Speaker 1 (00:00):
M Welcome to Induction Vault, a production of I Heart
Radio and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is about
to begin. It's time to take your seats in. Learned

(00:31):
musicians across the globe prevailed when the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame welcomed Rush into the pantheon of rock immortals. Fittingly,
renowned drummers Dave Role and Taylor Hawkins of Food Fighters
inducted the trio. As Neil Peart was nothing short of
godlike in the drumming fam Roland Hawkins highlight the superior musicianship,

(00:52):
prolific output, and all around working man philosophy that made
Rush one of the most successful prog bands of all time.
That mary attitude made them weary of industry accolades throughout
the career. But when they received rock's highest honor, here
began his acceptance speech quote, We've been saying for a
long time years that this wasn't a big deal. It

(01:15):
turns out kind of Hello, everybody, my name is Dave Brawl,
I'll Taylor Hawkins, and we are here tonight to induct

(01:35):
Rush into the Rock and Roll Hall of faen rock
and roll has forever been ensconced in mystery. Robert Johnson
selling his soul to the devil that early morning that

(01:56):
Satan knocked upon his door, the death of Paul McCarty
me in nineteen sixty six, and the conspiracy to replace
him with an exact lookalike Elvis sightings, Jim Morrison sightings,
Axel Rose sightings. But there's one mystery that surely eclipses

(02:21):
them all. When the fuck did Rush become cool? It
was seventy six when my cool older stoner cousin gave
me my first copy of Upon first inspection, I was

(02:46):
fascinated by the track listing. The entire side one of
the album was a seven part suite with Roman numerals
and names like the Temples of syrinx H and the
Oracle the Dream. This was far from my Kiss Records,

(03:07):
with such great works of literature like Love Good and
Ladies Room. No, this was something else. This was Heavy Ship.
And then I saw what is perhaps the most infamous
band photo of all time. Three grown men, arms crossed,

(03:40):
standing proudly in white satin kimonos and skin tight pants.
How skin tights? You ask? So skin tight that you
can still find the one, the only guitar god Alex
Lifeson on camel Toe dot Org. But what was inside

(04:10):
is why we are here today. Getty Lee's ripping bass
is incredible, unmistakable voice, Alex Lifeson's soulful, imaginative, melodic, chaotic
guitar solos, and of course, fucking Neil Parhat God. Come on,

(04:34):
this guy spawned a generation of air drummers for decades
to come with this composition, craft and technique. His drumming
was songwriting. It was just as musical, just as melodic
as any other instrument in the band, bringing the drums
where they fucking should be, to the forefront of every song.

(04:59):
But here's the thing about Neil Purp. Not only was
he the most fucking ripping drummer in the world, he
wrote the fucking lyrics. Who let the fucking drummer write
the lyrics? Rush did Baby makes no sense? Playing upwards

(05:20):
of two and fifty shows a year from day one,
the band built its following the right way, no hype,
no bullshit. They did it from the ground up without
any help from the mainstream press. Rush fly by Night,

(05:42):
Caressive Steel one twelve, but farewell the cakes, hemispheres, bourbonent waves,
movie picture signals, grace, under pressure, power windows, hold your fire, presso,
roll the bounds, counterparts, tessper echo, vapor trails, feedback, sakes, scenarrows, clockwork,
a angels. Five years, over forty million records, thousands of

(06:05):
shows selling how to Read Us all over the world.
Their influence is undeniable, and they're devoted fan base only
rivaled by the grateful Dead. Look at you people right there,
all of you right there. And their legacy is that

(06:32):
of a band that stayed true to themselves, no matter
how uncool they may have seemed to anyone. I think
it's safe to say that Rush are indeed a band
that has balls. Alex showed us that, and they've always

(06:55):
been cool. So consider this mystery soul. It is our
honor to finally induct Rush into the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame. After the breath, here the acceptance speeches

(07:18):
of Getty Lee, Alex Lison from Neil Pierre on the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction bolt. We've been

(07:43):
saying for a long time years that this wasn't a
big deal. It turns out it kind of is. Our
sincere haartfelt thanks to David Taylor for doing us the
great honor of indicting us. Yeah, there's is truly the
praise of the praiseworthy. Maybe one day we will be

(08:06):
indicting them. I've always liked to quote from Bob Dylan,
the highest purpose of art is to inspire. What else
can you do for anyone but inspire them? Is gratifying
to think of us having inspired these youngsters to pick
up a pair of drumsticks, a guitar, a rhyming dictionary
and torment their parents as we tormented ours. All the

(08:30):
previous inductees into this pantheon of rock are like a
constellation of stars in the night sky. Among them, we
are one tiny point of light shaped like a maple leaf.
Yea around each star squirrels a galaxy, in our case,

(08:51):
a galaxy of families, the families that raised us, elevated us,
and now the families that ground us, those who remain
and those who are gone. Then there is the family
of people around us who take care of business day
after day, do deal after deal, dime after dime, like
our manager throughout all of this, Ray Daniels. Then there

(09:19):
is the family of people who truly put on the show.
For it is fitting that we received this honor as
a working band in the middle of a tour in
our thirty ninth year. We should always stay thirty nine.
I speak of the road crews, the technicians, the engineers
and co producers are friends and family and these guys.

(09:54):
Thank you guys so much. I have to say this
is a little overwhelm ming for a nice Jewish boy
from Toronto. I've been really fortunate in my life to
be able to spend my time doing something that I
truly love to do, and to do it with two
really terrific partners. That makes it all the sweeter. And

(10:18):
so I'd like to thank Lurks I'm pratt over here,
not only for the privilege of making music together with them,
but for the great pleasure of their mostly hilarious company
for the past four decades. And on behalf of my
two partners, I have to thank the most passionate, most dedicated,

(10:44):
incredible fan base around the globe. That's you, guys, for
not only supporting and encouraging our musical progress over the years,
but for the insistence of their voices, which has most

(11:06):
certainly led us to this evening, we share this honor
with you. Thank you Boa Yeah Blah blah blah blah

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
