Ball Don’t Lie was on full display on Thanksgiving Eve as Cade Cunningham missed a potential game-tying free throw with 4.4 seconds left that came after a tough call that went against the Celtics. Boston, behind 60 combined points from Jaylen Brown (33 points) and Derrick White (27 points) dodged the bad luck and snapped the hottest team in the league’s 13-game win streak. We also gotta give some love to Baylor Scheierman for his impact and ability to steady the ship for the C’s after a shaky start as a team.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
The sound pop would be on ball Don't Lie.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Tell me you didn't love this moment Wednesday night on
Thanksgiving Eve. I am so thankful that we all got
to experience that. That was one of my favorite ball
Don't Lie moments that I have ever seen in an
NBA game.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
So let's recap it.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
But first, this is a sound off postgame podcast presented
by Exfinity Mobile. We appreciate you tuning in either on
YouTube or your favorite podcast platform. As I said, this
was the definition of ball don't Lie. In a little
bit of irony here because the term ball don't lie
became ever so popular because of a former Detroit Pistons player.

(00:46):
For any of you that can throw it back to
the nineties and early two thousands, Rashid Wallace is the
guy who made ball don't Lie become famous, Okay, and
he became his most famous because of his time with
the Detroit Pistons. Time a player would miss a free
throw after he thought that it was a bad call
to send him to the free throw line, he would
scream out.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
Ball don't lie. And that's exactly what happened.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
At the end of this game, the Celtics were up
by three points, the game was pretty much iced. They
were going to commit a foul to send the Pistons
to the free throw line for two free throws. It
was just a free throw match, Okay, the Celtics make theirs.
Doesn't matter what the Pistons do, as long as the
Celtics don't turn it over and take care.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
Of the ball and make their free throws.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
Well, the Celtics are up by three and the Pistons
are taking the ball up the court after they fall
behind by three due to Boston's free throws, and Kate
Cunningham is followed by Josh may Not as he approaches
mid court. Now, initially the call was on the floor,
but very quickly Tony Brothers rushes in and changes the
call and says, no, he was going up for a shot.

(01:54):
I could not believe it. I don't think many people
in the arena could believe it. And then not only
was it called the three point attempt, but the referees
went over it and reviewed it and upheld it to.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
Everyone in the building's chagrin.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
Like, I don't think anyone agreed with that call, other
than maybe the Pistons, but they must have thought that
Kate Cunningham was getting into the gather as Josh might
not committed that foul. I thought in real time and
in watching the reviews which you're seeing here on screen,
that Josh may not got him and made contact before
the gather began.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
The refs chose differently.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
They sent him to the free throw line with four
point four seconds left to tie the game. All he
had to do was make three free throws. Free throw
number one, bang free throw number two, Bang free throw
number three.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
Ball, don't lie, baby.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
That thing bounced off the rim, fell off. The Boston
Celtics grabbed the rebound, they go to the free throw line.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
Peyton Pritchett.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
ICE's the game, and that's how this one comes to
an end.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
The Celtics earned this win.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
It would have been a shame if it potentially got
away from them because of that call. Because Josh may not, certainly,
as he started to commit that play in that foul,
Kate Cunningham was not shooting. I guess as he made contact,
maybe he was beginning his shot attempt, or at least

(03:27):
the gather to shoot it.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
That's what the rest determined.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
In the end, it did not matter because the Boston
Celtics figured out a way to win and Kate Cunningham
could not figure out a way to win, and that
was really the recipe for success. During the final minute
or so of the game, the Celtics were up by one.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
And they first forced a miss.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
Out of Kid Cunningham, who by the way, is playing
at an all NBA level, superstar level, like that guy
has cracked the code and taken his game to a
whole other place this season, So they forced.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
A miss out of him.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
And then in the final nineteen seconds of the game,
as the Pistons come out of a time out, they
force a turnover out of Kid Cunningham. It was a
perfect defensive play out of that time out. Jordan Walsh
switches on to onto Kid Cunningham on a switch as
Kate Cunningham takes possession of the ball. Then, just as

(04:20):
Cunningham begins to spin on a post move up or
at least a back to the basket move up beyond
the three point r Derek White, perfect timing reliable as always,
comes in pokes the ball away and it goes off
Cunningham out of bounds, and that was the biggest play
of the game outside of Cunningham missing the free throw

(04:41):
that could have tied it during the final four point
four seconds, So Derek White reaches in pokes the ball away.
Then the Celtics get possession. The Pistons have to foul,
Boston makes the free throws, goes up by three, and
at that point it's just a free throw contest, a
free throw contest of which the Boston Celtics won. And listen,

(05:01):
this is one of the biggest takeaways that we've got
to take away from this game. In particular, the Boston
Celtics found a way to win. And not only did
they find a way to win, but they did it
against the best team in the East. Again, this is
a fifteen to two Detroit Pistons team coming into tonight
a thirteen game win streak, the hottest team in the league.

(05:22):
I do understand that the defending champions out in Oklahoma
City are seventeen and one. I get that, but Detroit
was thirteen and oh in the last month. They had
not lost a game in a full month. October twenty
seventh was the last time they lost a game. Here
on November twenty sixth was the next time they lost.

(05:43):
So the Celtics found a way to win against one
of the best teams in the league, the number two
team in the league entering this game, and not only
did they find a way to win, but they found
a way to win close a close game. And this
is something that we've seen building in building in building
for the Celtics over the past month or so. After
a little bit of a dicey start to the season

(06:03):
where the Celtics were not making the plays they needed
to make to win close games, now we're starting to
see it happen consistently. It's happened a couple times in
the last week, a few times in the last few weeks,
and a couple weeks the Celtics are showing signs that
they have learned how to win close games. And more importantly,

(06:24):
as I just mentioned, not only did they do that tonight,
but they did it against one of the best teams
in the league, who, by the way, had already won
eight games this season by less by single digits. So
the Pistons entered this game with eight of their fifteen
wins single digit wins, so they had been winning close
games all season long. It was the Celtics who did

(06:45):
it to them tonight. One of the main reasons why,
and when I say reasons, it is two with an s.
Derek White and Jalen Brown. They took over during the
fourth quarter. It was a fantastic show to watch. They
combined score twenty consecutive points for the Celtics at one moment,
and that was at the most critical juncture of the game,

(07:05):
outside of those final seconds when it was a free
throw match and when the Celtics had to get those
stops against Kate Cunningham, like when the game was in
the balance for about five, six, seven minutes, it was
Jalen Brown and Derek White making all of the big
plays on offense that the Boston Celtics needed. As I said,
combine for twenty consecutive points, and that's exactly what you

(07:28):
want out of your two best players. And they are
inarguably the two best players who are active for the
Boston Celtics right now. Were not including Jason Tatum in
the conversation. We're talking about the guys who are out
there on the court right now. Derek White and Jalen
Brown are the two guys, and they combined to be
the two guys tonight sixty combined points and as I said,

(07:51):
twenty consecutive points for the Celtics during the fourth quarter
when the game was really hanging in the balance and
it was a matter of which team was going to
make the final move. They set the Celtics up to
make the final move, make the critical plays during the
final twenty thirty seconds of this game, and pull off
the upset win to go to ten and eight. And
by the way, ten and eight, this is the first

(08:12):
time this season that the Boston Celtics are two games
over five hundred. They are now six and two in
their last game last eight games. They are now ten
to five in their last fifteen games after opening the
season with three straight losses. This team is playing really
good basketball. They are surprising a lot of people, and
I've got a feeling that this is going to continue

(08:34):
throughout the season, especially now that they are building that
DNA of figuring out how to win close games together.
They didn't have any of that DNA at the start
of the season. Sure, there's a few guys who came
back from the championship season and from last season, but
this group as a whole did not have that DNA
of knowing how to win close games. Tonight is just

(08:59):
more evidence again and its resounding evidence that they did
it against the second best team in the league and
the hottest team in the league, that they were able
to do it tonight. So great science to see out
of the Celtics. And let's not forget about early on
in the first quarter of the Celtics came out of
the games. They weren't playing great basketball. They were struggling.

(09:20):
And who was the guy who steadied the ship? Baylor Shireman.
Shireman came off the bench scored ten points during the
first quarter, and the Celtics needed those ten points. They
were just struggling to get the ball through the basket.
Detroit was getting out in transition because Boston couldn't complete
their offensive possessions with buckets, and that transition game was
really it was causing cross matches defensively in transition if

(09:44):
the Pistons weren't actually scoring in transition. So Baylor Shireman
checks in, it scores ten points, and those ten points
really steadied the ship for the Boston Celtics. It was
like a calm the whole team down and from that
moment on that point on, the Celtics played really good basketball.
The rest of the way. So tons of credit going
out to Baylor Shyerman, who was one of the most

(10:07):
important pieces of the team tonight during this win. He
winds up playing thirty plus minutes during this game. That
goes to tell you just how much Joe Mizzulu was
trusting him during this contest. Finishes with thirteen points defended
very well. Spend a lot of time on Kid Cunningham,
who was exceptional tonight. Outside of those final thirty or

(10:29):
so seconds, Baylor Shireman was one of the critical pieces
to the Celtics being able to win this game, so
got to give a shout out to him. Great job
of coming off the bench and giving the Celtics exactly
what they needed tonight, and it started from the moment.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
He checked in.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
They needed scoring, they needed shot making, and he gave
it to them. He also made a big three pointer
during the fourth quarter, so that was fun to watch.
All right, let's dive into some comments from our fans
after this win. I sent out a post on social
or x make sure you guys tune in after every
game so that you can reply and send in your thoughts.
But I asked after the final buzzer, how did the

(11:07):
Celtics pull this win off. We got a couple replies.
The first one is from mister Elvis Piper, who brings
up the Celtics three point shooting. And then lastly we've
got Team Valor gym leader who has a bold statement
about the seas as a whole.

Speaker 1 (11:21):
So let's dive into the fan comments here. That's about.

Speaker 2 (11:26):
I think here one.

Speaker 1 (11:31):
Cut your mobile bill in half and save sixty five
dollars a month for your first year with Expinity Mobile.

Speaker 2 (11:41):
All right, folks, As I said, mister Elvis Piper has
a comment here saying about how the Celtics won this game,
how they pulled this off.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
Twenty for forty three from three.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
That's right, the Boston Celtics shot twenty of forty three
from three point range. That is forty six point five percent.
About as good as you can ask for during a
game against one of the best defensive teams in the league.
I believe that the Pistons entered this contest top five
in the league in defensive rating. Don't quote me, but
feel free to go look it up. I'm pretty sure
that is the case. And the Celtics come out and

(12:12):
shoot nearly forty seven percent from three point range against
this team. Now, we can't just talk about tonight. We
got to talk about the whole season. How much three
point shooting matters to the Boston Celtics. This team came
into tonight, actually let's just say after this game, after
shooting forty seven percent from three point range as a team,

(12:33):
now Boston is shooting about forty percent from long range
during their ten wins. During their eight losses, they're shooting
about thirty percent. So that's that's a twenty five or
actually a thirty three percent difference between what they're doing
in their losses around thirty percent and bumping that up
to about forty percent in their wins. It's a big difference,

(12:56):
and as you can see, that is a very important
part of the Boston Celtics finding success. And what's so
interesting to me about this team this season and figuring
out what they can pull off on offense. I don't
think many people came into this season thinking the Celtics
we're going to be a very strong shooting three point team.

(13:16):
But here they are in ten wins shooting over forty
percent from three point range, and a few people have
been surprising from that aspect. I mean tonight just alone.
You got Josh Mayno who hit a couple of threes.
Baylor Shireman hit three of five from long range. We've
seen Luca Garza, who started in this game. Didn't make

(13:37):
up three during this game, but he's shooting over forty
percent from three point range this season. These are guys
who I don't necessarily think many on the outside, but
Jordan Walsh won for two from three point range, also
shooting well from distance. These are guys who I don't
think a lot of people on the outside expected to
be shooting it at a high clip from three point
range heading into the season, But here we are. These

(13:58):
guys are all having solid seas from long range, so
they're replacing some of that production that went out the
door with all those trades and moves that happened during
the offseason. Celtics are still one of the best three
point shooting teams in the league. Could anyone have predicted
that when this season started, like, I don't think so.

(14:18):
Entering tonight's game, the Celtics actually ranked and I'm going
to pull this up right now, at the time, they
ranked eighteenth in the league in three point percentage. Well,
that number is going to go up right now, They're
going to be in the top half of the NBA
in three point shooting. That's pretty good for a team
that I don't think a lot of people expected to
be very hot from distance during this season, given all

(14:41):
the moves that happened during the offseason and so many
players who are playing in critical roles.

Speaker 1 (14:46):
Who don't have a whole lot of experience.

Speaker 2 (14:48):
So great job by the Celtics, not only tonight in
shooting nearly forty seven percent from three point range, but
we are learning that that is so important to their
success on a nightly basis. If they shoot it well,
they've got a great chance to win the game. Again,
ten wins this season forty percent from three point range,
eight losses this season thirty percent from three point range.

(15:09):
That just tells you how important the long ball is
to the success of this team on a nightly basis.

Speaker 1 (15:18):
All Right, Our.

Speaker 2 (15:18):
Second and final comment of the night coming in from
team valor Jim Leader, who says we're just built different
and again similar to the last comment, like, I don't
think a lot of people would have said that about
the Boston Celtics coming into the season, but here we
are thinking that the Celtics are built a little bit different.
And I've gotta harken back to what I said earlier

(15:40):
on in the episode that you can just see some
DNA being built in this team that is making them different.
They are a different team today on November twenty sixth
than they were when this season started. There is no
question about that. They are far and away a better team,
a more cohesive unit, a more dangerous team at both

(16:01):
ends of the court than they were when the season started.
They've learned each other's tendencies, they've learned what the team's
strengths are and they are playing to it. And also,
as we talked about earlier, they're figuring out ways to
win close games. And I've said this all season long.
This team is going to play a ton of close

(16:21):
games this season. So if they want to have success
in terms of win loss record, they're gonna have to
win a lot of close games. They're doing that, They
are doing that right now, and they weren't doing that
earlier on in the season. So certainly, team valor Jim
Leader says, we're built different. We are built different than
we were at the start of the season. You cannot

(16:43):
argue that this is a different team playing at a
different level than what they opened up the season, as
it has been a whole lot of fun to watch
this team come together, to watch Jalen Brown step into
an impressive role and what he's doing carrying the load
on offense. Tonight wasn't his best night, you know. Obviously
he did score thirty three points. He needed thirty two
shots to get there, but that's okay. He understood that

(17:07):
the team needed his offensive production and he went out
there and he gave it to them with his second
double double of the season. By the way, he stuffed
the stat sheet thirty three points, ten rebounds, five assists,
two steals, two block shots. Jalen got it done at
both ends of the court, and he is leading this
team right now. That's surprising a lot of people with
a ten and eight record. Derek White also played great.

(17:29):
Peyton Pritchards sixteen points. Derek White, I'll just rattle off
the numbers, twenty seven points and seven rebounds. Also had
a couple of three steals and one block shot. Talked
about Baylor Shyerman coming off the bench. It's so fun
with this group because you know, Jalen's gonna score about
thirty every night. He's been doing it all season long. Okay,
who else is going to step up? That's the best

(17:50):
part about this team. There's so many different guys who
are capable of stepping up on a nightly basis, and
there's so many guys who are playing different roles on
a nightly So that's the funnest part for me, is
to go into every game and you just get to
wait and see which guy's gonna step up. Tonight it
was Baylor Shireman joining along with forces with Derek White

(18:12):
and Jalen Brown who really put up like severe, severely
high production. Baylor Shireman was the next guy. And then
also we got to talk about Amary Williams, Like what
this guy had played seven minutes this season. Now tonight
he checks in and plays fifteen plus minutes.

Speaker 1 (18:30):
Not a huge.

Speaker 2 (18:31):
Statistical night, but had a couple of blocks, grabbed a
few rebounds. He was the guy who Joe Mizulu was
putting in at the end of the game to grab
rebounds with his seven foot frame. So just a lot
of fun to continue to watch every single night to
see who was gonna step up. Now we're a build
different Okay, We're gonna find out over the course of
the next week because the Boston Celtics, they've got a

(18:53):
heck of a schedule coming up Saturday at Minnesota, Sunday
at Cleveland, then coming back to Boston Tuesday to take
on the New York Knicks. Then they go on the
road to play against Washington on the fourth and back
home on the second night of a back to back
to play host to Lebron James Luka, Doncic and the
Los Angeles Lakers. So four of the next five games

(19:15):
against really good teams Minnesota, Cleveland, New York, and Los Angeles.
We're gonna find out here over the next week and
a half if the Celtics really are built differently. They're
showing it right now. Let's see if that DNA can continue.
I gotta say to all of you out there, thank
you for watching, thank you for listening. I hope you
have a wonderful and happy Thanksgiving tomorrow. Stuff your faces

(19:39):
and come back for the next episode of sound Off, which,
by the way, we will not have one Saturday night.
The next one will be coming in Sunday after that
game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Again, Happy Thanksgiving, thanks for
tuning in, and I'll see you again on Sunday.

Speaker 1 (19:55):
Thanks
