Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to Richard Ellis Talks with Richard Ellis. Thanks for
allowing us to share this time with you. Honestly, it's
our favorite time of the day where we get to
hang out together and talk about how the truth of
God's word can make a.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Huge difference in your life.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
And that's what we're going to hear from Richard in
a way that only he can do with words of hope, insight,
and humor. You may be stuck in traffic or stuck
in life. Either way, today's message is going to help
get you on the right track as you learn how
much God loves you right where you are. So let's
get right into today's talk. Here's Richard Ellis.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
The title today's message is undertow. Let me read your
definition for the word undertow. It's the current beneath the
surface that sets seaward or along the beats when waves
are breaking upon the shore. Another definition is an underlying
current force or tendency that is in opposition to what
is a parent. And the longer I live, the more

(00:59):
I talk talk to people as a pastor. And I
don't think it's limited just to me. I think anybody
who talks to people if they're honest when they talk
to you. It's one thing to pull everything together and
show up on a Sunday somewhere.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
It's one thing to pull it all together and.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Show up at a Bible study, maybe it's some prayer group,
maybe it's some lunch or gathering of Christians, and you know,
keep your mouth clean and not tell everybody what you're
really doing, what's really going on. But there's a whole
lot of time, a whole lot of hours spent in
our lives that are away from Christians, that are away
from anybody, frankly, and where it's our family, where it's

(01:35):
our friends, where it's our co workers. And the reason
so many times co workers are so shocked when someone
becomes a Christian their life genuinely changes is because they
live with you more than your family does sometimes and
they wonder what happened? Why don't you talk the way
you used to talk, and why don't you go with
this where you used to go and do what you
used to do and gossip the way you used to gossip,
or whatever.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
It is you used to do.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
But it seems that the more conversations I have and
forget talking to anybody else, just knowing myself, there is
like this constant pull on all of us advertising. You
can't turn on your TV, you can't open your mail,
you can't open the newspaper, you can't drive down the.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
Street and see billboards.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
I mean, we are bombarded with the world with temptation,
with this constant pull to go back.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
To be what we used to be, do what we
used to do.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
And we know in our heads it doesn't work supposedly,
but we still have this constant struggle, this constant tug
on us.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
Now.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
I don't care how strong you are, how long you've
been a Christian, how godly you are.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
Every day this enemy of ours.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
Seeks to steal, to kill, and to destroy. He's after
your life physically, he's after your family, he's after your children,
he's after everything you've got. I want to start in
March chapter four today, and we're going to read through
some verses in Mark and quite a few other ones.
If you don't know where all these things are in
the Bible, will be mostly in the New Testament.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Today.

Speaker 3 (03:03):
There's a table of contents in the front of your Bible.
You can go there and look up the name of
the book. You'll give you a page number. If you
don't have a Bible, let's look around. Make sure everybody's
got a Bible at once. One so we can follow
along here and see this stuff is really in the book.
There is help, and this God is not just passing
out tickets to heaven if you get the ticket, he
is providing the power to every day make wise decisions

(03:27):
and not go too deep. See, our challenge in this
process is somehow we have to be in the world
but not of the world at the same time. Somehow
we've got to be on the beach and when necessary,
hit the beach and go in the water and help
somebody out. But you got to be in it and
not of it. You got to be holy in an
unholy world. There's got to be some difference in our lives.

(03:49):
But it doesn't mean we retreat from the beach where
people are hurting and where they're being pulled in.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
Now, I'm not going to read you the whole story here.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
In Mark chapter four, but Jesus gives up parable about seeds,
so let's pick up. In verse fourteen. He explains this parable.
He says, the sower sows the word, and these are
the ones by the wayside where the word is sown.
When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the
word that was sown in their hearts. These, likewise are

(04:17):
the ones sown on stony ground, who, when they hear
the word, immediately receive it with gladness, and they have
no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward,
when tribulation or persecution arises for the word's sake, immediately
they stumble, They get sucked back out.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
The undertoe is too great.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
They can't take the heat, and they bow not to God,
but they bow to their desires and their fears, and
they're gone. Verse eighteen. He says, now these are the ones.
This is the second one I believe. Now these are
the ones who sow among thorns. They are the ones
who hear the word, and the cares of this world,
the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things

(05:00):
entering in choke the word and it becomes unfruitful. It's
the same thing that will happen right here today. It's
the same thing that will happen if you read your
Bible tomorrow morning. Some of it's going to fall on
some good ground. Some by the wayside, some and thorns,
some in good ground. Will see in a minute. But
this middle group here that falls in the thorns, the
cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the

(05:23):
desires for other things. The undertoe is too great. And
the Word of God calls to our minds, to our
hearts and says, no, do the right thing, be wise,
it's not worth it.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Don't go there.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
It's not going to pay off, it's not going to
be the right thing to do. And it just overwhelms us.
We say, I can't fight it anymore. The cares of
the world, deceitfulness of riches, the desire for other things.
They choke the word and it becomes unfruitful Verse twenty.
But these are the ones who sow on good ground.
Those who hear the word accept it and bear fruit.

(05:55):
Some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some one hundred. So it
is possible to hear the word and it not be
choked out, it not be lost. But what does it take.
You hear the word and you accept it. The last group,
they sew it falls on good ground. Those who hear
the word accept it and they bear fruit. It makes
a difference in their lives. Nobody out there is going

(06:18):
to tell you to do what God wants you to do.
There are very few people going to tell you to
stick to your guns and obey and trust and hang on.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
And do the right thing.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
And if you don't, surround yourself with people and get
a part of this church or some other church wherever
it is, and say, God, help me to keep people
around me, not to brainwash me, but to encourage me
and point me in the right direction.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
And when the undertow gets too great and.

Speaker 3 (06:41):
I'm go out to get sucked out, to see there's
some kind of buddy system where somebody knows where I
am and what I'm doing, and I don't get left
out there by myself. Go to John chapter six, Verse
sixty six of John six says simply from that time
many of his disciples went back and walked with him.
No more, they quit, They ditched. Then Jesus said to

(07:03):
the twelve, do you also.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Want to go away?

Speaker 3 (07:06):
Gave him the option, do you also want to go away?
Do you want to leave me? But Simon Peter answered him, Lord,
to whom shall we go? You have the words of
eternal life? Where are we going to go Jesus, we
got nothing to go back to. As strong as the
undertow is, as hard as it is to follow you,
as much as that will cost you, what are you

(07:26):
going to cast that in on?

Speaker 2 (07:27):
And go back to?

Speaker 3 (07:29):
Go to first Timothy chapter six, towards the back of
the New Testament, One Timothy chapter six, and let's pick
up with verse six. One Timothy six. Verse six says this,
And I'm going to read this stuff pretty slow, because
I don't want you just to say you read it
or saw it. But think about this. This is Paul
writing to a young guy named Timothy. He says, Now,
godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing

(07:53):
into this world, and it is certain we can carry
nothing out, and having food and clothing with thee, we
shall be content. You say, well, I don't have anywhere
to live, and it would be very harsh to say,
and do you have food?

Speaker 2 (08:08):
Do you have clothes?

Speaker 3 (08:10):
He says, be content. But those who desire to be
rich fall into temptation and a snare. Now is it wrong?
Is the point here of this passage? It's wrong to
be rich? No, if you spend your whole life, you
eat your whole life up, which most Americans, unfortunately, it seems,
to do trying to be rich. What is going to
happen to you? If you are blessed in your business,

(08:32):
and you'd make wise decisions and you end up rich,
but you're content with or without, you're gonna be okay.
But if you have made it your goal just to
be rich, what's going to happen? He says, Those who
desire to be rich fall in temptation and a snare,
and into many foolish and harmful lust, which drown men
in destruction and perdition. For the love of money, not money.

(08:54):
Don't misquote this to people. I hear this misquoted all
the time. You know, the Bible says money's the root
of all evil. It's not the root of all evil.
The love of money is the root of all kinds
of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith
in their greediness and pierced themselves through with many sorrows
Verse eleven. But you, o man of God, he says,
this is not you, Timothy, But you, O Man of God,

(09:16):
flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness,
fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal
life to what you are also called, and have confessed
the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
What is the fight of faith?

Speaker 3 (09:35):
Let me tell you what I think part of the
fight of faith is it's in the moment when you
are tempted and the devil says, over here, the seduction,
the lies, the enticement comes your way, and the world
screams and says, come out deeper. We're having a great
time out here, and you feel it at your feet,
and you.

Speaker 2 (09:52):
Are in the shallow water enough that when you feel
it at your feet, you hear the world calling.

Speaker 3 (09:57):
But the undertoe keeps pulling in your enough to step
back and say, you know what, God, I gotta fight
this because if I don't, I'll drown.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
I'll get sucked back in again.

Speaker 3 (10:07):
And so by faith, you say, God, it looks fun
out there, and they seem to be having a better
time than me.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
But I'm gonna.

Speaker 3 (10:13):
Step back to a safer place, and I'm gonna fight
with faith. And the faith is I know what I
see looks good, but what I know in my heart,
by faith, is that that's not going to turn into
a good thing, And though it may be exhilarating and exciting,
and the struggle may be enticing a little bit, but
once I get out there, I'm sunk and I know that.
So I'm fighting, and I'm gonna stay back in a

(10:35):
safe place. I don't care how strong you are. There
are currents, there is undertow out there that nobody can fight,
and why even mess with the thing? Go to Tewod
Timothy chapter four, And these are just simple, subtle things
in the scripture as you read through it and you
see it. But it's things that happen not just to

(10:55):
Jesus and John six sixty six in those verses, but
it's Paul and just in talking about what's going on
in Tewod Timothy four, verse nine, he says, be diligent
to come to me quickly, for Demus has forsaken me,
having loved this present world.

Speaker 2 (11:12):
One of his helpers, one of.

Speaker 3 (11:14):
His followers, one of the guys that had Paul with them,
Demus left. Why did Demus leave Paul? And it says here,
for Demus has forsaken me, having loved this present world,
and has departed for Thessala and Aika creasans for Galatia
Titus for Dalmatia, and it sounds like, though he focuses
on Demus, that they ditched, they left. We know clearly though,

(11:36):
that Demus left because he loved this present world. The guys,
I'm telling you, living the godly life is not the
easy thing to do. In fact, scripturally it is impossible.
You will not live a Christian life without Christ. And
if you think you're going to come in here and
get a hit on a Sunday morning and get juiced
up and walk out of here and go to lunch

(11:57):
or whatever you're going to do today and wake up tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (12:00):
And wing it and be just fine, you're kidding yourself.
You're gonna get sucked right out to see, because the.

Speaker 3 (12:07):
Temptations you're going to hit this afternoon, this night, it's
not even about tomorrow. And if we don't surround ourselves
with a community and with family and with bigger brothers
and sisters and someone to help us in this process
and keep us near it. See, if you don't have
enough sense to stay out of the deep water, you
need parents to go to the beach with you and
somebody to check on you. And the parents are supposed

(12:29):
to be smart enough not to go out there, you know,
with kids. Every once in a while, I put one
of my kids at the beach on my shoulders and
I go out. But you know what, there's a point
where it's not just my life at stake. I got
other little lives on my shoulders, climbing on me. They
can't touch the bottom even to feel the undertow.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
And when I start.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
Feeling us getting pulled, I gotta have enough sense to
take all of us back on the beach, then take
us all down.

Speaker 2 (12:51):
Look at first, Peter. A few pages to the right.

Speaker 3 (12:54):
Chapter four uses the example of Jesus here, of Christ
in his life and how he lived and what he did.
And I love this passage because it puts it in
such plain English, exactly what it is that we face,
even with our friends and the people around us. Verse
one of chapter four versus Peter. Therefore, since Christ suffered

(13:15):
for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the
same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh
has ceased from sin. You are not going to live
the Christian life and win without suffering. You say, well,
I don't want to suffer. You're gonna suffer either way.
Suffer for doing the right thing, not the wrong thing.

(13:36):
The Devil's way is pleasure now, pain forever. God's way
is a little pain. Now. Suffer now, but joy and
real pleasure from now on, if you'll just trust me
and obey me, so you suffer Verse two, that he
no longer should live the rest of his time in
the flesh for the lusts of men, but for.

Speaker 2 (13:56):
The will of God.

Speaker 3 (13:57):
Why spend the rest of your life live it in
the flesh when you can live for the will of God.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
Do the will of God.

Speaker 3 (14:03):
For we have spent enough of our past lifetime and
doing the will of the gentiles.

Speaker 2 (14:08):
Enough is enough.

Speaker 3 (14:08):
Basically, how long are you going to have to do
something stupid to realize it?

Speaker 2 (14:13):
It's stupid.

Speaker 3 (14:14):
We have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing
the will of the gentiles when we walked in lewdness,
LUs drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. You know what,
I'm gonna tell you a quick story. The other night,
the Mavericks played their last game and I was driving home.

(14:35):
You know, every once in a while you asked for something,
You're like, Okay, God, now I'm not like I'm pushing
for this. You know, it's not a life or death situation.
But you said to ask, So I'm gonna throw it
up there, like, if you really want me at that
Mavericks game, I'm.

Speaker 2 (14:48):
Willing to go.

Speaker 3 (14:51):
So I'm driving home and I'm thinking, well, you know,
is it enough just to tell God?

Speaker 2 (14:55):
You know? Are you supposed to be proactive?

Speaker 3 (14:56):
So I picked up my phone and I called this
guy and I said, I don't I know what you're doing,
what's up? But he says, you're of all people you
know this Maveris game. I thought, you know, take a shot.
He said, you're not gonna believe where I'm standing. I
said where? He says, I'm in line at the ticket
office to buy tickets for the game.

Speaker 2 (15:11):
I said, well, if you find one for me, that'd
be fine. If God wants me to go, I'll go.
Kind of thing. Turns out he didn't ended up going.

Speaker 3 (15:18):
He bought tickets, sold them, kept one for me, paid
for the whole deal, and said, I think God wants
you to go. Gave me the ticket. So I went
to the matter game by myself. I don't encourage that,
but I kind of wanted to be there. So I said, okay, God,
somehow you've worked this out for me to be here.
And it's not about this basketball game. So when you
keep your radar up and say why am I here?

(15:38):
So between periods, I just go down and walk, just
loop the deal, just walk the loop looking for people.
And I got down there and I found out why.
One of the reasons I was there a guy who
someone brought to one of our lord's suppers and got
pulled up on the beach for at least one night,
and he's probably a believer, and got sucked back to
see who I've been called, And almost every other week

(16:02):
for months, there he was, and he couldn't get away
from me. And sometimes guys, it's just the swimming out there.
It's the making contact and saying one more time, look
I'm here. If you're drowning, I'll help to get back.
You're not by yourself. We lost the game anyhow, So
it's a good thing I saw him. I look at

(16:24):
verse three again. We have spent enough of our past
lifetime in doing the will of the gentiles. At some
point that guy is gonna wake up and say, you
know what am I doing? All my partying is not
a party anymore. All this fun is not fun. There's
got to be a better way.

Speaker 2 (16:40):
I know there is.

Speaker 3 (16:41):
Maybe there's somebody who will helped me get back on track.

Speaker 2 (16:44):
Verse four.

Speaker 3 (16:45):
In regard to these things, the old way of living,
they think, who the gentiles, the people you used to
run with. They think it's strange that you do not
run with them, And the same flood of dissipation, speaking
evil of you, Well, what's up with you?

Speaker 2 (17:01):
What happened to you? What are you better than us? Now?
Can't party with us anymore?

Speaker 3 (17:07):
You think we're evil, We've got Satan in us, that
we're bad people. And now because you're doing the right thing,
they speak evil of you, that you're not out running
with them doing what they're doing. Verse five says they
will give an account to him capital hs, him who
is ready to judge the living and the dead. For
this reason, the gospel was preached also to those who

(17:28):
are dead, that they might be judged according to men
in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
They'll give an answer one day. First John chapter two.
Into your bible, keep going to the right before revelation.
First John two. This is John writing, and he addresses
a number of different people, and we'll get down to
where we're gonna look at for just a second.

Speaker 2 (17:48):
Here.

Speaker 3 (17:48):
First John chapter two, verse twelve. He says, I write
to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you
for his namesake. I write to you, fathers, because you
have known Him who is from the beginning. I write
to you, young men, because you have overcome the wicked one.
I write to you, little children, because you have known
the Father. I have written to you, fathers, because you

(18:08):
have known him who is from the beginning. I've written
to you, young men, because you are strong and the
word of God abides in you, and you have overcome
the wicked one. Look at these interesting descriptions of these
groups of people. There's a difference in children in verse twelve,
because your sins are forgiven you for his namesake, a
young child, and the faith knows that much. But look

(18:29):
up there at young men. What is the difference in
a child and a young man? Because you are strong
and the word of God abides in you, and you
have overcome the wicked one. That's how you know if
you're maturing in your faith, you are strong. The word
of God lives, abides in you, and you have overcome
the wicked one. Sin will not control your life at

(18:52):
some point Verse fifteen. Do not love the world or
the things in the world. If anyone loves the world,
the love of the Father is not in him. For
all that is in the world, And here he sums
it up in three categories, really kind of two categories.
All that is in the world, the lust of the flesh,
the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life

(19:13):
is not of the Father, but is of the world.
Sin is fulfilling a god given desire in an ungodly way.
There is nothing wrong with sex, there's nothing wrong with food,
there's nothing wrong with any of these things God created.
But it's when you start to fulfill godly desires in
an ungodly way, now you're in trouble. The lust of
the flesh, you got some of that. The lust of

(19:36):
the eyes. Just think about what you see and what
it makes you want. And if I had that and
the pride of life, what would the world be without pride.
It's what got the devil thrown out of heaven. He
couldn't stand being one of the created. He had to
be equal to the creator. And there's only one throne
for that all of these things, the lust of the flesh,

(19:58):
the lust the eyes, the pride of life is not
of the Father, but is of the world. And the
world is passing away, and the lust of it. But
he who does the will of God abides forever. All
those lusts, the flesh, the eyes of pride, all that's
going to go.

Speaker 2 (20:13):
But what's going to remain, he says, those who do.

Speaker 3 (20:16):
The will of God, they abide forever. Now you say, well,
how do I do this? Is there any hope for
me to win? Go back a few pages of First Corinthians,
Chapter ten, verse twelve. Therefore, let him who thinks he
stands take heed lest he fall. Now what's involved in that?
It's pride and spiritually. If you want to know how

(20:38):
old you are, two year old, say things like I
can do it by myself. So if you hear yourself
talking to God and someone warning you about the situation
you're in, he say, you know what, I can do
it by myself. Let him who thinks he stands take
heed lest he fall. Verse thirteen. No temptation has overtaken

(20:59):
you accept such as is common to men. But God
is faithful. Now, what is the promise here who will
not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able,
but with the temptation will also make the way of
escape that you may be able to bear it. If
you want out, there's a way out. If you pray

(21:19):
for wisdom, he'll give you wisdom. If you pray for strength,
he'll give you strength. It doesn't mean you won't be tempted.
And by the way to be tempted is not to sin.
To sin is to sin one thought about something that
is not necessarily a sin.

Speaker 2 (21:32):
Dwelling on that and taking off on it.

Speaker 3 (21:34):
Now you're in so the thought comes and you say, God,
I don't want to go there, and he says, okay,
here's the way out. Praise me, thank me, read the scriptures, pray,
sing a song, get out of here, flee it, whatever
you have to do, get away from this situation.

Speaker 2 (21:48):
There is a way out.

Speaker 3 (21:50):
It's not more than you can take. Memorize this. It
is a promise. It's a guarantee. When you're in that
place this afternoon, tonight, tomorrow, there is a way out.
You want the way out, you say, well, I never
can find that way out. You know, part of it
is you don't want that way out. The lifeguard calls,
your parents, call, everybody calls, says come back in. It's

(22:10):
getting late, the waves are getting bigger, the undertow is
going to be too great. Get back in here, or
we're gonna have to risk somebody's life to come rest.
You say no, I'm okay. I spent my summers at
the pool. I'm okay. This ain't the pool. This is
the ocean, and it eats people.

Speaker 1 (22:27):

One of the two men or three men in my life.
A guy named Sumner Wip who was here a few
months ago, tells his story that while he was at
the beach in Jacksonville, Florida, one summer, he said, I
saw a lifeguard suddenly.

Speaker 2 (23:19):
Jump to his feet in his tower.

Speaker 3 (23:21):
He took the red Cross flag out of its standard
and waved it frantically so they could see him at
the main lifeguard station. He then threw it to the ground,
jumped down, grabbed a life boy, and rushed out into
the water. With strong strokes, he swam toward a man
waving for help. In a few seconds, sirens wailed, an
ambulance came up, and three other guards swam out to help.

(23:42):
They rescued the man and gave him artificial respiration. Scores
gathered around. All were deeply moved as the man was revived.
The same scene was repeated several times that day, for
the undertow was unusually strong. Late that afternoon, Sumner says,
I went to the main station to say thanks, says
a private citizen, for the dedication of these men. When

(24:03):
I walked into the station, I was struck by a
sign on the wall in large read letters which read
if in doubt go, If in doubt go, It struck
me that this ought to be on the wall of
every church and on the table of every heart as
we see the multitudes around us and read the command.

Speaker 2 (24:23):
Of God to go.

Speaker 3 (24:25):
Now, sometimes we've got to pray for people that'll have
enough sense to not go too deep and be aware
that there's trouble. But at some point, God, the Holy
Spirit is going to prompt your heart in my heart.
And whether it's walking around in circles at some Maverick
game looking for people and God showing you one, or
picking up the phone and calling somebody, or going to

(24:46):
see them wherever they are and finding them, it's not
bad advice when in doubt go and thank God that
somebody does it in my life and in your life
and doesn't let me get sucked out to see. But
God helped to be a part of this process for
somebody else.
