Speaker 1 (00:33):
Hello, Hello, Hello, Yeah, you go took the words right
out of my mouth. Back at it again. Hello, holidays
done fantastic. Yeah, a good time. How about yours? Good busy?
But I'm very it's almost you're running around so much
during the holidays sometimes you feel like COMMUNI vacation after
(00:54):
the holidays. I completely agree. All for good reasons, All
for good reasons. I don't know how it's possible that
there is pet hair on my microphone, rajah, that makes sense.
Something really cool. I was at a convention last weekend
for um it was a supernatural convention, but for you know,
(01:14):
the Walker Connected verse, and so many people were coming
up to me and talk to me about this podcast
and how much they love it, and and people who
hadn't seen Shadow Hunters were like, oh, hey, cool, I'm
gonna go listen to the podcast and watch the show.
And people were talking amongst themselves about it instead of
asking me questions about it. And it's so cool because
this is really taken on a life of its own now,
(01:35):
and so kudos to you and are incredible producers and
team for for making this such a great one. That's great,
that's great to hear him. We're Looking into Today, Episode eight,
Season two, Love Is a Devil. Air date was February seventeen,
written by White Sharene Razak, directed by Katriona mackenzie, starring
Kathery mcmare, Dominic Showed, Albert Zende, Matthew m R. B
(01:56):
Isaiam and Staffa and Harry Sham Jr. Guest starring Adam
Vans Brangerlee, Wayne Right, Ariana Williams, David Castro, Nicola Corrales, Mandolin.
That's not her name, she knows that. Jack Holton, Stephanie Belding,
Erica Deutschman, Sure don't there you go? And Raymond and
Black very good. What's going to remember this episode? So
I sort of remember this episode. I reread the log
(02:19):
line and then I was like, tensions run high. Max's
ruin ceremony brings everyone's fears to the forefront. Task With
arranging his brother Max's ruin ceremony, Alec decided this would
be the perfect opportunity for his family to get to
know Madness. But with tensions flying among the different shadow hunters,
Max's big event quickly becomes an evening where they all
(02:40):
must face their biggest fears. Meanwhile, Simon makes a bold
move as Isabelle finds an unlikely new ally who this episode, Yeah,
this episode, This is one of those episodes which we'll
talk about later where they're all they're they're fun episodes,
but simultaneously they're always chaos because you have so many
cast members in everyone and uh, this one was in
(03:01):
a particularly small space, but I made it bigger for
season two. Honestly, Like, imagine filming it in season one,
Magnus's apartment would have been a nightmare, Like at least
this one happened more than one room. Yeah, but I
will say some of my favorite memories and some of
our silliest moments come from this episode as well. So
not without fun, not without fun. Yeah, but we start
(03:25):
on a slightly darker note in the alleyway with Emerald.
Emerald Isabelle trying to get her latest fix because she's
still addicted to the infin for a while. I've said
this before and I'll say it again. This is hands
down my favorite performance of Emeralds. Like, she does such
a good job in all of this. Yeah, this whole
(03:46):
like section and she's great, you know throughout, but this
whole section here is is fantastic, absolutely well and There's
a lot that goes on. There's so much drama happening
with the in Fin and then the Magnus and a
relationship is starting to move forward. But also the Clary
j Simon love triangle takes an interesting turn in this
(04:07):
episode as well. So we um, there's much to be discussed,
much to be discussed, and lots of cats, many many
fucking cats. Man. Honestly, like Roger, I think was this
pretty getting Raja or post getting Rajer? I can't remember.
I'm remember this little sucking ginger cat that just wouldn't
(04:28):
bathe and I had like treats stuff in the no
not you know, an actual cat like feline. U. They
just wouldn't bete and I had like treats stuffed in
the cushions and it wouldn't do as it's told. And
they were like, let's bring out a different cat. And
I'm like, I don't think that's gonna It was a nightmare. Honestly,
it was a nightmare. Um yeah, but very cute all
the same. Absolutely. Oh that's who Eloise is. So this
(04:50):
episode starts with Isabelle in Vampire Alley as it were,
I don't know where it is. It's an alley behind
the door or somewhere some defarious place where she trying
to find you in fen and who comes to rescue
her and sweep her off her feet, but the ever
suave David Castro, Yeah, no kidding, but then does bite her. Yeah.
(05:12):
But Ralphael became one of my favorite characters, and so
much of it had to do with the heart that
David put behind it. But you know, he's a character
that could have so easily been painted one dimensionally, and
yet between what the writers did and the way that
David took so much care with it, he brought it
to life in a way that made this really sort
of darkly conflicted person who who just wanted to do
(05:34):
the right thing but was never, if ever given the
opportunity to rarely have ever given the opportunity to do so.
And it's such an interesting thing in our world. Have
a vampire who's started as a villain, who's trying to
be a hero but doesn't have a chance to. Yeah,
I agree. I agree Again, David's performances throughout this they
do such a fantastic job in bringing us into it.
(05:56):
Like you said, a character that could be very easily
disliked um, this next scene is fun. You remember Isaiah
was trying to take the doors off the hinges. Oh yeah,
wait did you Oh they cut just before because I
remember also for those who don't know, in the books,
Jas is scared of ducks. They got around it, and
they cut around it. There's there's a bunch of cooked
(06:18):
ducks hanging in the Jade Wolf and you so subtly
but pointedly jumped every time you saw them. I wonder
if I wonder if the editors were sitting there in
the booth going what is Tom doing? Did he like
like you didn't get the reference? Maybe I don't know.
I still have that jacket though, interestingly, you know, I
remember being upset that they cut it out because it
(06:39):
was I have that jacket. It was a nice little
like not buddy, I know, but I'm working. Oh we
got a new chair here, which is very exciting. It's
a very comfortable recliner. But Dan has very much claimed
it as his own. And this is the first time
we're doing the podcast since having had this chair, and
(07:00):
he's he's feeling a tad neady. I might have to
do this sideways because he's special guest Dan Hi bub
So Valentine has clear this, yes, and we're not by
her own doing because she was a freaking circle member
(07:21):
who knew right right, I mean everyone for hundreds of years,
well except for us, because the adults don't tell us
anything because that would be too simple. M hm oh.
And this is right after we've seen it thur real
and he showed us the vision of the future with
the sword and everything correct and burnt face man and
(07:44):
burned face. I don't we see a demon, but I
don't think it's burnt lasagn you guy. Yet it doesn't.
It's not so many cruel nicknames for that guy, considering
how long they had to stay in here and makeup for.
But that's a conversation for a later episode. Mm hmm.
And then cut to Alec, who is actually doing his
job and investigating and saying there's an angel he's trying
(08:09):
to figure it's out, and a little sibling discussion, what
are they actually blad blady, Bladi blad Get to the
good stuff, guys. Honestly, all of this dialogue we want
to throw Max and ruined ceremony because he doesn't have
his runs yet. Jack is so baby, he is God.
Do you remember when he came back and he'd scared
the ship out of me. Actually, like we're in the
(08:30):
makeup trailer and he's heard this voice that was like
deeper than mind, like like who the fund is that?
I turned around. It's like six ft tall Jack, And
I was like, I don't know how we're gonna make
this work because it's been like two weeks. But there
you go, look at him, sure, teeny little thing are
you trying to get by? Is that the issue? He
is nudging me with his head? Such cute not look
(08:52):
how handsome Matters had a boy? That a boy. I
think this is finally two when we all started to
to settle into our character. Looks like you look at
everybody and you know, I mean, obviously they're doing things
with Isabelle right now as well, given her circumstance. But
Matt's hair is finally the way that it always was,
and and Nicola's wardrobe and hair, everything's kind of getting
(09:13):
to be more cohesive and falling into a nice rhythm. Yeah,
it sort of stopped changing from this point out. Uh, yeah,
I think so for the most part. For the most part. Yeah, Well,
then we introduced Luke and needs his hair comes back
and forth all the time. It's nuts. Although we'll say
the number of you can definitely tell this that our
show started shooting because the number of choker necklaces that
(09:37):
Emad and I were throughout the series that just are
not a thing anymore. I didn't know there. If I'm honest,
I thought that was a very early two thousands deal,
like sort of stopped happening in two thousand five. But
did I've never worn one? So who am I to judge?
Fashion is subjective and somewhat circular. No, like stuff that
(09:58):
was in the fifties is now very fashionable. Actually have
a suit from a Hugo Boss event upstairs, It was
like dropped straight out of the fifties. Is awesome. That's amazing. Okay,
So Magnus and Aleck have a conversation where it's it's
so great again. Malick is the healthiest relationship on our show.
Alec has an opportunity and he goes, you know what,
I've got a family event. I'm going to bring my
(10:19):
partner into it, and I'm gonna I'm gonna try and
make him part of the family, even if it's difficult,
but because I know he can pull it off. And
I know he can, you know, do it better than
I can. And it's a it's well, I mean, if
you're going to ask someone to throw a party, I
would not ask Alec. I'm just saying, oh, not Matt,
not true party, Mat can throw a party. Yeah, all right,
(10:43):
Now we've got Valentine talkeet irist little Madzie. Oh yeah,
this park. I don't remember this park. I'm not in
this scene. I don't know if you've noticed, Allen and
I look very similar. But that's not that's not me.
Just so you're for you and that's not me either.
But no, I knew that because I pay attention to it. Yeah,
(11:07):
we come back to this park next episode, if you
if you recall, oh is this one we had to
take the jacket with the with this whole next episode? Yeah,
because I because there's stuff that happens with this this
warlock lady here that comes back to bite me literally
that bitch. Oh fuck, yeah I remember? Um oh now yeah,
(11:30):
I'm all caught up. I'm all caught up. You know,
for a dad, Valentine really uses children as manipulation quite
a lot. Tools Yeah, but then that sort of prefaces
the whole conversation of it is that why he had
kids in the first place, was to which was his intention, right,
(11:53):
was to develop two warriors of either side of a coin.
That's what he wanted. Didn't want children, he wasn't paternal.
He wanted soldiers. Yeah, bonus and then he got you know, bonus,
jase in you Okay this scene, So now we have
um clary and Simon on a beautiful New York vista
that some might recognize having a conversation. This scene is
(12:17):
not the first time we had shot this scene, so
Alberta and I shot this scene on a green screen
first because we were still experimenting with the sixty degree
green and blue screen and they were figuring out how
they were going to drop in these plates of New York. So,
as we'll come to see, this is kind of a
very important scene for this whole arc of the entire show.
(12:40):
You can tell it's important when when Simon's involved, because
it starts with a sort of fairly self deprecating soliloquy
just to himself. He's always very sha experienced this one,
but we had to completely and we were so happy
with it. They really took the time and let us
play and surprise each other and try a bunch of
things and and we were so happy, and then we
(13:03):
had to completely reshoot it. They described the scene entirely
because there was some issue with the VFX and we
had to completely reshoot it. But it was one of
those things. And I've Albert and I had a lot
of conversations about this after the fact, but because we'd
done it and then had time, there have been things
that have been marinating kind of in both of our heads.
So when we come back to it, there were actually, yeah,
(13:25):
there were more layers to the scene. You can tell
you're outside in this one. You know what it is,
you're the tip of your nose and your cheeks go Rosie.
It's it's a very attractive look, but like it's for me.
I'm aware of the difference between this she's inside, she's outside,
and Alberto's eyes water a little. My ears go, which
is really bad. My ears go right. Thing, So if
(13:46):
you like, next time you're watching the show, like if
we if we asked the question again, you know, was
that on a set or not, You'll be able to
tell because my ears like fucking traffic light. Yeah, well,
this was still on a screen. But it was much later,
so it was it was still inside a bit colder. Yeah,
it was still inside because we happually do it on
blue instead of green for like the greener or something.
(14:07):
And that Hastings actually directed this on FaceTime. Well he
while his wife was having a baby, right, I remember
that whole day. I wonder. It's so interesting. So for
those who don't know, normally the process is green. It's
a very sort of bright green. It's a bit like
the background of your text bubble on your iPhone. It's
(14:30):
that sort of color green, that sort of green screen
looks like. And it's because it's one of the least
used colors in TV. It's very rare that you'll match
those colors because if you have that color, let's say,
in your costume or whatever, then that will also be
edited out by the camera, so it will look like
just empty space when it's on the screen, and in
the blue screen is the opposite. If you do have
those colors in, then the blue is also not used
(14:52):
as often they put the blue screen in. It actually
used to be blue screen predominantly back in the day,
like ten fifteen years ago. It was almost exclusively blue green,
and then you know, people started wearing bluemore. I guess Saturday.
But it's interesting that you have to come back and
do it on a blue screen. I wonder why, because
you're not wearing green, but he is wearing blue. Yeah.
I think it had something to do with bushes that
(15:14):
they had put some bushes and they were they couldn't
they were, they were flaring on the thing. There you go,
There you go, little mind, nute VFX lesson for you.
That's basically all I know about it is just that.
But once again, it's one of those scenes that this
is the beauty of getting to do a show for
so many years is these characters live a life of
(15:36):
their own and they have so many experiences that the
relationships evolved so much, and you evolve in your working
relationship with people that you get to work with over
and over again. So when you and and of course
you know when you you're opposite Alberto, it's just absolutely
and it's so satisfying. It's like the scene at Lake
Lynn or you know, when you watch Harry and Matt
(15:56):
doo a scene you can tell that there's that kind
of history there. Yeah, he developed a report. You know,
there's what are we on now? We're on episode eight
of season two, So we've been doing this for two
years because we took that six month break where we
saw each other pretty much constantly, all of us because
we were doing press for the show. Um So season
one took about six months, and then season two took
(16:16):
eleven months, and season three took eleven months. But between
these two, like where we're at, it was, we would
have been working together foremost a year. Indeed, and ship
did you guys just make out what they see? We've
only been brother and sister for like two episodes or
four or nine episodes or whatever it is, but that's
like four days in shadow on time. Simon, you back
(16:38):
up now, he made a move. It was nice. If
you're standing on a beautiful a beautiful dark and on
Burdo makes a beautiful speech at you. Are you not
going to kiss him? I would kiss him for less
than that. If I'm honest, I would kiss him, like
if he gives me the opportunity, it's going to happen.
That's the real truth that I know. I love that guy. Sorry, Tessa,
(17:00):
you're listening. I apologize, I promise I will restrain. It's true.
That's true. Oh that's right. This is when Nicola, when
Marris was running the institute. Yeah, oh that's right. Wait
where did all the tree go? He's busy with the
infan business. I think code TV code for Nick got
(17:22):
another job and had to go and do that for
a little bit. That's funny. They do enough guest stars
this episode. They you can go do something else. Yet
he undresent books another job and had to go and
do it. This is the thing. So there are two
different versions of roles, or three different versions of roles
within a within a show or a movie. That's um,
(17:44):
a series regular, Cat myself, Alberto, Matt, those guys series
regular sort of your core, your core sort of characters.
And then you have guest stars who come in like Mariss,
who very important to the story and will come in
and then and then you know, do their things. They
always have arcs and linked into the story in some way.
And then what's it called when someone comes in and
(18:05):
just does like an episode occurring? Yeah, well there's recurring recurring.
That's where recurring guest star. Um, I'm gonna go back
just a little bit. The timing is gonna be wrong,
but we're in a conversation with with Alec and Maris
(18:26):
in the head of the institute's office. And I think
someone walks past a light behind the window. Yeah, because
there's a big old shadow that walks through the stained
glass window. And we know that the light isn't coming
from inside the room, it's coming from outside that window.
I think someone goes by it. It's right as she's so,
he says, let's see here. She's about to cry. She's upset.
(18:50):
She says, you're right. He says, oh no. She says,
of course we'll be there. Thank you for going through
all this trouble for us. And then she sits down
and right, it's matt shadow. There's no light coming from
inside the room. There shouldn't be any light coming from
inside the room, not strong enough light. Oh it does
look like it moves with her. Maybe I'm wrong, who knows.
(19:11):
It's possible it's ghosts. I'm amazed that that studio wasn't haunted, honestly,
wasn't it. Though There's some weird ship happened every now
and then. But like, yeah, I mean, do you remember
when wardrobe was in kind of the front of the office,
sort of right when you came in and they were
they were positive there was a ghost. There was a
woman like a woman, right, yeah, yeah, I do remember
(19:34):
exactly as I think. I don't think we were alone there.
(19:58):
I just I love of the way Matt can just
mic drop online before he leaves a scene as well
and over and he just goes, thank Magnus and then leaves.
And a boy, some real prowess there. Oh, here are
the cats. I forgot Jason's living at magnus Is right now. Yeah,
I'm still living at Magnus's. Yeah, this is They cut
(20:20):
it out, no fucking way. This was one of my
favorite they cut so they cut out. And we talked
about this with Harry when we had him on the
show briefly. These little, these little like idiosyncrasies that make
him so genius and make him able to take on
a character as poignant as Magnus. He that little room,
do you remember We're on the rooftop and the rooftops
are set and then that little room, the sort of
(20:42):
stairwell was about four ft wide and we all had
to cram into it, and it looks like it goes downstairs,
but it doesn't go anywhere. It's just it's like a
shed and he leans his head out before the scene goes,
and he goes, hey, is it is it nighttime or daytime?
And they go it's daytime. It's like in the morning.
He goes, okay, great, and he shuts the door, and
then as he opens the door, he just for half
half a second shields his eyes from the light, like
(21:03):
he hasn't seen the light yet. Today. I was like,
a fucking brilliant, like absolutely fucking brilliant. What a clever
thing to do that makes total sense. Um, and they
cut it out of the show. I'm a shame. I
love Harry so much. It seems a wasted opportunity. But yeah,
these are these moments that you get to have with
actors like Alberto and Harry. I mean everyone really, but
Alberto and Harry, in my opinion, have the most examples
(21:26):
of these moments where they really connected with these characters
on such a small level, where it makes such a
huge difference performance wise that I always thought that was
very special. Absolutely, I forgot what happened in this scene.
I remember you guys are talking about the paramedic connection
and how much Jason knows about conversation with the showrunners
(21:49):
and talking about like how much do I feel? Like?
How much of this am I aware of? Like? Do
I know? Is that what I know? No? No, no, no, no,
no no no, I said, I don't know. It was
one of those questions that was never I think it
was sort of don't ask, we won't tell, and don't
worry about it. Don't pull the thread, got it. That's
(22:11):
the funny thing with so many of these supernatural kind
of mythologies. It's you get to a point and you
just go, you know what, there's too many questions, too
many questions, the baseline stuff. Yeah, if he's in pain,
I feel it. Maybe if it's pleasure, I don't feel it.
Let's just stick with that, yeah, because that would be
fucking weird. Also, he runs in on me having sex.
(22:32):
It's like two episodes ago, he runs in on me
having sex. So if that was the case, wouldn't never
be aware? You could at least knock. But would he
care at that point? I don't know. Probably not, Probably not.
If there's If there's, if it's Alec and there's a
job to be done, he's going to plow in. Oh
look how handsome he looks. You both look great. You
like semi matching as well. That's fucking cute. That's cute
(22:54):
as hell. You like color scheme together, cute couple of stuff. This.
So this is one of those scenes where it can
be very as we mentioned earlier, it can be very
fun and very silly making, but also, let's let's say
stressful for the quote unquote grown ups on set, because
you have you know, I think we had fifty or
a hundred essays and probably twenty cast in a very
(23:18):
small space and not a lot of time to do it.
And we spent I think two or three full days
getting all of these little pieces and moments and connective tissues,
and you know, with with the magic that's happening here,
it's all about different perceptions of reality and different warped realities,
and so just keeping track of the little pieces of
whose perspective are we in? Am I in my perspective
(23:41):
or someone else's because that changes how you behave towards
other people in the scenes, even if you're in the
deep background. And it it took a lot of effort
on everyone's part to stay on the same page. And
it was which which when we get to another scene later,
is what led to the delirium. But it was definitely
work was It was tricky honestly, So this is even
(24:05):
this is like pre the chaos really starting to happen. Yeah,
but it is a realized sculpture. They realized sculpture. So
we're on the clock as well. Fucking melting, melting, did
you see it? What a mental thing to put in
the show. Looks fantastic mental idea. How much harder would
(24:28):
it have been? I guess it must have been much
more expensive to make, like a silicon one? Probably? Oh
is that? Do we see some sparks flying between Jason
Maya just for a second bit of reconciliation, little reconciliation,
maybe a few very brief sparks. I don't think that
happens for quite some time, And it only happens for
(24:50):
the briefest of moments. I think it might be sooner
than you think. Really, is that true? I think so? Well?
This is okay, this scene in particular with the three
of us with you mean Alberto. I remember for some
reason we couldn't be my fault. It was my fault. Yeah,
thet it was the first taken. It's in the it's
in the gag reel. If you are the blopers if
(25:11):
you look it up. The first take. I just wasn't
expecting his response, and he's such fucking genius with his
with his comedy. He I came in and I said, hey,
you know, we're all a little piste off about the situation.
Nobody wants to do it, but I'm gonna come and
say hi. And he goes he liked the fonds. He
went like a and I was like, oh no, that's
really fucking funny. And it made me laugh and once
(25:34):
and then you know, as we've talked about a thousand
times now, once one person's gone, it's really difficult to
get It's actually a little easier I think, one on one,
because then you get it together, then you're good. But
with three of you, it's thirty three point three times
infinite percent that someone's going to give you something that
got that sets you off and you're already sort of
(25:55):
on that knife page. But they cut it together, it
looks looks solid, does look like we're laughing, and it's
this is one of those episodes to where I'm just
watching kind of the all the dynamics, everybody's insecurities get
just a little picked up, just get a little peaked.
Everything is just slightly heightened, even relationship. Yeah, Magnus is
(26:16):
insecurities all, like two and a half of them are
because what does he have to be insecure about? That's
not true. He's got a bunch of things to be
and panadas apparently he's just adorably fussing over and panadas
and it's fantastic. Well, this is That's all an insecurity
to do with Alec though, isn't it like he knows
the empanadas are perfect, it's not as cooking, It's true.
(26:38):
Look at Nicola, she is a flippant vision. I was
going to say vision too, like one mine? See that? Okay,
So the question here is like when did when did
the hallucinations start? Like at what point did Iris was
Iris at Iris? What time did what? At what point
did Iris start doing stuff? Because you just saw your
(26:59):
first one, like right after that scene with Marris and
Aleca Magnus. That's weird. I didn't feel right saying Aleca
Magnus in that order didn't feel correct. Magnus analc Magnus
anallek is the correct way to say it, Like yeah,
like would you ever say jelly and peanut butter, No,
I don't feel right. That didn't feel right. That was strange.
(27:21):
I don't know why it came out that way. Um,
there you go. But so these that anyway. That was
the question is like, how how far back of these
hallucinations started happening? Is it as soon as people start
walking in? Is that why people are already starting to
feel insecure in situations where maybe they wouldn't. Um, I
don't know, we don't know. But we just saw Simon
(27:41):
making out with mya. Yeah. Well, and if I remember correctly,
it has to do with the proximity of the cats
in the apartment, and so I think it's isolated to
Magnus's penthouse. M I see, Oh that's right, I remember now,
person McGonagall ship, got it? Mm hmm. But they did kiss? Well,
(28:02):
that was just in your head. No, they were outside
having an intimate conversation. But the warped reality that's clearing
a vision of them kissing, got it. They were just
outside having a drink. From my understanding, Hollywood, tear cat
love that love a solid left hand, left eye to camera,
(28:23):
great fucking great work. Can you pick can you pick
your eye? Nah? It's luck of the drawer. Yeah, totally.
And it's and very often it comes out the wrong
time as well, especially in auditions, where I'm like, all right,
they've said it in the script, this tear needs to
happen at this fucking moment, And then I'm like, no,
I'm already crying. Doesn't make sense, like I'm crying three
(28:45):
minutes before I need to be crying anysoever. It easier
because you can cut in and out of it and
makes sense, but when you're doing an audition it's really
hard sometimes. But have you ever been in that moment
where they're doing like a pickup or you're about to
start the scene and you get just right in the
emotional place and they're like, oh, wait, hang on, we
gotta then we gotta fix it, and you're just like,
(29:06):
it's always flipping the lens. It's always flipping the lens.
I'm like, And then you're sort of looking up like
I'm holding this tear in the chamber like it's right there.
If it comes out, I don't know when we're going
to get this again. So like and someone comes up
and they're like, do you want to think? Do you
want to water? I'm like, no, just hurry them up.
Why are you standing like that? Because I have a
fucking tear in my eye and I don't want to
waste it. Like I was just really upset and now
(29:27):
you're now we're in a different spot. Yeah, Like I'm sorry.
I'm trying to hold this trauma right here, right here,
in a shitty place right now. Yeah, fucking know what
a nightmare? There you go? What do time? What do
we do? Love it? I've known two actresses. Never I've
never known an actor who a male actor's guests. Everyone's
(29:49):
an actor, but it's it makes sense for the story
to say actress because it was two women. I've known
two women who can choose their eye. Wow, they can
pick their eye to tear out of which I thought
was pretty incredible. I think it might be like rolling
your tongue, and I think it might be like an
actual like a skill that some people possess that some
people don't possess, to be able to send tears to
(30:10):
just one tear duct. I am not. I'm not that
dexterous with my tear ducts. Me neither. I don't know.
But leave it to Magnus to be the voice of
reason and go with Clari have youssed, Simon, what's going on?
Have you been drinking? Yes? Yes, unfortunately that's not the
(30:33):
problem here. Yeah, what is Issy doing? Did she leave
the party or she on her way to the party.
You don't look good either way. She looks like she's
been doing drugs. So she looks like, oh dear, oh dear.
So I think it's a great dress. I think she
is asking for more. Yeah, right, yeah, I think she's
on her way. I think she's on her way to
(30:54):
the party. And oh yeah, why did you call me here?
So she calls Raphael on the way. Yeah, which, don't
do it, Raphael, Nah, But he loves her, so he
doesn't matter. If you love someone, you don't give them
the drug that they're struggling with. When you've seen train spotting,
you lock him in a room and they see weird
babies on the roof for two days and then they
(31:15):
feel better all of a sudden, and then it's all better,
and then everything is better. We'll get to the point. Yeah,
that's how that goes, right. She actually does this. He
does try and resist as much as is vampirely possible,
but she does this. There she makes him taste her
blood again. It's Raphael trying to be a hero and
just his addiction took the better of him, got the
(31:38):
better of him. Ah, he's in the box, watching the box.
It's too big. The box is too big for a Stelle,
isn't it. Maybe it is a Stella. I think Jack
is just little. That's what's possible, just a little lad.
Oh that is a little book moment though. We get
(32:00):
to see Magnus's eyes flash. There's surely not the first
time we get to see his cat eyes, is it. No? No, no,
we've seen it several times, but right, yeah, we literally
see it in episode one. It's all coming back to
me now, it's all coming back to me. Was such
a long time ago? Oh, Jason, isn't my brother? Oh
punk from the mouth of Babes at all? Monster? Oh
(32:26):
that's right. This is when you you get your vision
pretty shortly hereafter. Yeah, there was something that happened when
you guys shot this scene. I wasn't there, so I
don't remember. Isn't there something or am I am? I
know there was there like a couple of issues with it,
and I can't remember exactly what they were. Didn't the
door get locked or that's right. The sliding door was
(32:49):
on like a wedge, and when I shut it behind me,
and I did it a couple of times, and poor
Harry got and I must have shut it too hard
because Harry is a big, strong guy. When I slid
the door shut, it wedges itself shut, so he couldn't
enter the scene. Um, so you just sort of heard
him like rattle the door for a second with like
Mom unconscious on the floor, and then you just hear
(33:10):
him go could open the door. I got ship. Sorry, body,
I'll try and close it slow, but the door was
quite heavy, so sort of the inertia of that velocity
took over a little. I don't know, I'm making it
uses a bad job. Well either way, can we just
talk about how badass Nicola was but throwing that battle
ax in the smarting? Yeah, bear the pain and get
(33:31):
the venom out of your system. You are right, Rafael, correct,
We I knocked Mom out. And now Rafael is giving
isabel or what for? No, not not like that, and
some good advice. He yes, exactly, And now Isabelle's finally
entering the chaos of the party, but first she razzis
(33:51):
her track marks. Yeah, smart, smart, lady Smart Lady Penthouse
one year it is here we go? Is he seeing
visions there? Is he immune to these visions because of
the vampire blood? I wonder. I don't know, because I
don't think if anything happens to Izzy, maybe she's immune
because she just a racks heat too. That could be
(34:13):
like right at the door, Clary, I don't have time
for your problems. I don't have time for your problems.
Oh there's another assignment in my vision. Tugging on the
tie Clary's piste. That man is like magnus no no, no, no, no,
no no in my house. Yeah, I love that. One
(34:34):
of my favorite lines. Not this is not an episode
of the Real Housewives of Address. Yeah, very good. No,
No it's not, it is not, and the may is
not even there. It's Raj. It is Raj, Poor Raj again,
poor Raj. He was about to get knocked the funk out. Yeah.
I just want a T shirt that says poor Raj.
(34:55):
So it's you know, that's the next You should send
them to Raymond. Honestly, we think of you fondly, Raymond, fondly,
and often what we do we do. And then now
they've just found knocked out, knocked out Maris as we
get for throwing a battle axe at your son. Yeah,
Claire's having a freak out. I love at Magnus is
(35:17):
the only one who goes. But I'm just trying to
throw a party here, and everybody's hallucinating what's in this punch?
What bartender did I hire Maya? Yeah? Right? And then
now Alex visions We say I didn't have a choice
a lot, and I don't think that's true. I don't
think it's true that I didn't have a choice. Well,
(35:40):
I could have done something else except for knocking her out. Yeah, maybe,
like I disarmed people all the time constantly you do.
But then again, you know Warlock visions. Yeah, it was
making me crazy. Judgment was slightly impaired. Oh shoot, that's right,
(36:18):
I remember what's about to happen. So now we everyone
runs out to the roof because they hear Clary yelling
at Alec, and Alec is standing on the edge of
Magnus's roof about to jump because his hallucinations are of
Clary digging the knife in about, you know, accusing him
of killing her mother, even though the man was possessed.
What was he going to possessed and is semi possessed
(36:41):
right now? My goodness, who's going to save the day?
I guess it was interesting as well, wasn't it? Because
we had to put were you more than anyone? Had
to play two different versions of of Clary in this
the like honestly that I don't think any of them
are dishonest who Clary's character is, like, the fury is
(37:02):
there and also the empathy. It's interesting. You got to
play two sides of the same coin, which is quite
good fun. It was good fun. It was interesting on
the day because we were so rushed and both sides
of that are so emotional. They was constantly having to
flip back and forth between the two, and we didn't
have a lot of time either because well, yes, we
(37:23):
got to run it through. But I think every time
they changed the camera, we'd have to do a couple
takes of one and a couple takes of the other.
Every time they switched camera positions, and so it was
constantly going, all right, give me like thirty seconds to
go from Wow, that's wild. We were in the shed.
We didn't hear any of that. We were in the league, remember,
like shoulder and shoulder like this like sardines. Yeah. Well
(37:44):
that was also the hardest part, because you know, you
all were having so much fun, and all I wanted
to do is have fun with you guys. But I
literally had to put myself in a little corner and
uh ignore all the fun that was happening there. Oh God,
Matt breaks some heart every time. And then of course
Magnus comes right at the perfect moment and saves the day. Also,
kudos to our VFX team. When Magnus opens this safe,
(38:07):
it looks amazing. Everybody's yelling at each other. Everybody's yelling.
I forgot, I got to yell at Nicola. This is
one of the only scenes I've ever happened. A fucking
great Simon lyone. Mya is at the bar, yeah, and
Alex on the ground awesome, love that so much. Suddenly
snaps us out of it. Why does he come? Why
(38:28):
does he start yelling at me? I didn't do anything.
I came and said hello, I was trying to be nice.
Didn't hen yell at me for the right thing. I
knocked out my mom. Oh yeah, because she took down
his wards and so he had to put them back up.
There we go nobody leaves to like it back. Oh man,
magnus legend. Okay, now this this is the part again
(38:49):
poor Rash. He's scanning Raj, just making sure everything's okay.
But this is getting to a scene that I think,
other than the Goat's feet, is probably that's right. Yeah,
this is probably the blooper scene that we talked about
the most barring goat speed because we had but this
is our seventeen eighteen of day two of being in
(39:12):
this room, just us, and we had maybe thirty minutes
to get this entire scene done, and it's one of
those were somehow we'd all been put in a line
and everybody had one thing to say, and it was
basically just going down the line. And it's one of
those you know TV scenes where to get the information
out and make it kind of seem natural, they give
everyone half a sentence, and for whatever reason, the way
(39:34):
Matt was saying his line sent all of us back.
It was because it wasn't him. It wasn't his fault.
He had the last like ellipsus word, so it was
it was like you mean dot dot dot question mark
or like wait, dot dot dot like it was something
like that, and it was just the last one, and
we were running on this has to be like our
(39:57):
twelve of a twelve hour day. We're running on fun
and empty. And every time he did it, we were like,
oh no, and it like one of four of us
would break every time, like it was a different person
each time, but someone would go and it would set
all of us off as a nightmare. I think he
had to leave set. I think they and he had
to leave set because he was like, I can't, I
(40:18):
physically can't. You know, I'm making it worse way doing this.
He made the right call, honestly, and he did the
did it from off camera somewhere. Oh man, it happens.
He had quit saying it. Yeah, happens to the best
of us. That fucking little ginger cat that wouldn't behave
from the beginning, the red haired cat, the French dialect.
It must be Irish rouse. Yeah, sure, this is. This
(40:41):
was weird as well because we all had to hold
this position. Oh I forgot about this. Actually not for
too long, it turns out, although there was a stunt
in it, so we had to hold and reset. I'm
pretty sure, because doesn't she get flung out of the
room I think, so look at these practical effects as well.
When we we talk a lot about the the effects
(41:01):
on our show, which is spectacular, but the practical effects
are also fantastic, and we don't talk about those enough.
Actual ship blowing up, which is books, shells falling apart,
lights exploding like is dangerous no matter what it is,
and they're done very well and very safely. We didn't
(41:22):
do enough warlock battles on the show. I have to say,
is this one? There's one in season three? Yeah, but
it's this combination of practical and visual effects that just
it brings it to life and well and also performingly
and Stephanie just doing their thing. Yes, so much of
it is about this physicality. Oh is this one? Madzie
joins Magnus and Alec shortly thereafter because they have to
(41:45):
rescue her from Valentine. But oh, that's so, this is
where the blood oath comes in. So if you remember,
I made a blood oath with Iris to try and
bring my mother back and before she kidnapped me. But
she calls her blood oath in it, got it, got it,
got it to the clave with you, Iris, babe. Yeah,
(42:07):
this is the scene right here what does Valent turned
up to anyway? It's too dangerous. I'm so curious if
the line ends up in there. Let's see, it's got
to be he's thinking about it. Wait, I have to
be wearing heels at this point as well. I'm wearing
some sort of fancy Italian heel because I don't look
that much shorter than Matt, and I am quite a
bit shorter than Matt. But if you in that shot,
I didn't look that much shorter than him. So I
(42:29):
think I'm wearing some sort of like Cuban boot. I'm sure.
I just keep giggling because I'm watching all of us
trying not to laugh. Yeah, we're all just scowling just
a little bit too much. Oh, this is when we
found out that Clary has pure angel blood. I forgot that.
This is when we put all those pieces together. Always Magnus,
he always knows, He always knows. Now, this scene actually
(42:51):
was outside. This is across the street from that park.
Are you saying that that's what it was? Are you
saying that dot dot dot not? It wasn't. It wasn't
a single word, which I thought it was. Are you
saying that is what it was? And if you notice
rewatch it, it's I think either just Matt or just
(43:12):
you and Matt in the shop. But silliness aside. What
we're really funding out here is that the angels. Clary
has pure angel blood because she was able to see this,
this angel's vision correct at a downroad, apocalypse is coming.
Soul Sword equals down worlders dying, is what we're saying.
If it's activated, correct, it's different from the books. And
(43:36):
what does it do in the books? The thing in
the books, it's it's only the truth telling thing. And yeah,
and I think you know it's it's a powerful sort
that can be used to kill an angel, I think.
But it's also just one of the three mortal instruments.
It's it's just an extremely powerful supernatural sort happen three
more instruments together. Anything Razil is called Oh I knew
(43:59):
that Razil as that happens. Yeah, and the cup makes
new shadow hunters. What is the not the like the mirror?
Do I mean it is a like spoiler? Is? Like
you know, I don't I don't remember exactly what properties
the mirror has. I think it I don't know. Tweeters
if you're listening, We tweet Twitter you can put it
(44:20):
on mine scram some if you want to send a
message something to do with truth and visions and something
I think I can't I can't actually recall. But we're
having The download apocalypse is imminent, basically, is what we're learning.
And of course Clari is going well. Some of the
people I love most in the world are downloaders, including
my dad and my boyfriend now and all of these
(44:41):
people that mean the world to me. Luke, oh yeah, okay,
I was like, I don't think that is no. And
then of course Simon and true Simon fashion just makes
it all better. Now we're at the room ceremony. I
would have been scared of Stephen if I was Mac.
If I was Max's age and he's got the full
(45:02):
mcgiver on his face, I would have been scared of him.
I'm a little as the character. Yeah, not on sex,
he's a big, softy Stephen, but as the character, I
would have been terrified at that guy. Oh my god,
eyes a mouth sun shot. We have to think about
it too, though, especially someone who's grown up in address.
Silent brothers have to be something that are a lot
(45:23):
more common. No, I mean Max the actor Jack, I
mean Jack. Sorry, Jack, I mean Jack would have been
I would have been scared if I was Jack. You
have to remember, though, he was a lot older than
he looks, was he. Yeah, he's a very mature kid.
He was like eleven or twelve, wasn't he. Yeah, no
idea because look at all all dressed up to the nines.
(45:45):
I think it's weird that we had this whole cool
thing party planned and then the ceremony didn't happen there.
I don't know, maybe it's like a rehearsal dinner. Yeah,
like this is the reception versus the ceremony, any kind
of deal, because if you think, if you look, it's
just family at the ceremony and it's a very small,
(46:05):
kind of quiet thing. So then you have a party.
I think this is one of the first times we
get to see our always like proper backstage always. This
was a great scene at Maris Nikola does such a
good job with this scene right at the end. M M.
I remember that. Yeah, she does an amazing job, and
we were This is another one of those like right
at the end of the day, we're all sort of
(46:26):
running on empty twelve hours. We had about fucking thirty
seconds to get each of our coverage, and she just
like knocks it out of the park. She does such
a good job. And it's this is again something that
they they actually took the time in this episode to do,
is give our characters a moment of reconciliation. You know,
you see it with Simon and Clary, you see it
with even, see it with Clarie and Aleck. Here before
(46:48):
you have that lovely scene with Nicola. It's you know,
Clari finally says straight up, I don't blame you for
my mom. It's when it's one of the first times
you get to see a little bit of that that friendship,
the thing we call friendship between Alec and Clary. They
don't quite hug, but they almost do. No, there's a
little little awkward arm grab of like I'm gonna just
(47:11):
know it's like a half pat sohen we're done. And
then this beautiful scene with you and Nicola and Matt.
I can't tell, Isabelle, you know sometimes you can tell
by the color of our faces how long we've been
on set, Like you can tell, like the blood has
started to drain out. We all look a little paler,
(47:32):
Like Matt's quite olive skinned. Anyway. But when he looks
like really pale, and I'm quite pale naturally, when I
look really really pale, and you can tell we've been
on set for a while and with like you're really
tired and the blood's just like in your body trying
to keep your functioning. That's that's what it looks like,
just looking a little pale and interesting. Also, it must
have been getting cold right now, so we're spending less
(47:53):
time outside. I think it was about October, because I
seemed to remember this was around Halloween we shot this
episod it. They do this over and over again with
Maris and it's so it's so beautiful because they have
they have such both sides of the coin with her.
They paint her as this so a strong leader and
this amazing mother and this woman who is so strong
(48:15):
in her convictions, and they give her so many beautiful
moments of vulnerability as well. It just and she does
it just Nikola just hits it out of the park
every time she does something very honest about performances, which
is fantastic. Yeah, and then you know bad guy man.
See every kid in Valentine's Stead gets treats. Every single
(48:37):
kid except Clary whenever he pasta pasta, I got pasta. Yeah,
I mean I got tortured and eventually murdered. But yeah,
pasta is great, lovely, lovely, What a consolation to have
some freaking pasta pasta or bought me ice cream? Is
that true? I don't think that's true. Oh he didn't,
(48:59):
as you said, Jays didn't. I was like Jade, I
don't think there's a scene of it, and that's our episode.
Valentine's doing bad stuff at the end. Surprised kells please
as the French maybe say, I don't know, I don't
speak French. Maybe well, how apt given the French Warlock
(49:20):
spells in the spells um well as always, thank you
everyone for listening, for joining us on this little journey.
I think we covered. I didn't look at my cheat
sheet one time. I don't know what we covered, but
there's a whole bunch of words, like six pages of
work here. Sorry, sorry producers who worked so hard on this.
There's like six pages of really interesting stuff and I
covered zero of it. And I apologize for that. No, no, no,
(49:42):
we covered. I was keeping an eye on it. I'll
keep us on track. It keeps me straight. That's the
thing working on it. Well, folks, thank you so much
for joining us again, and hopefully we made some sort
of sense in an episode that is very good, bluted
and of itself. All right, Bye Bye Bye. Returned to
