Speaker 1 (00:01):
Morning Run with Amy and TJ and iHeartRadio Podcast. Good
morning everyone, It's Tuesday, July twenty ninth. Welcome to Morning Run.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
I'm Amy Robots and I'm TJ Holmes. Walk Faster today.
This is one I'm not sure I believe robes. They
are saying, folks, if you just walk a little faster,
you are not gonna believe how much life you can save.
I don't know about this one. This is incredible.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Hey, I just would love this to be shouted out
from the streets of New York City for all the tourists.
Walk faster.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
You just took it. This is where you are today.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
I was reading I mean my brain did go there
when I read the article.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
But yes, there is a new evidence out there. We
talked about it last week, how many hours you need
to walk, But now they're saying just simply walking faster
can have huge benefits. We'll get into that. And we
now know it was a really fascinating and emotional press
conference yesterday. We know what happened to Coach Prime. He
had been We know Deon Sanders had some medical issues.
(00:57):
He was kind of coy about it, but yesterday he
led everyone know he has now beaten cancer. So it
was a very emotional time. But it was some trademark
prime time stuff he had in there as well and
looked cool.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Images He looked distinctive. I mean, he can't forget what
he was wearing, but yeah, you know he had You know,
there was always some cancer humor, a little joke, a
little laughter when you're dealing with some very heavy, tough stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
But I thought it was.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Really admirable how he handled it, even with his family,
putting his sons first and putting others first, not wanting
them to come down into this really tough spot with him,
and he kind of bore the brunt of it himself.
It was very admirable.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
So we'll get into a lot of those details and
what he's going to do about the upcoming season, if
he's going to be coaching. And we also got another
what had happened was explanation from President Trump about his
relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. We will get into that. He
can't avoid those questions at all. But on the run
this morning, we do have to start and this was
the big story yesterday, a shocker here in New York.
(01:58):
There was terror in a town Manhattan, high rise. A
man strolls into the building at rush hour with an
assault rifle and opens fire. He killed four people, including
an NYPD officer. We have some updates from overnight we'll
give you in just a moment.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
And another shocking shooting yesterday in Reno, Nevada, a man
killed three people after opening fire there at a popular casino.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Also, a double murderer is still on the loose in Arkansas.
Police now have a sketch of the man they say
killed two parents who were on a hike with their
young children.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
And Epstein associate Gilene Maxwell is asking the Supreme Court
to get her out of prison. And then the pictures
say one thing, but Benjamin Nett and Yahoo says another,
and Trump now says Bibe is wrong to deny claims
of starvation in Gaza, and.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
The Trump imposed deadline for Putin to agree to a
cease fire was just moved up. We'll get into.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
That, all right, But we do begin our run in
New York City, where that gut casually walked into a
Manhattan skyscraper yesterday and immediately opened fire in the lobby,
killing four people, including an NYPD officer.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
It really is an eerie image they have of him
literally walking with this weapon and playing view casually on
the streets of New York. This happened at one of
the busiest times of day in one of the busiest
parts of New York Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, around
rush hour. This is when people are pouring out of
the city skyscrapers and making their way home. Police say
was around six thirty pm last night. The gunman carrying
(03:33):
an assault style rifle entered the building at three forty
five Park Avenue, that's the address, and he immediately fired
on a police officer who was in the lobby, and
as they put it, he then sprayed the lobby with gunfire.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
He then went to the elevator where a woman was
heading to the thirty third floor, and he, for whatever reason,
allowed her to get off unharmed. He then proceeded to
the thirty third floor, where he continued shooting before turning
the gun on himself. Acording to police. Now here's what
we know about the shooter. He's been identified as twenty
seven year old Shane Devon Tomora from Las Vegas, and.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
Police say he drove cross country from Vegas to New
York in recent days and that he had a documented
history of mental illness. We also know that he was
legally licensed to carry a concealed weapon by the state
of Nevada. He did have a license to do so. Robes,
I think you saw as well the rules they have
out there. As long as you don't have you hadn't
(04:28):
been in a mental health facility I think in the
past five years. No criminal record, no convictions and all,
and he was allowed to get it, so he was
legally able to carry a concealed weapon. He did have,
according to police, a suicide note in his pocket that
asked that his brain and be studied and suggested that
he had CTE, the brain disorder often associated with football players.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
Police say the note and the other items found in
the shooter's car suggest he did have a grievance with
the NFL over its handling of players with brain injuries.
The NFL's corp offices are in that same Park Avenue
building where he opened fire, but they were not on
the floor where he actually went. The league issued a
statement confirming one of its employees was injured in the attack,
(05:11):
saying he is in stable condition at the hospital.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
And police also identify the officer killed as Ditteral Islam,
thirty six years old, an immigrant from Bangladesh who had
been with the NYPD for about three and a half years.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
He was actually off duty from the forest at the
time of the shooting, but he was there working security
for the building. Officer Islam is married with two small children,
and this is just so sad. He does have one
on the way as well. But so many condolences offered
it to that officer and the others who were killed
in this just senseless shooting.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
This is such a solemn time with all that happens
in the city. You see a lot of folks do
come together, and it's just when they lose one of
their own here at NYPD, it is it is really
a chilling reminder of their work but also their brotherhood
in a lot of ways at how they come together.
This is horrible for the city and a lot of
tourists come to this area. I was trying to give
the best perspective I have this right. This was fifty
(06:07):
second and Park, so two blocks west puts you right
at Saint Patrick's Cathedral sax Roca Co cent So this
is right in the heart of this city. So even
if you don't live here, you know this area.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Yeah, that becomes just so scary and so busy and
so populated, and right that time of night it is
just teeming with folks, tourists and business people all alike.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
All right, folks, we're going to continue on our run
here on this morning now. And a gunman opened fire
at a casino in Reno yesterday as well, this time
killing three people, injured three others. This was at the
Grand Sierra Resort, the largest venue in that area. This
happened early Monday morning.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
Please say, the suspect approached the valet area, pulled out
a handgun and pointed it at a group of people,
but the gun malfunctioned initially. He was though able to
get it to fire quickly and before fleeing on foot
and exchanging gunfire with a security guard as well.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
Yeah, police arrested arrived rather soon after and engaged with police,
shooting him taking him into cust Did they Police say
they don't know a motive for any connection to the
gunman that the casino had. Was he staying there? Did
he know anybody?
Speaker 1 (07:16):
That?
Speaker 2 (07:16):
They just don't know. Two victims are now in critical
condition as of last night. Another victim was treated and released.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
And next up on the run. We are now in
the fourth day of the manhunt for a double murderer
in Arkansas. Police yesterday released a composite sketch of the
man they believe killed two parents on a hike with
their young children. It happened on Saturday at Devil's Den
Park in northwest Arkansas. Clinton. David Brink and Amanda Brink
were found dead on a walking trail after their seven
(07:44):
and nine year old daughters returned to the visitors center
looking for help. Thankfully, the kids were unharmed, and police
are continuing to ask for the public's help. In addition
to the composite sketch, they've pled with people who were
in the area in recent days to please check your
phones see if you've possibly captured an image of the
suspect or anything suspicious. And right now, as this manhunt
(08:06):
is underway, the park and all of its trails remain
closed to the public.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
Yeah, I continue on the run now. Just days now
after Gallane, Maxwell spent nine hours with Deputy Attorney General
Todd Blanche and, according to her attorney, answered all of
his questions about one hundred different people. Maxwell now has
a question of her home to the Supreme Court, will
you get me out of here? She is asking the
court to hear the appeal of her twenty twenty one
(08:31):
sex trafficking conviction because the government has a quote obligation
to honor a non prosecution agreement with Jeffrey Epstein that
also shielded her from criminal charges.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
Federal prosecutors have argued that the agreement only applies in Florida,
not in New York. Maxwell's attorney said, quote, no one
is above the law, not even the Southern District of
New York. Our government made a deal and it must
honor it. The United States cannot promise immunity with one
hand in fl Florida and prosecute with the other in
New York.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
Now. He went on to say, they are appealing not
only to the Supreme Court, but to President Trump himself
to recognize how profoundly unjust it is to scapegoat Gallaine
Maxwell for Epstein's crimes. The Justice Department has asked Supreme
Court to reject Maxwell's petition. Well.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
Next up on the run, we head to Scotland, where
President Trump could not escape more questions about Glaine Maxwell
and Jeffrey Epstein and offered his most extensive answers about both. First,
Trump was questioned by reporters whether he would ever consider
pardoning Maxwell.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
He repeated an earlier statement that he was allowed to
do so, but said, I'm allowed to give an apartment
a part a pardon, but nobody's approached me with it.
Nobody's asked me about it. It's in the news about it,
but that aspect of it. But right now it would
be inappropriate to talk about it. He went on and
was asked whether Attorney General Pine Bondi told him his
name was in the Epstein files. He said, I haven't
(09:55):
been overly interested in it. It's a hoax that's been
built up way beyond proportion.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
He hasn't been overly interested in it. That's funny, all right.
He then went on to point the finger at Joe Biden,
former FBI Director James Comy, and former Attorney General Merrick Garland,
saying I can say this, those files were run by
the worst scum on earth. They were run by Comy,
they were run by Garland, they were run by Biden
and all of the people that actually ran the government,
including the Auto pen. Those files were run for four
(10:22):
years by those people. If they had anything on him,
I assumed they would have released it.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
They also said he would never or he never had
the privilege of going to Jeffrey Epstein's island, saying, in
one of his good moments, he turned down the offer.
Trump went on to explain how his year's long friendship
ended with Epstein, saying I wouldn't talk to him because
he did something that was inappropriate. He stole people that
worked for me. I said, don't ever do that again.
He did it again, and I threw him out of
(10:48):
the place. He was talking about mar A Lago, where
I believe Epstein was supposedly a a member there. But
if folks pointings to this, he keeps changing the story
about what the friendship was and how it ended.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
That's right, he added, a persona non grata talking about Epstein,
all right. Next up on the run, President Trump broke
with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, saying there
is real starvation in Gaza, after net and Yahoo publicly
claimed the exact opposite, Trump saying, some of those kids
are well, that's real starvation stuff. I see it, and
(11:20):
you can't fake that.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Trump said he would said, we would work with our
European allies to set up food centers and distribute more
aid to Gaza. When he was directly asked if he
agreed with Netanyahu's assessment of the situation, Trump said, based
on television, I would say not, particularly because those children
look very hungry, hungry.
Speaker 1 (11:39):
Last week, Britain, Germany, and France jointly called for an
immediate ceasefire in Gaza, describing the death toll from starvation
as a human catastrophe. According to the World Health Organization,
in the month of July alone, at least sixty three
people have died from malnutrition, including twenty five children.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
All right, continue on the run now, and President Trump
ish shortening is deadline for Russia to agree to a
cease fire with Ukraine. Why shorten it? What's the point
of waiting? According to the President, earlier this month he
gave putin fifty days to come to a ceasefire deal,
but yesterday changed course and said, you've got ten to
twelve days from right now.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
Ten to twelve all right, Well, it essentially moves the
deadline up by a couple of weeks. And President Trump's
reasoning was this quote, there's no reason in waiting. We
just don't see any progress being made. The US has
threatened secondary tariffs, if possibly up to one hundred percent,
on any country that does business with Russia.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
We'll stay with us on this Tuesday Morning run when
we come back. We got an update on coach Prime
out in Colorado. Will he be on the sideline this
upcoming season and if he is, will there also be
a porta potty. Also, we're getting an update on not
just how much walking you need to do, but how
fast you need to walk to maybe put some extra
years on your life. We continue on our Tuesday Morning
(13:05):
run now with Colorado head football coach and NFL Hall
of Famer at Dion Sanders. He revealed yesterday he had
bladder cancer. They had been so much mystery about his
health during this off season. He had alluded to having
a health issue, but remain tight lipped about the details
until now.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
Sporting a good sized cowboy hat, overalls and sunglasses at
a press conference and flanked by his doctors, Coach Prime
explained that a doctor found a tumor on his bladder
during a regular exam. He had surgery to remove his bladder,
and doctor said he is now cured of cancer, and
the doctor made a point to say she does not
(13:43):
use that word cured lightly. Nobody does that when it
comes to cancer.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
Cancer free is what they said, or in remission or
something else. Why would a doctor use that word. I mean,
you must feel really, really confident about it. You must
what went on well, he said, he's lost twenty five
pounds and get this part of it though, as he
did not tell family and friends about the seriousness of
his condition, including his football playing sons Shiloh and Shaduur,
(14:08):
and also didn't tell Travis Hunter, the Heisman Trophy winner.
All three of them played for him at Colorado last year.
But as coach Prime was going through his health struggles, Shaduur, Shiloh,
and Travis were all getting ready for the NFL Draft,
and he said he wanted them focused on the draft.
Speaker 1 (14:26):
That takes a tremendous amount of inner strength to be
able to shield someone not close to you, those folks
so close to him, from something that is so painful.
And I mean it's physical, it's mental, it's spiritual, it's everything.
So I am just I am amazed and impressed when
I hear about folks being able to do that for
(14:48):
the sake of people they love. He said he even
changed his phone number several times in recent months so
he wouldn't have to talk to so many people. I
get that. I'm always entertaining.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
Though.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
Coach Prime of course, made some light if his health
issues with this. He said, I can't pee like I
used to. I depend on depends. I'm making a joke
of it, but it's real. If you see a porta
potty on the sideline, it's real.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
That's good.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
It's good that he can make light of it and
have some fun with it, because that's scary stuff.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
But he was real and he went through hell and
you could tell. But can you imagine the roar when
he's SE's on that sideline for the first game like
this is.
Speaker 1 (15:26):
We're gonna be at one of those games. Man. I
cannot wait to see him in action. Yeah, I think
that's that's it. It's very nice when you get happy endings.
It doesn't always work out that way.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
All right, last leg of our run here now and
we're gonna pick up the pace. Everybody needs to pick
up the face, get there faster. That's always a good
thing when you pick up the pace. But what if
you pick up the pace and I could tell you
it also means you will live longer. Last week, right
here on the Morning Run, we were telling you about
a new study that showed just seven thousand steps a day,
(15:56):
we'll give you the same benefits as walking ten thousand steps.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
How a new study shows that you could get an
even greater health benefit by fast walking just fifteen minutes
a day, just fifteen minutes. In fact, it showed you
could reduce your chance of an early death by twenty percent.
That is significant. Fast walking, they say, includes climbing stairs
or what they call brisk walking. It's the kind of
walking that leaves you slightly out of breath. Basically, you're exercising.
(16:23):
You're not just slow walking or taking your time. You
are exercising, all right.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
So even if you prefer regular walking, even at the
slower pace, the study show that provides a boost to
your cardiovascular health and cognitive abilities and memory. Bottom line,
with all of these, believe them or not, they all
consistently say, just move. We need to all just be moving.
Speaker 1 (16:44):
Yeah, exactly, Any is better than none. And so if
you want to do it quicker, just do it faster.
If you want to do it longer. Take your steps
in all right, on this Tuesday morning, we would like
to leave you as something to think about. It is
our quote of the day today.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
The reason we struggle with in secure is because we
compare our behind the scenes with everybody else's highlight reel.
What year was this?
Speaker 1 (17:07):
Uh? This is recent? This guy, Steve Fertik, is a
pastor or, a New York Times bestselling author. He's kind
of a young, fun pastor. I just found this quote
and thought it was so cool because in the world
of Instagram and social media, it's you start to feel like,
why does everybody else have it figured out? Why is
everybody else's life so perfect? Why is my life so
(17:27):
messed up? And I just thought this quote perfectly, perfectly
hit it right.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
Fact, it's all fake, roll in the same boat, putting
on the best face. They just had to do how
many takes to get one perfect shot to make you
jealous and feel like your life is crap?
Speaker 1 (17:42):
But it does create real feelings of insignificance and insecurity,
and especially in a lot of young folks. And you see,
I mean, if you go look on a subway anywhere,
people are just scrolling, scrolling, scrolling and they're comparing. It's
just a human instinct to compare. Look what they have,
Look where they are, Look what they're wearing, Look how
beautiful they are. It's tough, It really is tough. So
I thank Steve Furtick pastor Steve for this. The reason
(18:06):
we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind
the scenes with everyone else's highlight reel. And with that
we hope you have a wonderful Tuesday, everybody.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
I'm Amy Robot and I'm TJ. Holmes. Till somebody love
them the day folks will run with y'all soon
