Hello, I'm Billy Lambert. I am the regular speaker on
Getting to Know Your Bible, and I want to welcome
you today.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
This may be the.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Very first time that you have seen this telecast. I
want you to know that the thing that we emphasize
on getting to Know your Bible is a word of God.
The Bible is the greatest book that has ever been written.
Many years ago, there were those that wrote books that
thought they would replace the Bible. That's what Thomas Paine
(00:55):
thought when he wrote The Age of Reason. But the
Bible continues to live after century. Jesus said, heaven and
earth shall pass away, but my Word shall not pass away.
So on getting to Know your Bible, we're teaching from
the timeless Word of God. The Bible is God's book,
the greatest book that has ever been written.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
And today we're.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Going to be opening up the pages of the Word
of God and delivering a message to you from God's book.
Today we're going to be seeing a one of our
classics that is a production of one of our telecasts
from time in the past, and we want you to

I want to read a passage of scripture out of
the eighty fifth Psalm, and we're going to be reading
verse number six. Will you not revive us again? That
your people may rejoice in you? Revive us again? The
(02:50):
word revive means to bring back to life. It means
to cause one to be energized, it cause one to
be active again. Revive us again. I want you to
think about that statement. Will you not revive us again?
(03:15):
Who needs a reviving us? Who are the us God's people.
From time to time, God's people need reviving. Revive us again,
And I'm putting emphasis on the word again. You see,
from time to time we need reviving. We may, as
(03:39):
God's people, go through a period of prosperity, that is
where the church is growing and doing good, and there
may be what we might refer to as a dry
spell where the church is not doing good. And according
to all of the reports that we're hearing today, the
church in America is not doing good. Churches all over
(04:02):
America are in trouble today, and the Churches of Christ
are not an exception to that. We need a revival. Lord,
Would you please revive us again that your people may
rejoice in You in order that we might have happy times,
(04:27):
that we might have pleasant times, good times. I believe
a prayer that we need to be praying today for
God's people, for the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Please Lord, revive us again. But why would we have
to pray a prayer like that? Well, I think one
(04:49):
of the reasons that we need to pray a prayer
like that is because we may not be nearly as
well off as we think. We may not be as
good a condition as we think we are. That seemed
to have been the problem of the Church at Sardies.
In Revelation chapter three and verse one, Sardis is described
(05:12):
as a church that had a name, that it was alive,
and yet it was dead.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
It might have been if you had visited one of.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
The services of the Sardist Church of Christ, you might
have said, you know, this is a good church. They
seem to be active, they seem to be all alive,
they seem to be on fire for the Lord. But
God knew the real condition. He said, they have a name,
they're alive, but they're dead. Sardis was sort of like
(05:42):
a mannequin and a store window. It looks alive, but
it's not any life in it. And the church at
Sardis was sort of like an artificial flower. It looks
like it's real, but it's not real at all. That
the church at Sardis was like a petrified forest. It
looked like it was real, but there it wasn't real,
(06:06):
And so they were not nearly as well off as
they thought. That was also the problem with the Church
of a Leadaeseah. In the third chapter of Revelation, beginning
in the fourteenth verse. The Lord wrote a letter to
that church, and he said, I know your works that
you're neither cold.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
You're not hot, but you're looke warm.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
And he said, you say that we're rich and increased
in goods and have need of nothing. That was the
estimate that the people in layout of Sea had of themselves.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
They said, we are.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
Rich, we are increased in goods, and we don't have
a need of anything. In Jesus said to.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Them, I know you.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
You may not know your own condition, but I know
your condition, and I know that you're wretched, and you're miserable,
and you're poor, and you're blind and you're naked. See
the fact is they weren't. Hearely as well off as they.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
Thought they were. And sometimes it's hard for us to
really see how we really are.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
And so we need a revival because we may not
be as well off as we think. We may be
in a deplorable spiritual state, and yet we've convinced ourselves
we are okay.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
To help you in your study of the Bible, we
want to send you this Bible correspondence course. This course
is non denominational, it's based on the Bible. It's conducted
by mail, and it's free to receive this course right
to getting to Know your Bible po Box three one four, Summerdale,
Alabama three six five eight zero or call till free
(07:45):
one eight seven seven seven one one five two one four.
Speaker 2 (07:52):
I think another reason that a revival is needed is
because it is it is so easy for us to forget.
It is easy to forget. People forget God all the time.
That's the reason Solomon said, remember now, thy Creator, in
the days of thy youth, don't forget about God. In
Jeremiah two thirty two, the prophet said, cannot made forget ornaments,
(08:16):
or bride or retire. Yet my people have forgotten me
days without a number of people have traditionally and historically
forgotten about God, and so it is easy to forget.
In Second Peter, the first chapter, in verse nine, after
Peter enumerates those virtues that are those graces that ought
(08:38):
to be characteristic of the life of a child of God,
he said, he that lacketh these things is blind and
cannot see afar off, and has forgotten that he was
purged from his old sins. You see, it's easy to
forget what the Lord's done for us. It's easy to
(09:00):
just sort of drift along and forget. Hebrews two and
one says, well, to give the more earnest heed to
the things which we have heard, lest at any time
we should let them slip. We need to be careful
that we do not forget. Do you remember when you
became a Christian? Do you remember how you felt the
(09:22):
day that you were baptizing to Christ. Do you remember
the zeal, the enthusiasm that was in your heart. You
committed yourself to read the Bible, to pray every day.
You are not going to miss the service of the church.
You're going to be there Sunday night, at Wednesday night.
You're going to attend vacation, Bible school, and revivals and
(09:43):
gospel meetings they had in the church. But as time
went on, something happened, and that zeal and that enthusiasm
begins to wane.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
It's easy for that to happen. So Lord revive us again.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
Another reason that when need to pray for revivalists, it
is because it is so easy to become.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
Engrossed in the material world around us. That's easy to happen.
Jesus warned about that in Luke the tenth chapter and
in verse number twelfth, chapter rather.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
In verse fifteen, where he said, take heed and beware
of covetousness. For a man's life consisteth not in the
abundance of the things which he possesses. Life is more
than what we possess. Life is more than houses and lands,
and cars and bank accounts. Life is more than the
(10:44):
material things around us. But it's so easy to become
so involved in all of that that it makes us
to forget the most spirit the most important things, and
the spiritual things of life. In Verse tiventy six and
verse seventeen, listen to the instructions that were given to.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
People that were wealthy.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
People command those who are rich in the present age
not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches,
but in the Living God, who gives us richly all
things to enjoy. So here people that are wealthy are
encouraged not to let those things draw them away from God.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
But there are numbers.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
Of people who have allowed that to happen, and are
allowing that to happen right now.
Speaker 3 (11:38):
Don't let the world draw you away from God. So
we need to.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
Pray, Lord revive us again, that your people may rejoice
in you.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
But you say, well, if I do that, what will
it do for me? Well?
Speaker 2 (11:54):
What benefit is there in a revival? Well, one of
the benefits of a spirit ritual revival is that it
gets us back into the Word of God.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
Do you read the Bible every day? You see?
Speaker 2 (12:11):
Well, not every day, brother Lambert, but I carry it
with me on Sunday and I follow along while the
preacher's preaching.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
And where is your Bible? Right now?
Speaker 2 (12:21):
You know what I've noticed in driving around through the
average town, USA. There are a lot of Bibles on
dashboards of cars. Have you ever noticed that a lot
of people leave their Bible on the dashboard of the
car if they know where it is next Sunday morning.
I'm wondering what do they do from Sunday to Sunday
(12:42):
with the Word of God. You see, if we have
a revival, it's going to get us back into the
Word where.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
We're diligent students of the Word.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
We need to be like the people of whom we
read in the seventeenth Chapter of Acts in verse eleven.
These were more noble than those of Thessalonika, in that
they receive the Word with all readiness of mind and search.
The scriptures how often daily? Why to see whether those
things were sold? We need to be searching the scriptures daily.
(13:13):
And you don't have to read half a dozen chapters
to be a daily Bible student. You don't have to
read half the Bible to be a daily Bible reader.
Oh suppose you only read one passage of scripture a day.
You pick out a book of the Bible, and out
of that book of the Bible, you're going to read
one passage a day, and you're going to meditate on
(13:35):
that passage. You're going to write down some things that
that means to you, applications to your life that you
make out of that passage.
Speaker 3 (13:43):
And you do that for an entire week.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
You say, well, that'd be only seven Brothers versus Brother Lamber.
But that's seven more verses that you knew then, you know,
than you knew before you started. You see, we have
some system in the study the Bible. It'd be a
wonderful thing if you read the Bible in its entirety,
(14:05):
but read it and make an application of the things
that you read and search those scriptures. We need to
be getting people back into the Word of God. And
that's exactly what a spiritual Revible will do, and a
revival will cause us to become what God wants us
(14:26):
to be. I get amused sometimes at talking to preachers,
are listening to them talk when they get together and
they begin to talk about the various places where they preach,
and they say, well, I'm trying to get them to
do thus and so, and the other says, well, I'm
encouraging them to do thus and so. I'm more concerned
(14:49):
about trying to get people to do what God wants
them to do. I want to be everything that God
wants me to be. I don't want to disappoint God.
And I'm not trying to fit into some mold that
some man has made. I want to fit into God's mold.
And I want to be God's person. I want to
(15:10):
be God's man, and you should be. Want to be
God's man and God's woman and become everything that God
wants you to be. I am convinced that we need
to be active, we need to be alive, we need
to be awake. Every figure of God's people in the
(15:32):
Bible pictures us like that. Every figure while the Bible
pictures us as lights in the world.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
Light shine, light shine, and You need to be a
light in the world.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
We need to be a stone in the building giving support.
We need to be a braind the vine bearing fruit.
You see, every figure that is used in the Bible
to describes God's people pictures us as being active and
(16:14):
alive and a way. And that's exactly what a revival
will do for us. A revival all soul will cause
us to focus more intently upon being soul winners for Jesus.
One woman said that she was so busy doing church
work she didn't have time to save souls. And my
(16:36):
question would be, what.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
In the world is she think church work is all about.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
It is the mission of the Church of the Lord
Jesus Christ to try to save the souls of men
and women. Solomon said here that win of souls is wise.
It takes wisdom to win.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
Souls, but when souls we must.
Speaker 2 (16:56):
Jesus came to some of the disciples and he said,
I'll make you fishers of me. We're to be fishers
of men. We're not to be keepers of the aquarium.
We need to be trying to fish for men. And
the whole world is an opportunity for us today. We
need to be saving souls, and they're everywhere. They're in
(17:22):
the schools where your children attend, there at the office
where you work, then the restaurants where you go and eat.
My wife and I became acquainted with a woman who
was a waitress, and we became good friends, so much
so that we began to invite her to be with
our entire family on Thanksgiving, she and her two sons.
(17:47):
And that woman now is dying with cancer. And just
a few days ago I sat down with her and
I talked to her about Jesus and I said to her,
there's nothing I can do for you physically, but I
work for a different kind of doctor, and his name
(18:07):
is Jesus. And I explain to her what Jesus did
for her on the Cross. I explained to her what
God would have her to do to be saved, and
she allowed me to baptize her into Jesus Christ.
Speaker 3 (18:27):
It's important to her.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
Because she's in stage four of cancer that is all
over her body.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
There are people everywhere.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
That need to hear about Jesus, and we need to
do everything that we can to reach.
Speaker 3 (18:43):
One more soul for Christ.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
You see, a revival will get us back into the
soul saving business. It's not a sideline for a Christian.
That's our job, it's our main thrust in life. I've
often thought that we're nothing more than beggars telling other
beggars where to get food.
Speaker 3 (19:08):
I've often thought.
Speaker 2 (19:08):
That the church ought to be looked at like it's
a hospital for sick people. You see, we're out to
try to seek and to save by which is lost Luke,
chapter nineteen and verse number ten. That's what a revival
would do for us. It will get us back into
the soul saving business. Maybe going to have to lay
(19:32):
down your television guide, get up out of here recliner,
and get out and knock on somebody's door and talk
to them about their soul. We need to be active today.
We need to be alive, we need to be awake today.
And the revival will make us spiritual people. I believe
(19:55):
that we need to be as spiritually as we possibly can.
And I believe that the majority of people today who
believe in God and believe the Bible are concerned about
spirituality in their lives and in their families.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
I believe that.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
I know this according to the Bible in Romans chapter eight,
verse five and six, that to be coldly minded.
Speaker 3 (20:20):
Is death. To be spiritually minded is life and peace.
And to be.
Speaker 2 (20:25):
Spiritually minded means to be focused on the things of
the spirit. To be spiritually minded means that you have
Jesus as your guide and your model, your example in life,
and you follow that example that would lead you to
a deeper spiritual life. And a revival will help us
(20:47):
become that. I think one of the things that would
help us to deepen our spiritual lives is to have
a greater prayer life. How is your prayer life? Sufore
someone were to ask you did you pray last Thursday?
How would you answer? Well, if you have a healthy
(21:07):
prayer life, you would say yes, indeed I did. Because
you see, if you have a healthy prayer life, that
means you're talking to God every day, doesn't it. And
so we need to have a revival because it's going
to help us to be more spiritually minded. It's going
(21:27):
to get us on our knees where we pray to God.
We pour out our petitions and our needs and our
wants and our hearts to God. Oh, we need a revival, Lord,
revive us again that your people may rejoice in you.
Let me tell you something else that a revival will do.
(21:48):
It's going to straighten.
Speaker 3 (21:49):
Up your attitude.
Speaker 2 (21:52):
I believe attitude is one of the most important things
about life.
Speaker 3 (21:56):
If you have the right attitude, you can be scessful.
Speaker 2 (22:02):
Attitude is more important than your aptitude because your attitude
determines your altitude in life, how high.
Speaker 3 (22:09):
You're going to go in life.
Speaker 2 (22:11):
And there are those that have been failures in life
because of their attitude. They did not have the right attitude.
Attitude is important, well, It's importing everything that you do
in life. Attitude is important. In sports, coaches have learned
that it is not only important to have their players
(22:37):
physically fit, they need to have them mentally fit, and
they need to instill in them a winning attitude. If
they do not have a winning attitude, then they're not
going to have a winning season. It's important in everything
in life. Attitude is important in our work ethic. Do
(23:01):
you have a good work ethic? Are you just working
just to get by? I read the story about some
men they're out working on the railroad and they were
driving spikes in the railroad, and the train came up
and stopped where they were, and there's a someone came
to the door of that coach and motioned to one
(23:22):
of the men driving spikes to come up into the
car with him. Stay there about an hour, and when
he came back to one of the men working with
him said, do you know who that man was?
Speaker 1 (23:33):
All?
Speaker 2 (23:34):
He said, yes, that man owns a railroad. Now he
and I went to work for the railroad the same day. Well,
they said, how do you account for the fact that
he now owns a railroad and you're still driving spikes?
Speaker 3 (23:49):
He said, twenty years ago, I went to work for
five dollars a day.
Speaker 2 (23:56):
Twenty years ago he went to work for the railroad. Said,
it makes a big difference in your attitude. And we
have people spiritually whose attitude needs to be adjusted, and
the attitude that you have about God determines it all.
How do you really feel about God? Do you love
(24:18):
God with all your heart's, soul, mind and strength? And
how you feel about your neighbor do you love him
as you love yourself? How do we feel about people?
You see, a revival will help change our attitudes, and
we need to have an attitude of love for all men.
Jesus said, by this shall all men know that you're
(24:40):
my disciples.
Speaker 3 (24:42):
If you have love.
Speaker 2 (24:43):
One toward another, and when we do not have that
love that in our hearts for other people, it shows,
it shows in our attitude. Your attitude is showing, and
so we need a revival because it sweeton our attitude.
(25:03):
It will do away with those who become spiritual vigilantes,
always looking for something that they can criticize about others
in the church. And it will help us to determine
that we be want to be as much like the
Lord Jesus Christ as we possibly can. How are we
going to have a revival, Well, first of all, we've
(25:27):
got to have some contrition in our hearts. We've got
to realize how much we need the Lord. David felt
that he needed the Lord when he declared in the
fifty first Psalm, have mercy upon the Old God, according
to my loving kindness, according to the multitude of thy
tender mercies, blought out my transgressions. And then David acknowledged
(25:49):
his sin. He said, my sin is ever before me
against you. You only have my sin. And then he said,
create in me a clean heart. We need to clean
our hearts up before God. And it takes the blood
of Jesus to do that, and if you've never had
your sins washed in the blood of the Lamb, now
was the time to do it. I would urge you
not to hesitate, not today to delay another minute. Find
(26:12):
some servant of God to baptize you into Christ.
Speaker 3 (26:15):
For the remission of your sins.
Speaker 2 (26:17):
Time is on your side right now, but it's not
going to always be that way. You have that opportunity.
Come as a believer in Jesus, repenting of your sins,
confessing your faith in Christ, and be baptized for the
remission of those sins. Jesus said that believeth and his
baptized shall be saved. I want to thank you for
