Join me on a trip to Discovery Mountain, where the
air is clear, clear enough to hear your imagination, and
where every day is an exercise in faith. Join me
for today's expedition. Our last episode of this story series
(00:53):
called Weathering the Storm will It ended with a loud
rumbling sound, but it wasn't an other roaring jeep arriving
at Discovery Mountain Academy. At least the mud Guy and
the rest of the group gathered didn't think so. The
sound scared them so much that they began to run.
(01:13):
Have you been worried about what it could have been?
I know I have. Whatever caused the loud rumbling, I
hope everybody at the school is safe. Let's head back
to the school and find out how everyone is in
today's episode called Muddy Mess, is everyone okay?
Speaker 5 (01:36):
I'm fine?
Speaker 6 (01:37):
DS?
Speaker 5 (01:38):
What about you Rich?
Speaker 7 (01:40):
I'm fine too?
Speaker 5 (01:41):
What about Stan Well?
Speaker 7 (01:43):
Last I saw he was chasing his dog.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
I think Diesel was more frightened than we were.
Speaker 8 (01:48):
Was all this what Diesel was growling at perhaps animals.
Speaker 5 (01:52):
Wait, where's mister Simon?
Speaker 3 (01:54):
Mister Simon, Oh there is Are you all right? Yes?
All right?
Speaker 9 (02:01):
At least I think I am. It's been a long
time since I've run like that.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
Man. Would you look at that?
Speaker 5 (02:08):
Yeah, it looks really bad.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
A wall of mud.
Speaker 5 (02:12):
The mud must have just slid right down the hill. Wow,
that happened fast.
Speaker 9 (02:18):
How did that happen so quickly?
Speaker 10 (02:20):
Well, that hill already had a lot of erosion due
to snowmelt and all this rain.
Speaker 7 (02:25):
It was a disaster just waiting to happen.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
Oh no, Look at the school wall.
Speaker 5 (02:30):
It's covered in mud. In missus Lewis's room, it's caved in.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
We have to check on everyone.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
I agree with DS. Let's go inside and see if
everyone is okay?
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Is everyone okay? What was that? Oh?
Speaker 5 (02:46):
I think I got hit in the head with something.
Maybe Oh it was a book.
Speaker 7 (02:51):
Did we have an earthquake?
Speaker 5 (02:52):
I don't know, Carson.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
What do we do now?
Speaker 3 (02:55):
We stay calm?
Speaker 5 (02:56):
Brianna, calm?
Speaker 3 (02:58):
How can we stay calm when the room.
Speaker 5 (02:59):
Is shaking, books are jumping off the shelf.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
Guys, guys, look outside, what is it?
Speaker 5 (03:05):
There's mud everywhere.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
I can't believe it.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
The high schoolers are shocked, but doing okay, let's check
on the others.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
Miss Holt, what was that?
Speaker 11 (03:18):
It sounded like a freight train, a freight train going
right through the school.
Speaker 5 (03:23):
A ceiling tile fell on my desk.
Speaker 12 (03:26):
Stay calm, everybody, Yes, stay calm, Chaplin Jake and I
will figure out what happened.
Speaker 5 (03:32):
But Misholt. My desk is covered in plaster. Mine too.
I'm scared.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
I want to call my mom. We're all a little scared, Janet,
But don't worry.
Speaker 7 (03:41):
I won't leave you guys. Look at the playground.
Speaker 8 (03:46):
Oh man, what playground is buried in mud?
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Buried in mud. Let me see Missus Lewis's classroom.
Speaker 5 (03:55):
The wall is caved in.
Speaker 7 (03:57):
Missus Lewis's classroom.
Speaker 13 (03:59):
The tosses in there.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
I want my mom and dad. Everyone take a seat.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
Stay calm, Jake, Jake, you need to stay calm too.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
I gotta help Natasha on the kids.
Speaker 7 (04:14):
Oh, Natasha helped me.
Speaker 14 (04:15):
They're soon.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
Natasha coming, Jake.
Speaker 7 (04:19):
This is lewis classroom.
Speaker 5 (04:20):
Did you see it?
Speaker 1 (04:21):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (04:21):
I know, Onelivia. Natasha's in there.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
DS has help on the way.
Speaker 5 (04:25):
I hear a siren.
Speaker 4 (04:27):
We can't wait, Jake, Natasha, can.
Speaker 15 (04:31):
You hear me?
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Can you hear anything?
Speaker 6 (04:34):
No?
Speaker 4 (04:35):
And I can't get the door open. Let me help,
all right?
Speaker 3 (04:38):
One?
Speaker 1 (04:40):
Two, three, Bush, Oh, bud you.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
Jake, Olivia. What happened? I got a call from Principal
Smith about an emergency. Oh, I'm glad to see you.
Officer Lewis, we need to see Natasha.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
It looks like there was a mud slide in the
playground and the wall caved.
Speaker 16 (04:59):
In my wife's classroom.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
Hannah, Hannah, the fire department's on its way.
Speaker 16 (05:06):
Hang on, Hannah, Hannah's gone.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
What my wife's gone?
Speaker 4 (05:12):
Jake wrong, We're choice.
Speaker 7 (05:13):
Hannah's at the hospital with Henry, waiting for his mom.
He hurt his ankle.
Speaker 4 (05:17):
It's Natasha who's in there? Oh?
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Thank goodness. I mean not that it's good. But let's
get this door down.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
I tried.
Speaker 16 (05:24):
Officers, listen, Number two of you break down this door,
and the rest of you outside to assess the mud damage.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Natasha, Natasa, Yes, Jake, Natasha.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
Natasha seems to be okay. Phew, what about her students?
Though everyone has gathered in the school gym. Let's join them.
Speaker 7 (05:49):
Natasha, are you sure you don't need to sit down.
Speaker 5 (05:53):
I'm fine, Jake, but your asthma.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
You're starting to wheeze.
Speaker 11 (05:56):
It's just the shock the mud slide, realizing what happened,
how close we came to being injured, were worse, I know.
I'm just so glad that everyone is okay.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
I still can't believe it.
Speaker 8 (06:12):
What that a landslide destroyed the wall of missus Lewis's classroom.
Speaker 7 (06:16):
I can believe it.
Speaker 10 (06:17):
I told you that hill was a disaster waiting to happen.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
No, Rich, I can't believe that no one was hurt.
Speaker 5 (06:24):
And praise God that the kids weren't in there.
Speaker 11 (06:27):
Oh, the kids were ringing so unruly, so he decided
to bring them here to the gym. It was just
a spur of the moment decision.
Speaker 8 (06:34):
I think it was a divinely inspired decision.
Speaker 9 (06:37):
You're right, Reader, God really protected you and the kids, Natasha.
Speaker 14 (06:42):
If you had been in that classroom, well, I don't
even want to think about it.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
The whole thing is.
Speaker 9 (06:49):
My fault, your fault. You sent all this rain. No,
I did you send all that snow we had this winter?
Speaker 16 (06:57):
No?
Speaker 14 (06:58):
But I failed to follow through, and Reader suggested we
build drains around the playground or regrade the hillside.
Speaker 5 (07:06):
Now, don't go blaming yourself.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
I'm the principal. The buck stops here with me, Mike.
Speaker 8 (07:12):
I didn't get those things accomplished when I was principal either, but.
Speaker 14 (07:16):
I could have gotten it done, and if I had,
this fiasco never would have happened.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
Hey, I need to talk to you. Uh me, Yes,
what can I do for you, mister Beckman?
Speaker 13 (07:29):
You can explain how this happened. My daughter could have
been hurt.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
Mister Beckman, I can assure all the parents.
Speaker 13 (07:36):
Really, what assurances can you give that nothing like this
will happen again? We have a plan. What precautions are
you taking? And why weren't you prepared for this disaster? Now,
mister Beckman, I'd like to see a copy of this
school's emergency preparedness guidelines.
Speaker 8 (07:51):
Mister Beckman, No one could have predicted how much rain
we were going to.
Speaker 5 (07:54):
Get this spring.
Speaker 13 (07:55):
Emergency preparedness is just that as school superintendent, you should
know that.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
Reader.
Speaker 8 (08:01):
Yes, I'm fully versed in It means being prepared ahead
of time.
Speaker 13 (08:07):
Floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
There's no excuse to not be prepared for one.
Speaker 10 (08:14):
Well, technically, this wasn't a flood, it was a mud slide.
And who are you A short answer, I'm rich and
I'm the mud guy.
Speaker 13 (08:22):
Well, mud guy. What causes mud mud is excess water.
That's what my daughter says. The playground's been flooded for days,
so there's no excuse. I'm going to find Jenet now.
But reader Smith, doctor Smith, Uh huh, we're not through here.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
Oof.
Speaker 7 (08:41):
That's one angry parent.
Speaker 5 (08:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (08:45):
The rest of the parents seem to believed to be
reunited with their kids and that they're okay. They're not
upset yet.
Speaker 14 (08:53):
Beckman's complaints aren't wrong. I could have done more. I
should have done more.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
DS is under a lot of pressure. The school has
suffered major damage, and he's blaming himself for the whole disaster.
He's going to need a lot of help fixing this mess.
But where will that kind of help come from. We'll
learn more after this shortbreak.

Speaker 1 (10:18):
The students, teachers, parents, and police officers are still swirling
around the school gym. They all look a little lost
about what to do next.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
There's heada heada over here.
Speaker 7 (10:32):
I can't believe it, my poor classroom.
Speaker 16 (10:35):
Don't worry about your classroom. Just be thankful you weren't
in it when it happened.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
Yes, and the kids weren't in it either.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
Are they really Okay they are.
Speaker 7 (10:45):
I pray for these kids every morning.
Speaker 9 (10:47):
Thank God, We'll protect them.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
I know, honey. And God heard your prayers and protected them. Yes,
yes he did.
Speaker 12 (11:00):
I'm telling you, mom, this story could be huge. Okay, Well,
come as soon as you can, Brianna, was that your mom?
Speaker 7 (11:09):
Yeah?
Speaker 12 (11:10):
I thought a reporter should be on the scene. We
need to write about this for the Discovery Mountain Gazette.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
But a reporter is already on the scene.
Speaker 3 (11:17):
Oh no, my mom's gonna get scooped. No, silly, it's you.
Speaker 7 (11:22):
You're the reporter.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
Oh yeah, Addison, you're brilliant.
Speaker 12 (11:26):
I better start taking notes and take some pictures too.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
While Brianna plans, so does someone else in the gym.
Speaker 15 (11:36):
John John Harris. Wait up, I have something to talk
to you about.
Speaker 5 (11:42):
Stan, and I hear you saw the whole thing happen.
Speaker 7 (11:45):
Yeah, who scared Diesel hear terribly. But you're okay now right.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
Boy, that's good.
Speaker 15 (11:54):
So the mud guy got this idea, but I told
him we were gonna need your help.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
And as Stan makes plans with John Harris, Cyrus and
Carson have ideas of their own.
Speaker 14 (12:07):
Hey, Carson, let's go take a closer look at missus
Lewis's classroom.
Speaker 7 (12:11):
Uh, you go on, I'll catch up with you later.
Speaker 3 (12:14):
Don't tell me you're scared.
Speaker 7 (12:16):
I'm not going inside it or anything dangerous.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
I just want a better look.
Speaker 7 (12:20):
I'm not scared. I just have a something I gotta
do first. What are you staring at anyway?
Speaker 3 (12:28):
At Stan and Diesel.
Speaker 7 (12:31):
You don't want to get close to the dog. I'm
not convinced it's a dog. It's the size of a
Shetland pony. What's the problem you're afraid of ponies?
Speaker 3 (12:39):
Two?
Speaker 1 (12:42):
And while all these plans s whirl around, the school,
gym DS is still trying to fix it all.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
What a mess.
Speaker 14 (12:51):
I don't even know where to start fixing any of this.
I need to call the insurance company and find a
contractor and get repair estimate.
Speaker 9 (13:00):
And I think you need to send everyone home first.
The kids are too upset to continue with classes today.
Speaker 5 (13:08):
Good point, mister Simon.
Speaker 10 (13:10):
Look, I know I'm an outsider here, but can I
make a recommendation?
Speaker 12 (13:16):
Rich?
Speaker 14 (13:17):
I need all the ideas I can get the upset parent,
mister Beckman, Right, mister Beckman, he can't be the only
parent with questions. Oh yes, Once the shock wears off.
There will be a lot of.
Speaker 10 (13:31):
Questions, and the longer the parents go without solid answers,
the worse the rumors and tempers will get.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
Rich is right, So what should I do?
Speaker 7 (13:43):
Call an assembly? You could do it right here.
Speaker 9 (13:45):
In the gym, everyone's already here.
Speaker 10 (13:48):
Explain exactly what led to the landside and what needs
to be done to prevent future damage. Excellent idea, And
it needs to be someone who can convince the parents
that he knows what he's talking about, has a plan
of action. Someone who can also reassure the kids so
that they don't need to worry about any further disasters.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
I don't know if I'm up to all that right now.
Speaker 5 (14:11):
Dyes, you have an expert right here?
Speaker 7 (14:15):
Rich?
Speaker 14 (14:16):
Oh yeah, Rich, will you talk to everyone me?
Speaker 8 (14:21):
You're the mud guy right well, we've got a whole
lot of mud here.
Speaker 5 (14:26):
But look, Rich, why do you think I called you
in the first place?
Speaker 8 (14:31):
Remember when you found that fossil and it sparked an
epidemic of dinosaur fever. Yeah, but it's all the kids
could talk about. The younger ones were upset with all
the talk about monster lizards and such. But you were
a great teacher. Explaining things and calming everyone down.
Speaker 14 (14:49):
So, Rich, what do you say we need to get
everyone's attention while they're all still here?
Speaker 10 (14:55):
Well, it's your school. Yes, if you want me to help,
I'll help.
Speaker 14 (15:02):
Listen up, everyone, let's gather in front of the stage.
Speaker 3 (15:06):
I have some announcements.
Speaker 1 (15:09):
Parents sat with their kids, and teachers continued their head counts. Slowly,
they all gathered in front of the stage to listen
to DS.
Speaker 14 (15:19):
And so, missus Lewis, you and your students will meet
in the gym for the time being, and Miss Holt's
class you will meet in the cafeteria until we're sure.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
Your classroom is undamaged. Now let's get to what happened today.
I know some of you have questions. I hope you
have some answers.
Speaker 14 (15:39):
I believe I do, mister Beckman, and I have an
expert here who can provide even more. Some of you
here might remember Rich who's also known as the mud Guy.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
Rich, come on up here, the mud Guy Steve.
Speaker 1 (15:55):
Just listen.
Speaker 5 (15:56):
Okay, Oh what guy over here?
Speaker 7 (16:00):
It's me Jake. Remember how could I forget you?
Speaker 9 (16:03):
Jake?
Speaker 14 (16:04):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (16:04):
I still have your mud Guy hat.
Speaker 5 (16:06):
I'll wear it tomorrow.
Speaker 7 (16:08):
And where it proudly. Jake Hugh earned it.
Speaker 10 (16:12):
Well everyone, as you already heard, I'm the mud guy,
and you may have noticed that we have a little
mud around here.
Speaker 7 (16:20):
There's so much mud.
Speaker 10 (16:22):
Yeah, the good news is we have a strategy for
dealing with it. In fact, we were outside making plans
to put in drains and build a retaining wall when
the landslide happened.
Speaker 13 (16:32):
Shouldn't installing drains and a retaining wall have happened before
the landslide.
Speaker 7 (16:38):
To be honest, Yes, but now it's even more urgent.
Mister mudguy, Uh, yes, you there.
Speaker 3 (16:45):
How could you build a wall in the rain?
Speaker 10 (16:48):
Well, it makes things more difficult, not to mention, more
and uncomfortable. But I've worked on archaeological digs in all
kinds of weather and this is no different. Stan, come
on up here and share an update with everyone.
Speaker 15 (17:05):
We've already recruited some volunteers with John Harris's help. We're
ready to start the project right now.
Speaker 19 (17:12):
Yes we are, Stan. I'm setting up some professional worklights
so we can continue even after it's dark and a
little rain. Is it gonna stop us?
Speaker 4 (17:20):
Huh?
Speaker 1 (17:21):
A little rain?
Speaker 7 (17:22):
There's been a lot of rain.
Speaker 12 (17:25):
Excuse me, Rich, Yes, I'm Rihanna from the Discovery Mountain Gazette.
Speaker 7 (17:30):
Oh, what's your question?
Speaker 5 (17:33):
What if it keeps raining, will there be a flood too?
Speaker 10 (17:36):
Well, I haven't looked at the forecasts, but there's always
the risk of flooding.
Speaker 7 (17:42):
But there's no cause for alarm.
Speaker 10 (17:45):
Certainly there won't be a flood of biblical proportions.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
Biblical proportions, what's that supposed to.
Speaker 7 (17:51):
Mean, you know, like Noah's flood?
Speaker 13 (17:53):
No, I don't know. Why don't you enlighten us if
you can.
Speaker 7 (17:59):
It's one of the most amazing stories in the whole Bible.
Speaker 11 (18:02):
See Lily Chaplain Jake was right.
Speaker 5 (18:04):
It is a true story. It can't be true.
Speaker 7 (18:06):
Oh, it's a true story.
Speaker 13 (18:08):
Wait a minute, you mean that fairy tale about a
man saving all the animals in a boat the size
of a bathtub.
Speaker 10 (18:15):
It's not a fairy tale, and the boat was much
bigger than a bathtub.
Speaker 13 (18:19):
What kind of expert are you anyway, mister Beckman.
Speaker 7 (18:23):
I understand where you're coming from.
Speaker 3 (18:26):
I really do.
Speaker 10 (18:27):
And sadly, most people, including many Christians, have the same
opinion you do. When they think of Noah's art, they
think of a simple children's.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
Story because that's what.
Speaker 10 (18:38):
It is, because that's how it's often presented. And it's
a shame because it gives the impression that the biblical.
Speaker 7 (18:45):
Account is a fairy tale. But the arc was real
and it was huge. Oh yes, young.
Speaker 5 (18:53):
Lady, How do you know that that it was real?
Speaker 10 (18:56):
Well, the most important way I know is because the
Bible tells us how how big it was. But I've
also seen it, Swart, and boy, it was impressive.
Speaker 3 (19:06):
You've seen it.
Speaker 10 (19:08):
Well, there's a place in Kentucky where they built an
awesome replica of the arc.
Speaker 7 (19:12):
You should go see it, yay Field trip to Kentucky.
Speaker 3 (19:17):
I'm afraid that's not in the school's budget, Harold.
Speaker 5 (19:20):
So how big was the arc?
Speaker 10 (19:22):
Well, the Bible says it was three hundred cubits long
and fifty cubits wide.
Speaker 5 (19:28):
How big is three hundred cubes?
Speaker 3 (19:30):
Cubits?
Speaker 7 (19:30):
Fluke, not cubes?
Speaker 11 (19:33):
What's a cubit?
Speaker 10 (19:34):
Think of it as the length from your elbow to
the tip of your fingers, roughly eighteen to twenty inches long.
Speaker 3 (19:42):
So three hundred cubits would be how long? You know?
Speaker 7 (19:46):
I have an idea.
Speaker 10 (19:48):
It looks like the rain's letting up some ds. Could
we all go outside to the soccer field.
Speaker 13 (19:54):
Well, will it help us get to the bottom of
what's going on?
Speaker 3 (19:59):
Yes, well then let's go.
Speaker 4 (20:02):
Yeah, let trip to the field.
Speaker 1 (20:08):
Why does Rich want everyone to go out to the
soccer field? Can you guess? We'll take a short break
and find out after this.
