Speaker 1 (00:00):
This episode of All In with Pastor Jordan Easley has
been made possible by the generous support of viewers like you.
Welcome to All In with Pastor Jordan Eastley. Today's message
is about to begin, and we invite you to prepare
your heart and mind to hear an inspiring message from
God's Word. We hope and pray for God to speak
to you today as you seek to live your life

(00:21):
all in for Jesus Christ. And Now from First Baptist
Church in Cleveland, Tennessee, here's Pastor Jordan Easley.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Let me begin by just saying that inside of every
single one of us, I believe there are three people
inside of us right now. Number one is the person
I am today. Number two the person I could be
if I let the devil control my life. And number
three the person I could be if I allowed God

(00:52):
to take control of my life. Today, we're going to
be talking about a man in the Bible that I
believe demonstrates for us what it looks like to be
the person we could be if we were just to
surrender our life and allow God to be God over everything.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
That we are.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
I mean, we're going to read about this man today
from First Chronicles, so I hope you have a copy
of God's Word. You know, when you open up your
Bible and start walking through First Chronicles, it doesn't take
you very long before you realize this is not the
easiest part of Scripture to read. In fact, it's kind
of redundant because really, for the first nine chapters, it's

(01:31):
just a long list of names. In fact, you start
flipping through it, there are over five hundred names that
are listed in the first nine chapters of this book,
but halfway through these chapters, forty four names.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
Into chapter four. The author of this book, who many
believe is Ezra.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
By the way, he's going to introduce us to a
man that we're going to be talking about today, a
man named Jabez. In verse nine, it says Jabez was
more honored than his brothers. His mother named him Jabez
and said I gave birth to him in pain. When

(02:11):
I read this name Jabez, originally it sounded kind of cool.
But when I started to lean in and found out
what Jabez really meant, I was like, let's go ahead
and add that name to the list of names that
we won't name our son.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
You know.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
Verse nine tells us his mother named him Jabez and
said I gave birth to him in pain. Well, the
name Jabez in the Hebrew, it literally means he causes pain.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
If you looked up.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
That word Jabez in the Hebrew, it was a jabez
slash pain.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
His name was pain.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
It was a name that was given from a root
word meaning sorrowful or painful, or to grieve.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
And so if you want.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
To dive into who this man was and what we
can learn from him today, the very first thing I
want you to write in your notes is that his
name was a handicap. His name, from the very first
moment he was born was a handicap. Many scholars believe
he was given that name because of the trauma that
was experienced by his mother at the time of childbirth.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
Perhaps he was born breech.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Others suggested Jabez was born with some sort of physical
handicap that would have grieved his mother's heart. But I
want you to see here that either way, if he
was born with a handicap or not, from the very
first moment of Jabez's life, his name, if nothing else,
was a handicap. He was born into a reality where

(03:40):
he inherited a label.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
That label was a stigma from birth, and.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
It was one that he could have very easily adopted
as a defining characteristic of his life. Listen, were you
born with a stigma? Was anyone here born into a
setback in your life?

Speaker 3 (04:00):
If you say, man, I know what that feels like.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
I was born at a time where I wasn't like
everybody else, or from the time I was born, I
wasn't very smart, I didn't have the best personality or
I didn't I wasn't born on the right side of
the tracks. I didn't I wasn't born into the greatest
family situation. I think there's a lot of us that
could say, you know what, when I was born, I

(04:23):
was born with a certain stigma or with a certain setback,
And yet Jabez was in the exact same spot. He
was a man that lived his life with a setback
for minute one, and yet he lived in such a
way this that I may not be qualified, i may
not have the greatest gifts or abilities, but I'm going

(04:44):
to take what I do have and I'm going to
live in such a way that makes a difference. And
I think that's my favorite part about this man, Jabees.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
He started out with a handicap.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
He started out with a setback, but he didn't get
stuck in his setback.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
Does that make sense? So we can know that about
him right here in verse nine.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
His name was a handicap. You said, what else can
we learn from verse nine?

Speaker 3 (05:09):
Keep going? His life was honored.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
That's what it says here in verse nine, Jabez was
more honored than his brothers.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
The Bible tells us that Jabez lived his life well
and was more honored than others.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
That word honored in the Hebrew was a word that
meant numerous, or prosperous or rich.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
When you look that word up, that's what it means.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
It expressed extreme blessings from God. In fact, when you
look up that word honored, it actually has a double meaning.
On one hand, it means numerous or prosperous or rich,
but on the other hand, it literally means to be heavy.
So when the writer used this word honored, saying he

(05:54):
was more honored than his brothers, he was actually painting
a picture of God blessing Jabez beyond.

Speaker 3 (06:01):
Just normal blessings. Does that make sense? He was heavily blessed.
He was weighed down with the blessings of God. If
you get that shake your head. I want to make
sure we're tracking here. Listen, this is a picture.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Of God loading Jabez down with his greatest, God sized blessings.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
So what do we know about j Bez? So far?
You keep in track. His name was a handicap and
his life was honored. Well, let me share with you
one more thing that we can know about.

Speaker 2 (06:33):
This man Jabez. We know that his desire was to
be maximized. He wanted to live his life in such
a way where he was maximized on the Earth. When
you think about a life that was maximized or a
life that is maximized, what picture pops into your mind?

Speaker 3 (06:51):
Now?

Speaker 2 (06:51):
I thought about that this week, and I had several
people that popped into my mind. But at the end
of the day, the one person that stood above all
the rest was a man you know as Benjamin Franklin.
I know that sounds random, but when you start to
read about this man, when you start to study what
he accomplished in this life, there are very few people

(07:13):
that have lived on planet Earth and at the end
of their life can say I did more than that guy.
Most people don't even realize Benjamin Franklin only had two
years of formal education.

Speaker 3 (07:23):
Two years and yet here are a few things that
he accomplished.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
When he was twenty five years old, he founded the
first library in America twenty five years old. When he
was thirty one years old, he started the first fire
department in the United States.

Speaker 3 (07:39):
At age thirty six, he invented the lightning rod.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
At age forty, he learned how to harness electricity and.

Speaker 3 (07:46):
How to use it.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
At age forty three, he designed the heating stove that
many of us still have in our homes. At age
forty five, he founded one of our Ivy League universities,
and then all the way up to seventy nine years old.
At seventy nine, he invented bifocals. I mean, this was
a guy, right, You're like, praise God for bifocals. Amen,

(08:09):
this is a guy who was seriously. He was a
renowned conversationalist. He was an economist. He was a philosopher.
He was a diplomat. He was a printer, a publisher.
The guy was a linguist. He spoke and wrote five
different languages. Benjamin Franklin was a man that never stopped discovering,

(08:30):
He never stopped producing. He never stopped inventing all the
way up to the day he died at the age
of eighty four. He literally lived the mantra of being maximized.
In fact, he was the one that once said, do
you love life, then don't waste time, because time is life.

(08:53):
When I think about Jabez, I think you know what
that defines his life. Zbez didn't want to waste time.
He wanted to maximize every second that God would give
him on this earth.

Speaker 3 (09:08):
And he also realized that.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
He couldn't achieve his maximum potential in his own strength
or by his own power.

Speaker 3 (09:16):
He knew the only way for him to be maximized
was through the power of prayer. So what did Jabez do?
He prayed?

Speaker 2 (09:25):
Look at verse ten, Jabez called out to the God
of Israel, if only you would bless me extend my border,
let your hand be with me and keep me from harm,
so that I will not experience pain. Because in the
fuel that drives a life to becoming maximized for God

(09:47):
is the power of prayer. And so believing that Jabez
prayed and God responded to the prayer. If you were
to summarize the life of Jabez and really.

Speaker 3 (09:58):
His story here on planet Earth. You could do it
very simply. A simple outline of his life would be
this number one.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
His life started out badly. Number two he prayed a
powerful prayer, and number three, God blessed him supernaturally. That's
a pretty simple outline, but that's the story that we read. See,
Jabez was blessed because he had the courage to ask,
he had the.

Speaker 3 (10:23):
Faith to ask. He knew that God is the source.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
Of blessings, He is the one that distributes blessings, and
that he himself could not bless his own life. Well,
when I think about the life of Jabez, he was
a man that realized that in order for me to
be maximized, my humanity must be minimized.

Speaker 3 (10:44):
He understood that he was not the source.

Speaker 2 (10:46):
Of blessings that God was, and so he looked at
himself and he said, I need to be minimized so
that God can be maximized. You see, our humanity prevents
us from being maximized many times because because it's our
flesh that prevents us from experiencing the supernatural. See, our
humanity is what makes us believe that we can do

(11:08):
this without God.

Speaker 3 (11:10):
Your flesh will tell you that.

Speaker 2 (11:12):
Our humanity is what prevents us from walking by faith.
Our humanity is what keeps us from asking God to
bless us. Our humanity is what leads us to settle
for less than God's best in certain areas of our
life and our relationships.

Speaker 3 (11:28):
Jabez wasn't willing to settle, but instead.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
When you look at this man, he was driven by
a desire to live beyond his limits.

Speaker 3 (11:36):
You see it. He wanted more, He wanted God's best.
So what did he do? He asked the.

Speaker 2 (11:43):
Lord to bless him and realize this request for God's blessing.
It wasn't intended to make his name greater. It was
intended to make God's name greater. He was saying, Lord,
bless me, not from me, bless me for you. Therefore,
we should be driven by a desire to live beyond

(12:04):
our limits. But if you have that desire, it shouldn't
be for your glory.

Speaker 3 (12:09):
It should be for God's glory.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
That's why Jabez not only prayed God bless me, but
when you go on, you see he also prayed, God,
extend my border. Do you see that in the text
extend my border. He's not saying God, I could really
use a bigger farm.

Speaker 3 (12:25):
God, I could really use some more cattle, or God,
I wish my ranch was a little bit bigger, my
boat was a little bit bigger.

Speaker 2 (12:32):
That's not what he saying. He's saying, Lord, extend my border.
He's saying, God, give me more territory.

Speaker 3 (12:37):
Expand my influence.

Speaker 2 (12:39):
He's saying, enlarge my life so that I can make
a greater impact for you.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
Extend my border.

Speaker 2 (12:47):
A few weeks ago, we were in Jerusalem and we
were walking around the ancient city streets in the Jewish Quarter.
And as we were walking the streets, I noticed that
there were several juice along the way.

Speaker 3 (13:02):
There was one that caught my eye.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
There were two young men I'm probably thirteen fourteen years
old that were working this juice stand, and they had
all kinds.

Speaker 3 (13:08):
Of different fruits.

Speaker 2 (13:10):
But I washed as one of them grabbed an orange
and they cut the orange in half. They got a glass,
and as they cut the orange in half, he took
half in this hand and half in this hand, and
he started to.

Speaker 3 (13:21):
Squeeze a little juice here, and squeeze a little juice here.

Speaker 2 (13:24):
And do it again, and do it again until there
was about half It was about half full of orange juice.
Then he had to grab a second orange, and he
cut it in half, and he put half in this
hand and half in this hand, and he gave it
a little squeeze here and a little squeeze here, until
the glass was full. I was just like, oh, you
don't see that every day. I just caught my attention.

Speaker 3 (13:42):
I went on with shopping and doing the things.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
I came back and there was another juice stand where
they weren't hand squeezing, but they had a machine that
was squeezing the fruit. And so I saw as this
man grabbed an orange and he cut the orange in half,
and instead of squeezing it, he placed this orange machine
and he pressed the orange like I've never seen anything pressed.

Speaker 3 (14:03):
I mean, there was no juice left, there was no
pulp left.

Speaker 2 (14:06):
It was nothing but a very very thin piece of
orange peel. And then I looked at the cup, which
was the exact same cup as the other stand was using.
And yet after just one orange, that entire cup was
filled to the brim.

Speaker 3 (14:21):
And as I watched that, I thought to myself, Man.

Speaker 2 (14:23):
What a great picture of how each one of us
should approach our time here on planet Earth.

Speaker 3 (14:29):
I thought, Man, That's the way I want to live
my life.

Speaker 2 (14:32):
Not where God gets a little squeeze here and a
little squeeze here, and every once in a while he'll
get a little bit more out of me and a
little bit more out of me. But no, I want
to live in such a way where where God can
squeeze my life and ultimately use every single drop of
potential that I have to offer for His kingdom and
his glory.

Speaker 3 (14:49):
While I'm here on planet Earth.

Speaker 2 (14:51):
Listen, God's power is around us every single day, but
it's way different when God's power is in us and
when God's powers working through us.

Speaker 3 (15:03):
And that's what Jabez was praying for.

Speaker 2 (15:05):
He's saying, God, bless me, yes, God, extend my territory. Yes,
But God, keep your hand on me, keep your power
working in me and working through me. And lastly, ja
Bez says, to the Lord, and keep me from harm.
When you see that word harm, I want you to
write out to the side of the word evil, to

(15:26):
the same word. After studying the devil and how he
works and how he thinks for a lot of years,
I've learned to kind of map out his tactics and
his tendencies and you've probably learned the same thing about
the devil that I've learned, and that is, the devil
loves to surround us with the things that we tend

(15:48):
to struggle with the most. Anybody shake her head at that.
He loves to surround us with the things that we
struggle with the most.

Speaker 3 (15:58):
He knows you, right, He knows how you work, how
you think.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
He knows what kind of bait you tend to bite,
and because of that, he gives you every opportunity to
fail and to fall. For instance, if the devil knows
you have this certain sin, he's going to entice you
to dive in and to give into that sin. Here's
how James puts it. In James one, he said, but

(16:22):
each person is tempted when he is drawn away and
enticed by his own evil desire.

Speaker 3 (16:29):
Did you see that his own evil desire?

Speaker 2 (16:32):
Your evil desire, The thing that entices you may be
different than the person next to you, But that's what
he's saying here. He's saying that when each person is tempted,
he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desire.
And then verse fifteen says, then after desire has conceived,
it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown,
it gives birth to death. So the devil knows I

(16:55):
can surround you with things you struggle with, and he
sees it as his job.

Speaker 3 (17:00):
His job is to get you to trip up into sin.

Speaker 2 (17:04):
So, in other words, if you say, man, my struggle
is sexual, sin or lush, you know what, you better
believe the devil's gonna put you. He's going to put
an unlocked, unmonitored smartphone in your hand. He's going to
He's going to put you in an environment where there
are things you shouldn't be looking at. He's going to
put you around people that you shouldn't be talking to.

(17:26):
If he knows that that's your struggle, he makes it
his mission to entice you into sin. If he knows
that your struggle is is gossip. Man, you don't think
the devil knows that he knows it, you better believe
the Devil's going to surround you with big mouth, small minded,
insecure people that have nothing better to do than talk

(17:46):
about everybody else's business. You think those people just showed
up coincidentally. Now the devil placed those people in your life.
He knows how to trip you up. And if that
is your struggle. He's made it his mission. It is
job to entice you to sin. Are you asking God
to keep you from evil?

Speaker 3 (18:07):
Yes? Or no?

Speaker 2 (18:10):
If you're not praying that every single day, MA ask
you a personal question.

Speaker 3 (18:15):
Why not?

Speaker 2 (18:17):
Why wouldn't we pray these prayers? Let me tell you
why most Christians aren't praying.

Speaker 3 (18:24):
These prayers today.

Speaker 2 (18:26):
It's because somewhere down the line, we chose to believe.

Speaker 3 (18:31):
The devil's lies. We've chosen to believe that.

Speaker 2 (18:36):
The whispers of the devil that say God's not answering
that prayer, He's not listening to you. You're you're praying
for somebody else. They're too far gone. God can't do more.
God won't do more. You don't deserve greater blessings in
your life. You're not worthy of the favor of God.
You can't handle more territory. If God blessed you a territory,

(18:57):
what in the world would you do with it? We've
heard those over and over again. And what happens is
when we believe lies, over time, we're going to choose
not to walk by faith or believe God for more.

Speaker 3 (19:12):
We're not going to be willing to pursue God's very best.
What happens.

Speaker 2 (19:17):
We become satisfied with something far less right satisfied. As
Jabez prayed this prayer, he was essentially telling God, I
refuse to settle for less than your best.

Speaker 3 (19:32):
I want you to hear those words. I refuse to
settle for less than your best. That's what he told
the Lord.

Speaker 2 (19:41):
The question is can we say the same thing today?
Are you refusing to settle for less than God's best?
Or have you become satisfied with what you have? Listen,
the reason so few people are maximized.

Speaker 3 (20:00):
Is because so many of us are satisfied. Don't miss
this today.

Speaker 2 (20:04):
The reason so few of us are maximized, this is
because so many of us are satisfied.

Speaker 3 (20:12):
Satisfied. Christians are rarely maximized.

Speaker 2 (20:17):
And I say that because we tend to live in
a land of mediocrity.

Speaker 3 (20:21):
We live in a land of passivity and apathy.

Speaker 2 (20:25):
If we're satisfied, then most likely we're not walking by faith.
We're not pursuing God's best, but instead we're choosing to
simply exist.

Speaker 3 (20:35):
We're cool with what we have, and so we're just
running out the clock.

Speaker 2 (20:38):
And enjoying what we've received. So don't be a satisfied Christian.
Don't be a satisfied Christian. A satisfied Christian is a
partially engaged believer, not somebody who's all in walking with
God and loving God and pursuing God's best.

Speaker 3 (20:56):
Satisfied believers, Okay.

Speaker 2 (20:57):
We're just attending church here and there whenever it's convenient,
whenever the weather's right. A satisfied Christian is one that's like,
you know what, I'm okay with living for the Lord
on Sunday, but I'm okay with living.

Speaker 3 (21:08):
For the without the Lord the rest of the week.
A satisfied believer is a person who says, you know what,
I'm going to.

Speaker 2 (21:14):
Give what I want to give, and I'm gonna do
what I want to do, and I'm gonna show up
when I want to show up, and I'm going to live.

Speaker 3 (21:19):
By my rules and not his.

Speaker 2 (21:22):
You rarely see satisfied Christians that are praying, like really praying.
You rarely see satisfied Christians that are serving, really serving,
or working or witnessing or sacrificing for the Lord.

Speaker 3 (21:36):
Why because they're satisfied. I'm satisfied with where I am spiritually.
I'm satisfied with what I've received.

Speaker 2 (21:44):
But you know what, when it all comes down to it,
satisfied Christians are the ones that are leaving blessings in
the barn. You think about that God has intended all
of these blessings. But when we're satisfied, we don't pursue
in more. We don't pursue anything better. You know what,
This is my marriage, It is what it is. This

(22:05):
is my walk with the Lord. At least I'm not
going to help. Well, that's just the way that I talk.
It's just the company I keep. I'm okay with doing
what I do, even though.

Speaker 3 (22:13):
That it's sinful.

Speaker 2 (22:14):
I choose to look the other way. Listen, stop being satisfied.
God doesn't want you to be a satisfied Christian.

Speaker 3 (22:21):
He wants to bless you. He wants to empower you.
He wants to use you to build his kingdom. God
wants you to live your life as a living sacrifice.
He wants you to strive for more. He wants you
to long to be faithful to him. He's a good dad.

Speaker 2 (22:38):
Have you ever been a dad and you've got kids
that are totally off the rails?

Speaker 3 (22:42):
You're like, why would I bless that? You're crazy? I
feel like that's the way we are.

Speaker 2 (22:47):
Sometimes we're like, I'm just going to be like the
stubborn kid who feels entitled to more from Dad, but
we do nothing to obey him. God doesn't want you
to be a satisfied Christian. He doesn't want us to
be a satisfied church. He wants to bless his church.
He wants to empower his church. He wants to use
his church to fulfill the great commission.

Speaker 3 (23:06):
God wants our church, in every church, to go for
it for the Kingdom of God. He wants us to
walk by faith.

Speaker 2 (23:12):
He wants you to trust him today. He wants us
to be wholly devoted followers of Jesus Christ. But the
only thing that's going to move us from satisfaction to
expectation is a change of heart and the power of prayer.
Prayer change the life of Jabez, and I believe prayer

(23:37):
can change your life as well. Throughout this whole text
the series, we're going to see that prayer is the hand.

Speaker 3 (23:45):
That moves the heart of God. Prayer is the hand
that moves the heart of God.

Speaker 2 (23:49):
Jabez prayed, God, bless me, God, extend my border. God,
keep your hand on me. God, keep me from evil.
My question for you is this, you commit to praying
the same The Bible says that God heard the prayer of.

Speaker 3 (24:05):
Jabez and he granted his request.

Speaker 2 (24:08):
And in the same way, I want to pray and
believe that God will do the same in my life.
When James says you do not have because you do
not ask, I want to make sure that that doesn't
apply to me.

Speaker 3 (24:20):
Hey, what is the ask that is so big? You've
been scared to ask?

Speaker 2 (24:25):
What is the one thing that you've You've put on
the back burner and say, you know what, I'm not
even going to bother the.

Speaker 3 (24:30):
Lord with this. This is too big.

Speaker 2 (24:31):
This is out of his hands. What's the thing that
you asked for a long time ago? And because God
didn't give you the answer you're looking for, you said,
I'm done asking. You ever thought maybe your timing is
a little different than his. Let's be people that ask
of God.

Speaker 3 (24:45):
Let's be people that believe in God. May we believe
that he not only hears us, but that he responds
to us, and that he will bless us according to
his will.

Speaker 2 (24:56):
There is power in prayer if you believe that. Say, man,
