Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome to this edition of PowerPoint with Jack Graham. A
little later in the program, we'll tell you how you
can get a copy of doctor Graham's book, The Jesus Book.
But first, here's the message good news, bad news.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
What we have in Romans chapter one, eighteen through thirty
two is a walk on the wild side, if you will,
Because as Paul is making his case for Christ and
the need of everyone, the necessity of the Gospel for
people to be saved, for people to go to heaven,
he talks about sin and guilt. I was walking in
the mall, dev and I we went by a jewelry store,
(00:43):
and I noticed a young couple there and they were
picking out a ring, and the jeweler had brought out
a black piece of cloth to lay those diamonds on
the cloth so they could see the color and the
clarity and the beauty of those diamonds. Even better, that's
what's happening here in God's Word is against the dark
backdrop of sin and judgment and even the wrath of
(01:07):
God upon sin. Against that dark, terrible background comes this
beautiful good news of the Gospel of Christ. So what
we're going to do is read it straight up, and
then the message verse eighteen. For the wrath of God
(01:30):
is revealed from Heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men,
who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can
be known about God is plain to them because God
has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely,
his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived
(01:54):
ever since the creation of the world in the things
that have been made. So they are without excuse verse
twenty one. For although they knew God, they did not
honor him as God or give thanks to him. For
they became feudal in their thinking, and their foolish hearts
were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools and
(02:19):
exchange the glory of the immortal God for images. This
is idolatry, resembling mortal men and birds and animals and
creeping things. Therefore, watch this God gave them up in
the lust of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring
of their bodies among themselves. Now we're about to get
to some adult content. I can tell you if you're
(02:42):
a parent of one of these preteens, this is going
to be an opportunity for you to talk to your children.
So here's what the scripture says. God gave them up
to impurity and verse twenty five because they exchanged the
truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served
the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
(03:02):
God gave them up in verse twenty six for dishonorable
passions for their women, exchanged natural relations for those that
are contrary to nature. That's lesbianism. And the men likewise
gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with
passion for one another. That's homosexuality. Men committing shameless acts
(03:24):
with men and receiving in themselves indue penalty for their error.
Again adult content, verse twenty eight. And since they did
not see fit to acknowledge God, they suppressed the truth.
They exchanged truth for lives. God gave them up to
a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.
(03:48):
And here's the result. They were filled with all manner
of unrighteousness and evil and coveteousness and malice. They were
full of envy and murder and strife and deceit and maliciousness.
Their gossips and slanderers and haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful,
inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.
(04:12):
What a description of our collapsing culture today. And though
they knew are no God's decree that those who practice
such things deserve to die, they not only do them,
but give approval to those who practice them. So now
we're passing laws and approving of sinful behavior and codifying it.
(04:33):
And what used to be, as one man said, slinking
down back alleys is now marching down Main Street in America.
This sermon is about It's not about that really all that.
It's about God's righteous judgment for all sin. The Scripture
(04:55):
says that it is a fearful things to fall into
the hands of a living God in judgment. The Bible
says that God is angry with the wicked every day. God,
who is love, is also just and righteous, and his
love is a holy love. Because God is holy, the
(05:19):
scripture says of God, he is of purer eyes than
to behold iniquity, even to look at sin. When Jesus
died on the cross and became sin for us, took
our sin and God's wrath and judgment on himself. Jesus
cried out, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Because in that moment of spiritual death, when he was
(05:42):
bearing the sins of the world, God the Father turned
his back on his son. He could not with pure
eyes even to behold iniquity. God's wrath is poured out
on Jesus. So it's the good news in the midst
of all of this terrible news. Before we go on
in this message, we should make no apologies for God's
(06:05):
holy wrath, none or no excuses for the guilt of
every one of us, all of us and every person
on the face of the earth. The gospel truth includes
the fact that sin, that God must, in his holiness
and righteousness, judge sin and punish sin and sinners who
(06:27):
are unforgiven. That there is an eternal condemnation consequences to sin.
And that's what this is about. And when we take
a walk here in Romans chapter one, but for the
grace of God go every one of us. There is
no sin that you and I would not commit apart
(06:49):
from the love and the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.
It's all here, and so it reminds us in this terrifying,
dark and disturbing past, you're just how thankful we are.
This destroys our pride, and we remember that but for
(07:11):
the grace of God, there go I. There are three parts,
and I'm going to cover with you in this passage.
One is the dreadful problem of sin. Too, is the
destructive process or progress of sin, And finally is the
deadly penalty for sin. First, is this dreadful problem of sin.
(07:35):
We read about it early in the text. Verse eighteen says,
the wrath of God's revealed against Heaven, against all of
the unrighteousness of men. That's sin suppressing the truth. And
he goes on to talk about for everyone has some
knowledge of the truth. Everyone has seen something of the
(07:56):
greatness and the glory of God. He references creation for example,
that God is the maker of all things. He is
the creator and behind the complexity, the design of the
vastness of the universe, or looking through if not a telescope,
(08:17):
a microscope, and seeing the beauty and the clarity of
what God has made his fingerprints, his handiwork is everywhere.
In Psalm nineteen, it says the heavens declare the glory
of God. The skies. Science itself speaks of the intelligent
(08:38):
design of the universe, and so this is called by
theologians general revelation. It is revelation of God that is
seen in creation, what God has made. Just look around
you and all that God has made, the wonders of
his creation, the magnificence and the majesty of everything that
(09:01):
is around us and above us, and things we cannot
even see. That God made it all. We are, even
in the human being. The fact that we are made,
with all these cells in the DNA and all the structure.
We are fearfully and wonderfully made. We are not the
byproduct of some evolutionary process. We were not Man, did
(09:21):
not come from monkeys, but rather created by God by
the hand of God. But God, who created us, holds
us accountable for what we know. But the dreadful problem
of sin is that this judgment is upon us. That
(09:44):
God judges every human being and then comes this suppression.
And what people are doing is exchanging right here truth
for lies, and that's called id poetry. Idolatry is not
just making a monument or an idol out of wood
(10:05):
or stone or steel, but it is anything you love
or serve more than God. And the fact is, without God,
we make ourselves our own Gods.

Speaker 2 (11:28):
Good news, bad news, and from idolatry. You move in
a downward path, and here comes immorality. In the pagan world,
the ancient world of the Romans, idolatry was linked to
prostitution and sexual behavior and misbehavior of all kinds. Many
(11:50):
of the temples of that day, temples to Aphrodite, the
goddess of love, and others were dedicated to the worship
of sex and all the rest. The worship sex is God. Now,
God gave sex physical intimacy between a man and a
woman as a gift to be enjoyed, but it is
(12:13):
never to be a god to be worshiped. And in
America today and around the world, I would say, but
in our own country, we are worshiping this idol of
immorality and promiscuity, and as a result come all the
problems that we're facing. We talk about the abortion problem
(12:33):
that we have in America. The safety of life issue
is a result is a subset of what's happening in
immorality and the abuse and all the rest that's taking
place idolatry is connected to immorality. Always, always, when you
choose to be your own God, the next thing, you know,
(12:54):
you choose to do whatever you please. And so he
talks first then about this destructive process deconstruction. Sin. I
don't have to describe some of this. You're keeping up.
You're reading what some of the politicians and appointees and
(13:15):
all the rest are saying about acceptance and not only acceptance,
but approval and endorsement of lifestyles that are on a
fence to a holy God. So what does God do
about that? God's not a weak god. I know a
(13:37):
lot of people want, you know, a kinder, gentler God,
a doting, grandfatherly God. But God is not weak. God
is strong. He is a God that is to be respected, feared.
And what's happening to our society today is there's no
(14:01):
fear of God. The fear of the Lord is the
beginning of wisdom, and we've lost ours. So in verses
twenty four, twenty six, and twenty eight. In each of
these verses there's a repetitive phrase. It says, verse twenty four,
do you see it there? Therefore God gave them up?
And note that it happens again in verse twenty six,
(14:23):
God gave them up, and then again in verse twenty
eight we see it again, God gave them up, ultimately
to a debased mind. This word God gave them up.
This phrase very strong word. It means to hand over,
and it's really a picture of a judge handing over
(14:46):
a prisoner to go to judgment or prison or execution,
to hand over. It's also a word picture of a
boat going down a rapids out of control. In these words,
God abandons them. Can you think of anything worse than
(15:10):
being abandoned by God? That's what hell is. Hell is
being abandoned forever by God. Handed over to their behavior,
their lifestyle, the way they're living. God says, all right,
have your way, but does know that there are consequences.
(15:35):
This is called permissive judgment. But it's more than that,
this idea of God hands them over. God gives them over.
It's not only the judgment of permission, but it's a
push is punitive. It's just not that God says, oh,
go your own way. God actually gives a shove. Because
(15:56):
of the rebellion and the repression of sinful behavior. When
we refuse to repent and receive God suppress the truth.
We bring down on ourselves this judgment. That's why the
Bible speaks of people being lost. There are three steps
(16:16):
downward in this process. One verse twenty four is sexual impurity.
God gave them over in verse twenty four to sexual impurity.
That's immorality. That's this pornography plague that we've got going
on in the country right now and around the world,
exchanging truth for lies. Pornography men and women is a lie.
(16:41):
It's an idol. It will destroy you. It wars against
the soul and the immorality that's in our nation today,
the hedonism, the paganism, it's impurity, just the crastness and
the carnality, the language, people using vile and filthy words,
(17:05):
spewing them out in any place, it doesn't matter. Immorality.
That's a step down big time. This is heterosexual sin,
adultery and broken marriages because of this sin. Well, then
step two is homosexual behavior. That's verses twenty six and
twenty seven. We read it. I'm just gonna leave it
(17:26):
where God said it that it's unnatural. This is not
something you're born to be. This is not nature. This
is nurture. This is learned behavior and misbehavior. What the
scripture says here, look at it. It says, this is
with women exchanging again a lie the truth for a lie,
(17:48):
natural relations. This is not natural, This is unnatural. I
didn't say it. We're not talking about discrimination or civil
rights here, we're talking about accountability before God. God says,
this is not normal, this is not natural. This is
not how I designed you to be. When God made us,
(18:10):
he made us male and female. And now you've got
the whole transgender thing coming in and encouraging children to
choose their own gender as boys and girls. It's godless,
and it's the step that plunged into the pit today
(18:30):
a growing acceleration and acceptance. And then with men, this
is homosexuality, of course, lesbianism and homosexuality where men give
up natural relations with women and consumed with passion for
one another, burning and committing shameless acts with men and
(18:51):
receiving in themselves do penalty for their error. From the
beginning to the end of the Bible, God condemns homosexualityanism
in any form, an abomination to God. The judgment of
God is upon it, and all who practice these things.
(19:12):
You're not hearing this in the culture. You may not
be hearing it in your schools, you may not even
be hearing it in your homes, but you're hearing it
today in the Bible, God's word. Let's go back to
the beginning. The wrath of God is a holy love.
He says, don't hurt yourself, don't destroy yourself. There's nothing
(19:34):
that destroys human dignity and personality like these kinds of sins.
It just destroys people. I have seen the pain and
so of you, and as a pastor, I've been doing
this long enough. I've seen it with children in the
(19:58):
church and from the church, and I know some of
you right now, parents and even grandparents. You are in
a lot of pain about this because of the choices
your children have made, and maybe your grandchildren. So just
as if this were your child, church our mine. Remember,
God loves homosexuals, and God has called us to love
(20:23):
people with the love of God. It doesn't mean that
we don't have the right to speak up to protect
our children in the culture in society. Doesn't mean that
we can't make laws that are godly and holy and
righteous laws in a nation. But God loves every person
(20:43):
and Jesus died for you, and don't believe the lie
that Satan will tell you that you can't change, or
you're stuck in this forever. You're in a bondage. But
the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ can break
every change. These last verses here talks about the deadly
penalty for sin. Let's just look at verse thirty two.
(21:05):
It says, they know, list all these sins. Homosexuality is
not the only sin that condemns people to hell, or
even in my immorality, because he lists all these other
things here, I stopped to talk about disobedience to parents
and other kinds of sins, just evil and slander and
(21:26):
malice and gossip and all these other things. Right here
kind of closes it with verse thirty one, just you know, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Woo.
That's our world without God, and everyone's guilty. And then
we approve of such things, we applaud it. We're entertained.
(21:48):
Here's the thing I was looking at this this week,
and I just reminded myself that I we all of us.
If we're not cautious, we can be desensitized. All this stuff.
You ever been in a restaurant, you know, one of
those dark ones, fancy ones, and you can't even read them.
Menu is so dark, but if you stay in there
(22:09):
long enough, your eyes adjust to it. And we must
never get to the place apart from the word of
God that we adjust to the darkness, that we accommodate.
We compromise truth for error. That's what happens here, because
the result is death and judgment and wrath. This passage
(22:35):
of Scripture, yes it's a walk through hell. That's what
a hell is going to be like, but worse. But
thank God, there's good news because here's the gospel. Against
this backdrop, this terrible backdrop. Here comes the diamond, here
(22:58):
comes the stars. On a dark night, Jesus went to
the cross. Jesus lived a perfect life, and he went
to the cross voluntarily, and the wrath of God, the
judgment of God, was poured out on Jesus, He who
knew no sin, became sin for us that we might
be made the righteousness of God. We are unrighteousness, but
God in Christ is our righteousness. We are given redemption
(23:22):
and righteousness. We are forgiven, we are changed, we are
empowered to live a new life. Can he breaks the
power of canceled sin. He sets the prisoner free. We
are alive in Christ, no longer dead, living in our sin,
no longer destined and targeted for the judgment of God.
We are alive alive because Christ died and rose again.
(23:43):
And that is the good news. And there's not anyone
who cannot be saved by the goodness and the grace
and the loving kindness and the mercy of the Lord
Jesus Christ. So come to him.
Speaker 1 (23:55):

Speaker 2 (25:09):
Well, for the person who has never received Jesus as
Lord and savior, there's never been a better time than
right now for you to personally invite Jesus to come
into your life. He wants to save you from your sin.
He wants to deliver you from that life that you've
been living that doesn't honor Him and ultimately will end
up separated from God forever and ever. He died for
(25:31):
you on the cross, he rose again on the third Day.
So right now, wherever you are, invite Christ into your life.
Pray a prayer like this, Lord, Jesus, I turn from
my sin. I trust in you, I believe you died
for me and rose again. I receive you as my
Lord and my Savior, come into my life, change me,
(25:53):
and make me the person you want me to be.
And if you will sincerely pray a prayer like that,
and from your heart call upon the name of the Lord.
The Bible says whoever calls upon the name of the
Lord will be saved. Not hope so or think so,
but will be saved. You can have confidence and certainty
(26:13):
that Jesus is your Lord and your savior, and what
you've done by asking him into your life is for
real and it is forever. You know. There are others
who are listening to me today that you're a Christian.
There was a time in your life when you receive
Christ and you walked with him. But you've now walked
away from him. He turned your back on God. You've
(26:34):
been doing things that do not please him. Your life
is a mess, and yet Jesus hasn't given up on you.
You're his child. He loves you. He wants you to
come back to him. He's like that prodigal father who
waited for his son day after day to come home,
and when he did, rather than finding judgment, he found
grace and love and forgiveness and a place at the
(26:56):
table again. Jesus wants you to come back home to him.
Wherever you are, he's tracking you, and he has brought
you face to face with himself again. Today. Turn to
him repent of your sin, which means to turn from
your sin. Ask him to forgive you and give you
a brand new beginning in Him.
Speaker 1 (27:16):
