Speaker 1 (00:03):
This is Burke in the Game and I heard radio podcast. Okay,
so today is what days of today? Oh, Friday night,
and we basically are heading into week number two of
Dancing with the Stars Season thirty one. I'm dancing with
Sam Champion for those of you who are just tuning
(00:24):
into Burke in the Game. And let me just give
you guys a little recap first before I talk about
my personal life. So he did amazing, he meaning Sam Champion.
I have to tell you guys, leading up to the
actual live show on the premiere um date, which was September,
(00:44):
he was messing up like crazy, like we were tripping
over each other during camera blocking the day before. I
think I twisted my ankle. I mean it just was
a hot mess. And then there was like this reassurance
or like the dance gods definitely helped him and the
both of us through that premier night because he didn't
miss a step. I'm just so proud of Sam. You know,
(01:06):
Sam is not a performer. Yes, he has been on
television and you probably know him as um one of
the g m A weather men, right and our weather
man from g m A. And he you know, as
far as putting on a dance costume or doing any
type of like theater or art. I guess as far
(01:26):
as performing goes, this is the first for him. It
was interesting because I asked him a question recently when
was the last time he learned something new? And he
couldn't remember. But I believe that because he puts himself
in dangerous situations, which is something we discussed earlier today
because I was just trying to compare the adrenaline rush
(01:47):
that you go through either before your performance on Dancing
with the Stars or any type of stage, versus what
he does. And I'm like, well, you put yourself a
dangerous like situations that you are not a hundred percent
sure that you could come out of. Because mother nature
is mother nature. You can't control it. So he I
asked him, like, what types of situations have you put
(02:07):
yourself in and into? And he goes, well, I've been
in the middle of tornadoes and all of that. And
I'm like, well, what is that adrenaline rush like, because
that it's probably something that I've never experienced in my life. Yes,
there's that natural high you get after performing, but to
be honest, it's not the same as being in a
situation where you could life or death. Right, So at
(02:29):
the end of the day, I just remember feeling how
calm his energy was, and I asked him, like, what
do you remember from the from performing that night, you know,
when it was over, and he goes, I blacked out.
And I actually warned him about that that it's not
a bad thing. I think you kind of hit that.
I guess slow state or however you want to say it,
or maybe you're so nervous that you end up holding
(02:49):
your breath like a lot of these slips do because
they've never done this before. As what the premise of
the show is. But he said he blacked out and
that he didn't really feel like a lot of adrenaline
just in a way good because sometimes adrenaline can get
the best of you. I don't know I'm gonna I'm
specifically an adrenaline junkie, so I live and love all
of that stuff, no matter if it's nerves or whatever.
(03:12):
But I also said to Sam, look, let's change the
word nervous too excited. I think that really gets you.
I think when you say you're nervous, it gets in
your mind and it doesn't necessarily do you any favors.
But if you change the word to like, oh my god,
I'm just so excited I butterflies in my stomach, then
it becomes more of a better experience. Anyway. I also
(03:32):
realized throughout my seasons on Dancing with the Stars that
each partner I go and do this with, and go
along this journey with, each has its own or each
has their own way of doing it, whether that be
nailing it during camera blocking but not nailing it on
show day or vice versa, or not having it click
(03:54):
until Friday or Saturday of rehearsal and wondering, oh my gosh,
this is ever going to come together. I realized Sam's
formula and what he has naturally done was he learns
it pretty fast as far as the routine goes. He
doesn't really have problems when it comes to hearing music.
He hears it, but he gets in his head so
when he starts overthinking, or when he starts questioning or
(04:17):
not trusting the process or not giving me his body weight,
which I in Layman's terms, I guess that it kind
of relates to like just trust me, like trust that
if you don't know what's next, or if your mind
wants to play tricks on you just lean back, give
me your body weight and I can back lead you.
So we're just trying to find our flow right now.
And I think that he likes to like self sabotage
(04:40):
all the way up until show day, and man on
man does that stress me out? But you know what,
if he could perform like he did on Monday with
a little bit of improvement, that's all that matters, because again,
the premise of Dancing with the Stars is to come
on here with no dance experience and to just ride
along this crazy journey and this crazy emotional roller coaster
(05:02):
that we all experience every single week. Like as soon
as we get called and thank god for you guys
for voting us through, we would have not we would
have been eliminated first, I believe if it wasn't for
your votes, because our scores definitely we're not on the
top of the leaderboard. Put it that way, we were
like tied for boats with the bottom spot there at
(05:22):
all fives, which I believe he he definitely deserved better
than fives. I mean, come on that compared to the
other fives that were given out. I thought Sam did
a great job like his footwork was intact everything. But hey,
I'm not a judge. We can't control it all. We
can ask and beg for our your votes. You know,
if you look at the lineup, maybe you know Sam
(05:43):
Champion may not be the most recognizable name, but he
is the one with the most spirit, with the positivity.
Like what you guys see is what he is. He's
not putting on a smile, he's not faking it. He's
genuinely supporting every single couple being their number one cheerleader,
as you may have saw throughout that Life show. And
(06:04):
I just thought he, you know, really came into his
own like he was nervous. There was lots of emotions
running through his body. One of the producers told me
that she made him cry, but in a good way,
just saying how great he looked. And I think, you know,
you're coming onto this show completely living out of your
comfort zone, which is something that Sam, as I said earlier,
hasn't doesn't even remember the last time he learned something new,
(06:26):
So this has got to be scary. I had a
little taste of what the celebrities went through when I
did a show on NBC called I Can Do That
but let me tell you it's different because I am
a performer, So it does help no matter if I'm
performing with the Jablwaukee's or on Dancing with the Stars
or I'm a Harlem globetrotter. You've got a group of
people who know what they're doing. I kind of know
(06:48):
the formula as far as what I need to do
and be vulnerable. But for someone who has had complete
control over his whole life, who also has can it's
only a one man show. When he's doing the weather,
he's not with somebody else. The only thing he's fighting
against his mother nature just to get the best coverage. Right.
But still, at the end of the day, man, I
(07:09):
do believe Sam is what the show is all about.
And again, it's about the journey. I just hope we
have a long enough journey to show you guys how
much he has already improved. Right. So again, this is
what I say, Dancing with the Stars is the survival
of the mentally fittest, right, It's all a mental game
if you can just stay calm and try to respond
(07:31):
instead of react, and and try to just enjoy the process,
no matter if I sound like a broken record giving
him a thousand notes and then telling him to go
out and have fun and don't up. You know, that's
really a lot of pressure. But you know, Sam always
leaves rehearsal and comes into rehearsal no matter how sore
(07:51):
his hip is, which has been a kind of a
little bit of an issue. He's not injured, but we're
trying to prevent any injuries from happening, because you know,
it's just going to get more and more intense. I'm
happy that Sam and ABC has allowed Sam to relocate.
We are here in l A. Originally we were supposed
to travel back and forth from New York to l A.
But you know, Sam is sixty one years old. He's
(08:15):
still very young. Sixty one years young, let me say,
because he's got so much energy, more energy than I
know any other sixty one year old has. So um,
he is awesome. He never complains. He works so hard,
you guys, and I think this is I think he's
going to prove my point when I say it's easier
to mold somebody into a ballroom dancer with no dance
experience than someone who has dance experienced. Anyway, we were
(08:38):
right there at the bottom almost I know that part
was in no particular order, but part of me thinks
that it was. But anyway, I don't know. That's just
a myth that I have in my head. All these
conspiracy theories I have in my head over the years,
but probably none of them are true. So anyway, I'm
just trying to enjoy every single moment. I'm hard on Sam,
but you know that's nothing new. I'm hard on everyone,
(08:59):
especially people who I like, and at extra bonus, added bonus,
we are friends, so even harder poor Sam. But you
know he laughed at me because sometimes I say ship
that's just kind of out of I mean, I would
call it crazy too. I get so passionate and involved
and I just want him to do well and I
see his potential, so I don't let anything slideby. Put
(09:22):
it that way. Who knows what our package is going
to be this coming week, but it is Elvis night.
I just watched that new Elvis Presley movie that's out
with Austin Butler. Amazing, gave me chills, but I think
it's already leaked up. But we're doing a Viennese waltz
to Heartbreak Hotel, and this rendition is so freaking cool.
I love it. I'm hoping this set is what we
(09:44):
created an envisioned from the beginning. So anyway, tune in Monday.
What do you guys think For those that tuned into
Disney Plus, I'm not sure if there's still that Dollar
ninety Nights special, but I'm trying to post as much
as possible so you guys can at least see our dance.
At first, I was sure if they were gonna let
me Disney Plus and ABC we're gonna let me post
on my social but they said feel free, so you
(10:06):
can check it out on my Instagram page at Cheryl Burke,
on my TikTok at Cheryl Burke Official, um, Facebook at
Cheryl Burke, and my YouTube channel. I think that is
at or it's just Sheryl Burke Official probably. Anyhow, it's
all there and you can see our full dance. Unfortunately,
that's all I can post. I can't post the whole
(10:27):
show because I know I've been reading all your guys's
comments and I know you're still irritated by the fact
that it's not being shown anywhere but Disney Plus. UM. However,
you know you know you're going to get a cliff
note version, which is just me and my partner on
my on my social media and hopefully all the other
dancers are doing the same. But you know, two hours
(10:48):
without commercials, let me tell you that was not easy,
even for people who danced at the top of the
show like Sam and I. You know, Sam, he's such
a good student and he's just like he did and
even bring a cell phone up into that area where
everyone cheers each other on which we call the skybox
where al Fonso is with everyone. He he didn't know
(11:09):
that he could bring a cell phone, so this whole
two hour show, he was without a cell phone. So
I had to go find it because we also had
a vote for ourselves because you guys, we can only
vote within those two hours five pm Pacific Standard time,
eight p m. Eastern Standard time and seven pm Central
Standard time, and within the two hour Yeah right, so
you've got two hours from those times I just mentioned,
(11:31):
and you've got ten votes per phone line. And so
I had to go and get Sam's phone because I
didn't want to miss out on I would have I
would have regretted it. Put it that way if I
didn't find his phone before you know, we did the
results of the live show anyway, but no commercial break.
You can just never know when you're on camera, and unfortunately, unfortunately,
I guess my facial expressions say at all. So I
(11:53):
have to be very careful when I'm up there because
I get really into these performances, you know, and I
get really mad some of these judges. Anyway, it was
so great to see Louie back on the dance floor,
and it was so awesome to see Mark just nail it.
He went last, he danced with Charlie, he did a
proper chacha, and I just I just love this show.
(12:14):
I'm a huge fan. I will always be a fan,
whether I'm a part of it or not. And I
love that Alfonso was there. You know, Alfonso and I
were shooting the ship backstage. We go way back. I'm
not sure if you guys remember, but we did like
a switch up week one season, and I was Alfonso's
partner and we danced the Flamenco and we just had
a lot of fun. We have like a lot of
nasty like sense of humor. I guess we get we
(12:36):
get really inappropriate. Put it that way. That's where the
Dancing with the Stars after Dark a new show that
should happen, but will never happen anyway, UM, I don't know.
I love that he's there. I wish he had more
time with the couple so that he could interview us
a little bit more, maybe get to know a little
bit of the chemistry between each couple. But I'm pretty sure,
(12:56):
you know, once we get down to like maybe top
ten or even twelve couples, because we're still at fifteen,
one couple went home. Unfortunately, people didn't like that because
when was the last time we eliminated an actual couple
the first week? Normally we don't. Everyone gets to enjoy
the ride anyway. Unfortunately, Peter went home. Um, she danced
(13:17):
with the Sex and the City guy. I excuse me
forgot his name, but he's a really sweet guy. And
it was sad because Peter skipped out last season and
she came back this season. And I'm not sure if
she's ever been eliminated first, but I thought it was
gonna be me and I've never been eliminated first. Um
So anyway, I think maybe without your guys votes or
time will be coming soon just around the corner, So
(13:40):
remember we want you guys to vote. We would rather
be the people's choice and the judge's choice any day. Anyway,
he has improved. Sam has improved so much again we're
dancing at Viennese Waltz. I see huge improvement on his side,
and um, I'm very proud of him. Okay, onto my
personal life. Ye, back to the Burke in the game, Um,
(14:10):
I guess to hot topics. So I didn't know this
right away, as my attorney called me two days after
my divorce was finalized, but I guess not only was
it the premiere of season thirty one of Dancing with
the Stars in my twenties six season, it was also
the end of another chapter, which was my marriage. So
(14:31):
um that you know when I actually I saw that
in the press, but then I didn't believe it because
I was like, oh, I didn't hear from my attorney. Anyway.
Either way, I'm sure he's very busy. We're all busy.
I think he was on vacation with the family. Who knows.
I am divorced as of September nineteen and I have
currently and did have. I guess I am happy, but
(14:54):
I'm also like, there's nothing to celebrate really for me,
Like it's sad stale for me. So I have a
roller coaster of emotions, and I think, once again, you know,
when I wrap whenever our journey together ends here on
Dancing with the Stars with Sam, I'm pretty sure a
lot of different types of other emotions will hit me
as well. But you know, yes, we are still still
(15:15):
dealing with this dog situation, and I will keep you
guys updated on that. But yeah, I guess the end
of that chapter. Time to close that and just try
and move forward. But you know, I know a lot
of you guys have commented, not necessarily these listeners, my
loyal fans. I love you guys, but some haters definitely
(15:38):
comment and say, you know, move on, move on. You know,
I am here too. I believe the reason why I've
been given the platform that I've been given is to
share my story. And a part of sharing is a
part of going into your past and talking about it
anything that may still way heavy on your shoulders or
(15:58):
that's on your mind. And I believe that nobody should
be shushed shushed excuse me when it comes to their story.
You know, Um, if you guys don't like it, as
I said on this Yahoo interview that I did that
you can check out on Yahoo Lifestyle. Feel free to
choose U. Feel free to press that on followed button
any time, because honestly, the negativity to me, you know,
(16:22):
just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. And I
know not to listen to it, but really, I'm just human, right,
So careful with your words everyone. I'm just here to
share my story. If you don't like it, leave, I
love you, and I say that with love. And in
the meantime, I am here sore as hell, so as
Sam his hip freak. It hurts, and I'm just trying
(16:43):
to keep my head up, you know, one day at
a time. I my sobriety still comes first before any
of this stuff, Before dancing in the stars, before my
marriage or my now first marriage, um and before anybody
really even my family. My sobriety comes first. And this
is what I need to think about, and I need
to get my head straight when I don't feel like
(17:04):
my sobriety comes first, you know. So the dating process, guys,
I know this was a podcast about dating, yet I
haven't gone on one day. That's okay. It will happen
when it happens and when the universe wants it to happen,
It shall happen. Whatever is meant to be shall be.
I shall surrender to it and just continue to focus
(17:24):
on making me better and waking up feeling like you
know what. I love myself and I'm putting myself first,
and I'm continuing to learn to love myself and to
respect myself. And whatever shall be from there shall be,
and so be it. Okay, this is a long one,
(17:47):
good old almost eighteen minutes. I love you, guys. Vote
