Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Santa gust a production of I Heart Radio.
Well hello there. As you know by now, the most
wonderful time of the year can also be the toughest
time of the year for Santa and his elves at
the North Pole. But he's made some upgrades, a new
jingle jangle technology and a new podcast to get the

(00:23):
word out. Let's check it. So this is it, you guys,
It's Christmas Eve already in the podcast is totally taken off,
like I'm about to. Before you do your thing, we
really should read some fan mail. Oh fan mail. You
know I love getting letters. Oh yeah, and they are
coming in hot. We got one here. This one's fresh

(00:45):
off the Jangle Jangle. Her name is Marston and she
lives in Chicago. Dear Santa, I love the podcast. It's
great to hear you answer questions from kids. But I
have a question for you, and he needs to be
honest with me. Are you real? Well? I wish I

(01:08):
hadn't heard that the belief for meter is dropping and fast.
This just isn't working, and I'm I'm afraid that Christmas
is say this machine, you know, I think this is
just a glitch. Santa. This who is me? Woe is me?
Draft fooie heck darn shoote double shoot poop. Look, enough

(01:32):
is enough? Guys. You two are my most trusted elves,
and I thought this was a really good idea. We
gave it our best, but it's just not working. Now.
I've got to get out there and get going before
it's too late. We've got to load the sleigh, hitch
up the range. None of that stuff matters. If the
belief ometer is in the red, you won't even gain
enough altitude to stand back. What is happening? A glitch?

(01:56):
Huh my, dear els, I am sorry, but this is
not working. But it's Santa. Wait. Oh what are we
gonna do? Oh? Step out of it and breathe every
We've we've got to keep it together. Okay, but what
do we do now? Well? I think I figured something out.

(02:17):
Yeah anything, okay, stick with me. Okay, So Christmas magic
runs on the joy of children. Okay? What if the
meter wasn't measuring joy? No, No, it's measuring doubt. Every
time someone doubts something, the meter drops, and Santa has
been doubting himself. We've been going about this all the
wrong way. We thought we had to get kids to

(02:38):
believe in him. But that's not quite right. No, no, no,
We've got to get Santa to believe in himself. That's
what I've been trying to do. You know, it's just
been too easy with all these little awesome boys and
girls who believe in Santa. About that little girl that
just came in off the jingle jangs, Yes, she's a
true skeptic. Absolutely. We gotta get Santa to talk to
her and convince her that he's real. I don't know,

(02:59):
talk to a nonbeliever. That's kind of crazy and risky.
What if it goes totally wrong and the belief of
meter just I don't know, implodes on itself. We can't
take that risk. We can't not take that risk. He sorry,
just forgot my cookies. Let me just reach across here
and uh no, no, no, I'm not staying. There's no ball.

(03:22):
I just came back from my cookies. Oh yes, you
are Santa ever Green? What's going on? Franche's right, Santa,
We can't let you leave. You gotta face your fears.
That's funny. I'm Santa Claus. Santa Claus isn't afraid of anything,
but you are Santa you're afraid that there are children
out there who don't believe you're real. Don't believe I'm real?
What I think I'm real? I mean this table feels real.

(03:47):
The hot chocolate you knocked over on your hand feels real.
I don't know, Santa A. The belief of meter is
dropping to critical levels right now. Quick, Snowball tug my beard?
Oh oh, this always works with the kids at the mall.
Als if they tug my beard, do they know I'm real? Yeah?
But Santa, Marston's not tugging at your beard. Snowball is.
And Marston can't see you because this is a podcast.

(04:09):
She's gonna need something deeper than that. Yeah, well, put
in a sound effect. She'll be able to hear it.
It's just not the same the kids at them all,
of course, they believe in you. You're right there in
front of them. She has to believe in something a
little deeper than that. I think you need to call
her and quick. Your belief a meter is dropping dangerously low,
and if it drops any lower, your sleigh won't get

(04:30):
off the ground. But but I can't talk to a nonbeliever.
That's like crossing the stream. But Santa that's part of
the problem. People aren't talking to each other anymore, and
so you have to talk to this little girl. If
anybody can renew Marston's faith, it's you. Boy. This is
making me who where? What is this feeling? I've never

(04:51):
felt this before. Maybe we shouldn't do this call. I'm
just a b a fat No, you're not Santa, and
quit criticizing your rakes believe a meter plunging because you
aren't believing in yourself. Santa. Oops, I've already down the
number and she's about to pick up. Well, I guess

(05:13):
you've left me no choice. Hello Seasons, Greetings from the
North Pole. This is Evergreen, y elf? Who am I
speaking with? WHOA? What a day for Santa Claus. He
knows he's real, We know he's real, But he's about
to talk to a little girl who isn't so sure.

(05:34):
What will he say? What will she say? Tune into
tomorrow Santa Cast to find out the gosh honest truth
about Christmas. This episode of Santa Cast was recorded in
the North Pole by Evergreen and Snowball with your host
Santa Claus. Special thanks to our friends Brad Brinkley, Hannah Feerman,

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
