Speaker 1 (00:22):
Martin Folk Trash Tuesday, August nineteenth, twenty twenty five, coming
up on roland Mark No Unfolture, streaming live on the
Black Star Network. Texas Republicans literally hold a black state
legislator hostage, refusing to allow her to leave the Texas
House until she signs a permission slip that she would
(00:45):
be accompanied everywhere she goes by a state trooper. We'll
talk with State Rep. Nicole Collier right here exclusively from
the Texas House floor, which is essentially has been her
home for the last twenty four hours. Also, another black
state legislator said she was out of her morning walk
(01:06):
and the state trooper threatened to arrest her because she
was walking too fast. I told y'all, these Republicans are
out of their mind. In Texas, the US Marshalls they
have it. They have a tip line that says you
can get five hundred bucks for reporting a crime. I
(01:27):
think we should all use that QR code and tell
them to go arrest Donald Trump all those thugs at
sixteen hundred Pennsylvania Avenue. Breast cancer a huge issue of
impacting African Americans. We'll talked to a nonprofit leader about that. Also,
our marketplace segment. We've got a chef with one of
a new products, will be dabty talking about that as well.
(01:50):
Lots to break down, Plus my Spike Lee interview Abody's
new movie with Vinzel Washington. It's time to bring the
punk a rollingd Martin Unfilcher on the Black Studing Network.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Let's go peace got whatever the he's on it, whatever
it is, he's got to school the fact the fine
and Winna believes he's right on top and it's rolling.
Best believe he's going putting it out from Boston news
to politics with entertainment just bookcase he's going. It's it's
(02:28):
rolling Montag Yeah, rolling with he's books breast, she's real
the question, No, he's rolling.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Marte, No, Marte, folks, this literally there's literally.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
What was Texas State repnicle call your last night sleeping
at her desk on the floor of the Texas House. No,
she didn't get evicted from apartment. No she couldn't. She
could afford a hotel room. But the Republicans they told
her unless she signed a permission slip, she would not
(03:19):
be able to leave the Texas House. They locked the doors.
They want her to join the other Democrats who broke
KORM to sign a permission slip that says that they
will be accompanied by a Texas State trooper wherever they go,
because they don't want any of the Democrats leaving the
(03:40):
state again to stop the racist Jerry Mender maps from
being passed. Now, they plan on passing these maps tomorrow
and so as a result, Representative Collier joined us right
now from the Texas House floor. As you see behind her,
nobody's in the chamber. She's wearing the same clothes she
had on yesterday. I believe Representative call you're glad to
(04:03):
have you here. People around the country literally saying what.
Speaker 4 (04:07):
The hell you know what, Roland, thank you for having
me so am.
Speaker 5 (04:11):
I it is absurd, as you say, It is as
absurd as what you explained it. I mean, the audacity
to expect a woman, a person, a human being to
be subjected to this type of treatment is Unamerican. It's
uncalled for and unnecessary.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
Okay, so walk people through what you were told. Because
you're the only one, meaning all the other Democrats who
broke WORM they signed that permission slip.
Speaker 4 (04:46):
Yeah, yeah, so listen.
Speaker 5 (04:49):
Once KORM had been established, I did return to the
floor after the korum had been established.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
And the reason why I returned.
Speaker 5 (04:57):
To the floor was because there would there's a the
potential for a fight to change our constitutional rules, and
you needed at least forty five Democrats to show up.
So I was one of those who came to be
here for the fight with my Democrats. But what I
heard once the quorum had been established was the speaker say,
those Democrats who broke form are free to leave this
(05:19):
building if they sign a permission slip agreeing to be
released into the custody of DPS, not just monitoring, but
being in their custody. You know that sounds criminal. I'm
not a criminal, and I know it didn't sound right.
It makes sense to me, and I wasn't gonna go
with it, okay, And not only that, Kirk if I'm wrong,
(05:44):
another state rep told me that they're requiring each member
to pay for it. Well, I'm not sure about this
particular one, but before when they had DPS looking for
us when we were out of state, going to our
homes unnecessarily being wasteful sending DPS officers to our home
uh to look for us when they know good and
(06:05):
darn well, we were out of state because there was
very good evidence of that when we were doing our
interviews and meetings.
Speaker 4 (06:11):
But that's just more proof of their waste.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Why come back? You know, I made the point last
week that uh that listen, if these other Democrats wanted
to come back and wanted to break onm let them.
But essentially, you know, black black Caucus members, it's like
you're going back to your own lynching. They can pass
(06:36):
the maps. They're gonna pass the maps. It's going to
decimate black political power. It's gonna cut from floor to
two black congressional districts. There are some other legislators that
did not come back to Austin, So why come back?
Speaker 5 (06:51):
Well, you know what, Roland, if I didn't come back,
would we be able to see the grit that is
in every Texan right now, the crowd that is out
there fighting against this corrupt system who do not want
to see these rigged maps passed. No, we wouldn't see that.
That's why you got to show up. You got to
show up to fight. You know, not showing up you lose,
(07:12):
You're guaranteed to lose. But you got to show up
in order to take that fight. That's what I did.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
But aren't y'all guaranteed to lose tomorrow because the reality
is Republicans that they have a super majority. They can
pass the maps without y'all, but had the quarm break held,
they would not have an ability to even have the
hearings or even pass the map. And so did you
and others want to stay out or was it simply
(07:41):
too many other House Democrats said they weren't going to
go back.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
What we wanted to do is push back.
Speaker 5 (07:46):
We want to show America that we're not going to
just roll over and take it.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
We're going to fight and push back.
Speaker 5 (07:52):
We want to bring that back into our party, into
the Democratic Party, and let them know the fight never left.
You just got to tap into it. And so that's
what we're doing. We're showing America, even against insurmountable odds,
there's still the opportunity to fight and make a change again.
(08:13):
We know what the numbers are. I can count, I
can handle. I know even sloppy ted Cruise's sloppy math
will count and show that sixty two doesn't equals seventy six.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
So we know that we have to.
Speaker 5 (08:27):
Be here to try to push back and fight against
any effort to reduce our power, and we can only
do that if we're here.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
Okay, So clearly every other Democrats signed this slip. They've
got a trooper that's following them around. And you were
you there by yourself all night?
Speaker 5 (08:50):
No, no, In fact, the chair of the House Democratic
Caucus came back Jeen Wu, as did Representative Vincent Petz
from l past and today, just today, seven of my
colleagues tore up their paper and they have joined me
on this floor.
Speaker 4 (09:07):
They will be with me tonight in solidarity.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
Okay, so you'll be joined by several other House Democrats tonight.
Speaker 4 (09:16):
They're here. They're here right now.
Speaker 1 (09:20):
You talked about the folks outside. They also arrested some
protesters last night who were outside of the chamber and
give a folks, you don't so do they physically lock
the doors, meaning you cannot leave out of any exit
of the Texas House.
Speaker 5 (09:38):
I cannot leave the building, No, I cannot. The doors
have been locked. In fact, they've cut off the live
stream that usually runs twenty four hours a day. They
cut that off in the chamber. They have locked the
gallery so no one can come in here. And the
doors have been locked and they've been manned at all times.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
All right, So since they've done that, do y'all plan
to set up your ow own live stream so people
all around the country in the world can see what's happening.
Speaker 5 (10:05):
Yes, in fact, on my Instagram and Twitter page, we
are live streaming so that you can watch. And we
want to make sure that there's transparency, and so that's
what we're doing. That way we can hold this government
accountable for their bad acts.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
This is you know, you know, one of the things
that that that I have have consistently maintained is that
what you have here is you have a complete assault
on black rights. They are more eligible black voters in
Texas than any other state. And what I've said is
(10:43):
that the fundamental problem in Texas is that it's not
an organized it's not organized, it's not an organized state.
Speaker 4 (10:50):
I wanted to see what's going on here.
Speaker 1 (10:52):
Okay, what's what's going on? I don't know.
Speaker 5 (10:54):
The speaker up protein just walked in. I don't know
what's going on. So I just like to be nosy.
That's the type of person I am.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
You said, so you can ProTem is that who's behind
at the podium.
Speaker 5 (11:03):
Yeah, he's back behind me. Yeah, I just like to
know what's going on.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
Gotcha. For folks who don't know, who's the speaker ProTem
of Texas Joe Moody. Joe Moody, Republican Democrat from l Pasco,
Democrat from I don't know.
Speaker 4 (11:16):
Maybe maybe I don't know.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
Gotcha, So we can read a lot into that. What
I've said is that the problem in Texas is that
it is it's not organized.
Speaker 6 (11:32):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
You had when Bethel lost to Greg Abbot, some of the
seventy five percent of young people thirty and under did
not vote. You've got the same thing in terms of
black vote. And what I keep saying is the only
way to defeat these fascists. I mean, you got Greg
Abbot talking all kind of smack on social media, lying
left and right. But the folk have to vote. The
(11:54):
votes are there. The folk got actually use their use
their voting.
Speaker 5 (11:58):
Power, right right, I mean telling me, I'm telling you,
but they want to see something, whether they have to
feel compelled. You know, we're not dealing with the voters
from the past. You know, when my mom and dad voted,
it was to protect their right civil rights. Uh, you know,
we've got that gap generation where they got to feel something.
They don't know the struggle that my parents had and
(12:20):
the struggle that I had because we did so good.
You know, we're all sitting comfortable. You know a lot
of people are, and so that that may be harmful.
I mean, it may not allow them to see the
challenges that.
Speaker 4 (12:31):
Our ancestors, our ancestors face.
Speaker 5 (12:34):
And you know, on top of that, when our government
is telling you that you can't teach critical race theory,
you can't teach diversity, equity inclusion, They're going to be
a generation of lost souls if they don't know the
struggle and the fight, because not everybody who looks like
you are your friend, and not everybody who says they're
with you.
Speaker 1 (12:52):
Are I think that was was that a state lawmaker
behind you who tour up her paper? Yes, yes, if
she could step in, that would be great.
Speaker 5 (13:03):
They want you to come on in, all of you,
all of you.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
Yeah, yeah, so well, so here's what here's what we do.
So if y'all could actually just step back, if y'all
can step back that way, and if you could put
a couple of on Felicia's side, excuse me, on on
there you go, that you could step up, step up, Uh,
just step up? All right, there we go, give.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
Us your names save residents.
Speaker 7 (13:26):
Gonzalez from Dallas, Uh.
Speaker 8 (13:29):
Cassandra Garcia her niond is from Dallas as well, and
I'm Hala Lisa from Collin County.
Speaker 1 (13:35):
The three of you had previously accepted that permissionship sign it.
Why don't y'all decide to tear it up today?
Speaker 8 (13:44):
Well, I just want to say Representative Collier's courageousness is contagious,
and she was right. You know, I think that we
all need to be very vigilant as to what's going
on in our society, and sometimes we so easily just
signed thing right, and we don't realize with that signature
that we might be signing away our freedom or our dignity.
(14:07):
And that happens all the time, right, And so what
Representative Callier did was shine a light on that her
instincts were correct.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
What she did was right.
Speaker 8 (14:18):
And I think that within the chaos of everything that
was happening, you know, we got caught up in the
hustle and bustle of things.
Speaker 4 (14:25):
But when we.
Speaker 8 (14:25):
Slowed down and we started paying attention to what, you know,
the light that she was shining.
Speaker 9 (14:30):
She was right, And I'll add that I think a
representative Collier mentioned that part of this fight is showing
up for the fight, right, and once once we knew
there was quorum, then we wanted to be here for
the fight because for the next part of the fight.
And so yes, I mean I signed this that permission
stip as well. But you know, seeing you know, our
(14:51):
colleague send up for our democracy, setting up for what
is what is not right, because we are not criminals.
I am a lawyer myself, and I understand the law.
And nowhere in the rules is it's say that once
we voluntarily show up show up to DPS, that they
are allowed to have DPS follow us everywhere that we go.
Speaker 10 (15:12):
My neighbors say that I'm a criminal.
Speaker 9 (15:13):
They're concerned, like why why are there police officers that
are surveilling your home? And we're not criminals because we
have not broken any law. We're actually we're setting up
for our districts. And it is not our fault that
our Republican colleagues claim to be to be voting their districts.
We are doing what our districts want us to do.
Speaker 11 (15:33):
Yeah, and I might just add as well, I mean,
quite frankly, none of us intended or even knew that
this was going to be awaiting us whenever we showed up.
So I think a lot of us were just caught
up guard and realized that everybody was essentially going to
the room and doing this, and so we just naturally
were thinking this is just normal.
Speaker 10 (15:51):
But it's not normal.
Speaker 11 (15:52):
And it took the courage of Nicole saying I will
not do this for us to take a pause, just
like my colleagues said, to take up and recognize that
we shouldn't be just like my colleagues have said, be
treated like essentially like we've done anything wrong, because we haven't.
We've done everything and used every tool that we constitutionally have,
and now we're returning back to carry the fight over here.
Speaker 4 (16:15):
We're not running away. We will be here.
Speaker 11 (16:18):
We intend on being on the floor tomorrow so that
we see this through and that we can take it
to the courthouse. And so the fact that we are
being treated and followed and having to sign away essentially,
just like Representative Caller has said, you know, the ability
and the action of giving them that permission just speaks
in multitudes, and that's not what Texans deserved.
Speaker 4 (16:40):
That's not what we've been elected for.
Speaker 11 (16:42):
So we knew that it was right that we needed
to equally be here and support Representative Caller. She has
always very often been a voice within our caucus and
pushing back and asking why and you know what this was.
This was just another instance of when she did that,
and just.
Speaker 4 (17:01):
Like other instances in the past, she was fought on.
Speaker 11 (17:03):
So I think what's really important too is that we've
got some colleagues that maybe they want to be here,
but they can, and everybody has their different way of
being in this fight. We don't want to divide or
not recognize our other colleagues that are equally contributing in
different ways, whether it's not necessarily being on the floor
right now, but they're working on the strategy for tomorrow
(17:27):
because they're lawyers or what have you.
Speaker 4 (17:29):
But this was a.
Speaker 11 (17:30):
Moment where we all decided this is where we need
to be and so that we can continue with Representative
Caller to bring light and attention and continue to be
at the forefront so that people don't forget what's about
to happen tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (17:43):
This is going to decimate black political power in Texas.
Look I'm born and raised in Texas. I'm still registered there.
I live in the congressional My home is in the
congressional district of congress Woman Jasmine Crockett. My parents have
worked elections more than fifty years. I go back multiple
generations in Texas on my paternal on my dad's side.
(18:07):
And you know, there are a lot of folks, including me,
who said who wanted Democrats House to hold out longer
to stop them from passing anything? And do you believe
that with what we're now seeing, with the actions being taken,
how y'all are being treated, that did any of you
(18:29):
want to remain out to prevent a quorn? Because bot
line is they got the votes. They have the votes,
uh that they can ignore Democrats in Texas like they
can in Alabama, in Mississippi, in Tennessee, in Georgia in
so many other places.
Speaker 5 (18:47):
You know, one thing that was very interesting when we
got to Chicago is that we got to go see
visit our labor, our friends in labor. And one thing
that they have shown us is when you're part of
a group, you stick with the You may not agree
to the path, but when the majority does, you go
(19:07):
along and you don't cross that line.
Speaker 4 (19:10):
And so they have been.
Speaker 5 (19:12):
A shining example what it looks like to stand together,
because that's how you make change or get change is
if you, you know, stand in solidarity. In fact, they
gave us these bracelets that say solidarity to remind us
of the importance of staying.
Speaker 4 (19:27):
Together, because when we're together, we win.
Speaker 5 (19:30):
We may not win this particular battle in terms of
the maps, but the public, they'll have the ultimate victory
when they get a new president and get Trump out
of that White House, and when we can make sure
that we protect people's ability to have food, access to.
Speaker 4 (19:48):
Healthcare, earn livable wages.
Speaker 5 (19:52):
And so these are things that we're fighting for and
it takes a lot of us to work together. So
if Texas is going to do five, we want California
to do five. If Florida does three, we're gonna have
to pull to New Jersey and Maryland and New York
and we're gonna keep pushing and pushing to see if
(20:12):
we can bring in other supporters to take the same action.
Because you know, I know that they say when they
go low, we go high. But Roland, that high road
has crumbled.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
No, no, no, no, no, no. Let me perfectly clear. That
was Michelle Obama. I don't believe. I don't believe in
going high when they go low. I believe in going lower.
I believe because I'm because I'm just being perfectly clear. Listen,
Texas Republicans have shown us they don't care about rules,
they don't care about procedures. Uh, they support Donald Trump.
(20:44):
We see it in DC. These people have and listen,
I know y'all. Look, y'all are elected. Y'all, y'all, y'all
have all them phrases. You know, my colleague, my dear,
I don't use all of them. These people, these people,
they they have no morals, no value, no principles, no ethics.
They do not care, no integrity, no honor or decency.
(21:06):
It's about power. And Democrats are going to be I'm
to be, may be clear, as ruthless and as gangster
because what they want to do is they want to
they want to they want to lock in white rule
fifty two hundred years for Texas to be sixty one
percent people of color and then and they literally want
(21:26):
a congressional delegation that is more than seventy percent white.
It's crazy. And what I keep saying, you can't have
sixty one percent people of color in Texas, but sixty
one percent of the voters are white. Black people and
Latinos are going to have to turn out in massive
numbers in the next election to change what's happening in Texas.
(21:47):
Otherwise they're going to keep doing whatever the hell they
want to do.
Speaker 4 (21:50):
Roland, You ain't line. That's the truth, absolutely the truth.
Speaker 1 (21:56):
So do they at least do you get to bring
in food? What the hell do they do? They control everything?
Or is just like a hostage negotiation where you got
to negotiate stuff.
Speaker 4 (22:08):
I actually did negotiate something.
Speaker 5 (22:10):
I uh so the bathroom, I can use the restroom,
I'm allowed to eat, and I have water. In fact,
what I negotiated was being able to go to my
office and back as long as I'm escorted with the
sergeant or in DPS. But the hosts have been very gracious.
(22:31):
The only thing I don't have is a shower, so
I'm still or bed. Oh yeah, no bed, but my
chair is working.
Speaker 1 (22:38):
Okay, Well you know me, I'm like, damn, I wish
there was a window in the bathroom you can crawl
out of. But oh well, I look I look, I
would like for y'all to comme on this. So one
of your colleagues got pulled a tweet up. She posted
these tweets earlier and it was just crazy.
Speaker 12 (22:55):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (22:56):
And when I saw this, I couldn't believe it that
here she was on her morning walk and she posted
that there was a Cheryl Cole that she said, well,
at my morning walk, let me read this year in
the Muller neighborhood by DPS escort who was forced upon
(23:18):
me to track my every movement, threatened to arrest me.
He lost me on the trail, got angry about it
and made a scene in front of my constituents on
the trail. While a little shaken up from the incident,
I remain undeterred for this intimidation tactic by House Republicans
to have a twenty four to seven state police presidence
to intimidate me and my colleagues. This is also why
staying with my colleague Nicole Collier, who has refused to
(23:40):
go along with the Charaders, is still on the house
full twenty four hours later, would not be intimidated by this.
In history, we remember this. I mean, damn, he's mad
because he can't walk as fast as she does.
Speaker 5 (23:49):
Now sel she likes to walk, now, she jested, and
these are her streets. Now she know which way to
go on those streets. I don't know what happened. Cheryl
is is very kind, a very kind person, very astute,
and so I'm disappointed to hear that this happened to her.
(24:11):
And again, more intimidation tactics. And remember they are doing
DPS the Department of Public Safety. They're taking their directives
from the Speaker and the governor. They're doing what they
are being told to do. This person may not even
approve it or agree to it, but.
Speaker 4 (24:27):
He's got a job.
Speaker 5 (24:28):
He's got a job that he has to do, and
so you know, we got to be mindful of that.
I don't like the tactics that are being used because
I don't want anybody to lose their job, but if
they have to go to the point where they are
no longer professional, we've got a problem.
Speaker 1 (24:46):
I agree.
Speaker 13 (24:47):
And so.
Speaker 1 (24:49):
Look, good luck with this. I plan on. We're looking
at dates now, so I plan on bringing my show
to Texas because again, look, we know they're gonna pass
the maps. They're predicting to pass the maps tomorrow. But
the only way to counter these fascists in Texas, that is,
(25:10):
they have to be taken out at the ballot box.
And I really hope that that people now wake the
hell up and realize what is going on, because this
is all about satisfying Donald Trump. It is about creating
a schism between African Americans and Latinos. And we know
exactly for what this is and so keep up the
fight that we definitely will keep giving them hell as well,
(25:33):
because at the end of the day, this nonsense has
to stop.
Speaker 4 (25:37):
Absolutely. Thank you, thank you, will.
Speaker 1 (25:39):
All right, I appreciate it. Well, y'all be well, thanks
a lot, Thank you, Bye bye, all right, any aggers
of y'all group, gig them all right, all right, folks,
I'm gonna go to a break. We'll be right back.

Speaker 1 (27:06):
All right, folks, My panel doctor Mustaphosanteago Lee, former Senior
Advisor for a Barmarral Justice at the EPA, joined me
from DC. Doctor Larry J. Walker, social professor, University of
Central Florida. From Orlando, Tyler McMillan, social justice leader and
movement strategists. Glad to have all three of y'all here. Thanks.
The bunch moves south. I'll start with you. Look, this
is we see where the Republicans are. We see how
(27:28):
thuggish they are. This is kind of crap they're gonna
do in Texas. Look, they gotta fight back and listen,
I get what they're saying. I still disagree. I went
to Texas Democrats and held out even longer. Two weeks
to me was too short because they couldn't get anything passed.
And then a problem in the Texas Senate. Nine nine
Democrats walked off the floor held two of them stayed.
(27:50):
If the two that had walked out with them, they
couldn't have passed passed the Texas maps. To me, you
kind of use everything in your arsenal fighting these thugs,
because that's what they are. They are thugs.
Speaker 10 (28:03):
Yeah, they are most definitely that. You know. I think
all of us wish that they had stayed out longer,
that they had made sure that they continue to build
the momentum of people paying attention all these different types
of things, and you know, I just want to call
them from representative callure. Also, I remember the words that
doctor King when he said the time it is not
always right to do what's right. So I appreciate her,
(28:25):
you know, in this particular moment, and of course the
others who have torn up those slips. I'm also very
cure you know that what was it, eighteen sixty six,
they're in Texas, that same Texas state legislatures when they
plassed those the Black Codes, and those Black Codes are
very similar to the sets of actions that they're doing now.
Speaker 6 (28:42):
Now.
Speaker 10 (28:42):
I understand that they are democrats of all hues that
are a part of this, but the ripples of how
people used to view folks and the value folks are
still there because you remember, the Black Codes was about restrictions.
It was about being able to restrict people from voting,
from holding office, all these different time types of things
that we still see playing out today. So we've just
(29:04):
got to be very clear about where does this stuff
come from. Why do folks think that they have the
power to be able to do these things? And it's
because there is a history that exists there, and that's
why folks have to fight back, because it is both
about the past and what's going to happen, not only
in this moment but moving forward.
Speaker 1 (29:21):
And Larry, I'm glad that the other textas democrats realize
they shouldn't have signed that damn slip. They should have
told him go to hell. See and you're gonna talk
about sticking together. Every Texas House Democrat are to say
it all y'all can kiss my ass.
Speaker 17 (29:38):
Well, and we find out who's really about that work.
And one of the problems with what you just described
with them signing a form of Democrats in general is
their focus of de korma and not discord the disruption.
You got to shut it down, and you have to
do what everything in your power. You don't want future
generations to look back and say, hey, listen, if they
waited a few more weeks, then maybe they couldn't pass
the map. I think the other thing is when we
(29:59):
talk about the conversation about representative colony being forced to
stay on the house floor stay on the floor, is
that we have to make the connection between this issue
and how black bodies are seen as as ownership has
released to property throughout the United States history, particularly black women,
that they felt they had the right to tell this
(30:21):
sister that she can't leave, and that she leaves, she'll
be arrested. And once again that connection between black bodies
ownership and what we see and the state was former
part of the Confederacy in Texas is an example of
how we have to fight white supremacy throughout the United States.
So we can't continue to allow these individuals to.
Speaker 1 (30:41):
Get away with it.
Speaker 17 (30:43):
And once again, you have to be willing to disrupt
the system as much as possible to ensure the rights
of black folks and other minoritized groups aren't watered down.
Speaker 1 (30:52):
And listen, I made the point Tyli to these Democrats. Man,
make them arrest you. I said, go to yr High
and chill out and say, oh y'all want me, man,
come come to my crib, I say, And then they
come knock on your door, have a thousand folks outside,
walk out, kneel down in your front yard. I mean,
that's the kind of resistance. Can you imagine if every
(31:15):
single Democrat, sixty two of them, had said, I dare
y'all to stop all of us from walking out of here.
I dare y'all to put handcuffs on all of us,
and they should have bum rushed the damn door.
Speaker 7 (31:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 18 (31:32):
I think this was definitely the time for strategic resistance
to be, you know, at the forefront of what the
plan was. And I think when they broke form, they
carried the hopes of as you said, many black and
young voters who often felt silenced by this system that
often you know, systemically disenfranchises us. And I think the
frustration is very, very valid for many, you know, black voters,
(31:56):
especially you know, those who often see the nice side
of the politics. This was a time to show us
what type of survival we're actually standing in. And at
the same time, I also thought that, you know, it's
important that we grapple with the when we talk about
symbolism and strategy. And I think the lesson here is
(32:17):
like representation, representation matters. Representation without resistance isn't enough. And
I think the resistance should have been longer. And I
believe that the liberation right now from our leaders who
not only make us stand, but hold the line even
when even when it's uncomfortable. And I think the line
should have definitely been held longer, because now the question
(32:41):
is asked, uh is the momentum compromise for voter suppression and.
Speaker 1 (32:47):
Listen, I just can't accept this idea that we'll stop
for you can't play nice. And to Larry's point, my
biggest criticism of Democrats in DC and in texting other places,
they believe in institutions they want to do things nice
and right and fair and just don't want to raise
(33:09):
their voices doing no. What these people are doing is evil,
and you have got to fight evil with everything you got.
And now I'm telling you, they should have said here
and said, what's that man? I ain't signed that bullshit?
(33:29):
And somebody should have spit on their desk and said,
don't nobody signed that damn sheet of paper. I would
have dare them to lock every House Democrat into the house.
You got to create the spectacle.
Speaker 10 (33:45):
You do, and you know, it also helps to highlight
the fact that the system in Texas is broken. We
know it's broken in other states as well, but this is,
you know, an important moment, so you've got to do
whatever is necessary. You know, the author Rational Cargo one
time said that white feel and should never be held
in higher regard than black lives. And we know that
black lives are going to be impacted because that's why
(34:06):
they're doing this. You know, it's going to strip resources
the way, it's going to strip access away. So when
you don't do everything within your power to protect black lives,
it sends a message to those folks who have sent
you to office, to those who are looking to you
to be a voice for them for you also to
be able to stand up. So you know, they've got
(34:28):
to carry that now. And I understand there are all
these different dynamics. I understand, people got kids, people got
other jobs, and all kinds of different things that they've
got to be able to do. But when you raised
your hand, you also took the responsibility for your constituencies
and for all those black constituencies out there. You know
now they are going to be less represented, they're going
to be in greater danger. So you got to carry
(34:49):
that as well as all of the accolades that you
get when you do something right, when you do something
that is not right, when you do something that is
devastating for many communities, and you got to carry some
of that weight as well.
Speaker 1 (35:00):
Indeed, indeed, all right, y'all, I don't go to a
quick break, we come back. Why is it that governors
in three broke cass states are sending the National Guard
to DC when they got crime in their own red states?
And why is Fox News Crime likes the little punks
(35:23):
because Gavin Newsom is trolling Donald Trump. Oh, by the way,
did Donald Trump think that was a good side to slavery?
We'll tall. Show you what this food posted on social media?
Oh yeah, we got a lot to break down, folks.

Speaker 19 (36:20):
This week.
Speaker 20 (36:20):
On the other side of change, three hundred thousand black
women being pushed out of the workforce.
Speaker 7 (36:25):
This is shocking yet unsurprising.
Speaker 20 (36:27):
Well, what happens when a bunch of black mothers use
their federal job.
Speaker 10 (36:30):
Their kids are not being fed, their.
Speaker 20 (36:32):
Kids are not being taken care of, but that trick
goes down to the entire community structure, which may be
built on the backs of black mothers and black.
Speaker 11 (36:40):
Women were broadly tune in on the other side of
change only on the Blackstar Network.
Speaker 21 (36:47):
This is Samplo Man, and this is David Mann, and
you're watching roland Mark unfiltered.
Speaker 1 (36:57):
All right, y'all. So Louisiana, red state, Mississippi, red state, Tennessee,
red state. Why these dumb ass governors sending National Guard
troops to Washington.
Speaker 22 (37:13):
D C.
Speaker 1 (37:15):
Tate reeves, your punk ass ain't dealing with crime in Jackson, Mississippi,
the state capital, Bill Lee, punk ass, governor of Tennessee.
You ain't dealing with crime in Memphis, punk ass, Jeff
Landry in Louisiana, Yo, sorry, ass, ain't dealing with crime
(37:38):
in New Orleans. See. This is the bullshit, Larry that
we see from these Republican governors, all fronting, Oh, we
sit in our National Guard troops to help out, like
they sending troops to the border. No deal with the
stuff in your own red state. I see again. This
(38:00):
is what happens when folks don't want to push back
against these old punks, these maga punk governors.
Speaker 17 (38:10):
I've been watching this play out the last few days,
a few weeks, and obviously it's all the sturfing you high,
like some really important points. Those governors have issues in
their own state, you know, obviously Louisiana in terms of
you know, the outcomes, particularly for black folks, among other
things that Governor Lange is certainly not dealing with. But
this is going to get a lot worse before it
gets better. Roll in and need to be clear about
(38:32):
people watching this La DC. You've heard the President mention
other cities like Baltimore, chicagoa et cetera, who are experiencing
dramatic drops and violent crime, particularly murders. But this isn't
about that. This is about authoritarianism. This is about, you know,
also undercutting the advances that you've seen black folks and
(38:53):
women and other groups make over the last several years.
But these governors are just rougher stampingness and we have
to once it and those voters in those states have
to hold those individuals accountable. And we almost need folks
who are not members of our community they start speaking
up because eventually all this stuff that's rolling downhill and
disproportionately impacting the black folks and under minoritized groups. Is
going to impact everyone. It's coming for you eventually. So
(39:16):
those people who in those communities who don't speak up,
you don't want to wait six months to a year
when they're grabbing people off the street in your neighborhood
and then you start complaining. You better speak up now
because it's coming for everyone.
Speaker 1 (39:27):
And look, we know the idiots at foxdes and the
fools who work for Donald Trump. Look, they'll just be
a hypocrite. So this was eighteen months ago. Oh, trifling
lion ass white nationalists loving Sean Hannity. This is him
talking to Christy Gnom you know now, Ice Barbie about
the authority of the president to use a national guard.
Speaker 23 (39:51):
Watch these liars, the Republican governors, they all deserve credit
that stood by Governor Rabbits. If you didn't stand with
them in solidarity, I'm not sure. I'm not sure Biden
wouldn't have precipitated a real crisis down there.
Speaker 24 (40:09):
Yeah, Sean, I went the actual day that that showdown
was supposed to happen. People ask me why when I
heard the news, I immediately the next day was at
the border, and it was because of what I heard
Democrats encouraging the president to do They were encouraging President
Biden to activate our National Guard soldiers so that they
would stand down. He actually was going to take control
of our South Dakota National Guard and actually activate them
(40:33):
so that they would not protect America. So, recognizing the
real threat that was to state's rights and how that
would be the first time in history a president would
pay a soldier to not fight, to not protect our country,
made me show up in Texas the next day to
like Governor Abbott know I'm here.
Speaker 1 (40:48):
South Dakota is with you.
Speaker 24 (40:49):
We will defend our constitution, we will defend our rights
because the last several years we've seen the Democrats take
away our freedom.
Speaker 1 (40:56):
Of Yeah, okay, that's more. I'll let kind of crap,
but that a lot, that's all that is. Uh and
oh but see they didn't believe in that kind of
power when Bien was president, but they cool with that
food Trump being the Oval office. Kyler, you can take
(41:16):
that one. Yeah.
Speaker 18 (41:18):
Yeah, as we said, when they when they when they
do it, it's okay. But when we when when it
was done, it wasn't okay. And I think it signals
that when we see what's happening here in d C
and l A and sets of precedents that everywhere that
none of our communities are safe. It means, you know,
more profile and more harassment. It means a constant threat
of being stopped by police, being questioned just for existing.
(41:40):
I think that signals something, and I think that kind
of heavy handed policing isn't It doesn't make our community safe.
Speaker 7 (41:47):
It just deepens trauma, It erodes strusts.
Speaker 18 (41:49):
Just even even me walking the street today, I've seen
hs uh DA agents and FBI agents on our street.
Speaker 7 (41:57):
That doesn't give us safety.
Speaker 18 (42:00):
I think about the words of Pastor Haynes, who said
all of us are called to sacrifice something, and I
believe that we must sacrifice something in this moment to
stand up to authoritarism, because truth liberation requires the self
determination of DC's residents to have the autonomy of their
own city, and it requires all of us to stand
up to what's happening and ensure that our communities are safe.
Speaker 7 (42:22):
Because we make we make our community safe.
Speaker 1 (42:25):
And you can always mustaf and you can always count
on these done asses. At Fox News, UH chief idiot
Lawrence B. Jones Ainsley airhead Aaron Hard that's Sean Hannity's
side piece. Uh, and I don't know who this other
food is, you know, on the couch. But listen to
(42:47):
lion ass Trump, the Liary in chief, talked about, oh,
how restaurants in DC are just going doing gang busters.
Listen to this lie.
Speaker 25 (42:56):
Listen now doing something that happened, having such fun with
Because I'm helping people, I've made Washington, d C. A
just an incredible just an incredible place in literally four days.
I have friends that say they're going out to dinner.
Did you see what's happening with the restaurants at Bersley?
They were all closing and going bankrupt. I mean it
(43:19):
would be I mean it would be great. There's a
guy named Sean Hannity. He might take a very lovely
young lady that he knows very well to dinner.
Speaker 1 (43:28):
And dumb ass on the phone just lying. Well, here's
the problem. Steve Ratner posted this. This is a fact, y'all.
Of course, the idiots at Fox News they're too stupid
to actually fact check anything, but you see it right here.
Thirty percent restaurant reservations are down thirty percent in Washington,
(43:51):
d C. Because of what this fool has done. But
we know heal lie about a live Mustafa.
Speaker 10 (43:58):
Yeah, that's what he does. He's all about misinformation and disinformation.
We've highlighted on the show numerous times. You know, the
reality of the situation is is that they want to
destabilize these cities that are run by black mayors. And
that's just a part of the intentionality of the game.
If you've got law enforcement walking past you, you've got
tanks going by, you got folks with guns, you're not
(44:20):
wanting to sit outside underneath of an umbrella and have
dinner with loved ones. So they understand this dynamic. It
also goes along with the false narrative they're talking about
about crime, you know, which we all know is not true.
It's been going down, so you should be better supporting that.
But we also got to call into our conversation the
fact that when you look at places like Tennessee and
(44:40):
West Virginia which have had huge opioid crises, venting and
all these other types of things, then you have got
to ask the question, if you're going to send these individuals,
then who's doing the policing back home? And then who
is actually figuring out how those resources that have been
used for you to send folks over to DC, that
could have been used back in your respective states to
(45:03):
help people to heal, to address the education deficit, to
address the healthcare deficit that exists inside of those states.
Then not only are you impacting the folks in Washington,
d C. But you are also impacting the folks back
in your respective states. So you're using their tax dollars.
So you got a lot of explaining to do, not
only to the folks here in the District of Columbia,
(45:25):
but the people who also are inside of your states.
Speaker 1 (45:28):
Yeah, but see what this is all about. The show.
This is a TV show, Larry as all this is.
And so it's a television show. That's how he treats everything.
And the news media loves it because they've got old
humbies rolling behind in troops and they love it. And
they just keep making excuses for this tyrant, this dictator,
(45:50):
this liar in chief.
Speaker 17 (45:53):
Yeah, this is like a beast ride version of The
Apprentice in DC, not in New York, And folks I
care about it.
Speaker 1 (46:00):
Yeah, And we know who the chief. We know who's
the chief, We know who's the chief.
Speaker 17 (46:04):
Master Donald Trump you're right, and so I have friends,
very close friends, and other people I've talked to the
last couple of days Roland, who live in the city
or raising black children, adolessons, and they're scared. And you know,
this is is like you said, like a reality TV show,
but it is disportionately impacting black folks a majority black city.
(46:26):
And once again I go to back to my point.
Americans can sit around and you know, end like this
is nothing or it doesn't matter. It's off a far
off place and DC needs to be cleaned up. But
every community is going to be impacted about these these
kind of decisions for the next couple of years. But
we can't allow this to play out on like this,
like you said, some bad reality TV show that's on
to be We have to make sure that we hold
(46:48):
elected officials accountable. And then if you believe in democracy
and you have to fight for it, it's just not
The Constitutions is not a piece of paper, it's a
living document and if you don't defend it, this is
what happens as a released authoritary.
Speaker 1 (47:00):
Well what also happens when you got an idiot who
thinks that that was some upside to slavery. Ya. This
is a social media post that Donald Trump put out today.
Oh y'all gonna love this one. The museum throughout Washington,
but all over the country are essentially the last remaining
(47:21):
segment of woke. The Smithsonian is out of control. Where
everything discussed is how horrible our country is, how bad
slavery was, and how unaccomplished the down Troden that been.
Nothing about success, nothing about brightness, nothing about the future.
We're not going to love this to happen. And I
haven't instructed my attorneys to go through the museums and
(47:43):
start the exact same process that has been done with
cognitis and universities, where a tremendous progress has been made.
This country cannot be woke because woke is broke. We
have the hottest country in the world, and we want
people to talk about it, including in our museums. Interesting,
Tynick let mechtick with this line right here, where everything
discussed is how harbor our country is, how bad slavery was. Oh,
(48:07):
I get so. Is Donald Trump saying that there's a
flip side to slavery, how amazing it was?
Speaker 18 (48:16):
Yeah, he has to be very delusional, of which there's
nothing new here. But I think what he fears is
not history, but he fears the truth. And it's because
when the truth is taught, it empowers a new generation
of young people and folks to wake up and to
demand justice, to fight for liberation. And I think that's
why they ban books in our schools, That's why they
(48:37):
attack d and I that's why they try to control
what's happening in the schools because they understand if they
can adjust the minds of this new generation of young
voters who will fight for democracy and liberation.
Speaker 7 (48:51):
They know that if.
Speaker 18 (48:53):
They can take the power away from young white folks
to never confront their responsibilities, they feel they're growing somewhere.
But history is not there to rewrite our museums and
our classrooms and our community centers.
Speaker 7 (49:05):
They're special.
Speaker 18 (49:06):
And I think it's an important time such as this
to continue to stand up and if they're going to
try to dismount to our history, is more important for
us to make sure that our history is taught to
our young folks.
Speaker 1 (49:20):
Well, Larry, your professor, maybe this is the problem. Maybe
Donald Trump has spent been spending too much time watching
Praeger You Kids videos, where, according to this right wing
nutcase outfit. Slavery was really no big deal.
Speaker 3 (49:40):
At school that you spoiled paradise and you brought slavery
and murder to peaceful people.
Speaker 4 (49:45):
Leoh sorry, it's what I read and heard.
Speaker 19 (49:47):
At school, Garamba. Those are some accusations. The place I
discovered was beautiful, but it wasn't exactly a paradise of
civilization and the need if people were far from peaceful.
Speaker 4 (50:01):
But you just said that Tino were peaceful.
Speaker 19 (50:04):
They pretty much are. But there are other tribes who aren't.
The Taino I had met had cuts in scars and
bruises all over them. I asked why, and they told
me about the Caribs who are vicious, warring cannibals. Cannibals
like they eat people.
Speaker 1 (50:20):
See whoa right?
Speaker 19 (50:23):
Hey, All the things that are bad in the world
I come from. Jealousy, lying, murder, war, It all exists
in the land I just found. Two Ah, in Europe,
we draw the line at things like eating people and
human sacrifice. Some of the native folks from where I
just left do those things regularly. So these people in
(50:45):
your time you think it was a peaceful paradise are
misinformed or lying.
Speaker 4 (50:52):
Yeah, but what about slavery.
Speaker 1 (50:53):
You didn't deny that deny.
Speaker 19 (50:55):
No, slavery is as all as time and has taken
place in every corner of the world, even amongst the
people I just left. Being taken as a slave is
better than being killed. No, I don't see the problem.
Speaker 1 (51:09):
Well, in our time, weave slavery as being evil and terrible.
Speaker 19 (51:13):
Ah, magnifico, that's wonderful. I am glad humanity has reached
such a time. But you said you're from five hundred
years in the future. How can you come here to
the fifteenth century and judge me by your standards from
the twenty first century. For those in the future to
look back and do this is well ESTUPIDO.
Speaker 1 (51:34):
Are you calling me dumb? Certainly not.
Speaker 19 (51:38):
I can tell you're a very smart young lady. But
the idea of throwing away the past because of your
present values is Listen. I love and am thankful for
the ancient Greeks, but they did lots of things that
here in fourteen ninety three I do not agree with.
They permitted lifestyles and worshiped gods that as a Christian
(52:00):
I think is very bad. But that doesn't mean I
shouldn't respect and honor all the incredible and amazing things
they did.
Speaker 1 (52:08):
So good and bad is based on the time you
live in.
Speaker 19 (52:11):
That is a great question. I told you, I knew
you were smart. Some things are clearly bad no matter
when they happen. But for other things, before you judge,
you must ask yourself what did the culture and society
at the time treat as no big deal?
Speaker 1 (52:31):
See, Larry, I want people to pay attention to this,
So prager you right wingers. And this content is being
used in Florida schools, Texas, and this is the content
Republicans want to replace PBS with. So they're there this
Christmaer Columbus character. Oh he disagrees with all these other
(52:55):
things because I'm a Christian. Uh oh, but you didn't
disagree with slavery and how heinous that was. And you
see what they're trying to do. They're trying to say, oh, no,
these things were not bad. You can't judge me according
to those times. Well, there were actually people who were
alive then who thought it was heinous as well. This
(53:17):
is the kind of content that Republican billionaires are funding,
and they want to infiltrate into every school nationwide. So
when these right wingers talk about, oh, the left, they're
infiltrating our school, They're indoctrinating our kids. This is right
wing in doctrination, you.
Speaker 17 (53:39):
Know, Roland, I remember time when the Republicans didn't believe
that the federal government shouldn't get involved in the state
of local affairs. But that time apparently is over once
you get in power. The other thing is, I've been
watching Pray to You for a number of years and
watch them grow from state to state Florida, Oklahoma, et cetera.
And now you see conversations at the federal level, like
you talked about getting rid of PBS and use as
(54:00):
some kind of replacement. And so we got to call
us for what it is, and that is a whitewashing
of the history as it relates to my ancestors and
money many of other panelists here, my enslaved as African ancestors,
and I'm not going to sit around and tolerate it.
We can't pretend like black folks weren't for centuries even
after you know, you know past you know, thirteen fourteen
(54:22):
fifty Amendment, were you know, past Jim Crow. In terms
of how black folks will continue brutalized rapes of black women, murder,
lynchings during Jim Crow. We can't act like that didn't happen,
and I refuse a lot of it happened, and it's
going to be really important for those who believe in
once again injustice and talking about history and understanding what
that means for the future. Make sure that we can't
(54:43):
allow preger in the other these you know, disinformation platforms
to gain popularity.
Speaker 1 (54:49):
And mustafa for all the simple signons who were saying, man,
y'all is chilling for the Democrats, y'all, God accept this too.
See that's what's amazing. We tried to warn people. See
I'm wearing a sure fafo. We got the new one
faffo product crossed out twenty twenty five. We kept warning people,
(55:11):
but see, you got a bunch of these loud mouth
folks on YouTube and others who had all this smoke
for Democrats. And this is a kind of crap that
these right wingers want in every school in the country
that I keep telling people. They hated the fact that
real history was being learned by white kids instead of
history and they want a history returned.
Speaker 10 (55:35):
Yeah, you know, not only did we try and warn you.
We were trying to protect you because many of us
knew what was coming, so we did what we could.
But unfortunately, there were a whole lot of folks who
looked like us. There were some folks who looked like
us who were doing everything that they could to also
change the narrative of what really was going to play out.
Speaker 1 (55:55):
You know, it's really.
Speaker 10 (55:56):
Interesting when I see those types of things, because you know,
they want to try demonize indigenous brothers and sisters, whether
it than in the Islands or other places, but they
don't want to tell the story about the dark Ages
in Europe and all of the very incredulous things that
were happening in that space. They also don't want to
talk about Larry touched on it, the sex trafficking that
(56:16):
was happening in relationship to slavery. You know, also the
rapes that were happening as a part of slavery, the
brutalization that was happening as a part of slavery, the
fourteen hour work days in the sun, not being paid
and having very little to eat or drink part of slavery.
So they never want to tell the truth about it.
And that's the reason they're trying to take over the
(56:37):
educational systems. They're trying to whitewash history, which is nothing new.
We've seen it time and time again. And then I
also hear sometimes brothers and sisters saying, well, you know,
they can teach your children whatever they want to teach them,
but you forget that same information is also being pumped
into the minds of our children, our nieces and nephews
(56:59):
and our sons. And so we need to make sure
that we are getting engaged in this process because these
are long term effects, these are cumulative effects of the
steps that these folks are doing. So I hope that
folks are awake, and I hope that you are now
willing to actually get engaged in solidarity to push back
(57:19):
on this and then to reverse you know, these very
devilish things that these folks are doing.
Speaker 1 (57:25):
Indeed, indeed, all right, going to a break, we come back.
We're going to talk about breast cancer's breast cancer, it's
impact on African American women. We'll also talk about how
why his right wingers so mad at Gavin Newsom because
he's trolling Donald Trump using the same stuff Trump does.
Plus marketplace segment and Spike Lee talks about his new

On the next Get Wealthy with Me Deborah Owens, America's
wealth coach. Black Americans have one tenth the wealth of
their white counterparts.
Speaker 1 (58:28):
But how do we get here?
Speaker 4 (58:30):
It's a huge gap.
Speaker 26 (58:32):
Well, that's why we need to know the history and
what we need to do to turn our income into wealth.
Speaker 27 (58:38):
Financial author and journalist Rodney Brooks joins us to tell
us exactly what we need to do to achieve financial success.
Speaker 28 (58:47):
You can't talk about why we are as black people
where we are unless you talk about.
Speaker 26 (58:52):
How we got here, bridging the gap and getting wealthy.
Only on Black Star Network, you're doing my name.
Speaker 1 (59:03):
Is Luckherrot and you're watching Roland Martin unfiltered deep into
it like pasteurized milk without the dup percent.
Speaker 7 (59:12):
We're getting deep.
Speaker 1 (59:14):
Do you want to turn that shit off? We're doing
an interview with Mother Buck. Black women of forty one
(59:35):
percent more likely to do from breast cancer than white women,
even though white women get breast cancer at a higher rate.
We also are seeing massive changes on the federal level
when it comes to healthcare as well, and so the
question is what is the cutback and research things along
those lines, how's that going to impact Black women? Ricky
Fairley jonesas right now. Of course she is with a
(59:59):
nonprofit it deals with this issue of breast cancer. Of course,
one of the initiatives is when we trial pushing for
more focused research and greater inclusion. Ricky, glad to have
you here, But Ricky, here's the problem. You got an
attack on DEI all across the corporations. You got Donald
Trump in this administration, and so these folks don't give
(01:00:19):
a damn about inclusion. What could the impact be on
black women since they're cutting cutting in such areas as
research in so many different areas on a federal level.
Speaker 29 (01:00:31):
You know, Roland, I am like the product of a
clinical trial. So I you know, I had triple negative
breast cancer, which black women get at three times the
rate of white women. And we now know that a
black breast cancer cell looks different from a white breast
cancer cell, and all the drugs and therapies we have
were made on white cells. And so clinical trials are
(01:00:52):
critical to help black women stay alive. I did a
clinical trial. My doctor had given me two years to live.
I did a clinical trial. It saved my life. I'm
now on You're thirteen, and so it's imperative that we
do the research.
Speaker 19 (01:01:05):
The good news here is, though.
Speaker 29 (01:01:06):
Even though the government is acting crazy, the pharmaceuticals companies
their lifeblood is drugs, and so they have really stepped up.
And I have to say, I'm up at Marvic's vineyard
now and I have support doing an event for black health,
and I have support for pretty may much all the
farmer companies making breast cancer drugs because they have stepped
up to the plate and they're committed to doing the
(01:01:29):
work that we need them to do and getting black
women into trials.
Speaker 1 (01:01:32):
Okay, so okay, well you say the community to the
trust doing that. What are they doing? How are they
reaching out? Are they advertising, are they promoting? What are
they doing to increase the number of Black women in
clinical trials?
Speaker 29 (01:01:47):
They're bringing me in, They're bringing us in, They're bringing
in advocacy groups. So I actually work for most of
the farmer companies to help them recruit black women. My
whin We trial campaign that we launched now four years
ago Roland, we've signed up twenty eight thousand, five hundred
and sixty two black women into our clinical trial portal
as of last Monday, and so I work with them.
(01:02:08):
I've helped them make the marketing materials, you know, that's
my background. We help them. We provide twenty four to
seven nurse navigation. Our navigators are all black women who
have had breast cancer, who are nurses and social workers,
and we provide these support support vehicles to the pharma company.
So they're basically hiring us to bring us in to
(01:02:29):
help them find the black women and recruit with them.
Speaker 1 (01:02:31):
We say at twenty eighth we say a twenty eight thousand,
what's the target.
Speaker 29 (01:02:34):
Goal twenty eight thousand. You know, it's hard to say
because we don't know. We don't even know what the
right goal is. Right now, we have about three percent
participation in clinical trials, but no one at the FDA
can even tell me what that number is. What is
the raw number attached to that three percent? We don't know,
and it's never enough. But the average trial right now
for breast cancer is about four percent. The trials that
(01:02:55):
we're working on, we're getting them up to twelve and
fifteen percent by helping them recruit. So that's most of
the work that we do right now. It's helping pharma
recruit women. And we work with about eighty two doctors
across the country on collegists who are doing trials. We
bring these doctors to the pharma company saying, here's how
you recruit black women. Here's where they are, here's where
you find them. You're not going to find them in Idaho.
(01:03:17):
You're going to find them in Atlanta. You're not going
to find them in Phoenix. You're going to find them
in DC and Chicago. And we work with doctors in
these cities where we know we can find them, and
we have support groups in all of these cities to
support the doctors that are trying to recruit women into
the trials. But it's a huge effort.
Speaker 7 (01:03:35):
It's huge.
Speaker 29 (01:03:35):
It's a huge effort. It takes a lot of money
and time and energy. But it's the most important thing
we can do because right now, if you're under forty
and you get triple negative breast cancer, which most women
are getting at that age, the best vehicle you can
the best treatment plan you can have, is a clinical trial,
because we know that the drugs aren't.
Speaker 1 (01:03:53):
Working for us.
Speaker 29 (01:03:54):
They didn't work for me, and they're not working for
a lot of people. Black women under thirty five get
breast cancer at twice the rate of white women and
are dying at three times the rate. Forty percent of
black women with triple negative breast cancer are under forty,
well before they would have that first mammogram. But the
research has to happen, and we're going to have to find,
by any means necessary, a way to do it without
(01:04:14):
the government. So farm companies are really stepping.
Speaker 1 (01:04:17):
Up, all right, So somebody out there will just sign up,
where do they go?
Speaker 7 (01:04:22):
Excuse me, if.
Speaker 1 (01:04:23):
Somebody out there watching or listening, wants to sign up?
Speaker 29 (01:04:25):
Where do they go when we trial dot org, when
wetrial dot org, or they can just email me, Ricky
Riicki at touch BBCA dot org. We will help you,
We will guide you, We will find you at trial.
We will get you the care that you need and
will support you with nurse navigation from a blessed you,
from a woman who's had lived experience with you and
can help you walk through the rock, through the process
(01:04:47):
and help.
Speaker 4 (01:04:48):
You through it.
Speaker 1 (01:04:49):
All right, Ricky, we still appreciate it. Thanks a lot,
Thank you, Roland.
Speaker 29 (01:04:52):
Good to talk to you.
Speaker 1 (01:04:53):
All right, folks, going to a quick break. We come
back time for our marketplace segment, new product in ours
job black Star Network Marketplace. That's next back in the moment.
Speaker 14 (01:05:05):
This week on the other side of change, three hundred
thousand black women being pushed out of the workforce.
Speaker 7 (01:05:10):
This is shocking yet unsurprising.
Speaker 20 (01:05:11):
Well, what happens when a bunch of black mothers use
their federal job.
Speaker 10 (01:05:15):
Their kids are not being.
Speaker 20 (01:05:16):
Fed, their kids are not being taken care of. But
that tu goes down to the entire community structure, which
may be built on the backs of black mothers and
black women whore.
Speaker 11 (01:05:25):
Broadly tune in on the other side of change only
on the Blackstar Network.
Speaker 6 (01:05:31):
On the next Get Wealthy with Me, Deborah Owen's America's
Wealth Coach. Black Americans have one tenth the wealth of
their white counterparts.
Speaker 1 (01:05:41):
But how do we get here? It's a huge gap.
Speaker 19 (01:05:45):
Well, that's why we.
Speaker 4 (01:05:46):
Need to know the history and what we need to
do to turn our.
Speaker 10 (01:05:50):
Income into wealth.
Speaker 27 (01:05:51):
Financial author and journalist Rodney Brooks joins us to tell
us exactly what we need to do to achieve financial success.
Speaker 28 (01:06:00):
Talk about why we are as black people where we

Speaker 26 (01:06:06):
Bridging the gap and getting wealthy. Only on Black Star Network.
Speaker 21 (01:06:15):
Now that Roland Martin is ruling to give me the blueprint,
past O Rise, I need to go to Tyler Perry
get another blueprint because I need some green money.
Speaker 1 (01:06:24):
The only way I can do what I'm doing.
Speaker 7 (01:06:26):
I need to make your money.
Speaker 1 (01:06:27):
So you'll see me.
Speaker 7 (01:06:28):
Working with Roland.
Speaker 21 (01:06:29):
Matter of fact, it's a Roland Martin and sharlandon show.
What it should be the show US Show and Roland Show.
But whatever show it's gonna be, it's gonna be good.
Speaker 1 (01:06:50):
Folks, you've been on social media. Boy, in California, Governor
Gaven news has really been trolling Donald Trump.
Speaker 15 (01:06:56):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:06:57):
He's been posting these tweets using all all caps in
almost the same language as Trump. And oh boy, Fox
News big mad, they real big mad. So Dana Perino
of the Five Boys, she was just mad at him.
And it's just foaming at the bouth. Watch this good
thing is or at the debate.
Speaker 30 (01:07:17):
The other thing for me is that for the last week,
Gavin Newsom and why am I giving him advice? You
had to stop it with the twitter thing. I don't
know where his wife is. If I wrote his wife,
I would say, what you are making a fool of yourself.
Speaker 1 (01:07:33):
Stop it.
Speaker 4 (01:07:34):
Do not let your staff tweet.
Speaker 30 (01:07:36):
And if you're doing it yourself, put the phone away
and start over. And if you he's got a big
job as governor of California, but if he wants an
even bigger job, he has to be a little bit
more serious.
Speaker 1 (01:07:45):
I'm confused. So she's I'm confused. So I'm sorry. Did
I hear that right? Oh my god, he's got a
big job. He should be doing these things. Play that
bad for the people who miss that The good thing
is or at the debate.
Speaker 30 (01:08:03):
The other thing for me is that for the last week,
Gavin Newsom, and why am I giving him advice? You
had to stop it with the twitter thing. I don't
know where his wife is. If I wrote his wife,
I would say, what you are making a fool of yourself.
Speaker 1 (01:08:19):
Stop it.
Speaker 4 (01:08:20):
Do not let your staff tweet.
Speaker 30 (01:08:22):
And if you're doing it yourself, put the phone away
and start over.
Speaker 1 (01:08:25):
And if you want.
Speaker 30 (01:08:26):
He's got a big job as governor of California, but
if he wants an even bigger job, he has to
be a little bit more serious.
Speaker 1 (01:08:32):
Okay, So Gavin and his team responded with this tweet.
I thought this was genius right here. Now pull up
the full tweet, the full tweet from his people. Okay,
thank you, show that. Well, let's go. I love this here.
Dana ding Dong Pirno never heard of her until today,
is melting down because of me, Gavin C. Newsom. Fox.
(01:08:54):
Fox hates that I am America's most favorite governor, ratings
King Saving America about Trump. Canny even conquered the big
stays on Air Force one anymore. Trump has lost his
step and Fox is losing it because when I type
America now wins. Thank you for your teaching this matter. Tyler.
What's crazy is she's saying that Gavin Newsom has a
(01:09:14):
big job, yet Trump does the same bullshit, his job
is bigger. I mean, so what this means is what
Gavin Newsom is doing is working.
Speaker 7 (01:09:28):
Absolutely, it's definitely working.
Speaker 18 (01:09:29):
And I get a joy out of seeing someone match
Trump's energy because I think oftentimes we get we get
comfortable with comfortability politics of always taken the high road.
But now it's become, as you said earlier, when when
they go low, we go lower. And so I love
seeing it. But also also I would even say, you know,
(01:09:49):
I don't want this to drown out away from the
things that are happening in our faces.
Speaker 7 (01:09:55):
But I think it's definitely a joy to see somebody
going to toe for toe.
Speaker 1 (01:09:59):
But but but but it's not drowning it. But it's
not drowning it out because again, I think it is
important what he's doing. I think you have to get
what did we say, when they go lower, you go lower? Okay,
you want to be petty, I'll show you petty and
guess what, Tyler. Ever since Gavin Newsom started doing this,
the last three or four days, Trump ain't posted in
(01:10:19):
all caps. Oh it's getting under his skin. But the
fact that Fox News is whining and complaining about it
when Trump he was literally mocking Trump shows you how
stupid they are.
Speaker 7 (01:10:36):
Yeah, absolutely, I could I could agree more.
Speaker 18 (01:10:39):
And I think it also it brings more folks into
the conversation too, and I think you know they're they're
more eager to know what's what's happening. But definitely shout
out to Governor Newson and his team for holding the
line and making the fool making the fool of Trump.
Speaker 1 (01:10:55):
But here's the other thing, Larry, and this is important.
Trump has used social media to drive the network news narrative.
So what newsom is doing is saying, oh, okay, you
know what, I'm gonna do the flip, I'm gonna do
the inverse. I'm gonna do the exact same thing and
now and not. The fact that Fox was talking about
it shows you is working. That's what people don't understand. See,
(01:11:17):
this is folk gotta understand. These media people there are
suck ups. Okay, they're sinkle fans. Okay, they're easy. How
about this one here? Okay, Kid Rock all Kid Rock
is so upset. Remember Kid Rock put out that poster,
then what to say using AI kid Rock wants you
to support Gavin Newsom all Larry kid Rock is pissed off,
(01:11:38):
and the dumb ass doesn't even realize that Newsom is
in his team. They're just being petty.
Speaker 17 (01:11:46):
Sat tired. That basically the using all they're doing is
is forcing the look in the mirror. That's the bottom
wind folder.
Speaker 1 (01:11:52):
That's what they don't like.
Speaker 17 (01:11:54):
You know, we get these constant capitalization and misspelled you know, crazy,
you know, truth or whatever they're called, on a daily
basis every day, you know, every day, every week, throughout
the month, and so for the next, for the last
several months, and so once again, when you take a
mirror and force the look at it, they don't like it.
But and the idea of them contradicting themselves, you know,
(01:12:16):
her talking about you know, what's he doing? He's got
a big job. Trump's president in the United States. I mean,
what is he doing sending these you know, these these
tweets out or whatever you want to call them. We
just talked about the one relating to slavery. I mean
that makes absolutely no historical and there's no practical sense
in terms of, you know, dismissing what Slavey's all about.
(01:12:36):
But we've had to deal with this not only for
this term, but for the previous term. So if anyone
should be tired, it should be people like me constantly
dealing with this, spouts.
Speaker 1 (01:12:46):
I think it's brilliant, Mustafa, because again, here's the greatest
problem with Democrats today. They keep trying to operate in
a political world that no longer exists. Oh no, I'm
not doing those things. That's beneath me. Whatever. No, they
(01:13:07):
don't understand the world we're now living in. They don't
understand the social media world they're now living in. This
is a brilliant way to combat the idiocy of the
liar in cheap, the twice impeached, criminally convicted con man
Donald Trump.
Speaker 10 (01:13:27):
Yeah, I'm right there with you because I appreciate great strategy.
You know, Newsen said you want to flex, let's flex,
and he said, I'm gonna do it better than you.
You know, he made sure that he's braggadocious. He made
sure that you know, he's actually more like the meme
than Trump is. You know, I've only met him a
couple of times, you know, he's a tall man. Some folks,
(01:13:47):
you know, like the way he looks, so forth and
so on, so they play that up inside the memes.
Then on the other side of the equation you got Trump,
you know, knocking on a real high number, overweight, all
the different times things. But yet he used those means
to try and make him seem like he was a
great American hero. So Newsom just flipped it on him.
So you shouldn't be mad. Game recognize game. And that's
(01:14:10):
the problem is that, like you said, you know, democrats
want to play this very you know, antiquated set of
actions and games and those different types of things, and that's.
Speaker 1 (01:14:20):
Not what time it is.
Speaker 10 (01:14:21):
You got to be willing to throw it up. You've
got to be able to use whatever the new technology is,
and you got to make sure that people know. Since
this society seems to love whoever yells the loudest and
whoever says I'm the best, he's making sure that he
does that. And then of course he'll have to be
able to back it up with his record. But you know,
they have an effective strategy right now, and that's why
other people are shook.
Speaker 1 (01:14:42):
Tyler. I love this here, Donald Taco Trump, as many
call him, missed the deadline. California will now draw new,
more beautiful maps. They will be historic as they will
end the Trump presidency. DIMS take back the House. Big
press conference this week with powerful dims and GAVI some
your favorite governor that will be devastating from MAGA. Thank
(01:15:04):
you for your attention to this matter. Gn I mean,
that's that's.
Speaker 28 (01:15:08):
How you do this.
Speaker 7 (01:15:11):
Exactly. Look.
Speaker 18 (01:15:11):
I saw somebody in your in your comments, they say
when they go low, we dig for oil. So shout
out to shout out to them. I saw the couple
cross and I think that sums it up. And I
even saw the new name for uh, the Press secretary
to always line livit.
Speaker 7 (01:15:26):
So, I mean I'm looking for.
Speaker 1 (01:15:28):
It, like I love these. They're mocking his shoes. Look
at this boy. This this is awesome. All right, that's
pretty cool. So check this out. Okay, here's another good
one right here. They're putting Newsome on the amount rushmore. Okay,
that's how you do it. That's how you do it.
All right. I'm gonna pull up I'm gonna pull up
(01:15:50):
another one that I saw. I'm trying to find a photo.
Oh I love this one. Here Okay, look at this here, y'all.
This is newsome. And and then they posted this here.
Here are three men who all claim to be six
three and two and twenty pounds. See Mustava right there.
See Mustapha broke right then? Stop Trump with his pants
(01:16:15):
damned to pull up to his chest. I mean, come on, y'all,
that this is what you do. You mocked the idiot.
That's what you do. You make fun of him. Remember
it drove him crazy when Obama did that at the
White House, cors fun his dinner. Okay, okay, here's another one.
Here's another one right here. They've been posting just I'm
(01:16:38):
telling you it drives I mean, remember when Trump came
when he came clue into California and Newso met his
ass at the airport. Matter of fact, this is a tweet,
you'll see it right here. This was the deal where
he wasn't invited. Newsen was like, what the hell y'all
gonna stop the governor of California going to the tarmac. Dude,
(01:17:00):
that's how you have to Matchine Larry. You gotta say,
come on, punk, let's go.
Speaker 17 (01:17:07):
Yeah, you gotta to mention earlier. But Democrats focused too
much on decorum. This is an example a newsom saying
I'm gonna bring the same smoke, and that's what you
have to do, and that's the only way we can
we can we can push back on all this all
this nonsense Roland. And like I said, the wrest of these,
you know, democrats are just kind of want to play
back and be reactionary. We're new soonar what he's doing
(01:17:28):
is he's constantly poking the poking the bear, and just
to let him know that, you know.
Speaker 1 (01:17:34):
I'm here.
Speaker 17 (01:17:35):
Obviously we know he wants to are president. Let's let's
let's be clear about that. But I think the bottom
line is his social media team, their strategies has been
excellent and also he's done it just a good job
in terms of his press conferences and you know, once
again highlighting the important role California plays in the state.
And also, like I said, keep keep jabbing Trump over
what we know he's got to, you know, some things
(01:17:58):
that make him angry. So it'll be interesting to see
how just continues to play out. But like I said,
I think there's a lady that's in charge of a
social media team, So congrats to her for really doing
a great job and once again forcing the administration and
looking on there.
Speaker 1 (01:18:11):
Okay, I don't know if they're mocking. I don't know
if they're I don't know if Gavin Newson actually shit
this one out, Mustafa, but they're mocking him. Say, there
was a ketchup on us, you know, Donald Trump puts
ketchup on everything. Uh, And so they're using uh that
was the the assassination to timp photo.
Speaker 12 (01:18:29):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:18:29):
And they're like, Okay, we're gonna give it to you. Okay,
you want to play games. Trump wants to have nicknames,
he wants to trash everybody. Newson was like, okay, player,
I'm gonna warn up you every single time. I agree
with this. I endorse this method, Mustafa one hundred percent.
Speaker 10 (01:18:47):
Yeah, he got somebody on his team who actually grew
up in hip hop because you see it reflected and
how you know they keep punching folks, how they also
keep uplifting who he is and building the narrative around him.
Maybe somebody came from poitry slams and knowing how to
go toe for toe on these different types of things.
But it's effective, right, and it is what you know
many in our country are actually looking for, you know,
(01:19:10):
on the Democratic side of the ticket. You know, folks
are looking for a fighter, right. We know our sister
Jasmine Crockett be giving them all they want, but we
also know that he is now, you know, doing some
very similar types of things. So they've got an effective strategy.
They should ride it until they don't work no more.
And they should make sure that you know, they're just
making sure folks understand that ain't nobody just gonna lay
(01:19:30):
down and let you do all this silly stuff and
not call it out in a way that is funny,
in a way that is educational, in a way that
is effective.
Speaker 1 (01:19:37):
Absolutely. All right, y'all, quick break, we come back top
of our marketplace segment right here, rolling nonfiltered on the
Blackstart Network.
Speaker 22 (01:19:49):
Hello, I'm Isaac's, the third founder and CEO of fan Base.
Listen to what I'm about to tell you. The window
to invest in fan Base is closing. We've raised over
ten point six million of our seventeen million dollar goal.
That means there's room for less than six thousand, three
hundred and seventy people to invest in Fanbase for the
average amount. The minimum to invest in Fanbase right now,
(01:20:11):
is three hundred and ninety nine dollars that makes you
an owner in fan Base today. Go to start Engine
dot com slash fan Base to invest. Why because current
social apps have taken advantage of users for far too
long with content suppression, shadow banning, homeful, racist content, and
no real tools for monetization and equity. Fan Base has
over one point four million users in counting, allowing anyone
(01:20:33):
to reach all their following and monetize their content from
day one. Social media is the new TV, and whoever
owns an app to distribute that content have the opportunity
to own potential billion dollar companies. While big platforms with
certain futures are failing to serve their users, fan Base
is stepping up to fill the gap. Don't wait until
it's too late, invest now. Invest for yourself and your future.
(01:20:57):
Go to start Engine dot com slash fan Base and
own the next generation of social media.
Speaker 19 (01:21:08):
I'm Russell L. Honore lieutend At Gerald, United States, Sorrow retired,
and you're watching Roland Martin.
Speaker 1 (01:21:14):
I'm Celtic.
Speaker 25 (01:21:19):
Y'all.
Speaker 1 (01:21:19):
Remember during the election when Donald Trump jd Vance were
attacking the Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio. Well, y'all. Guess
what now, The people in Springfield are concerned because they
may now suffer. You know, Donald Trump wants to end
the temporary Protected status for Haitian immigrants. There's some three
hundred and fifty thousand Haitians in the United States. Well,
(01:21:43):
the people in Springfield now say their town could be devastated.
It could devastate businesses, housing, and the job sector. Faith
groups are stepping up. They're mobilizing to protect the Haitian neighbors,
pushing back on deep importations and urging, urging Trump folks
to keep these legal protections in place. Obviously, I believe,
(01:22:09):
absolutely positively Mustafa that temporary protective status should stay placed. Well,
let me be real cut, I don't know, let me
real clear. If they choose to lift the temporary protected status.
All I have for Springfield, Ohio, a city that was
losing population, losing people, had vacant homes. All I have
(01:22:35):
for y'all are thoughts and prayers, because y'all let jd
Vance and Donald Trump do this and scare those folks.
So if your town tanks suck it.
Speaker 10 (01:22:50):
Nes facts. I mean, you know, I've been to Springfield
before I had a chance to talk to some of
the folks. You know, the Haitian community there plays an
incredible role. So first of all, the people I talked
to didn't have anything negative to say. They said that,
you know, the folks were great citizens that you know,
that they were playing a significant role and helping to
make sure that the culture was strong, that the economics
(01:23:12):
were strong, all these different types of things. There were
nothing but accolades that people shared. And what Trump does
is he destroys economies, whether there are economies on the
local level, you know, on the larger state level of
course on the federal level, because they don't think through
when you have these these hateful sets of policies that
are not really truly evaluating what does someone bring to
(01:23:33):
the mix, and you just do this bigoted stuff, then
there are repercussions for that. So Haitians have choices, right
if they don't want to stay here and continue to
do the jobs that many of other folks didn't want
to do, and as they continue to actually help to
strengthen the housing market, you know, they can go to
Canada and they'll be welcome there and they'll have plenty
of opportunity that exists there. So We hope that that
(01:23:56):
folks continue to protect them. Make sure that you know
that we see that they are valuable citizens, and you
know that we continue to move forward in a direction
that looks like the twenty first century and not something
from the eighteenth century.
Speaker 25 (01:24:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:24:09):
See all these dumbasses, Larry. See this is what happens
when you FAFO. See. Okay, Ohio, they voted for Trump.
Your county is about to be screwed. Nebraska, they voted
for Trump. The governor called him beggar. Please end these
ice arrest because they're killing our farmers. Our gross domestic
(01:24:33):
product in Nebraska's down six percent. Look at Las Vegas
AP says that three point one million tourers. It was
eleven percent drop compared to the same month of twenty
twenty four. International travels down thirteen percent, hotel occimacy down
fifteen percent. But Nevada, you voted for him. Again, thoughts
(01:24:54):
and prayers.
Speaker 17 (01:24:58):
This is a problem that propaganda doesn't match economic reality.
And so a lot of these rough belt states somebody
you describe, and some of these other states in the
West and various other states are finding out when you
when you vote based on propaganda and not economic reality,
then you're going to face some serious hardships. And listen,
roan a lot of these challenges that relates to inflation
and you know, uh, these are these local areas and
(01:25:22):
states suffering from you know, their growth to make product dropping.
Speaker 1 (01:25:26):
This is just just the beginning.
Speaker 17 (01:25:29):
As they continue to attack more communities and deport more
folks and you know, more federal workers, those jobs, those
those those economies are going to get a lot worse.
And then they've eliminated social safety net, which people voted
for also, So in terms of you know, some of
the challenges they're dealing with, now this is the tip
of the iceberg. It's going to get. Like I said,
things a going to get far more difficult. So when
(01:25:49):
you mistreat people, don't see their humanity and they and
they are make a plus effort in terms of what
they bring to the to your economy, and then you
turn your back on them.
Speaker 31 (01:25:59):
This is what you get.
Speaker 1 (01:26:00):
Yeah, I mean, toy. Bottom line is you know that
they went for this crap. They failed for the okie doe.
Uh and and this is this is what's going on.
Speaker 15 (01:26:10):
Uh Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:26:11):
This was a this was a tweet right here from
Congressman Steven Horsford formerture of the black caukers. Las Vegas
thrives on tourism under Trump. Uh. Canadian and Mexico visitors
make up fifty three percent of all US travers. Flight
bookings are plummeting. US term is down twelve percent and
the vile is down eight percent. Canada's airlines are cutting
Vegas flights.
Speaker 13 (01:26:31):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:26:32):
He testified about this. Let me go ahead and play
this here, give me one second, I'm gonna I'm gonna
play this audio.
Speaker 32 (01:26:38):
This is what he said to ask Senator kind of sorrow,
particularly because thirty percent of Southern Nevada's jobs.
Speaker 10 (01:26:50):
Are in hospitality.
Speaker 32 (01:26:52):
They generate over eighty billion dollars of economic activity. Unfortunately,
these blanket tariffs have alienated two of our most important
trading partners, Canada and Mexico. And the facts for themselves,
they speak for themselves. It's down eight point seven percent
just among international travel alone.
Speaker 1 (01:27:13):
Yes or no?
Speaker 32 (01:27:15):
Have you heard from local business owners who are suffering
due to the downturn in our tourism economy?
Speaker 4 (01:27:23):
Thank you for the person very quickly, Congressman.
Speaker 1 (01:27:26):
Yes, okay, now David, Yeah, y'all getting screwed. They getting screwed,
and I'm just sitting there Tyler going, Hey, that's what happens.
Y'all chose that, pump, y'all chose that, liar. He's just
showing the economy. And I'm gonna tell you right now,
the Olympics, these international people ain't coming to that, the
World Cup, they ain't coming to that because Trump and
(01:27:49):
his ice people are going to be harassing people. They
have not. They did a lot of ben as a
Whalen baseball team to come, the single league basketball team
to come. They've been shutting down list. I'm telling you
right now, if I am an international traveler, there is
no way in hell I would come to the United
States for the Olympics, for the World Cup or anything
(01:28:10):
because you are guaranteed to be harassed by Trump's thugs. Yeah.
Speaker 18 (01:28:16):
Absolutely, And I think it's it continues to show around
the world how, you know, disadministration views folks that are
that are not from America.
Speaker 7 (01:28:25):
And even even we go back to what's happening and.
Speaker 18 (01:28:31):
With our Haitian brothers and sisters, it just proves you
know what what what immigration, Immigrant communities often you know
feel and already know that America runs on our labor,
what treat our lives as things that something that's disposable.
And I would even say, you know, the fight for
civil rights, it goes hand in hand with the fight
(01:28:52):
for just immigration. And we must prioritize what pathways the
citizenship looks like. We prioritize, you know, the communities that's
impacted by what's happening with this administration. And I'll even say,
even how do we shift the narrative around immigration to
be more inclusive of black immigrants from the diaspora. It's
(01:29:14):
going to be important because oftentimes black folks are left
out out of the immigration conversation. But situations such as
this reminds us of how critical it is to ensure
that that pathway to the re clitizenship is.
Speaker 7 (01:29:29):
You know, it's highlighted.
Speaker 1 (01:29:30):
But here's the thing that I have always said, Larry,
I have consistently said, you gotta hit rock bottom. I said,
you gotta have things tank, you gotta see things go
to hell. And guess what all them dumb asses in Kentucky.
(01:29:52):
That's exactly what they are feeling right now. Bottom line
is this is a piece right here.
Speaker 6 (01:30:00):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:30:00):
You got these uh in Kentucky, these whiskey distill, the
steelers filing bankruptcy, having issues. We see what's happening with
Uncle nearest. Uh, their financial issues. But guess what, You've
got millions of Kentucky whiskey just wasting away on the
shelves and warehouses because the Canadians are like, nah, y'all
(01:30:24):
can keep that crap and you can thank Trump for it.
So another red state economy being destroyed by the dumb
ass in chief, Donald Trump.
Speaker 17 (01:30:34):
Yeah, you talked about Kentucky and whiskey, and I saw
the report. Uh it was Canadian newscasts and they talked
about you know Canadians, you know, the government and certainly
even before the terriffs really kicked in some whiskey it
was delivered there that Canadian said, we're not buying this
just made in the United States. So they're going to
be Like I said, people voted, voted for their own demises.
(01:30:56):
I like to tell folks, which you know, it's just
like the worst set self owned in world history to
vote for this tariffs, you know, in terms of how
they treat undocumented people, laying off federal workers, you know,
are healthare healthcare, infrastructure, all this stuff collapsing at the
same time.
Speaker 1 (01:31:13):
And I'll go back to my point again.
Speaker 17 (01:31:15):
In the past, and we had the last recession, you know,
under George Bush Junior, we had certain programs in place
to support Americas. Those programs aren't around anymore. So folks
who voted for this, they're going to feed it feel it,
particularly in these rural communities and other underserved communities that
thought this was in their best interest. But you like
Kentucky and some of these other you know, states that
(01:31:35):
don't have a lot of wealth, are going to fill
this proportion. THU the economic impact. And like I said,
we're just things are just getting started. They're gonna be
far wars by the end of the y.
Speaker 1 (01:31:43):
Last point here, Mustafa, I just love this chart right here.
Top ten spirits exporting states Tennessee, Kentucky. This is to
the EU Tennessee, Kentucky, Florida, Texas, Illinois, Indiana, California, are
going to sign New York, Georgia.
Speaker 25 (01:31:59):
M.
Speaker 1 (01:32:00):
Red Red, Red, Red red seven other ten of red states. Okay,
y'all about to fa fo when it comes to the Europeans,
and y'all in y'all spirit sales. But that dumb ass
sitting in the White House. Oh yeah, he don't care.
But all of them, all them red states, all of
them broke as white people. Y'all about to be at
(01:32:24):
the jobs. Oh guess what, uneplombing ain't gonna be good
for you because they cutting that. Oh guess what, you're
gonna need some staff benefits. Yeah, they cutting that. Well,
I be damn. You gonna need some health care and
they're cutting that.
Speaker 10 (01:32:39):
Yeah, that's social safety that is gone. It's gone for everybody,
doesn't matter if you live in a blue state or
a red state. You know, folks need to just wake
up right.
Speaker 27 (01:32:49):
You know.
Speaker 10 (01:32:50):
In my speeches, I used to always have all part
where I would say, make sure you vote for somebody
who actually cares about your community, who's willing to actually
make investments in your community, and who cares about your children.
And from this current administration, we haven't seen any of
those types of things. They've gotten from you what they needed,
They wanted your vote, they told you what you wanted
to hear, and now the reality is kicking in. But
(01:33:13):
they also if you would have went a little bit deeper,
you would have actually been able to see that when
they were talking about Project twenty twenty five and Agenda
forty seven and all these various things that were out
there that yeah, after it impacted black and brown folks
and indigenous folks. You were right there also the next
to receive these impacts that were going on. So as
(01:33:33):
we move forward, you know, the midterms are not that
far away. It's literally a blink away. All people will
actually analyze these individuals who are asking for your vote
and ask yourself the question, will my life be better?
Will my children's life be better? If I give them
my vote?
Speaker 1 (01:33:50):
So let me say the final comment for I go
to break this is for all y'all people in Nevada,
all y'all people in Kentucky and all y'all people in
these red states who fail for Trump's stuff.
Speaker 33 (01:34:04):
You about to lose your job. You about to lose
your job. You are about to lose your job. And
y'all can't blame it on black people. You can't blame
it on brown people. All y'all can do is blame
that white's purposes in the White House.
Speaker 1 (01:34:25):
I'll be back.
Speaker 14 (01:34:29):

let's just say even more interesting.

Speaker 37 (01:40:00):
I got into this by myself.
Speaker 7 (01:40:02):
I'm gonna get out of it by myself.
Speaker 37 (01:40:04):

Speaker 10 (01:40:40):

Speaker 1 (01:40:40):

be great if we make the at the Rockers meet
the Knicks. Hey, I'm telling you. You know that's Elijah One.
Speaker 13 (01:40:59):
You know that's you and so that'd be great if
we were in the future, the near future, we meet
a finals NBA Finals.
Speaker 1 (01:41:09):
Well, well in the spring, I've already circled the date
Massive Square Garden. Last night, I was like, oh, I
got to hit Spike, I said, we got to go
to the game together because man, listen, listen, y'all balled out,
got a new coach. Hey, we got a young team.
I think it's gonna be a fantastic, fantalicy too. I
(01:41:29):
love your coach too. Oh yeah, oh yeah, so it's
gonna be all good, and I think so we'll see
what happens. Man, Let's get to it. You and you
and Denzel back together again, like like the song roverta
Flyk and dony Haathe, But I'm not going to sing it.
Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell what song? What don't matter?
(01:41:53):
I'm talking about? I'm talking about Great?
Speaker 10 (01:41:55):
Do it?
Speaker 4 (01:41:55):
I thought that you and.
Speaker 1 (01:41:58):
Say a song from the Great? So all I need
to get by? Oh there you go, There you go.
I ain't not like the real thing Marvin and Tammy
that's it, Donning and ROBERTA the Great? How long has
it been since y'all did a movie together? Inside Bend was?
(01:42:24):
It's like eighteen and nineteen?
Speaker 25 (01:42:26):
What is it?
Speaker 1 (01:42:28):
Can tell me to what the number is? Nineteen years?
Speaker 13 (01:42:32):
I did not know, bro, I'm not expired between Inside
Man and this new joint, the new Joint by the
Dynamic duo. Hi, it's the Lois. And I did not
know that until journalist told me. But it's not like
that's not then. I did not know that, and I
(01:42:54):
feel like that And it wasn't a situation where we.
Speaker 1 (01:42:56):
Felt we'll get that. We learned and redone the previous
four films. It was like his lowis was yesterday. You know,
that's that's relationship goes uh and uh again nineteen years
because it seemed like, man, I swear for a while there,
every year it was a movie coming out. Listen, I
(01:43:16):
still talk about you know, we just had our Black
Journalist Convention National Association of Black Journalists in Cleveland, and
I tell people all the time, we we they debut
MO Beta Blues at the convention, and I remember just
sitting in that movie theater Mesmer Rise the Colors, Earnest Dickerson.
I just I mean one of my favorite Spike Lee joints,
Mobit of Blues. Uh the better makes it no better,
(01:43:41):
no better? And you want some you want some more
of that mo better? Yeah? I want some more that
more better delivered with this new joint. Hi's the Lois.
Let's let's talk about that, because what for this Newest
What inspired you? The setting music? Exec Denzel's the Boss.
(01:44:10):
My gutness, you've got the amazing Jeffrey Wright. How if
it's come together? Well.
Speaker 13 (01:44:18):
This is a film that was made in nineteen sixty
three post war Japan by the great, great, magnificent Japanese
director Akira Kurosawa, which he adapted by Ed mc mahon
called King's Ransom.
Speaker 1 (01:44:33):
So description going around, going around and around around for years.
Speaker 13 (01:44:37):
And end up in Denzel's hands, and it takes place
in New York and the whole music that was in there,
and Denzel.
Speaker 1 (01:44:46):
Bless me, bless me by saying, Spike, I want us
to work again.
Speaker 13 (01:44:50):
This film takes New York, you know, in New York
front backwards, and that's how it happened, you know, it
was I didn't I know as nineteen years ago since.
Speaker 1 (01:45:02):
The Inside Man. But Roland here is appropriate because we
did not want to make We did not were not
doing a remake. We were doing a reinterpretation. Explain that
for the audience that doesn't understand what that means.
Speaker 13 (01:45:18):
It means that you respect the original, but you're not
trying to do everything that was done, and you're trying
to expand it at so Roland, I put myself, I'm.
Speaker 1 (01:45:33):
A great jazz musician. So we could see Julie.
Speaker 13 (01:45:36):
Andrews singing my favorite things in the sound of music
written by Rogers, Rogers, Hamhannerstein, great American standard. But what
did Coltrane do? What it Myles Davis when he did
My Funny Balance Time, what Elvis Gerald and Leon Throwne
do when they did the album Porgy and Best. It's
(01:46:00):
interpretations of great standards. And that's that's the approach we
took with this film.
Speaker 1 (01:46:08):
It is a it's a crime thriller. You obviously have
the amazing Denzel Washington. Uh. But when I when I
saw the trailer, I went, oh my god, Spike, has
Denzel and Jeffrey Wright together talk talk about you know
that combo because you're talking about I mean Jeffrey Wright.
(01:46:31):
Is I've said this number of times, is I believe
is one of the most underrated, underappreciated actors in Hollywood.
You're not lying. So since we lyne say it again
for the last row again, I've told this to him directly,
and I'm saying, I'm a text and we get done.
Jeffrey Wright flat out one of the most underappreciated actors.
(01:46:54):
In fact, I believe that it's the same thing I
said to Delroy Lindo when when you did the movie
with him, the Vietnam uh movie, the Five Bloods and
same things. So it's just unfortunately the way Hollywood works,
these amazing actors don't get the juicy roles things along
(01:47:18):
those lines. But uh, just talk about those two together
on screen there there there, how they flow back and
forth or.
Speaker 13 (01:47:29):
Number one, and thank you for saying that. And also
there's deep love respect between them.
Speaker 1 (01:47:38):
Deep game recognizes game. I'm gonna repeat that game game.
Speaker 13 (01:47:45):
And when you have two giants no matter what we're
talking about, sports, whatever, that come together.
Speaker 1 (01:47:55):
From a place where it's not competition but love and respect.
Speaker 13 (01:48:01):
It just lists of teams and sports and the same
thing in the art, you know, and music and him
and so it was a blessing to have.
Speaker 1 (01:48:11):
These two in this film.
Speaker 13 (01:48:15):
And you also you gotta add Wendell Pierce, you know
he don't sleep on Window Pierce.
Speaker 1 (01:48:19):
And there you go.
Speaker 13 (01:48:21):
Then you got the new Jack, the new Jack, the
new kid on the block. A said Rocky, who's bringing
it to Don't Sleep On? Don't sleep a Rocky in
this film. You know, he goes toe to toe with Denzel.
Speaker 1 (01:48:38):
What I so, So you just mentioned two other brothers.
So to give people a sense of what it was
like on that set, and and and you have, frankly,
you got the og, you got uh, you got the
O G and Denzel, the scenes in Vets and Jeffrey
(01:48:59):
and the window and then the young Cat and Acept
and how the four of them mesh to really create
something dynamic on the big screen. To be honest, it
wasn't a it wasn't a thing. You know, everybody knew
what their position was, what was required. I called the play.
Speaker 13 (01:49:26):
They went into the formation, you know, you know Roll,
you know I'm gonna work sports in it somewhere.
Speaker 1 (01:49:35):
Of course, of course people did that job. People knew
their job. They read the script, they knew both required.
Speaker 13 (01:49:44):
And here's the most important thing. They're coming to this
with love. Mh love, love, respect and when you're on,
when you when you come from that place, love and aberration.
The bullshit doesn't get in the way, simple as that.
Speaker 1 (01:50:14):
One of the things that I think also is another character.
It's frankly, the setting of the movie, the energy, the speed,
all of that I think that's a lot of times
that's often overlooked. I remember when Twelve Years of Slave
came out, and I never forget how Steph McQueen used
(01:50:35):
that sound for these really, really really long spaces that
actually made it very uncomfortable. And I was watching I
remark that I look at moves a little bit differently.
But the sound, the energy, the pacing of the city,
I believe also plays a part. Plays a is essentially
(01:50:56):
is a role in a movie like this. It's a character.
City is another character in the film.
Speaker 13 (01:51:03):
And I think, you know, basically Go Distances go down
as one of the great New York City films that
have been a great ones.
Speaker 37 (01:51:11):
I mean.
Speaker 13 (01:51:13):
Films but where Sacy Setlermit Talk the Afternoon with Pacino,
Billy Freakin's The French Connections.
Speaker 1 (01:51:24):
So there's a history of great, great films where New
York City is a character, and I hope people add
this film to that list. You've done so many movies
in the Nation's capitol film registry. What still excites you,
what still gets you fired up? What's still what still
(01:51:48):
brings you? Just outside of sports, Yes, outside of sports,
outside of being in the in the pro basketball Hall
of Fame.
Speaker 13 (01:51:58):
You think I saw that as a fan, but Roland,
you know all jokes aside. I thank you for that
question because something I think about often now more in
the past. Next year is gonna be my fourth decade
as a filmmaker, about forty years. And it's a blessing
(01:52:20):
because I say it to my class. You know, I'm
a tender professor film in my you graduate film school
also artistic director of the school. Is that I'm blessed.
And when when the individual is able to make a
living doing what they love is a blessing and the
(01:52:41):
joy of this people on this God's earth go to
a grave having worked at a job they hated, and
they're not gonna let their children not have food on
the table, pulls in the back or roof overheads.
Speaker 1 (01:52:54):
So you got to do what you gotta do for
your family. But the joy doesn't the joy it's not
coming from that profession or job you have. So I'm blessed.
I'm doing what I love, have great friends like yourself,
and I'm artistic. Come for artistic family, and that's which
(01:53:20):
my father never.
Speaker 13 (01:53:23):
Had great musician or did the scores for my films.
She's gonna have at school days, do the right thing.
Mobile blues. So it's a blessing. But it's my opinion
that if you.
Speaker 1 (01:53:42):
Ain't working hard, you ain't busting your ass. Then blessed
the coven. Kyler Perry said, it's just not gonna fallow
the heavens, and you're like, you're the next you know what.
That's the one thing when I travel around this country
and young people come up to me and they say,
I want to do what you do. I say, well,
(01:54:02):
this is what I tell her, But do you want
to do what I do? Oh? They step back. Then
they stepped back, so now and and I literally I
walk them through. I just had five interns who just finished.
I mean we were sitting right here. I literally just
landed in Indianapolis. Race to the hotel rooms, not ready,
not a problem, set the laptop up, external camera, light,
(01:54:26):
wireless microphone. I didn't I didn't bring anybody with me.
And what I told them was, I said, if you
want to do what I do and get what I've gotten,
then you got to do what I do. It's called
work ethic and and and it's studying photo Roland repeat
those two words again. I tell everybody it's work ethic.
(01:54:50):
You have to combine. You have to combine work ethic
studying your craft because they go together. Because you just
said something when you're talking about your students, your class.
When I interviewed Maddie Rich and I facetimed you and
Maddie and he and in Spike. You may never seen
(01:55:12):
the interview, but dude, he was crying and he said, man,
I was holding that thing in twenty years. He says,
I now understand what Spike was trying to tell me
back then. And here's Maddie now teaching in a film school.
And his wife came up to me at essence and
she said, Roland, you don't understand. He was carrying that
burden for twenty years. And what you were saying to
(01:55:33):
him then was you made a good movie. You made
a great movie. You're getting out of his attention. Study
your craft, work ethic, focus on understanding how to do
this and the nuances. And he said, and it's amazing
he's not doing that. And so many people, Spike, they
want the selfiest, they want the richest, They want to
be able to be known, to connect with the celebrities,
(01:55:54):
but they don't want to do the work. You got
to do the work. God put the working. But I
want can I can I add to you? Here's the thing, interview,
here's here's the secret. If you love what you're doing,
it's not work. Oh, if you love it, you do,
(01:56:18):
it's not work. If I was if I was more
uh more chest up in best man, sustained, that's sustained.
That's the beauty.
Speaker 13 (01:56:30):
If you find there's a thing that everybody don't look,
it's unforced everybody to find that's something that they love.
Speaker 1 (01:56:35):
But when you do, you're gonna will you if you
love it? You're not, You're not. You're not thinking about
the heart you have to go through to get what
we want to get there.
Speaker 13 (01:56:46):
But when you love something, when you are blessed to
find something that you want to do, something you want
to devote your life to the rest, devote the rest
of your life to whatever it is, it's not work.
Speaker 1 (01:56:59):
And nasphar right. But here's the thing, though, it's the
trick because you're trick in your mind. You know that
you know it's hard, but your mind it's trick because
you love what you're doing. So the hard work I
stop you from doing truth.
Speaker 13 (01:57:16):
Doing where you gotta get to dude, is what you
We're dropping pearls today, baby, I mean what you just said.
Speaker 1 (01:57:24):
I'm telling you. It's like when like people they stopped
me and they say, hey, Roland, this is your this
is your sister's birthday party. You got four cameras going
and you're shooting stuff. I said, oh, I'm sorry, that
was work.
Speaker 2 (01:57:41):
I mean, it was just.
Speaker 1 (01:57:42):
It was just. And so for me, I get joy
out of shooting. I get joy see everything.
Speaker 15 (01:57:51):
For me.
Speaker 1 (01:57:51):
People don't realize fact I went to communications high school.
I learned behind the camera before us in front of
the camera. So read it again, repeat that again. I
learned behind the camera before I got in front of
the camera, and I was excellent at that. So shooting
and setting up cameras and setting up Mike's and framing shots,
(01:58:15):
I was doing that in the tenth eleventh grade. So
what about being from the camera? In fact, you will
love it, says By. We couldn't walk into the TV
studio the first semester with to learn cables, definitions and everything.
So the second semesters, Mary Waits unlocks the door, the
all of students rushed to the set. Is that what
I said? I said, I turned my right. I said,
(01:58:37):
what does the person sit who tell them what to do?
And she said they sit and over there. I said,
I'll be over there. That was the control room. And
so but it's still it's the work ethic. And so
even though four halls of fame, multiple unreary degrees, I
still get joy out of a new piece of equipment. Spike, Oh,
(01:59:01):
I can I could do this, I can do that.
And that's the love.
Speaker 13 (01:59:07):
Love you know, you could just know my I know
it might sound simplistic, but L V E L absolutely
that's the key.
Speaker 1 (01:59:21):
And the sad thing is that sometimes people don't find
for whatever reason, yeah, that joy or that love and
and and it's it's it's sad. Yeah that is no
jump right here. You can just tell you bro give
(01:59:41):
me wrong people, and the energy you get is like
it's just off and like yeah, and just after that,
like I ain't gonna be around them no more because
I don't want to catch no seriously, I have. I mean,
you know, one of the I appreciate God getting. He
discerned there, folks, I'm like, fact, I told somebody this.
(02:00:03):
They thought I was lying. I said, I've been a
lot of celebrities. It's some people I don't want their
phone number. M bad, it's bad. It's some cats, don't
want their phone number. I don't want to talk to
them again. If I see them, I'm gonna stay on
this side. I might wave, keep it moving and they
like you see something like yeah, I don't. And because
(02:00:25):
again other folks can bring you down that negativity. Man,
I don't want that thing around me. I don't even
want you speaking speaking my family numbers is bad. Yeah,
the operative word is bad. It's bad. Michael said it,
though said again, not the way Michael's saying it. Yeah, no, no, no, no,
(02:00:50):
no no, don't he said bad. We talking about bad bad.
You know how we've been flipping stuff when when a
person sits in that seat and they sit down and
watch the movie. And for me, I was taught again
by Mary Wade's you watched to the end of the credits,
(02:01:12):
she said, because don't leave when the action is over,
she said, because the credits. That's how that movie got made.
So ever since high school, I literally stayed that seat, right.
But as a director, what do you want a moviegore
to walk out of that theater saying after they watch
(02:01:33):
this movie, what do you want them to feel?
Speaker 13 (02:01:37):
Denzel is such a magnificent actor, definitely one of the
greatest living actors today. And this Steell is about choices, morality, ethics,
and you have an actor like Denzel, the audience watching
this performance puts himself in Denzel's shoes, and.
Speaker 1 (02:02:03):
So when that happens, they become engaged.
Speaker 13 (02:02:06):
And the choices they see Denzel make, they ask themselves,
if that was in Denzel's shoes.
Speaker 1 (02:02:15):
What choice would I make and not make?
Speaker 13 (02:02:18):
And that's in great cinema for me, occurs when oises
become engaged, engaged and ask themselves what would I do?
Speaker 1 (02:02:33):
For example, this film, there's a mishandled kidnapping. Then I'm
just gonna say.
Speaker 13 (02:02:45):
You might be giving aways to some It's in the
trailer though, So that's all right if if your son
or child or really kidnapped, but there's a.
Speaker 1 (02:02:58):
Mistake and they grab the wrong person. But the person
who's doing the kidnapping said, I don't care if I
made a mistake, you still got to pay the money.
Would you pay two point five million dollars or a
son or daughter that wasn't yours?
Speaker 13 (02:03:22):
So the lawdience is thinking they see what's happening on screen,
but then it comes deeper.
Speaker 1 (02:03:27):
What would I do in that situation? Yep, yep, that's
choices and the problem and see the problem is Denzel's
so good. I got a Henry works on my staff,
he said. Man, he's so good. He had me pulling
for Frank lucas an American gangster. He was like, he said,
(02:03:49):
he walked out of the church. I was like, come on, Frank,
get away, get away. I mean, but again, but but
what you just said right there. That tells you when
a person that brings such power to a character that
you cheer for the bad guy.
Speaker 13 (02:04:10):
That's and there's only a few people on the EERF
can do that, and miss and our brother from money
or in Mount Vernon is one of them.
Speaker 1 (02:04:18):
I gotta ask you this here because I know you've
got a bunch of other interviews stuff along, though, I
got to ask you this here. Somebody said. Somebody said,
Lord Denzel turns seventy, and he has been snapping on
everybody recently, right he.
Speaker 39 (02:04:36):
He two of Jerry Jones, Jerry Jones, these sports talking heads,
I mean, they'll been snapping on everybody.
Speaker 1 (02:04:47):
They said, Man, the brother turned seventy. Uh he got
saved again, became a preacher. Said he been enlightening everybody up.
Caught fire and I'm telling you you don't want to
get caught in that fire. Let me from the experience.
(02:05:07):
You don't want it flying when Dee goes off on
your ass.
Speaker 15 (02:05:16):
You.
Speaker 1 (02:05:18):
Don't want it. You don't want it.
Speaker 10 (02:05:19):
You go.
Speaker 1 (02:05:21):
You're gonna love this one. So I met Paul Lett
his wife, Sam's wife Latanya before I met Denzel and Sam.
So I had a phone numbers before. I don't have dinzaels.
I got Sam. But the funny thing is I text
paul Lett. We text all the time. And man, when
(02:05:42):
I heard that Denzel was a Cowboy fan and in Spike,
you understand I hate the Cowboys more than I hate
the clan. I'm one hundred percent of Houston.
Speaker 15 (02:05:53):
Man.
Speaker 1 (02:05:54):
He started talking smack. He's start talking smack, and she's
transcribing to his small talking and I was talking back.
So I said, I said each other. You were texting
each other?
Speaker 4 (02:06:05):
No, I was.
Speaker 1 (02:06:07):
I was texting Paulette all right, right, and Paul and
I was trashing the Cowboys and Paulette was relaying to him.
When I was texting. He was telling her what the
text back to me, and it was like this here,
that was funny. Oh, absolutely absolutely, because I can't I
can't stand the Cowboys. I want them to go lose
(02:06:28):
every preseason game and go oh to sixteen. But you
have glove for the orange blue though, right, who's that?
Oh yeah, the Astros absolutely? Oh no, you got you
guys are blocking orange that blueing orange. No, no, we're
(02:06:49):
blueing orange. Were I'm sorry white, I'm sorry. We're blue
and no, no, no, no, we're blue and majestic orange. No,
we always had I blue, I got, I got the
old school rainbow.
Speaker 3 (02:07:02):
J R.
Speaker 1 (02:07:03):
Richards Jersey, what year? What year did? What year was
expanse year?
Speaker 10 (02:07:06):
The Houston As.
Speaker 1 (02:07:09):
Nineteen were the cold forty five's and then in the
late sixties and it was the year I don't know,
like sixty eight sixty nine.
Speaker 13 (02:07:19):
The New York Knickerbox is one of the charted members
of the NBA were Orange the Blue way before you.
Speaker 1 (02:07:24):
Guys, So I know, but y'all haven't won a title
since the original Chef came out. Was a good one.
He's a bad movie, Isaac, shut your mouth. Yeah, we
(02:07:48):
always have a get together. Who who? Who? Getting who
was the who is the biggest surprise in this movie
that as you to go, they.
Speaker 13 (02:08:01):
Good, Well, what I would saying for the audience, the audience,
my brother, they're gonna say a said Rocky.
Speaker 1 (02:08:12):
M hm. He's in there swinging. They're they're trading shots
Denzel and a sap in this film and.
Speaker 13 (02:08:19):
Uh what what what wasn't wasn't scripted? It turned to
a rap battle really dropping nas nomadic. See that's see
see that's the thing.
Speaker 1 (02:08:38):
See Denzel's competitive because you talked about and he got game.
He was like, listen, I ain't gonna ain't getting beat.
I'm gonna score something. I'm I'm gonna here. He wanna
be a dope. No, he was gonna at least go
some baskets. Another thing, go real quick is that Denzel
played j V at Courtam and p J. Christ was
(02:09:00):
really matter of fact. I just had one of my
interns runs tracking for him. She was just on a
uh uh for the rams. But see, I just I
just love I just loved that part. Again, whether it
was he got game or what you just described, the
competitive nature is like, oh oh so you're wrapped, Okay, Okay,
(02:09:21):
I mean don't don't don't don't think I'm an old geeze.
I got something for you too.
Speaker 13 (02:09:25):
But the reason, but the reason why that works for
it just is just list the whole time up. So
it's not done for selfish purpose. It's done to me better.
Speaker 1 (02:09:33):
There you go. That's a little a little bit deeper.
It's about love, all right. See see that's see. This
is the mistake that I think people make when you
talk about competition. Competition ain't bad. Magic said Larry made
(02:09:53):
him better. Larry said magic made him better. Bill Russell
said Wilt made him better. Don't say Bill Russell made
him better. U the o Jays and LeVert the Old
Jas said the Temptations made them better. The Temptations said
the Four Tops made them better. It drives me crazy
when folk are scared two to now somebody else and
(02:10:18):
and and and their greatness challenge you to be greater
and quite this whole thing about who's the goat is?
Oh man, I'm I'm I'm done with that. I hate it.
I think it should you Mike, don't give a you
know what about that?
Speaker 13 (02:10:38):
And I think that it's it's gone overboard with this
Lebron Michael things. I mean, it's why can't they both
be great? I mean it's it's gone overboard and I'm
tired of it.
Speaker 1 (02:10:49):
I'm tired. I don't even want to think of me, Spike.
I don't want to hear the greatest stuff, because don't
you can't act like Kareem didn't exist, the oh didn't exist,
and Bill Russell didn't exist. So to me, it's your
stupid I don't want to hear it. To me, you
rebel in the greatness of all of them.
Speaker 13 (02:11:09):
Uh, And that, to me, I think is the most
worn up in Brooklyn to think Russell's who's better Mickey
Man and Willie Mays.
Speaker 1 (02:11:15):
And you know, I was saying to say, hey kids,
well may there you go, there you go. Last question
for your Spike. Yeah, if you had to sit down
(02:11:36):
and somebody somebody, no, I don't want to ask the question.
You were in a group. You you go somewhere. You're
in a classroom with a group of students and this
is shocking, but they don't know who Spike Lee is.
Let's go to the future. We are one hundred years
in the future and you're in a classroom with a
(02:11:59):
group of students of all your movies, what movie would
you want to show them that speaks to who you are?
Malcolm X.
Speaker 13 (02:12:14):
And I think that Denzel gave one of the greatest
performances in film ever in his depiction of my brother Malcolm.
Speaker 1 (02:12:23):
And that's the film that had the most riding on it.
Speaker 13 (02:12:26):
I never I don't know I've ever told you this,
But before we did the film, I called up the
Minister Minster Faria Constant, my beloved.
Speaker 1 (02:12:35):
We got to talk.
Speaker 13 (02:12:39):
And sat down with the Minister because I cannot put
cast a crew in danger. You know, I cannot have
the prove of Islam fys roll up on set. We
had a great meeting and Minister I've said this public before,
so it's not a secret.
Speaker 1 (02:12:54):
You said Spike, I.
Speaker 13 (02:12:56):
Really cannot come out on what you'll say about Armblelige Muhammad.
Speaker 1 (02:13:02):
No, he says, can't come on what you said about
brother Malcolm will be there. We careful what you say
about armor lage Muhammad.
Speaker 13 (02:13:14):
And then when the movie came out, I got this
letter from Minister Farca say how much he loved the film,
and I framed it and it's up on the wall
in my office.
Speaker 1 (02:13:25):
But I had to do that. I had to go
to Chicago and sitting down, I had to do that.
But you also, this is the off screen part. You
also with them. Let the team says, know, y'all don't
have some black drivers. Oh yeah, the teams are the Union.
(02:13:45):
You know, they drive the trucks.
Speaker 13 (02:13:46):
And I met with Tommy o'donald and I said, look,
why are there no black teams?

It wasn't I just look, and I know you don't
want to be messing with the with the brothers for Islam.
So that's really.
Speaker 13 (02:14:18):
A great moment if you understand that historically these unions
have kept minorities and women out.
Speaker 1 (02:14:26):
Yep, Yep. That was a big, big, big breakthrough. Yep.
Well it looks like you have done uh truly amazing things. Man,
is always great when we get to chop it up.

window Piers. See these streaming services, they don't spend money
bear anybody on black on media. And I have a
typical rule. When they got movies a conversation there you go,
and I have a rule. They all called me to
(02:15:10):
push the product. They don't want to spend no money
on advertising. So an exception was made for this movie
and you Apple Studios.
Speaker 27 (02:15:21):
No.
Speaker 1 (02:15:22):
I said, Yo, yeah, don't let me. Don't let me
and you don't want you better go and get us
in because see the deal is no, no, no, let me.
Let's be honest. So no ownership. I'm not ownership. But
advertising every time was as as everything now Apple. The
(02:15:43):
only thing ever it was when the movie Swagger came out,
When the show Swagger came out, and they came to me.
They asked me to moderate a panel I had to
cast on the show. And it was like a ten
thousand dollars deal. And you know, and the sister who
was there, I had hooked up with na bj and
(02:16:03):
they were talking. We wanted to do this much broader
thing and I ain't got a problem saying it. I
reached out to some one of the executives there and
the CMO with Apple wouldn't even meet with me. They've
never spent they ever spent any money. And we're talking
about Apple, Hulu, Paaramount, stars, all these people, and this
is what I tell them. Y'all, y'all love, y'all want
my audience to watch your stuff, and you want to
(02:16:26):
bring your stars for interviews, but then you don't want
to spend any advertising money. And I and I and
I told goddamn shame and word is bond. I will
be speaking to Apple. Brother. I appreciate it because where
is vond? I mean and and thank for doing this
(02:16:50):
without getting any advertisement. But this will be the last time,
my brother. I appreciate it. Highest to Lois. Check it
out in so seeing in the theaters. It's in theaters.

in this world to.
Speaker 7 (02:18:34):

for something that you're wanted.
Speaker 10 (02:19:20):
