Speaker 1 (00:00):
Scripture has every principle needed for a well ordered life.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Doctor Tony Evans says, the Bible isn't out of date,
rather it's complete.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
There is no need in the life of the Christian
that has gone unaddressed in the Bible.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
This is the alternative broadcast featuring the timeless Biblical teachings
from the archives of doctor Tony Evans. In a world
overflowing with advice, it's easy to overlook the one source
that actually works. Today, doctor Evan shows how Scripture gives
everything we need for wisdom, joy and direction. Let's listen
(00:39):
in as he explores how God's Word has the ability
to meet the deepest needs of our lives.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
If you go to a bookstore, you will notice a
number of titles that may catch your eye. In light
of our series which has been on the Glorious Scripture,
a number of books contain the word.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
In their title.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
For example, there is the Vegetarian Bible, there is the
Chocolate Bible, there is the Hunter's Bible, there is the
fashion Bible.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
But why do they do it?
Speaker 1 (01:16):
They do it because the word Bible is associated with
the final word on a subject. And today I want
to talk a moment about the comprehensive nature of Scripture.
What I mean by that is that the Bible is
totally comprehensive in its ability to address every need in
(01:43):
your life. There is no need in the life of
the Christian that has gone unaddressed in the Bible. The
Bible never spends time defending the existence of God. It
simply says a fool has said there is no God.
In other words, you have to be a fool to
(02:05):
conclude there.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
Is no God.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
You have to be educated out of the existence of God,
because it's natural when you look at the world around you,
that somebody bigger than that must be responsible for it.
That leads him the verses seven through fourteen, where he
makes six statements about the sufficiency of scripture or its
(02:31):
comprehensive nature to address.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
All of life.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
Number one, the law of the Lord is perfect, restoring
the soul. The word perfect means whole or complete, or
something that is comprehensive. When he says the law of
the Lord is perfect, he is saying that Scripture lacks nothing.
(03:00):
It is complete in its revelation of divine truth. And
while God has not told you everything, He's told you
everything you need to know. The word restore means to convert, revive,
or refresh. In other words, the word of God can
(03:21):
change you. It can change you, it can make things different.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
Many of us have seen all furniture restored, brought back
to life. We've seen broken things repaired. We've seen all
things made new.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
What he's saying is that this book is so powerful
that it is able to take your soul.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
Now, what's your soul.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Your soul is the essence of your life. Your soul
is beyond your body. Your soul goes to who you
are as a being. Most of us stop with what
we do as a bee, and that brings in our body.
But we only do what we do because we are
who we are. He's saying, the Scripture can change who
(04:11):
you are, which will automatically affect what you do. The
Scripture can restore or give you back, your soul. The
Hebrew word for soul is pronounced nefish, and nefish refer
to the total person and God's ability to turn you
inside out, to fix what's wrong or broken or bruised
(04:33):
or beaten or battered on your inside. Many of us
who look wonderful outside are scard inside. We've got scars
on our souls. They've been hidden by our bodies, and
even when we're feeling okay outside, we still feel the
(04:53):
ache and the pain of the inside. He says, Scripture
is so complete that it is able to restore, or
revive or heal your inside. Paul went so far as
to say, though my outwood man decays day by day, he.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
Says, my inward man is renewed.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
In other words, the older you get, the younger you
should be getting.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
It's okay to be all on the outside.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
Time will guarantee that, but according to the word of God,
you should be getting younger on the inside when the
Scripture is free to have its way with you, that
it restores or heals the soul. Why because it is comprehensive.
(05:48):
There are two reasons I encourage my youngest son, Jonathan,
during his high school days of playing football at two reasons.
Reason number one, I love football. Reason number two, I
didn't want to pay for college, so I felt like
I could express my love for football and save money
(06:12):
at the.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
Same time.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
If he would get good enough to get a college scholarship. Well,
he got a college scholarship, and I got my praise
on I mean because.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
I was happy.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
They pay for his classes, they pay for his books,
they pay for his food, they pay for a place
to live. It is a full it's called a full
somebody say full. And so it's a full scholarship where
the school takes responsibility for his agitation.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
They pick up the tab for his education.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
It's a comprehensive agenda. It would be a shame to
have that much investment not to.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
Be taken advantage of it. Am I right?
Speaker 1 (07:10):
In other words, when you know the value of a
comprehensive scholarship, what you are to do is take advantage
of it.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Maximize it.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
You can't have all this and not take advantage of it.
It is the comprehensive word of God. He says, the
scripture will restore your soul. Now, if the scripture will
restore your soul, that means the loss will save you money,
(07:48):
because that means you don't have to go beyond it
to get your soul fixed.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
Right.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
Second thing, he says the testimony another way of saying
scripture the testimony of.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
The Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
Speaker 1 (08:17):
When he says scripture is sure, he's referring to scripture
as trustworthy. In other words, it's witness. Testimony sure means
to give testimony or to give witness. It's true about
who God is, what God says. It's a reliable document
(08:39):
and therefore provides a sure or solid foundation upon which
life is to be built. It's sure, you can bank
on it. Jesus said in Matthew seven about two men
who built houses, one built on a rock, one built
on sand.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
One foundation was sure, the other was phle Scripture is sure.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Many of our lives often are built on philosophies that
are not sure.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
How we were raised, which wasn't sure?
Speaker 1 (09:10):
Our friends who are as messed up as we are,
they not sure, he says. Scripture is sure. That is reliable.
Andy says, it will make the simple wise. What is
the simple in the Biblical worldview? What does it mean
(09:33):
to be simple? Well, he doesn't mean as sometimes somebody
lacks intellect. The simple person in the Bible was the
person who didn't know how to make good choices. It
was the person whose judgment ability or deserning ability was flawed.
They didn't know how to make choices. They didn't know
(09:55):
how to set the right boundaries, They didn't know how
to position themsel Els under God correctly. They were called simple,
not because they were stupid or lack intellect, but they
lacked the ability to make judgments. How many of I
sitting here tonight, if we knew then what we know
(10:17):
now would have chosen differently. In other words, it was
a judgment problem. We didn't calculate the data correctly, We
didn't investigate it correctly. We were maybe too immature at
that point in our lives, and so we were unsure,
and therefore we could not make judgments.
Speaker 3 (10:39):
What he's saying is the scripture will.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
Save you that heartache and save you that headache, because
what it will do is give you the ability to
desern because God has already taken in all the idiosyncrasies,
all the elements, and has already rendered a judgment on it.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
When doctor Evans returns in a moment, he'll share a
relatable example of how ignoring divine wisdom plays out in
everyday life. First, though, we are about halfway through Tony's
powerful sermon series called The Glory of God's Word. This
ten part collection highlights the uniqueness, power, and divine origin
of scripture and how embracing its truth can reshape every
(11:21):
area of your life. The series includes content we won't
have time to present on the air, so we're making
the full length versions of all the messages available to
you as our gift when you support the Ministry of
the Alternative with a generous donation, and as an added bonus,
we are also including Tony's book, The Transforming Word. It's
(11:42):
a guide to moving beyond just reading the Bible to
actually receiving and applying its life changing truth. Request both

(12:03):

the day or night. I'll repeat that contact information for you.
After the second part of today's lesson, here's doctor Evans
with more on how scripture is sufficient.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
Have you gotten frustrated at the children because they won't
listen and you know they're wrong, and they argue in
like they write.
Speaker 3 (12:28):
You know, they think they know they're right, but you
know they ever lived long enough, you know you know
that that's not a wise choice. It says it makes
wise the simple.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
What is wisdom. Wisdom is the ability to make right choices.
It is the ability to live life skillfully. It is
the ability to choose wisely. The Word of God is
the perfect document for folks who don't know what to do.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
See folks who already know.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
What to do, don't need the Bible or don't use it.
Better to be simple and need the Word than be
brilliant and not. The word of the Lord is a pathfinder.
It will lead you down the correct way to go.
It will show you the right road. Will you go
(13:19):
down the biblically prescribed path to get to where God
wants you to go.
Speaker 3 (13:26):
You'll be happy you took that road.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
He goes on verse eight, the commandment of the Lord again,
the commandments of the written Word of God. The commandment
of the Lord is pure enlightening the eyes.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
It will clear.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
Up the dark things, the things that are hard to
figure out. Jesus prayed in Matthew eleven to his father,
and he said, Father, hide these truths from the intelligence,
that is, people who have their own sight, and reveal
them to babies, to.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
People who are dependent.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
Open up their eyes so that they can see. So
you get to see things as they really are. Because
scripture enlightens your eyes. It gives you divine vision. The
fear of the Lord is clean. The word fear here
is again used referring to response to God's word.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
The fear of the Lord is clean.
Speaker 1 (14:26):
God confays his truth without flaw or without blemish.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
Psalm twelve, verse six says God's word is flawless.
Speaker 1 (14:35):
He says that the fear of the Lord is pure,
enduring forever.
Speaker 3 (14:40):
The Bible is permanent.
Speaker 1 (14:42):
It's unchanging, and watch, this is always relevant. It'll never
go out of date. It'll never go out of print.
It just gets translated in the language after language after language.
No book is so more in the history of publications.
So it says it will endure forever. It is a
permanent record of the revelation of God. It always has
(15:06):
been sufficient. It is sufficient, It will always be sufficient. Man,
if you took philosophy in college, philosophy is interesting because
philosophy is learning the world views.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
Of men, how men look at the world. And then
you know, you get to choke of God.
Speaker 1 (15:24):
And you study existentialism and people be talking deep too.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
Oh did you hear him? Philosophies? You know, and it's
always changing.
Speaker 1 (15:33):
The Bible talks about people ever learning and never coming
into the knowledge of the truth.
Speaker 3 (15:40):
Love to go to school, don't know nothing.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
Scripture is the only world view that will last forever
because it's rooted in an unchangeable reality God, who has
recorded that reality for us. In Scripture, he goes on
the judgments verse nine of the Lord are true. They
are righteous all together. Judgment means the ordinances or divine
(16:13):
verdicts from the bench of the supreme judge of the earth.
Speaker 3 (16:18):
The Bible is the standard.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
He says, of judging life, of leading life, and of
evaluating life. Why can it be trusted because the judgments
of the Lord are true, We've already dealt with truth.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
It's a fixed standard. It's not up for negotiation or debate, and.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
When applied, it produces comprehensive righteousness in the life of
the believer who accepts it. It is the inexhaustible source
of truth, and when truth is applied, you become right.
Speaker 3 (17:01):
The Bible pronounces a curse on anyone who.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
Adds to it or takes from it, because you're messing
with the revelation of God.
Speaker 3 (17:13):
So if the Bible is this comprehensive.
Speaker 1 (17:19):
How should you view it? What kind of priority should
it have? Notice what he says in verse ten, they
are more desirable than gold, Yes, than much fine gold.
First thing he wants you to know is anything this
precious is more important than you'll paycheck.
Speaker 3 (17:43):
Gold is your money.
Speaker 1 (17:47):
I would dare to think that many of us view
the Bible as more important than our paycheck.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
Very few of us look at the Bible that way.
That's not how David looked at it. And David was
a wealthy man. He wasn't sitting home reading his Bible
all day.
Speaker 1 (18:05):
He's a very wealthy man. But when it came to
what was valuable, he said, your word is. When Paul
was in prison getting ready to die, he said word
back man. You would have thought he would have said,
he said, Timothy, when you come, bring me a.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
Blanket because I'm cold in prison. It's cold here. Bring
me a blanket and bring me the scriptures, because right man,
in this situation, I need something divine.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
When Christians are on that death bed, first thing they
wanted somebody reading the Bible. It's not only valuable in death,
it's valuable in life because it's written for life. He says,
it's more precious than my paycheck or anything that the
paycheck can buy. So it's more valuable, well than anything this.
Speaker 3 (19:01):
World offers that is not just a book sitting on
your shelf is more valuable.
Speaker 1 (19:05):
It is the reality of God's revelation, which is incorporated
in scripture, that is more valuable. Notice how else valuable
it is. He says, it's sweeter than honey and the
drippings of the honeycomb.
Speaker 3 (19:20):
It's better than your desert because you desert.
Speaker 1 (19:25):
It got sugar in it, all right, makes it sweet?
He says, this thing is sweet. Have you ever read
a verse that got sweet to you? Or read a
passage that was sweet to you? Now, how do you
know when something sweet? I'll tell you how you know
something sweet and taste? You can taste it. See that's
(19:49):
why the Bible says, taste of the Lord and see
that he is good.
Speaker 3 (19:56):
See.
Speaker 1 (19:57):
I'm not talking about reading about although reading, of course
is part of that's the way you can read what
God has said.
Speaker 3 (20:04):
I'm talking about you tasting it. Some people will call
it feelings.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
Experiencing it. So you don't just want to say I
read my two chapters today. You want to say, I
experienced God while reading my two chapters today. You want
to taste the sugar. He wants you to taste it.
For David, the word of God wants something to be
experienced as well as known. Now, it's true even if
(20:32):
you don't experience it, but you don't just want the
fact of it. You want the reality of it. You
want it to take on life for you. Of course,
that's the role of the Holy Spirit to animate it
in your experience. And what he says is that that's.
Speaker 3 (20:48):
What the scripture will do. It will be a taste
for you.
Speaker 1 (20:50):
More Over, by them, your servant is worn, and keeping
them there is great reward. Who can desern his error?
That quit me of my hidden faults, things that are
deep down inside that are flaws. I'm gonna need your
word to help me with those. Keep back your servant
from presumptuous sins, sins you plan to do. Do not
(21:13):
let the rule over me that I shall be blameless
and shall be acquitted of great transgression. And then he
says this famous closing verse, Let the words in my
mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in
thy sight, oh Lord, my rock and my redeems. He
says the word of God is sufficient.
Speaker 3 (21:33):
It can satisfy the slow, it can quench the thirst.
Speaker 1 (21:40):
You get a lot of cake mixes and they say
all the ingredients say here, don't mess with it.
Speaker 3 (21:45):
You'll mess up the product.
Speaker 4 (21:48):
And many of you remember, any of you use spaghetti saws,
Prago Okay, Prago spaghetti sauce. They used to have a
commercial about Prego spaghetti sauce. The commercial would simply say
the man would come on and say it's in there, right,
(22:11):
because they would ask doesn't have tomatoes and he says
it's in there. Doesn't have Italian.
Speaker 1 (22:20):
Sausage, it's in there. Or does it have basil it's
in there? Or does it have guarding it's in there,
doesn't have pepper, it's in there. I'm going somewhere. David
is saying scripture is comprehensive. My life is falling apart.
Speaker 3 (22:46):
It's in there. I'm worried. It's in there. I'm losing
my mind. It's in there.
Speaker 1 (22:54):
I don't know how I'm gonna pay my fill is
in there. I found out I.
Speaker 3 (22:59):
Got terminal care. That's the if in there. I found
out having conflict with the neighbor.
Speaker 1 (23:04):
If in there, because the Bible is totally comprehensive to
address every need because it is the absolute word of God.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
