Speaker 1 (00:06):
Sound off with me, folks on the Boston Celtics running
into a buzzsaw Saturday night at td guard and listen,
plain and simple, this was just not Boston's night. It
was a bad matchup from start to finish. The Celtics
came into this season and as we know, every night
they take the court, they are ultra small. The Rockets,
(00:28):
on the other hand, are ultra big. And when I
say ultra big, I am telling you when you watch
them on TV, and if you watch them on film,
you look up some clips online, they might look big.
When you see them in person, it's on a whole
other level. Like they looked like they took up the
entire court with their size and their length and their athleticism.
(00:51):
That team was incredibly impressive during this game. And listen,
it's just not a good matchup for the Celtics. We
saw that unfold throughout the course of this game. Also
got to say that the Rockets came into this game
very fresh. They had not played since Wednesday. Meanwhile, the
(01:12):
Celtics just played last night and tonight was their fifth
game in seven nights. Houston only had played four games
all season. In the first week and a half, almost
two weeks of the season, only four games, so they
are very fresh, and they were very fresh coming into
this game. And meanwhile, the Celtics, they just flew back
to Boston last night after a win, and they just
(01:34):
didn't seem to have the same level of energy in
their bodies. What else do we gotta talk about here? Oh? Yeah,
how about the fact that some of the numbers that
came out of this box score were like, they're just
impossible to wrap. I can't wrap my head around them.
It's impossible to comprehend that some of these things actually
(01:55):
happened tonight. And two of them that I've got to
point out right from the get go. You know how
Joe Missoula all last season and the season before always
talked about shot margin. We gotta win the shot margin. Okay,
listen to this stat. The Celtics won the shot margin
by twenty five shots. Tonight. They took twenty five more
(02:16):
shots than the Houston Rockets and lost by twenty seven.
I don't know how that's possible. Like I think, any
night you say to Joe Mizula, you're gonna take twenty
five more shots than the other team tonight. What do
you think the result's gonna be. He's gonna say, win
nine times out of ten, maybe even ten times out
of ten. It's hard to lose a game when you
(02:37):
take that many more shots than the opponent. But here's
the other one that is the reason why Houston was
able to win this game. Free throw disparity. A lot
of fans are up in arms about this after the
game of listen like this, this is what happens. That's
a huge team playing against a small team. They're gonna
(02:58):
get to the line a lot. They've got great players,
super athletic players across the board able to get to
the line a lot. Houston took thirty five free throws
in this game. The Celtics took seven, thirty five to seven.
And entering this game, one of the keys in my
(03:21):
mind was playing without defending, without fouling. The Houston Rockets
came into this game ranked number one in the league
and getting to the free throw line thirty five attempts
per game. What do you know, they hit that mark
right on the head. The Celtics entered this game middle
of the pack in terms of attempts per game. Actually,
(03:45):
I think they might be in the bottom third might
have been in the bottom third, Well, they're gonna drop
a little bit more. But when you're playing against a
team that takes way more free throws than you on
average because of the way that team is built, you've
got to defend without filing in. The Celtics just couldn't
make it happen tonight. And that's I'm not saying, you
know that they didn't execute the game plan or anything
(04:06):
like that. They just played against a team that is
a bad matchup and we saw that unfold throughout this game.
Really tough night for the Celtics, and the Houston Rockets
certainly took advantage. I'm walking away from this game very,
very impressed by what I saw from that Rockets team.
That's a title contender. There aren't many teams in the
(04:27):
league that can match up with that type of size, athleticism,
and skill all combined together. Team is really good. It's
got a shot to win a championship this season. Now,
the one positive of the night that the Celtics can
take out of this is how Baylor Shireman looked out
on the court and listen, Joe Miszula had to go
(04:49):
and maybe pull some different names off the bench. For
some longer minutes during this game, and Baylor Shireman is
one of the players who capitalized on that opportunity. This
was one of, if not the best game of his
NBA career. I know that there's been some games where
he scored maybe a little bit higher or right around
(05:09):
this number, but tonight he just looked like an NBA player.
He looked like he belonged, and he looked confident. That
was the biggest thing that I took out of it.
He looked confident from start to finish. Finishes this game
as Boston's leading score. I'm pretty sure that's the first
time that's happened in his career. Seventeen points off the
(05:29):
bench in twenty two and a half minutes, shoots six
or seven from the field, four or five from distance.
And listen, you're not going to expect him to shoot
that well every night. It's not gonna happen. No one
can shoot it that high of a clip. But the
fact that we saw the confidence in that shot, I
think is going to open things up for him moving forward.
He hasn't shot the ball well this season, but if
(05:50):
he plays like that with that level of confidence, the
ability to impact the game at both ends, like he
had won two steals during this game. He rebounded the
ball with five boards, had one beautiful offensive tip in
for a bucket late in the game, like super athletic
play coming out of him during the final five or
so minutes of the game to tip that ball home
(06:12):
off the offensive glass. Like he showed a lot of
promise tonight. We saw some of it during the second
half of last season. Tonight, in my opinion, was the
first flash of it that we've seen this season, and
hopefully we see a whole lot more. Baylor Shireman excellent
performance tonight. Rough night overall for the Celtics, but that
is the one positive that you can take out of
(06:34):
this game. On Saturday night, he looked pretty darn good
against the Houston Rockets, and by the way he played
most of those minutes against Houston's top players like Ima
Judoka had a lot of their top players. Elprohn Shangund
was in the game, like midway through the fourth quarter
when they're up by thirty. It's because the team hasn't
played much this year. He wants to get them some run.
(06:56):
But it's not like Baylor Shyerman was playing against a
bunch of two ways or anything on the other tad
like he was playing against some very good players, and
he put himself together a pretty darn good night. All right,
we're only gonna take one comment tonight, number one because
of the result, number two, because a lot of the
comments were actually very similar. So we're gonna take one,
(07:17):
and this one's coming in from Matt Mascarenas. I hope
I'm saying that correctly, and he's got a comment on
what a lot of you had a comment on after
this game. So let's dive in to see what Matt
has to say right now. All right, Matt Mascaranas has
our one comment of the night, and he says, one
of those quote unquote scheduled losses, rocket's so tough to contain,
(07:42):
especially tonight shooting the lights out of TD Guard and
should capitalize against Utah and Houston next week before a
really fun and challenging mini series in Orlando. Need White
and PP to find their three point stroke. All right,
let's go one by one here. First part of the comment,
one of those scheduled losses. Yeah, you might be able
(08:04):
to say it, and sometimes really really really good teams,
even great teams might be able to win on a
night like tonight. But when you're playing for the fifth
time and seven nights against a team that has only
played four games all season and hasn't played since Wednesday,
and that team that you're playing against just so happens
to be one of the leading candidates to win the
(08:26):
NBA Championship this season, it's just not a good matchup. Okay,
So this did feel a little bit like a schedule loss.
And that's not to make an excuse. The Celtics still
had to play this game, give themselves a chance. They
weren't able to do it. Houston was by far the
better team tonight. Just a bad matchup on top of
(08:47):
a bad schedule situation happening for the Celtics and who
they were playing against. Boston didn't have a whole lot
in the tank. It was clear Houston had a full
tank all night long. Next part of the comment, Rockets
are so tough to contain, especially tonight, shooting the lights
out of TD Guard. And let's run through some of
the numbers of what Houston did tonight. That Rockets team
(09:11):
just shot sixty six percent from the field from three
point range, Like you shoot sixty five sixty six percent
for the You assume it's going to be just overall
or on two pointers. They did it from three point range.
It was crazy. Kevin Durant three threes, excuse me, two threes.
(09:35):
On the night, all five starters for the Rockets made
a three pointer. Josha Koge three of them, Kevin Durant
two of them, the other three starters one each. Then
Tarry Easton comes off the bench four for six, Reed
Sheppard off the bench four for five, Jeff Green off
the bench two for two. This was crazy that they
(09:58):
kept up this pace for the entire night, just shooting
the lights out from start to finish. So sixty six
percent from three point range, fifty five percent from the field,
and then of those thirty five free throws they made
twenty five of them. Just a really impressive offensive showing
from the Houston Rockets. They had it going from start
to finish. They never let up, and they kept the
(10:20):
foot down on the gas while they were dropping the
ball through the net from all over the court. What
Matt is saying here, they shot the lights out. Yes,
they most certainly did, all right, Moving on to the
next part. Celtics should capitalize against Utah and Washington next
week before really fun and challenging mini series in Orlando. Yeah,
(10:40):
the Celtics host a couple teams on Monday and Wednesday
at TD Garden, So we got a little bit of
a three game homestand here first ones out of the
way that didn't go so well. The next two are
against teams that are certainly not being regarded as high
level title contenders this season. Utah certainly in a rebuild state,
Washington in a rebuild state. The Celtics will have a
(11:02):
great opportunity to grab a couple of wins during those
games and for the first time get over the five
hundred mark if they can win those games. And then
they go down to Orlando a couple of games against
the Magic. That should be fun, first time seeing the
new look Magic with Desmond Bane in their lineup. So
the Celtics got an opportunity here try to get back
over five hundred for the first time this season with
(11:24):
a couple of home games that are coming up on
Monday and Wednesday. And then we'll have to just wait
and see what happens in those games against the Orlando Magic.
Last part of this comment need Derek White and Peyton
Pritchard to find their three point stroke. I can't believe
that these guys haven't found it yet. We're seven games
into the season and Derek White and Peyton Pritchard just
simply have not put the ball through the net at
(11:46):
the rate that we all have witnessed in the past
and expected here moving forward. The fact that the Celtics
grabbed the last three wins heading into this night. They
did have a three game winning streak heading into this
game Saturday night. The fact that they had won those
games while Peyton Pritchard and Derek White were basically non
existent from three point range said a lot in in
(12:06):
a positive fashion to me that the Celtics were able
to do to grab those wins and do what they
did in those three games, all while those guys didn't
shoot the ball well, because we know they are going to.
This isn't like they forgot how to shoot the ball. No,
or they're getting totally different shots. No, Like Peyton Pritchard's
taken a lot of the same shots that he took
last year. Derek White maybe a few more sprinkled in
(12:30):
of like pull up jumpers, challenged three pointers, But for
the most part, he's getting some pretty good looks too.
These guys are going to make shots. It's just a
matter of when. So hopefully that starts Monday night when
the Celtics hosts the Utah Jazz. We'll have to wait
and see. That's the game when they're gonna have a
chance to get back to five hundred. So again, that
game is coming Monday night at seven thirty at TD
(12:52):
Guardy and you can catch the game on NBC Sports Boston.
And as always, make sure you come back to X
and shoot me a comment after the final buzzer letting
me know what your takeaways were from the game, and
you might wind up right here in the next episode
of sound Off. Thanks for tuning in and I'll see
you Monday night.
