Speaker 1 (00:01):
Morning Run with Amy and TJ and iHeartRadio Podcast. Hello everyone,
this is your Morning Run for Thursday, August twenty eighth.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
I'm Amy Robots.

Speaker 3 (00:12):
And I'm TJ Holmes. A day after we were smiling
celebrating Travis Taylor got together. We were so excited about love.
Now Brian and a Maya broke up.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
What are we gonna do? Love is hard.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
Baby is hard, especially after two months of dating. Love
is very hard. Love island group. No, you all might
have seen that news. We'll get into this Brian and
Amaya thing after the Taylor and Travis thing yesterday. Also,
we got a few things to get to. There's a
whole mess at the CDC over the director being fired
but refusing to resign. We got the power ball up
to a billion dollars. There's a big fine for a

(00:46):
tennis superstar who had a meltdown. Trump is solidifying his
control over DC by taking over a train station. And
then we got an update on Russia and Ukraine. But folks,
we want to get to all that, but we really
have to. We didn't want to really delay in getting
to the latest on what happened in Minneapolis and rogues.
We've been and been to the sight of, and we

(01:07):
have all, I guess experienced in some way over the years,
these horrific school shootings. It's hard to imagine after Uvaldi, Newtown,
even Parkland, that there would be a shooting that's more shocking,
not more dead. But this one was more shocking in
how this gunman attacked helpless, praying children. That's a detail

(01:34):
of this one that still elevates this to a way.
This is more unconscionable than a lot of a lot
of shootings we've seen in a lot of ways, it's
hard to you don't rank them once worse than another,
but this is unconscionable.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
It's just the last place that you would expect such
evil violence in a church, in a church where young
children are praying before they go to school. So yes,
we do begin our run in Minnesota on this Thursday.
We don't know a motive in this shocking mass shooting
attack on children at a Catholic school in Minneapolis yesterday.

(02:08):
Two kids were killed, ages eight and ten.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
Another fourteen kids were shot. They range in age from
six to fifteen. Now, those kids, the fourteen who were shot,
are all expected to survive. In fact, we got word
that several of them have overnight at least even got
out of the hospital. But this was unconscionable violence against
helpless children. They were sitting in church pews for a

(02:33):
mass when they became targets for this gunman.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
Yeah, it started around eight thirty yesterday morning, when the
kids from Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis had all gathered
for a back to school mass. The school is about
five miles south of downtown Minneapolis, just to give you
an idea of the location. Now, police say the gunmen
fired through the windows of the church as kids were

(02:56):
just sitting helplessly in church pews. In addition to the
fourteen kids that were shot, three adults in their eighties
were also hit.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
And now police say they did recover a pistol, a rifle,
shotgun at the scene. As of this recording, police had
not released a motive, but they did identify the shooter
as twenty three year old Robin Westman, who died at
the scene of a self inflicted gunshot wound. Now, we
do want to tell you what we do know about
the shooter at this point and why there is already heated,

(03:28):
ugly and even hateful rhetoric surrounding the shooter. Again. The
shooter's name Robin Westman.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
Robin Westman, though was born Robert Westman, and according to
court documents, had applied for a legal name change because
Westman identified as a female and wanted her name to
reflect that identification. Westman has no criminal history, according to police,
but they are looking into online videos and a possible
manifesto posted by Westman just before the shooting.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
And these videos are in incredibly disturbing stuff that included
anti Semitic and anti Christian language. Authorities have not identified
the motive as we mentioned, but Westman did attend the
school Annunciation School for a short time. Mother also worked
there for years as well. The videos robes. I know

(04:19):
you've seen some of the skills. They've taken them down,
but it is horrific stuff that if it was caught
early enough, I think it was posted just hours before
May the day before was clearly saying what they were
about to go do. Wow, Wow, clearly saying what they
were about to go do. Now, the FBI director Cash
Pttel says they are investigating this as domestic terrorism and

(04:41):
as a hate crime.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
Now.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
Patel also identified the shooter as a male saying this
in a tweet. The shooter has been identified as Robin Westman,
a male born as Robert Westman. Patel was feeding into
that narrative that's erupted with renewed hate being directed at
the trans community. And it's the last thing need when
a shooting like this occurs, it is fueled by hate.

(05:04):
To add hate in any way to any group is
so counter productive, and that's a really benign word to use.
It's it's it's not it's just the opposite direction we
need to be headed in.

Speaker 3 (05:17):
This is happening. We beg you all don't feed into it.
But it is an ugly, ugly narrative going on right now,
and some folks who have a problem with the transcommunity
anyway are using this as an excuse to go now,
oh see, I mean you go through what Muslim if
there was one that the whole community, Muslim community get
attacked because one person does something. We get where that
comes from. But this some of the language coming after

(05:40):
this one and coming after this person who did a
horrific thing, And that's not what we're saying, but the entire,
an entire community right now is being attacked by the
actions of this person.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
This is about a mentally disturbed individual, not about a group.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
And this person is the length. I mean, six million
jews wasn't enough. It's something that was written on one
of the guns in the video. This person was not okay,
don't know what was going on and why what's happening
with the language is awful and this we have to
mention this. Well, we always what's the language? They always
use thoughts and prayers? Yes, and a politician there in Minneapolis.

(06:14):
So why we keep saying that we need action? Because
if you say thoughts and prayers, what do you do
when a child is literally playing and a shot is
praying and a.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
Shot who's yeah, exactly, a.

Speaker 3 (06:26):
Child is you know, school shooting is one thing. Church
shooting is one those the worst places you can have shootings. Really,
this was a they were at church at school at
the same time.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
It's horrific, and it comes on the heels of those
fake phone calls, those hoaxes about school and campus shootings.
It's just been on our mind. We've been talking about
how terrible that is to instill that kind of fear,
and then the concern that perhaps if a shooting was
to happen that maybe it wouldn't be taken as seriously
because of these hoax calls and all of these scares.

(06:57):
This as our kids are going back to school and
us parents and the children, everyone is on edge and
this is just such an unfortunate, unfortunate and disturbing trend
that continues.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
Oh more to come on that, many more details to
come on that. We'll keep you posted there, but we
do want to head now for the next leg of
our run to Washington, d C. Where the Trump administration
has fired the director of the CDC after less than
a month on the job. Well why Well, the Department
of Health and Human Service has said that fifty year
old Susan Monares wasn't aligned with President Trump's agenda and

(07:34):
refused to resign, so the White House fired her.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
That's not exactly what manares is lawyers claim. They say
she was fired because she stood up for science. Here's
what her lawyers had to say when CDC Director Susan
Minaras refused to rubber stamp unscientific, reckless directives and fired
dedicated health experts, she chose protecting the public over serving
a political agenda. For that, she has been targeted.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
She's been targeted. But she's going to be a hero
to a lot of folks in the medical community and
a lot of folks looking and saying, this is what
you do. You stand up for what you believe it
if it cost you a job, she is going to
be picked up somewhere.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
To be absolutely working, very absolutely.

Speaker 3 (08:14):
Probably right y. She wasn't the only one departing the agency.
At least four others top CDC officials actually resigned this week.
Moneras was sworn in July thirty. First, she didn't make
it a month? Was that three weeks, making her the
shortest serving director in the history of the CDC.

Speaker 1 (08:32):
My goodness, that's a seventy eight year old agency too,
So yes, she is the shortest serving CDC director, all right.
Next up on the run, President Trump is making another
move to tighten his control over the district of Columbia.
The administration announced yesterday they're taking over Union Station.

Speaker 3 (08:49):
They don't have enough to do at the White House.
We're going to get into train station management. Now. The
mixed use hub Union Station. We've ever been through there.
It houses restaurants, really nice shops. I love the place.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
We love Union Station. It's gorgeous.

Speaker 3 (09:02):
It is, and it's served as a training station where,
of course tens of thousands of passengers passed through every week.
It's normally managed by Amtrak, but Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy
yesterday said the Feds will be taking over management. I
think by next month.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
I thought Republicans were anti big government anyway, just saying
Duffy said, the President wants to make Union Station beautiful
again and wants to make transit safe again. And his words,
Union Station isn't a point of pride anymore. It's fallen
into disrepair. Union Station had been the focus of the
federal government's crackdown on crime in DC, and the National

(09:36):
Guard has certainly kept a noticeable presence there.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
Look, they've had their issues over the year, a bunch
of revitalization efforts, but you walk in there. I have
always that grand Central in New York, just beautiful facilities. Now,
folks will tell you Union Station has had some issues
with crime over the years, and it's a place where
many people who are down on the luck and homeless
will go hang out and use the restroom, try to
find something to eat. Fun. But it is gorgeous. But

(10:01):
the president is really into beautifying DC. He is really
into it right now.

Speaker 1 (10:07):
I mean, okay, let's see what he comes up with
and how much money it's going to come.

Speaker 3 (10:12):
All right, I said overseas now with the Russian President,
Vladimir Putin has responded to the latest calls for a
ceasefire and an end to the war. His response came
in the form of six hundred drones, thirty ballistic missiles,
and fourteen dead in one of the largest and deadliest
attacks on the Ukrainian capital in recent weeks.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
The large scale overnight attack on Kiev was even described
by President Zelenski as a clear response that tells you
where Putin's head is. In Zelenski's words, Putin chooses ballistics
over the negotiating table. Ukraine said at least three children
were killed in this latest attack, which targeted civilians.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
Russia denies targeting civilians.

Speaker 3 (10:52):
And this attack comes after Putin and Trump met face
to face for that much anticipated and a lot of
hope was rioting on that summit in Alaska. Well, there
was hope for that meeting that something was going to
come out of and there was hope after the meeting
that we could have a face to face with Putin
and Zelensky, something that Trump was pushing and maybe maybe
we could get to an end of this three and
a half year war soon. But all that effort seems

(11:15):
to have stalled. Putin never seemed interested in a one
on one with Zelensky. So the missiles keep flying and
people keep.

Speaker 2 (11:23):
Dying, all right.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
Next up on the run, the US Open has fined
former number one ranked player Daniel Medev.

Speaker 3 (11:30):
I never can say his name, Danil Medvedev.

Speaker 1 (11:32):
Medvedev I said it right before we went on.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
I'm like, did I get it right? Oh? My god, Medvedev.

Speaker 1 (11:37):
Anyway, he has been fined forty two thousand, five hundred
dollars for his on court meltdown. This week, Medvedev was
fined thirty thousand dollars for unsportsmanlike conduct and another twelve thousand,
five hundred four racket abuse.

Speaker 3 (11:51):
We have to protect those rackets. Yes, we can't treat
them like this. Ah to tenn star Well, he was
outraged when the umpire allowed his opponent Jim and Bonzi
another serve after a photographer wandered into the court during
their match and they told the photographer to get off
the court. And then announced Bonzi would get another serve
because of the delay. That's what Medvedev had a problem with, right.

Speaker 1 (12:14):
So Medvedev complained and the crowd began to boo and
chant second serve. Medvedev then riled up the crowd, I
think it. The pause then ended up going six minutes
as he was getting the crowd involved, and then he
taunted the umpire, picked up the microphone and said he
wants to go home.

Speaker 2 (12:30):
Guys, he doesn't like to be here.

Speaker 1 (12:31):
He gets paid by the match, not by the hour.

Speaker 2 (12:34):
Woof.

Speaker 1 (12:34):
Medvedev ended up winning that set, but Bonzi wound up
winning the.

Speaker 3 (12:39):
Match, okay, And that's when Medvedev repeatedly pounded his ragget
against the sideline chair destroyed some equipment. Now, Medvedev is
a stud of a player. He won the US Open
back in twenty twenty one. That this was his third
consecutive Grand Slam lost in the first round. However, you
see how he's why he's upset. It was a bit
of a tantrum. I can't remember what if the umpire

(13:01):
was ruled to have ruled officially the right way or not,
but it was an important part of the match and
is so heated with these guys.

Speaker 1 (13:08):
Either way, you can't act like a two year old,
and that is exactly what he did. So I think
they said he lost thirty five percent of his winnings
in the first round.

Speaker 3 (13:17):
Yeah, but what do you do. Everybody has a bad moment.
I want to give him a beat. Everybody has a
bad moment.

Speaker 2 (13:23):
He had a terrible and he's paying the price and
he is all right.

Speaker 3 (13:27):
Well, stay with us, folks on this Thursday morning run
when we come back. We're now getting into billion dollar
territory with the powerball jackpot. This thing is real now.
And oh my goodness, we were all celebrating love yesterday
and then we got a love reality check and apparently
love island. Well the love stays there, it doesn't translate

(13:48):
back to the US.

Speaker 1 (13:57):
Welcome back to your Friday Eve morning run and next
up on the run. This is exciting. It's almost at
a billion dollars. There was no winner in last night's
powerball drawing, and that means the jackpot has now Jack
Pott has now reached nine hundred and fifty million dollars.

Speaker 3 (14:14):
Well, not everybody lost in the drawing yesterday. Some pretty
big payouts six tickets won a million dollars or more
by matching all five white balls. If you match the
five white balls, that means you only missed one number
one powerball away from a billion dollars. Almost so. The
next drawing is on Saturday, Lucky Number. You have the
option of a lump sum of four hundred and twenty

(14:35):
eight point nine million dollars before taxis And if you
win and you're in Florida, Texas or Tennessee, you're gonna
get a bigger price.

Speaker 2 (14:44):
Maybe you should just move before you claim.

Speaker 3 (14:47):
This is the six largest prize in powerball history. The
jackpot has been growing since May thirty first.

Speaker 1 (14:53):
All right, for the final leg of our run. Turns
out the real world is a much tougher place for
love than the villa. It's confirmed. Love Island USA winning
couple Brian and Amaya are no longer an item.

Speaker 3 (15:06):
Tell me how you really feel about it? No seriousness, No,
it is sad.

Speaker 1 (15:09):
You know, we watched the show, we were invested, and
it just seems sad that that quickly things could fall
apart and.

Speaker 3 (15:18):
Two months, right, it's only been two months as they left.

Speaker 1 (15:20):
The who oh, correct, Yes, it's not been long at
all now.

Speaker 3 (15:23):
Amaya of Brian and Amaiah confirmed what had been speculated
that the two had broken up after they each unfollowed
one another, just hours before the airing of this week's
season seven reunion special. On the special, it was taped
a few weeks prior, the two played off cheating rumors
and appear to steal be together and going strong, and

(15:44):
then on Wednesday, Amya confirmed the break up on her
Instagram story.

Speaker 2 (15:48):
Here's what she wrote.

Speaker 1 (15:49):
My papayas, she's known as Amaya Papaya, so all of
her fans are called papayas all right, So my papayas,
Brian and I are no longer together. After leaving the villa,
it became very clear that we were on two different journeys.
Our visions didn't align, and relationships are supposed to be
a team sport. You don't have to drink the whole

(16:10):
seed to know it's salty. All love here and I
truly wish him the best, Amaya Papaya, I.

Speaker 2 (16:16):
Don't really know what that means.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
It means she knew pretty quickly that he wasn't for her,
so and it also sounds like they were on the
outs pretty quickly after leaving the villa.

Speaker 3 (16:25):
By that, I think the whole sea to know it's salty.

Speaker 1 (16:27):
Meaning she didn't need to stay with him any longer
to find out that he wasn't for her.

Speaker 3 (16:30):
She just needed a sample.

Speaker 2 (16:33):
I think that's how I'm reading it.

Speaker 1 (16:35):
But you know she's not the only one talking, because Brian,
a few hours after Amaya posted this, posted his own statement.

Speaker 3 (16:42):
All Right, what you got, Brian, here we go, He says,
as many of you already know, Amaya and I have
decided to go our separate ways. Unfortunately we were not
on the same page, and that is okay. We have
both gained clarity that we are on different paths right now,
I am thankful for the time we have spent together,
and I wish her nothing but the best moving forward.
Nice enough, Sure, what's with the black heart? He put
a black heart?

Speaker 2 (17:02):
A black heart? I don't know why, just a powerful heart.
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (17:07):
I see purple heart sometimes that mean something, brave, the
purple heart on the when you do it on the
people do that for bravery.

Speaker 2 (17:15):
Yeah, I would think, so.

Speaker 3 (17:17):
That makes sense. Would you just say it makes sense?
But the black heart, then that's got to mean something.

Speaker 1 (17:22):
Maybe he didn't want it to mean anything more that
you're reading into it.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
But okay, I have a black and cold, hard heart.
I don't think he meant that, But.

Speaker 3 (17:28):
Why would you not put a red heart?

Speaker 2 (17:30):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (17:31):
It was a choice, all right. Amaya then hinted that
Brian was the one who ended things when she left
a comment on someone else's TikTok calling out Brian for
flirting with other women.

Speaker 1 (17:42):
So this is what Amaya left in the comment section
of another girl's video. Imagine being broken up with just
to come on TikTok a couple of hours later, already
in distraught.

Speaker 2 (17:51):
But I think she meant distress to.

Speaker 1 (17:53):
See that he's in Miami two hours later doing the
exact things she told him.

Speaker 2 (17:57):
Hurt your feelings.

Speaker 1 (17:58):
She then reposted a videos saying she was so glad
that Brian's true colors are showing now. I hope this
doesn't get ugly out.

Speaker 3 (18:06):
Of my mouth the line I was about to say,
this is going to get uglier.

Speaker 1 (18:11):
Right because once people start throwing shade and they're trying
to protect their online personalities and what people think of them,
because this is now how they make money, They've now
all become.

Speaker 2 (18:22):
These huge stars.

Speaker 1 (18:23):
This was a huge success for Peacock Love Island USA
season seven, their biggest to date. So these are all
big potential stars in the making. They all want brand deals.
They all want to be liked and revered by their
fans and by the American public. So now someone says
someone did something or did them wrong, you gotta defend, deflect,
and protect.

Speaker 2 (18:43):
So this attack and you're right, well I left that
one out. Yikes.

Speaker 3 (18:48):
I think this is nothing else, just a lesson if
everybody wants to take. We've talked about this plenty on
Love Island. And yes, it looks great, it looks fun,
it looks happy, and everybody's in love and you have
this feeling. But after two months, you just don't know
someone enough that you have a foundation to trust them
when they mess up. He might be a great guy
who made a mistake. If they had three years in
and some of the stuff happened, she would know. I

(19:08):
got a foundation, I know who he is. Now it's like,
the hell with you? And this is what relationships are.
They just are you cannot you don't know.

Speaker 2 (19:15):
After two months, you don't you can't know. Some people
get lucky, some people.

Speaker 3 (19:20):
Get on like he is still learning after two months,
three years, we're.

Speaker 2 (19:23):
Still learning exactly. Oh my goodness.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
Yes, all right, Well, on this Thursday, we would like
to leave you with this. This is our quote of
the day for you. The new dawn blooms as we
free it. For there is always light, if only we're
brave enough to see it, if only we're brave enough
to be it. That was from Amanda Gorman. Of course,
she was our poet laureate correct And I just thought

(19:48):
it was so beautiful and I loved the message and
I liked it it rhymed.

Speaker 3 (19:52):
I love Amanda. We had her on GMA three one
and she wrote something specifically for us and presented it
that day. She's just obviously talented, wildly talented, just a
beautiful soul of a young lady. But I had obviously
I hadn't heard this. Where'd you find this?

Speaker 1 (20:05):
I just, you know, I go through the internet look
for powerful quotes. I try sometimes I look up people
who I respect and admire and see if they have
something they like. And this one popped out and I
just thought it was beautiful and thought provoking.

Speaker 3 (20:17):
There is always light if we're brave enough to be it.
That's I'm kind of amending it, and that's the part
I'm going to put in my pocket for today. Yeah,
that's just brave enough. Sometimes we're always what's the other lines?
Sometimes we're always looking for looking around for somebody to
be the light. When it's you, you have to do it.
So it's a great thank you for reminding me of Amanda.

Speaker 2 (20:35):
Yeah, she's an awesome person.

Speaker 1 (20:37):
And with this dark day in news and just hearing
some of these headlines, especially what's happening out of Minneapolis
and throughout the college campuses, just fear and pain and darkness,
and so I just thought to remind everyone we have
that power to be that light. And Amanda just said
it so beautifully. I'll read it one more time. I
can't read it as well as she does, though. I
love her presentation of her works too. She's just a beautiful.

Speaker 2 (21:00):
Woman inside and out.

Speaker 1 (21:02):
The new dawn blooms as we free it, for there
is always light, if only we're brave enough to see it,
if only we're brave enough to be it.

Speaker 2 (21:13):
Thank you, Amanda.

Speaker 1 (21:14):
Gorman, and thank you for running with us everyone.

Speaker 3 (21:16):
I'm a me roboch and I'm TJ. Holmes appreciate you
always running with us, and please be kind to somebody
today who's not even expecting it.
