Speaker 1 (00:01):
Great support, one hundred and twenty miles from San Diego
to La Oh It's giving away.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
I'm Adrian Gotacia Marquis and this is Behind the Flow,
the podcast where we dive deep, week by week into
the heart of San Diego fsy's very first season in
Major League Soccer. This week it's all about the hardest
thing in football, scoring goals. Godas Gordon, from Tommy to
any Balacati, from Irvingo to me Donilowski as DFC have
(00:38):
tried it all at number nine and get somehow They're
still second in MLS for goals scoring.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Trior for the.
Speaker 4 (00:47):
First time it string change on his left foot.
Speaker 5 (00:51):
Hen Rever.
Speaker 6 (00:54):
Ernie put Vesco say if that changes now to them.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
Triers it back.
Speaker 6 (01:02):
Well.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
Here from sporting director Tyler Heaps on the plan that
started it on.
Speaker 6 (01:06):
It is no.
Speaker 5 (01:07):
Secret and I'm not surprising anybody when I say this,
but scoring goals is the most difficult thing to do
with football.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
And from the MVP front running I'm there. Dreyer alias
El Palletero leading the charge with goals and assists and
double scoops of Sundays.
Speaker 7 (01:22):
I love to have the ball, I love to be creative,
and scoring goals, making assists is mainly what I have
to do.
Speaker 6 (01:30):
So here's the big question.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
No Number nine is that really no problem? This is
behind the flow. And as always I'm joined by Gantia
Castrena and Darren Smith. Are you still buzzing from the
weekend because I'm still feeling it? From San Diego FC
(01:55):
going into Los Angeles studio thirty two fifty two camera
instant classico.
Speaker 6 (02:02):
What a game? It was absolute fire.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
Geez as electric as I can recall Middle Channel Police,
the messic face with the arrival of so Yomid sky game.
Speaker 4 (02:23):
They always fine away shock, he ties it porches Son,
you me that is an excellent say from CJ do Santosh.
Speaker 6 (02:36):
This is Trier, this is his sweet spot. You could
big cut a second cut. Is he your MVP?
Speaker 2 (02:49):
So we were all there, We witnessed it and ended
to one a goal in each half, an epic win.
Speaker 6 (02:55):
Gata Castorina, what stood out?
Speaker 8 (02:57):
What a game when you was going to be exciting
and it was sure was entertaining intents. We got a
sneak peek of what could come in the playoffs. Say
Believe and LFC had a game plan of how to
hurt San Diego. We had a chance to talk to
Steve Torondolo before the game. They were going to be
more attentive than those first thirty minutes from the first
(03:17):
time around when they faced each other in San Diego,
and they and they did. They jumped the lines with
the long ball, got in between the center backs, and
Wanga opened the scoring. They had an identical play few
minutes later that could have made it to nil in
that first half, and maybe that would have changed any everything,
but San Diego stood strong, found their footing and the equalizer. Man,
(03:38):
it was just this beautiful combination play between Balacardi, Dryer
and Chucky Losano to score that goal the way he
even celebrated looking at the fans. He knows there are
a lot of Mexican fans there as well. And then
in the second half they capitalized like they do when
they had to. It was just very good overall to
see the atmosphere, the endi tensity, and just an image
(04:01):
that will stay with me was that celebration in the
end when they went up to those six hundred fans
that were in attendance and they were celebrating Iceland style,
giving me those flashbacks of that euro It was very
impressive and it was like very special to witness.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
Yas got you have well described they spoiled a party
or as Ander said, killed the party.
Speaker 6 (04:22):
Guys they killed they did kill it.
Speaker 9 (04:24):
And they were so common, they were so confident walking out.
You and I were positioned in our radio booth. We
had a perfect view of everybody walking out onto the
pitch and it just looked like there was a confidence
there in their step walking out into the dugout area.
Loved everything about that. And then they have a knack
for this, this whole kill the party thing, right. There
were a couple streaks that were going on into this match.
(04:46):
One of them, obviously, was the away streak, which continues
now and extends to seven. And you know the other
one is how they perform against clubs from the state
of California. This makes it five wins against zero losses,
zero draws against clubs with one match to go, looking
for a clean sweep against San Jose coming up in September.
Speaker 6 (05:06):
I think Katya hit the nail on the head.
Speaker 9 (05:07):
It had a playoff atmosphere to.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
It, But Gatya, there was also another superhero flying around
the three pipes and CJ.
Speaker 6 (05:15):
Losantos didn't have a bad night.
Speaker 8 (05:17):
He most definitely did not, and I'm going to get
into that, but before I get into that, I think
mikey Vedas gave that right message of being, hey, guys,
everyone's going to be watching, so let's make a statement
as well and show them what San Diego is all about.
And that's what they did. But as impressive as the
goals were and what we sought to get the result, Yes,
(05:37):
I have to agree because even though un There's Dryer
said that they killed them those first twenty minutes of
the second half, I have to go with the last
twenty minutes of the game when they stoo strong because
men elliof C Were literally on top of them and
they weathered the storm. And in those games you have
to learn how to suffer a bit, because there are
going to be games when you're going to have to suffer.
(05:59):
But those I just make the victory even sweeter because
CJ came out big with those saves, a save against
Sun Dua, with the defensive blogs Magnare, I mean, everybody,
it was a great effort and I think that's what
makes it even the more special and just sweeter of
the victory because they were away, because they came out
with the three points, because they're sweeping the LA teams,
(06:19):
they spoiled the party, but also because the way they
defended and they stood strong in those final minutes. I
think it was very impressive.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
It was and Darren the impressiveness and we'll close out
the talk hero that was this epic, this instant classical.
I've basically tagged that the instant classical because we were
waiting to see what was this rivalry going to become?
And it has from day one in San Diego now
to kind of just give us chapter two, it has
become an instant classic amongst MLS rivalries. And that's what
(06:50):
Tom Penn I think said it the best. It has
to happen naturally, and boy have we seen a natural
rivalry pop up right before our eyes.
Speaker 9 (06:58):
Yeah, we have. And you know you can ask the
San Diego born manager of LAFCO, who is not too
pleased at the end of that one and really felt like,
you know, hey, give San Diego credit, but you know,
in a six pointer with only a handful of matches
to go, you know, we felt like we should have
performed a little bit better than that, and let's also
remind everybody of one thing here, because SDFC did something
(07:20):
at the end of that match. You know, we could
talk about tactics and goals and MVP odds and all
that sort of stuff, but you know, let's not forget
SDFC seventeen wins.
Speaker 6 (07:28):
Now.
Speaker 9 (07:28):
You know that that equalled Saint Louis's record seventeen wins.
Nobody's won more as an expansion club, and just a
couple of points away from breaking the all time record
for points in an expansion season. Kudos to everybody, from
Tyler to Mikey, to the players, to the fan to everybody.
That is something everybody I think can celebrate in, even
though we all understand the job's not even close to
(07:50):
being done. But that's significant and that's something I think
people should really really be.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
Proud of and very proud of. And Gota you mentioned it, Darren.
We've mentioned a separate times Manoldua, the top pick in
the super draft, how he's paying off with dividends, and
then you mentioned Ian Pilcher, the second pick for San
Diego FC in the Super draft, also paying off every
time he hits the pitch. We know what McNair's going
to give you. We know what mcvay's going to give you.
And Luca Bombino, a kid that was literally borrowed from
(08:17):
LAFC comes down to the finest city. We got to
meet his grandparents before the game. Great people. They were
so hyped for their grandkid and and to have him
perform as well. So that back line in front of CJ.
Losantos definitely got the jomp done. Middle of the park.
Shout outs to Nivan obviously, look at there's but that
being the story on the pitch, how was this team
(08:39):
built to score the goals? We know who are the
guys keeping him out and doing a really really good
job of that. But two designated players were in mind.
I guess before the ball was ever kicked.
Speaker 6 (08:50):
San Diego FC had.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
A master plan, a number nine through the middle, balanced flexibility,
the right to dream philosophy, all adapted to Major League soccer,
and back in the summer twenty twenty four, sporting director
Tyler Keeps only had a handful of players on the roster,
but he already had a clear idea as to how
he wanted to build this team to score goals from
(09:11):
day one, and this is what he told us.
Speaker 5 (09:18):
The two words I like to use in the roster
build are balance and flexibility. So we're definitely looking for
a balance from an age standpoint. We're looking from a
balance in terms of the player types that we get,
the ones that players that can play both ways, that
fit the culture, that have the same values as us,
and all that stuff. We're looking for flexibility in terms
of different ways that we can play in expansion year.
(09:38):
I think flexibility in terms of players that can play
multiple positions is extremely important. So a nine that can
also play as a winger or a fullback, that can
play on both sides, like those little details are really
important for us in year one because we don't know
what's going to happen. We don't know how people are
going to settle, we don't know how injuries are going
to happen in this sport because we're a team obviously
that's starting from scratch. So having that flexibility I think
(10:01):
is also really important.
Speaker 6 (10:03):
From the outset.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
As DFC, we're building a right to dream team, one
grounded in values and development. But this is MLS, a
league where clubs live or die on the impact of
their designated players.
Speaker 5 (10:16):
The league will be a bit more transitional, not to
say that we won't be brave and build up, but
I'm talking more when we're deep in the opponent's half,
we can't go one v one in the back, and
that'll be very game specific for us, because if you're
one v one in the back and it's Dennis Bowanga,
it's completely different because he's obviously a DP. That's a
game changer in this league, and it will be something
that will obviously heavily be discussed in some of our meetings.
(10:37):
But that's probably like a little example where we need
to be a little bit cautious in certain areas because
there are massive game changers in this league because the
dps and the roster rules. Just that's the reason for them.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
Which is why their very first big signing was Mexican
superstar Irving chu Quilosano, and the task from then on
was to build a team that could get the best
out of him.
Speaker 6 (10:59):
Irving is a world class football there.
Speaker 5 (11:01):
I think anybody would be lucky to have him, and
I also know for a fact there's been many MLS
teams that have tried to get them, and so for us,
that's probably one of the big guns our plan is
to shift our build and build with three most often,
so that means that probably the left full back plays
a bit deeper, a bit more defensive. That will allow
we think Irving to be really successful. Give him a
bit more flexibility in terms of trying to take up
(11:21):
transition spots and trying to impact the game, allowing him
the flexibility to play wide or come inside, which we
think he can do.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
After locking in Losano, the next step was obvious. Use
the second DP spot on the opposite flank, a right
winger with end product, someone with shine like Andres Dreier,
with Marcus inmbarks In through the middle. The plan was
to knit it all together.
Speaker 5 (11:43):
It is no secret and I'm not surprising anybody when
I say this, but scoring goals is the most difficult
thing to do in football, and when you have a
restricted roster with discretionary spend and only a number of
different positions, you normally spend that on goal scorers or
goal contributors. Probably is a better way to frame. So
we know we have that on the left side of
Irving and we want to get the best out of him,
(12:03):
but to be able to complement that on the other side,
we think is the right way to build our initial roster.
That's been after a lot of different analysis that we've
done around the league about the trends of DPS, what
way they're going more and more. We obviously then already
have Marcus, who we think is best as a nine
and occupying the center back, so that kind of lends
itself that if we can get a really really good
balance front line that we think will be in a
(12:25):
good shape. So we're looking at a right winger that's
probably false footed, that prefers to play in the pocket,
that's a bit of a footballer, but also provides something different,
the ability to run behind, the ability to come short,
the ability to combine someone that's strong, powerful that can
come in this league and make an impact right away.
It's also no secret that the fullbacks in this league
are also the most underpaid role. It's normally the cheapest
(12:47):
position on your roster. So if you can find a
way to then put your best players against those you
probably it defines success. And so that's the approach that
we're taking. So just again we see that as probably
the best balance where they can't overly shadow then the
other side and it allows irving to hopefully be isolated
and get opportunities to go one v one if we
(13:08):
can also put that on the other side.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
And finally, there had to be space for new unknown
talent to grow into the system, players like young Alex Maightin,
who's one v one ability give San Diego FC something different.
Speaker 5 (13:21):
Alex is unbelievable, Like this kid always has a smile
on his face, and I think that was apparent as
soon as I was able to have a conversation with
him in the interview process. He is somebody that his
career has been really really unique. He's a name that
obviously I knew well from when I was at the Federation.
He was always one of those dual nationals that was
always in the plan. Obviously had really really high potential.
(13:41):
It is the style of play. It is how we
expect our wingers to play. You have to play both
ways in this system. It's not that you're only an
attacker and it's not that you're only a defender. So
it's been a little bit of a learning curve for him.
His reactions when the balls turn over, these transition moments
and a possession based team are really important. So I
think he's getting that from that training environment, also level
of training. We train at a very high intensity, and
(14:03):
so a person of his age and where he's at
in his career, I think he needs to continue to
develop on the training ground and then be able to
showcase himself and be more confident in those match stays.
So we fully expect that he's going to be someone
that can make a difference. He's somebody that is different
to our other profiles that we're looking at because he
has that one vwantability and that ability to go by people.
So we want to try to make sure that we
(14:25):
set conditions that set him up for success.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
All Right, we're going to talk about Alex might in
a little bit more as we get into the youth
than what they've been able to bring.
Speaker 6 (14:39):
To San DIEGOEBS. But that was obviously Tyler.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
Heaps the youngest sporting director in Major League Soccer no
less at the very beginning, kind of just giving us
a layout as to what he was looking for, what
was the expecting the vision. It's playing out now, guys,
we're feeling it now, we're seeing it. And Darren Tyler
talked about building around the two deep p and the
numbers do not.
Speaker 9 (15:01):
Like, I love listening to Tyler describe Andnder's Dryer without
naming him, right before we even knew what his name was.
Here he is talking about what they're looking for from
a right winger, and you're like, yeah, okay, it sounds
like Anders Dryer, doesn't it. We all understand the impact
of MESSI, what he means to the sport, etc. But
that's a sixth place team. This is an expansion team
(15:22):
that is being led by Anders Dryer. He's obviously not
doing it alone. But he's played every game. He's an
all star. He's been on the Team of the match
day more times than I can remember. When we talk
about the success of Anders has scored what I think
it's twelve of his fourteen goals away from Snapdragon Stadium.
And oh, by the way, when he scores, SDFC wins
full stop. When he scores in a match, sdfc's undefeated.
Speaker 6 (15:46):
That's a real stat.
Speaker 9 (15:47):
I remember when the season started and learning a ton
about Major League Soccer, somebody said, you've got to get
your designated players right. That's the thing you have to
It's so important to get the dp's right. Yeah, they
nailed them. They absolutely nailed both of them. Both of
these guys have been fantastic.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
And Tyler also mentioned something very very interesting how fullbacks
are often the weak spot of an MLS squad in general.
And Darren, you touch upon the numbers. But Gantia, you've
seen a lot of teams across the league. How does
sdfc's approach compare the clubs who lean so heavily to
rontal We're looking at you.
Speaker 6 (16:19):
But Sandy GOFC got it right.
Speaker 8 (16:21):
They definitely got it right. It's incredible just to think
about the fullbacks situation. They are the cheapest position, as
seller hips mentioned on MLS rosters, yet they are the
ones who have to go against every opponent's best player,
so that is crazy. But yes, a MLS you need
your DPS to perform. It's that simple. The way their
(16:41):
rosters are built, the salary cap limitations, you invest the
most money on your DPS and you need those guys
of course, to make a difference. That's why they're your DPS.
And yes, it is a team sport. That collective is
very important and you need other guys to do great,
especially on defense. You always want to strive for balance.
Just remember it comes to mind that Galaxy when they
(17:03):
had slat Any Brahmovich, he would score three four goals
in a game and they would still loose. Sometimes they
was just crazy. Slatin would go nuts about it because
he's like, I'm scoring you guys three four goals and
we can't get three points. That was crazy. But in
those big moments, those are your difference makers. You need
(17:23):
those players playoff games, championship games, they step up and
like another Galaxy reference because it's the freshest one. I
guess when we come to the reigning champions but when
you look at what they did double digits and goal
contributions from their DPS with Rikiuch, with Joseph Painzel, Gabriel Peck,
and they won the championship, but propelled them to the championship.
(17:45):
And that's what as EFC's top guys are doing this year.
They're making all the difference when you need them the most.
We saw it again on Sunday, and that's what you want.
And then they could definitely propel them to a championship.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
And to close this out, Darren, because if this is
about culture as well with San Diego FCI, we've heard
it many many times here and behind the flow of
how important not only was the roster build and the
right player, the right type of talent for this system,
but also the culture guys.
Speaker 9 (18:11):
Not only that, but it was this past weekend and Adrian,
you and I talked about it on the broadcast. I
don't know that they showed it on television, but I
thought it was such an important moment for Irving. Right,
Chucky is the guy that's running around on the pitch,
who's running around, scoring, tackling, doing all those things. But
when Irving gets subbed out of the match, it looked
like like Irving was coaching. You know, he was standing
(18:33):
up there and he was subbed out, so he had
the BIB on, but he was standing about five six
feet away from head coach mikey Vadis, and he was
imploring the guys. You can see how into it he was.
He was trying to shout out any sort of inspiration
or instruction and it looked like he had joined the
coaching staff when he got subbed off. And maybe he's
(18:54):
done that and we've missed it. I don't think so.
But we've seen players sometimes they get subbed out, they're
ticked off. Yeah, they and they you know they got
to cool offer a little bit.
Speaker 6 (19:02):
What are you doing coach?
Speaker 9 (19:03):
Yeah, right, And it wasn't him like he was there
and he was up and he was so into that match.
At the end of it, I thought it was a
great moment and a great example of what that guy's
all about.
Speaker 2 (19:13):
And that's it, and it speaks volumes as to the
blueprint that has been established here at SANDYGFC, starting with
the culture, the type of player, the right to dream system,
the manager, the sporting director, everybody at the executive level.
This was done carefully and it's just turned out to
be a brilliant product and it's still building guys and
a major kitaso. As we would say in this Manol
(19:35):
is finding that guy pedeng Pet.
Speaker 6 (19:41):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
The ice cerman has been delivering Sundays ballets, whatever you
need on a hot day, Andres Dryer has been taking
care of you.
Speaker 6 (19:50):
So that is what we're going to talk about next.
Speaker 2 (19:52):
We're going to be chanting, Yes, MVP, MVP Anders Dryer.
After the cooling break, Welcome back to Behind the Flow.
(20:15):
And if you've been anywhere near snap Dragon Stadium this
season La Mission del the Murph Dragon, you're gonna know
the name on everybody's lips.
Speaker 6 (20:25):
And there's Dreyer.
Speaker 2 (20:27):
The Danish wingers been lighting up Major League Soccer with goals, assists,
highlight reels, great quotes like kill the party and the
fans just can't get enough. Every time he touches the ball,
you're gonna feel the buzz, the ripple, through the stands,
through the building, through the Final City, through all the
mission Valley. Now we sat down with and there's just
a few weeks ago to hear how he's embraced San
(20:49):
Diego SI's style, and why he feels this project is different,
and how his partnership with Irring Juqui Losano has become
one of the deadliest duos in the league. Yes, they
become Batman and Batman. There's no Batman and Robin here.
This is Batman and Batman. Here's Anders.
Speaker 6 (21:08):
I am honest.
Speaker 7 (21:10):
I play for San Diego and I'm a right winger.
I enjoy playing the San Diego right to dream style
of football.
Speaker 6 (21:18):
A lot personally.
Speaker 7 (21:19):
That's the way I want to play football. I love
to have the ball, I love to be creative and
scoring goals, making assists is mainly what I have to do.
But of course being involved a lot in build up
and yeah, just when we break through and stuff like that.
I love the way we play and I like it,
and it's just reminding you that what you do is
(21:42):
so amazing.
Speaker 6 (21:42):
I think we have.
Speaker 7 (21:43):
A nice, nice squad. It's also the way that we
are a new team and people come here because they
trust the process and they trust the project. It's not
like when you go to another club where there is
a history and they're all always be players in the
corner who might want to leave and stuff like that.
(22:04):
Here you come to a club with twenty five players
who just want to be here, and I think that's
been very nice and a good way to do it.
It's not often you get a chance to be a
part of a totally new team, and I think that's
also something we hear. Players stuff enjoy a lot to
be representing San Diego.
Speaker 6 (22:26):
I think we as a team, the way we.
Speaker 7 (22:28):
Play, it's better for players to come in. Sometimes you
see in other clubs if you have a lot of
injuries or whatever, it's more difficult because maybe the game
plan is different from game to game, But here's the same.
I don't think the team only relies.
Speaker 6 (22:44):
On how I do.
Speaker 7 (22:45):
We have eleven players on the field, and like one
player cannot win the game alone. And it's also my
teammates that makes me better as a player, and I
try to make them better as well. It's about creating
a culture where it's important to be the best version
of yourself every day and want to win every day.
That's why I started playing football, of course because it
(23:06):
was fun, but also because sitting in the dressing room
and one a game is one of the best feelings
it is. I think Chuky suits me quite well because
I like to have the ball and look for passes,
especially like of course in behind, and Choky is one
of his key weapons, I would say, is the timing
(23:26):
and the runs he can make in behind and his
scoring abilities as well. So for me, linking up with
Chuki is is is nice.
Speaker 6 (23:37):
And I think.
Speaker 7 (23:38):
We we we've been doing very well and I hope
it continues, both on and off the pitch, and I
have the feeling that he also knows that when I'm
on the ball, especially that he is making the runs,
and we have an eye for each other in that
way on the pitch to see where each other are.
(23:59):
So yeah, I hope bit continuous and I hope both
of us are staying fit and ready for the rest
of this season.
Speaker 2 (24:11):
He's committed to the style and the culture of this club, guys,
and that partnership with Juquilosano, it just might have become
the best dynamic duo right now in Major League Soccer.
You can argue with us about that when all you
want the question is how do they fit into the
bigger picture, especially with the number nine role still in
flux because Darren Gatia and let's get into it. We've
(24:33):
seen it where sometimes an over reliance on your dps,
if they're not there to save the day, somebody else
needs to step up, and that's kind of been the
issue with the number nine position, that target striker Darren.
We thought that Marcus, for example Iningbarkson was going to
be the answer, but injuries have not allowed him to
become a part of this. We saw it in a
(24:54):
flash are Lampao if you will, for Marcus in Berkson
and what he's capable of, but he hasn't been out
there leaving the workload for the dpiece.
Speaker 9 (25:01):
He hasn't and you know, you feel like some of
the decision making was based on hoping Marcus would be
available between now and the start of the postseason. Right like,
it was great to see him come off the bench
and not only equalized, but also how the game winning
assist against Earthquakes a couple of weeks ago, and you think, Okay,
this was the plan, wasn't it. This is the guy
(25:22):
who they were structuring a lot of the front line
success around, given the importance of the number nine position
in this style.
Speaker 2 (25:30):
Marcus was injured in early March, out for three months
lower body issue. On that occasion, it was midfielder onnioaila
Gotti who was asked to step in, not his natural position.
We've seen it the way he kind of breathes easier
in the middle of the park.
Speaker 6 (25:43):
But it worked. It worked.
Speaker 2 (25:44):
I mean, the guy, he's a professional, does whatever Mikey's
asking him to do. He leans a lot on Marcus's
vision and Chooky's runs, but he's looked uncomfortable, but it worked.
He even scored as dfc's first ever goal ist snap
Dragon Stadium after coming on for Marcus.
Speaker 6 (25:59):
Let's take a list for player to take a corner
kick in del.
Speaker 3 (26:02):
At tore and right on the fields, but Shuberto's off, Yeah, down.
Speaker 6 (26:06):
To man d Cardi.
Speaker 1 (26:07):
Lordley Hobbits stays down this time.
Speaker 6 (26:16):
So he's not a natural nine Darren something.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
But naturally he's tried to make it work because that's
what this team is, all for one and one for all.
Speaker 9 (26:25):
Well, we heard what Tyler Heaps had to say when
he was building this roster. He needed players that could
be versatile. I don't know that we've had a better
example than any Ve Lacari because, as you said, a
junior right, he's more of a midfielder. He's played all
across the midfield. He's played left wing, he's played the
number nine spot, and he's the only other player besides
Anders Dryer, who's played every match this season. He's one
(26:47):
of the more fouled players. He's drawn a couple penalties,
so he's been physical. You know, he fouls a lot,
he gets fouled a lot. He's played everywhere. I think
he's been an unsung hero. It's not exactly a square
peg round whole kind of situation here, but he does
whatever it is that's asked of him. And when you
go back and you listen to how Tyler built this roster,
I wonder if that's what he was thinking with any
Valacari in particular.
Speaker 2 (27:08):
And then came the other nine. In fact, can I
do the second a Mexican oela because I'm going to you, Gatia,
and I know we've we've had our shares of Mexican
noelans throughout our life, but let's go. I'm gonna kind
of give it to you in that sort of read logo,
go Miloni Luski, Then Cai Miloni Luski, jego I la
berdad elekpo.
Speaker 6 (27:27):
Send new trio.
Speaker 2 (27:28):
Thiss goal is de milon is lego see and let
me translate that with the drama he bursts onto the scene.
He becomes the second highest scorer with ten goals, and
then he left Gotia. That left another gap, and when
Marcus did finally return, it was electric contre Marcus Cambiaria too,
(27:53):
got Ya?
Speaker 8 (27:58):
I mean yes, no, that story was heartbreaking. Talk about
a tele in novela during this season because of the injuries.
And then here comes miilin Alosky, the hometown kid, starts
scoring goals double digits in less than five hundred minutes,
starts making an impact, and then he leaves and breaks
everybody's heart. And then he comes back to MLS, but
(28:20):
with a different club and who. We're not going to
get into that story. It was tough. It's just the business.
It's what happens in football. But kudos to the team
because even though we've had a telenovela, everybody has stepped up.
Speaker 2 (28:31):
That's a great point because now you add to the
collective the possibility Darren Smith of a healthier Marcus Inberkson
with the Mans used to putting up big time numbers.
He's just hasn't been able to stay on the field.
Speaker 9 (28:43):
He hasn't and just hope that at some point here
this doesn't become sort of a mental challenge for Marcus
in terms of being fit when the season started, having
to miss a bunch of matches, coming back, missing more
matches coming back, now missing the last two five regular
season matches to go, so you kind of understand, you
(29:04):
know why, there's other options out there. Corey Baird came
in look good for about forty minutes and then you
know he hops off and he isn't right, and maybe
it's you know, Pellegrino, who's more of a winger.
Speaker 6 (29:15):
So you know it.
Speaker 9 (29:16):
Feels like it's it's you know, still under construction here
trying to be put together. It's one of the things
I think, you know, that we'll be talking about a
lot over the five remaining regular season matches, is what
that will look like in the middle. They have essentially
been without a true number nine for the majority of
the season.
Speaker 6 (29:33):
Ladies and gentlemen.
Speaker 2 (29:34):
From a professional broadcaster, that's called a segue, and he's
leading us right into what's coming up next, because that's
what we're going to talk about. Who's been that number nine,
who's been given the opportunity to step into that spot,
and how does the youth and the future play into
that spot in the future of the attack of San
Diego FC. With five games remaining, playoffs on the horizon
(29:55):
and a lot of utro legue moments coming right up,
stay with us. We'll catch on way back, Welcome back.
(30:15):
Tyler Heaps always said that there had to be space
for new talent to step up. Players like Alex Mikein
still earning the system, but with one v one spark
and ability the man from Nottingham Forced, you know, he
can unleash the speed coming up that left Rail Academy
products like Tommy Young Kid, the skill set, the bloodlines everything,
(30:35):
even midfielders, as we mentioned any Ba Lacati who's been
asked to step in and do whatever was needed, and
now with experienced signings like Corey Bairtt, who we've discussed
at as DFC, suddenly have become a real mix of
youth and experience to call on for Mikey about us
off of that bench and not just for the rest
of the season, but maybe we can suggest for the
(30:56):
future as well. And Darren, how does that depth stack
up for you head into this closing run.
Speaker 9 (31:02):
Yeah, it's really tough to say, you know, it is
tough to say because we you know, we now know
that Corey Bairtt is down for some period of time
and we're not quite sure what's going on with Marcus
ingverts in other than he's missed the previous couple of
matches after playing ten minutes against San Jose. But you know,
when you put somebody in and Katia his point about
you know, maybe any Valacari isn't a classic number nine,
(31:23):
but he did just enough there to hold it up,
to pass it back to Anders, to allow Anders to
do his thing, to assist with Chooky's goal against LAFC.
That you can get enough out of that position because
of what's being asked to them, because of the culture
of the club that it It doesn't just have to
be an empty spot. It's not like they're going to
change their formation, you know, That's not what they're going
to do. They're going to continue to play this four
(31:45):
to three three right to dream style. So it is
going to be about, you know, maybe match to match
who it is that steps up each week in training
to figure out what to do with the ninth spot.
It feels like it's Auni's today, but you know that
being said, if something happens in the midfield, is it
more valuable there, and then you ask somebody else to
fill into that spot. So I do think that that
(32:06):
really is in addition to the sum of the benchmarks
and keeping up with with Philadelphia and supporter Shield, it
just feels like that's one of the big storylines here
over the remaining couple of matches of twenty twenty five.
Speaker 2 (32:18):
And I believe what Tyler Heaps believes, which is this
Marcus embarks In is going to be that guy we
use this phrase in the NBA load management. So I'm
expecting them not only to win the Conference, but I'm
expecting San Diego, i f C the finest city, to
handle the supporter shield as well and beat LAFC do
something as well. LAFC had to wait till year two
to get that done. So maybe, just maybe with what's there,
(32:41):
there are enough ingredients to chase down what was probably
an impossibility. But again, let's get ahead of ourselves. There's
still a long way to go and a large playoff
picture to still kind of fill out.
Speaker 6 (32:52):
But we like where this is headed.
Speaker 9 (32:55):
You know, For as much as Mike's always saying, yeah,
I'm just being present just in the moment about the
next match, he has said that they have already started
identifying a couple of things they don't want to wait
till the end of the regular season in the beginning
of the playoff to address things they think that need addressing.
And I think that was a really really interesting look
behind the curtain for Mike to say, like, we're not
(33:17):
going to be hyper focused on just preparing for the postseason,
putting guys in bubble rap et cetera. But he did
say we do not want to wait to the break
from the end of the regular season the beginning of
the postseason. If there are things that we feel like
might might hold us back in postseason play, we're going
to start addressing them now. And I thought that was
a great thing for him to share with us. So
(33:38):
it's not the primary focus, but it is something that
they're already taken into consideration.
Speaker 2 (33:44):
So no MLS action this week with the international break,
but it's anything but quiet for San Diego FC. Ten players,
that's right, Ten ds have been called them internationally. On
Deres Dreyer with Denmark and Panama, Paddy McNair captain of
Northern Ireland, and any Balaki will be with Finland. They're
(34:06):
all off for World Cup qualifiers. Then you've got Irvin
Chukilosano con Mexico, look care with the United States both
heading away for international friendlies Japan and South Korea. And
it doesn't stop there. Oh no, it does not stop there.
Four of sdfc's young prospects, Louka Bombino, El Bombini, duranferee
(34:29):
under the three pipes representing Pedro vote for Pedro Pedro,
Soma and David Basquez are all with the US under
twenties for their training camp in Hispagna.
Speaker 6 (34:39):
So yes, that's ten.
Speaker 2 (34:41):
Katia DS representando INTERNATIONALFC.
Speaker 8 (34:46):
Des being called up by your national team as an honor.
Only a handful of players get to ever experience it.
It means you're one of the best, and I will
always be great for any team I believe. Of course,
there's always a risk in your players will get more
mileage on their legs, but the experience factor and the
confidence it brings to your players will always be good
(35:07):
in my opinion.
Speaker 2 (35:08):
But it also can represent a problem back home. Darren
Smith for San Diego C, how do you how do
you weather the greatness in that you have to give
up ten of your most important elements to go represent
their countries. It's a huge boost for your squad to
be recognized internationally. And I know Mikey Bodis has told
you many many times, has told me, has told Warren
(35:28):
that is very important to the brand to him, so
he'll figure out how to weather this storm.
Speaker 1 (35:33):
Are you?
Speaker 9 (35:33):
Are you saying you're a believer in the FIFA virus right,
the FIFA virus that everybody goes through. I mean it's
actually already bitten SDFC off when Patty McNair in June
and hasn't quite been the same since but you know,
here's the thing. When you have somebody like Tyler Heaps
and Mikey about us and their experience working for US Soccer,
they've been on the other side of this, so they
understand how important it is for players to get called up.
(35:55):
Bazello Cooljay said, don't call to comeback for some of
these guys either, you know, guys like like Irving Losano.
Speaker 6 (36:00):
I remember when he signed.
Speaker 9 (36:02):
I'm not going to mention any names, but we're friends
with some of the people, the pundits who said, oh
that's the end for Irving, isn't it.
Speaker 6 (36:09):
Oh yeah, I've been reminding them of their works. This
is the end of his career. He's been called up
not once now but twice.
Speaker 8 (36:16):
And Twoki would have been called up even before had
it not been due to injury that Nations League that
was played in LA like he would have been part
of that Mexico squad. And also what I really liked,
and I just remember when we talked to Tyler Heats
and we asked him, are you ever going to be like, hey, guys,
maybe you can have two under twenty guys, but not
(36:36):
all of them because we're going to be struggling a
bit without them, and he was like, no, absolutely, out
of the question. We're not going to be a club
that does that to these young players. Whenever possible, we
are going to give them the opportunity and the wings
to go be with the national team. And I think
that's very special.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
So no as DFC match this weekend, guys, But I
want to leave you with the party shot.
Speaker 6 (36:59):
Guys.
Speaker 2 (37:00):
This has been a beautiful season so far, and we
expect more greatness moving forward. I know they set the
bar so high now. The expectations are high. But let's
talk about our favorite goal favorite momento.
Speaker 6 (37:09):
Ladies.
Speaker 2 (37:10):
First, what has been your favorite goal scored so far
this season? Since we're talking about goals today.
Speaker 8 (37:15):
My favorite goal has to be Chucky's banger. It meant
so much for him and absolute glosso it was just
beautiful because of how that play starts at that game
against Kansas City where he does that tackle, gets the
ball back, then Dryer serves him the ball in an
(37:37):
absolute beauty with that rocket. So I'm going to have
to go with that Chucky's goal. And speaking of tackles,
today's week one of the NFL. The NFL is back,
so we're happy.
Speaker 2 (37:46):
To that's right, well to charge of power. Good job,
that's a great shout out. Bring that energy, Darren Smith
your favorite goal, yo.
Speaker 6 (37:54):
Well, I'll go a little bit nerdier on that.
Speaker 9 (37:57):
Go back to match day three when SDFC was playing
at Real Salt Lake. It was cold and we didn't
know much about the club, and I remember it was
just such a defining moment because it was one one
late and you think, okay, we've all seen enough football
to know that this is when managers are just going
to shut it down. And SDFC kept going for it
and going for it and going for it and underscored
(38:18):
in the ninety first minute the bully but.
Speaker 3 (38:21):
It's lose a son, It's Dryer Goad Anders Dryers third goalie.
Speaker 9 (38:26):
Three games and he put ce Diegle in front and
stop it's time. And I just thought, Wow, this is
pretty special what they're doing here. They're not going to
be a run of the mill, cookie cutter club in
Major League soccer. They are going to keep going for
it up until the final whistle. And that was the moment.
I think we learned a lot about what SDFC was
all about.
Speaker 2 (38:44):
And for me, favorite moment is exactly that that game
against the Galaxy, that first one at the Murph Dragon,
just because of the moment with the fans and that
connection and it was.
Speaker 6 (38:54):
Almost like I cuued them up. It was. It was
surreal sing it.
Speaker 2 (39:01):
But I also have to point towards that opening night
where and there's Dryer establishes his presence and boy has
he done.
Speaker 6 (39:09):
It this season. So this week it's all about Goli.
Speaker 2 (39:18):
Next week it's about stopping them. The tackles, the blocks.
We're gonna hear from the mc smash brothers. That's McVay
and McNair, cj Do, Santos, Federals, Rod Wilders by the Door,
and so much more as we look at the fortress
that is as dfc's back line. That's all for this
(39:39):
week's Behind the Flow. Big thanks to Andres Dryer, Tyler Heaps,
and of course the very best Gantia and Darren, But
most of.
Speaker 6 (39:47):
All, thank you for listening.
