Speaker 1 (00:04):
The apps and tips to know to help you buy
and sell your.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Use stuff locally.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Hey there, what's going on. I'm Rich Demiro. This is
Rich on Tech. Okay, So we all know about eBay
and Craigslist. Those have been around forever. They're both fantastic
ways to buy and sell your use stuff online. But
what if you don't feel like dealing with the packing
and the shipping and the scam artists. Well, these are
the next generation of apps to know about that can
help you make some quick cash by selling your stuff

(00:30):
around the house.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
So how this story came about.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
We just bought a new dining room table I needed
to sell my old one. I texted my friend Chris Martinez,
who I know does this stuff on the side, and
he instantly texted me back a laundry list of things
to know, and I said, oh my gosh, I didn't
know any of this stuff, so this has to be
a story. So I went and I interviewed him about
what he does, which basically, by day he's working in TV.
By night he's got the side hustle, which is buying

(00:55):
and selling used furniture that he finds around town.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
His number one pick right now.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
For the best place to buy and sell you stuff locally.
Drum roll, please, Facebook Marketplace something I would not have
thought of. Marketplace is built right into Facebook. All you
have to do is open the app that you already have,
look for the little house icon, and then you get
started with your listing. It's free to buy and sell
through Facebook Marketplace, and people can reach you right through

(01:18):
Facebook Messenger, so that's really easy.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
You can message back and forth.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
But keep in mind you're listing is linked to your profile,
so people can take a quick look at who you are.
But other than that, it's a really easy way to
sell stuff. Of course, it's Facebook, so you know they've
put a lot of energy and effort into the app,
and the way you post is very simple. One interesting
thing that Chris noted about Marketplace. He says that he
thinks Facebook kind of checks up on what you're searching

(01:44):
for on Google and then it will actually put those
items in your news feed, so that you kind of
check out marketplace if you're interested in purchasing something that's
totally possible, that's absolutely plausible. I find that really fascinating
and if Facebook is doing that's actually very smart. So
Facebook Marketplace, that's his number one pick next up after

(02:05):
that is offer up.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
He likes that one.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
He says a lot of people are using offer up,
and if it doesn't sell there, let go is a
nice viable alternative. Now, all of these apps let you
buy and sell for free. In the case of offer
up and let go, they make money on upgrades and
a few extra dollars will boost or feature your listing.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
And one app that I tried personally that did not get.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
Me even one lead was next Door, So I'm not
knocking them, but I did not even get one person
to message me through Nextdoor, So maybe keep that off
your list for now. Now your best bet to sell
fast take good pictures. Make sure your items are all
by themselves so people can get a good look at them.
And also take your pictures from various angles so prospective

(02:47):
buyers can see details, especially things like wear and tear
or scratches, because guess what, you can hide them from
the Facebook pictures or your pictures on these apps. But
if the person comes to pick up the item, they
always have the ability to say, no, I want this,
It's not what you presented it as, So be upfront
and that's going to be your best bet that way,
nobody's surprised when they come to pick up your item.

(03:07):
When it comes to keywords, use good keywords to describe
your item in your listing, and really think in terms
of how people might search for what you're selling. So
put the brand name in there, put the material of
the wood in there, put the color in there, all the.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
Stuff that gets really specific.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
So when people are searching for a particular style or
color or thing, they will find it in your listing.
One interesting aspect to all of this buying and selling,
there's really no need these days to include your phone
number on your post. That's because buyers can message you
right through these apps.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
That's probably the safest way to do it.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
But if you want to have a phone number, sometimes
people just like to put that in their post. It's easier.
Try a service I like called Burner. They will give
you a temporary number that people can call or text
or send pictures to.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
And here's how it works.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
If you want a one line subscription on a monthly basis,
that's five bucks, or you can just do a pre
paid Burner and these are really quick, they're really easy.
You buy credits and let's see a text only Burner
is two hundred and fifty texts. It auto burns in
thirty days and that's five credits. And if you want
to buy five credits, eight credits is five dollars.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
So Burner is not gonna cost too much and it really.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Gives you that extra layer of security. The final tip
Chris offered for buying and selling stuff online, the best
day to sell, he says, above all, it's Sunday. He
describes it as a day of leisure, so he says, you're.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
Gonna make the most sales on a Sunday. There you
have it.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
