Speaker 1 (00:01):
Morning Run with Amy and TJ and iHeartRadio Podcast. Good
morning everyone, Thanks for joining us for today's Morning Run.
It's Wednesday, October First.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
I'm Amy Robots and I'm TJ Holmes. Yes, the post
office is still working. It's still running. Your mail is
still coming, but a lot of other stuff is closed. Yes,
we're at a shutdown. We knew this was coming. Why
am I still I feel like, Oh, it actually happened.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Yeah, they all said it was going to happen, warned
they were at an impasse, and sure enough here we are.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Okay, but yes, let you know that's the question. Yes,
the post office is open, your air traffic controller is
still going to work, but a lot of people will not.
We'll get into what this all means today and how
does this keep happening as well? Have you all seen
the latest adult behaving badly in the stands and snatching
swag from a child. It's happened again.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
It's disgusting and can we not all learn a lesson
from this? This is basic human decency in my opinion,
But to see someone get caught then dina there it
is defend and then ultimately say whoopsie after getting pummeled online.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
We'll tell you about the woman now dubbed the Kansas
City Karen. Also kind of a cool scene last night.
Colbert and Kimmel did kind of a crossover show to
see those two together in late night. They had one
sole purpose, they said, which was, as you could guess,
to piss off the President of the United States and
robes who were hoping maybe well kind of started with rumors,
(01:29):
it ended up being confirmed, and now it's I guess
double confirmed if you will. About Nicole Kidman and Keith Urpan.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Yes, we heard word that they had separated, but there
was still hope that perhaps they could reconcile. Not so
much because Nicole Kidman filed for divorce yesterday officially.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
But yes, the latest there and you will hear nothing
but what the facts are here, because there are wild,
wild rumors flying around all over the place. And one
other nugget this morning, a kid that probably most people
have never heard of, and if you saw his name
you probably couldn't pronounce it has now signed a record
professional contract in this country, and I would like to
(02:08):
say congratulations to him. We'll tell you who he is.
A reminder here, take a look at that Apple podcast
app top right corner where it says follow click that
button you can get our updates coming to you any time.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
And also on the run this morning, Humas is on
the clock. A judge disappoints, did he once again? TRUMPRX
dot gov is coming soon, hegsat, tells generals to shape
up or ship out. No landfall, but two storms are
causing both death and destruction.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
But what's on everybody's mind this morning is the fact that, yes,
here we are again that the government is shut down, folks.
And a lot of folks will tell you this is unnecessary.
Where they should all be unnecessary, right if they're doing
their jobs. The job is to keep the government funded.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
Well, that would be the most basic thing that our
lawmakers should be doing. And so yeah, we do begin
our run on this Wednesday morning with word that the
government is officially closed for business. The feared yet foreshadowed
government shutdown kicked in officially at twelve oh one last
night after Democrats and Republicans failed to agree on a
temporary spending measure that would have could have kept the
(03:17):
government open while those two sides negotiated a longer term deal.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Yeah, so an estimated seven hundred and fifty thousand federal
workers are being furloughed, in other words, told not to
come to work and don't expect a check. They are. However,
federal employees entitled legally to back pay once they come back,
but we don't know how long they're going to be out.
And yes, rent is due now. Well, many essential workers
(03:43):
still have to show up to work. We're talking about
members of the military, air traffic controllers. Yes, but they
are required to show up to work even though they
are not getting paid. Some people told to stay home,
but some essential folks have to come. Still not getting paid.
You know who is getting paid? Yes, Members of Congress.
Their checks keep coming. Also, of note, Medicare, Social Security,
(04:03):
those services are expected to keep running and those benefits
continuing as usual.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
Though the shutdown is just starting, there is actually no
end in sight. The two sides keep doing more talking
in front of the cameras blaming one another, than they're
actually doing behind the scenes negotiating a deal. This is
the first shutdown we've had since twenty eighteen. That one
lasted a little over a month. It cost the US
economy and estimated three billion dollars. But this fight is
(04:33):
far from over. Democrats want a trillion dollars added to
the budget for healthcare costs and to undo some of
the spending cuts that the Republicans fought hard to get
in that big beautiful bill. So we are truly at
an impasse. And it's a game of chicken at this point.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
And they are in no mood right now, given some
of the I guess recent losses. Some in their base
might say to cave. So they are really really digging in.
There is no end, and nobody is talking at this point.
They weren't even at work.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
No, they're working at AI generated memes circling those around
about each other. That's what's happening, all.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Right, you continue on the run here on this Wednesday morning. Well,
that was awkward, right, a room full of generals being
told by the Secretary of Defense that it's a bad
look for there to be fat admirals and generals commanding troops.
Those were his words. That was just one of a
number of eyebrow raising nuggets dropped by the Defense Secretary
(05:34):
Pete Hegseth during yesterday's extraordinary meeting of top military leaders.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
That's right. Heg Seth last week ordered all one Star
and above leaders to come to Quantico for the meeting.
At the time, no one knew exactly why. Well now
we do know. It was to deliver this message shape
up or ship out. Eight hundred plus generals and admirals
got a talking to from Hegseeth on everything from fitness
to grooming to wokeness. He announced a return to the
(05:59):
highest me standards for service members and training, and if
that means women don't qualify, it is what it is.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
They also laid out new requirements for personal training and fitness,
saying that generals and admirals would not be exempt. And
I quote here now, frankly, it's tiring to look out
at combat formations or really any formation and see fat troops. Likewise,
it's completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals in
the halls of the Pentagon and leading commands around the
(06:28):
country and the world. It's a bad look. It is bad,
and it's not who we are. End quote. He also
made clear that there would be no more, as he
put it, identity months or DEI offices.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
At one point, Hegseth even suggested anyone who had an
issue with what he was saying, well they should do
the honorable thing and leave the generals. Also heard from
President Trump. He spoke afterwards, and a lot of ears
perked up when he suggested that he may use troops
using US cities as training grounds.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
What we're seeing in Chicago and Memphis and Portland and DC.
That got a lot of people's attention. Continuing here on
the run. Now, peace in the Middle East on hold,
and the clock is ticking. President Trump gave Hamas three
to four days, as he put it, to accept the
US backed peace plan for Gaza. Mediators from Cutter and
Egypt presented the twenty point plan to Hamas late Monday,
(07:20):
after the proposal was announced at a joint press conference
with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Trump.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
Hamas was not involved in any of those negotiations, but
the plan would require the terrorist organization to disarm, which
is the demand the group has previously rejected. It did
say though, it would review the plan in good faith
and provide a response. Trump gave this warning to Hamas
if it did not accept the peace proposal, saying Hamas
is either going to do it or not, and if
(07:48):
it's not, it's going to be a very sad end.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
All right, continuing on the run here now. At what
was billed as a historic press conference yesterday, President Trump
announced a new website where America can get heavily discounted medications.
The website will be called trumprx dot gov.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
We've been having a lot of historic press conferences.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
Oh yeah, the autism was yes.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
That was yes, and then we had the historic meeting
by Hegsath. So there's just a lot of history being made.
This is all part of the deal between the administration
and Peiser in which the pharmaceutical company is going to
sell certain medications directly to consumers. Peiser will offer what's
referred to as most Favored Nations pricing to US customers. Basically,
(08:33):
they're going to charge the same price to US customers
as they do to folks in other countries. We don't
know the details, we don't know which medications, we don't
know exactly when the website will launch. We believe it
sometime next year, and we're not exactly sure how much
the drugs will cause. Because this was interesting what the
President said, Okay, he.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
Gave us an idea of how discounted these drugs might be.
He said the prices will be discounted quote anywhere between
fifty percent and even one hundred.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Percent, meaning they're free.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
I try, I'm missing something. Somebody helped me. I'm missing something.
I'm even trying to figure out what he may be
meant by that, but I can't find I can't figure
it out.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
One hundred percent usually means if it's one hundred percent off,
that means it's free. That means it's zero.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
This costs one hundred dollars. It's ninety percent off, so
it's cost ten dollars.
Speaker 1 (09:25):
Right, I mean, maybe some medications will be free.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
Maybe that's what he's trying to say. Maybe, okay, maybe
that's it. Then Pfizer came back and said, actually, the
drugs are going to be discounted fifty to eighty five percent.
I can make that.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
That makes more sense.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
It makes sense of those numbers. Also, if folks are
getting excited about this is not for folks who are
using insurance to pay for their to pay for their medications.
They're even some out there arguing that some people who
go through this website are still going to end up
paying more than somebody who actually has insurance. Okay, Still,
if this gives you a cheaper option than that's a
(09:58):
good thing. Also, Pfizer, isn't this great that the company
got on board and they want to start doing this
for the American people. No, folks, it's not out of
the goodness of their pharmaceutical hearts. The administration has threatened
a one hundred percent tariff on drug companies if they
don't cooperate and finding ways to bring down drug costs.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
Maybe he got that one hundred percent confused. He meant
to put it there and he put it in the
other place. You know what that.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
Could have been it I can actually buy that.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
Okay. He might have just had that figure in his
head because he was threatening that. All right. Next up
on the Run, Diddy has been told no again by
a judge after what really was his last ditch Hail
Mary attempt to avoid extended prison time. The judge yesterday
late yesterday denied Shawcomb's request to have his two convictions
thrown out or to get a new trial.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
Yeah. Diddy's defense team argued that his convictions for transportation
to engage in prostitution were invalid. In part. You remember
this was fascinating. It was a violation of his First
Amendment right because he was filming these free costs. It
was some form of expression and he shouldn't go to
prison for that. Well, the judge wasn't convinced by the
defense arguments. The judge made sense of this to me,
(11:09):
roobes with this line, A legal activity can't be laundered
into constitutionally protected activity. That Well said made sense.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
He's good at his job, you're not.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
You can't say my first Amendment is being violated while
you're over here committing crimes in the middle and try
to clean it up. Laundered.
Speaker 1 (11:29):
That made perfect sense using the word laundered. That was perfect.
That was a perfect verb, all right. So Friday now
is officially sentencing day for Diddy. His team has argued
for a fourteen month sentence, meaning he would pretty much
walk out that day for credit for good behavior and
credit for time served. The prosecution, though, is asking for
(11:50):
eleven years and three months, so it will be very
interesting to see where the judge places his sentence given
those two acts with very different years.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
Year gap in what they're asking for. Next up on
the Run here now, even though hurricanes Umberto and Immelda
will not make landfall here in the US, they are
still wreaking havoc along the shores of North Carolina. As
video out there, you might have seen of several five
at least unoccupied houses along the outer banks collapsing into
the Atlantic Ocean high surf and waves, or crashing into them.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
Authorities are warning that even more collapses are possible given
the two storms offshore, and ask people to avoid the
area for several miles in each direction, given the uncertain
conditions of the ocean and the debris they say that
has now scattered the entire shoreline from those houses. North
Carolina's coast has been eroding for years. I didn't know this.
Seventeen privately owned houses have collapsed into the ocean since
(12:49):
twenty twenty.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
Wow, that is erosion. Meantime, Bermuda under a hurricane warning
today after Emberto passed north of the island Tuesday, and
the meld, which is expected to strengthen to a category
two hurricane later today, takes aim at Bermuda tonight. Bermuda's airport, schools,
and government officer are all closed today in preparation for
(13:10):
the storm.
Speaker 1 (13:11):
All Right, next up on the run. First their separation
was confirmed, and now Nicole Kidman has made it official
filing for divorce from Keith Urban yesterday in Nashville. Kidman
listed their date of separation as the date of filing,
which is September thirtieth, three months after celebrating their nineteenth
wedding anniversary.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
She did cite irreconcilable differences as the reason for the divorce.
There's been speculation, rumors out there swirling about what's going
on with these two and what might have been going on,
but neither of these two, Keith Urban or Nicole Kidman,
have said anything officially and publicly, And we just urge
everybody please be careful and be kind with the stuff
(13:52):
that's going on out there. It is, as you can imagine, nasty,
but everybody's trying to get in a one line or
say something funny or speculate. Just be careful and be kind,
is the best I can say.
Speaker 1 (14:03):
It adds insult to injury. They're already going through a
tough time. If any of you have gone through a
split or certainly divorce, you know how hard it is
when you're doing it privately. Doing it publicly is excruciating.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
All right, Well, folks, stay with us here on the run.
When we come back They have dubbed her the Kansas
City Karen. Yes, another adult snatching memorabilia from the clutches
of a child. Also, Colbert and Kimmel on the same
stage last night, and I would love to be on
the same stage with this kid from Russia because he
(14:34):
just signed one of the richest contracts we have ever
seen any professional.
Speaker 1 (14:39):
Sports continuing now on this Wednesday morning run. Next up
on the Run, another record setting professional sports contract. This
time it's hockey.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
It's kind of surprising to see that we have record
setting NFL contracts every four weeks, and here we got
a hockey one. This one's cool. This is twenty eight
year old's kid from Russia. I say kid because I'm
forty eight. I guess what twenty eight year old career
kappers off. He just signed the richest contract in NHL history.
He agreed to a eight year, one hundred and thirty
(15:19):
six million dollars deal. It's going to pay him seventeen
million dollars a year, and that breaks the record, I
guess by three million. The previous record was fourteen million.
But congratulations to him. He was even a fifth round pick,
so he wasn't some superstar.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
Well, Yeah, congrats to him. The overall amount and the
annual amount are the largest in hockey history. And if
you don't follow hockey, he's a Russian who plays for
the Minnesota Wild.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
Congrats to him. Continuing on the run here now, Jimmy
Kimmel Stephen Gobert joined forces last night had a crossover
show and in their words, we thought it might be
a fun way to drive the president nuts. And if
you see any of the pictures in any but they
were hamming it up, they looked like they were genuinely
happy to be together.
Speaker 1 (16:04):
That makes a lot of sense. So yes, they appeared
on each other's show last night. Kimmel is doing a
series of shows from Brooklyn this week, and it was
so interesting to hear how Kimmel found out about being
taken off the air. He said, he got this mystery
call ABC wants to talk to you. He said, he
has like five people in his office, so he had
to go into the bathroom and so he's in the
bathroom as they're telling him we're taking you off the air.
(16:27):
It was so interesting. He said, I really think it's
a bad idea, and they said, we think it's a
good idea, but he said he thought he was never
coming back, and I actually was afraid of that as well,
that that was going to be the case, because once
you get pulled off the air, it makes it very
difficult for them to then reverse that decision. We got
a similar call we did, and I actually said the
(16:47):
same thing. Please don't do this. You are making a
huge mistake.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
Because we didn't want you come off. You're never coming back.
Speaker 1 (16:54):
At least that. Well, thank god Kimmel came back. He
didn't suffer our same faith.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
All right, final leg of the run. Here we have
another one. We have another so called Karen making the
rounds Kansas City. Karen is what she's being known as now.
Her actual name is Nina Miller. She's put herself and
identified herself and put her been out there. So it's
a remarkable how this thing robes keeps playing out. And
(17:18):
maybe there is a way to defend an adult being
caught up in the moment where we're seeing adults snatching
memorabilia sports memorabilia from the clutches of a child in
the stands.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
Once again, Miller was caught on camera grabbing a Patrick
Mahomes game worn headband from a child who was celebrating
his birthday. Yes, the same exact scenario in the video.
You can clearly there is no doubt that Mahomes is
handing over his headband to this young boy who was
dressed in a Chief's jersey. He's a Kansas City Chiefs fan.
(17:52):
And then just as the boy was taking it from Mahomes,
a woman Miller dressed in New York Giants gear, grabs
it in instead.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
Oh, New Yorkers, don't we have a tough enough wrap?
Sometimes after the Internet identified her, she went to TikTok,
and initially she tried to deny that she took the
headband from the boy. She continued to defend herself, and
she was pretty defiant in how she was defending. I
was surprised at that first video. I didn't know about
(18:22):
the existence of a second video.
Speaker 1 (18:24):
It reminded me of our quote of the day yesterday.
You can learn great things from your mistakes when you
aren't busy defending denying them.
Speaker 2 (18:32):
Oh my goodness, oh my god.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
You can learn great things from your mistakes when you
aren't busy denying them. She spent how long was it?
A three and a half minute TikTok video completely denying
that she did this.
Speaker 2 (18:43):
Okay, okay, that is absolutely perfect because that is what
she did, but she changed her tune pretty dramatically in Rome.
This is probably no without a doubt. She saw the
heat that was coming.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
Away, without a doubt. She said, the game, with all
the noise and excitement, I honestly thought that Pat Mahomes
was giving me the headband. Then she went on to
say she felt horrible when she found out it was
meant for the boy's tenth birthday. She said she was
sorry to everyone, but most of all, she said, I'm
sorry to Joey. I'm sorry I ruined your day. It
wasn't my intention. Well, her critics weren't buying it and
(19:18):
left further comments like I'm sorry I got caught. She
felt horrible because she's getting dragged all over social media.
Speaker 2 (19:25):
Okay, she did make a plead to the public, saying
I've seen the comments. Some of them are cruel, even hard,
But I'm human. I make mistakes. I'm not perfect, but
I'm also a mom. I'm also a Christian, and I'm
admitting when i'm wrong, and I'm trying to make it right.
She says she's trying to find the boy and asking
for TikTok's help to connect them so she can return
the headband. She did the right thing in apologizing. She
(19:48):
want to say it was late, it was late, but
it did come. I give her credit for that. The moments, though,
I'm the adults, I think they do get caught up
in the moment, because at that moment, she was just
as excited as that child was she. I think she
probably didn't notice or acknowledge or I just think the
adults in those moments because I've seen those scrums happen
(20:09):
so much, and the athletes try to hand it one
direction and everybody goes for it, and she was.
Speaker 1 (20:14):
She was excited, sure in the moment, but then for
her the kid came after her and was like it
was mine, Like you could see he was like so upset.
So for her to say. In fact, in that first
video when she was denying it, she was saying, no
one came up to me, no adult came and I'm
a little I'm one hundred and twelve pounds soaking wet.
I would have handed it over if someone had confronted me.
(20:35):
Oh yeah, oh, she was like, I would have if
someone had confronted me was this video. The first one,
she was denying it, saying she didn't do anything wrong.
No one demanded her give it back, so she was
denying and her tone was really aggressed, like it was aggressive.
Then the next one she's all like, I'm sorry. It
was tough. When you watch them one right after the other,
(20:55):
like I did, I encourage everyone to do it. It's
it's hard to buy her apology.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
Maybe those areas should be reserved for nothing but kids.
Maybe grown folks shouldn't be down there screaming and yelling
for a sports hero to give me your sweaty headband
in the first place. Maybe those things should just be
reserved for the kids. All right, Well, I can't wait
to see what your quote of the day. I haven't
seen it yet, so folks, hold on, let's listen to
it together. This is something we want you to consider
as you go about you day.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
This is perspective with all that's going on, no matter
how good or bad you have it, wake up each
day thankful for your life. Someone somewhere else is desperately
fighting for theirs.
Speaker 2 (21:32):
Hey, man, ain't that the truth? You opened a gift
every single morning, congratulation you just got another day. It's
a gift every single morning to wake up. So isn't
that crazy. That's a good way to put it, and
you put in that perspective. I don't like comparative suffering
kind of a thing sometimes, but you gotta consider, are
(21:52):
you really complaining about a life somebody is desperate to
hold on to.
Speaker 1 (21:56):
It's funny I thought about because I know you and
I have talked about comparative suffer that well. You know,
if you're hurting, we'll think about someone else can't use
their legs, like, Okay, that doesn't help me with my
pain right now, so that's not really helped. But I
did love how this was phrased. No matter how good
or bad you have it, wake up each day thankful
for your life. Someone somewhere else is desperately fighting for theirs.
(22:19):
And with that everyone, I'm Amy Robach and I'm TJ.
Speaker 2 (22:22):
Holmes. We'll see y'all soon.
