(00:23):
to Quiet Please, Mel and I are very honored to
be joined by such a special guest.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
I think that's how you would describe.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
It, Mel Right.
Speaker 4 (00:33):
No, Basically I was under pressure to book a guest,
and I thought, what other person could I wish more
for than the current US Women's Open caddy champion?
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Don't Jeff Brighten everybody?
Speaker 5 (00:47):
Can you believe it? Mel?
Speaker 4 (00:49):
No, As someone as useless as you, I actually cannot
believe that you managed to pull that off.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
Mate.
Speaker 5 (00:54):
We're off a friendly start.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
As I'm so happy to have you, Jeff, just a
warm welcome.
Speaker 5 (01:00):
Thank you. But what has happened to this podcast? I mean,
the guest you started off with, and Michelle Wee and
all the glamour and now you said it maybe episode
two hundred mil you said, but what episodes of this?
Speaker 3 (01:11):
Yeah, we're not a two hundred yet mate.
Speaker 4 (01:13):
So the problem is, Jeff, is that Kira has been
like basically busting herself to like do all that actually
be professional in this, and I thought, I've got to
really step up to the plate here. I thought, right,
he's definitely going to say yes, and it's you.
Speaker 5 (01:25):
Oh, I see absolutely.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
This is what happens when you win a major or
caddy for somebody who's winning a major.
Speaker 5 (01:33):
Well, I was thinking, let's be honest, if miss Maya
Stark hadn't won the US Open, would I even be
talking to you guys?
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Maybe episode later, but not episode twenty.
Speaker 5 (01:42):
But yeah, we're always.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Going to have you on the show.
Speaker 5 (01:45):
Here. I am here, I am there.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
He is God, congratulations Jeff. We are very happy for you.
He're just you deserve all the love, even from Mel.
Speaker 4 (01:58):
I know it's difficult for me to say it, but yes,
I was very happy for you, Jeff, very happy for you.
Speaker 5 (02:03):
Thank you, thank you. I've got a big smile on
my face. It was pretty cool to watch and just
be just be part of. You know, it's such a buzz,
such a buzz.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
So for those that don't know, Jeff was on the
bag for my Stark when she won the Goose Women's
Open at Aaron Hills. You've also been just a long
time Caddy on the bag for Colin Montgomery.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
You're past comedian, maybe still kind of a comedian.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
He's a massively failed comedian, aren't we all?
Speaker 5 (02:31):
Thank you?
Speaker 1 (02:32):
And now you're now you're on our show, so you've
really made it to the big leagues.
Speaker 5 (02:37):
This, this, this is big for me. I'm very very excited.
I love listening to you guys. It's usually like two
friends having just a catch up and you you have
some cool guests on and I enjoy listening to it.
So really cool that you asked me to be on.
Hopefully I can, you know, go an hour mil without
annoying you, which I've never managed to do before.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
No, you've never managed to do that much.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
It's too late.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
We were already in the annoyed territory before we even
got on the show.
Speaker 4 (02:59):
Jeff is about as useful as a chocolate teapot in
anything that he ever does. I've stayed with him way
too many times. In fact, Jeff, I remember the last
time I stayed with you was in Phoenix in my
final year of playing. And to be fair, you were
absolutely fantastic with Kai. I will give you that you
were serenading him every night, because you know you like
you're the entertainer. But we asked Jeff probably on the
(03:20):
Wednesday to go and get toilet paper, and in fact
we've still not received it.
Speaker 5 (03:24):
Jeff, I don't remember that, so what did I do?
Speaker 3 (03:30):
It was in Phoenix. No, you definitely weren't there because
you don't you have two Gin and Tonics and you're
out of it.
Speaker 5 (03:36):
I'm I'm sorry I haven't got out. Have you got
toilet paper since, Mal, because that was over a year ago.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
Yes, yes I did.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
But thank you for being a great addition to the
house that week, Jeff by being pretty.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
Useless, So I really appreciate you. It's always fun to stay
with you.
Speaker 5 (03:51):
We had fun. Yeah, we had fun with a few
caddies this week for the KPMG. It's fun as you
they are be and b's are more fun than the hotels. Right,
m hm?
Speaker 2 (04:01):
How did you guys meet? How long have you guys
known each other?
Speaker 5 (04:04):
I forced myself into males company like she just would
not Yeah, and it was just Mal, Can I have
your number? Can I hang out with you? No? Piss off? Going?
Leave me alone? Man? Can we be friends? Can we
be friends? Leave me alone? And then when I was
out in groups with you, Caddy, and I'd just be
like trying to Caddy and you just just look at
me like the biggest loser ever. And I'm like, God,
I must win Male's approval. And then I don't know,
(04:24):
I think it was actually when I came out, you went, oh, yeah,
now you're okay, you're gay. Now I suppose I have
to start liking you, and.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
You're now we have to be friends.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
We can be friends now now now we have a
common ground.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
How did you come out, Jeff slowly difficult?
Speaker 5 (04:39):
Well, actually, I mean I just told people that's great.
It was a whole I did it. Oh, Like I
did a tour. I went around the country. But you know,
I'm lucky doing the traveling in different careers. I've got
good friends dotted around. And I went and like this
coming out to or telling everyone, like spending money, going
to like Newcastle or London or wherever and tell my
friends again. They're like, all right, you're not bothered. Fine,
(05:01):
well I've just flown out here to tell you. I'll
get cared. And then I was like, Male, did set
me up with that scratch video? You know, we did
the video and then just did that you know, we've
you know, of a public scale within within work, and
then that was it.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
And it was seriously Jeff, like, I am really proud
of you for doing that because you know, you're a
caddie and you're in very kind of a male dominant world.
You're obviously very popular on tour with the ladies, which
now makes sense, but like I can imagine it could
have been quite difficult for you. But you're very lucky
that you've got some really you know, good mates like
Olie and all the boys that literally don't care, mate,
because we just love you for who you are, and
(05:35):
it's not an easy thing to do, and honestly, like
from the bottom of heart, like we were really proud
of you.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
It was a cool thing for you to do.
Speaker 5 (05:41):
Thank you, and you know it feels I mean it
was like five or six years ago but scary right,
but then but then it didn't have to be and
then it became the easiest, most normal thing in the world.
And you're just met with love and indifference from everyone
around you, and it's it's pretty life changing life for
from and that nothing really changes, you know, the relationships
are still is, You're still the same person, you know,
(06:02):
I'm still a caddy, can still reader straight put you know, it's.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Still failed comedian.
Speaker 5 (06:10):
See I laughed, Mel, Thank you. Thanks to you. It
was people like you and and and other golfers on
tour that just really are authentically themselves and that, you know,
being around that just gave me motivation and a bit
of courage to like, okay, I can be that as well.
So you were a big part in because it wasn't
a light bulb moment, but sometimes it just takes people
(06:32):
a bit more time to be themselves. But you know,
you just everyone in their own time, in their own
their own way, and you know, you get there. So
it's been good, good since. And yeah, I'm just loving
being back on the LPGA and getting to see you
a bit more male and just yeah, just very really lucky.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
So you're back on the LPGA now.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
You were a longtime caddie for con Montgomery Monty as
people will know him. When we went out to dinner
in London, you told this really funny story about Allie
messing up when you found out that you were going
to get to caddy for Montie.
Speaker 5 (07:08):
He's one of my very good friends now, but Colin
was my sporting hero. So I was like a dream
to caddy for him, and I think the boys had
did a wind up. And then when I did get
the opportunity to work with Colin, he text and said
can we have a conversation and I think I text back,
piss off, Allie. I'm not falling for this again.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
This is Olie Brett. He's a caddy on the LPGA
tour or now the PGA tour.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
He's a LPGA LPG.
Speaker 5 (07:36):
I thought it was a boy's winding me up. I
deleted the text, and then it was it was Colin
on the phone, and I nearly dropped it because I
was God, it's Colin. And then the interview that had
with him was quite funny because you know, I went
down to his club in London and we're going to
have like kind of just coffee in a bit of
practice to see if I get the job. And then
he said, oh, have you had breakfast yet? And he said,
I said, no, this is all it's a breakfast anyway.
(07:57):
He was a president of this club. So the full
English break Christ is called the full Monty, right, so
he said the full Montage. Will you have the full
Monty as well? Now what would you say in that situation, well,
job interview, what would you say? What?
Speaker 4 (08:10):
You just say yes, ja if you don't need to
look more into it, and obviously now what a full
Monty is, but like you just say yes, you would
love a bit of full Monte.
Speaker 5 (08:16):
You would just you would just say, yes, have the
you know, have it that. I said yes in my head,
but what came out was I love the avocado and toast, please,
And he said what I said, avocado and toast, and
he just even the waiter just looked at me and
went of course. And I was like And then I
was like, oh god, and I was sorry, and I said, Colin,
I don't know if I've got the gig or the job,
(08:37):
but if I have, there's a first bad club. I am.
So I don't know why that came out. And he's like, yeah,
he's it. Yeah, that's a shocker. And then like you've
got the job with him and did a few years
and just brilliant man. And you know, I would go
back to that golf club and would hang out, you know,
play practice of breakfast and he would say, right, we'll
meet for breakfast. No avocados.
Speaker 4 (08:57):
Just very talented in a sense that not not in
many things, but he's been talented at doing impressions of
people and he does an unbelievable pression of call him Montgomery.
He was a bit of your idol grow and it
wasn't he be he being Scottish and being Scottish, Yeah.
Speaker 5 (09:08):
And he was a man and Europe's number one player
eight times and so a big part of the reason
I get into golf. So for my first golf in
memory nine years old, switching on the Ryder Cup in
Valderama when he got the winning point said he was
a captain, like just seeing everyone run on to the green,
and I just was hooked in golf ever since. And
then like all the Ryder Cups, he performed in se
and I got to work with him and and and
(09:30):
spend all that time together and he's just learnt so
much and he's brilliant. And that Champions Tour is great
because you've got all the legends of the day still
competing and still doing it exactly the same way when
he did when they were like winning majors and all that.
So brilliant.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
All right, let's talk about how you got into Caddy
and Jeff, because it might be the luckiest card you've
ever got.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
Was when you carried at Tienbury.
Speaker 5 (09:50):
Was it lucky?
Speaker 4 (09:51):
Yes, obviously it was lucky. Not quite when the US
Women's out, but it was it was It was second.
Speaker 5 (09:57):
No, that was all skill, That was all Maya darling,
that was all my I just I mean, how good
was she?
Speaker 3 (10:04):
Just stop getting distracted? Does caddy in first? Mate? It
turned okay at the British Women's British Open this used
to be an.
Speaker 5 (10:10):
Eight hour story. I've got it down thirty seconds. Had
a corporate job in Ireland, going all right, this is
what I want to do. I don't know. I always
wanted to caddy the Women's opens coming to Turnbury twenty fifteen.
I was brought up there. Incredible course, one of the best.
She'd be back on the open road so hopefully in time. Anyway,
I blag Gig as a local caddy, just sent a
few emails because I did know the course. I get
(10:31):
gin young Cole Wow Lucky, who was maybe nineteen at
the time and never went over to the UK. Did
one practice round with her. I think she shot Simmon
under and thinking oh oh right, okay, and then the whole
way she was leading, was up by a couple coming
over the last few holes NB Park, I made a
couple of birdies, won the Grand Slam, and my first
week on as a caddie, I get second and like
(10:54):
just get a taste of what I want to do,
and like then went back to my corporate job and thought, well,
this is shit. I can't do this. I want to
be a caddy. And then from that Caroline Headwall, who
were playing with the first two days at Turnbury, said
you want to come out on tour lead a corporate
job and I've been annoying male and everyone else ever since.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
I love that. That was a really good departure from
eight hours.
Speaker 5 (11:15):
Yeah, I know I've cut that down. But you know,
to be a professional cat, what is a professional caddy?
You work for a professional golfer, right, But to be
one you either know someone or get very lucky. So
I didn't know anyone. I got lucky. I did send
a few mails. I did no Turnbury. I've got a
lucky break with gin Young and then you try and
make away from there. But I did get very very lucky.
Speaker 4 (11:34):
Because didn't you used to work before all this, didn't
you and before your corporate job you used to work
in the nineteen thirties.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
Oh what, Oh yeah, I'm eighteen to thirty.
Speaker 4 (11:41):
So you know them cheap holidays that people go to
to Maga Loaf to get syphilis.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
That's what Jeff did.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
Sorry, which part of that? Did you work at the
reser work or well?
Speaker 5 (11:51):
I was not the syphilist provider. I don't know if
it's a thing in America, but like people in Britain
like to go to all these holiday destinations all over,
like the Greek Islands, being at Beetha Magalooth and just
party just you know, so I was like a rep.
I was like a party rep, taking them on boat
trips and booze cruises and DJ nights and stuff like
I still wore pajamas to bed. I wasn't cool enough
(12:12):
to do that, you know, just rather a cup of
tea and like, you know, all these lads are like
at the club you So I did that. And then
they said, well, we're not firing the Jeff, but we
actually think they'd be more suited to the Grannies and
Grammars and the Thompson Gold hotels. And I remember being
rage and and then I got there of the first
day in the north of the island at the sticks
and all the grannies, and I was like, oh my god,
they're absolutely right at the great time.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
So these are my paper Yeah.
Speaker 5 (12:37):
And then I did that for like five years, and
then I was like working on cruise ships trying to
like entertain but then they would just stick me in
like a hippost costume and make to do the YMCA
for a load of like people that just didn't even
understand me.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
Jeffrey, you have got some good stories. You have got
some good stories, mate, I must admit you have maybe
chuckle a few times.
Speaker 1 (12:55):
So was your dream to be a comedian too, or
what ended up happening with that?
Speaker 5 (13:00):
Well? It was and then I did it for a
wee bit and realized, God, I'm not funny. People just
genuinely won't laughing, and I thought the microphone wasn't on,
they weren't laughing. And then I did Okay, but I
was like really fat as well and just shy and awkward.
Speaker 3 (13:15):
Like he was massive when I first made Massive hang
on Jack.
Speaker 4 (13:22):
Well, the problem is, though, Kira, he still wears the
same size clothing now and he's actually lost like one
hundred pounds, so he looks ridiculous clothing.
Speaker 5 (13:29):
Yeah, that male is genetics.
Speaker 3 (13:31):
Oh yeah, it goes out.
Speaker 4 (13:32):
He comes up to me on and on tour ones
and he goes, look, you know, can you can you
help me? I'm fat and I want to lose some weight.
And I said, right, I said, well you know what
you should do? I said, you should probably like go
to the gym, probably not drink as much ail, and
you know, maybe watch what you eat.
Speaker 3 (13:48):
No, I didn't work for me. It's genetics and.
Speaker 4 (13:49):
It and I went, well, it's fucking not as he's
in two packs of Harry Bow every night and seven gentics.
Speaker 5 (13:56):
It's Harry boy, that's my very sweet sweets, Harry boys.
My vase, I'm not the nineteen twenties farmer, you know,
like a drink GM and Tonic xaling you know. Yeah.
But we had a fabulous dinner in London. Care I
really enjoyed that. Of course, of course, the last you know,
ended face down in a bowl of dolling.
Speaker 3 (14:14):
I Care told this the other week.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
Well, I would love to hear it from your perspective.
Speaker 5 (14:18):
Though. You and your husband was such a good company.
That restaurant was so nice. I love going out for
dinner with Marina. You always eat well. You've got a
three course meal for just under four grand.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
It's great Marina Alex who just retired from the LPGA,
and we went to jim Conna, which is a very
fancy spot in Mayfair.
Speaker 5 (14:37):
I was lovely, lovely and it was like and all
the food coming around very dark, so I get it.
And then you had went to the bathroom were coming back.
There was some pruly lit steps and you just I
mean you fell down and then everyone waits for how
you're going to handle it, and the way you just
got up the sat in the grace and just looked
(14:57):
around the room and went, yeah, everybody, I'm still hot,
and then just sat down and sat down, and I
just thought she is the coolest person. We had a great,
great night.
Speaker 3 (15:08):
Actually, pageant is that is it comes through, doesn't it.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
I think I even did like a hen Okay.
Speaker 5 (15:15):
It was so cool that we just got up and
then just got back eating yournny.
Speaker 4 (15:19):
It was lovely being away. Oh can we talk about
KPMG this week? Obviously this is going to come out
after KPMG. What's your thoughts on the course. First of all,
you played nightte In Hopper Arms, didn't you. So what's
your thoughts on the golf course here at Friscoy.
Speaker 5 (15:41):
I like it. I did the Senior PGA here with
Colin two years ago, shortly after it just opened, and
I think they came for a practice day as well.
So it's a big golf course, vast, you know, and
a lot too, so kind of like an Aaron Hill's
feeling that that regard, you know, and a lot of people.
You walk it and you think, oh, there's not much
to it. Then a day like today Wendy and like
(16:03):
the course has some teeth again, like the last two majors.
It's suiting the longer hitters, the drivers probably the most
important club this week. If you're driving it long and straight,
you know, someone like Nelly you know again am I
has got some rounds. She drove it really well at
Aaron Hill's. That's gonna set you up. But then if
you start missing the fair where you cannot control the rough,
and then around the greens really really grainy, and then
(16:25):
just with the winds. So there's more to it than
people think. And look at my look at my hat hair,
oh god, and all self cut because you I mean,
this is a hot podcast, and I'm pro am like,
I don't know. You look at golfers, you know, when
they finished the round in the PGA Tour, right and
they take off their hat and then they just do
that perfect No, but some of them have perfect hair.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
You know who's who's got perfect hair when he does
that is Victor Hovlin.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
He does, he has great hair when he takes who else?
John Rahm has pretty good hair. Yeah, he always gives
it a little rustle.
Speaker 1 (17:01):
But then but the thing about that whole thing is
they run their hand through their sweaty hair and then
they shake hands with everybody.
Speaker 3 (17:07):
It's disgusting. That is a bit gross. That is a
bit gross.
Speaker 5 (17:11):
How do you feel male about the kind of sweaty
hugs and the LPG that we do?
Speaker 4 (17:14):
You know, No, I'm a handshaker, you know that. I
always put my hand.
Speaker 3 (17:17):
Out like that.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
You guys do a little you know, the butt out hug.
Speaker 3 (17:21):
Yeah, I don't think the LPG. Yeah, it's like a
little tap tap tap tap. I call it the tap tap.
Speaker 5 (17:25):
I made a mistake. One's first time playing with Laura
Davis the day, will you know, I was so excited
finished it because usually hug everyone and tried to hug
and that was you only do that once?
Speaker 3 (17:34):
Yeah, hug mate, Laura does not like hugs.
Speaker 2 (17:39):
How's life been since winning the US Open?
Speaker 5 (17:41):
Great? Great? I can't I stop smiling. Oh yeah, it's cool.
And Maya has been brilliant, you know as well. I
probably have to shut up and stop talking about it
and get on still try and do well in the
KPMG this week. But it's like, why not.
Speaker 4 (17:54):
It's so funny because we were talking about her today.
I'm sure we're going to talk about her all week,
and she basically said in a press comments stay like yeah,
do you be honest, like it has I probably hasn't
sunk in yet, but like, hey, it's a new week,
Like I'm ready to go, Like I'm not going to
treat myself like I don't need anything, like it was
a cool achievement, but like I'm.
Speaker 3 (18:12):
Ready to go this week. I feel like you're the opposite, Jeff.
Speaker 4 (18:15):
I feel like you're like, oh my god, I can't
really I just want the US Women's Open as you should.
I'm not saying like you're reacting in a more natural way.
But she's like, now, like back to business, here we.
Speaker 1 (18:25):
Go still like trick herself into getting back to business
because she still has to play, and she also now
that she's a major champion, she wants to play like
a major champion.
Speaker 3 (18:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (18:32):
Sure, she's been great, you know, and I'm sure it
was in Cloud nine and still kind of his but
you know, move on and I'm achieved more. At the
same time, it's a balance, isn't it, Because you don't
want to get too high. But then at the same thing,
you've got to celebrate these things. You know, Maya did
absolutely celebrate. I probably celebrated enough for both of us, but.
Speaker 3 (18:50):
I got Yeah.
Speaker 5 (18:51):
But never have you heard a golfer or have I
heard a golfer say, oh, I wish I didn't enjoy
it as much. You know, when you get moments like that,
you know quite often it's I wish I enjoyed it more.
So you've got to find out about that. Maybe one golfer,
and that would be male read Re mel read New.
Speaker 3 (19:09):
Probably you.
Speaker 5 (19:12):
Know that maybe enjoyed themselves too much after a week.
But then you know how hard it is, and it's
like as caddies would get these moments and it's like
they're soon far between and I like to think I
work hard, but now it's there's expected. I just want
to keep going and it's really makes me hungry as
well and motivated. But I had a week off last
week and I went to Oakmont and just tried to
watch the guys US Open. But I mean, talk about busy.
(19:35):
You couldn't see ship. Yeah, five rose deep, I'm like
Candy Caddy for the US and couldn't get through. I
was a kid up nothing but then yeah, yeah, I
tell you the best thing about caddying, right, I was
saying to Maya today, a couple of nice shots in
the program. It's like you get a front row seat
to watch good golf.
Speaker 3 (19:56):
Mm hmm.
Speaker 5 (19:59):
Yeah. Yes. So being like five Deep outside of the ropes
trying to watch the future group but Opemond and I
was just even though I was outside the ropes not playing,
I thought this place looks hard. I was exhausted just
watching it.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
What days were you there?
Speaker 5 (20:11):
Thursday, Friday?
Speaker 2 (20:13):
Okay? And who did you try to follow?
Speaker 5 (20:16):
I tried to follow Rory Ludwig, but forget it, busy,
best feature groups, no chance. And then I ended up
waiting so Laura in the Sky studio. She got in
and just she's great at the Commons. So watched her
do her thing and it was in the caddy tent
and a couple of yes. So, and I watched Nicholas Norgard.
Speaker 3 (20:32):
Because all he was carrying for him right.
Speaker 5 (20:34):
Yeah. It couldn't have played easy in the sense that
there was no wind and it was soft and it
still looked yeah.
Speaker 3 (20:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (20:40):
So hopefully I'll be there when the lpg's there in
what twenty seven. Yeah, it's so fun yeeah, exciting part
of the lure. I mean, apart from the LPG of
being a great tour like a big family, the venues
and the destinations that we go to for the majors
are just like they're so big.
Speaker 2 (20:55):
Getting better and better.
Speaker 5 (20:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (20:56):
I feel like in the last like five, six, seven,
maybe ten years, like we're now going to the iconic venues.
And obviously the men have been around a lot longer
than us, like playing professional golf, and so to go
to their venues and see and say like how Tiger
played it, or you know like oh that was where
Ben Hogan did this, Like you know, we still know
the history of stuff, and so I think that that's
why it's so cool that we're starting to go to
(21:17):
these unbelievable historic, iconic venues now, is that we can
get those memories as well, and hopefully in twenty years,
you know, you look back and go remember in my start,
like hold that part on so and so and so
and so.
Speaker 3 (21:29):
It's going to be iconic, Jeff making history.
Speaker 5 (21:31):
You know that US that the Women's US Open trophy,
gorgeous thing. And then you look at like and then
you know, Maya's got in our place now in Nashville,
and it's like just look at the names on there,
and then it's stray cool to think that her name
is there forever. It's just you know, a bit emotional
like sort of the week after I was like just
talking to my and just thanking her like just for
being so awesome, and then said are you crying on
(21:52):
the phone Jeff to me? And are we bet? But
don't tell anyone. But she's such a pro man and
just handles it like, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
You've got a trophy too, right, you got the plate?
Where where did you put it? Where's that thing going?
Speaker 5 (22:03):
That was that? The U s g unbelievable. They took
that a lovely like silver plate in a sixy USGA
box with my bib and the cheese hat that I
stole from Mike one. They put that in a box
and it was shipped to my home in Scotland within
three days.
Speaker 3 (22:19):
Wow, that's really good. That's really good.
Speaker 5 (22:22):
They're unbelievable. And then a load of merchant. I'll just
be wearing the hell stuff for the rest of my life.
Speaker 2 (22:27):
Right, and an extra extra lifer.
Speaker 5 (22:34):
That really I've got my flag in MAUII suitcase over there,
and that's because that's the caddy trophy. That's like, yeah,
you know, it's nice that they look one of the
caddies in that way because nobody, no other tournament does that.
But caddies want the flags.
Speaker 1 (22:47):
That's our trophy, and you're going to travel with that
that people can be like, oh, do you want to
see the flag I have?
Speaker 5 (22:53):
I'm not that sad.
Speaker 3 (22:55):
Take it to Pride Jet.
Speaker 2 (22:56):
It's a good conversation starter.
Speaker 5 (23:01):
They're not They're like, what's that now? And they're not interested. No.
Speaker 1 (23:04):
I feel like people are so intrigued by people that
work in golf or have such a unique.
Speaker 4 (23:09):
Yeah perspective into it as well. Yeah, like involved in it.
Speaker 1 (23:12):
Yeah, I live in San Francisco and I'll never forget.
I went to a dinner party with my husband and
the person that was seated next to me said, so,
what startup do you work for? And I was like, oh, actually,
I work in broadcaster. I'm a sports broadcaster in golf.
And they're like, oh, fascinating, Like the whole night. They
just want to talk to you about what you do
(23:32):
and where you're traveling and how did you get into that,
And that's so crazy. You know, people for the most
part live these pretty normal nine to five blah blah blah,
so when they hear about something that you do like that, Jeff,
it's so unique and interesting.
Speaker 5 (23:44):
People don't understand job if you're not in the golf world.
They have no idea the amount of careers and off
shots within golf and you know, a caddy and they
don't get what we do.
Speaker 3 (23:53):
And like we spoke about this, Jeff.
Speaker 4 (23:55):
We've had many many conversations, but we would talk about
like how you're ready to meet someone, how are you
ready to settle down?
Speaker 3 (24:00):
But it's so difficult, you know.
Speaker 4 (24:02):
I'm fortunate Care is fortunate that we've got unbelievable partners
who get it and It's really hard to meet someone though,
Isn't it Like you're constantly away, like you're having to
go by what Mayo or whoever you're working for. If
they want to sort of a sudden play a tournament,
you have to go to that tournament. And it's just
it's difficult to meet someone, isn't it.
Speaker 5 (24:19):
They Yeah, it's such an unrelatable lifestyle, isn't it. So
I think it takes a really special person to be understanding,
because yeah, it's it's very fleeting, But I mean you
do get to meet amazing people. I mean it's like
wherever I go, I'm always a new guy. Right, But
then you do you know, the tournaments and the programs
and stuff. You just meet all these incredible people that
I wouldn't get to meet if I had a normal job. Right,
(24:42):
So it's hard to maybe meet someone in that way.
But you know, I wouldn't swop this for the world,
because you do get to make all these incredible connections.
Do I have time to tell you that the weirdest
thing that happened to me just for Aaron Hills.
Speaker 2 (24:54):
We have so much time.
Speaker 5 (24:56):
Member Aaron Hills Mayo in the US. I was carrying
for there. That's right. Yeah, yeah, there'll be spoken about it. Yeah.
So this I don't know if you think this is
a story, but so nuts. So I've got a lot
of friends in Wisconsin, one of my favorite places, you know,
from the Green Bay days. So we go to Aaron
Hills and I've got like, yes, I go and visit
them early. I want to say about the course. I
(25:17):
go on like the Friday before the tournament land there
and they say, hey, we'll go to a bar. It's
karaoke night.
Speaker 3 (25:23):
Oh that's right up your street, mte.
Speaker 5 (25:25):
Oh yes, so carriaoke night. I've just flown all day.
So a wee bit jet lag tired, slash, two drinks
and kind of tipsy, and we go twenty minutes to
Pleasant Valley Pub and it was just like a bike
shed in the middle of nowhere. So that's that's where
the karaoke is. And yeah, I mean it looked like
the scene from like a Netflix murder documentary, just in
the middle of nowhere. But sure enough we go into
(25:46):
this bike shed and it's just about forty people. Grannies
and granddad's all giving it big licks in the carryover.
Oh I thought, right, Okay, here we go. Let's go.
I go to the bar, get the people as with drinks,
five drinks, eighteen dollars.
Speaker 3 (26:00):
Perfect, Wow, perfect.
Speaker 5 (26:02):
Anyway, an hour later, I'm dueting with an eighty two
year old called Barbara. Okay for doing islands and dream together.
Speaker 3 (26:09):
What is this?
Speaker 5 (26:10):
All islands in the stream.
Speaker 3 (26:11):
It just gives a bit of a rendition, Jeff, So
it is, but it.
Speaker 5 (26:14):
Was more no. And then before that Barbara, she was
doing that foreigner I want to know what love is,
but she had that shrill I want to know what
loally is.
Speaker 3 (26:24):
Eighty two.
Speaker 5 (26:24):
I thought I need to sing with Barbara anyway, sing
with her. I think we did quite well. But then
Barbara's flirting with me on the microphone. And then she's like,
you know, I'm part stylish myself. It's like they all
say that, you know, they've never you know, all that.
I'm half anyway, so I'm not all great Barbara, And
she went yeah, and you know, forty years ago I
used to be ginger, I says great, Barbera, and she
(26:45):
went yeah, and not just upstairs. I said, that's plenty, Barbara,
that's please, please, that's enough. Oh my god. Anyway, So
this is all going on. And then I'm doing my
songs and I'm just like around the room aggressively singing
meat loafing this old man's face. Oh, I do a
couple of meatlove numbers. Anyway, this there's this old man
(27:05):
in the corner and he's got a cowboy hat on
that I really wanted to borrow, but apparently it's the
thing you don't take out another presence.
Speaker 2 (27:11):
It's the thing.
Speaker 3 (27:12):
I made that mistake big time at a wedding once.
Speaker 5 (27:14):
But you see it and it looks magnificent. You go,
can I have that? Yeah? I don't know what the
where that comes from, but it's a yeah. It's a
huge not over here, isn't it. Anyway, he forgave me.
I'm singing the songs and then he's about to leave
and he calls me over this man, he said, that
was really fun tonight, enjoyed a spend of time. If
you just want to give you something while you're here
in Wisconsin, I said, all right, thanks. He says it
(27:37):
will bring you good luck while you're here. So he said,
why are you here? Said here for golf tournament? He
said all right, and he gave me a plastic case
and it was a week gold coin, and he said,
put this in your pocket, and I promise you it'll
bring you good luck while you're here in the spoil.
I swear, and I don't believe in all that he said, honestly,
put it in your pocket. And I had it in
my pocket the whole week. And obviously it had nothing
(27:57):
to do with my o winning the US Open. But
I swear if you look, if you well, no, but
if you look at her past the camera, she's holding
those four footers on Sunday, you'll just see me with
my hand in my pocket or Robin my wee gold coin.
You know, it's just like the sort of trying.
Speaker 3 (28:11):
To see that's a good story.
Speaker 5 (28:14):
That's I'm not superstitious at all, but this old man
gave me and I'm like, I've literally had it in
my pocket ever since. So anyway, I go to Oakmond
and I tell all of this story and then he's like,
give me that gold coin before.
Speaker 1 (28:28):
I can't believe you gave it to him to borrow,
and I can't believe he gave it back.
Speaker 3 (28:32):
No, I can't believe. Always get it back.
Speaker 5 (28:34):
First day they shot sex over and him a piece
of ship mate keeping us helf. Yeah, Wisconsin people are great,
So anyway, whether it's lucky or not, I'm just going
to keep it very nice.
Speaker 2 (28:43):
Jeff, take us through the week.
Speaker 1 (28:44):
How much were you thinking, Okay, this could actually happen
early week or not. What was the confidence Like on
a Thursday.
Speaker 5 (28:53):
I love the course, like from from Monday, so that's
always good, and it suited her eye, and she was
playing well right from just basically and then in the
middle of Tuesday, she's locked in, hitting just unbelievable iron shots,
and then you know we kind of planned out what
we were hoping to do and then yeah, I think
she was four under through nine so posted under part
(29:15):
of the first day and just was solid the whole way.
So it just felt natural. And then you know, she
was leading on Saturday and was just like, didn't have
to chase on Sunday, did all the right things and
was just so clutch and honestly so impressive, like to
you know, winning an event like that your first major,
Like she was just also natural to her.
Speaker 3 (29:36):
Did you ever have to like chat to her, did
you have to chat to her and be like calmi
down at any point, I don't stop talking doing that true.
Speaker 1 (29:42):
Well, she said all that you were telling her all
these stories the whole time, and I want to know
what stories they were.
Speaker 5 (29:48):
People have asked me that I can't remember. But you know,
my is she's we get into the shots and there's
a lot to think about over the shots, but then
you know between shots, and there's a long time to
wait just to strap them get their mind off of golf.
So it's nothing funny. My jokes are crappy. Anyway, I
didn't have jokes, but I've just got long winded waffle drivel.
I think I think I was talking about what favorite
(30:10):
biscuit is or something like that, biscuits, and then yeah,
maybe telling her about the karaoke bar and stuff. She
needs a laugh. You know, we just we have a
lot of fun. She is a great company. But yeah,
you know what it's like mail, just get your mind
off what you're trying to do.
Speaker 2 (30:22):
Did you ever carry for mel Fuck?
Speaker 3 (30:24):
No, absolutely, no, Jeff asked.
Speaker 4 (30:29):
He says, oh, if you ever need a carry, actually
that's exactly.
Speaker 3 (30:34):
And Kira, let me tell you this, let me tell
you the story.
Speaker 4 (30:40):
So this is last year, okay, and my caddy, Greg
couldn't carry for me, so I was intentially getting into
the match play.
Speaker 3 (30:47):
I was like second reserve.
Speaker 4 (30:49):
My caddy was like, hey, I have to go home
for like a wedding or something.
Speaker 3 (30:52):
So I text Jeff. This is how fucking faky Jeff is.
Speaker 5 (30:55):
Right.
Speaker 4 (30:55):
So I text Jeff and I said, hey, may, I
can't believe in me and texting you this like I
really am scraping the barrel here, but like I just
I don't care, like he just carry for me.
Speaker 3 (31:05):
And he's like, oh, oh god, it was such a pleasure.
I've always watched like this. So I was like, okay, weirdo,
like whatever.
Speaker 2 (31:14):
Sound like an eighty year old with.
Speaker 3 (31:15):
What he is.
Speaker 4 (31:16):
So I was like, okay, perfect. I said, I'm second reserve.
But the chance that I'm going to get in, he's like,
oh yeah, okay fine. So the whole week he's like,
I'm so sorry going to be I think you're going
to get in the fucking Like Thursday, he's like, oh,
I'm going to go home and I was like what,
and he's like, oh, I think I just got out.
I'm so tired, you know, I've done like two weeks
and I'm just exhausted. That's why I can't get toilet
(31:37):
paper this week because I just I'm just absolutely just drained,
so I can't carry for you. And I was like thanks, dickhead.
And I actually got in the tournament.
Speaker 3 (31:45):
So I had to pull out because I couldn't be
asked with all the drama.
Speaker 5 (31:47):
But you know why, I had a date.
Speaker 3 (31:52):
So that'specially what happened.
Speaker 5 (31:54):
Anent anything less on this coming on here. You deserve
that that could have been male maybe one day Male
maybe how about you know, how about no, how about
in two years time when you're playing the US Women's
Senior Open. Okay, how about how about I carry for you? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (32:18):
Yeah, you do like the grannies, mate, so yeah, you
can come with with for me anytime when I'm on.
Speaker 5 (32:21):
The s.
Speaker 2 (32:23):
Would you play and not in two years but in
senior events?
Speaker 3 (32:26):
One day?
Speaker 5 (32:26):
Three years, three three?
Speaker 3 (32:28):
Three's you know that we're the same age?
Speaker 5 (32:31):
No way, yes we are.
Speaker 4 (32:34):
Yeah, No, I don't know. I'll see, I might play this.
I might have a couple of.
Speaker 5 (32:39):
Mail is still you know what male is doing? Great,
what she's doing now, Male, And we're so proud of you,
but you are you're such a talented golfriend, and it
would be a must.
Speaker 4 (32:50):
Be playing for your bar tabs every Friday night. I
used to miss every cup.
Speaker 3 (32:53):
That's what it is.
Speaker 5 (32:53):
Well, maybe I could, Maybe I can buy you a drink, now.
Speaker 3 (32:55):
That would be nice.
Speaker 2 (32:56):
He's a big he's a major champion.
Speaker 5 (32:57):
Well, it would be.
Speaker 3 (32:58):
Nice to be he's proper Scottish.
Speaker 4 (33:00):
Honestly, he's got t rex arms that he barely gets
his hand in his pocket.
Speaker 5 (33:05):
I bought five drinks at the Netflix Marbler bar eight dollars.
Speaker 2 (33:09):
Eighteen dollars. A big spender.
Speaker 3 (33:10):
Yeah, well got it.
Speaker 2 (33:13):
You've got a gold coin.
Speaker 3 (33:14):
Any us open out of that? Yeah, cheapest rand of
your life, Jeff, surprise.
Speaker 5 (33:18):
But that Aaron Hills is a good course, though, isn't it.
It's a good golf course.
Speaker 3 (33:21):
Yeah it is. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (33:23):
Did you hear about mel wiping out and falling down?
Speaker 3 (33:26):
Oh about that?
Speaker 5 (33:30):
It was awful? That was was it sore?
Speaker 3 (33:33):
No?
Speaker 4 (33:33):
No, no, no, I'm an athlete. Jeff doesn't bother me. No, no,
you do.
Speaker 5 (33:41):
I just teel them up for your mail and you
just send them down the little easy.
Speaker 3 (33:45):
Oh no.
Speaker 4 (33:54):
Honestly, Kira, Kira, you need to come out with me.
Jeff and Ollie.
Speaker 3 (33:57):
It is brutal.
Speaker 4 (33:58):
By the end of the night, egoes down. Everything's hurting
because you've been slapped around so much.
Speaker 3 (34:04):
But I'll tell you something.
Speaker 4 (34:05):
You do have apps because we absolutely there's just not
a second where we're not laughing.
Speaker 3 (34:09):
It is just brutal. It is brutal.
Speaker 1 (34:11):
You know, Americans could never have this much fun. I
know they get too offended. No bleak out there. So
what's what's next for you?
Speaker 2 (34:28):
Jeff here?
Speaker 1 (34:28):
I know you're at KPMG. What does life look like
for the next couple of months.
Speaker 5 (34:33):
I'll go home. I haven't been home in a while
and from a small town in Scotland, and like, yeah,
I never was happy to watch my win, so I'll
probably ever week, barbecue in the garden, get my mates
around and celebrate and then play some golf. It's actually
a busy time, but it's a European swing, which is
like I love that. So yeah, so I can stay
at home for the Scottish Open Royal Port Call. Got
(34:55):
some good friends there in Wales and then Evy and
is a great time. But they don't do the caddy
football child.
Speaker 4 (35:01):
Anything, So do you know they used to do that
hera where so every years ago they used to do
a caddy football event. So they used to have so
Xinni Dane Zadan, who's obviously a very famous French football player,
and like they basically used to have At one point
they had like seven of the ninety eight World Cup
winning team playing and it was a charity event, so
it was them and their mates against the players and caddies,
(35:22):
but it was only really me and Laura they played. Yeah, yeah,
So remember obviously one of my old caddies, bless his heart,
Big Lee, and he was a manager and anyway, I'm leading.
It was always on a Thursday night, I was leading
Evan show.
Speaker 5 (35:35):
Sixty in the middle of.
Speaker 4 (35:37):
I don't know, I don't know, but it was only
me and Laura of the play. So we're the idiots
that were the only players that played. And obviously me
and Laura can't take anything sport related is unseerious. So
Lee was the manager and he's like, look, really you
lead in the event, Like, look, I'll let you play
twenty minutes, but that's it. You're not playing the full hour.
And I went, if you fucking take me off, don't
even think about coming to it tomorrow, and he's like,
(35:59):
I'm fucking shure eight. The next days are dead and
I shot heavy kick.
Speaker 5 (36:07):
It is on the side of a hill.
Speaker 3 (36:10):
It's the most brutal walk of all the year. Is
heavy And I was like.
Speaker 2 (36:14):
You take off and did you at least win the game?
Speaker 3 (36:17):
No, we never win the game. It's brutal. It's just
carnage by.
Speaker 5 (36:20):
You're playing with like the great soccer, great football soccer players.
Speaker 3 (36:24):
Yeah, it's incredible and there.
Speaker 5 (36:27):
Yeah they're taking it easy. But like I not make
louise at our ones. It's not euphemism, but like I
did it genuinely put it through his legs and ran
and ran past the house. Its giddy, But like.
Speaker 3 (36:37):
I think running is a bit of a stretch. I've
seen you run, Jeff. It's that's a bit of a stretch, mate.
Speaker 5 (36:41):
Yeah. It's more of a heavy pant, isn't it.
Speaker 3 (36:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (36:43):
We can definitely we know when Jeff's around because we
can one we can hear him screaming and he's not
even anywhere in the ball and he's like, oh, we
could just hear him breathing so heavily because he's running
towards the ball that has already been passed to the
other side of the field.
Speaker 1 (36:55):
We do this thing where we ask people what they're
shush of the week is.
Speaker 2 (37:00):
So it's basically something that you think is annoying or
you would want to change.
Speaker 1 (37:04):
It can be serious or non serious, something that irks you,
gets a be in your bonnet?
Speaker 2 (37:10):
Do you have a shush of the week?
Speaker 5 (37:12):
Mal read? General? All things mal read?
Speaker 3 (37:19):
Do you know what it was going to be? You?
So that's the true friendship that we have.
Speaker 4 (37:25):
Absolutely, Oh, oh my god.
Speaker 3 (37:28):
Honestly, Jeff, you've been an absolute treat.
Speaker 5 (37:30):
We have a last oil, we have a laugh, we do,
we do.
Speaker 1 (37:34):
We're so happy for you, Jeff. I hope that you
spend so much time celebrating. You deserve it. You're amazing
and I love all the pictures and videos. If you
just it's clear how much it meant to you and
how much joy you had in that moment getting to
be a part of that. So you it's so well deserved,
and I'm sure Maya feels the same way.
Speaker 3 (37:53):
Yeah, I agree.
Speaker 4 (37:54):
Make really proud of you, mate, and Kai gives his
love to his auntie.
Speaker 5 (37:57):
Jeff, dude, I'll see them soon and see you guys soon.
Thank you, Yeah course, thanks mate, Love you matep.
