We hope and pray for God to speak to you
today as you seek to live your life all in

(00:22):
for Jesus Christ. And now from First Baptist Church in Cleveland, Tennessee,
here's Pastor Jordan Easley.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Early one Friday morning, a husband was getting ready for work,
and as he was preparing to leave the house, he
looked over at his wife. She had a big smile
on her face. You could tell that she was excited as.

Speaker 3 (00:41):
It was happening.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
She looked at him and she said, honey, aren't you
excited about today? I bet you don't even know what
today is. And her husband, who was notorious for forgetting
special days and special moments.

Speaker 3 (00:52):
He smiled back to her in that.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Setting and he said, sweetheart, how could I ever forget
what today is? Today is a very special day for us.
And then he quickly made his way out the door.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
Because he had no clue what she was talking about.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
I mean, he was in a mental fog all day long.
He went to work, couldn't get anything done because he
kept trying to figure out, Man, what is it today?
What's so special about today? Is it our anniversary?

Speaker 3 (01:18):
He checked his calendar. It wasn't.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Is it her birthday? Checked the calendar once again, it wasn't.
He knew that it was a special day because she
told him, but he couldn't figure out why. As the
day went on, this guy he became more and more nervous.
He didn't want to show up at the house empty handed,
and so he started thinking, how can I at least
be prepared?

Speaker 3 (01:38):
So he devised a plan.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
On the way home, he stopped by a florist and
he bought the most expensive display of flowers that he
could afford. He also called on the way home, made
a reservation at the fanciest restaurant in town, dinner for two.
At seven o'clock the next day, there was a Broadway.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
Musical that was going to be in town.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
He got two tickets for the next day. He said,
this is going to be in a incredible, incredible experience.
He walked into the house, gave his wife a kiss
on the cheek, and as he was doing that, he
rushed in and he said, Hey, I want you to
put on your best dress because tonight we're going out
to celebrate. We're gonna have an unforgettable night on the
town and it's going to be continued tomorrow. On the

(02:18):
way home, his wife leans over after this incredible evening
and she said, honey, Wow, what a spectacular evening.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
You made me feel so special.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
This was a memorable night, one that that I may
never forget. And it was I mean, it was also
a very expensive night, cost him over five hundred dollars
for all of these things together to celebrate a day
that he didn't even know why they were celebrating, but
he finally figured it out when she let him know.
She put her head on his shoulder and after this

(02:51):
incredible evening, she just looked over him, locked eyes with him,
and said, honey.

Speaker 3 (02:56):
Best Groundhog Day ever.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
We all know as we enter into this place, today
is not Groundhog's Day.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
Today is Mother's Day.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
It's a day where we set aside to honor the
women who have given us life, who have given us love,
and who have also given us a lifetime supply of
embarrassing childhood photos. Can I get an amen from somebody?

Speaker 3 (03:21):
Listen.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
When I was a little boy, I was taught you've
got to give credit where credit is due, and so
I'm quick to admit that one of the primary reasons
I'm even standing here today is the fact that God
blessed me with an incredible mother. And if you had
an incredible mother, you know how important that is. This
is my mom, and when I was a little guy,
she actually led me to the Lord in that very spot,

(03:44):
we were sitting on a park bench in Gloriata, New Mexico.
And so for that moment, the moment that changed the
entire trajectory of my life, I'll be forever grateful my.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
Mom got to do that. My mom is also the one.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
That made sure I was in church every single time
the doors were open.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
She never wavered in teaching me God's word.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
She was also the one that taught me how to
load a dishwasher. She taught me how to make my
best She taught me how to brush my teeth. She
told me to use a napkin instead of my sleeve
when I was wiping my mouth.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
Anybody else have a mom like that. That's a good mom, right.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
The Bible gives us all kinds of examples of good
moms and really godly mothers.

Speaker 3 (04:25):
You know, Hannah prayed for Samuel. She was the one
that committed him to the Lord.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
Mary was the mother of Jesus and raised him as
a boy. Jacobed was the mother of Moses. She was
the one that hid him by faith and then launched
him down the Nile River.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
In a basket.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
You got Eunus, who was the mother of Timothy, taught
him the word of God. When you study this Bible,
the Bible gives us all sorts of examples of women
who were great mothers, and when you light them all up,
you quickly discover that each of them shared one common characteristic.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
They were what I want to call and really what
the Bible calls home builders. They were homebuilders.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
Proverbs fourteen one says, every wise woman builds her house,
but a foolish.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
One tears it down with their own hands.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
When Solomon uses the word house in this verse, he's
not talking about the building that you live in. He's
talking about the family you belong to. And he says
in this word that some women build up their home like.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
The women I mentioned just a second ago.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
They make their homes better, they build up their family.
But on the flip side of that, Solomon also points
out that not all women are home builders, not all
moms are good moms, not all wives are considered great wives.
Why well, he says, because not all women are wise.

(05:55):
It's important to note that when Solomon uses these words
wise and fools elish throughout the Book of Proverbs, he
does so to describe two things, those who follow God
and those.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
Who reject God.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
So, in other words, Solomon was saying in Proverbs fourteen,
verse one, a woman who follows God is a woman
who builds her house, But a woman who rejects God
is a woman who tears it down. See the Bible
calls a wife and a mother the manager of her
household on several occasions. In fact, in Proverbs thirty one

(06:32):
twenty seven, it says she watches over the activities of
her household.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
And is never idle.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
Some of you, ladies can't remember the last time you
were idle, and according to the Bible.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
That was by design.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
God says, you are the day to day manager of
your house, and Solomon reminds us the way that you
manage your family in the present, it will have many
implications for your family in the future. He says, you
will either lead with godly wisdom and be a woman
that builds your house, or he says, you will lead

(07:05):
with a lack of godly wisdom and essentially tear your
house down. In other words, every single mother gets to
decide am I going to be a.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
Homemaker or am I going to be a homebreaker?

Speaker 2 (07:18):
That term homemaker in our society it just seems to
get a bad rap.

Speaker 3 (07:22):
Have you noticed that it's like homemaker? Really?

Speaker 2 (07:26):
I remember one time when our kids were small, Ouder
and I were filling out some form. I don't remember
what it was for, but all of us have done
this before. You fell out your name and your address
and your phone number and ask you for all this information.
And on this particular form, there was one little part.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
Where you had to list your occupation.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Now, my son was watching when he was a little
guy as Otter was filling out this form, and when
she got down to that part where she had to
list her occupation.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
She wrote down the word homemaker because she was staying
home with our kids at the time.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
Well, as soon as he wrote down the word homemaker,
my son looked her in the eyes and made what
I believe to be one of the greatest mistakes of
his entire life. He opened up his mouth and he said, Mom,
when are you gonna.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
Get a real job? Right? I don't know my thoughts exactly.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
We still call that the day Asher got written out
of the will.

Speaker 3 (08:21):
Amen, he's gone, he's out.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
But listen, I can't think of a more real job.
I can't think of a more real job than being
a mother. And not only is it a.

Speaker 3 (08:31):
Real job, it's a difficult job. It's an important job.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
It's a job that has oftentimes overlooked and is oftentimes underappreciated.
I read an article the other day on salary dot
com that was entitled how much is.

Speaker 3 (08:47):
A Mom Really Worth?

Speaker 2 (08:49):
And of course I had to read this article preparing
for this day, and as I read it was basically
breaking down a survey of nineteen thousand moms.

Speaker 3 (08:59):
They asked nineteen.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
Thousand moms a series of questions and talked about what
it was that they really did for their families. It
lists all of these responsibilities in the home and outside
the home.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
I'll give you a couple of them.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
Housekeeper, chief financial officer, laundry manager, uber driver, anybody so
far hello, It goes on, teacher, facilities manager, event planner,
kitchen manager, chef, nurse server, interior designer, conflict.

Speaker 3 (09:27):
Manager, and the list goes on. You get the picture.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
But the article talks says that every single mom, when
you look at all of them across the spectrum, when
they were interviewed, they broke down what they did for
the family, and on average, a mom spends one hundred
and seven hours every single week doing their job.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
One hundred and seven hours a week.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
If you want to break that down, guys, that's fifteen
hours a day, seven days a week.

Speaker 3 (09:56):
And if you're wondering what that job is.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
Worth today, this article goes on to describe the job
of mom and then give a monetary value of what
that's worth. And you know what the monetary value was,
one hundred and eighty four thousand, eight hundred and twenty
dollars a year. All the moms need to lean in.
I'm gonna say it one more time. One hundred and
eighty four grand a year.

Speaker 3 (10:16):
Ladies. Now, I don't have a clue who's paying that,
but I'll tell you this.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
I believe that a good mom is worth every penny
and all. The guy said, amen, Yeah, don't miss that opportunity,
boys are there's nothing in your home that has a
greater value than a good godly mother that builds up
per house.

Speaker 3 (10:36):
Nothing in your home.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
God says that good mothers are homemakers, not homebreakers. They're homemakers,
and homemakers is not a derogatory term. It's a biblical term.
When you hear about a homemaker, that's not exclusively referring
to stay at home mom's. It doesn't mean that a
woman can't work outside of the home. But what it
does mean is that, according to God's design, you a woman,

(11:01):
and you as a mother, have responsibilities in your home
and to your family. And the Lord tells us very
clearly that how you live your life today, with either
wisdom or a lack of wisdom, will determine the future
of your house tomorrow. You can be a homebreaker, or
you can be a homemaker. And the Lord shows us
in his word how a woman can walk in wisdom

(11:23):
and be a woman who builds her house. Proverbs thirty one,
verse ten asked this question, who can find a wife
of noble character is saying, who can find a wife
of noble character? She is far more precious than jewls.
So the question is what does that kind of woman
look like? What is a wife or a woman of

(11:44):
noble character? What is a mother that has noble character?
A homemaker that builds her house and is more precious
than jewles. We're going to spend the remainder of our
time together unpacking the text in Proverbs thirty one, and
from this text I was able to identify ten key characteristics.

Speaker 3 (12:03):
Do I identify what this woman looks like?

Speaker 2 (12:06):
And so even if you're not a note taker, I
encourage you to be a note taker today.

Speaker 3 (12:10):
As we walk through this text.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
Quickly defining a noble woman who is a home builder.

Speaker 3 (12:17):
Beginning of verse eleven, we're going to learn that she is.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
Trustworthy and dependable. Trustworthy and dependable. Verse eleven says the
heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will
not lack anything good.

Speaker 3 (12:30):
You know, I noticed this week that a big part
of the word mothers is others.

Speaker 2 (12:35):
Which makes sense when you think about a great mom,
because mothers seem to live their lives always thinking about
other people.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
And you know, Proverbs thirty one wife and mother.

Speaker 2 (12:46):
The Bible says this is one who is trusted and
one who is dependable, And I believe that that's true
because they are constantly thinking about the needs of other people.

Speaker 3 (12:55):
The second thing we.

Speaker 2 (12:56):
Can learn is that she rewards her husband with good
an audio, verse twelve says she rewards him with good,
not evil, all the days of her life. Several of
the previous proverbs, if you read them, they talk about
the bad effects of a bad wife, and really they
describe how an unwise woman tears down her house because
she's not necessarily.

Speaker 3 (13:17):
Following the lord.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
But this says that a noble woman blesses her husband
all the days of her life. The third thing is
that she is a hard worker. We see that consistently
through this chapter. Verse thirteen says she selects wool and
flax and works with willing hands. This verse focuses on
an important characteristic of a godly woman. It says that

(13:42):
she knows how to seek things and how to find
things that are necessary for her family and for her home.
You know, two thousand years ago, this was a really
tough part of being.

Speaker 3 (13:56):
A mom, a wife.

Speaker 2 (13:58):
It was a tough part of the job because a
woman would have to travel long distances to the market
just to get necessary things for her family.

Speaker 3 (14:06):
Supplies that they couldn't live without.

Speaker 2 (14:09):
That it's still a hard job, don't get me wrong,
But when this was written, there was no Amazon Brime,
there were no Walmart clicklist. I mean, these ladies were
having to hustle all over the place just to keep
her family alive. Verse fourteen says, she is like the
merchant ships bringing her food from far away. You know
King Lamuel who wrote this poem now known as Proverbs

(14:32):
thirty one, he pointed out the importance of this characteristic
and I think he did so because he knew if
the wife didn't work hard, the family would suffer.

Speaker 3 (14:42):
And really, if she dropped the ball.

Speaker 2 (14:44):
In this area and she didn't do this part of
the job which was required, a family truly couldn't survive.
So when he said that a woman is she works
with willing hands, what that means is she wasn't too
proud to work with her hands.

Speaker 3 (14:59):
She didn't act.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
It's like hard work was beneath her. She understood that
it was a part of her role in the family.
A noble wife and mother is a hard worker. The
fourth thing he points out is that she avoids being lazy.
She avoids being lazy Verse fifteen. She rises while it
is still night and provides food for her household and

(15:20):
portions for her female servants.

Speaker 3 (15:22):
So you've got this picture of a noble wife, and yes.

Speaker 2 (15:26):
She's a hard worker, but she's not lazy. She doesn't
give into those lazy tendencies. Many times when preachers preach
this text, they leave out the part about the woman
that's providing portions of food for her female servants because
that doesn't necessarily apply to us today. But I think
that part of the verse is actually pretty important when
you think about it. It shows us that she is

(15:48):
not only a hard worker, and not only is she
a woman that takes care of her family. But this
says a noble woman is compassionate and she cares for
other people, people beyond her, immediately a key characteristic when
you look at the character of a noble wife and mother.
The fifth thing is that she's a good steward with
what she has. Verse sixteen says she evaluates a field

(16:10):
and buys it.

Speaker 3 (16:11):
She plants a vineyard with her earnings.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
So a noble woman is a woman who is forward thinking,
combining her creativity with hard work. That says that she
thoughtfully considers opportunities and she makes decisions that she believes
will better her family and set her family up for success.

Speaker 3 (16:30):
The sixth thing is that she's strong. Get this.

Speaker 2 (16:33):
In verse seventeen, she draws on her strength and reveals
that her arms are strong.

Speaker 3 (16:40):
Now, when you read.

Speaker 2 (16:41):
This part of the text and it says that she
reveals that her arms are strong, try not to picture
your mom like flexing in the mirror. This isn't saying
that a good mom will take you to the gun
show and have guns like none other. That's not what
it's saying. This is saying that a good mother takes
care of herself. She takes care of her own health
and her own strength. But then it really focuses on

(17:03):
her using the strength that God has given her for
productive purposes to fulfill her role.

Speaker 3 (17:09):
In responsibilities within the family. Bible goes on to say
that she's diligent. She's diligent.

Speaker 2 (17:15):
In verse eighteen, she sees that her profits are good
and her lamp never goes out at night. She extends
her hands to the spinning staff, and her hands hold
the spindle.

Speaker 3 (17:26):
This says, a noble woman knows how to use the.

Speaker 2 (17:28):
Tools and technologies that are available to manage her household.

Speaker 3 (17:33):
Well.

Speaker 2 (17:34):
It talks about the lamp and that text, which is
something that we don't use a lot, but a lamp
in that day was like electricity in our day.

Speaker 3 (17:41):
The lamp lit up the home.

Speaker 2 (17:43):
It made sure that people could walk around and it
was safe. And her job was to fill that lamp
with oil throughout the night and make sure that it
always stayed lit.

Speaker 3 (17:55):
The spinning staff that that was talking about, it was
a spindle that was used to spin one and flax.

Speaker 2 (18:02):
It was a tool in that day that they used
to provide clothing for the people in their family.

Speaker 3 (18:09):
It goes on to talk about this number eight. She's generous,
you know.

Speaker 2 (18:12):
Ephesians, chapter six, verse twelve says for our struggles not
against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities,
against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil spiritual
forces in the heaven. Listen, if you really want to
protect your kids, you have to remember who the real
enemy is. You have to remember who the real enemy is.
You can't fight the wrong enemy and expect for a

(18:33):
great result. The real enemy is listed in the book,
and we've got to do everything we can do to
point our kids to the Lord because he is the
real protector. So if you're truly committed to this, I
believe number one, it will change your perspective as a parent.

Speaker 3 (18:49):
If you're committed to protecting your kids, it'll change your perspective.

Speaker 2 (18:52):
But not only will it change your perspective, it should
also change your priorities as a parent. If I'm committed
to protecting my kids, we are committed to protecting our
kids from the powers of the darkness, from the evil
spiritual forces that are attacking them every single day in person, online,
and all of the environments that they find themselves in.

(19:13):
If we're committed to that, then we shouldn't not We
should never have to ask the question, should we go
to church today? Should we prioritize shirts this summer? I mean,
we're traveling and doing a lot.

Speaker 3 (19:23):
Should we do it? I mean that's a no brainer.

Speaker 2 (19:26):
I don't have to choose between going to church camp
or going to sports camp. Now, when you recognize who
the real enemy is and what he's trying to do
to your kids, then these things shouldn't be up for discussion. Listen,
moms and dads, We've got one shot at this, one shot.

Speaker 3 (19:43):
And let me tell you, the time flies as parents.

Speaker 2 (19:47):
And the devil wants to convince you in this moment
that disregarding the things of God and prioritizing the things
of this world, it's all good. That's the formula for success.
That's the American and that's okay. And your kids are
going to turn.

Speaker 3 (20:02):
Out just fine. Just do what everybody else is doing.

Speaker 2 (20:04):
Let me tell you what God says, be wise, be wise,
because you're not raising your kids, you're raising God's kids.
A wise homemaker raises God's children as her own. But
let me give you one last thought, and that is
a wise homemaker operates by the power of God. By
the power of God. Let me ask you whose power

(20:26):
are you working on today? You're working off of your
power or His power. See, when you read the text,
you don't have to You don't have the power to build.

Speaker 3 (20:35):
A godly home. You don't. But the good news is
you don't. You don't have to live with that feeling.

Speaker 2 (20:40):
You don't have to live with that pressure today because
the Bible says that God has infinite power and that
he makes his power available to you as a parent.
Look at what the text says and tewod Peter one
verse three. His divine power has given us everything required
for life and godliness. He's given everything required to build

(21:03):
your house. How through his divine power as well as
a parent, I think it's wise to back up and
ask the question, are we tapping into God's power as
we shepherd our kids? Or are we trying to do
this in our own power, in our own strength, our
own wisdom.

Speaker 3 (21:19):
See let me give you one more, one more thing
number ten.

Speaker 2 (21:23):
The final characteristic I want to point out today from
this text, and that is this. A home builder is
one that blesses her family and is blessed by them.

Speaker 3 (21:33):
Look at verse twenty five.

Speaker 2 (21:34):
Strength and honor are her clothing, and she can laugh
at the time to come. Her mouth speaks wisdom, and
loving instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the
activities of her household and is never idle. Her children
rise up and call her blessed. Her husband also praises her, saying,
many women have done noble deeds, but you surpass them all.

(21:57):
Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman
who fears the.

Speaker 3 (22:01):
Lord will be praised.

Speaker 2 (22:04):
Give her the reward of her labor, and let her
works praise her at the city gates. Mom's your job
is hard, but your work is worthwhile. Your calling is
a mom. It really does matter, and it matters, and
it makes a difference, even when that difference is hard
to see on the surface. Listen, when you're a godly mother.

(22:26):
I believe it puts a smile on the face of
God when you go from being a homebreaker to a homemaker.

Speaker 3 (22:32):
I think that that is something that God loves to see.
And the great news.

Speaker 2 (22:37):
Is, no matter where you are in this journey, it's
not too late. It's not too late to become the
homemaker that God wants you to be. You say, when
my kids are long gone, who cares. God's still giving
you influence over the next generation or the generation after that.

Speaker 3 (22:54):
And in the same way that you can do.

Speaker 2 (22:56):
That with the role of mother, you can do that
as a grandmother, spiritual leader, a friend, a mentor. God's
put you in a season where you can influence the
next generation and it gives you characteristics that God will
use for his kingdom and his glory. Now, let me
just tell you, if you're trying to do this in
your own strength and your own power, You'll never be

(23:16):
successful in doing what God's created you to do. But
when you surrender your life to Christ, you go all
in with Him and you yield to Him in your.

Speaker 3 (23:24):
Life, something happens.

Speaker 2 (23:27):
What I did as a young boy on that park
bench many years ago, it changed the trajectory of my
entire life story. And when you have that moment and
you completely surrender to Christ and say, God, I invite
you into my heart to forgive me of my sins,
to change me and make me new. Now give me
the courage to live for you and to follow you
all the days of my life. And you live every

(23:49):
single day with your yes on the table saying, not me,
but you. I can't do this, but I know you can. Man,
God is able to write an incredible script to the
story of your life. If you've never had that moment,
if you've never truly been saved and forgiven, if you've.

Speaker 3 (24:04):
Never been made a child of the King, and you
know today that he.
