Speaker 1 (00:06):
Sound Off with me Folks on what may be the
most impressive win of the season for the Boston Celtics.
This is the sound Off postgame podcast presented by Exfinity
Mobile and Listen. Some might say the win over the
Pistons was the best win of the season. Some might
say the first win over Orlando was the best win
(00:29):
of the season. Some might say the first win against
this very same Cavs team was the best win of
the season. I say tonight was the best win of
the season. And here is why. The Boston Celtics were
playing on the second night of a back to back.
The Boston Celtics were down two starters in Derek White
(00:51):
and a Miyashkaida. The Boston Celtics were playing against a
sixty four win team from last season, and yet somehow
none of that mattered. The main reasons why were Peyton
Pritchard and Jaln Brown. There's no question about that. Peyton
Pritchard season high forty two points and listen, I knew
(01:14):
he had it going when he drilled one of his
shots about a minute into this game. It was an
ISO step back like double crossover shot from beyond the
arc against Darius Garland, and I guess it wasn't from
beyond the arc because his toe was on the line
countered as a two. But at that very moment, I
(01:35):
knew Peyton Pritchard had it going. He was just dripping
with confidence. The way that he stepped into that shot,
the way that he made that shot.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
You just knew it was going to be a big night.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
And it was forty two points in the game, second
forty point game of his career, just in unbelievable performance
from Peyton. And then Jalen Brown also logs his fourth
triple double of his career on the same night that
Peyton Prichard scores forty two and Jalen actually benefited quite
(02:15):
a bit. Let's just say that, actually these two guys
benefited quite a bit from each other because six of
Jalen Brown's eleven assists were two Pritchard, So these guys
were playing off of each other. Again, Peyton scores forty two,
(02:35):
Jalen triple double. Six of Jalen's eleven assists were on
passes to Peyton Prichard after which he made a shot.
These guys were just a one to two punch that
the Cleveland Cavaliers simply did not have an answer to.
And Jalen really has been seeing the floor well this season.
(02:56):
He's truly elevated to another level. I don't think anyone
can question that. I'm actually surprised that he's not getting
as much MVP love as I believe that he deserves.
I haven't heard his name in that conversation a whole lot.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
It should be in there.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
I'm not saying he should be at the top, but
given what he's doing, carrying this team and making them
competitive every single night right now, eleven or nine on
the season, this team's been playing really strong basketball since
the opening week or so of the season, one of
(03:32):
the better teams in the East. Since that opening week
of the season, Jalen Brown has been awesome and I
think his name should be in that conversation nationally much
more than it has been so far this season. All right,
quick word from our sponsor, Exfinity Mobile. Celtics fans want
(03:55):
to keep your phone as fresh as your kicks. With
Exfinity Mobile, you can upgrade to a new device every year,
So send that old phone to the bench and stay
ahead of the game. Exfinity imagine that. Now, let's talk
about why else the Celtics actually grabbed this win because
(04:16):
it wasn't just Peyton, Pritchard and Jalen Brown doing it
on their own. So many guys stepped up during this game,
and this has been the story of the season for
the Celtics on any given night, Like you generally know
who the main contributors are going to be, right Jalen
Derek White, Peyton Pritchard, Sam Hauser, Anthony Simeon, Like you
(04:41):
know that you were generally what you're gonna get from
these guys. But the rest of the crew, like someone
always steps up, and tonight it wasn't just someone, It
was a bunch of people. This win wouldn't have happened
without guys like Jordan Walsh, Xavier Tillman Senior, the aforementioned
(05:03):
Anthony Simons, Baylor Shireman, other guys like everyone filled in
and stepped up the exact way that the Boston Celtics
needed it in this game on this night, Jordan Walsh
crashing the glass, making shots like a beautiful fade away
(05:24):
swish in the lane during this game, like we never
see that from him. He did things tonight that we
haven't seen before, and that includes logging the first double
double of his career. Jordan Walsh finished this game with
fourteen points and eleven rebounds. Can you imagine if the
(05:46):
Celtics get anything close to that on a nightly basis
here moving forward the rest of this season, next season,
et cetera stays within himself only seven makes, four of
them cutting off the basketball, finishing around the rim, made
(06:07):
a three point shot, got to the free throw line.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
I mean, you can't.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
Ask for much more out of this guy. And he
grabbed two steals and blocked a shot in this game.
Jordan Walsh has turned into a completely different player over
the last month or so of the season. It's been
awesome to watch. And now the Celtics it looks like
have a real player, not only for now, but for
(06:39):
the future. And what's a great indicator of that on
this night when the Celtics upset the Cavaliers on the
second night of a back to back on the road,
without two starters and against a sixty four win team
from last season. Who led the Celtics in minutes? The
(07:04):
answer is Jordan Walsh thirty eight plus minutes in this game.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Leads the team.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
Joe Mizula couldn't take him out. That's thirty eight plus
minutes out of forty eight. So Jordan Walsh was on
the bench for literally less than ten minutes of playing
time during this game. That's how good he was, That's
how impactful he was. Joe Missoula couldn't take him out.
(07:36):
So just another stepping stone game for Jordan Walsh as
he continues to build confidence, continues to carve out a role,
and continues to show other teams I am an impact player.
But again we rattled off a long list like it
wasn't just Walsh of guys stepping up. Xavier Tillman senior,
(08:00):
he steps in for a spot start, whin Namias Keida
out six rebounds, three steals, a block shot, scored nine points,
Like literally did everything you would want out of him
in that spot start situation. Anthony Simons eighteen points off
the bench, scored sixteen of them during the first half
(08:22):
to really get the offense humming. Celtics needed those sixteen
points during the first half, and he gave them to him.
Baylor Shire mean even like not big numbers off the bench,
but gave the Celtics a really solid fifteen minutes hit
a huge three during the third quarter when Cleveland was
(08:43):
making a run, and really, like the list goes on
and on, but those are the main guys who really
stood out as others outside of Jalen and Peyton, who
really stepped up and delivered to give the Celtics exactly
what they needed to win this game. This game was
(09:04):
the definition of a team win and the only way
you're gonna grab a win under the circumstances of the
Celtics faced tonight, which was playing on the second night
of it back to back, you're down forty percent of
your starting lineup and I'm not counting Jason Tatum in
that that would be sixty percent, and you're playing against
(09:24):
a team that won sixty four games last season, was
the number one team in the East. The only way
you are going to grab that win is if you
play outstanding team basketball at both ends of the court.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
And that's exactly what the Celtics did tonight.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
Just an awesome win by the Celtics in my mind,
the best win of the season given the circumstances, given
what they got from guys who had to step into
other roles, who had to step up and give the
Celtics a little bit more then they typically need to.
That is why I believe that this was the best
(10:06):
win of the season to date. All right, let's dive
into some comments from our fans. We got two of
them tonight. Matt Clark is up first. He's got a
comment on the Celtics getting better and better as the
season wears on. And then we've got Gulu Gulu on
how close the Celtics are to competing for a top
(10:28):
seed in the East.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
I think you're a wonder. Put your mobile bill in
half and save sixty five dollars a month for your
first year with Expinity Mobile.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
All right, folks, As I said, Matt Clark is up first,
and here is his comment after this win. He says,
no tanking, Trying to win games makes you better. They
are getting better and better and there's no question about that.
This is my commentary now. Well, first and foremost, no tanking,
like tanking is not in the Celtics vocabulary. Okay, Like
(11:11):
with the talent that is on this team, regardless of
the moves that happened during the offseason, like this team
still has a lot of talent, there's no tanking in Boston.
This team is in a situation where it can absolutely
compete for a playoff spot and then who the heck
(11:31):
knows what can happen in the Eastern Conference. We might
touch on that a little bit later in our next comment,
but there is no way the Celtics are gonna tank
because they have too much talent to even think about
doing that. They can win games as we're seeing right now,
and to your point, Matt, trying to win games makes
(11:53):
you better. Absolutely every single player on this roster who
is playing in an environment where the Celtics are doing
everything they can to win games that makes them better
on a nightly basis. Everyone is benefiting from this. Nimiash Kida,
(12:13):
Jordan Walsh, Baylor Shireman, Josh may Not, Hugo Gonzalez, like
all of these guys are benefiting. Luca Garza is not
just about having an elevated role compared to what they've
had in the past. It's about doing that within a
team that is competitive and trying to win on a
nightly basis, and not only trying to win, but is
(12:35):
winning a lot.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
Celtics have been very good. Again.
Speaker 1 (12:40):
We're gonna touch on that again in our next comment,
but like the Celtics have been pretty damn good for
most of this season. So putting those young and developing
players into an environment where the team not only can
compete on a nightly basis, but wants to compete and
(13:02):
is winning games regularly. That makes those guys better. That
helps teach them how to win, and that memory and
going through that that experience is certainly something that can
impact guys down the line. You think Jalen Brown didn't
benefit early on from playing on a team that was
(13:23):
trying to win. You think Jason Tatum didn't benefit from
playing on a team early on that was trying to win.
They absolutely did, and that helped to elevate them even
faster in their careers because they understood how to win games.
These other guys, these young players on the Celtics are
(13:44):
getting that experience right now. They are getting better and better.
And that's what we're going to talk about now in
our next comment. All right, next comment as coming in
from Gulu Goolu, who says this team is just a
Jason Tatum away from first seed in the East. I
predict third seed if team stays relatively healthy and Tatum
(14:09):
returns in February. Okay, there's a lot to unpack in
here a lot to unpack, And first and foremost, we're
just gonna say we have heard nothing about Jason Tatum
coming back this season. It's all speculation. No one knows
if that can or will happen. But what I can
(14:30):
say is what Goolu Gulu said here, is that this
team looks like it can compete in the East without
Jason Tatum. Like, let's look at the standings. Celtics aren't
that far out of it. Okay, they just beat the
number one team in the East last week in the
Detroit Pistons. The Celtics are eleven and nine on the season.
(14:57):
They've got a top five point differential in the East.
And by the way, numbers one and two aren't that
far ahead. Numbers one, two and three, excuse me, are
not that far ahead. This Celtics team can compete. It
has shown it. It has now beaten the Cleveland Cavaliers twice.
(15:18):
It has beaten the Orlando Magic twice. Still got It's
beaten the number one team, the Pistons once, Like, there
are some legitimate wins here early on this season. It's
not just beating bottom feeders like they are beating good teams. Regularly,
including one team that could beat for an entire month
(15:42):
in the Pistons. The Celtics did just beat them at
home at the Celtics home obviously, but this team can compete. Now,
can you just imagine if Jason Tatum happened to be
added back into this lineup. Now, you also got to say,
(16:03):
if Jason Tatum does come back this season, which again
no one knows if that's gonna happen, but if he did,
he would still need a little bit of a runway
to get back to looking anywhere like himself. Like, no
one just comes back from that type of injury and
just immediately looks like themselves again.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
So would need to have a little bit of a runway.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
And I think that's why Goolu Gulu was saying that
if the team stays relatively healthy and Tatum returns, then
he's saying third seed or she. I'm not sure if
Goolu Gulu is a male or female, but I can
get down with that. I can see that. But in
the meantime, I want to point out a couple other
(16:46):
things here, okay, And they are records for the Boston Celtics. Okay,
they are now eleven and five since dropping their first
three games of the season, eleven and five. You want
to know what that win projection would be. You know,
if you win eleven out of every sixteen games during
the season, it's fifty six plus wins. That's the pace
(17:14):
the Celtics have been on basically for more than a
month now. So they're eleven and five since dropping those
first three games of the season. They're seven and three
in their last ten, and they've got wins during that
stretch over the Calves, the Pistons, the Magic like twice,
(17:36):
by the way, against the Magic. This has been impressive.
And the Celtics could have won last night like they
barely lost in Minnesota. This has been very impressive from
the Celtics what we have seen this season, and in
an Eastern Conference that is not exactly loaded with domin teams.
(18:00):
I mean, the Pistons have been great. The Raptors are
up there in the number two seed. At what are
they fourteen in six this season? Let's see, let's take
a look.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
Yeah, fourteen and six this season, fourteen and seven. They
lost tonight, But.
Speaker 1 (18:24):
I don't think anyone is saying, you know, the Raptors
are a sure bet to win the NBA Championship, you know. Okay,
So there are some teams up there that aren't exactly
teams that I don't think the Celtics or anyone else
are necessarily going to fear if they wound up facing
them in the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
I think the Celtics can.
Speaker 1 (18:39):
Compete against any of these teams. Now, we are going
to find out very soon about one of those other teams,
and that is the New York Knicks.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
That is the next team that is on the docket
for the Boston Celtics.
Speaker 1 (18:55):
Celtics have a big week, okay, and they've had a
big week. Get started out last Wednesday. Actually, let's just
say this last Sunday a week ago. Orlando on Sunday,
then Detroit on Wednesday, then Minnesota Saturday tonight against Cleveland. Ooh,
that's a week right there, playing against four really good
(19:17):
teams right there. Now, moving forward, the Knicks Tuesday, we
had a little bit of a lowly team, the Wizards
on Thursday, and then on the second night of a
back to back the Lakers on Friday, and then the
Raptors on Sunday. We said it about a week ago,
we're gonna learn a lot about the Celtics over the
course of the next week or two. We're halfway through
(19:38):
that now, and I like what I'm seeing. You've got
to like what you're seeing.
Speaker 2 (19:45):
Now.
Speaker 1 (19:45):
We're gonna find out what this Celtics team looks like
against the New York Knicks for the first time since
the second game of the season. And obviously, the Celtics
lost that game back on what was it October twenty
fourth ten point loss. Celtics were competitive, just couldn't really
score the basketball the way that they would anticipate. But
(20:07):
Celtics have been rolling since then again, eleven and five
in the last sixteen to seven and three in their
last ten. This is going to be a heck of
a game Tuesday night. It's happening at td GUARD and
the Boston Celtics are back home. They will host the
Knicks at eight o'clock on Tuesday night. And I can't
wait for you to send me in your thoughts after
(20:29):
that game so I can work a couple of your
comments into the postgame podcast sound off presented by Xfinity Mobile.
Thanks everyone for giving us a listen tonight, and I
can't wait to see what the Celtics do.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
On Tuesday Night against the New York Knicks. Have a
great night everyone,
