Speaker 1 (01:08):
Stories in scripture are interpreted, they can be true to
their texts, to their contexts, like the Exodus story, which
was about the children of Israel's deliverance from Egypt right
and their journey across the Red Sea out into the wilderness.
But the Exodus story was also used by African Americans

(01:30):
to deal with the context here in America with regard
to slavery, and there earned interpretation of that text allowed
them to make it their own and believe that God
desired them too to experience liberation and freedom from that condition,
and it fuelled their resistance against systems of oppression within

(01:56):
American society and brought the kind of change that America needed.
It was because they saw that story personalized that when
I was in South Africa during apartheid as well as
post apartheid, but during apartheid, the South Africans, persons of

(02:16):
color and South African blacks, they looked across the ocean
to America and African American experience and also drew from
that story of the exodus. Immigrants from Europe who came
to America looked at the Texan Deuteronomy where it talked
about processes of immigration, and they associated themselves with that

(02:39):
immigration experience and that became their story, and that hermineutic
helped to liberate them and helped them resist some of
the systemic things that were happening in the nation as
they sought to assimilate into American society. So hermaeutic, how
you interpret things, it's critical, and so it is with

(03:00):
the story of Joseph, because you can interpret the story
as a story about how persistence, integrity, resilience, and hard
work can elevate you in life no matter what context

(03:21):
you're placed in. That's one lens amen And is that
a reasonable interpretation of that? Absolutely, he was up, he
was down family issues, even though he was responsible for
some of those family issues because Joseph had a very

(03:44):
naive arrogance about him, so he started stuff. Jacob was
guilty of showing favoritism, which provoked as other children to resentment.
So it's a solid story if we look at it
in terms of hard work, resilience, and integrity. But I

(04:09):
want to put a different lens on it for the
simple reason is that there are three phrases within chapter
thirty nine that creates a tension. We're going to look
at those verses, but first let me talk about tension
because a few weeks ago we talked about the tension

(04:32):
between the ideal and the reality, the tension between a
promise that God gives you and the reality of daily life. Amen.
So God gave Abraham and a promise of land descendants
and that he would be elevated to a place where

(04:54):
one of those descendants would be a blessing to all
nations of the earth. Powerful. But they couldn't have children.
They were barren. That was the reality. So you understand,
whenever God gives you a promise, he starts stuff because
that promise puts you in attention between the beauty, the wonder,

(05:15):
the glory of that promise and the reality of circumstances
and situations that can be diametrically opposed to that promise.
You told me this, but I'm experiencing this. So they
give you three definitions of tension. Number one, a place

(05:35):
of mental and emotional stress. How many know of mental
and emotional stress, absolutely, and they work together because remember,
whatever the mind cannot contain, it imposes on the body.
So quite often what you experience physically is a result

(05:58):
of what you've been experiencing mentally. It creates stress. A
place of tension. Second definition, a state of being stretched
in new directions. How many no good things can be
can create a cost tension. Absolutely, especially when you're given

(06:22):
opportunities that force you to move to a new level
in life. That can be very stressful because now you're
between the tension of where you are, the person you are,
and the person you need to become. In order to
take full advantage of that opportunity, may mean you have
to go back to school, sit with some counselors, broaden

(06:46):
your knowledge, your relationship network. It may make some very
hard demands, but you're looking at the price. It may
mean more money for you, more influence for you, another
quality of life. It may mean all of that, but
what it's going to take can create tension, and some

(07:09):
people will reject the opportunity because they don't want to
deal with the tension. And I will tell you, when
you get busy in life and your plate is full,
you begin to judge relationships by the degree of tension
that come with it. Turn your neighbors say, now you're

(07:31):
talking to you, it's all over your face. Come on,
how do you know what I'm talking about? Can we
speak frankly? Here? Never knew who frank was? But can
we spreak frankly? If I spot a relationship is going
to be high maintenance and create tension unless it's a

(07:56):
command of God, unless I got the Midnight revelation, unless
the choir seeings, Oh I rather pass? How many No,
that's just you. See, life is so intense right now,

(08:18):
so busy, so fast paced, especially in New York, right
that there's very little margin. So we have to be
very selective, very intentional with our choices, very intentional with
our spaces, the spaces that we allow people to occupy

(08:43):
in our lives. We have to be careful. Attension can
be the result of an opportunity that stretches us in
new directions that we have to decide is this worth it?
That's why every decision you make in life is a
value judgment costs versus value, and sometimes it costs you

(09:09):
more than it's worth. During your neighbors say he's talking
about somebody. You know, it's not just a thing, it
could be a person. Third definition, let's look at it.
Tension is created when we're trying to strike a balance
between seemingly opposing elements in our life. Opposing elements and

(09:36):
how many know that God's promises can oppose your circumstances.
Currently they seem to be an opposition right, God called
you to do something, and then all this other stuff
is going on and it seems to be an opposition.
And that third definition is what stirs my question about

(09:56):
how I interpret Joseph in his life because all that
Joseph went through, and please listen, it took time. So
he didn't go through up and down in a week.
It was years where his faith was tested. Amen, these

(10:18):
emotions were tested. He was already separated from his family, right,
there was that tension and remembering that relationship and concern
because how many read the whole story, He was concerned
continually about his family, they whereabouts, their condition, his father,
his mother. So to be a strange from his family
and a whole new context, strange environment to him, that

(10:41):
was stressful. But what got me are these words. Looking
at all that he went through. Let's go to chapter
thirty nine, verse two, would you read the first five
words one more time? That's a problem. That's a problem,

(11:06):
and your hermeneutic of the story better take this problem
into consideration. Let's go to verse twenty one. Would you
read the first six words? Could you read those first
six words again? Three's a charm? One more time. Just

(11:29):
let's go to verse twenty three. The keeper of the
prison did not look into anything that was under Joseph's authority.
Why if the Lord was with him, why then did
he go through all the things that he went through.

(11:51):
Why is he Why wasn't he just elevated and left there?
Why the issue with his brothers, Why being sold to slavery?
Why being elevated only to have this woman come into
the picture that sends you to jail, to experience elevation

(12:16):
in prison, and then place in a position of power
and authority over the entire nation, a very powerful empire
at the time. If the Lord is with you, do
you still go through stuff? You see? Herminudic care is
important how you interpret the Lord being with you. It's

(12:37):
critical because some people think that when you say the
Lord is with you, it means they are exempt from trial.
Tribulation challenges a Potiphar's wife that somehow the Lord is
with you means you are insulated protected, you don't have

(13:00):
to deal with any stuff. But there must be something
wrong with that hermeneutic. We look at Joseph's life, and
this is important, folks, because how you interpret the Lord
is with you will influence your expectations of God and

(13:24):
of life, even your expectations of the devil, because you
can have an expectation of him. The Law's with me,
with me, you can't touch me. What does that mean?
The Lord is with you. Jesus called the disciples together
and he sings, Allow, Peter said. Peter said, Satan seeks

(13:48):
to have you and sift you like weak. Now listen.
He could picture that. That was language that provoked imagery.
He's seen wee sifted. He could picture that. And then

(14:13):
Jesus gives him these encouraging work. But I prayed for you.
Sound like y'all we come and share our crisis, and you,
what do you say? I'm praying for you? But wait
a minute. Omnipotent God, who speaks to the wind, who
speaks to material things, who multiplies a little boy's lun

(14:33):
who raises the dead, you're gonna pray for me? How
about stopping the devil? How about that one? Jesus. Joseph's
story is an amazing story of divine providence in that,
in spite of all that went down, the story ends
with these words, what was meant for evil? What sought

(14:59):
to undermine, destroy, discourage, disillusion, me was used for good. See,
Providence looks at the big picture. God does not lose
control or freak out because of a little piece of

(15:23):
the puzzle that you're wrestling with today. There may not
even be an issue tomorrow, but to you it is
tank amount of failure. Oh God, come down, Jesus, come on,
you know how we get Come on, come on, we

(15:45):
freak out, repan it. And here's the contact, here's the situation,
and it seems insurmountable. And and here you are. And
God's looking at this, and he's saying, it's okay. How
many have you been through some things that you didn't

(16:05):
think you would make it to the other side. I
think it's a pattern. I think it's a pattern. God says,
get in the boat and I'll meet you on the
other side. I think it's a pattern because he doesn't
get in the boat with you. He sends you in
the boat. I'll catch up to you later, knowing the

(16:32):
storm is going to be there in the middle of
the cross over, and he just coolly comes walking. There
are three foundational principles that undergird divine providence, and I
want to share them with you. And next week, when

(16:56):
we come back together, because it's gonna take a moment
to unpack each one of them. And that's why I
don't want to start something that I can't finish. Amen.
But in my mind, in my herbaneutic of this message

(17:17):
and this meeting, you got a lot. You got a lot. Amen,
close your bibles. That's all staid. I will tell you. You

(17:42):
inspire me to study, to learn, to keep growing. You
forced me to be twenty five miles ahead of you,
and I love it. I love as I watch you
looking up things that I'm saying while I'm saying them,
so I better be accurate. I love it. Only a

(18:07):
fool despises wisdom and instruction, but it's by wisdom that
God built the universe. So I think it's going to
take some wisdom to build your life. And what better
place to get wisdom than from Almighty God. Hey man,

(18:28):
come on slap high five with three people. Tell them
I got that word today. Let me close with this.
Every day, every day you are interpreting things. You're interpret
You are interpreting circumstances, situations, conversations, information right, and you

(18:55):
have to be conscious of the principles and methodologies that
are guiding you because if they're not solid and based
in truth and wisdom, especially guided by scripture, then you
can reach wrong conclusions. You could have a stressed out
life unnecessarily all because of your poor hermeneutics. But here's

(19:21):
where your mind is renewed, your life transformed. Isn't it
wonderful that you can go to church and get smart?
You always hear me say if you're the smartest one

(19:42):
in your group. You need a new Pray that God
continues to preserve and protect what He's blessed us with,
what He's entrusted to our care and our stewardship responsibility.
What Ron Walters said about this ministry is so true.

(20:03):
Even if I was just a member and somebody else
was the pastor that this was the experience, It is true.
God has blessed you. He has blessed us with something special. Hey,
nud come on, let's pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for

(20:24):
answering that prayer, that prayer to bring light, to enrich
our minds, to bring wisdom and instruction. May this message
go deep into the hearts of your people who were
here and those who have joined us through technology, And
may we be conscious of how we interpret things, lead us,

(20:46):
guide us in our relationships, in our work, in our ministry,
so that we can bring great glory to you in
everything that we do. We ask you and we thank
you in Jesus's precious name. Amen. Amen.
