
the mind, the will and the emotions, and integrated system
that make us who we are. The mind, the will,
and emotions, the soul the center who we are. The
(17:06):
Bible talk about the heart, and a lot of this
language is interchangeable. Don't get confused by it. Simply seeing
means the central motivating factor of a person's life. So
when God said where are you? It was a call
to self examination, examination of the soul coming out of
(17:28):
actions that changed the individual and their relationship with the world,
with each other and with God. Remember they were hiding now, right,
And that's important. Second question, equally important, who told you
(17:49):
you were naked? And that's important because essentially it's asking
the question who or what's informing you, because cause whatever
is informing you will influence how you think, the conclusions
you come to, the judgments that you make, how you
process information, and ultimately the actions you take something other
(18:14):
than God came into play that was now informing at
him and Eve. And God was not asking the question
who told you? He knew? But he wanted to bring
it to their attention against stimulate thought self examination. What's
informing you now? Because whatever's informing you has got you
(18:39):
hiding from me, terroorized at the sight of me, the
one who loves you. But that's the nature of sin.
All sin manifests in hiding. What's informing you? Number one?
Where are you? Number two? What's informing you with me?
(19:00):
Number one? Where are you? Number two? What's informing you?
Third question? Did you eat? And that was simply an
opportunity to take responsibility for your action, because until you
do that, you can't offer forgiveness and redemption and change
(19:24):
and forward movement and healing. You've got to accept responsibility.
And the beautiful thing is God was already prepared to
remove the guilt and wait of accepting that responsibility, because
when you accept responsibility, it can be heavy. And guilt
(19:45):
is simply the soul, the conscience recognizing the loss of integrity. Yeah,
you feel it? Come on, how ma have ever lied
(20:07):
and felt something bad after you lied? How have you
ever lied. I want to see if you lie? Now,
how have you ever lied? You feel the guilt. The
guilt is simply the conscience recognizing that you just lost
your integrity. Integrity is honesty, consistency, honorableness, truthfulness, and you
(20:38):
feel it because God made us that way to feel it. Amen.
So just like we ask where are you? What's informing you?
And did you eat? The same way we asked the
individual as a culture, where is America? What's informing America?
(21:07):
Did America eat something that's causing it some physical reaction?
And that means simply did you buy into something a
way of thinking. Well, it's true for the church too,
where's the church? Had breakfast? One day before he passed,
(21:29):
Bishop doesnt Touto and we were talking and at that
time it was a little bit beyond abolition of apartheid
in South Africa and I said, Bishop, how is the
church in South Africa today? And he said the church
is in crisis. He said, during apartheid, the church knew
what it was against. After apartheid, the church didn't know
(21:52):
what it was for. And that's a problem if we
can only be defined by crisis. So where is the
church what's informing us? What have we eaten? Because the
way God planned it is the church should inform the culture,
not the culture informing the church. And unfortunately that's what's happening.
(22:19):
That's what's happening.
