Speaker 1 (00:04):
Not one, but three new iPhones. What's going on. I'm
rich Demiro. This is rich on Tech. Apple held it's
yearly iPhone event today in Kooper Tino, and I was there.
The company got right down to business. They didn't really
do much housekeeping or give many updates on various product lines,
except to say that they are about to ship their
two billionth iOS device. And they said that the Apple

(00:25):
Watch is the number one watch in the world. And
they also started this presentation with the Apple Watch. I'll
have more on that in a future podcast, but let's
break down what's new with iPhone. There are three new
models of the iPhone. Let's start with these successors to
the iPhone ten, which are called the iPhone ten S
and the iPhone tens Max. Yep, PEPSI had it first.

(00:48):
Remember that highly caffeinated cola that came in a black can.
Let's go over those two versions of the iPhone ten S.
The first is nearly identical to the iPhone ten in
size and look. It has a five point eight inch screen,
but the iPhone tens Max has a six point five
inch screen, which is the largest ever on an iPhone.
But here's the thing, it's not a bigger phone than

(01:09):
the iPhone eight plus. It's basically the same size, it's
just that this time the screen takes up the entire
front of the face. There are no bezels, no home button,
but yes, there is still that notch. The screens on
both of these high end devices are Apple's very best
o lead displays. They look great. They're very brilliant, very bright.
Now we move inside the phones. They have a similar

(01:29):
camera setup as before, with dual twelve megapixel cameras. Nothing's
been improved really as far as I can tell, on
the front facing camera, which is kind of a bummer
since iPhone takes some of the worst front facing shots
in low light. But what can you do. Cameras now
have a feature called smart HDR, which I really like.
It blends information from a bunch of frames all at once,

(01:50):
so this gives you a really nice shot using information
that the camera gets from all different aspects of what
you take a picture of. It kind of sounds like
what Google has been doing with the pixel, but we're
gonna wait to see how good Apples tech is compared
to Google's. Once we get one of these phones in hand,
the pixel is still in my opinion the king of
smartphone cameras. The pictures that come out of that thing

(02:10):
are just amazing and you literally have to do zero work. Now.
Portrait mode is still represented on these cameras on the
iPhone ten S, but there is a new trick. You
can now adjust the depth of field even after you
take a photo. So there's a little slider in the
edit function and you can slide it up or down
to make the background blurrier or less blurry. And yes,

(02:30):
Samsung has had this feature for several phone models, but
it's new to Apple and it's really cool. After that,
you have a new A twelve bionic chip inside these phones.
The processor can handle more transactions at once. Apple says
it can help open apps thirty percent faster. Plus it
can now support up to five hundred and twelve gigabytes
of on board storage. I'll talk more about that in

(02:51):
a second. Battery life is improved on both of these models.
The iPhone ten S has thirty minutes longer. iPhone tens
Max has the biggest battery they ever put in an iPhone,
although they did not say just how big it is,
but it does offer up to an hour and a
half extra time on the phone. The phones also have
Gigabit Class LTE. Now this is something that Samsung has

(03:13):
been touting on their devices, so now Apple is in
line with those and you can take advantage of T
Mobile's improved six hundred megahertz spectrum, so that's kind of cool.
There's also this really neat dual sim functionality, and this
is made possible through the use of an e SIM. See,
you pop your regular SIM in, but there's also an
e SIM inside, and that means you can have two

(03:33):
lines on one device. So if you carry a work
and a personal phone, you might be able to consolidate
them into one iPhone ten S both lines ring you
can send text from both lines, and Apple has done
a bunch of stuff with software to make it as
easy as possible for folks. Because this is kind of
a foreign concept here in the US, some phones have
had it, but other phones, especially outside the US, have

(03:54):
had it for a while. Now, now let's talk pricing
for the ten s. It starts at nine hundred ninety
nine dollars for the sixty four gig model, eleven hundred
and fifty dollars for the two hundred and fifty six
gigabyte model, and thirteen hundred and fifty dollars for the
five hundred and twelve gigabyte model. But if we go
down the line, Apple is still kind of playing these
little pricing games when it comes to the price and

(04:15):
the storage, especially on the low end. So the way
I figure it, you're really paying two hundred and fifty
dollars more for the least amount of storage on this lineup.
So if we follow the pricing down, which means we
subtract two hundred dollars for half the storage, it would
be five hundred and twelve gigs for thirteen fifty, two
fifty six for eleven fifty one, twenty eight for nine

(04:35):
to fifty, which by the way doesn't exist, and sixty
four gigs for seven hundred and fifty. That's just simple
pattern math. But you're paying nine ninety nine for sixty
four gigs, So realistically nine ninety nine minus seven fifty
two hundred and fifty dollars premium to get that sixty
four gigabyte model, you might as well go for the
two fifty six at eleven fifty. Pricing on the iPhone

(04:57):
ten S max is as fallou sixty four gigs for
one ninety nine dollars, two hundred and fifty six gigs
is twelve hundred and fifty dollars, and five hundred and
twelve gigs is a whopping fourteen hundred and fifty dollars.
The phones are on pre order September fourteenth. They're in
store September twenty first in gold, gray, and silver. All right, now,

(05:19):
let's talk about the iPhone ten R. This is basically
an iPhone eight plus, but without a home button. It
does have an LCD screen, which is less expensive, plus
a less expensive aluminum housing. It feels super light in
the hand, but it does not feel cheap. It just
feels like a nice light phone. It has a big
six point one inch screen that doesn't go quite edge
to edge. It does, but there is some black between

(05:41):
the screen and the edges. I don't think many people
will notice unless they're looking at it side by side
with one of the iPhone ten s's. This is going
to be the phone that I think a lot of
people are going to gravitate towards because it's got that
price tag of seven hundred and fifty dollars for a
sixty four gigabyte model and Apple actually did a pretty
good job of packing this device with good specs. It's
not like a phone that has last year's specs. It

(06:03):
has the same A twelve bionic processor, the same twelve
megapixel wide angle camera as you get in the ten s,
but it only has one lens instead of two, but
it can do the same or a very similar Boca
effect with the software on the camera instead of hardware.
And no, it does not have three D touch, but
it does come in a bunch of fun colors, including yellow, white, coral, black, blue,

(06:26):
and product red. Overall, this is a very full feature device.
You just don't get all of Apple's flagship features, and
the screen resolution isn't as high, but again, most users
are not going to notice unless it's placed next to
one of the higher end devices. So the pricing for
this one seven point fifty for sixty four gigs, seven
ninety nine for one hundred and twenty eight gigs, or

(06:46):
eight ninety nine for two hundred and fifty six gigs.
If we look at that another way, put it in
a column eight ninety nine for two fifty six, seven
ninety nine for one twenty eight, and then it would
be six ninety nine for sixty four because you're having
the storage and you're taking one hundred bucks off. In
this case, that sixty four gigabyte model should really be
six ninety nine and for following the pattern, so your
best bet would be to spring for these seven ninety nine,

(07:08):
one and twenty eight gig model. Here, there's really no
benefit in getting the two fifty six unless you need
the storage because double the storage is not being offered
at a discount. The iPhone ten R is on pre
order October nineteenth. It's in stores on October twenty six.
There you have it, all the basics on the new iPhones. Overall,
these are a great evolution. There's not one revolutionary feature

(07:28):
in any of them. But I think a lot of
people are going to go with the ten R because
you get a lot for your money. You get that
big screen, you get sixty four gigabytes of storage for
seven hundred and fifty dollars, and yes, you get a
very capable camera, so overall it's a pretty good deal.
