Speaker 1 (00:05):
As the events of the Tribulation unfold in Revelation and
you try to comprehend the devastation of your earthly home,
do you wonder what's happening in Heaven during that time?
Today on Turning Point, doctor David Jeremiah lifts our eyes
heavenward for a glimpse of the stark contrast from his
series Escape the Coming Night. Here's David to introduce today's message,
(00:29):
Woe on Earth, worship in Heaven.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Hi friends, thank you for joining us today. The Book
of Revelation is sometimes like split screen on television. On
one side, you see a picture of what's happening on
the Earth, and on the other side, you see what's
happening in Heaven. And that's true in today's lesson. While
everything is so awful on this earth during the tribulation period,
in heaven, God's people are worshiping. They really are, And
(00:54):
we're going to see both aspects of this in today's lesson.
As we open our Bibles once again to chapter eleven.
During the month of June, we're making available as our
resource a very special creation of the Turning Point team.
They've gone through things that I've written, things that I've
said over these many years and put together a quote book.
(01:14):
It's pretty amazing. Over three hundred quotes taken from published
works topics like faith, trials, purpose, hope, encouragement, commitment. Three
sections of the book your personal faith, your Christian walk,
and your future hope. This book is yours for a
gift of any amount to Turning Point. It is a
very very nice resource. When you ask for it, be
(01:36):
sure to send your gift right away and say I've
sent my gift in June. Please send me the quote book.
Please send me in the words of David Jeremiah, and
we'll have it on it's way to you. We just
got our supply from the printer and we're so excited
to be able to share it with you.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
We think it'll bring.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Blessing to your life and add value to your walk
with Christ. So once again, when you send your gift,
please ask for your cop of this month's resource. Now
here for the final edition of Turning Point during this
week is the Friday edition. Woe on Earth Worship in Heaven.
Speaker 4 (02:13):
The fifth chapter of the Book of Revelation began the
discussion of the Tribulation in detail. A seven sealed book
was found in the hand of God heaven was searched
for someone who was worthy to open it and remove
the seals, unrolling the scroll and revealing the details of
(02:35):
the Tribulation period. The lion of the tribe of Judah
was found, who came and taking the book, began to
remove the seals, and as each seal was removed, more
of the wrath of God upon this evil planet was unfolded.
When the first seal was removed, a white horse appeared,
and on it the anti Christ, who was the great
(02:57):
imitator of Christ himself. When the second seal was removed,
a red horse was viewed, symbolizing the war and the
rumors of wars that would accompany the beginning of the
tribulation period. When the third seal was removed, a black
horse rides across the page, signifying the famine that will
(03:18):
come when the shortage of food takes place during the
beginning of Sorrows. When the fourth seal was removed, a
pale horse rode across the stage, symbolizing death and reminding
us in the text that that particular seal will cause
one fourth of the population of the earth to be killed.
(03:39):
The fifth seal was opened, and we saw martyrdom the
souls under the altar. The sixth seal was opened, and
there was an earthquake, and the sun was darkened and
the stars fell. Between the opening of the sixth and
the seventh seal there was a brief lull, a pause,
a parentheses, and in that parenthesis we were entered to
(04:00):
the ceiling of the one hundred and forty four thousand.
As we have learned in our study of the Book
of Revelation, before God's final judgment, there is always one
last warning and one last evidence of mercy. Finally, the
seventh seal is opened, and when it is opened, it
reveals seven angels with seven trumpets, and the trumpet judgments begin.
(04:23):
The first trumpet is sounded, and as the noise is heard,
hail and fire and blood, and one third of the
foliage and all of the grass is gone. The second
trumpet is sounded, and a mountain burning and fire are
cast into the sea, and the third of the sea
is turned into blood, and the third of the sea
creatures die, and the third of the ships are destroyed.
(04:46):
And the third trumpet sounds, and the great star Wormwood
falls out of heaven, and one third of the fresh
water is destroyed, and the fourth trumpet is sounded, and
one third of the sun is smitten, and one third
of the moon is smitten, and of the stars. And
the fifth trumpet is sounded, and a star falls, and
the key to the bottomless pit is revealed, and all
(05:09):
of the demons are let loose, and the sixth trumpet
is sounded, and four angels are loosed at the river Euphrates,
and one third of the remaining world population is killed.
And once again between the sixth and the seventh trumpet,
there is a lull, a brief parenthesis. And we have
just studied that the Angel stands on the earth and
(05:30):
the sea, the Angel Jehovah, the Lord himself. The little
Book is opened, and John is told to eat that
book so he can prepare himself to preach the judgment
of God that is yet to come. And then the
two witnesses are sent forth upon this earth, and with
their miracles, they are the instruments that God uses to
(05:52):
give one additional opportunity to those who have yet to
receive Christ. Now the seventh trumpet is about to blow.
If you look in your bibles at the eleventh chapter
and verse fifteen, you will discover that the parentheses between
the two trumpets is finished, and the seventh angel sounds,
and there were great voices in heaven. The transition between
(06:16):
our last study and our current study is written for us.
In verse fourteen of the eleventh chapter, Notice the second
woe is passed, and behold the third woe cometh quickly.
The second woe is passed, the last of the seven
trumpets is about to sound. It will announce the outpouring
(06:36):
of the seventh vials of God's wrath. Just as we
learned at the very beginning, the telescopic judgments.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
Of God are in play.
Speaker 4 (06:46):
The first sixth seals and the seventh seal then contains
the seventh trumpets. The first sixth trumpets and the seventh
trumpet contains the seventh vials, and the telescopic judgments of
God are now in view. As we near the middle
to the end of the tribulation, we understand that the
Lord is not officially crowned Lord of Lords and King
(07:09):
of Kings until he has defeated all of his enemies
at the Battle of Armageddon, which is not until later
on in the Book of Revelation. The heaven acquires here
in the eleventh chapter, which we read about as they
worship God, sound forth the praises of the Lord. As
they worship him as the Lord, God Almighty, he is
(07:30):
worshiped for his titles, He is worshiped for his triumphs.
As the theme of this hymn of worship goes forward,
it is like a final crescenda to the entire process
of judgment which we have witnessed. We have watched the seals,
we have heard the trumpets. We are now ready for
that last and final outpouring of judgment from God upon
(07:53):
this earth, which is symbolized in the vile judgments, which
we are going to study later. Now, what is going
on on hearing these four verses is most interesting because
it is once again a preview of things to come.
I personally believe that the record of the Book of
Revelation is so dark and so very difficult for us
(08:14):
to come to understand. It is so bleak, so abysmal,
that we're not for God's grace to show us a
little bit of his wonderful future plans.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
We would never make it through the book.
Speaker 4 (08:26):
If you had to start at chapter five and go
all the way through to chapter nineteen and never be
given any kind of hope that there was anything other
than the dark judgments.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
For this world. You would get discouraged.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
But every once in a while God just puts in
a little vignette of what's to come.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
And that's what this is. It is like.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
Instead of a flashback, it is like a fore view
of what God has planned for those who are His.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
Now.
Speaker 4 (08:53):
The first thing you will notice in the fifteenth verse
is the announcement of the kingdom, and the seventh Angel sound,
and there were great voices in heaven saying, the kingdoms
of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord
and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.
Handel chose this particular verse as a part of the
(09:15):
text for his famous Hallelujah chorus. This is the official
proclamation of the coronation of the king. The details of
the transfer of power to Messiah are to be described
in the rest of this book. This has not actually
happened yet as we read this section. It will not
happen until the events of chapters twelve through eighteen take place.
(09:39):
But this is the announcement of it. This is the
announcement of the kingdom. The word kingdoms that is here
in the text is translated by the plural word kingdoms,
and it ought not be That is an inaccurate translation.
According to most scholars. The word should be singular. There
aren't many kingdoms. There's just one kingdom right now. That
(10:00):
kingdom is in control of Satan. Literally, the text should read,
and the kingdom of this world has become the kingdom
of our Lord and of his Christ. Some folks are
really frightened and surprised to discover that the kingdom of
this world does not belong to Christ, that it is
not in his authority right now, it belongs to Satan.
(10:20):
Satan is in charge of this world. In John twelve
thirty one, he's called the prince of this world. The
same word is used of him in John fourteen thirty
and John sixteen eleven. In fact, in Matthew twelve twenty six,
we read, and if Satan cast out Satan, he is
divided against himself, how then shall his kingdom stand?
Speaker 3 (10:43):
There?
Speaker 4 (10:43):
The word is used of Satan himself. This world is
the kingdom of Satan. Christ and God are not in
charge of this world right now. They have the ultimate
authority and sovereignty over it. But obviously the Lord is
not ruling this world today. If this is all there is,
we are in deep trouble. The Lord has yet to
(11:04):
take control, but one of these days he will. And
what the Book of Revelation is all about, it is
the gradual taking back of this world by the King
of kings. It is the purging out of the evil
that is in the world, until ultimately he can come
and rule and reign on this earth as the righteous
Lord of lords and King of kings. Daniel the Prophet
(11:27):
saw that in his prophecy in the Old Testament. If
you get a chance, go back and read chapters two
and three. In chapters six and seven, Daniels saw by
way of prophecy that the kingdom of this world was
passing down through the ages from the various kingdoms that
had ruled the world, until ultimately there is a stone
(11:49):
not touched or cut with hands, that rolls off of
the mountain, and it crushes all the kingdoms, and that
becomes the Mountain of God, which is the Kingdom of
Jesus Christ.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
That's what Daniel said.
Speaker 4 (12:01):
So in the fifteenth verse, we are given reason to
believe that the coronation of the King is not far
in the distance, And the kingdoms of this world are
become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ,
and he shall reign forever and ever.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
That's the announcement of the kingdom.
Speaker 4 (12:18):
Now notice verses sixteen and seventeen the acclamation of the king.
And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God
on their seats, fell upon their faces and worshiped God, saying,
we give thee thanks, O, Lord, God Almighty, which art
and west and art to come, because thou hast taken
to thee thy great power and has reigned. If you
(12:41):
have been listening in our study of the Book of Revelation,
you know that throughout the book the question has been
asked more than once, How long Lord, before you do this?
How long do we have to wait before you come
and take your kingdom? The souls under the altar are
asking the question, Lord, when are you going to bring
revenge upon those who have so mistreated us?
Speaker 3 (13:04):
How long?
Speaker 4 (13:06):
In the praise of the four and twenty Elders helps
us to understand that at time at least in the
prophecy has come, the elders leave their own thrones notice,
and they fall down in worship before God's throne. These
elders represent the resurrected, raptured, taken away, transfigured saints in heaven,
(13:27):
and they rejoice because they see their king beginning to reign.
If you go back to the fifth chapter, you will
see a very similar scene, for it has happened before
the announcement of the kingdom and the acclamation of the king. Now,
notice the anticipation of the end verse eighteen. And the
(13:47):
nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the
time of the dead, that they should be judged, and
that thou shouldst give reward unto thy servants, the prophets,
and to the saints, and them that fear them name
small and great, and should just destroy them which destroy
the earth.
Speaker 3 (14:05):
Now, if you take that verse and try.
Speaker 4 (14:07):
To locate it, you're going to really be in trouble,
because in that one verse of scripture events are described
that are more than one thousand years apart, and they're
spoken of in that one verse like they happen one
right after the other. Sometimes people who read the Bible
do not understand this principle of Bible prophecy, that sometimes
(14:28):
two events are put together in the same verse that
look like they happen bang bang, just like this, but
there is a long period of time between those events
taking place. Someone once explained it to me like this,
that it is like traveling in a mountainous area, and
you are distance from the mountains is great, and as
(14:49):
you look out into the horizon, you see what appears
to be one gigantic mountain peak. But as you get
nearer to that mountain peak, you discover the closer you
get to it, that it's not one, but it's two,
perhaps even three, And they have from the distance all
merged into one. But as you grow closer to it,
you see that there's a great valley between the two peaks,
(15:11):
and it's not just one, but it's two or three. Now,
the Bible is filled with illustrations like that. Turn back
in your bibles to the Book of Isaiah Isaiah chapter
sixty one. And in Isaiah chapter sixty one, in verse two,
there is a prophecy from Isaiah the prophet which literally
(15:32):
spans all of the time between the first and second
coming of Christ in one verse without any explanation at all.
Now watch what happens in Isaiah sixty one two. Let's
go back and read the first verse to get the setting.
The spirit of the Lord God is upon me because
the Lord God had appointed me to preach good tidings
unto the meek. He has sent me to bind up
(15:54):
the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and
the opening of the prison to them that are bound.
Now watch this second verse to proclaim the acceptable year
of the Lord and the day of vengeance of our God.
Now what is the difference between the acceptable year of
the Lord and the day of vengeance of our God.
(16:15):
The only difference is the difference between when Christ came
as a baby and when he comes again as a king.
The entire age in which you and I live is
the comma between these two phrases.
Speaker 3 (16:28):
Do you know that?
Speaker 4 (16:29):
Look down in the second verse to proclaim the acceptable
year of the Lord. That's when Jesus came the first time,
and the day of vengeance of our God that's when
he's coming the second time.
Speaker 3 (16:40):
And where are we? We're the comma, That's all we
are in that verse.
Speaker 4 (16:45):
The whole age of grace is wrapped up in that
one punctuation point. To illustrate that more fully, the Lord
refers to this passage one time while he's preaching. Now
I want you to turn in your bibles to that passage.
In Life chapter four, the Lord himself is teaching at Nazareth,
(17:05):
and notice he is quoting the very passage we have
just read from Isaiah. Now let's read, beginning at verse sixteen.
And Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up.
And as his custom was, he went into the synagogue
on the Sabbath day and stood up for to read.
And there was delivered unto him the book of the
prophet Isaiah. And when he had opened the book, he
(17:26):
found the place where it is written, which we have
just read from Isaiah sixty one. The spirit of the
Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to
preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent me
to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives,
and recovering of the site to the blind, to set
at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable
(17:46):
year of the Lord. Now go back if you've still
got your place in Isaiah sixty one. And notice that
Jesus stopped quoting in the very center of verse two,
didn't he He didn't even finish the verse, said that
he had been sent to preach the acceptable year of
the Lord, but he didn't add the rest of the verse,
(18:07):
which has to do with the day of vengeance of
our God. You say, why, well, keep reading and look
for and you'll discover. And he closed the book, and
he gave it again to the minister, and he sat down,
and the eyes of all of them that were in
the synagogue were fastened on him, and he began to say,
unto them, listen carefully, this day is this scripture fulfilled
(18:28):
in your ears?
Speaker 3 (18:30):
What scripture was fulfilled in their ears? The day of the.
Speaker 4 (18:33):
Acceptable year of the Lord? Jesus had come. That's what
the prophet said. And there he was. Had he read
the rest of the second verse, he wouldn't have been
able to say, this day is this scripture fulfilled in
your ears? Because it wasn't fulfilled yet. It wasn't time
for the vengeance of our God, was it? You know
who the best expositor and the best interpreter that ever
(18:53):
lived was Jesus Christ. He never made a mistake, He
never quoted more of a verse than he should, and
he never misapplied it. He took that one verse and
he applied the first part of it to his first coming,
and he left the last part of it off because
it wasn't yet to come until that which we're talking
about in revelation.
Speaker 3 (19:10):
Isn't that an amazing thing?
Speaker 4 (19:12):
The whole prophecy in one verse, spanning thousands of years.
Let me show you one other illustration of that from
the New Testament that you will recognize in First Corinthians,
chapter fifteen. Here we have given to us all of
the listings of the resurrections of the future. One Corinthians fifteen.
I'm going to read in the time elements, and I
(19:33):
want you to watch this carefully. Christ now is giving
the order of the resurrections. And if you read this
not knowing what we're talking about, you would think these
happened just like this.
Speaker 3 (19:42):
One right after the other.
Speaker 4 (19:44):
Now watch what happened as an Adam all die, Even
so Christ shall all be made alive. But every man
in his own order Christ the first fruits. And two
thousand years later they that are Christ that is coming
at least two thousand all right afterward day that are
Christ is coming. Then cometh the end. After the thousand
(20:07):
year reign, then cometh the end. Now look back at
that verse and let me read it for you this way.
Every man in his own order Christ the first fruits. Afterward,
by about two thousand years, they that are Christ that
is coming. Then after the thousand year reign cometh the end.
In that one verse, that is literally one right after
(20:27):
the other in terms of how it appears in the verse,
there are great time spaces that are in between each statement.
Now go back to the Book of Revelation and the
eleventh chapter, and let me explain to you that that's
what's going on in the eighteenth verse. Here in the
eighteenth verse, we have a very clear outline of everything
that's going to happen in the rest of the Book
(20:48):
of Revelation, but it is spaced out by years, by decades.
If you will notice, the eighteenth verse says, and the
nations were angry, and thy wrath has come, and the
time of the dead, that they should be judged, and
that thou shouldst give reward to thy servants, the prophets,
and to the saints in them that fear thy name,
(21:09):
small and great, and should hast destroy them which destroy
the earth. Now, if you read that verse, you might
think that all is going to happen on one day.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
That's a busy day. That's not all going to happen
on one day.
Speaker 4 (21:21):
It's not even going to happen in the same decades,
not going to happen in the same century. Those events
are spread out over a long period of time, still
to happen in the Book of Revelation. Now let's take
them one at a time. Number One, God's wrath against
the nations. This is talking about God's judging of the
nations that are angry at him. It is a fulfillment
of Psalm chapter two. Let me read that to you.
(21:43):
Listen carefully. Why do the heathen rage and the people
imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and
against his anointed, saying, let us break their bands asunder
and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth
in the heavens shall laugh. The Lord shall have them
(22:03):
in derision. Then shall he speak to them in his
wrath and vex them in his sore displeasure Psalm two
one to five. That's a reference to the fact that
at this particular time in Prophecy, the nations are going
to be angry against God. They're going to come together
to do war against God, and God is going to
laugh at them. He's going to laugh at them because
(22:24):
they are no match for his power. Doctor Warren Weersby
has summarized the nations in relationship to God in this chapter.
Speaker 3 (22:33):
Notice carefully what he says.
Speaker 4 (22:35):
Note the change in attitude shown by the nations of
the world. In Revelation eleven two, we are told that
the nations take over Israel, and they trod throughout Israel.
It says, but the court which is without leave out
and measure it not, for it is given unto the
gentiles and the Holy City, they shall trod underfoot forty
and two mouths. The nations are going to trod Jerusalem underfoot.
(22:58):
They're just going to walk over it ruthlessly. Keep reading
and notice that in eleven nine these same nations rejoice
when the two Witnesses are killed. But now they are angry.
They've walked all over Jerusalem and arrogance. They've rejoiced in
the death of the two Witnesses. But now the time
has come. In this prophecy that they're angry, they're shaking
(23:20):
their fists at God because of what everything God is
doing to this earth. We wonder why they haven't repented,
But they just get harder and they come together and
they join forces. They literally believe they're going to wipe
out God and they're ready to take God on. And
that's why it says here in this text that the
(23:41):
nations were angry and thy wrath is come.
Speaker 3 (23:49):
Well.
Speaker 2 (23:49):
It is quite a stark contrast between what is happening
in heaven and what is happening on earth. Hey, friends,
I'm going to be in heaven. I hope you are too.
The Bible says that before all of this judgment takes
place on the earth, during the tribulation, God will come
to receive to himself those who have put their trust
in him. That means the rapture will happen, and if
you are a Christian, you will be caught up to
(24:11):
be with the Lord and SoC she'll ever be with him.
So the question is, are you a Christian? Will you
be in heaven when all of this stuff is happening
on earth. I urge you to make your decision to
trust Christ today on this final edition of Turning Point
for this week. Wouldn't it be a great thing for
you to end it by putting your trust in Christ,
ask Him to come and forgive your sin and He
(24:32):
will do it. And then, friends, if you are Christians,
please do your very best to be in church this weekend.
You belong there, your church needs you. You are a
very important part of what God is doing on this earth.
So do your thing, go to church, and we'll see
on Monday. Right here next time. Thanks for listening.
