Speaker 1 (00:02):
Hey there, folks. It is Saturday, July twenty sixth and
this week England, Spain and Australian who survived a shark
attack and steak bacon all made for a hell of
a recovery for us this week. And welcome to this
Saturday morning run, your recovery run. Yes, Romes, we did
a little better this week at trying to find ways

(00:24):
to recover and not work so much, work so hard,
but still struggle at times.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
I love the idea of the recovery run because it's
not just about hey, I napped more or I slept better.
This is actually about active recovery. So you are doing something,
but you're doing something that helps your body and your mind,
maybe more importantly, recover from the stress of the week.
And so we've been trying to be intentional about finding

(00:50):
little recovery runs throughout the week that helped the week
actually feel better, more fulfilling, and just gives you an
opportunity to be your best when you do have to
put it all in, when you have to do that fast,
hard run that we call life each and every day.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
What do we do for? Was the movie or soccer for?
When do we see the.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Movie you know what, it's so funny all the days
blend into one another. But we did manage to see
a movie we have been trying to see now for
a while. We might have done it on Sunday at
the beginning of the well, we started the week on Sunday,
so Sunday to Sunday. So we finally saw I Know
what you did last summer. We've been wanting to see
this reboot of a cult classic. And you know what,

(01:38):
we finally had some movie theater popcorn too. We gave
ourselves a little indulgence that we have been avoiding for
the last couple of months. Okay, so we decided to
go back to a keto diet and it has been amazing. Actually,
we never felt better. We both are looking and feeling
our best now. And so we've gone past that six

(02:00):
week mark and what we're like two months into it
and accounting maybe more like two and a half months.
And so we decided to have a little cheat and
we split a small bag of movie theater popcorn, which
used to be our absolute reason to go to the
movies almost and we have a large extra large with
extra butter, so now we got a little small bag

(02:23):
and honestly, it was phenomenal because sometimes I feel sick
after I go to the theater because I eat too
much popcorn. So this is a nice way to have
a little pop of pleasure and watch something that we
were excited.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
We have been trying for weeks to see a couple
of movies that were out and we just have not
been able. We just have not had the time, haven't
had the energy.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
At the times prioritized it.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
We haven't. And I think most people can't prioritize movie going,
but we can prioritize recovery. And this is something that
we enjoy that we have been not able to do
because of schedule, and we just we do. This is
something we actually enjoy. It's not a small thing. It
actually is good for us. But is this me complaining?
This is where I I took issue with the movie.
I didn't like what they did. They pissed me off

(03:03):
in the movie. I know what you did last summer,
how the plot and how it twisted at the end.
It kind of took away some joy of that first
one for me. And you know, I was hot at
the end of the day.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Yeah, because yes, if you're a huge fan of the
movie which we are the twist which we will not
give away, let's not didn't didn't feel authentic, plausible. It
didn't feel plausible or authentic. It was kind of like,
come on, it.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
Took so much sweet thing from the first movie was
ruined with this follow up that I just wanted to
hold on to that memory.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
It was ruined in the like pretty early on plot
and then at the end it was like a knife to.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
The gut, so really knife to the gut.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
Literally, I went for it, went for it, kept it.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
So even as we were recovering, I still walked out pists.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
But it was fun to feel an emotion other than
I'm so tired from working so much. So yes, we
did prioritize that and do that. We also have had
some fun really getting into the Women's FIFA Eurogame. The
semifinals were this week, and so we actually talk about prioritizing.
We planned our entire Tuesday and Wednesday around seeing those games,

(04:17):
which I love a European game because you know what's
happening around three pm or was it two pm?

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Three pm?

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Anyway, mid afternoon in the United States, so it's for us,
at least for those of us who get up really
really early. That is amazing. We didn't have to stay
up late to watch it, and we actually had a
lot of fun and one of the games was a
lot more interesting than the other. Italy versus England was
a showstopper. It was awesome. Germany and Spain not quite
as interesting. But we're very excited Sunday, everybody tomorrow final

(04:48):
game between England and Spain, and that is musty television
for us because we're invested.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
I cannot say just how much joy that brought me
to be able to look forward to three o'clock on
Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. It's there's not a
lot of things that just you get that giddy and
excited about, and just soccer, in European soccer and world
class soccer is one of those things I'll usually only
watch if there are countries involved that are playing. I

(05:15):
don't could keep a Premier League and all that stuff.
I love this stuff.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
I'm the same way because when you actually have an
like what other sport other than when you're in the Olympics,
is an entire country cheering for you. And if you
ever have the amazing chance to be in Europe when
any of these series are going on and you're in
a country where that country is playing, you'll get it
in a way that you can't get it living here
in America.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
To the point, we want to plan trips to Europe
around when they're playing, and we don't have to go
to the town where the matches have been played, long
as they're on TV somewhere and you're in one of
those European.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Countries, you've got a European plaza, piazza, whatever, and they've
got big screen televisions laid out everywhere, and the like
every bar, every restaurant is cheering or booming with the
It's such an amazing part of belonging and feeling like
you're a part of something. So yes, that's just we
need to do that. I've been asking when is the
next series and when can we plan the trip to

(06:10):
be somewhere where we can have that fun experience of
feeling like we're a part of it. So that has
been That was a really bright, big bright spot of
recovery for us this week.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
The other we had an unexpected treat this week a visitor,
a guy I haven't seen in many, many years, but
he is very meaningful to me in my life because
he took me to do something I'm absolutely fearful of
to this day. And you know it. We were turks
not too long ago. Five of us four, y'all in
the water in your life beat.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
I'm good on the boat.

Speaker 1 (06:43):
Y'all did get me out snorkeling once?

Speaker 2 (06:45):
You did?

Speaker 1 (06:46):
You did? Yep? But I went shark diving years ago,
twenty sixteen as part of a segment. But Paul de
Guelder is the guy who took me. Paul de Gelder
a lot of people know. Discovery has been using him
for thirteen years now. He doesn't lot of their shark
shows during Shark Week, but Robes of Reason people will
immediately recognize him because he is a part of special Force.

(07:07):
In his training, he years and years ago was attacked
by a shark, lost his right arm and his right leg,
and right to that day he wears a prosthetic on
his right arm right leg like the baddest ass prosthetics
you've ever seen. But he goes around, he trains, he
teaches about sharks. He's much sought after speaker. Now again

(07:28):
he does the Shark Week shows and he as you
now know, Robes because I met him there first, and
then I invited you. We're having such a good time
you were done shopping with Ava said, why did you
come by?

Speaker 2 (07:38):
This?

Speaker 1 (07:38):
Dude's personality is hard to describe. He is an absolute blast.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
Well, you know what, he's anyone anyone who has faced
death or thought they were going to die, whether it
was a a shark attack or a plane accident, or
cancer or a car accident, whatever it is. If you
have been in that headspace, you live differently, you act differently.
You are different. And I would argue better and brighter

(08:05):
and full of life, and that is exactly what Paul is.
He takes life and he lives it, and you can
see it in his energy. With everything he does. Everything
he says, it's intentional, it's purposeful, and he knows, he
gets it. He gets that we're here to live. We're
not all here waiting to die. We're here to live.
And he even like you'd think that that experience would

(08:26):
keep him out of the water forever, Nah, he went
right back in and now it's his life. That's how
he makes his living and it's it was impressive as
hell to meet him, But you know what's also impressive Babe.
We talk about this. You talk about this on our
podcast often. You always say, if you see somebody, if
you think of somebody, pick up the phone and just

(08:46):
say hi. The only reason why I got to meet
Paul this week and you met up with him after
so many years is because you saw him on television
and you picked up the phone.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
I forgot about that. You're right, while I do what
I preach one hundred percent. He just happened to be
in town promoting Shark Week stuff. I think he was
on CNN. I saw his face, took a quick snap,
said hey man and see you in a while. You're
looking great, hope everything's well. Just want to say hello.
He said, yep, I'm in New York for a couple
more days. And we made the point to make sure
we got together. And because of that, now, I mean

(09:18):
we had You got to meet this guy. And he's
just such a character, and he has such he has
such energy, and he is wild like he is a nut.
He'll sit down, he'll out drink you. He talks all
kinds of shit. He's got more stories than you can
even imagine. But that is how it comes about it.
Just make them up. Could have looked up and saying, oh,
there's Paul. Well, now how he's doing it looks good

(09:40):
and going back about my day. Just wanted to say, hey,
I was thinking about you.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
It was really cool, and we actually want to get
him on the podcast. Well, and he said, he's like,
I only want to do them in person. He was
racing out. So the next time he's in town, we're
sitting down with him to let you hear his stories.
And he has so many not just cool stories, but
stories that actually have purpose and meaning behind them. So
I loved listening to him the short bit of time
I got to spend with it.

Speaker 1 (10:02):
You talk about all the time people change how they
view life and look life and look at life after
going through a near death experience. I never heard anybody
put it this way, he said, he is. I said, man,
you don't not scared of anything. Now he's going shark diving. Still,
he jumps out of planes and all this sit He said, no, no, no, no, no,
I'm freaked out. I'm scared to death. He said, the
only time I wasn't scared is when I was attacked

(10:24):
by a shark. Because I accepted my fate. I thought
I was gonna die. He said, there was a piece
that came over me in that moment, all these other
moments when I'm jumping out of planes and the parachutes
not he said, no, no, no, I'm scared to tell because
I'm still fighting to survive. I'm fighting to live. I
know there's still a chance. I thought that was such
a way to put.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
That is and maybe when you know when you actually
are dying, and he believed he was. Obviously you can
imagine losing two limbs and bleeding out in the water
with a shark, a bull shark sitting there. You're like,
I'm done that there was a piece to that. Maybe
even then doing some of these deathifying things, he does
now he knows that when death does come, and it's

(11:02):
coming for all of us, there will be peace, and
maybe that gives you a little bit more courage to
face your fears.

Speaker 1 (11:08):
You know, that was a highlight of other week for me.
That really really was. That was a tree And I'm
so glad you got to meet him. I've been talking
about him for years, but it's no small thing. I'm
not easy to go shark diving, and that was the
guy who would I'll remember him the rest of my.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
Life scared to death of sharks. So that's like been mine.
Oh my god, that's I think the thing. If I
had to say what I'm most fearful of, it is
absolutely this idea of sharks. I think it's because I
saw Jaws too early in my life and forever for everybody, forevermore,
I will always be so that he was amazing to meet.
Something that we've mentioned this, I think. But we are
training for the Stockholm Half Marathon on August thirtieth, so

(11:45):
we're deep into our training runs now and I have
had so many good runs this week. Sometimes I have
terrible runs, but I've had some good ones, and I
would attribute it to running to Michael Singer's podcast. I
have talked a lot about him. I love his books
Untethered Soul. But he has a podcast out and he
was on a hiatus for a while, so I saw

(12:06):
he had a bunch of new episodes drop, so I've
been listening to them. And I've always loved this idea
of trying to improve my mind at the same time
I'm improving my body. And while I'd love for you
all to listen to our podcasts, any of these are
Morning Runs. They're always fun to listen to.

Speaker 1 (12:23):
I really not about to promote somebody else I do.

Speaker 2 (12:25):
I just want to say, hey, if you want to
check out after you listen to Morning Run or any
of our other podcasts, it's a great one to listen to.
He I just love. He has the same theme throughout all,
but he just has a great way of putting it
in a way that makes it make so much sense
to me. And it's stuff I already know, but it's
just always good to be reminded of and it makes

(12:46):
my runs go by so quickly. So I know you
think I'm crazy because music just gets old after a while.
There's only so many times I can listen to certain
songs that motivate me. So I love switching it up
and running to podcasts. So that was actually a really
fun way for me to recover while I was running.

Speaker 1 (13:04):
I need to send you some new music because you know,
I make I almost make a playlist today for a
different run, depending on the mood.

Speaker 2 (13:11):
You do that planning, and for me, that's just not
my personality. I actually get out and I'm like, crap,
I don't have anything to listen to and I'm not
planning ahead the way you do with your music, which
is smart.

Speaker 1 (13:22):
All right, though, all that was a good time, but
the highlight, at least what we finally said we have
to do something for ourselves, and what was that it
was to go get dinner at four fifteen and go
to bed at seven.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
Welcome back everyone to this Saturday morning Recovery run, where
we're talking about the ways that we have deliberately found
time to recover active recover during the week when all
hell is breaking loose, and we did so much better
this week than last week. And we hope we're motivating
you or inspiring you to prioritize recovery. And it comes

(14:09):
in many different forms, but I believe my highlight was
certainly when we finally on Thursday. You know, that's always
the day of the week where you know, you know
Friday's coming, but the weight of the week and the
fatigue of the week starts kind of piling on you.
And we looked at each other at four fifteen and
realized we had not eaten at all during the day

(14:31):
because we had been working, and we were going to
be like making dinner for the family. The things that
we've been doing pretty much every day this week when
I say we mostly you, But.

Speaker 1 (14:40):
What were we doing Thursday? Where were we were apart?
What happened?

Speaker 2 (14:43):
Third? Well, I had a hair appointment, you had an
orthodontist appointment. We had some things where we were kind
of two ships passing. But we finally got together.

Speaker 1 (14:52):
And I asked you, when you asked me, we looked
at each other. You haven't eaten, You haven't eaten you,
it's four o'clock. What are we doing?

Speaker 2 (14:59):
What are we doing? And so it's funny. I think,
av my oldest who's with us for just a few
more weeks, and Annalie is same, just for a few
said hey, y'all coming to make dinner for us? Now,
I mean really, it's like they're five and six years
old again. And I said, you know what, actually we're not.
We're gonna go out to eat. Mom. It's only four thirty,
I know, but we're going out to eat, and we're

(15:21):
going to a wonderful steakhouse and we're going to have
a wonderful dinner. I just ordered groceries to the apartment.
You ladies, knock yourselves out. So they made dinner for themselves,
which was awesome, and we bellied up to the bar.

Speaker 1 (15:35):
Who else has ever done this? This can't just be us.
We're looking for a restaurant and we google thick bacon
appetizer near me.

Speaker 2 (15:45):
That you had in your head exactly, that's such a
keto thing to eat.

Speaker 1 (15:50):
But some places, if you've ever gone, every few places
will have this thick bacon and sometimes it's just random.
Most steakhouses will have it, but some random place and
it's just delicious. I don't know why it was in
our heads that we, oh, my head, I had to
have it. And sure enough, we haven't been in a while.
Morton's down here in Lower Manhattan World Trade. We've been
going there for years. We've sit at the bar every time.

(16:12):
We just love that place. And we got to go
in there and get our bacon and some wagu meatballs
and a couple of seas of salads and we were
as happy as could be.

Speaker 2 (16:20):
It was amazing. So we wrapped that up and yeah,
just chilled and just took some time one on one
where we weren't surrounded by children. And when I say children,
they're all much older, but still they're always going to
be our children. And we got back home and we
were legit in bed by seven fifteen. I looked at
my aura ring and I got my best sleep score

(16:43):
of the week that night. So yes, we're not eighty
years old, but I'm not upset by it. The blue
plates is it called the blue plate special? When you
come in early, like you know, you can always get
a seat when you're going to I think we got
to by the time we got to Morton's. I think
it was four. Actually you know what it was for
forty four because I saw it on my phone. It

(17:05):
was four forty four and we were ordering dinner. And
I wasn't ashamed. I was proud.

Speaker 1 (17:12):
No, I was happy. I'll get out that day. There's
no problem with that. We we get do you have
the same thing? Every morning? I end up seeing an
unread text message from my daughter because she scented it
later then I yes, was it? Oh yeah, been available? Okay?

Speaker 2 (17:30):
Oh my kids? Uh well, you know we're in complete
opposite schedules, at least from them, because they go out
in fact annals. I have no idea. Sometimes she has
come in within minutes of us getting up, and I
will actually text her when we're up and she's back
in her bedroom still on her phone about to go
to bed and we're up for the day and she
hasn't gone to sleep for the night. So yes, but

(17:52):
they laugh, they think it's so funny we came in.
Sometimes this has happened. We will be sitting on the
couch or like up against the coffee table. We had
been watching a TV show and we will have fallen
asleep with our heads like touching each other, and it's
eight thirty at night, and they come in. They're like,
mom TJ. Like, seriously, you try getting up at three am. Ladies,

(18:15):
you try or two thirty in your life.

Speaker 1 (18:18):
That's you. I don't defend it at all. Yep, I
was sleeping, have a good night.

Speaker 2 (18:25):
In fact, I think you fell asleep before dinner this week,
and I think it was the rare night. Maybe I
was making something and Sabine was taking pictures of you
that was.

Speaker 1 (18:35):
Funny, like yourselves out. But yeah, we did do better
this week. Hopefully we do better next week as well.
But it does. It does add to the feeling and
a calm and a piece and just a joy when
you do take moments. Because we had to carve them
out because I was actually disappointed in us the previous week.

Speaker 2 (18:56):
We were terrible the week before, and I do think.
I mean, this is a challenge and to everyone listening,
we would love for you to do the same, because
when you start to make it, to put recovery on
your to do list, that actually makes it. It prioritizes
it in a way when it's in your mind and
you say, I have to put me first. And a
lot of times we have to put us first. Parents,

(19:18):
mom and dad, you know your relationship. It's okay to
be selfish. I remember I felt a twinge of guilt
not going back, not making food, and I was like, wait,
what am I thinking? This is not the way we
need to be organizing our lives. So anyway, it's just
another reminder to sometimes put yourself first and put your
relationship first above all else. But anyway, we hope you

(19:40):
all have an amazing weekend and a week where recovery
is a part of your daily chores. And with that,
thank you for listening. I may need roboch on behalf
of my partner. TJ. Holmes. Have a great weekend. Everybody
