Fresh from breaking MLS expansion records for most wins and points in a single season, San Diego FC are in celebration mode — and so are we.

This week, Behind the Flow brings you something special: the full, unedited conversation with Hirving “Chucky” Lozano.

A few weeks ago, Chucky featured in our Hispanic Heritage episode — but so many of you asked to hear the whole interview, we just had to share it.

Speaking in Spanish (with translations from Adrian García-Márquez and Katia Castorena), Chucky opens up about his love for San Diego, family life in the Finest City, his on-field partnership with Anders Dreyer, and his hopes for the future with SDFC. And yes… he finally tells us how he got that nickname.

Adrian is joined by ESPN’s Katia Castorena and San Diego Sports 760’s Darren Smith to relive the record-breaking 4–2 comeback against Houston Dynamo, reflect on what the expansion milestone means for the club, and introduce this special sit-down with the face of the franchise.

From mischief at Pachuca to tears at The Shell, from national hero to San Diego’s heartbeat — this is the Chucky Lozano special.

But first because I mean you could hear. We're in
a party mood right now. In San Diego.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
Over the weekend, the boys made history, setting a new
and the new greatest expansion side ever. That's right, and
my last expansion records for both the wins end points
in a single season.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
And well, you're an you have a problem. It's under the.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
Driver, because that's DFC just can't stop breaking records and
he can't stop scratching him up.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
Let's take a listen to what happened, and we.

Speaker 5 (02:19):
Are underway match day thirty eight.

Speaker 6 (02:21):
I headed up into dearbyke of toy, take it on
the volley by liquor.

Speaker 4 (02:28):
The lead bay.

Speaker 6 (02:30):
Has put you sit in front. He comes driving Towardy
eighteen right inside, put back across. Oh and it trickles
right across the gold mouth. Drew Fisher going over to
the monitor to have another look to see if Pabo
or Tease was guilty of a foul. So a penalty

(02:52):
coming the way of San Diego. The light in front
of the Houston supporter section. Tryumph Willie up the right
hand side. He puts it across Pelagreno waiting and it
falls and it's into the.

Speaker 4 (03:10):
Back of the night.

Speaker 7 (03:12):
Luca Dellatore has fired San Diego in front, but here's
a giveaway and here comes Santos Santime, Here's.

Speaker 6 (03:23):
Here's Trier and he gets into Pelogrino, back.

Speaker 4 (03:26):
To dry.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
Just like that.

Speaker 6 (03:30):
San Diego back in front, Taverskov wins it, pel Agrino
coming forward to trying to put it away.

Speaker 4 (03:36):
Pelagreno.

Speaker 6 (03:38):
That was the last kick of the ball for San Diego.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
They go back to the top of the.

Speaker 6 (03:43):
Western Conference table. They have set an MLS record.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
So it started with Houston taking the lead early, but
San Diego flipped the script after halftime and there's Daya
leveled it from the spot.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
Then combined with.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
Luca del coming off the bench and I'm Pelagarino.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
Turning Peligros and turned it around.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
Houston equalized late, but within minutes Andres Dreyer struck again.
Barda bar Bam bam, Baldero to Pellegrino, Hey, Pelagrino to Baladero,
sealing it and ending it a four to two comeback.
Eighteen wins, sixty points, the best debut for a Major
League Soccer expansion side ever Darren, you followed every kick

(04:27):
of this campaign.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
How big is this achievement? Bump buying? What stood out
to you in that second half search?

Speaker 5 (04:33):
Adrian, I think we've all talked about this from the
moment that we first went on the microphone. We talked
about waiting thirty years for an expansion club in Major
League Soccer. So now to have the greatest expansion team
ever during the regular season with eighteen wins and sixty points,
those are ridiculous achievements and everybody deserves credit, from the

(04:55):
people that brought the club to San Diego, the people
that built the club, the people that coach it, the
people that's the people that play. There aren't enough words
to talk about what kind of achievement this is. So
was thrilled to be a part of it, was thrilled
to see every single second of it. And people in
San Diego deserve.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
This absolutely, and in fact, for those that was born
and raised in the region, Borderland kids like Kattia and
myself and Gottia, I want to ask you, they said,
can we accuse some nice music, emotional music Lesa Musiones
Gottia For San Diego fans.

Speaker 8 (05:24):
It feels very special. Muya Spezil for sure that you're
talking about the possibility of having more MLS teams, But
if that doesn't happen, San Diego will be the most
successful club ever as an expansion club. So when you're
thinking about a club being born from the ground up,

(05:45):
seeing how it just came to be with all the
pieces that you need for it to happen as Darren described,
and now for it to translate in wins and successes
in everybody cheering, I mean, wh don't we talk about
it being special, Adrian, And you know it because we've
been in San Diego. We've experienced our fair share of

(06:07):
heartbreak after heartbreak when it comes to sports. I'm like,
come on, when you talk about San Diego, say city
and in sports, it's a city that hasn't celebrated a championship.
And every single year the Padres break your heart, the
Chargers left, and so on and so on. So now
to see this club come to life after waiting for

(06:30):
so many years and being able to celebrate as a
season thus far being so successful, it is pretty remarkable.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
God, you don't mention the Padres and the Chargers.

Speaker 8 (06:42):
I'm sorry, sorry, but it is the truth.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
It is the truth.

Speaker 1 (06:48):
And what the truth also shows us is that this
team Guys was carefully crafted.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
Craftsmanship too.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
Gondiscena right, especially the presidence of Irn Tchukiosan and how
he's paid off his Latino.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
Influence on the team.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
Everything that it mean Losano has been just like I'm
d or the rest of the club. Everything was carefully,
meticulously I'm not gonna say planned, but it was part
of the idea. This is what was expected and expect
more success. And we've also seen guys a lot of
success because of the influence the Latino vibes. You feel
it at the Murf Dragon all of the time. It
mean Losano has a lot to do with that, but

(07:24):
the city of San Diego itself was waiting. It was
a dormant giant waiting to burst onto the scene, and
that's exactly what's happened. And we've seen how the Hispanic
influence it Losano, Losano with San Diego and how that's
been a great marriage. We talked about this on the show.
So many people reached out to say how great it
was to hear him speak right here on the show

(07:44):
Behind the Flow and asked where they can hear the
whole thing.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
We got you.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
So we've thought since it's international breakwek we're going to
do it. Let's play you the full interview here we go.
I started by asking him about his arrival and that
unforgettable night at the show. Welcome and thanks for joining

(08:09):

Speaker 1 (09:16):
Okay, you mean as you say it was such such
a special night, special moment. You understood what San Diego
was all about, but you already had an idea having
come through here in the past. But it's great that
you say that you felt the great energy from San Diego.
You could advance for a better introduction. So I think
it's uh as you said, it's one of those special

(09:38):
cities that was just waiting patiently for football and here
you are with.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
The star power that you bring to the table. And
I know that you, as you said, you're very happy
to be here.

Speaker 8 (09:47):
Choky, that day that you were presented in front of
the media and you were very emotional. You had tears
in your eyes looking back when you reflect on that day,

Speaker 1 (10:59):
We wanted one of the those beautiful moments Irving as
you said that just sharing and those beautiful I think
as the San Diego fan base has shown you that
they're absolutely all in on Irving Losan and we want
to find out iring what about you know you talk
about momento momentos to momento, what has been your favorite
moment so far in the season, wearing the jersey like

(11:22):

Speaker 2 (11:23):

Speaker 1 (12:13):
And just talking about how he's so happy, so proud.
This has been a great journey. There are several moments
that he can point to that have been special. Wearing
the San Diego FC jersey has been the goals, it's
been the camaraderie, it's been the team, It's been pretty
much everything. It's been like a dream come true for
I losanod be here.

Speaker 8 (12:31):
Commentators say that you and Andres drivers have this telepathic
almost connection.

Speaker 4 (12:37):
Decent loss Commentari Conra and.

Speaker 8 (12:45):
Telepati the como and then combs who is done in

that connection that you guys had the totalment sire connection CNN, No.

Speaker 4 (13:02):
Krook is a momento? Is a connection there?

Speaker 2 (13:11):
I kurkumos me connectos pero when yogur quel.

Speaker 4 (13:24):
Is is a momento the connection Croque is the ambassa partist.

Speaker 3 (13:35):
So i'r been talking about it goes both ways.

Speaker 1 (13:38):
With the connection that he has with Andrews Dreyer, game
by game, it just seems like the maturity between the
both of them, the connection between the both of them,
it just seems to get better and better. It's a
constant communication, it's a constant growth, and it's two players
that understand that for this team to be successful, they
both have to be examples and do what they do
but the connection is just getting stronger by the day.

(13:58):
Ir ugar conel Pachuca, while Jones, we followed you throughout
your whole career, seeing you from day one. If that
young Kido Irving losant Biendo Irving Losano yea mayor in
San Diego, Kenedy. If that kid back in the day

(14:20):
a Pachuca could see Irving, now, what would he be thinking?

Speaker 4 (14:27):
No, your crook.

Speaker 2 (14:30):
A momentos Irwin Losano, tan Chico yokoroque and momento loke
locally savandando maximocho mas much mas okay I was saying

(14:51):
in La vida is the eye momentos on the kennis

Speaker 4 (15:06):
Gras sadios.

Speaker 2 (15:08):
Tenido's experience is parte la vida pro no yogurque.

Speaker 1 (15:14):
He is.

Speaker 4 (15:17):
Last having to you.

Speaker 1 (15:19):
So he would tell that young Irwin Losano to take
advantage of the opportunities, live the moment and understand that
it's been a gift and and thank goodness that he's
learned from all of those experiences to make him the
player that he is today. But he would definitely tell
that young Irbinsano just enjoy, enjoy, and and really just
keep playing passionately the way that he does. But uh,

(15:42):
you don't want to take anything for granted. Tough times
are going to come. It's ups and downs. Just fight
through it and enjoy it because there's always going to
be happiness at the end when you do things right.
And that's exactly where Irwin Losano feels right now. He
would tell a younger version.

Speaker 8 (15:55):
Of himself at that time, I was living in Mexico City.

Speaker 3 (15:59):
We were definitely younger and.

Speaker 8 (16:00):
Al momento mexicomos mascoven is. But one of my favorite
things about that time was definitely, even though it was hard,
making that drive to Pachuca to go cover the games,
go cover that team that.

Speaker 4 (16:11):
Was special.

Speaker 8 (16:15):
Mexico Okay lass isault especially and chuki comer pastes to
eat past this along the way to get to Pachucama
and Partidos Guando Estasto and La Banca Alentando Leipo and

(16:39):
Los Angeles del Campo as rand I'm telling. One of
my favorite moments was when he was in La during
that game against alf C and he's just on the
sidelines trying to give directions to his teammates, trying to
secure that result because of course it was a.

Speaker 4 (16:58):
High intensity game.

Speaker 8 (16:59):
Fhon who intenso commodity as no persando and este and
personal o come on leader, this stinto Chico Pachuca. So
the is a leader as compagneos now being that leader
to your teammates.

Speaker 4 (17:20):
Case auto experience differente.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
As his calls as he the ferrente la lave ferrente
you wann estate momento called experience.

Speaker 4 (17:34):
Wento muco you start the sta part, the part.

Speaker 2 (17:44):
You know tlo, then la cacha you like content they
started the litt val and.

Speaker 1 (17:54):
Just talking about those experiences as a younger player, you know,
looking up the you know the other guys when when
he was coming up through the system at Bachuka and
then now seeing himself on the other side the other
lens as now the veteran they got that nurtures. But
learning from so many experiences and always looking to help
the team. Life will teach you, Life will show you
those moments and you kind of grow from them. And
so many different experiences make you who you are. And

(18:17):
now it's just strange to him but comforting as well
to be on the other side and be a leader
now and somebody that's going to help the younger players.
Kind of like just the opposite end of the spectrum.
This is really bringing back some great memories and still ahead,
Chuki O'sano's going to talk about the fans in San Diego,

(18:39):
life with his family, and of course the true unedited story,
his version of that nickname that's coming up.

Speaker 3 (18:46):
Stay with us, Welcome back. You're listening to Behind the Flow.

Speaker 1 (19:04):
And today it's all about San Diego superstar Irbin Chukilosana.

Speaker 3 (19:08):
The club has made history.

Speaker 1 (19:10):
That four two comeback in Houston set a new expansion
record for MLS and wins and points in a single season,
a huge milestone for a team that bases a lot
of its identity on milestones. Huge and now San Diego
in their very first year, have written history again.

Speaker 3 (19:29):
They take the Baja Cup.

Speaker 1 (19:30):
They couldn't get that supporter shield, but they do get
the record at sixty points. And earlier we heard Chuky
talk about what it meant to arrive in the finest
city and the tears at his unveiling. Now he's going
to take us a little bit deeper his bond with
the fans, what family life looks like in San Diego
and how he's stepping into a leadership role, plus the

(19:52):
nickname story you've all been waiting for. Let's head back
into the conversation with Chukilosana Irwin Uhla. Connection of fans,
the fan connection, I mean, it's been it's been absolutely phenomenal.
I can I can see it. You can see Darren
can see when we're broadcasting the game. There's a special

(20:12):
thing happening between Irving Lolsano and the San Diego Football Club,
Faithful Irving Conos fans like connections Ms.

Speaker 3 (20:20):
Visto and mission is.

Speaker 1 (20:23):
Comasio paratist expert cat and Irving Losano in San.

Speaker 3 (20:30):

Speaker 2 (20:33):
Comoto momento que ma marabioso one or that Liso massa
Mali that list Carino Parames super special, thes a connection
that majos Simpremando and those and Alextra Caro Mexico and

(20:57):
election Naqui crookes impress Maravilloso especially ill respect to simpleman Mostrallodi, and.

Speaker 1 (21:18):
He says he's thankful, grateful for the respect that he has.
You know that he gets from the fan base. But
there's always been a connection between Irving and Mexican fans
in particular, it be it with anything he's done at
the club level with three, but obviously with San Diego
and having that support system, and he's felt like that's
been there since day one, since he arrived, and that
he's tried his best to also give that love back

(21:39):
and nurture them back as as a thank you for
the way that they've treated him and how they've been
marvelous all the way through his journey.

Speaker 3 (21:47):
So it's something very special for Irving.

Speaker 8 (21:50):
Here of course the face of the franchise. How's every
day life for Chucky in San Diego? Do the fans
approach you? Have you been mouthed out? How is that experience?
It is for PRIs Franks comos to the Arii in
San Diego, comionaldos and las cays como his experience.

Speaker 2 (22:09):
Party, mantas and maraboso cantata familia you wan of those
loose prena photo theme. Nothing on the problems can unto

(22:33):
is algo in cravely know it's come on, come on, respectato,
locate loca cho.

Speaker 4 (22:43):
Bora loco.

Speaker 2 (22:46):
Mao nothing on the problem darlasto like see she.

Speaker 3 (22:57):
And the people do follow them around.

Speaker 1 (22:58):
They when they obviously reckon I mean San Diego, but
it's been absolutely wonderful and marvelous that that connection. He
always takes the time to take a picture because he
understands how important that connection is to them, but how
important they are to him as well, and especially being
in San Diego, he's also nurtured that so whenever a
fan wants a moment, wants a picture, he's always willing
because he's very grateful for that love that he's always received,

(23:20):
especially now here in San Diego. I mean, uh been
a way we've watched, how you've you've come back to
to this this also defensive version, not.

Speaker 3 (23:33):
I Losano traves altrias.

Speaker 1 (23:37):
Basquagh has called you back into the fold because of
the irving Losano that has found himself the guy that
we're seeing here at San Diego FC. How much credit
do you give Mikey Baas for that?

Speaker 4 (23:50):
The Confianza d.

Speaker 2 (24:02):
Juego Paraos of your cro cases is bortante, okay, and
he croocases SMU Bortante, Crooke, Paramilo principally Conference Croques, memotiv
Mucho Star, Juan Salgo, Camo, Meganda, Croquette, Creso Estado and

(24:34):
Mutimo carojorandoms us even Knownamento los to merando parto mostra.

Speaker 1 (24:47):
So you talked about how Mikey has been able to
to like that fire through the workouts, but also as
has developed because Mikeys is an ultra offensive minded manager,
so it kind of plays into the style the Irving
wants to play. So it's been a great connection. But
most important is the confidence that Mikey has deposited him
the conversation and just the connection that he has with

(25:09):
the manager, which has brought out the best of Irving
Rossano and has brought up an optimum level of Irving Lossano.

Speaker 8 (25:17):
Just so the fans get to know. Took a little
bit more off the field. What is your life like
every day at home? Do you have a family tradition,
a hobby that you enjoy. Get familiar.

Speaker 2 (25:40):
Oh, the normalis Levantara Beni and Trenard Sali activites one
of these place hovis even on Meno is Celia familia

(26:05):
you know simpre so you know, person familiarity, activit.

Speaker 1 (26:14):
You know, and and he'ven talking about his everyday life.
It all starts and ends with the family, his family,
you know, taking the kids to school, getting them ready
for school, doing whatever it is that it takes to
being a parent. But then also he's got a sneak
in practice. He still has to mind Irving Lolsano as

(26:35):
a soccer player. But it's always going to be about
the familia and about making the kids breakfast. And as
you heard, got there asking him if if he conjures
up a little this unito yes, hey, you can tell
by the chocolate, definitely will make some breakfast for the familia.
And closing it out, Irving, can I take us through
because we get asked this question. I want you to

(26:57):
clear this idea up because so many have asked, where
did juki nickname come from? My at least as far
as I understand, it was a pachuca when you were
at the academy and you were scaring your compass and
you're hiding under the bed, you're popping up, and can
you kind of take us through that experience?

Speaker 3 (27:18):
I mean, they get about this.

Speaker 2 (27:22):
Pachuca, you know, I said, compos or Gondia cosas no imp.

Speaker 4 (27:36):
Okay is.

Speaker 2 (27:44):
You know.

Speaker 1 (27:46):
Guitar And he said that it was basically that when
he was at the academy. He's been there since he
was ten years old. He was always causing all kinds
of mischief, hiding, popping up out of nowhere, hiding their things.
And then they said, man, we're gonna call you Chuki.
U Covie was like, yeah, I'm fine with that. With
that nickname and Irving. One thing for sure is that

(28:09):
I know that there's two Irving Losano, Chuquy Losano, Chuqui
Losanol football list that Chukilosano the soccer player. That's the
track that we know. We see that that you know, yes, Hi,
I'm chok. You want to play, Yes, he's gonna roll.
But there's the Irving Losando and it's just refreshing to
see how you kind of bring both together. In San
Diego has been the perfect place. San Diego Sido Lugar,

(28:29):
perfect paraoneires has those personalit like Tennis and La Caja, Choky,
Irving Losan, La Persona, Kelos and Las Cages. The San
Diego y Cala, Francisia Comotes sier Toleso y Ultimmento, Trevista
lo Casio to Experienced Peromas Canada, Loke Representer San Diego

(28:51):
f C and premiergoxs.

Speaker 2 (28:54):
No the Parten and Sanio. You know is responsibly the
the the represents the Masalto possibly is a experancial differente.

Speaker 4 (29:16):
Ok.

Speaker 1 (29:19):
You know, you know, so he's talking about he wants
to continue this for many, many more years, but the
success has definitely been there. They're very proud of that success,
very proud uh to have that responsibility in year one

(29:40):
and turning this into a winning franchise. And and it's
not something that he's taken likely for him, it's a
beautiful experience. Has been one of the most beautiful experiences.
And he just wants to continue staying in the flowing.

Speaker 2 (29:59):
Simple to Casa usanlo.

Speaker 3 (30:08):
Now God Dan Darren.

Speaker 1 (30:09):
It stands out to me how easy it is for
him to just get into family mode.

Speaker 3 (30:12):
Right. He loves San Diego because can go everywhere, take
the kids to school. What stood out to you.

Speaker 8 (30:17):
Katia, We know what the Mexican national team means for
the people because of what football means in Mexico for culture.
So now him being in San Diego city that has
so many Mexicans, and that's what he said, mess Casi,
I feel at home in San Diego. And he takes

(30:38):
the time every time he's out and about in the
city to take pictures and sign autographs and spend that
time with the fans because he knows that he wouldn't
be who he is today without the support of the
fans along the way, and Darren.

Speaker 1 (30:52):
He credits his teammates also for this transition. In particular,
he really loves the vibe he's formed with under Dryer.

Speaker 5 (30:59):
And it's also which is part of his trail of success,
right his resume of success. Wherever he's gone, trophies have followed.
And this started early on right in Pachuca, and it
followed him to PSV and then it followed him to Napoli,
where they hadn't won in forever. So obviously everybody's hoping
that that is part of what he's bringing as well,

(31:20):
that he's not only a great teammate that he puts
up statistics and sells jerseys and all the other things.
But most importantly, when you think about Juki Lisana, you
think about the winner, you know he's got a great
resume in a history of success in places you know
that hadn't always had it, and so for him coming here,
what more would you want in somebody who's the face
of the franchise than somebody who's backed it up out there.

Speaker 3 (31:42):
On the pitch.

Speaker 1 (31:43):
So from mischief at Pachuca and becoming El Chuki to
tears at the Shell to becoming the face of the franchise,
Chuki Dosano has been exactly what.

Speaker 3 (31:53):
We thought he'd be. More than just a signing, He's
the heartbeat of San.

Speaker 1 (31:57):
Diego FC our Thanks to Itine, Chuki, and to you

Yes, I'm just gonna sign off singing and Choky.

Speaker 5 (32:26):
Every time, every time it is stuck in your head
for the right I was going.

Speaker 8 (32:30):
To say, that's for you, for everyone out there listening,
so that you have that stuck in your head for
the rest of the day.
