Speaker 1 (00:01):
Morning Run with Amy and TJ and iHeartRadio Podcast. Welcome
everyone to Morning Run, but a little afternoon edition for some.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
It'll still be morning for others.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
But it's Friday, January second. We all had a crazy
New Years so yeah, a little later start, but wanted
to make sure we hit you with some headlines today.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
I'm Amy Roboch and I'm TJ Holmes. Yes, just wanted
to get on record with a few things here. I
had a couple of pretty significant updates on a number
of stories, ranging from a breaking news story, tragedy to
even some pretty big entertainment headlines that we'll get into.
But yeah, I just wanted to say, I guess this
is our first run of twenty twenty six, so wow,
(00:43):
this is how we're starting. Late, Late and lazy is
how it's going. But we will pick it up throughout
the year, we promised, But let's start robes. I just
made a lot of headlines. Of course, a lot of
us were doing this. We were at New Year's Eve
celebrations and folks, if you haven't seen the news out
of Switzerland, there was a ski resort fire that happened, yes,
(01:03):
during a New Year's Eve party and we've gotten word
ropes that the death toll is up to forty, but
also getting worried about how they think this thing started.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
It is, Oh my goodness, this is just a devastating story.
Forty people, yes, dead, but another one hundred and nineteen
injured and some are still missing. So they expect those
numbers to go up. But right now, the biggest new
information is they believe sparklers in champagne bottles started this fire.
There was actually a report of a bartender having another
(01:35):
bartender on his shoulders and she had a tray of
these champagne bottles.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
I have sparklers.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Yeah, I got there and this got too close to
the roof.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Basically, these are old buildings and it was a wooden
ceiling and it just ignited. And that is just so
scary and sad to think about.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
And of course we've all seen. We may have you
been outday, we've all seen. But if you've done any
clubbing in your life, you see that plenty of times
at they walk around with those bottles. That's exactly something
that small, that simple, ends up setting off a tragedy
of this nature. But yes, to your point, no one
should have been that close it's only because they were
(02:13):
stacked on top of each other that the bottles got
that high.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
Ah.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
And right now they're in the just horrific process of
trying to identify the victims because, as you can imagine,
they say, the fire spread so quickly, and of course
there was a mad dash to try and get through
apparently some narrow stairs to try and get out this door.
But so many people were trapped, and now they're having
to go through dental records to try and find out
who was in there.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
But these were a lot of young.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
Kids, like eighteen, nineteen twenty. This is just devastating to
a lot of parents out there just trying to get
some answers.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
Hey, you made that point about the everybody trying to escape.
There was a fire escape, but everybody was trying to
go out the same entrance that they entered the building.
And I mean, what do you do in that emergency
to imagine but a awful happening there. Also, it's times
another story here that maybe there's a threat of war
by the US against Iran and it came to us
(03:07):
via what else, social media. This is of course making
headlines because of what the president, President Trump did message
overnight last night.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
Yes, he took to truth social as he tends to do,
and this was his post. If Iran shoots and violently
kills peaceful protesters, which is their custom, the United States
of America will come to their rescue. We are locked
and loaded and ready to go. Thank you for your
attention to this matter, President Donald J.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
Trump. And then we have Iranian officials taking.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
To Twitter basically reacting to that threat, threatening US, just like.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
A Twitter battle right between leaders of world powers. But yes,
the protests have been going on at least a week.
They are renewed protests usually about the same stuff, anti
government protests and crackdowns. But the President put this out.
It was at a weird hour. I think it was
overnight sometime. But I need to let you know about that.
(04:05):
I need to head out to Colorado and Robes. I
believe if you helped me, if you saw the right year.
But this is the first suspected mountain lion death since
nineteen ninety nine, that's correct, So it's been a long time,
so of course this is going to make headlines.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
Yeah, I believe there were only in the state's history
three fatal mountain lion attacks, so This is a big
deal there as folks obviously are big outdoors outdoors been
so much hiking, and she was on a hiking trail,
so this was a suspected attack.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
But when you hear what happened.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
This is about seventy miles northwest of Denver, and there
were two other hikers who saw a mountain lion standing
over this woman's body and they were able to throw
rocks at it to get it to go away. One
of them was a physician so rushed to this woman's
aid and she had no pulse.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
It was too late, but they were able.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
To track down not one, but two mountain lions, and
they did euthanize them, which is the custom, and they're
now checking to see if they had any issues Raby's, etc.
But just a scary and rare occurrence.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
Yeah, as outdoorsy as that state is, this will get
attention for sure, and certainly since it's been that long
since we've seen anything like it. Also, want to give
you an entertainment note here Will Smith. A lot of
people woke up to the headlines that Will Smith has
been sued for well various things, sexual harassment is in
(05:27):
their wrongful termination. But this all has to do roams
with someone who made a name for himself on What
was a Hit.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
Talent Show, Yeah, America's Got talent. Brian King Joseph. He
is a violinist and electric violinist. He made the finals.
He's in the top three of that show back in
twenty eighteen. He says that he had private meetings with
Will Smith to become a part of his tour that
began I Guess in the spring, his latest album, and
(05:55):
he is making allegations not just of sexual harassment, but
of grooming and pre editory like behavior.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
The details are minimal.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
We just heard about some alleged hotel break in that
had a bizarre display of items left behind, including a note.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
And we use breaking very likely there, but really he says,
someone left a bottle of beer, a note that said
I'll be back by five thirty, HIV medication was in
the room, hospital discharge papers were in the room, and
he never heard anything about it again. It was signed
(06:34):
Stone f So I mean, very few details and some
bizarre ones that we are getting. But anytime Will Smith's
name is attached to something like this and folks are
paying attention, but we'll get any updates to you on
that as they come. Want to give you an update
also about the Kennedy Center Kennedy Centing Honors. The ratings
we talked about some the new numbers came out and
(06:57):
that this year was the lowest ratings for the Kennedy
Center Honors that were hosted for the first time by
a sitting US president. Of course, Donald Trump. I didn't
expect this role that they have come out now the
Kennedy Center Press office, but out of statement defending the
ratings by first attacking the media.
Speaker 1 (07:18):
Yes, because when you have low ratings and Trump's name
put side by side, them are fighting words. So yes,
they came out swinging and they said, comparing this year's
broadcast ratings to prior years is a classic apples to
oranges comparison and evidence.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Of far left bias. That's a new one.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
They went on to say the program performed extremely well
across key demographics and platforms, despite industry and timing disadvantages,
including a Tuesday air date two days before Christmas.
Speaker 3 (07:52):
Now, I'll give them that there were disadvantages, but it
was just not a year over year. This is the
lowest ratings they've ever seen for the show things are
just facts, and that's fine. You can explain this and that.
I was just surprised. Maybe I shouldn't be that they're
actually explaining them away with don't don't even believe the
numbers because the far left is reporting the numbers. This
(08:13):
is just well.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
The Kennedy Center released this with the board that Trump appointed,
so that is also to be noted. They went on
to say, with overall television usage down roughly twenty percent
year over year, I don't know if that's true or not,
the broadcast still tied for the number one spot among
adults age twenty five to fifty four, alongside a live
(08:35):
NBA doubleheader.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
Yeah, that's I mean, that is true.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
You don't want to go against something live sports that
people are very much interested in. That's a fair point
to make. But yeah, it had three point one million viewers,
and as you pointed out, that is the lowest of
all time.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
You know that stings.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
No, they can explain it. Speaking in one other television
note here, and of no, I'm so curious of how
Netflix Stranger Things. The finale was released on what midnight
right on New Year's Yes on News the evening Ye's Day,
So Netflix crashed almost immediately, but they said it only
lasted a few seconds. But I didn't realize robes that
(09:16):
they had. Whatever the final numbers are for viewership will
be what they are. But I was surprised that that
movie that show made twenty million dollars that night. I
forgot they were putting it in theaters as a special
night thing.
Speaker 1 (09:32):
They're saying, and they're still working it out because they
say it could go upwards even thirty million when the
numbers settle, and I thought it was interesting.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
I didn't realize this.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
You can't actually charge for tickets because of the contract
with Netflix, so.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
They actually created these tickets with.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
Concession cash, so you buy your ticket, but it really
is a It's like a concession voucher basically, and that's
how they got around it.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
Didn legally get around anything.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
I thought that was really creative and interesting.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
But yet I think that it did that well in
the theaters and then to have crashed Netflix at the
same time, it just shows the level of interest. We
had a little one in our house very eager and
excited to watch The Stranger Things finale, and she said
it lived.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
Up to expectations.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
Happy New Year, I'll see y'all late. I'm going to
watch my show. It's really how it wins. All right, folks,
stay with us here. I don't know how your New
Year's Eve was, but Pink spent hers in the hospital.
Also for whatever reason, Trump and Clooney are going at
it again, and we got the final four in college football.
(10:36):
Congratulations to Nick Saban. Stay here, all right, folks, welcome
back to this quick and late morning run here on
this January second, twenty twenty six. I just wanted to
pass along a few headlines to get you caught up
(10:58):
on a couple of things here in acting the fact
that singer Pink spent her New Year's Eve in the hospital.
Her family wasn't by her side. Obviously they talked about
that as a family, did they not.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
They had to have made the decision, because she did
make a point to say, I'm here alone while my
family's skiing.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
Yes, smile on her face.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
Of course she did. But yeah, this is this was
not a minor booboo that she was in there for.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
Yeah, she actually was getting two new discs in her neck.
She made a joke that she wasn't getting a fancy facelift,
but she's getting two new shiny discs in her neck,
a new scar, and she talked about being grateful. She
said that I appreciate this vessel that I have and
use it for all it's worth. So she was just
reflecting as many of us did on New Year's e
But she reflected from her hospital that saying, hey, I'm
(11:44):
fixing my body, and look, that is a tough decision
to make.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
And I guess maybe that was just when.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
The surgeon was available on New Year's Eve, and she
probably said, Hey, I don't want to ruin everyone's New
Year's Eve. Y'all go do your thing, go ski, go
have fun, and I'll just recover here in the hospital
by my.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
She did say alone. She didn't have to do that.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
She did say alone. Maybe she I don't know. She
said she was okay with it, but then maybe in
the moment she's like, man, damn, I'm alone. It's New
Year's Eve.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
I'm thinking about something. She had a big social media
thing with her husband years ago in which he left
a pan soaking in the sink and she went on
and it got so many men and women involved in
the debate because don't just sit at there, you had
no intention of cleaning it. Don't tell me it's soaking.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
Soaking, that's what That's what my college roommates used to always.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
Say, Like I was, like, guys, so I know she
doesn't mind giving her husband the business on social media
if she needs to. So this was what makes me
think of that.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
I actually think it speaks to the quality of their
relationship that they can poke fun at each other.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
They can have fun with each other even publicly.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
Criticize each other, yes, by some stuff at the house.
Speaker 1 (12:48):
It means there is a huge level of trust and
love that you can do that and know you're still.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
Going to be okay.
Speaker 3 (12:52):
And the reason I remember that is because she was
my last interview before I left GMA, and we were
going round around about it as well.
Speaker 2 (12:58):
You were so impressed with her.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
I love that woman, Oh love that woman. All right,
Trump and Clooney, this has been an ongoing thing. I
think it's clear the two don't like each other. But
there's a new round of this because the Cloonies, if
you haven't heard, were just given French citizenship. There has
been some criticism and plenty of circles that they deserve
(13:20):
blah blah blah, France has defended it, so on and
so forth. So now the President felt he wanted to
chime in and this one. Some of this is funny.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
Yes, he was classic Trump when he decided to he
unnecessarily took a swipe at George Clooney, but he saw
the opportunity and he went with it. Right, So this
is what he wrote. Good news exclamation point. George and
wal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time,
have officially become citizens of France, which is sadly in
(13:53):
the midst of a major crime problem because of their
absolutely horrendous handling of immigration, much like we had under
sleepy Joe Biden. He never misses an opportunity, does he.
All Right, remember when Clooney, after the now infamous debate,
dumped Joe during a fundraiser only to go to the
other side of another stellar candidate, Jamala, and then.
Speaker 3 (14:14):
He put k I don't understand that, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:19):
Because he always called her Kamala instead of Kamala. I
know he did that, but I don't know why he
said Jamala, who is now fighting it out with the
worst governor in the country, including Tim Waltz, Gavin nooscum
for who was going to lead the Democrats to their
future defeat. Clooney got more publicity for politics than he
did for his very few and totally mediocre movies.
Speaker 2 (14:42):
He wasn't a movie star at all.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
He was just an average guy who complained constantly about
common sense in politics. And then he put in all caps,
make America great again, classic Trump. That's all I can say.
I mean, that is exactly what you would expect.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
It's not shocking and slightly conical.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
And some will tell you it's brilliant. Pr You take
something that's in the headline, you draw attention to yourself
for it, and then move on to other things you
want to do. That's that was a while when it wasn't.
How do we get to France's crime rate? And Gavin
Newsom in the same.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
And immigration he got immigration in there too.
Speaker 3 (15:22):
Yeah, oh, all right, finally here you all might have watched,
stayed up late, even man, you missed a classic. It
really was a classic. It didn't go the way at
least this household necessarily wanted to go. But the Old
Miss Georgia game last night was a phenomenal football game
and a pretty significant upset. Ole Miss, after losing their
(15:43):
coach Lane Kiffen to LSU, is now marching on and
has a chance to win it all. That's a that
would be a suite and a cool story. But these
dudes can play, so Old Miss will be playing in
Miami and Indiana will be playing Oregon. If you got
any comfort out of yesterday, even though Georgia did lose,
bro it had to be seeing Alabama get the afterlute
(16:03):
snot beat out of them.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
They got slaughtered.
Speaker 1 (16:05):
Yeah, it's so interesting and I think you'll appreciate this
because so here's the deal.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
I watched Alabama get slaughtered.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
My brother was at the Ole Miss Georgia game and
I was saying to him, well, the good news is
as we were heading in they were heading into the stadium,
I said, the good news is Alabama is getting murdered.
Because I'm one of those crazy SEC guys who actually
wants Alabama to win.
Speaker 2 (16:28):
So he was like, and I said, I.
Speaker 1 (16:29):
Don't share your feeling, but you know I respect it,
And he really said, I actually don't want to see
Alabama lose. I will always root for the SEC. Yes,
so I think you're in the same boat. So he
did say that to me, but I went to I
was exhausted, barely slept on New Year's Eve, so I
could not keep my eyes open. So halftime, I told you,
I was like, I gotta go to bed. I cannot
(16:50):
keep my eyes open. And I saw we were twenty
one to twelve, I think, and I thought, look, it's
not I didn't feel totally safe, but I felt pretty good.
We looked good in the first half. I felt good
about the game. Man, I woke up.
Speaker 3 (17:02):
It was a great game, though. It was a great,
great college football game. But the hats off Trinidad shameless
that amazing.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
Yes it was impressive.
Speaker 3 (17:13):
Yes, all right, So January eighth, January ninth, when the
games do start back up, I will give you a
quick a quick quote of the day as we wrap
this up. Cry hard, but don't cry long. Remember the
best revenge is to move on. Take that with you today.
I'm sure there's somewhere and there's somebody that you are
(17:37):
hung up on and they ain't even thinking about you.
Or there might be somebody you still hung up on
and they're looking right at you and they know they
are holding something over you because they're still seeing you cry.
You want to win that one. Just move on.
Speaker 1 (17:52):
You know.
Speaker 2 (17:52):
It's funny.
Speaker 1 (17:53):
I love that quote because obviously we've all heard the
best revenge.
Speaker 2 (17:56):
Is success, But I do like the idea of the
best revenge is to move on.
Speaker 1 (18:01):
When you hold on to anger and you hold on
to that feeling, you're the only one who suffers, truly,
you're not affecting the other person at all.
Speaker 3 (18:09):
So with that, folks, we hope you had a wonderful
start to your new year. Appreciate doing a lot of
runs with you in twenty twenty six. But for now,
I'm TJ. Holmes On behalf of Amy Robot. We will
talk to you all soon.
