Speaker 1 (00:01):
Today I'm prmise heart. Pastor Jeff Shreeve reveals what real
faith for real life looks like.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Do you have it?

Speaker 3 (00:10):
Life has a way of changing our perspective of things.
It has a way of redefining lofty theories and know
it all answers and real life. If we're all honest,
real life can be really.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Hard at times.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Listen, you need real faith for real life. Secondhand faith
doesn't cut it. The pastor's faith, your parents' faith, grandma's
faith doesn't cut it. You have to have your faith,
real faith for real life.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
As real life can be hard at times, what do
you do when that real life slaps you in the face.

(01:19):
Do you have a real faith that can overcome tough times?
This is from his heart, the pastor Jeff Shreve Thank
you for joining us today for a message about real
faith or real life. It's a stirring message about what
real faith looks like and how to live it out
every day. The message is just one of eight in

(01:40):
the series Rollercoaster Facing the ups and downs of life.
You'll be blessed with this message today. Open your Bible
to chapter twenty seven of the Book of Psalms. Here's
Pastor Jeff to show us what real faith or real
life looks like.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
Over the years, I have counseled lots of people in
various situations and problems, and marital problems and spiritual problems,
and family problems and this problem and that problem, and
addiction problems. And I believe that when I counsel, I
really pray and ask the Lord to show me what
to say. And I believe that I give people good, solid,

(02:19):
biblical advice.

Speaker 4 (02:21):
But I always add this caveat.

Speaker 3 (02:24):
What I'm telling you to do, I'll say is right,
and it's what you need to do.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
But know this, it's not easy to do.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
And if I were in your shoes, I would have
trouble too doing this. So I don't want you to
think that I'm just doleing out answers like a pharmacist
will dole out pills and say, hey, take two.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Scriptures and call me in the morning. It's not like that.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
Real life can get really hard, and it can get
hard for every one of us, from the Billy Grahams
of this world all way down to the Billy Bobs.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
The Christian life is not easy.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
As Adrian Rodgers says, it's not hard, it's impossible.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
The only one who can.

Speaker 4 (03:11):
Live it is Jesus.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
Now, what do you do when real life slaps you
in the face, and that happens to all of us.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
Where you're going along and all of a sudden bam.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
Real life slaps you in the face and your spouse
comes homes one day and says, I found somebody else
I want out, And your whole world craters when a
loved one dies, when your company goes bankrupt, when you
have to start over and you're fifty five years old,
what do you.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
Do when that happens.

Speaker 3 (03:48):
Listen, you need real faith for real life. Secondhand faith
doesn't cut it. The pastor's faith, your parents' faith, grandma's
faith doesn't cut it. You have to have your faith,
real faith for real life.

Speaker 4 (04:05):
Now we're in a series on the psalms.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
We are calling this series roller Coaster, facing the ups
and downs of life, and we want to look today
at Psalm twenty seven, a Psalm of David, a psalm
that David wrote before he became king. It's a psalm
that he wrote when he was on the run from Saul,

(04:28):
who was the first king of Israel, and David spent
so many years of his life running from Saul and
hiding from Saul, and hiding from Saul and running from Saul.
And it was very, very difficult for him. Lots of
scary times for him. But David was a man who
experienced the victories of life. He experienced the valleys of life.

(04:52):
He overcame them all. Why because he had real faith.
He had real faith to face the.

Speaker 4 (04:57):
Issues of real life.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
The Bible says in First John, chapter five, verse four,
for whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And
this is the victory that has overcome the world our faith. Hey,
let's get real personal. Do you do you have real
faith for real life? Psalm twenty seven. I'll be in reading.

(05:23):
In verse one, David said.

Speaker 4 (05:25):
The Lord is my Light and my salvation.

Speaker 3 (05:30):
Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defense of
my life, whom.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
Shall I dread.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
We're going to go through this Psalm in pieces, and
I want you to notice with me three key aspects
of real faith, real faith for real life. Aspect number one,
real faith is rooted in the real God.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
Real faith is rooted in the real God.

Speaker 3 (05:55):
Now, David didn't have faith in faith like that old
children's book The little train that could who's facing the
hill and saying, I think I can, I think I can.
I think I can. I think I can. That's kind
of faith in faith. David didn't have that. David had
faith in God. He had faith in the One True God.

(06:18):
He had faith in Yahweh God. Now look what it says.
In verse one new American standard says, the Lord all
in caps. The Lord all in caps is my life,
in my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The Lord all
in caps is the defense of my life? Whom shall
I dread? Anytime you read Lord all in caps, that

(06:40):
is the translator's way of letting you know, hey, that's
a special word for Lord. That is the special covenant
name of God. That is the name Yahweh y hw H.
Theologians call it the tetragrammaton. It's the four letters, the
four letters. That is such a special name of God.

(07:01):
You know, the Scripture says in the Ten Commandments, you
shall not take the name of the Lord. You're God
in vain, the name of Yahweh in vain. So the
Jews don't even like it. They won't even pronounce that name.
If they're reading the scripture and they come across Lord
the four letters yhwh.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
They just pronounce it adam I.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
They don't want to say the name because they're afraid
that if they say the name wrongly, that somehow they
could take that name in vain and God will not
leave him unpunished, It says, who takes his name in vain?

Speaker 2 (07:31):
So they're like, just.

Speaker 3 (07:31):
Don't say that name. That is the holy name of God.
Now we come across that name. In the book of Exodus,
when God appears to Moses at the burning Bush and
he says, Moses, I've seen the affliction of my people,
and I'm going to send you to them to set
them free. He says, well, who am I Lord that

(07:52):
I should go to them? And God says, well, I'll
be with you. And he says, well, who are you, Lord?

Speaker 2 (07:57):
What is your name? Lord?

Speaker 3 (07:58):
I don't even know your name, And you're going to
send me to the children of Israel. And I'm going
to say that I was sent by God, and they're
gonna say, well, what is his name? And I don't
know your name? And the Lord says this. In Exodus
chapter three, verse fourteen, God said to Moses, I am
who I am? And he said thus you shall say
to the sons of Israel, I Am has sent me

(08:20):
to you.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
Who is God?

Speaker 4 (08:23):
God is the Great.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
I Am. That's who God is.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
David's faith was rooted in Yahweh, God, who.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
Is the Great? I Am.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
When the Lord said to Moses that I am I am,
that I am that word I am. That's the verb
havah ha yah. It is connected to the four letters
y h, w H. Those things are connected. And God's
name is I Am. Now that's kind of a strange name,

(08:55):
isn't it When you think about it.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
You meet somebody on the street. What's your name? I am?

Speaker 3 (09:00):
Kind of a name is that? I mean God's name
as I am, I am what I am? As an
unfinished sentence, I am what, and God's saying, I am
everything you need. I am fill in the blank. I
am your creator. I am your sustainer. I am your provider.
I am your savior. I am your deliverer. I am

(09:23):
your peace, I am your joy, I am your hope.
I am everything to you. I Am the Great I Am.
In the New Testament, in the Gospel of John, the
Jews knew this name. I mean, they knew this story
really well.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
And they knew. I mean, you don't say the name.
And when God's.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
Name is, I am related to yhwh Jesus was having
an argument one day with the religious leaders. They're constantly
coming after him, pursuing him and trying to discredit him,
and so they were having this argument in John chapter
and Jesus was tough on those guys. He told him

(10:02):
in John chapter eight, you are of your father, the devil,
and you want to do the desires of your father.
He was a murderer from the beginning. He's a liar
and the father of lies. You're just like him. Well,
that doesn't set well with the religious leaders, and so
they get into this and Jesus said, you know what,
Abraham rejoiced to see my day and he saw it

(10:22):
and was glad.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
And they said, Abraham, you're not.

Speaker 3 (10:26):
Yet fifty years old. How is it that you have
seen Abraham? And Jesus said this John chapter eight. Truly, truly,
I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.

Speaker 2 (10:43):
He didn't just say that, Did you hear what I hear?
Did you hear?

Speaker 3 (10:47):
And they picked up stones to stone him. Why because
you just said you were God? You just said you
were the great I am before Abraham was born, I am,
and you tipped it all began with truly, truly, pay attention,
pay attention, listen to this, guys, before Abraham was born.

Speaker 2 (11:07):
I am. God is the Great. I am.

Speaker 3 (11:09):
Jesus is God. He is God, He is the Great.
I am.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
David knew the Great. I am, and see God is
the Great.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
I am.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
And here is the God.

Speaker 3 (11:26):
That we can know and know him personally. Look what
he says in verse one, The Lord is my light
and my salvation.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
Whom shall I fear?

Speaker 4 (11:38):
The Lord is the defense of my life.

Speaker 2 (11:41):
Whom shall I dread?

Speaker 3 (11:42):
My my my He doesn't say the Lord is a
light and a salvation. No, he's my light and my salvation.
He's the defense of my life. He is personal to me.
I personally know him, I personally love him.

Speaker 2 (11:57):
I have a relationship with him.

Speaker 3 (12:00):
So many people in church, even in good, solid Bible
believing churches, so many people in the church they don't
know God. They know about God, it's all in their
head and they get the idea that Christianity is just
like religion. It's just, you know, you're just kind of
born into it. You know, you get to a certain
age and I'm gonna get baptized, and you just kind

(12:22):
of go through the motions. It's just religion. Christianity is
not religion. Going to heaven is not religion. It's a
relationship with God. Jesus said in John chapter seventeen and
verse three, in his Great High priestly prayer. He said this,
this is eternal life, that they may know you, the

(12:43):
only true God.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
And Jesus Christ, to him you have sent to know you.

Speaker 3 (12:49):
Now, when you talk about knowing someone, see to the Jews,
they would use that word no to mean intimate personal relation,
a relationship.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
A man would know his wife.

Speaker 3 (13:03):
Adam knew Eve and they gave birth to a son.
It had to do with intimate personal relationship. And the
Lord says, that is the way you are to be
with me. We're to have an intimate personal relationship, a
heart to heart relationship, not just in your head. The

(13:23):
devil believes in God in his head. He has no
relationship with God in his heart. But the devil knows
God's real right. It takes more than that. The Scripture
says in the Book of James, do you believe that
God is one?

Speaker 2 (13:36):
Do you believe in God?

Speaker 4 (13:37):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (13:37):
Yeah, I believe in God. Well, whoop dee do.

Speaker 3 (13:40):
The demons also believe in tremble. You have faith like
a demon. That's not gonna get you to heaven. The
faith of a demon doesn't get you to heaven. It
is not head. Knowledge is heart, knowledge that reveals the
Lord to you and establishes a relationship between you and
the Lord. So the Lord is the God that you
can know so personally, the Great I am the God

(14:01):
who spoke the worlds into existence.

Speaker 2 (14:03):
I can know him personally.

Speaker 3 (14:04):
And here's the God that we can know better and
better each day we can grow in our relationship with
the Lord. David was growing in his relationship with the Lord.
He says in verse eight. When you said to me,
seek my face, my heart said to you your faith,
O Lord, I shall seek.

Speaker 2 (14:26):
Teach me your way, verse eleven.

Speaker 4 (14:27):
Teach me your way, oh Lord.

Speaker 2 (14:30):
And David was seeking God. He says in verse four.

Speaker 3 (14:35):
One thing I asked from the Lord that I shall seek,
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life, to behold the beauty
of the Lord.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
And to meditate in his temple. Oh.

Speaker 3 (14:44):
David loved to spend time with God. Do you love
to spend time with God? So many times we wonder, well,
why am I not growing in my faith?

Speaker 2 (14:53):
You spend much time with the Lord.

Speaker 3 (14:56):
Christian life is all about knowing God, about knowing Him
more intimately, you got to spend time with God to
know God. And if you don't spend time with God,
you're not going to know him very well. And when
God says, seek my face, David said, my heart said
to you your faith, O Lord, I shall seek you.

(15:16):
Know that verse that we like to quote Second Chronicles,
chapter seven, verse fourteen. If my people who are called
by my name will humble themselves in pray and seek
my face, my face, not my hand, not what I
can do, my face, who I am.

Speaker 2 (15:31):
And to want to get to know me, to want to.

Speaker 3 (15:33):
Get right with me, then I will hear from heaven,
will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. Hey,
what is the first aspect? Real faith is rooted in
the real God. Second aspect, real faith is rooted in
real confidence in the real God, real confidence in the

(15:54):
real God. Now, David was facing difficulty, no doubt, he
had difficulty. He talks about the difficulty that he faced,
but he was trusting God, he says in verse two,
when evildoers came upon me to devour my flesh, my adversaries,
and my enemies, they stumbled and fell though a host

(16:15):
in camp against me. My heart will not fear the
war arise against me. In spite of this, I shall
be confident. Verse five says for in the day of trouble,
he will conceal me in his tabernacle, in the secret
place of his tent, he will hide me.

Speaker 2 (16:32):
He will lift me up on a rock.

Speaker 3 (16:33):
And now my head will be lifted up above my
enemies around me, and I will offer in his tense
sacrifice with shouts of joy. I will sing, yes, I
will sing praises to the Lord. David was facing difficulty.
Remember I told you he spends a portion of his life,
probably about ten years, on the run from Saul, running

(16:54):
and hiding and hiding and running. He's just constantly moving around,
and Saul was hunting him like you had an animal.
And David was facing fears. That's why he starts it off.
The Lord is my Light and my salvation. Whom shall
I fear?

Speaker 2 (17:09):
Now?

Speaker 3 (17:10):
When he gets to verse two, he talks about an
issue in his life where he faced this before where
people were coming upon him, and it's a past tense issue.
He says, you know, when evildoers came upon me before
to devour my flesh, they stumbled and fell. That happened before,

(17:30):
and so now I am able to say with confidence,
though a host en camp against me, in spite of this,
I shall be confident God, you did it before, and God,
I'm trusting you to deliver me again. Real faith is
rooted in real confidence. Now, if you want to rise

(17:52):
above the difficulties of real life, first of all, you
have to remember that God has an undefeated track record.
God is the all time, undisputed, undefeated heavyweight champion of
the universe. And God is able to handle any and

(18:13):
every situation. And so David remembered in verse two what
God had done, and it made a huge difference in
his life because he's like, Okay, wait a minute, I
was in this situation before, and God delivered me before,
and so there I can trust God to deliver me
now because God is a delivering God. He remembered his

(18:35):
track record. You remember God's track record. You know so
much of the Bible and so much of preaching, and
so much of coming together as a church is to
come together to remember remember what God has done. It's
not so much to learn from things that you said.
I've never known that before. I never heard.

Speaker 2 (18:51):
About this guy, David. It's to be reminded of things.

Speaker 3 (18:55):
And so much of the time we forget and we
don't remember what the Lord has done. And so when
we're facing new difficulties, we start to melt in fear
because we forget. Hey, the God who delivered me before,
he's still around. The Lord said, it's King at the flood. Yes,
the Lord says, his king forever. He's still king. He's

(19:15):
still in charge, he's still looking out for me. And
I can trust him and not be afraid Psal'm seventy eight.

Speaker 2 (19:22):
This almost not.

Speaker 3 (19:23):
David was recounting what happened in the wilderness with the
children of Israel, and he said this, how often they
rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in
the desert, And again and again they tempted God and
pained the Holy One of Israel. And watch this, they
did not remember his power the day when he redeemed

(19:46):
them from the adversary, when he performed his signs in Egypt.
They lived in fear and in faithlessness. Why because they
forgot what God had done. And you know, it's just like, well, yeah,
that was yesterday. They're singing that Janet Jackson song what
have you done for Me lately? And it's like, well,

(20:07):
what did I do for you before you forgot that?

Speaker 4 (20:10):
Did you forget Egypt?

Speaker 2 (20:11):
How could you forget Egypt?

Speaker 3 (20:13):
Mas's big news when I delivered you out of Egypt.

Speaker 2 (20:17):
You know what's so funny.

Speaker 3 (20:18):
You know, remember when the spies came and they spied
out the land.

Speaker 2 (20:21):
They were going to go into the Promised Land.

Speaker 3 (20:23):
And they spied out the land and they said, oh,
we can't go in the Promised Land. They're giants in
the land. They almost got the whole crowd to go
back to Egypt. God had to intervene. The Glory of
the Lord came and but God said, listen, because you're faithless,
you're gonna wander around wilderness for forty years. And they
did tell everybody twenty years old and upright, all the
faithless people died except for two Caleb and Joshua. Because

(20:45):
those were the two spies who had faith. They said,
let's take the land. God's going to give it to us.
But here's the interesting thing. When they finally do go
in the land, Joshua now is the leader. Moses has
passed on. Joshua's the leader. They go into the land
and they meet, they have the harlot. She says to them,
where have you guys been? I mean, we were wondering

(21:07):
why you weren't coming, and we heard of what your
God did to the Egyptians, and we were scared to death.
And here you have the enemies of God are melting
in fear. The people of God who should have been
all gung ho, Hey, our.

Speaker 2 (21:24):
God just defeated Egypt. Watch out.

Speaker 3 (21:27):
But they had forgotten what God had done, and so
they were the ones that were cowering in fear.

Speaker 2 (21:32):
And it was totally flip flopped. It was totally reversed.

Speaker 3 (21:35):
Hey, listen, if you're going to live in victory, if
I'm gonna live in victory, we have to remember what
God has done.

Speaker 1 (21:45):
