Speaker 1 (00:07):
Hey there, folks. It is Friday, October third, and the
guy from Succession is also a corner and it makes
for one of the best horror movies you are gonna see.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
You.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
Welcome to Deep Cuts, our countdown here on Amy and
TJ of the best horror movies that you might not
know and Robes this was I think I was this
one I introduced you to I'll take credit for I
love this movie.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
You absolutely introduced this one to me. I had seen
it on my streaming services and I just thought, I
don't know what is that movie about. And you saw
it and you said, no, you have to watch this movie.
And so we sat down and watched it, and you
did not oversell it.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
It was amazing.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
One of my favorite horror movies that was sitting there
in front of me the whole time that I never
actually clicked on to watch, and when I did, I
did not regret it.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
Okay, here we go, folks, and this is number twenty
nine on our list of Deep Cuts, as we count
down to our favorite horror movies that maybe you have
never heard of, and even Robes the title of this
one won't this intrigue people? So number twenty nine on
our list, folks.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
The Autopsy of Jane Doe. It's a twenty sixteen horror mystery.
It runs in that sweet spot of an hour and
twenty six minutes, as you'll find most of our movies do.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
Here's the synopsis for you.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
A corner and his son conduct an autopsy on a
beautiful Jane Doe murder victim and find increasingly bizarre clues.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
I almost don't want to give more than that, because
this movie, you'd have no idea where this thing is going,
and then when you find out in the end, you go, oh,
holy hell. I never would have thought of that. This
movie is intriguing from the jump. And you said a
corner and his son. The corner is Brian Cox, an
award winning actor who is best known at least as
(02:06):
of Late Robes for Succession. Yes, that's a lead in
that show.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
You know his face immediately when you see it. And
Emil Hirsh that is that's the model. You went and
did a deep dive on the Jane Doe in the movie.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
So the Jane Doe. So this movie, Yes, they are
performing an autopsy on a Jane Doe literally what the
title says, but really robes.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
It.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
Even though Brian Cox is in there. The star of
the movie may be someone that you never heard of
who never says a word the whole movie and literally
lays there the whole time. Its U's a model named
Olwen Kelly, and she is laying on this autopsy table
(02:53):
naked in kind of white, pale skin the entire movie essentially,
and robes as wild as it seems. She gets so
much credit for putting on a good performance.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
It's true.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
She really is playing a dead corpse, and yet it's
so good. And yes, Emil Hirsh is the sun and
he is also a familiar face, and the.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
Acting is so good.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
I actually was so impressed with that because, look, I
passed it over because I just thought, well, you know what,
is this some lame autopsy. It's going to be gross
body horror. It's gonna be grotesque. It's gonna be gross.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
Honestly, I was.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
So wrong about this movie, and you were so right.
It got eighty six percent on Rotten Tomatoes. By the way,
so the critics agreed with you, and the critics consensus.
I'm going to read this for you because I think
you'll feel validated. The autopsy of Jane Doe subverts the
gruesome expectations triggered by its title, which is exactly why
I didn't tune in to deliver a smart, suggestively creepy
(04:04):
thriller that bolsters director Andre Overdall's growing reputation. So I
actually then looked at the director overdll He's done.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
I don't do you know any of these movies?
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Future Murder, troll Hunter, Scary Stories to tell in the Dark, Mortal,
and The Last Voyage of Demeter.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
You know the last one, Yes, the Last Voyage of
the Demeter. It did not get a lot of great
reviews in by critics, and it wasn't a big box
office success, but it was the story of Dracula coming
over across the sea on this particular boat, the Demeter.
I love that for a lot of reasons. So when
you pointed that out, I was like, Oh, okay, I
(04:45):
do like this guy. He does some stuff that I
do like, but this I guess maybe is that a
reason you skipped over it as well? Because of the title.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Yes, so I thought when I saw the critics consensus
after we watched it, I also felt validated because it
says you have a certain expectation it's going to be gruesome.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
I'm not in the mood for an autopsy.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
You know, you sit down on a Friday night or
a Saturday night, and when I see autopsy, I don't
necessarily want to watch.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
And this is coming from somebody who when you see.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
Exorcism, I'll watch that, but I don't want to watch
an autopsy. So I think that is absolutely why I
skipped over this movie because of the title. So we're
here to tell you do not skip over this movie
because of the title.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
And here's the deal.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
The budget was four million, the box office only six
point one seven, so this was a sleeper and yet
highly reviewed. And we can absolutely attest to the fact
that this is highly entertaining. I love that this is
on our list because I think this is something that a.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
Lot of people have overlooked.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
We know it when you look at the box office,
and yet when you do take the time, your hour
and twenty six minutes, I really don't think you'll regret it.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
I can't imagine not being entertained by this.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
The acting is stella to your point, but it's this
one is non stop suspense. You're like, wait, what they
were all there? Are a number of shocking moments, a
few jump scares, but this is a mystery that builds,
and every time they reveal another piece of the mystery,
it becomes I think, more tense. It adds to tension
(06:19):
in the room every time a new mystery is revealed,
and you owe the whole time, like, guys, get the
hell out of there. Yes, it is the wonderful I.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Want them to get out so badly. So I wrote
down why it made the list for me. And it's
funny I heard you just say that, So I wrote
this movie is gripping. It slowly and creepily builds, and
you have no idea what is going on, and you
have no idea what is going to happen next, and
you will sit there and you will try to figure
it out and you will be wrong. The acting is phenomenal,
(06:48):
the script is phenomenal. But I also love the fact
that there's a dramatic storm. There's weather going on, so
they're in this basement to paint the picture for you.
Brian Cox the corner and his son have a basically
I guess they're medical examiners and they have a basically
a cremation room or some sort of a funeral home
(07:11):
esque set up in their basement.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
Examining, and you know what, you to your point, the
setting actually adds to the dread. You are literally in
a and you feel like you're in the basement where
they perform autopsies, they store dead bodies, they cremate dead bodies,
and everything it's dark and that's dark wool.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
There's scary elevator and it's like dark brick. Everything's dark.
Everything is so the setting is perfect. And yes, you're
not in some hospital clinic, medical examiner's office. No, you're
in someone's like victorian home basement, like you know, one
of those old school funeral homes. It's one of those.
So it just adds to this creepy feeling of being trapped.
(07:53):
There's a storm like blowing outside, like there's tornado warnings
or whatever it is going on, and so the.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
Sheriff shows up late says, hey, we need we got
a Jane Doe need you to do this tonight and
it's very important. So that's the setup. They were all
headed home essentially for the night. It's late, there's a storm,
sheriff comes, I need you to really tell me how
this girl died.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
And then the young son is trying to go out
and hang out with his girlfriend, but he gets pulled
back in out of duty to his father.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
So there's a while this dramatic storm.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
While this dramatic weather's going on upstairs, supernatural events are
happening simultaneously, and you don't know what's the storm, what's
the supernatural? How this dead body has anything to do
with it?
Speaker 3 (08:36):
It is so good. So who is this movie for?
What would you say, TJ?
Speaker 1 (08:43):
I would this is not a lot. And again, some
people don't like horror because they don't like gore. There's
not a lot of that. There is an autopsy going on,
but it's not that gruesome throughout. You don't see killing
and death necessarily throughout, but you do see hearts of
an autopsy, and there's some body gore.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
There is some, but it's not as much as you
would expect.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
And again, so I am the guy who hates bodygore
in a movie, and I love this movie.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
So for me, it says a lot.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
That does that says a lot.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
I think.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
Again, this is a one like the previous one we
talked about. You have to sit and you pay attention.
You need to invest in this movie, you can't look
away and then turn back when you think an action
unique because it builds so beautifully little moments. You remember
the bell is what there's a bell involved?
Speaker 3 (09:32):
You know, they put a bell on the.
Speaker 1 (09:33):
Toe of a of a dead body.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
That plays significantly in this movie.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
This movie is just tense and it's creepy. And this
is another one Robes. Don't you dare watch this movie alone.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
I don't think you should watch this movie alone at all.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
So I think this is for anyone who loves a mystery,
anyone who loves to be surprised, anyone who loves to
try and guess what's going to happen next, and you know,
you get disappointed when it's so obvious, like Dove, of
course that's the killer, or Dove, of course that person's
gonna die.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
That is not this movie.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
This movie will keep you guessing about what is going
to happen next and what is going on in this place.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
So I absolutely think that should.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
Pretty much sum up anybody who loves a thriller or
a who done it? Or what the hell is going
on here? And that is absolutely this is the movie
for you. Now coming up after the break We're gonna
tell you who this movie is not for. What you
should pair it with, food, drink, snack, ambiyonce, and where
you can watch it. Welcome back to our horror hit list.
(10:48):
I love that deep cuts. You're getting used to the title,
yet TJ still don't like it.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
Horror hitless.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
All right, So these are the horror movies we're counting
down to Halloween that you might not have seen, that
you might have passed over, that you might not have
even heard about. And this one is number twenty nine
on our list. It is one of our absolute favorites.
The Autopsy of Jane Doe. We just told you who
this movie is for. We're now going to tell you
who this movie is not for. I think if you
(11:19):
can't stand suspense, if that drives you crazy, if you
don't like looking at dead bodies or even the idea
of an autopsy, or you don't like demons or dark
and closed spaces, if you can't handle a little bit
of blood and guts. It isn't a slasher. We've made
that very very clear. It's not exceptionally gory.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
You may sell those movies with nobody. Well, you don't
like this, here's the deal.
Speaker 3 (11:42):
Some horror movie folks love a thriller, love a suspense.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
But they don't like demons, like that's too scary, or
they don't like claustrophobic kind of feeling, like dark.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
And closed spaces.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
I feel like this definitely has some of those elements
to it.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
But it's not a slasher.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
It's a supernatural threat, I believe, is the best way
to put it.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
But I have friends who will watch a slasher, but.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
They don't want to watch anything to do with the
demon because that's too scary for them. So I understand that.
So if you don't like supernatural, you should not watch
this movie.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
But then don't you say I have people that are
the opposite as well. Right, yeah, it's whatever your preference is.
But this is an absolute, a hair raising I have goosebumps,
chill fest and it is wonderful. But you are I mean, look,
give your heads up. You are looking at almost the
(12:34):
entire movie, three quarters of it a day, a dead body,
a woman laid out naked on this table, but a
wonderful performance by the woman in that role. As crazy
as it seems to say, she has a gap in
her tooth, even she has her eyes are open, and
her her the color of her eye, everything about her.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
It's weird, you think, And you remember, I was just
thinking if she was a friend of mine or I
hung out with her, it would probably freak me out
because you look at this body and it's a beautiful
body by the way, a beautiful face, a beautiful body,
but you look at it for so long during this movie,
and it's so creepy.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
I think it would be.
Speaker 2 (13:08):
I wonder how how her acting career has gone on
from there, because I actually googled her and I was like, WHOA,
there she is.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
So I don't know.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
If this maybe even hurt her acting career because that's
all I can see is her dead body in the Autopsy.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
Of Jane Doe. I wonder, But her role is great.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
And again, Brian Cox is so good, so good in
everything he does, and this is another one he should
be given credit for. Ro This movie is who would
I tell what we're saying who? This movie is not for, right,
is what we're getting at. This is not for somebody
who doesn't have a friend to watch movies with. This
(13:49):
is another one that is spooky.
Speaker 3 (13:52):
I wouldn't want to watch it alone.
Speaker 1 (13:53):
Noises down the hallway door slamming, you know, banging. There's
even a cat in this one that plays a significant role.
This is one that just will creep you out with
every noise you hear in the house after you watch it.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
I would also add to that if there is a storm,
don't watch it during a storm, because if you know,
like light's going out, weird noises, like anytime a storm
is coming, that would I mean, if you're with friends,
it might be fun to watch it in that environment,
like I'm weird like that. That would actually make me
want to turn this one on. But for some people
this might not be the time.
Speaker 1 (14:30):
You make a good point. This is a good group movie. Damn,
I didn't think about that. And maybe that's the way
we should consider some of these movies a one on one.
Sometimes I just want to sit and watch one with you,
And then sometimes it's cool to have a group experience.
This is a good group experience.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
Agreed.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
Agreed? That good? All right, So you've got your group,
you don't have a storm brewing. What would you pair
this movie with in terms of snacks, drinks, food, and setting?
What would you say, Yes, we set a group setting,
but beyond that what would you put with this?
Speaker 3 (14:57):
You know what I would say, don't do red wine
in state.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
I think that'd be a really tough pairing with this movie.
Speaker 1 (15:04):
I'm trying to think of eating a dead body. Okay,
I am this is you know this how I am.
Even when we go to movies that aren't big horror movies.
I don't like eating in the movie. There, you don't.
I don't like ordering a full meal. Yeah, I'll take
the chicken caesadias while I'm watching. No, I don't want that.
Give me some popcorn, give me my drink, and let's go.
So it's hard for me to pair food in this one.
(15:24):
This is a hard one to eat. I'm picturing myself
the throw blanket, like actually feet up on the couch.
Like you don't need to be sitting normally for this one.
You need to be curled up fetal position if you want,
but you need to be like completely up and tucked
in in some way, and possibly with somebody to watch
(15:45):
this movie. I love this.
Speaker 2 (15:46):
I'm gonna pick here's what I would drink with this movie,
and espresso martini because I would want to stay really heightened.
I would want to have some caffeine, but also feel
a little relaxed. But I'd want to really be into it.
And and I again, no steak.
Speaker 3 (16:02):
I could not.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
I don't think I can eat meat with this movie.
Just when I'm looking at a dead body. I think
I'd keep it to like a vegetarian light dish, like
a salad.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
I would just keep it light. I wouldn't want anything
that had to do with meat.
Speaker 1 (16:15):
This is what I would say. This is a late
night movie like this is one. It is if it's
ten o'clock and you're still kind of wired and you
look at your partner like you know what you want
to watch it. This is a late at ten o'clock
because it will keep you up. This is when you're
not gonna fall asleep on if you start watching.
Speaker 2 (16:33):
Especially if you have my espresso Martini o'clock, that espresso
martini Caesar salad.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
That's my thing.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
All right, We're gonna tell you where you can watch
this now, because this is like you know how you're
going and trying to find where you can find the movie.
Speaker 3 (16:47):
Here's what I came up with.
Speaker 2 (16:48):
Right now, if you have Hulu and you have the
Showtime Paramount Plus package, you can absolutely watch it, and
if you have Amazon Prime and you have the Paramount
Plus package, you can watch it there too.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
Oh I have I have all of those.
Speaker 1 (17:02):
Wait, so it's just no param Plus.
Speaker 2 (17:03):
Yeah, but then you can also go onto Amazon Prime
or Hulu and it's all part of it. Yes, but
that's just the obvious place to find it. Of course,
you can always purchase it for less than five bucks
on Apple TV as well, so it's readily available, highly recommended.
You are not gonna regret watching this The Autopsy of
Jane Doe.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
It's amazing.
Speaker 2 (17:23):
So we're gonna tease ahead now for tomorrow's This will
be number twenty eight. The next movie. We don't want
to give away the.
Speaker 3 (17:32):
Title, but I will tell you this.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
If you like a movie about young folks, like in
their twenties going on vacation.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
Right, So, this is a group of.
Speaker 2 (17:42):
Probably twenty somethings going and looking for some fun during
a sunny holiday in Mexico. And we told you that
the other two we've just given you aren't that gruesome.
We'll forget that on this one. This one is gruesome.
This one is gory, and if you like that, you're
gonna love of Number twenty eight, and we'll get that
to you in our next episode.
