Speaker 1 (00:06):
Sound off with me, folks on yet another close game
slipping away from the Boston Celtics. That is four out
of six losses this season for the Celtics. They really
felt like the Celtics had a chance to win them
down the stretch, but they just let it slip away.
And that's exactly what Joe Mizzoula said after this game,

(00:29):
and I'm going to quote him here. He said, the
effort and physicality was there, we just have to be
able to execute on both ends of the floor throughout
a close game. He basically said that these games come
down to ten to fifteen possessions that you have to
play and execute well. This team needs to learn how

(00:52):
to do that and that will help them win these
close games. It's as simple as that, because trust me,
I promise you this. Throughout this season, they are going
to play a ton of close games within ten points
in either direction. They're going to play a ton of

(01:14):
those games. So if the Celtics want to finish with
forty five to fifty five wins somewhere in there, they're
gonna have to learn how to win these close games,
how to close out close games, and how to make
the most critical plays during close games. Tonight, it was

(01:37):
a four point game with less than five minutes to
play in one sixteen second stretch, let the game get away.
Here's what happened. There was about four and a half
minutes left. Nikias excuse me, Nimias Cada catches a pass
from Derek White in the paint. He basically has an

(01:59):
uncon tested layup, but he rushes it just to touch
and that layup attempt goes strong off the backboard, misses
off the rim, and then as he turns to go
back up the court, he kind of wraps his hands
around Gogobitase and gets called for a foul. Now, was
it a touch foul? Did they really need to blow
that whistle? Probably not. They didn't really need to blow

(02:23):
that whistle, but they did. And not only did they
blow the whistle, but it was also called a transition
take foul. So a questionable call. But I mean, he
did wrap his hands around him, so it is what
it is. But he misses the layup that could have
made it a two point game, then commits the take foul.
Desmond Bain hits the free throw and then right after

(02:43):
that on the ensuing possession because of Orlando keeps possession
of the ball, Desmond Bain steps into a three pointer
on a wide open attempt from the left wing that
was basically just blown coverage by the Celtics. So right there,
in a span of sixteen seconds, it goes from what
should have been a two point game to all of
a sudden being an eight point game, and Orlando is

(03:06):
building momentum, They're in their home arena, They've probably got
more talent across the board on their roster, and then
they pull away and the Celtics just couldn't get a
stop after that. Orlando wound up going a heap, I
don't know what it was like, thirteen fourteen points during
those final minutes, and they wound up winning relatively comfortable
during those final couple of minutes of the game. But

(03:30):
it's little stretches like that where one, two, three plays
go the wrong way, and that was three plays in
a row. One is the miss layup, two is the foul,
three is the blown coverage. All in sixteen seconds. Something
that small can change the tenor of a game and

(03:50):
the result of a game, and it did tonight. So
the Celtics have got to be able to clean up
those margins to win these tight games. We've talked about
this since the start of the season. This team this
season just doesn't have the same margin of error that
the last couple of seasons had, Like those teams were

(04:11):
so good and so loaded with talent that they could
make mistakes and still win. This team, it plays hard.
I credit them for that. It plays hard, and they
do have a lot of talent on the team, but
those margins just aren't as wide as they were. So
when you've got less of a margin to grab wins,

(04:35):
you have to make critical plays and you've got to
do it in particular when you're playing close games. Just
has to happen. So another learning experience for the Celtics.
They'll be able to watch this game look back on it.
Joe Missoula is going to show them those ten or
fifteen possessions where the game got away, and hopefully they'll

(04:55):
be able to turn that back and turn that learning
lesson into a win when they take the court down
there in Orlando yet again on Sunday night. A couple
other tea takeaways that I had from this game. Jalen
Brown just continues to cook. I put this out on
my Twitter during the game that it's literally like watching
prime MJ. Like, I don't know, some of you out

(05:16):
there are probably too young, you didn't get to watch MJ.
I'm a nineties baby, right I was born in the
mid eighties, so like my prime of watching basketball growing
up was in the nineties. I got to watch MJ
in his prime, the way that he felt unstoppable in
the mid range and just like making tough shots, creating

(05:37):
easy shots, blowing past defenders. What I used to watch
him feels like what I'm watching with Jalen Brown right now.
And I don't want to say that like lightly or anything,
Like Michael Jordan is the best player ever. He's the goat.
And I'm not saying Jalen is there, but right now
he is, like he literally is playing basically the exact

(06:01):
same type of basketball tonight. He was fifteen of twenty
two from the field. He is by far the most
efficient scorer in the league who is taking bulk shots.
His effective field goal percentage, which does not include different

(06:21):
percentages when you include free throws and three pointers, but
his effective field goal percentage, because he's taking the bulk
of his shots from two point range, is the best
among bulk scorers and shooters in the league. He was
number one in the league in field goal percentage entering
this game among players attempting nineteen or more free throws

(06:42):
excuse me, field goals per game. He was number one
in effective field goal percentage among those same group of
players entering this game, and that's probably only going to
go up after this effort again, fifteen of twenty two
from the field. Just is really commanding the game right
now and applying pressure to the opponent night in and

(07:03):
night out. Just really seems to be in a rhythm
that I'm not sure I've seen him in before. And
he's gone off for huge games. I think he's got
a fifty point game in his career. He's got a
ton over one hundred thirty point games, I think now
at this point. But right now he is in a

(07:23):
rhythm that I don't know if I've ever seen from
him before. Six out of ten games now he's eclipsed
the thirty point barrier that ties the most in the
first ten games of a season by any Celtic ever,
which is a pretty big deal when you're doing something
that basically only one other player in the history of

(07:45):
the most storied franchise in basketball has ever done. That's
a pretty big deal, in a pretty good indication of
just how great you have been. So it's been a
lot of fun watching Jalen Brown just completely cooked teams
in the mid range and make shots like it's as
if the basket is the ocean. He doesn't even have

(08:05):
to be locked on the rim and that ball is
still going and really really impressive. Another thing that stood
out during this game, finally we saw Peyton Pritchard really
turn a corner with his scoring in a shooting finishes
this game with twenty seven points. He was eight of
sixteen from the field. More importantly, five of eight from distance.
A few of those three pointers really gave the Celtics
some important momentum during this game to give themselves a

(08:28):
lead actually at one point, staying in the game at
some other moments. So great to see Peyton Pritchard, who
entered this game. I don't even know if I want
to say the numbers, but I will. Shooting forty three
point four percent from the field, twenty two point four
percent from long distance. This is a career forty percent
three point shooter. We're talking about. We all knew it

(08:51):
was going to come back, but seeing it finally tonight
was a great sight to see. Because the Celtics don't
have a ton of offensive firepower on this team, they
need guys like Peyton Pritchard to score at an efficient
and high rate. Tonight he did that, and it's no
wonder why the Boston Celtics had a chance to win

(09:13):
this game down the stretch. They just couldn't pull it off.
So anyway, great to see Peyton getting back into a rhythm,
particularly from long distance. Continues to score pretty efficiently from
inside the three point arc as well, and got to
the free throw line for eight attempts to lead the
team as well today. So again, great to see him

(09:33):
heading in the right direction. I expect more of the
same from him moving forward. All right, let's get into
a couple of fan comments. First up, we've got Mad
Luke m on Jordan Walsh and Josh might not in
their impact tonight, and then we've got JT zero, jbseven
dot eth on Boston's foul trouble during this game. So
let's dive into the first one here. As I said,

(09:56):
it's on you, Mad Luke. M all right, Mad Luke
m says, silly fowls and turnovers cost them the game.
I liked Walsh and miy not though. All right, let's
dive into the first one here. Turnovers. Ugh, it was
rough to see some of these. Also, the fouls we

(10:16):
already talked about the one from Cada during the final
four and a half minutes or so that really cost
them momentum in this game. But the Celtics also committed
fourteen turnovers during this game. Let's see how many of
those were down the stretch. They did dive during the
fourth quarter, which turned into nine of Orlando's thirty nine
points during that fourth quarter. So you gotta take care

(10:39):
of the ball. You can't commit those fouls. You can't
miss easy shots like Kada did at the rim. Listen,
it happens. This is a learning experience for these guys
that are just getting some of their first major playing
time of their careers, particularly for a guy like Cada.
But really the whole team, silly fouls, turnovers. That really

(11:01):
was what it came down to tonight in the Celtics
not being able to pull out this tight game. But
let's go into the second part of this comment. Mad
Luke m says I liked Walsh and mine not. I've
liked and we've liked my not All season long. He
continues to be an energizer bunny off the bench, also
shooting the ball unexpectedly well from long distance two for

(11:24):
four tonight, made both of his free throws. Has been
efficient at scoring the basketball for the Celtics this year,
also rebounding at a pretty high rate, playing some really
solid defense at times, actually more than at times, I
would say consistently, he's playing some pretty darn good defense.
But the other guy, Jordan Walsh, has gotten I believe

(11:45):
it's around forty to forty two minutes of playing time
over the course of the last two games. He's basically
not been in the rotation this season, and we're getting
to see him get some extended run now. And not
only are we getting to see him, but the reason
we're seeing him for longer periods of time is because

(12:06):
he's earning it. Like he's making an impact out there
on the court. He was a plus seven tonight in
about nineteen minutes of action. Nimias Cada and Ugo Gonzalez
are the only other Celtics to finish with positive plus
minus ratings. Cata was at plus seven and Ugo was

(12:30):
at plus nine, So Jordan Walsh, clearly while he was
on the court making a positive impact, finishes this game
with two points, a nice little driving scoop layup in
the paint, six rebounds, two of them at the offensive
end of the court. I believe at least one of
those led to a basket for the Celtics. Blocks, a shot, grabs,

(12:53):
a steal, like his activity was there, but the confidence
is there too. Like it. It feels like something is
click for him right now. And we've seen this a
little bit from him in the past. It's been spotty,
but right now, we've seen it in two consecutive games
where he has provided the Celtics with really good minutes.

(13:13):
And you know what really stood out to me during
this game was actually the strength that he displayed. He
wound up defending I think it was Paulo Bankearo a
couple of times. He got switched down to Wendell Carter
around the paint a couple like he was holding his
own against those guys who were trying to post him up.
And those guys are post up players. Jordan Walsh came

(13:33):
into this league a skinny dude, not much strength on
that body. So to see what he was able to
do during this game and really playing like a strong
basketball player, that surprised me and that opened my eyes
a little bit. So that was good to see on
top of the constant energy that he brings to the table.

(13:56):
So obviously he's been doing it really all season long,
particularly since he started he began to start for this
team again tonight. Twelve points, eight rebounds, what did he have?
One steal during this game? And assists so efficient impactful
basketball from him. Continues, But Jordan Walsh is the guy

(14:17):
who's starting to open some eyes and surprise some people
with what he's doing for the Boston Celtics right now.
All right, second and final comment of the night from
our fans, it's JT zero jbseven dot Eth who says
having Orlando in the bonus two minutes into the fourth
was impossible to overcome. Oh my gosh, when we saw

(14:41):
this happen, it was kind of like, how are the
Celtics gonna win this game? How could you possibly beat
a team with more size and tonight more shooting when
that team is in the bonus with basically ten minutes
left in the game. That was brutal, yet still somehow

(15:01):
the Celtics did have a chance during those final four
or five minutes to possibly win this game. They just
weren't able to pull it out. But overall, in this game,
I mean, you're facing off against a team that is bigger,
it's more athletic, it's probably more skilled. Across the table.
This Magic team is one of the bigger, stronger, most

(15:22):
athletic teams in the Eastern Conference. That's why they're expected
to possibly be a top three seed in the East
this season. And Orlando also ended this game with the
top free throw rate in the NBA and tonight that
held true twenty four for thirty one from the free
throw line that they made fifteen. They had fifteen more

(15:45):
attempts from the free throw line than the Celtics. They
made thirteen more free throws than the Boston Celtics. So
hard to win a game against a team that has
all those other advantages that I mentioned just a moment ago,
and also gets to win the free throw disparity by
that much. And during the fourth quarter they took a

(16:06):
ton of free throws. They were eleven to fourteen from
the free throw line. That's a plus eight from the
free throw line. Because the Celtics made three during the
fourth quarter. A plus eight from the free throw line
alone during the fourth quarter really was critical to them
being able to grab a win. Listen, these are all
lessons that the Celtics are gonna be able to take

(16:27):
into Saturday. Not sure if they're practicing down there in Orlando.
If they're just gonna watch over film. We'll have to
wait and see what we hear back. But these two
teams will be facing off again, and actually I'm seeing
it right now. They are just meeting and watching film.
Tomorrow the gym will be open for these guys to
be able to work out if they would like to,
but there's no official team practice, so they're gonna be

(16:50):
able to watch the film, learn from this, and these
two teams will face off yet again on Sunday. One
of these nice little fun mini series. It gives you
a preview of what it feels like to play in
the playoffs against another team. The Celtics will face off
against this very same Orlando Magic team Sunday night at
six o'clock down in Orlando. After that game, just like

(17:11):
every other game, make sure you send in your comments
to me after the final buzzer. I'm gonna pull a
couple into our next episode of sound Off, so I
will see you Sunday night, and until then, I hope
you enjoy your weekend. Everyone,
