Speaker 1 (00:01):
Morning Run with Amy and TJ and iHeartRadio Podcast. Good
morning everyone, It's Monday, March twenty fourth. Welcome to your
Morning Run.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
I'm Amy Roeboch and i am TJ.
Speaker 1 (00:12):
Holmes.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
We're gonna get going this morning on this Monday morning
with incredible news from the Vatican. Go ahead, call it
a miracle. Our first sighting of Pope Francis as he's
released from the hospital.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
And is really ours. Airstrikes target the largest hospital in Gaza,
as the death toll there now reaches a staggering new milestone.
Plus former Congresswoman Mia Love, the first Black Republican woman
elected to Congress, passed away on Sunday, but not before
leaving behind a message for us all.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Also on the run this morning, a United Airlines flight
on its way to Shanghai had to be diverted midair.
But the reason why is gonna surprise you and it
might even infuriate you as a fellow traveler.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
Plus Dolly Parton finally makes it to number one. That's right,
it's the first time the country music legend made the
top of one Billboard chart in her decades long career.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Ah So this morning Tiger Woods makes it official. He's
with the Trump family. Well, he's with Trump's former daughter
in law and mother to five of his grandkids, Vanessa Trump.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
Not the blockbuster weekend snow White might have been hoping for,
but some may even call it a sleepy start.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
And March Madness is underway, and we just saw our
first legit Buzzer beat her. Also one conference set a
record for the sweet sixteen. We'll get into all that.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
Oh, can't wait to get into all of that. That
was quite the excitement over the weekend. With your razorbacks,
we begin our run though this morning in Rome, a
day many thought would never come. Eighty eight year old
Pope Frances back at his residence in the Vatican after
finally being discharged from the hospital after a five weeks
stay battling double pneumonia.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
Now on Sunday, before leaving the hospital, the Pope made
an appearance from the balcony of his room, where he
waved to hundreds of people who were gathered below. He
was visibly weak, of course, he had some bandages that
were visible, but he was able to say a few
words and even thank to women in the crowd who
had come to visit the hospital each day with yellow roses.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
This was the first time the Pope had been seen
in real life since he was admitted to the hospital
on February fourteenth. The Vatican, you may remember, release that
photo from behind last week, trying to quell rumors that
some had said he had already passed. That photo did
very little to stop the conspiracy theories. But turns out
the Pope was still alive, in fact to doing much better.
(02:33):
As we were hearing from the Vatican, the Pope went
from the hospital to take flowers to the Basilica of
Saint Mary Major. That's a church the Pope had visited
frequently before he headed back to his residence.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
Doctor say the Pope will need two months of rest,
that the Vatican should avoid stressful meetings with large groups.
They say all should should avoid groups with small children,
trying to minimize the potential for further infections.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
All right, Next up on the run, we're going to
turn to the Middle East, where doctors say the Israel
Hamas war has reached a devastating milestone. Fifty thousand Palestinians
have been killed since the conflict began nearly a year
and a half ago.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Meanwhile, Israel has kept up its promise new assault on
Hamas since breaking the ceasefire a week ago. Sunday, there
were multiple casualties reported after an Israeli airstrike hit the
largest hospital operating in Gaza. Israel claims a Hamas military
leader was there using the hospital. He was reportedly there
getting treatment for injury suffered in a previous airstrike.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Next up on the run, former Congresswoman Mia Love has
passed away at the age of forty nine after a
fight with brain cancer. Love notably was the first Black
Republican woman ever elected to Congress.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
She had spoken publicly about undergoing treatment for brain cancer,
and earlier this month wrote in an op ed that
she was no longer responding to that treatment, saying, quote,
my battle with brain cancer is coming to an end.
My family and I have shifted our focus from treatments
to enjoying every moment and making memories with the time
we have. Her family says she died peacefully at her
(04:07):
home and sarah Toga Springs, Utah. That's the same town
where she launched her political career.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
Yeah. Love was first a member of the city council
before becoming mayor, and then she won a seat in
Congress in twenty fourteen, and we want to share with
you a couple of lines from the op ed that
she penned earlier this month before her death.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
And this struck us because literally this morning getting up
and reading the words of not just of a woman
who has died, but also she wrote them knowing she
was a dying woman. So some of the words just
kind of jump out at you. There's one thing, she said,
quote couching this column as a dying wish felt a
little dramatic, even for a drama person like me. I
(04:47):
write all this as my living wish and hopefully enduring
wish for you. She went on to talk about what
the country had meant for her. Her parents were immigrants.
She said, quote, some have forgotten the math America. Whenever
you divide, you diminish. What I know is that goodness
and compassion of the American people is a multiplier that
(05:07):
simply cannot be measured. Again, Robes, I didn't expect this
morning for this one the jump out at me. But
it's I'm going to encourage people to go look it
up and go read it. But she wrote it, I
believed just two to three weeks ago, and it was
published online. It's just great and encouraging words from a
woman who knew it was the end for us.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
Yeah. I get choked out thinking about it. When you
read her words, it really is inspiring on this Monday
that she was able to write about love and compassion,
all the things that suddenly matter. I mean, they all
matter to us, but when you know that your life
is coming to an end, and not a lot of
people have that knowledge, but when you do, you live differently.
And her words of wisdom are so meaningful and so powerful,
(05:49):
because yes, all the noise, all the things we fight
about and worry about and talk about and waste our
time about, really all don't matter in the end. When
you're dying, you know that. So yes, what she wrote
is powerful, and we encourage everyone to read it. It
says the title of the op ed is mea love,
my living wish for the America I know all right.
(06:13):
Next up on the Run, a United Airlines plane flying
from Los Angeles to Shanghai had to make a mid
air diversion over the weekend. Not because of a mechanical issue,
not because of a weather issue, not even because of
an unruly passenger.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
It was because of an absent minded pilot. The pilot
mid flight two hours into this thing, it says, he
suddenly realized he had forgotten his passport, which apparently is
important if you're flying to Shanghai. United flight one ninety eight.
It had been up in the air a couple hours.
Pilot had to make a U turn fly to San
Francisco to land the plane. The airline had to find
(06:50):
a new pilot. The passengers got this message, your flight
diverted to San Francisco due to an unexpected crew related issue,
requiring a new crew. Once they arrived, we'll get once
they arrived, we'll get you back on your way to
Shanghai as soon as possible. We sincerely apologize for this
disruption and appreciate your patience.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
So what did the passengers get for this pretty major diversion, Well,
they were given a fifteen dollars meal voucher. Some of
the passengers definitely took social media very upset about this.
When they found out that it in fact was due
to not just a crew issue, but because the pilot
forgot his passport. They are demanding some bigger compensation. We'll
(07:30):
fight out if that actually takes place, but eventually we
should point out United found another crew, passengers did make
it to Shanghai, and despite this major snafu, it's kind
of remarkable they landed just six hours behind schedule. That
is a big deal. So I'm not trying to minimize
the fact that a six hour delay causes a lot
of disruptions for a lot of folks, but given what
they were dealing with. In fact, after making the U turn,
(07:53):
I believe the flight was in the air for almost
three full hours before it landed and then had to
start over again in San Francisco. But a little frustrating
knowing that this is the second time in one week
this happened to you, United pilot. Apparently this was the
exact same situation a few days earlier. The good news
is the pilot realized it before he got on the plane,
(08:14):
so they were able to make the delay much less.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Don't give them anything. It's offensive to give them the
fifteen dollars. Just don't give him anything. That's a middle
finger to the passengers. Correct, just don't give anything, and
that's you can be upset about that, but don't offend
them by giving them a fifteen dollars voucher. Come on,
that's Cava learned. You gotta do better. You know, this
is going to get out, and so that's off. That's
it is. That's okay. And the pilot, for God's sake,
(08:37):
that's the last thing you wanted an absent minded pilot gigs.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
Yeah, if he forgot his his passport, what else did
he forget? I mean, that's a little concerning. Also, there
has been a lot of talk about why they don't
have the same exact protocol for the crew that they
do for passengers. You should have to scan your passport
before you go onto the plane. That would eliminate No,
apparently that's not I mean that's not the case, because
(09:00):
it's happened twice in one week now.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
Everybody's bordered a plane. The cockpit doors open. Now we
all got to dip our head, and everybody got the
passport before we take off. We'll continue here on our
run this morning with Dolly Parton, and it's a sentimental
first for the legend on her of course, long storied
and record setting career. She's actually never made it to
number one on a particular country chart until now.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
That's right, Dolly's song if you hadn't been there has
hit number one on Billboard's Country Digital Chart that is
a measure of the best selling country songs each week
based purely on online purchases. Dolly, of course, has had
plenty of hits over the years. She's even had songs
on this particular chart before, but never number one.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
But here's a little bit of the twist here. Why
this is happening this particular chart, it's only been around
the past twenty years or so. That is after her
most legendary hits had already had their run. They've run
their course, so Jelen, all those we had already had
their time. So this song, now, if you hadn't been
there is a dedication to her husband, Carl Thomas Dean,
(10:08):
who died at the age of eighty two earlier this month.
They had been married some fifty years. And it's I mean,
it's sweet, bittersweet, but to see her at number one
is just cool. And to think it was her husband
in that song that.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
Oh no cool, It gives me Chillsen. I haven't heard
it yet, And as soon as we're done with this podcast,
I am going to listen to that song. I can't wait.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
All right, we'll stay with us folks here on this
Monday morning run. When we come back, Tiger's got a girlfriend. Also,
snow White has got a problem, and we have got
a buzzer beer.
Speaker 1 (10:49):
Welcome back to your Monday morning run and next up
on the run. You know, we don't do a lot
of celebrity dating news here, but you know what, this
one was a doozy. The most famous golfer in the
world is officially dating the former daughter in law of
the current president of the United States.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
Give you a second to put all that together. But
if you didn't catch it, what we're saying is Tiger
was is dating Butanessa Trump. Yes, it was Tiger, famously
private Tiger who actually made this official on social media.
He posted two photos of them, one of them standing
and posing just next to each other, and then the
other they're actually laying in a hammock together smiling. I
(11:27):
think she's kind of more so laying on top of him,
but the very chill, relaxed Tiger woods.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
Yeah, I mean that was great. I couldn't wait to
look at the pictures when I saw all of that.
Tiger wrote this in the caption love is in the Air. Wow.
Quite the romantic and life is better with you by
my side. We look forward to our journey through life together. Wow,
that sounds like it's a permanent thing. I love that
he added at this time, we'd like privacy for all
(11:53):
those close to our hearts. Good luck with that Tiger, Well.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
Yeah, I mean he's making a nod. So yes, we're here,
we're out here, but please don't mess with our kids.
And it's a lot of kids in this group. Vanessa
was previously married to Donald Trump Junior and they have
five kids together now, Vanessa's kids and Tiger's kids. Some
of them go through the same school together. Vanessa and
Tiger have been seen in recent weeks, so not necessarily
(12:19):
that this came out of nowhere, but it's cool to
see him happy. He's famously a private guy, but he
put this out there, and he looks happy. We've seen
him in some of his golf tournament, the virtual tournament
that's been on ESPN having a blast.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
Dude looks happy, Yeah, he does, and in the hammock
he has the sweetest little smile on his face. I
was thinking about this because we've seen a lot of
Trump's granddaughter Kai. You know, she's just this gorgeous girl.
She is a big golfer, and I just wonder if
that is a nice little tie between them. She's doing
well on the greens as well, so it's probably pretty
(12:54):
cool to have her mom dating Tiger. Probably doesn't hurt,
all right. Next up on our run, much maligned, much
talked about, much anticipated Snow White finally arrived in theaters
this weekend. How to do with the box office after
all those controversies. Well, it didn't totally bomb.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
It's probably not what they wanted to wake up to
this morning. That line, it didn't totally bomb. The Disney
live action reimagining of the beloved classic made and estimated
forty three million dollars at the US box office, making
it the number one movie of the weekend. That number
was also good enough to make it the second biggest
movie opening of the year. All that sounds great, It's problem.
(13:37):
Movie costs are reported two hundred and fifty plus million
to make, and that's before promotional costs, which on a
movie like this can reach up into the eight plus figures.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
Wow, all right, Well, okay, so forty three million dollars
is not a great start. You could also argue that
it's quite concerning the movies Rotten Tomatoes score, and you know,
so many people check this, at least, you know, I
always do. Is it forty four percent? That is no good?
But we did notice the audience score is seventy four percent,
(14:09):
So you'll see the two side by side. And I
always kind of gauge that too, because if the people
who went to go see it liked it, I almost
take that as a bigger barometer of what my movie
experience will be like versus the critics, because sometimes they're
looking for artistic things or just I don't know parts
of the movie that I'm not necessarily that concerned with.
So you know, that's a good thing. That's maybe some
(14:32):
silver lining there. The movie, though very much, seemed like
it was cursed from the beginning.
Speaker 2 (14:36):
Yeah, and from the very beginning. You'll remember, there was
a backlash when it was announced that a non white
actress would be taking the lead role. There were several
delays and reshoots because of COVID. All that added up,
and then there were the controversies scal Goadotes' comments about
the war between Israel and Hamas, star Rachel Zegler's comments
about Trump and his supporters, and her comments about Disney's
(14:57):
original snow White. Also, Disney chose to go with cgi
of the Seven Doors. They decided to see gi them
instead of using actual real actors. So all that adds
up to just it hasn't been anything positive for a
long time for this movie. It just seemed doomed yea
from the very beginning. And it's just such a beloved
(15:17):
I know snow White has its issues, the original from
nineteen thirty seven, a lot of issues back then, fine,
but it's still just this classic that I guess we
all grew up with. We should have a sweet place
in our heart when we think about it instead of
this has tainted the whole damn snow White legacy for me.
Speaker 1 (15:33):
Now, it's remarkable that they managed to piss off so
many different people who would have otherwise probably gone to
see this movie happily, and to well potentially piss off
half the country with the Trump comments. And then you've
got so many divisions between Israel and Palestine. I mean
it just, yeah, that's tough.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
Well know, later, we actually do have tickets and have
plans to go see the movie today and going to
give an actual review, not just talk about controvert, but
actually talk about the movie, So hopefully we'll make it.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
Excited about this because we've been watching in the background
and at nauseum the original Snow Idea. It's been playing
in our home all weekend long, so this will be
I'm really looking forward to the movie and really looking
forward to doing the podcast. Now, speaking of looking forward
to something, TJ had quite the weekend. For the final
(16:25):
leg of the run, we're gonna talk March Madness. We'll
begin with the latest. We got our first legit buzzer
beater of the NCAA Tournament last night and it was
a freshman that delivered.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
This was a cool scene with twelve seed Colorado State
up against four seed Maryland. Colorado State hits a three
pointer with three point seven seconds to go, put them
up by one point. You think that's the game winner
because it's only seconds left. A big upset was brewing
with the twelve seed Colorado State over four seed Maryland. However,
Maryland calls time out. The coach later told the media
(16:55):
that in that time out, in the huddle, he asked
his players who wants to take the last shot, and
freshman Derek Queen responded immediately, quote, give me the mother
effen ball.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
Gotta love that confidence. Maryland inbounded to the six to
ten center who took the ball on the left side
of the basket and shot a running fadeaway that banked
off the backboard and went in as the buzzer sounded.
I wrote all of that. This game winner put Maryland
into the Sweet sixteen. Seven out of the sixteen teams
are from the same conference, the SEC.
Speaker 2 (17:30):
Yeah, and that is a record for one conference. They
got seven teams left out of the sixteen. That's a
big deal, but it's actually not maybe that big of
a surprise. The SEC had a dominant year and got
fourteen teams into the tournament. That was also a record.
So moving forward, you have all four number one seeds
have made it to the next round. All four number
(17:52):
two seeds made it except one that two seed with
Saint John's that went down losing to the up and
coming lowly Arkansas Razorbacks. And there has been of a
coach that John Calipari. If you don't know, I am
being absolutely sarcastic. These are This was the highlight of
my weekend to see coach cal and my Alma mon
(18:12):
Or do its thing. So it was really really fun.
Speaker 1 (18:14):
It was the highlight of my weekend watching you just celebrate.
You know, this has been fun because especially when you
have been obviously a tried and true hog span through
thick and thin, so when you've gone and supported them
through all the defeats, when you get that victory and
an upset like it was, it's just that much sweeter.
(18:34):
So that was so fun to watch your hogs get
into the sweet sixteen. And I also was kidding when
I said I wrote that. Obviously that would never have
come from my brain onto paper.
Speaker 2 (18:44):
Nobody listening thought for a second you were serious. We'll
update you though, I'll allow you fill out your brackets.
ESPN Tournament Challenge. We gave an update I think last
week a couple of times about how many perfect brackets
were left. So twenty four million, three hundred eighty eight thousand,
five hundred and forty four brackets were submitted at one
point last week after the first day, I think it
(19:06):
was down only twenty thousand or so.
Speaker 1 (19:07):
That was still perfect less than one percent.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
Yes, so how many still perfect after the first weekend?
Out of that twenty four million, zero there's not a
single perfect bracket left this always happened. I swear usually
one or two. There's usually a weekend a couple.
Speaker 1 (19:23):
But was it after Arkansas's win that they were all
zeroed out?
Speaker 2 (19:27):
There was Clemson that did. Louisville was a big pick
and Clemson lost the five seeds loss right, they crushed
a lot of people. But yes, there is not a
single perfect bracket. Let's just let you know you cannot
predict this thing. It's the only thing that delivers every
single year.
Speaker 1 (19:41):
And it's worth all those sleepless nights, ain't it, TJ.
Speaker 2 (19:44):
Damn right? It is so, folks. Before we let you
go about your day on this Monday, something we'd like
for you to consider. It is our quote of the day.
Speaker 1 (19:52):
TJ. One of our discussions over the weekend inspired me
to find this quote from a book I love. Here
we go, b impecc with your word. Speak with integrity,
Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to
speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the
power of your word in the direction of truth and love.
(20:15):
That is from Don Miguel Ruiz Ruiz, author of The
Four Agreements. It's a book I read a long long
time ago, and when I saw this quote. It reminded
me that I would like to re listen to this
book on an audiobook. But it's a great quote.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
Folks. We will do another episode of our regular Amyen
DJ podcast to explain why that quote jumped out at
her and she was looking for based on a discussion
we were having this weekend. No, it wasn't an argument, right, No, it.
Speaker 1 (20:45):
Could a common argument, but we've gotten to a place
in our relationship where we can just accept each other's
comments and not be personally offended by them. All right,
So one more time for everybody, because this is actually
it's a great way to start your week and a
great way to start your Monday. About being an intentional
(21:05):
person with what you say. Here we go, be impeccable
with your word. Speak with integrity, say only what you mean,
Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to
gossip about others. Use the power of your word in
the direction of truth and love. And with that, thank
(21:25):
you for running with us on this Monday.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
I made read and I'm TJ. Holmes. Folks, We'll see
you on the run of mont
