Speaker 1 (00:00):
Quiet Please with Mel Reed and Kira Dixon is an
iHeart women's sports production in partnership with Deep Blue Sports
and Entertainment. You can find us on the iHeartRadio app,
Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Okay, welcome
(00:23):
back to Quiet Please. Kira here alongside big time broadcaster
en course commentator Mel Reid. How was your week in Utah?
Utah is sick by the way you're hiking pick selectoricle.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Oh my god, it's so amazing, like really really pretty.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
Yeah, it was cool.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
So I've always thought that my direction would be more
on course and more kind of play by play like
a walker, and I absolutely loved it. It's not as
easy as people make it, Luk. Basically no, it's really
really hard. It's really not like there's timing to it
because you've got obviously people in the studio who are
analyzing the shot as well wherever they may be, and
(01:02):
then you've got your producer. So yeah, I had like
a ten to fifteen minutes crash course and then kind
of got thrown into the field, which I actually loved
in a way because I liked the uncomfortableness of.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
It, and you just got to figure it out.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
I actually called on my girls. I called on Iona
Stephen Nice, so she.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
Helped me out a lot.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Kay Cockle, who obviously was there on site with me,
who's been there for gosh thirty years.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
She gave me a lot of advice.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
And then after the first day, I was like, I
felt like I did such a shit job. Like I
was like, I was like so pissed off. I was
really upset with myself, like I rang. I was like
almost in tears. I don't know, because I was like
I worked really hard to try and be really good,
and then when you kind of put in the field,
you have to just reactah. And I just was shuggaring
me sometimes with timing of things and like you kind
(01:49):
of have to do it, and then people can like
pick up on your habits. So when people would throw
it to me, I would say yeah, which I would
normally say anyway, So if you're like blah blah blah blah,
and I go, yeah, she's got seven yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
Yeah, you know what I mean, total conversation.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
Yeah, so literally, yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
So I actually called Karen Stepples, who was working with
me last week, but she was in the studio and
we spoke till like ten thirty. So she gave me
a lot of really cool guidance and just yet very thankful.
And have you ever worked with Abby Johnson the producer?
Speaker 1 (02:17):
Yes, I work with Abby a ton on the road.
She works on all of the NBC shows like Valero
valspar Us Open, any show that NBC Sports carries on
the PGA tour. She is, she's on those shows. She's amazing.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Yeah, so she's very like what's she's like. She's very like,
doesn't put a silver lining on it.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
Basically, she's very direct, very direct, but she's got so
much going on that she just doesn't have time.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
And she's very quick, like I've known, she's much quicker,
like aficient, like, she's very efficient. I love every producer,
but there's something about Abby that I felt like she
pushed me across what I thought I could do, but
in a safe place.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
Whenever she gave me comp like whenever she gave me
a compliment, I don't know, it just really went a
long way with me. She's one of the people that
giving exactly she's not just doing it to say like,
oh you did great, you know it was, Hey, you
did a really good job at this And so when
someone says that, like, I don't know, it's just a
very I.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
Just respect the hell out of that.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
So yeah, I really I just want to give her
some love because she really helped me last week by
just really pushing me into really uncomfortable situations and throwing
me into that kind of environment that I didn't know I was.
I was ready to do like walk and talks and
like interviews and stuff I've never done, and she just
was like, no, you're good, you can do it, like
she was like that, and so yeah, I just got
a lot of confidence from her. So I just wanted
to give her some love. Also that week, I met
(03:39):
a lovely young lady called Katie who was a huge
fan of the podcast.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
Her and a sister.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
We have fans.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
We have fans. Loads of people started, yeah, loads of.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
People, sorry, but one in particular was a lady, a
young woman called Katie. She was one Salt Lake City.
So I wanted to give her some love. Her and
a sister are big fans. She thinks we're hilarious.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
Yeah, so nice.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
Yes, I kind of forget that people actually listen.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
To Yeah, I know, say, I think it's just a
little fun thing.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
Yeah, oh that makes me so happy. So let's go
back a little bit. So, Hayron, you is now a
three time winner on the LPGA Tour. She won the
inaugural Black Desert Championship, which is what you were working
and you were commentating for the first time on the
LPGA or doing any sort of encourse commentary, which is
why this was a big deal for you and for her.
(04:28):
Let's go into a little bit of how she won,
your thoughts on the golf course, what the tournament was like,
because this is the first time that it was played.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
So the tournament itself, I thought, Patrick, who owns Black Desert,
has really big visions.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
The place is stunning.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
Do they host a tour event last year?
Speaker 3 (04:44):
The yet McCarty one.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
Oh, that's right, that's right. That's a huge deal that
they are committed to the PGA Tour and the LPGA.
That's amazing.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
And not just that, like they flew the girls private
from Chevron.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
He got like h for them. Wow, that's great.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
And it puts them up for free on accommodation on site.
He basically and if you need a car, you get
like whatever you needed. He accommodated he really upped the
level of you know, inaugural LPG event, to be honest
with you, which was just awesome. He did a great job.
I actually spent some time with him. He was a
great guy.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
So yeah, I thought the actual set up a bit.
So it's a really cool setting.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
Without getting to much into it, so it's a it's
got like lava, which you would never expect. People say
it's like Hawaii meet Sedona because it was an old
volcano that erupted. I don't know, millions of years ago.
Speaker 1 (05:29):
Yeah, not recently, not like in the last week or so.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
So.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
Not that I know of. Anyway, it wasn't on my
weather forecast. So it is stunning. But it's quite tight,
so it's quite difficult to get spectators there. It's funky,
there's no doubt about it. It is very funky. Like
the front line is quite funky, especially when the wind
comes in, Like you've got to be very mindful because
the lava is basically out of bound, so within like
a yard of the fairway, you just out of bounds.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
The floor is lava.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
The floor is lava.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
But look it's one of them. I think it's a
really good golf course. It's got a lot. Yeah, and
the condition of it was great. It's one of them
golf courses you kind of want to take you buddies
on and like a Friday afternoon and mess around on.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
But it was tricky like you could either like.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
You know, had on and all the leaders you could
really get it going, or you felt like, oh my god,
this golf course is so tight, like I don't know
how I'm going to get this around in less than
eighty I felt like that's how it was. You're either
shooting sixty five or eighty five kind of thing.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Cool. And how is your walking talk with Charlie Hall?
Speaker 3 (06:25):
Fuck you help?
Speaker 1 (06:27):
I fucking love Charlie. Honestly I watched. I didn't want
to watch all of what you did obviously, and just
by the way you sounded great, Oh thank you.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
But like little things like that that you'll know, I
didn't know when you're interviewing, don't go across your arm
with Mike.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
So yeah, like feels a lot of word hold it
in the other hand.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Yeah, And then you know, Stuffs told me that afterwards,
and I didn't even think of that.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
I wouldn't even think of that.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Yeah, But that's okay, yeah, yeah, you having so many
cracks doing this?
Speaker 3 (06:55):
Well, we'll see. But she was great.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
The cool thing about this she just come off two
bogies and I to give her a little look and
us like any chance, and she's like, yeah, geez whatever, yeah,
what you need mate, And then we're walking to the
tea where I'm going to do that she I'm gonna
let her hit the T shirt. And all she talked
about was how to get a PB down like her
five K down. How she was she was talking to
me all about finish. She it's an obsession.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
But that's great. That's the point of the walk and
talk is I want to know about Charlie hole off course, that's.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Exactly the point of the get exactly. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
Yeah, So she was awesome. I also did Ronnie in
she was great, esther, she was great. Linda Duncan was awesome.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
Ronnie and Esther finished runner up. They did bye what
was it five shots? But Ronn has been playing great golf.
She was also runner up in Chevron. Speaking of Esther,
so look, our very own mel Reed is inspiring the youth.
There was this quote from her. It said during one
of her post round press conferences. Last week she said,
(07:52):
I was at a golf tournament in Germany watching her
mel Reed once and she gave me a ball. That
was where I really wanted to I'm professional after that.
So she's been an idol. It's pretty cool to have
her out commentating on me. Esther, how do you say
your last name? Hence late? Yeah, so our very own
mel Reed inspiring the youth, big deal.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
Well, I appreciate that this is making me blush.
Speaker 1 (08:17):
But that's so nice though that she said that.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
Yeah, it was really awesome.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
Like Ice told me that at Solheim like one of
the I think it was Monday or Tuesday night, and
I was like, I thought he was joking. I was like,
when you bullshit me? And he was like no, I'm
dead serious. And I was like, like it moved me.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
Like I generally, you never know when you're you made
a difference in somebody.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
Yeah, And like my best mate Briand was there.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Braham was just fucking She's just a cryer anyway, So
she was like, oh my god, so.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Really so she was just like she was gone.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
I was like, Bezzy, yeah way, but yeah, listen, my
mum always said always be nice to the people on
the way up, because you will always meet them on
the way back down. So for everybody to be kind
to everyone.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
That's a great lesson.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
But yeah, that was very sweet of.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
Her, and she's she's a lovely a lovely young lady
and a great girlf So it was cool to watch
her this weekend.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
Proud of you, thank you, But yeah, it was great.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
How was your week off?
Speaker 1 (09:05):
My week off has been great. I have a whole
nother one off this week and then I go to
the PGA. I know, I go to the PGA Championship
on Sunday. I spent my weekend with a bunch of
friends up in Sonoma doing some wine country things, some hiking,
which was very, very lovely. It kind of got off
the grid for a bit. I've also been I've been
(09:26):
talking to you a little bit about this, but I'm
trying to recommit to my health right now because after
the first ten weeks that I did on the road
of the year, I really I don't know if it's
because I'm getting older or what, but I just really yeah, thanks,
mal I just was really yeah, thirty three going on
seventy over here, I've really been struggling. So I've been
(09:51):
doing my pilates. As Melreed calls in, I joined a
gym in my neighborhood.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
Yes, we had many voice notes about this, many.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
In voice notes. I've made appointments at a holistic doctor
to figure somethings out. I don't know what they'll tell me.
I've made an appointment for some hormone testing, and I
made appointments to find out if I have any food sensitivity.
It's funny you say this.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
Me and Cannie are talking about this, So can you
send me some links?
Speaker 1 (10:19):
Because yeah, well, I mean all these places are in
San Francisco. But even if it's just the same concept,
I'll send you what it is.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
We literally have been talking about this for two weeks
because I've done a food sensitivity test before, but I
really want to get it dialed in because I'm I think,
I'm this is an awful I kindomy have admitting this.
I think I'm slightly allergic to wheat, which obviously means beer.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
Oh my god, that's like a top three foods that
you consume.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
And I can tell when I don't drink bit.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
How much better I feel like if I drink wine
instead of beer, But I still drink beer because it's
just I love it. Yeah, and I just risk it
for a biscuit. But good few here. I need to
do that as well. Hormones and all that stuff. It's
good for you.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
Yeah, I just have been really not feeling great. And
I also get this is like not too much information,
but I get like very very bloated, very easily from
eating like I don't know, like nothing, Like I eat
what I think is really healthy and I just feel gross.
So I must be eating something that I'm not necessarily full.
(11:19):
I'm not dying. I'm not going into like anaphylectic shock,
but I maybe there's something about it that my gut
health isn't approving.
Speaker 4 (11:26):
Well.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
The foods are shit, isn't it. Yeah?
Speaker 1 (11:30):
It really?
Speaker 3 (11:31):
Oh sorry, No, I was just gonna say a boring
story about red peppers.
Speaker 1 (11:35):
Go no, no, I want to hear it.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
I'm slightly allergic to like red pepper. I have a
few sensivity to just red peppers.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
Oh that's interesting.
Speaker 3 (11:41):
I know that was worth it.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
I hate red peppers, so do you? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (11:45):
Gross? How can you hate it? They didn't taste anything.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
I hate the texture of the smell. It's a night
shade thing. I hate eggplant. I hate really yeah, gross.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
I love everything that's wrong. There's nothing that I don't.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
I mean, it's only that little small category. Oh, olives,
as we've talked about. I hate olive. You have pickles,
I love, Well, that's like half of my personality is.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
Like, I'm sorry, there some spicy deale pickle chips that
you should do.
Speaker 3 (12:15):
Love that so good.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
My new appointment is probably going to tell me that
I have a sensitivity too. The reason I got excited
was because when you said that the food in America
is shit. Is because Andrew and I kind of half
spontaneously are planning a trip to London in June. Oh fun.
We decided over the weekend, so we're gonna have to
Well maybe on another episode we'll talk about some of
your London Rex. Yeah, for sure. How do you go
(12:39):
for We're gonna go for like five days at the.
Speaker 4 (12:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
Because I love cities. I love New York City. If
I could live anywhere in the world to be in
New York City. Hate he hates New York City. He
isn't very impressed with most cities. But last summer we
went to London and he was like wow, blown away
and he suggested. He suggested that we go on another trip.
So we went over the holidays and it was the
most amazing thing. And then he suggested again. So I'm
(13:03):
really leaning into anytime Andrew says we can go to London.
Speaker 5 (13:07):
We're going.
Speaker 1 (13:07):
We're playing okay. So we have a very fun guest today,
Aaron lim Rhodes is joining the show. We have known
Aarin for a couple of years now, two or three
years now through golf. She is a host on E News.
She's actually today when we're recording. Today is the Monday
of the Met Gala, and she is currently I bet
(13:30):
you in this moment in New York City getting ready
for the Met Gala where she's going to be doing
interviews on the rent carpet. She does Coachella, she does
movie premiers, she does press junkets. She is so so talented.
So she tells us all about her journey. But we
met her through golf, through the eight Am Invitational, which
has been something we've been talking about for like the
last two weeks on the pod. I've been on a
(13:50):
golf trip with her. And now she's also Mele's personal stylist.
So we love erin.
Speaker 3 (13:55):
We love Aerin.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
She definitely you'll hear on the pod, but she definitely
helps me with my starling and she did a whole
interest board for me and I give us some swing tips.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
So the love is very mutual.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
And she's a great guest and she's really fun to
talk to and she is generally if I need to
start advice, I will text Erin now.
Speaker 3 (14:11):
So yes, yes, love Saron.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
Same. So I hope everybody enjoys our chat with Erin
and we will see you next week. Quiet please is
so excited to welcome Aaron Limb Rhodes to the show.
She's a host and correspondent ONNY News. She hosts Ease
the Rundown, Wife, Mama and Mel. I think that something
(14:38):
we're most excited about is the fact that she's a
call for Aeron. Welcome to the show.
Speaker 5 (14:43):
Wh whoa, Hi, guys, thank you for having me.
Speaker 4 (14:47):
If you are watching the video, I'm so sorry, stripped down.
You get the real me today. Love that glamor is
in an hour. So here I am though. I'm so
happy to be with you als.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
We're so happy that you're here us. Where are you
right now?
Speaker 4 (15:01):
I'm in my dressing room at Universal right now in
La so here. Here's a little preview my little four walls,
the view of the mountains and the rain and the
clothes I'll.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
Be wearing amazing. Do your clothes get styled for you?
Speaker 6 (15:15):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (15:16):
I have a stylist, Roberto. He styles me whenever I
do the show, red carpets everything.
Speaker 3 (15:22):
I need to get me a stylist.
Speaker 1 (15:24):
Yeah, Roberto feels like such a great name for a stylist.
Speaker 3 (15:27):
Yeah it is.
Speaker 2 (15:28):
I've actually got a picture in my heads.
Speaker 5 (15:32):
He's great. He might be in the background soon.
Speaker 3 (15:35):
Fantastic.
Speaker 5 (15:35):
Wait, you said you want to get you a stylist.
I'll be your stylist, and I.
Speaker 3 (15:40):
Yes, please, I need any hurry.
Speaker 5 (15:42):
I'll dress for tour.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
Well, I'm not touring anymore.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
I'm not touring anymore of retireds, which is why now
I need a stylist now for.
Speaker 1 (15:49):
Our podcast tour one day when we do life shows.
Speaker 4 (15:52):
Yeah, I would love to do that, Like, I just
want to love someone to let me do that for free,
and like you're not paying me, so you're not gonna
feel bad if I mess up and then I'm not
you know, it.
Speaker 5 (16:03):
Would be like a really good, mutually beneficial fun thing.
Speaker 3 (16:06):
Honestly, I need immediately text.
Speaker 4 (16:09):
Me your ideal looks and vibes and then like we
can go from there. I do this for my girlfriends
whenever they're about to go on a date night.
Speaker 1 (16:16):
It's so okay, Well, no casual offers, Aarin, we will
be following up.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
Okay, Yeah, I'm definitely gonna do that. I don't even
know what my style is, but I'll have a look.
Speaker 1 (16:24):
And Aaron will figure it out for you.
Speaker 3 (16:25):
Yeah, just just not girly, Okay, yeah, no, totally, I
got that.
Speaker 5 (16:29):
My girl tomboy chic is my favorite.
Speaker 3 (16:32):
That's my favorite style, Ashton harrisy, I get you.
Speaker 1 (16:35):
Aaron loves like a chic cargo pant and a hoodie,
like cool glasses. Aaron's husband is like the style king.
Yeah he isn't your husband. Aaron a creative director.
Speaker 5 (16:48):
Yes, he's a creative director.
Speaker 4 (16:50):
He has like really good taste and like just an
own passion and interest for fashion and a clothing line.
He styles me whenever I like play golf tournament or
if I want to have like a really fun style.
Speaker 5 (17:03):
He and I work together.
Speaker 3 (17:04):
You did a prety swag on the golf course.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
I feel like I've said that about Kira, and now
you were in the same category.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
I musta say.
Speaker 1 (17:10):
You just bring your own personality to it. You completely
reimagine what golf attire is.
Speaker 4 (17:16):
Oh, it's nothing crazy, but thank you for saying that.
I like to have fun out there.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
So let's back up and get straight into how your
golf life came to be, and then we can talk
about how you reimagine your fashion on the golf course,
because you make it so cool and so attainable and
so in my mind, something that people want to be
able to do themselves. So how did you first come
to be able to pick up a golf club?
Speaker 4 (17:40):
So? Okay for growing from the very beginning in high school,
I used to play competitive soccer and then I quit,
and my father was like so mad because that was
my ticket to college and everything. But really, like it
wasn't good enough to get a D one scholarship. But
I played at like a high level in my high
school one championships every year we got rings in the
whole thing.
Speaker 1 (18:00):
So I quit.
Speaker 4 (18:00):
I was burnt out, and then to pacify him, I
randomly joined the golf team, the girls golf team, because
there was like essentially three girls on the girls' golf team,
and they were begging for people to join, and the
athletic director was like an assistant soccer coach or like
a teacher of mine, and he's like, what are you
going to do with your life now that you're not
playing soccer. He's like, you need to get out there
(18:21):
on the golf course.
Speaker 5 (18:22):
And I was like, I.
Speaker 4 (18:24):
Do because then I could I could skip fifth and
sixth period because I.
Speaker 1 (18:28):
Do need to get out there.
Speaker 4 (18:29):
So then I like essentially join the golf team. In
high school, I was like, really bad. I got most
improved because like no one else could improve. So I,
you know, I became I think I became capturing my
senior year, but I was trash, and after high school
I never played again and cut to like here and
(18:51):
there throughout my adult life, I'm going on the range
and all occasionally posted on social media, because that's what
you do when you get out on the driving range.
You posted on social media and let everyone now like
look at me. So then Hallie led Beetter, a mutual
friend of ours, like sees this, and then she and
Michelle we have a podcast, and two years ago I
(19:11):
get invited to go on their podcast because I think
I'm a golf girly and really, in reality, I hadn't
golfed since forever, and I like kind of embellished my
story on their pod, and I had spoken about this recently.
I'm like looking back, like, whoa. I totally lied and
I was like, yeah, I'm really good at chipping and whatever.
Speaker 5 (19:28):
I don't know why I was nervous. I was nervous
in front of Michelle. We okay, and I was like,
I'm really good.
Speaker 1 (19:35):
You're like, yeah, that short game's great.
Speaker 4 (19:38):
She invites me to the eight a m tournament that
Kier and I play in, which is justin Timberlake and
Jimmy Fallon's tournament as well.
Speaker 2 (19:47):
One.
Speaker 1 (19:47):
Yeah, now she's too busy.
Speaker 2 (19:51):
I'm too busy. I know it sucks because it was
one of my favorite weeks. I tried to convince my
wife that it was at Honeymoons, so it was the
week after our wedding, and so I convince so that
we were going that that was now our honeymoon.
Speaker 5 (20:02):
So that's hlious.
Speaker 3 (20:03):
But she had a great time.
Speaker 2 (20:04):
She's a big fan of Justin Timblake, so she about
pants when she met him.
Speaker 3 (20:07):
Yeah, so that was like, I got away with it.
We just had a great time.
Speaker 2 (20:10):
And like with Travis Kelcey and Patrick Homes, she literally
was just constantly and just in.
Speaker 1 (20:14):
Awe, that's a great honeymoon.
Speaker 5 (20:16):
Yeah, I think that's the best.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
I mean, you know me, he's here always thinking about
you know, other people, especially my wife, so.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
So so unselfish, well generous. Okay, continue erin.
Speaker 5 (20:28):
So you all know how fun that tournament is.
Speaker 3 (20:31):
It is the best best.
Speaker 4 (20:32):
When she invited me, I said, absolutely not. There's no
way I'm playing in like a celebrity tournament. She's like Aaron,
we don't keep score essentially, and we drink a lot
of tequila and I said okay, And she said they
go a karaoke night.
Speaker 5 (20:43):
I said, okay, I'll be there. So I go.
Speaker 4 (20:46):
And it's literally the most fun weekend I've ever had.
And I commit my life to golf.
Speaker 3 (20:51):
After that.
Speaker 5 (20:52):
Okay, I'm like, wait, this is golf.
Speaker 4 (20:54):
We could be having drinks and smoking cigars and great
music and there's a basketball hoop at the whatever it is,
and we're like having a damn good time. And it's
really not about the golf for getting good shots off.
It's just about making friendships and really cool vibes. So
I literally was like, I will get good so next
year they'll be like who the hell is she? And
(21:16):
I don't think I got to that level the next
year where they're like who the hell is she? But
they're like, wow, you have like a little bit of
knowledge of the game now.
Speaker 2 (21:23):
I think that event is actually so cool as well,
because you're right, it doesn't Nobody actually really cares. Everyone's
just having a fun time, aren't they. Like that's basically
what it is at the A T M Golf right, Like,
I think they've did an amazing job at that. And
like the celebrity status there is so high and everyone
is like bad a celebrity, but nobody like cares. Like
everyone's just having a laugh and like getting on and
(21:44):
it's like you've known each other for years.
Speaker 1 (21:46):
It's kind of a weird.
Speaker 3 (21:47):
Like setting, I.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
Was like, oh, there's Jimmy Fallon. Like didn't think anything
of it, you know what I mean, But if I
saw him down the street, I would think, WHOA, that's
Jimmy Fallon.
Speaker 1 (21:54):
It's so cool.
Speaker 4 (21:55):
And like the fact that there's no media and no phones,
it makes it like such a loose, stripped down environment
where it's like not that much. I mean there's high
pressure at the first you always, but it doesn't feel
like the pressure of like a real tournament.
Speaker 1 (22:09):
Like a real pro am or something with their fans.
Speaker 5 (22:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (22:12):
Yeah, how did you get connected with George Gankis So?
I know afterwards you went hard in gankis Land taking lessons.
Speaker 4 (22:20):
So my local course, my public muni is the course
that George teaches at. And he's like the Westlake guy,
and I had just known him throughout the years from
casually going to the course. I took a lesson from him,
like many years ago when his prices were maybe in
the double digits and you know, not that anymore.
Speaker 1 (22:43):
Whatever it takes.
Speaker 4 (22:45):
And now that I'm so into it, like I took
lessons from other people and I was like, man, there's
just something to this kooky guy, George. He's got this
swing method that's really unconventional and is teaching just for
some reason clicks and make sense to me. I'm very
like there are a lot of people who are like,
just do this feeling, and I'm like, no, I want
(23:06):
to know the scientific thing behind it, or I need
to know like why my body needs to move this way,
and like, if we're talking about percentages here, where should
my weight be? If you had to like break it down,
Like I can't.
Speaker 5 (23:16):
Just be like feeling.
Speaker 4 (23:18):
I need to like know the breakdown of it. And
he speaks to my brain that way. So yeah, I
just see him all the time and now like that's
that's my go to guy. And and I immediately saw
a difference, like when I was doing casual lessons here
and there, and then when I started going with him,
I was like, oh, I'm seeing the improvement.
Speaker 5 (23:37):
Things are making sense, and now I understand it a
little more.
Speaker 2 (23:41):
He's also not like the typical golf teaching prosy, Like
does his vibe, like what he dresses, like like the
way he communicates, the way he talks.
Speaker 4 (23:50):
Sometimes he's barefoot, and he's just so like chill, and
the fact that it's at my local Muni and he
has like, you know, the beat up mats and it's
not perfect condition. It just doesn't have that stuffy snobby seals.
Speaker 1 (24:04):
Yeah, it's approachable.
Speaker 5 (24:05):
I like that.
Speaker 4 (24:06):
It's really approachable to me and the casualness of it all.
And I'm just like a Muni girl for life, even
though I have a country club membership.
Speaker 5 (24:14):
I just don't f with it.
Speaker 3 (24:15):
You need different.
Speaker 1 (24:16):
But I love that you show up in like a
sports bra or crop top or cut off and you're
just you. And it's how amazing is it to be
able to learn something that's really really hard in an
environment that you're actually comfortable in Totally.
Speaker 5 (24:29):
I mean, don't get me wrong.
Speaker 4 (24:30):
I love a scirt that twirls, and I love a
cute dress and an occasional polo, but I want to
maintain my style and not feel like so boxy.
Speaker 1 (24:41):
So Mel has been looking at ear swing videos we've
prepared you. He's got notes, So please Susan looking at
your progression and pert Mel, things are looking up.
Speaker 3 (24:57):
Things are looking up, girl. So first, well, big fun George.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
I actually love how like Rory is and like authentic
and like grounded he is. And I also like love
how his technique stuff as well. So a big fan
of George. Just giving George a bit of a big
up there shout out. So I've noticed a couple of things.
Your position at the top is much better, like it's
nowhere near across the line, and the structure at the
top is way more solid, I guess, like instead of
(25:22):
it flopping around everywhere like Lucy Goosey everywhere.
Speaker 3 (25:25):
Your structure at the top is.
Speaker 2 (25:26):
Much improved, so it's way easier to deliver it on
the correct plane on the way down. And you're putting
as well, I must say, erin much better. It's not
like sixty five feet this way and then sixty five
feet that way. It's like, actually looks like a decent
putting stroke now. So I'm very proud of you. George
is doing some good work with you. Yeah, you look
at its massive improvements.
Speaker 4 (25:48):
Having changed in like literally a week ago. Like I
was still going so hard at it so fast. He's like,
have a little rhythm, like a little one too, and
I was like, oh, oh, I think I get it now.
And I changed my putter. I was a blade person
for a while and that thing just came out hot.
And now I stole my husband's mallet because those things
(26:11):
are collecting dust and I'm like, okay, this works for me.
Speaker 2 (26:14):
Yeah, And it's much easier to keep the mallet square
as well, and it does a blade pokes blade put
you've got to kind.
Speaker 3 (26:19):
Of have it to heavy.
Speaker 1 (26:20):
I use a mallet to do game changer. I can't
be doing a blade. That's not for me.
Speaker 4 (26:25):
No, but I still like sometimes when momentum is I'm
catching momentum, it'll like go across the line a little bit,
so like I'm trying to get that.
Speaker 5 (26:35):
Are we getting technical here?
Speaker 3 (26:36):
Is that to do it?
Speaker 1 (26:37):
This is a golf podcast.
Speaker 4 (26:40):
You know, when you're trying to get a full turn,
like the full turn, but like also not have it
across the line, like and my arm just like I
don't do enough yoga for this game.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
It feels like you don't realize what muscles you're use
in golf. It's kind of crazy.
Speaker 5 (26:56):
It's so crazy.
Speaker 3 (26:57):
It's nuts, isn't it.
Speaker 2 (26:58):
Yeah, Like even if I have like a week off,
when I go and hit balls, I'll be saw whereas
like I don't get sot at all when I'm obviously
hitting back when I was playing like eight hours of balls. Yeah,
but no, honestly, it's good. He's doing some good work
with you. Honestly, it's it's definitely much improved. So like
I feel at your level, like just putting a little
bit of effort and that I think gives you like
the energy and the bug to keep going totally because
(27:21):
you can see improvements pretty quickly in progress. And it's fun,
isn't it.
Speaker 5 (27:24):
It's so fun.
Speaker 4 (27:25):
It's like this euphoric feeling when you hit the ball correctly.
Speaker 5 (27:30):
It's a high.
Speaker 4 (27:30):
I can't explain as you guys know. That's why we're
in it more so ridicted. But my friends, we don't play,
don't get it. They're like, oh, it's hard, and like
it is hard. It's so satisfying.
Speaker 1 (27:43):
I have one more question on the game because thing
I would move on. But when they're like crouched down
behind you, what is that ideology behind that?
Speaker 5 (27:51):
You know, everyone is like, why are there's so many
men on you?
Speaker 1 (27:55):
I mean I was going to say it like that,
but yeah, who are these people?
Speaker 3 (28:00):
And a lot of rods. There's rods. This alignment sticks
everywhere as well.
Speaker 5 (28:04):
The alignment sticks all of the equipment.
Speaker 4 (28:07):
I had like a stretchy exercise band around me last week.
So for me, what I know that the guy Johnny
behind me is doing. He's like helping me rotate my
hips because I don't do it.
Speaker 5 (28:19):
I don't get it.
Speaker 4 (28:20):
And he does this for everyone, girls and guys alike
in all ages. Whatever. Yeah, it's like helping us like
rotate our hips or sometimes.
Speaker 5 (28:28):
I mean he does so many.
Speaker 4 (28:28):
Things back there where it's like rotating the hips or
like helping get my pressure, like if it needs to
be forward or back, like sometimes that's what he's doing.
Speaker 5 (28:37):
And then the.
Speaker 4 (28:38):
Other guy, Leo, who's usually like in the front, it's
like I have a head dropping problem or lifting problem,
so he's always like putting some type of device there
to like help me from doing that, And I like
don't even think about them there.
Speaker 5 (28:54):
They just like kind of help my body do that.
Speaker 4 (28:56):
And then like after so many reps, I get the
feel and then I'm like able to do that. So yeah,
I think it's just like helping your body's mobility and moveability.
Speaker 5 (29:05):
Yeah I don't know.
Speaker 2 (29:06):
I mean, yeah, they're just moving you for a moving pattern, right,
so that you can oh, actually I thought I was
doing it.
Speaker 3 (29:11):
This is a funny thing about golf.
Speaker 2 (29:12):
Whatever you think, you can exaggerate it by tenfold. Yeah, yeah,
you know what I mean. And so once they do,
you're like, WHOA, that's a lot. And then when you
actually do it and they video it, it's moved about
a cord of an inch.
Speaker 3 (29:22):
It's crazy.
Speaker 4 (29:23):
Yeah, and I'm a well I just had a Celsius
and I'm starting tortations.
Speaker 5 (29:29):
The Celsius just hits like hids talking about golf. Should
we go, let's go goal?
Speaker 1 (29:40):
I guess, let's go, Let's go. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (29:42):
Like I'm a very aware person when something is making
me feel uncomfortable, someone's too close, or if I feel
like my personal space is invaded, I'm very like, whoa
back off? But I don't even notice it, realized it.
I'm not bothered by it. And they're those guys are
just like the sweetest, like most subdued dudes who don't
even look at you in any type of way.
Speaker 5 (30:04):
So I feel very comfortable with all of it.
Speaker 2 (30:07):
Have you hit them yet all this morning that you.
Speaker 3 (30:13):
I think he shaved his knee cap off a little.
Speaker 4 (30:14):
Bit, literally, Johnny, and I think he's taken a backswing
from me. I think he's taken like an over rotating
thing on the finish.
Speaker 1 (30:23):
Like I feel like they should have knee pads and
a football helmet on. Yes, if they're going to do that,
if you're trusting amateur golf.
Speaker 5 (30:29):
I literally say to them all the time, I'm like,
I don't trust myself. You should not be doing what
you're doing. I don't know. I can't get any.
Speaker 1 (30:36):
I don't trust myself. You shouldn't be trusted.
Speaker 5 (30:37):
Yeah, I was like, let me just let the record
stay that I warned you.
Speaker 3 (30:42):
Oh that's so funny. So let's go back. So did
you meet Michelle from Helle?
Speaker 4 (30:47):
We essentially met through Instagram I think like maybe Hallie
put No. Michelle said she was a fan of the
show of my show, The Rundown, and then we started
following each other and then she was like I love
that you are like kind of interested in golf and
are out there occasionally. And then we just like yeah,
started chatting through dam and she knew a friend of
(31:08):
mine who also went to Stanford, and then yeah, then
from the pod onward, we just like hit it off.
Speaker 3 (31:14):
Yeah, she's pretty easy to hit off with.
Speaker 1 (31:16):
She's big about you know, as soon as you show
any sort of interest in the game, she'll immediately wrap
her arms around you, like, come with me, come to
all these fun things, like let's get you in there.
Is she Yeah, I think reached out directly to the
eight am people and was like we have to have air.
Speaker 4 (31:32):
Yeah, which was like so awesome and like really sweet
to like let me into that sorority fraternity of people
because it does feel pretty exclusive, which you know, I'm
like so grateful to be on.
Speaker 5 (31:45):
The list to be there.
Speaker 4 (31:46):
And I have to say the women who have welcomed
me with open arms when I started showing interest, Kira Hallie, Michelle, like,
you guys set me up like I I don't know,
like getting me to go to the callaway to get
a proper fitting, to introducing me to brands that have
(32:07):
great stuff, to just like a really fun girls golf
trip that I now need to do every year.
Speaker 5 (32:13):
So we got to start planning it.
Speaker 1 (32:14):
We went to Bandon together, Mel, did you know that,
Oh fuck off?
Speaker 5 (32:18):
Can you come with us next time?
Speaker 1 (32:20):
We need an annual girls trip to Abandon? Okay, wait,
I have to tell you about this though, Mel, this
is what showed you how obsessed Aaron has become with golf.
This was she was like in between an event and
going to the general Met Gala. She had a major
back injury and it poured rain the entire time that
(32:43):
we were at Bandoned. Dudes, and Erin showed up with
the face dragging all of her ship for the met gala. Yes, yes,
and we had so much it was like one of
those things where like also like a bunch of other
stuff was going wrong, like whatever could go wrong did
go wrong, and we had the time of our lives
(33:04):
dragging her golf clubs through the rain. Okay, it was amazing.
Speaker 2 (33:09):
No more fucking going on golf trips about me. Okay,
I've got my stylist. Now I'm going to fucking sexy
and swag and I'm coming. Okay, I'm going to come
on this fucking golf trip. So I really want to
go on one. And we would talk to Karlie about
it the other day. I really want to go on
like a girl's golf trips. I've been on boys ones.
Speaker 4 (33:24):
Oh no, they do not even come there. They do
not even compare. We have so much fun. If we
want to take a whole off, we take a whole off.
If we want to quit mid round, we do, at
least I do.
Speaker 1 (33:35):
Oh yes, Okay. She did take like nine holes off
at some point because her back was literally.
Speaker 3 (33:39):
Screaming okay, and it was raining, and I was like
bug this, and.
Speaker 6 (33:42):
The abandoned, abandoned guy drove her out to us, and
she's like coming up, like the queen queen dropped up
the abandoned trails.
Speaker 3 (33:51):
Oh that's amazing.
Speaker 2 (33:53):
Yeah, No, i' met for this girls, one hundred percent.
This is the kind of retirement life I want, you know,
skipped a few holes, few more cocktails than the play golf.
All right, next time, don't don't you dare even think
about organizing one without Aaron.
Speaker 1 (34:05):
I can't believe you did that.
Speaker 4 (34:06):
Okay, one thing I will say, so, I've been on
a couple of these golf like trips or gone to
these golf destinations. Why are they so goddamn hard to
get to and four hour drives and in running through
the mud to get there? Like, I want to go
to a resort where it's like one plane to get there,
(34:26):
one twenty minute car rid from the airport, and then
it's just like luxury, beautiful course.
Speaker 1 (34:30):
Whereas have you been to Pinehurst? Oh my goodness, no,
let's manifest a girl's trip to Pinehurst?
Speaker 5 (34:37):
Sounds so official though. Will they let me check my handicap?
Speaker 1 (34:41):
No, we'll just go there.
Speaker 2 (34:43):
They let my wife on, and she's like, she doesn't
let Pinehurst number two, which is like where they play
like the US Open and Women's US Open, but.
Speaker 1 (34:50):
It's a public course. I mean, it's a resort course.
It's not.
Speaker 2 (34:53):
Yeah, yeah, it's you can get on oh cool. Yeah,
And there's a really cool little path. Three there is
what's it called again, It's called the Cradle.
Speaker 1 (34:59):
It's the Cradle is so fun, so fun, it's a
very relaxed. Anyone can go.
Speaker 3 (35:05):
You can go if you want.
Speaker 5 (35:06):
That sounds my speed.
Speaker 1 (35:07):
Last thing about the golf and that we need to
get into your actual life, not that golf is not
your actual life. So you have a baby named Sailor,
who is the cutest child on one of the cutest
children on Instagram. Sorry, mel, I can't say that Aaron's
is the cutest inst when we have baby cries.
Speaker 3 (35:23):
I was like, I am deeply beautiful.
Speaker 1 (35:27):
But you've been super open about how golf was really
helpful to you after having given birth to Sailor. Why
was it such an important thing for you after becoming
a mom?
Speaker 4 (35:37):
So I dealt with postpartum depression after having say and
I just felt this weird, you know, loss of identity
and the real struggle of figuring out the balancing act
and there's never any real balance. But I just was
having major blues. And that year, the first year that
(35:58):
I went to that eight am tournament at the top
of the year. My husband said, what is your hobby?
He like challenged me to get a hobby, and I
was like, oh, yeah, I used to play soccer and
surf back in the day. He's like, okay, back in
the day. What do you do today as a hobby?
And I was like, I go to yoga, I hang
out with my friends. He's like, cool, that is something
you need to.
Speaker 5 (36:16):
Keep up your basic health. What do you do for fun?
Speaker 4 (36:19):
I was like, God, I don't know watch Real Housewives
and so please get a hobby. So I'm like, okay,
I'm gonna get a hobby. And I dragged my feet
for four months. I get invited to go to that tournament.
I'm like, I think my hobby's being forced upon me
right now. And then I fall in love with golf
and then I just lean in so hardcore with you know,
the lessons and getting cute fits in and outfits for it,
(36:42):
and just.
Speaker 5 (36:43):
Like my whole algorithm has changed.
Speaker 4 (36:46):
And then I stopped giving a frick about everything else
that was like riddling me with anxiety, like I don't know,
I think I put too much thought into so many
other things and trying to be the perfect mother and
you know, really hard on myself if I couldn't.
Speaker 5 (37:01):
Figure it out. And then I was like all of that.
Speaker 4 (37:04):
Just dissipated, and then all I cared about was getting
my swing plane right.
Speaker 5 (37:08):
And so I think it's like.
Speaker 4 (37:10):
And then when you're out on the course, as you
guys know, being around nature and breathing in that fresh
oxygen and like I said, everything about it can be
so euphoric when you get into this rhythm and good vibes.
Speaker 5 (37:23):
And I would go.
Speaker 4 (37:24):
Out there by myself. I'm not the person that needs
to have a special tea time or a special party
or need to go with anyone. I walk up there,
I'm like, I'm walking on, do you have availability? And
I would get partnered with, you know, the local sixty
to eighty year old men and it was the best time.
And just being cut off from everything else that I do,
(37:44):
it just man, it fed me in so many ways.
And I would get to do that between like knocking
off work and then before picking up Sailor from school.
So I had this period of just me time and
that is such a gift, such a privi and I'm
just so grateful that I carve out those moments, because
(38:04):
otherwise what I was doing before is I get off work,
sit through traffic, go home, and then just say I'm bored,
so I kind of snacking. I'll get a snack and
then I'll watch a show and maybe I'll take a nap,
and then I'll get sailor, and then that gets so monotonous,
and just I could see looking back, I could see
why I had this brain fog and this slump, and
(38:25):
then I would trip about weird things too, like what
am I going to.
Speaker 5 (38:28):
Pick a fight with Joshua about today?
Speaker 4 (38:30):
Like you know, now, I'm like, I don't even care
where you are if you text me back, and if
you even called me back, Like sometimes i'd be like
you called me, what were you doing for the last
five minutes?
Speaker 3 (38:41):
You didn't call me back?
Speaker 5 (38:42):
And now I'm like, literally, do not call me. I'm busy.
Speaker 1 (38:46):
I'm busy getting fresh oxygen and looking cute, play.
Speaker 3 (38:49):
With at old Jeffrey.
Speaker 4 (38:51):
Yeah, yeah, like Alan and I are having a great
time and he just offered me a beers So.
Speaker 1 (38:59):
Sure, that's so real, and it just speaks to the
power of how great this game is.
Speaker 4 (39:06):
Yeah, it's I mean man like between that, between golf
and therapy, I couldn't be more mentally sound.
Speaker 3 (39:13):
Right now, that's awesome. Do you walk? Then? Do you
walk or do you get caught?
Speaker 4 (39:17):
I recently started walking because of back pain and everything,
and oh, such a good exercise.
Speaker 5 (39:22):
Now I love walking.
Speaker 4 (39:23):
And then sometimes when I bring like a full lunch
and drink, so I need a cart. Yeah, but I
really want one of those smart carts now that like
walks on its us.
Speaker 5 (39:36):
I'm fully entering.
Speaker 1 (39:37):
My retire, the automated electric carts control. Yes, I have one.
I have one. And her name is Susan Mortified.
Speaker 3 (39:52):
She's so ashamed of shocks me every day.
Speaker 1 (39:56):
The video it's shiny and white. Is it worth it?
Speaker 4 (40:00):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (40:00):
And my husband great for me for Christmas a couple
of years ago. She's so cute. Susan gets a little
lazy sometimes she's a little lazy Susan every once in
a while.
Speaker 4 (40:09):
But they're so hilarious When I see them on the course,
I die laughing because they're just so funny to look at.
Speaker 1 (40:15):
Stop she's so disappointed.
Speaker 4 (40:18):
Wait, mal, what is your beef with them? Because like,
I don't want to show up looking like a crazy person.
Like what is from a golfer?
Speaker 3 (40:26):
Dumb?
Speaker 5 (40:27):
Yeah, they do look silly.
Speaker 2 (40:28):
I just wouldn't have like one of my friends, one
of my buddys husband that i'll play golf with. I
won't name him because I don't want embarrass him, but
like it looks stupid, like it's moving around and.
Speaker 1 (40:36):
It's like I don't care what I look like.
Speaker 2 (40:40):
I'm about saying it here, so I'll love you to death,
but like, yeah, it's just I would never be seen.
Speaker 3 (40:45):
Dead with something of that.
Speaker 1 (40:47):
Okay, I won't bring it for our golf trip.
Speaker 5 (40:49):
You don't bring all the there's okay, mel there's one.
Speaker 4 (40:53):
There's a new sexy one on the horizon and it
is supposed to be like the apple of these.
Speaker 5 (40:59):
Golf cart things and.
Speaker 4 (41:01):
It has like a little touchpad and like GPS and
we'll tell you your yardage and it's thin and I am.
Speaker 5 (41:09):
About to drop a mortgage payment on it.
Speaker 1 (41:12):
We got to get a sponsorship for Aaron Limroads.
Speaker 3 (41:15):
You might as well get a buggy, a golf buggy.
Speaker 5 (41:16):
What's a golf buddy like a caddy buggy?
Speaker 1 (41:20):
She means a golf cart. She means a golf cart
like an actual one with the English call it a buggy.
Speaker 2 (41:27):
We call it buggy Buggy. That's so much cuter, isn't
it cute? Like, Hey, do you want to get buggy today?
Speaker 5 (41:32):
Oh, that's cute.
Speaker 3 (41:34):
We'll use it on the golf trip.
Speaker 2 (41:35):
Maybe that could be the girl's golf trip name Buggies,
the Buggies Buggy.
Speaker 1 (41:46):
So, Aaron, outside of your budding golf career, you have
an actual job as a host correspondent for e News.
You have your own show, Ease The Rundown, right, the Rundown,
the Rundown. Okay, So take us back to the very
beginning of becoming what you are today. We've talked a
little bit about this and how you had to go
to Asia to really establish yourself, and I think that
(42:08):
your story is incredible and it also goes to show
that no one's path in this business is linear. It's well,
I would love it if you could tell the people.
Speaker 7 (42:15):
Yeah you want the beginning, the begin Yeah, I love
the beginning. Okay, because that current is really easy to
look at you on Instagram and be like, wow, look
how cute, but no one knows what actually took to
do this.
Speaker 4 (42:26):
It's funny because it's like my story's unconventional already from
a broadcast standpoint. I went to broadcast journalism school. I
studied that at Chapman University, and I always knew I
wanted to be a host and a broadcaster. And my
senior year, I was torn between going to Billings, Montana
(42:48):
to become a local news correspondent, because that's usually how
it goes. You write out of school, you go to
a very small local news market, and so I was
either going to go there or Singapore. And Singapore came
into the picture because during my senior year of college,
I went and shot a documentary in Singapore because I
was doing like a documentary program as.
Speaker 5 (43:07):
Well, and I learned about Southeast Asia.
Speaker 4 (43:09):
I'm half Filipino, so I just felt like, oh, okay,
this is cool.
Speaker 5 (43:14):
These are my people. I belong here.
Speaker 4 (43:16):
And when I was in Singapore, everyone was asking me
what I planned to do once I graduated, and I
was like, well, I guess I'm going to Montana, And
they're like, wait, you should be a host out here
in Southeast Asia. You are half Asian. You have the
look that they're looking for out here, which is like
hand Asian, Eurasian, anything, half Asian and.
Speaker 5 (43:37):
I was like, oh, okay, maybe this could be a thing.
Speaker 4 (43:40):
And then I started sending cold emails to agencies, producers, directors,
anyone I knew who was in the business, friends that
I had met while doing my documentary. I was like, please,
here's my reel, here's my headshots, my bio, everything. And
then after I was done doing the documentary, I went
back home like awaiting my graduation day and having so
much anxiety. And then I was like sitting in my
(44:03):
commencement speech checking emails like a real business woman does,
and I get an email from someone who I randomly
emailed and he was like the Ryan Seacrest of Asia,
Ali Pettigrew. He's such a big part of my career
journey and why I went. But he was the biggest
host out in Southeast Asia, based in Singapore, and he
(44:24):
was like, I'm in La. Let's meet up and talk
about what it is you're trying to do. And I said, great,
let's meet up. I'm in LA and I bought him lunch,
fresh college grad, bought him lunch.
Speaker 5 (44:37):
He'll never forget it.
Speaker 1 (44:38):
I can't believe he let you buy lunch.
Speaker 4 (44:40):
I was that person that like, went, I'm going to
the bathroom and I go pay and you don't really
have a choice. But I just wanted to leave a
good impression. And I had in college. I was just
so business minded. I had business cards and everything, a
whole website before my senior year. So I meet with
him and he said, look, I'm moving back to LA
to start my career out here. I will give you
(45:02):
all of my connections in Singapore. I will open those
doors for you. It's now about what you do in
those doors, in those rooms. And he's like, I could
see that you're driven, you're hungry, you're talented, So I
think you should just give yourself three months to make
it or break it. And I was like, okay, done,
let's do it. Saved all my graduation money and I
(45:23):
told my parents I'm moving.
Speaker 5 (45:25):
They were like, what are you kidding me?
Speaker 4 (45:27):
And over the summer, I took a business trip and
my parents went with me to make sure it was
like a realistic thing and if it was safe. My
dad is from the Philippines, which is one of the
most dangerous places it can be, and so he was like,
I've never been in Singapore. And then we go and
it's Disneyland, of Asia. It's so safe, it's so clean,
it's so future expensive though very expensive, but if you
(45:51):
live like a local and eat like local food, you
can really.
Speaker 5 (45:55):
Like you can live on a budget. And I did,
like I was buying seven dollars meals or so.
Speaker 7 (46:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (46:01):
I took this business trip.
Speaker 4 (46:02):
My parents were there and I took meetings and everyone said, great,
we could see ourselves working with you. They have all
of the networks that we have out in the US,
like Discovery, TLC and E and Food and Fox and
every NBC Asia. So they said cool, like we could
work with you. When are you going to move here?
And I was like, well, you are you going to
give me the job? And then I'm I move here?
And then I'm like, that's not how it works. So
(46:24):
I just moved there and I did what Allie said,
which was give yourself the three months. If you don't
make a single dime, if it doesn't work out for you,
just move back, like just do it. So I did it,
and those the three months like turned into two years.
I worked on a myriad of different projects, worked with
tons of different networks and had such an awesome experience,
(46:45):
and then e Asia fell into my Lap while I
was there, and I remember watching e Asia before I
even left for Singapore, and I said to myself, I
could see myself doing this. And then a producer randomly
found my real from a different show that I had done.
He saw my website and he said, I see that
you're trained in broadcast journalism. We're looking for a new
(47:08):
e post and correspondent. I said, that's exactly what I
want to do. And then I worked as a producer
and a host out in e Asia. And then as
I was in e Asia, I took a trip home,
just randomly back to LA to visit my family. But
I emailed the team that was faced in LA because
there's an international team out in America, and so I
(47:29):
emailed them saying, I'm visiting my family.
Speaker 5 (47:31):
Can I come to the e headquarters? And they said, yeah,
come on in.
Speaker 4 (47:35):
Actually, let's shoot an e Asia special direct from Hollywood.
And as I was shooting that e Asia special that
I had manifested, then a casting and talent person saw
me in the studio in real time as I was
shooting this special that was for Asia, and she was like,
who is that person? And then she tracked me down
sent me an email and said hear, and like, let's
(47:56):
hop on a call. We're looking for a new host
and correspondent in LA. Interested And I said yes, I
moved all the way to Asia to essentially do this
one day. Yeah, And it was all this amazing like
God timing and all this stuff, and so I yeah,
took those meetings and then they ended up hiring me
and I left Singapore all to get back to E LA.
Speaker 5 (48:17):
That's like the long and the short of it.
Speaker 2 (48:18):
So when you're doing that, the rundown this is I'm
just quite intrigued, like are you doing the research yourself,
Like are you like figuring out what story is you're
going to talk about?
Speaker 3 (48:26):
Or does someone kind of give you a guideline.
Speaker 4 (48:27):
It's a mix, Like I have my producers and my
team and we're all talking about the stories that are
trending and what we're interested in, what I'm interested in,
and then we just kind of create a list of Okay,
these are the hot topics, this is what our audience likes,
and then we kind of just go from there. Yeah,
it's collaborative.
Speaker 1 (48:46):
So, I mean, I think that your story is so
amazing because I get that question a lot too. How
do I get your job, and you're kind of like like,
it's a very unique journey for each person. But you
have to be willing to grind and put yourself in
really uncomfortable settings and to send cold emails and to
show up not knowing anybody, putting yourself into those rooms.
(49:08):
It could be really scary.
Speaker 4 (49:10):
Yeah, I wasn't going to stop at anything until I
got to exactly where I wanted to be.
Speaker 5 (49:15):
And I think that.
Speaker 4 (49:17):
I don't know, I think a lot of people do
have that grit, but sometimes people have this mental block,
like they.
Speaker 5 (49:22):
Get in their own way. And on the days when I.
Speaker 4 (49:24):
Wasn't working or I was in between projects because I
wasn't a full time person for a long time, I
took those days to send more cold emails and to
you know, Instagram wasn't that big back then, so I
couldn't really leverage it. But you know, if it was
a DM or trying to get in contact with someone
who I knew was a producer, I'm just like always
(49:44):
sending those things out. And even when I get complacent
in present time like today, I'll do that same thing
if I want to work with a certain brand or
if I want to work on I don't know, a
different project. I'm constantly keeping myself busy, like putting into
place for the future.
Speaker 3 (50:01):
So what does like a typical day in the life
of Aaron look like?
Speaker 2 (50:04):
And how do you balance that, you know, being a
mother as well? Like I always love asking these questions
because I find it quite obviously challenging, and it's it's
constantly evolving, isn't it. And like, you know, I have
a fifty month old and so it's just you know,
each month, I feel like it's different, but I'm just
very Yeah, I just want to know basically what you
do on a day to day basis and how you
managed to because I feel like balance is such a
(50:24):
it's not the right word because it's never really but
people think balance fifty to fifty.
Speaker 3 (50:28):
It never is, is it.
Speaker 2 (50:29):
So I just wanted to kind of grasp that and
how you handle that basically.
Speaker 4 (50:34):
Yeah, I would say it's like I am giving myself
nearly one hundred percent to the one thing that I'm
doing in that moment. So like I'm here at work,
they have one hundred percent of me. That means I'm
I'm not being a partner right now, I'm not being
a mom right now, in this moment, I'm just solely
focused here. And Shonda Himes has this amazing commencement speech
(50:58):
where she talks about if you're like thriving in one area,
you're inevitably failing in the other. And maybe failing is
a really strong word, but the moments when I'm a
career woman, I'm just I'm missing a dance recital or
I'm missing the pickup or the bedtime, and so yeah,
the balance doesn't exist. But I like to have this
mentality of Okay, I can have it all, or I
(51:18):
can have whatever it is that I want, but I
can't have it all at once. And I'm so grateful
for having a supportive partner where it's like, hey, I
can't do.
Speaker 5 (51:28):
The drop off today, so because I got.
Speaker 4 (51:30):
To be in early and I have a podcast that
I'm doing, and then I have my show that I
have to shoot, and then I have an interview, and
let's like, I'm I think I could pick up Sailor,
but if I can't, are you available? And it's like
we have this really good like dance that he and
I do because all of my days are totally different,
like today, like I said, like I'm in a little
bit early so i could shoot the pod with you,
(51:51):
and then I'm shooting my show, and then we'll do
like social pieces and then an interview, and then tomorrow
I have an interview late in the afternoon, so I
get to come in a little bit later. But that
also means like I'm not going to pick up Sailor
from school, so then I'm going to get home a
little bit later, probably after dinner.
Speaker 5 (52:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (52:06):
No, I'm just so lucky to have a supportive partner
that allows me to do what it is that I
want to do, and I support him the same way.
Sometimes i feel kind of guilty because I feel like
I'm constantly leaning on him, where I'm like I can't
do the drop off at school today and I can't
do the pickup today.
Speaker 5 (52:23):
Because I do have a stack day.
Speaker 4 (52:25):
But I am the person that I do like to
make up for it the next day, where I'm like, Okay,
i was a career woman on Monday doing all the things,
and I missed every aspect of home. But on Tuesday,
we're going to Disneyland, and maybe that's my toxic mom killed,
but I like to make up and make it count after.
Speaker 3 (52:45):
Yeah, I feel you on that as well.
Speaker 2 (52:47):
So a lot of my stuff, like I'll get up
early and I'll have to do stuff and then I
have speaking engagements at night and stuff, and so I'm like, Carly,
I'm so sorry, Like I know you've had Kyle day,
Like she works remote, so like she can take and
stew drop off and like pick him up. And I
feel like, oh, I'm exactly saying. I'm like, oh shit,
I feel like mum Gil and I feel wife Gil.
And then I'm like, I actually, you really like smashed
(53:07):
my career side of stuff. And I'm like, I got
you tomorrow, or I'll try and like maneuver things around
a little bit. So I like not even the next day,
like later on, I was like, hey, I got you,
Like I'm going to try and maneuver this so i
can pick up a bit more of the slack that
you just had to pick up for me.
Speaker 1 (53:19):
But you're right.
Speaker 2 (53:20):
And I think that women especially that are trying to
pursue a career in whatever they're doing and trying to
be the best partner, best mother and all this stuff,
they really do have to be present in what they do.
And I also think that they have to have an
unbelievably supportive partner.
Speaker 3 (53:35):
I think that's the biggest thing ever.
Speaker 2 (53:38):
Like it's crazy, how like I'm so thankful that Carly
is just like a cool person with you know.
Speaker 5 (53:46):
It's so true.
Speaker 4 (53:47):
It's like I remember someone saying before I had kids,
before I was married, make sure you make the smartest decision.
Whoever you're gonna have kids with. You have to know
that that is going to be your right or freaking die.
And yeah, I just I feel so blessed by Joshua
and like the way that we get through the madness.
Speaker 2 (54:08):
I mean even with you, Kira, I mean you travel
so much. I mean you travel way more than I
am at the minute. And like Andrew's just I just
feel like Andrew's just totally yeah support. Obviously he's supported,
but he's just a cool guy. He's accepting and he's like, no, girl,
you go to your career.
Speaker 3 (54:22):
I got you, you know.
Speaker 1 (54:23):
Yeah, I don't know what it would be like if
we had kids. Turn in the mix and one day
we will figure that out. But he's very much a Okay,
go live your dream. See when you get home. Love you.
Speaker 5 (54:34):
That's actually seriously so cool because I know a.
Speaker 4 (54:37):
Lot of men that would be like, get your butt
back home, miss.
Speaker 3 (54:42):
I know a lot of women like that as well.
Speaker 1 (54:43):
Yeah, especially in the world that we work in, and
just it's a male dominated field, it's a male dominated sport,
all of that. So yeah, we're some very lucky ladies. Ladies,
the buggy crew is very blessed. The Buggy crew is
very lucky. Aaron, you mentioned the late night carpets that
you do. That that is a completely separate world from
the Rundown, right, that that's like an extra set of
(55:06):
responsibilities that you have in a way.
Speaker 4 (55:08):
Yes, Like sometimes the carpets that I cover will air
on the Rundown and sometimes they'll air exclusively on the
network for EAT.
Speaker 5 (55:16):
It's kind of like my job is so three sixty.
Speaker 4 (55:18):
It's like I do my in studio show, I'll do
field shoots, I'll do a carpet, I'll do award seasons.
Speaker 5 (55:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (55:24):
Oh, so how was your award season?
Speaker 5 (55:25):
It was actually pretty chill. Yeah, it was pretty chill.
Speaker 4 (55:28):
Watched all those films and shows, and I don't know,
I was like super crazy about all of the films.
Why do they have to be so melancholy and dramatic
and sad? Like, give me fun, give me, I don't know, inspirational.
Some of them were kind of inspirational, but a lot
of them were just sad.
Speaker 1 (55:48):
I can't believe Wickeed didn't win anything.
Speaker 3 (55:52):
Oh, bring Wicket into the mix.
Speaker 5 (55:55):
Now, I can't believe you just recently watched Wicket. But
I'm glad for you. I'm glad for you, but I'm
adding you.
Speaker 1 (56:02):
Oh my god, I wicked.
Speaker 4 (56:04):
It's like literally the biggest tragedy in cinematic history that,
like John two wasn't.
Speaker 5 (56:10):
Even nominated for director. I'm literally protesting and writing in
the streets.
Speaker 3 (56:15):
Still.
Speaker 1 (56:16):
Maybe maybe they'll save it for Sorry, Mel, this is
turned into a Wicked interview.
Speaker 3 (56:19):
This happens every every episode. Please girl, just carry on.
Speaker 1 (56:23):
It's just the Wicked corner, the Wicket corner. This is
my theory.
Speaker 3 (56:26):
I'll be back in three minutes.
Speaker 1 (56:27):
Okay, yeah, go to your bathroom break. My theory is
that they'll get nominated and win everything. It's the second
movie because they didn't want to they didn't want to
have it all happen on the first, So the second
movie they'll pick up all the awards that they were do.
Speaker 5 (56:40):
Right, Mel, I'm so mad at the Academy.
Speaker 3 (56:44):
Yeah, I agree with Kiera a.
Speaker 5 (56:47):
Little bit because I know you're witted out.
Speaker 1 (56:49):
But yeah, no, okay, Aaron, Okay, we have a few
good topic questions for you, and then we'll let you
go because I know that you've got Roberto coming to style.
Speaker 4 (56:57):
You.
Speaker 1 (56:58):
Yes, give us your favorite red carpet moment, and then
your most awkward.
Speaker 5 (57:04):
Like best story, like.
Speaker 1 (57:06):
The thing that you look back at and you're like, wow,
I crushed that, or wow, that was an amazing interaction
with this person.
Speaker 4 (57:12):
Well, the first thing that comes to mind, and he'll
preach this karat is Jeff Goldbloom talking about Wicked.
Speaker 1 (57:19):
He plays the Wizard. Now, wait, what was so great
about it? Tell us everything.
Speaker 3 (57:26):
I'm so over Wicked.
Speaker 4 (57:28):
No, I've had so many fun moments, but for some reason,
it's the thing that just is so fresh in my
mind because Jeff gold Bloom also in Jurassic Park.
Speaker 5 (57:36):
Mel Okay, he's an icon the wit.
Speaker 4 (57:41):
He was just so lovely and you know that iconic voice,
and I made him do like ASMR for me. So anyway,
we're done talking about Wicked. Jeff Goldbloom a recent iconic,
super fun I crushed your moment.
Speaker 2 (57:53):
So when I was asking Conlie my wife this, you're like,
cause she's in social media and this is probably showing
my age. Ever was just slowlight day, which I'm very
embarrassed about it a s M.
Speaker 3 (58:01):
A Is that like noises?
Speaker 4 (58:04):
Yeah, it's like when you don't hear anyone really it's
like really quiet, and you'll hear like someone drinking gulps
of water or they're like clicking their fingers on something
that makes it's really tiny.
Speaker 5 (58:15):
That makes it like a whisper.
Speaker 1 (58:17):
It's like we're doing a podcast and we're gonna whisper.
Speaker 2 (58:23):
Okay, guys, wicked is over.
Speaker 3 (58:28):
That's so rude.
Speaker 5 (58:30):
I'll never let it go. No one will, okay, most awkward.
Speaker 6 (58:39):
Oh.
Speaker 4 (58:40):
I probably can't say names, but I do remember there
is a very famous like teeny bopper actor from a
very popular teen show and he has a very public,
high profile relationship with a huge singer and everyone on
the carpet was asking him about his relationship and I
wasn't gonna go se bird, selacious or sleazy. I just said,
(59:02):
what is your favorite song of X? And he told
me He's like, oh, it's Da Dada. And then right
after his publicist comes and like evisceraates me and.
Speaker 5 (59:11):
Is like, why are you asking about pop?
Speaker 4 (59:14):
And I'm like, because literally everyone on this carpet dis
She's like, can't hear that footage? She like yells at
me in front of my peers, in front of these celebrities,
in front of everyone, and I'm like, ma'am.
Speaker 5 (59:26):
Let me get out of my face. I wish I
said that.
Speaker 1 (59:28):
I didn't.
Speaker 5 (59:29):
I don't have the balls too, but I was just like,
I just left speechless. I'm like, I get I guess
we can't.
Speaker 1 (59:35):
Why was she freaking out of you when everyone was
asking that.
Speaker 4 (59:38):
I don't think she heard everyone else asking that, and
for some reason she heard me asking that and then
she was like, you can't air that footage.
Speaker 1 (59:45):
Okay. Last thing, Aaron I texted you about this. We
do this segment called the Shush of the Week. We
don't always do this segment, but when we do, it's
always very fun because we like to shush things. You
can shush anything you want, anyone you want, serious, not serious, food,
pop culture, Wicked, whatever it is.
Speaker 3 (01:00:10):
I'm joking. I love Wicked.
Speaker 1 (01:00:12):
But Aaron, what is your shush of the week?
Speaker 4 (01:00:15):
My shish of the week is country club attire slash
requirements or rules?
Speaker 1 (01:00:21):
What is it? What is it called dress code?
Speaker 5 (01:00:23):
Don't you called dress code? Why can't I just go
out in jeans or georts?
Speaker 3 (01:00:27):
I know, I know, I want to wear orts and.
Speaker 5 (01:00:30):
I want to wear a tank top.
Speaker 4 (01:00:31):
I want to wear shorts in a tank top, and
I want to let my belly show, and I want
to like I don't know, I want to defy gravity
dress cover no Aaran, It's.
