Speaker 1 (00:06):
Sound off with me Folks on Jalen Brown going off
for forty one but the Celtics falling for the third
straight time to open up this twenty twenty five to
twenty sixth season. This was by far Jalen's top performance
of the season, and he's had a really strong season
so far. He has been remarkably efficient through the first
(00:28):
three games of the season, and tonight he made noise
at the free throw line to accentuate that efficiency that
he has been displaying throughout this year, twelve four to
fifteen from the free throw line in this game. To
give you a little bit of context on that, both
for the game and for Jalen's career, Jalen took fifteen
(00:50):
of Boston's twenty four free throws. He made twelve of
their eighteen makes from the free throw line, So almost
the entirety of what the Celtics did at the free
throw line came from the hands of Jalen Brown. So
that's with regard to the team. Now let's talk about
with regard to Jalen's actual entire career. The twelve makes
(01:12):
and the fifteen attempts both fall just one short of
his career high in those two categories. So to spell
it out, his career high was thirteen made free throws
and sixteen attempted free throws. Tonight he went twelve for fifteen,
so right on the border of career highs in both
(01:33):
of those categories. So just a great job by Jalen
of attacking and getting to the line throughout this game,
on top of shooting efficiently from the field. So let's
also talk about that twelve of twenty five from the field,
so basically just under fifty percent five of nine from
three point range. So what is that fifty five sixty percent?
(01:56):
Let's do a little math here, that's fifty six percent
from three point range, and then, as I said, twelve
of fifteen from the free throw line. So this just
continues what he's been doing all season long. In terms
of efficiency. He is now averaging about thirty points per game,
five point three rebounds per game, three point seven assists
(02:19):
per game. But here is the efficiency. Almost fifty percent
shooting from the field and actually fifty percent shooting from
long distance. And listen, we're only three games in, but
that is all NBA caliber stuff. Like when you look
at the totality of what he has done so far.
(02:39):
Those numbers are all NBA caliber. The only thing that
he can get better at is cleaning up the turnovers
and maybe making a few more plays for his teammates,
just to touch more in that category.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
But that's it.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
I mean, he has been awesome this season, with the
exception of the seven turnovers that he committed Friday night
in New York. You really couldn't ask for a whole
lot more from him so far during the season. Again,
we're only three games in. We can't just assume this
is going to continue for the whole season. But he
really has been really impressive offensively this season. Just got
(03:18):
to cut those turnovers down just a little bit. Another
couple guys that I want to talk about after this game,
Ugo Gonzalez and Josh may Not. These are two guys
who just bring the energy every time they're on the four.
First off, I want to talk about Ugo because tonight
was a major night for him in his life, in
(03:40):
his career, he got his first career start. Sam Houser
wound up coming off the bench. Ugo started and did
exactly what the Celtics wanted him to do by bringing
the energy, bringing a high level of defense, and that's
what he does.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
That's what he does every night that he steps down
to the court.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
The crazy thing I just got to point this out
before we get into his performance of the game and
especially defending against Kate Cunningham, is he's just the third
Celtic ever to start before turning twenty. Is that not
insane to all of you? Like, think about that, Think
about how long the Boston Celtics have been around, and
(04:25):
Ugo Gonzalez.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Is just the third.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
Player ever to be less than twenty years old and
start for this franchise. Another one you know very well,
Jason Tatum, the guy who a lot of people joke around,
is still nineteen years old, and the other one was
(04:49):
Al Jefferson. So just the third player ever to wear
green and white and start a game before turning twenty. So,
got to get that out of the way. That's a
pretty incredible stat. I never would have thought that, never
ever would have thought that, just with how many players
have come through, players getting drafted out of high school
back in the day, back in the nineties. But it's true,
(05:13):
it's true, he's just the third one ever. But getting
into what he brought to the table on the court.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
He was awesome during the first quarter.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
Man. I mean I think everyone including scal and Drew
Carter calling the game and everyone watching is just thinking, like, man,
this guy he it's not that he's going to wow
you with what he does. In the box score it
said he's gonna wow you with the way that he
impacts the game, Like he makes winning plays and he
(05:42):
doesn't take ill advised shots. He just stays within himself.
He just it looks like he belongs. I've been saying
this since the preseason. It just looks like he belongs.
He was great in the first quarter tonight, a perfect
carryover from Friday night in New York. He just he
understands the game and he gives it his all all
the time. Again, not the guy who's going to blow
(06:06):
you out of the water with his stat sheet, but
the kind of guy who can make winning plays over
and over and over. I've really enjoyed watching him play
so far, and really to discuss how far he's come
since the beginning of Summer League, Like, if you go
back to those games, is his understanding of the NBA
(06:28):
game has advanced so quickly that it's just making me
think about where he's going to be by the end
of the season. He's already advanced for nineteen years old
in terms of understanding the game, knowing where to be,
knowing how to use his body and his athleticism to
(06:48):
help both himself and the team. That stuff's only going
to improve with the more time that he spends on
the court. Maybe he gets more starts. He certainly made
a case for it tonight by playing well and statistically
he wound up finishing this game with that. He did
not score, but he did grab a couple of steals,
had a rebound during this game, a block shot, So
(07:12):
again not not huge numbers, but it's just like you
see it and you know that's a that's a that's
an NBA player, that's a guy that can impact games.
So another positive performance coming from him and the other
guy we want to talk about, Josh may Not. He's
very similar like he he just gives it his all
on the court. He's flying around, playing hard. He's got
(07:34):
a little bit more like bravado to him. I feel
like he kind of has some attitude. Sometimes he plays
with a little bit of a mean streak. I like
that for the Celtics Boston doesn't have a lot of
that on the roster, like that that mean streak that
can come out.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
So it's great to see that.
Speaker 1 (07:50):
But at one point during this game, kind of unexpected,
you know, you expect Josh May not to give energy
and to play hard and to impact the game with defense.
Will he actually scored ten straight Celtics points to get
them back in the game in the fourth quarter and
really give the Celtics a shot to win this game.
They didn't wind up pulling it off, but they got
back to I believe they got to within five points
(08:12):
during the final handful of minutes. They just weren't able
to get over the hump due to some things that
we're going to talk about later on. But really fun
to watch Josh Might not step into this increased role
that he has yet to have in his NBA career
again tonight ten points winds up grabbing three steals during
this game. Him and Ugo Gonzalez have played a huge
(08:35):
role in Boston being one of the top teams in
the league. I believe they're number two in steels plus
blocks so far this season. This defense is trying to
play more aggressively, trying to cause a little bit of
havoc for the other team, and Gonzalez and mi Not
are really at the forefront of that. So it's been
(08:57):
really fun to see those guys contribute in their first
season with the Celtics. In Again, it's early on, but
it's been fun to watch them and I'm interested to
see what winds up happening with their roles as the
rest of the season continues, and how they can improve
and grow in and of themselves for the rest of
the season. As for the result of this game, same
(09:19):
story as the first two. You know, the Celtics just
really struggle to protect the glass. Eighteen offensive rebounds for Detroit,
thirty second chance points. I believe the Celtics enter today's
game ranked twenty ninth out of thirty in defensive rebounding.
If you hear that in the background, that's my dog
coughing as he is chomping on a bone right down
at my feet, So I apologize for that. But yeah,
(09:41):
eighteen offensive rebounds tonight, thirty second chance points for the Pistons.
Just a continuation of Boston struggles so far this season.
It's hard to win games when that has taking place.
And listen, the Celtics are doing a pretty good job
for themselves on the offensive glass. Tonight they grabbed twelve
of their own led to nineteen second chance points. But
(10:02):
that differential thirty to nineteen of second chance points, that's
eleven points in the game. That's a huge factor in
a game that you lose by six points. So I
know that the Celtics coaching staff is going to do
everything they can to try to figure this out. It's
also on the players to figure it out themselves, and
we saw a little bit of that tonight from Peyton Pritchard.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
He led the team in rebounding with ten boards.
Speaker 1 (10:26):
Maybe it does wind up being a situation where, similar
to the last few seasons, it was on the big
men to box out, it was on the guards and
the wings to crash in and grab the rebounds. That's
what we saw from Peyton Pritchard tonight by grabbing a
team high ten rebounds. We'll see if that winds up
being the approach that the Celtics need to take this season.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
But it's definitely a work in progress.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
There's no ifs ands or butts about That doesn't mean
the Celtics can't get better in that category. They can
and I'm confident that they will. They've got too much
talent and too good of a coaching staff to not
figure out a way to navigate this inexperienced frontline and
really team in general that's allowing so many offensive rebounds
(11:13):
for the opponent.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
Got to clean that up.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
And if you clean that up, shoot you might be
three and oh at this point of the season. You
lose one game by one, you lose tonight by six. Obviously,
the game in New York Friday night wasn't all too close,
but a lot of that had to do with offensive
rebounding for the Knicks. So work in progress. Let's see
if the Celtics can clean that up moving forward. Definitely
a big thing to keep your eyes on. All right,
(11:35):
let's dive into a couple of comments from our fans.
First up, we're gonna have proud Gurbil lover on the
free throw disparity in this game. I did not comment
on that yet, and oh my god, it was significant.
And then next up our final comment of the night
coming in from Christian on Boston's top shooters and a
little bit of continuation of these rebounding issues. All right,
let's dive into the first one here, Proud Gurbil Lover,
(11:58):
you're up, all right, Proud Gurbil lover says, the free
throw disparity is insane. All right, let me give you
guys some context as to what proud Gerbil lover is
talking about here. Okay, Detroit went to the line for
thirty six free throws tonight, thirty six. The Celtics took
(12:21):
twenty four. Detroit made thirty two of them. And by
the way, props to the Detroit Pistons. You shoot about
ninety percent from the free throw line on bulk attempts
in a game. That is how you win a close game.
And this was a close game. Boston came back, made
it a game during the final five or ten minutes.
(12:42):
Boston had a chance to win this game. But when
you're taking thirty six free throws and you're making thirty
two of them, and you tack that onto the offensive
rebounding like, it is hard to beat a team when
they're able to put those together. As I said, the
Celtics eighteen of twenty four from the line. The Pistons
wind up thirty two for thirty six. A lot of
(13:04):
this had to do with just sheer size and effort
on the glass. The Pistons have a couple of guys
who are They are known for having athleticism and an
ability to rebound at a high rate around the basket.
Jalen duran Is he might he's one of the best
(13:26):
up and coming centers in the league, a great rebounder,
a big, strong body. He got to the line for
thirteen free throw attempts today, made twelve of them. Asar
Thompson one of the best athletes in the NBA. He's
listed as a guard. That kid could play forward. That
kid could probably play power forward if he needed to.
He's a big dude, long rangye. He grabbed twelve boards.
(13:50):
Then he got Isaiah Stewart. He's only six foot eight
six foot nine, but another big body that's known for
crashing the glass. He grabs six rebounds only twenty one minutes.
So it was those big guys that just dominated the
glass in this game for the Detroit Pistons. The Celtics
didn't have a single player other than Peyton Pritchard grab
(14:11):
more than six boards in this game. Nimia's Kaida, the
starting center, grabbed six. Jalen Brown grabbed six.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
No.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
One off the bench grab more than four, and by
the way, that four was from Sam Hauser, not a
big man. So yeah, I thought that the rebounding and
the sheer size advantage around the rim for the Pistons
is what led to all of these free throw attempts
(14:39):
for Detroit tonight, thirty two for thirty six, and a
lot of them were coming from those bigs. Asar Thompson
took eight, Jalen Duran took thirteen. That's twenty one of
the thirty six attempts for the Pistons today, and then
Isaiah Stewart added in two. So it was a huge
(15:01):
free throw disparity in my opinion. For the most part,
it was those bigs and the guys who are playing
around the basket quite a bit. Kate Hunningham got to
the line for seven free throws. That's actually a pretty
good night against him, Like he's pretty adept at getting
to the free throw line. Thought the Celtics did a
pretty solid job on him throughout this game, holding him
(15:22):
to only seven free throw attempts.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
That's pretty good.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
But those big, those big men in those long, rangy
guys like a sar Thompson that are around the rim
quite a bit, got to keep them off the line,
and the Celtics simply weren't able to keep up. Jalen
Brown was the only guy that got to the to
the free throw line with consistency.
Speaker 2 (15:42):
Tonight.
Speaker 1 (15:43):
Peyton Pritchard was second on the team with five free
throw attempts, that ten fewer than Jalen Brown. So I
do agree, hard to disagree with you here, Proud dribble Lover.
The free throw disparity was insane, but the Detroit Pistons
earned it, all right. Final comment of the night coming
(16:05):
in from Christian who says shooters need to make their
shots and rebounding needs to become an obsession for them.
All right, let's start off with the shooters comment, because
this has been maybe a little bit of an unexpected
scenario for the Boston Celtics coming into this season. Their
shooters aren't shooting all too well. I mean, we talked
(16:26):
about it at the start. Jalen Brown has been awesome,
but he's not necessarily known as an elite marksman in
this league. The guys who are Peyton Pritchard, Derek White,
Anthony Simons. Sam Hauser is the only one out of
this crew who is known by everyone as an elite
(16:48):
shooter who has been an elite shooter so far this season.
Tonight in this game, Derek White three for eleven from distance.
Peyton Pritchard, while he did score twenty one points to
for eight from distance Anthony Simon's two for seven from distance, Like,
those are three guys, as as Christian is saying in
(17:08):
this comment, the shooters need to make the shots, and
not all of them are going to be hot together
on the same night every single night.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
We know that's not gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
But tonight it was really like Jalen Brown was on fire,
and then outside of him, no one else really had
a cook and especially from distance. As I said, yes,
sam Houser went two for five, that's fine. You can't
say anything bad about what Sam Houser brought to the table.
Speaker 2 (17:40):
But when your other three elite shooters from distance combine
to shoot seven four twenty six from long range, it's
hard to overcome, especially for a team that doesn't have
a huge interior presence, like there's no Joel Embiide on
(18:01):
this team, there's no Nikola Jokic on this team. There's
a lot of perimeter skill on this team. And when
the perimeter skill is not leading to perimeter points. It's
just tough to make up for that.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
Now, I do have to say this, the track record
for Derek White, Peyton Pritchard, and Anthony Simons is very long.
Like these guys have been elite shooters for a long time.
Anthony Simon's one of the best catch and shoot three
point shooters and really one of the best shooters in
general from three point range in the NBA over the
(18:37):
past what six seven years of his career. Peyton Pritchard's
same thing since he came into the league. Derek White
obviously has emerged as a great shooter since he came
to the Celtics. But Water's gonna find its level. I
got no doubt about that. I said this about Peyton
Pritchard after Friday Night's game, Water's gonna find its level
(18:57):
for him. Well, tonight he winds up shooting fifty percent
from the not great from distance, but you can tell
that the rhythm is starting to come back, and I
expect that hopefully it continues the next time the Celtics
go out on the court. And by the way, that's
coming up very soon. Let's hope not only Peyton Pritchard,
but also Derek White and Anfrety Simons. Those guys can
(19:18):
catch fire from distance. As we move forward, the Celtics
are back on the court tomorrow. Okay, we only have
one night off before they're back on the court. Tomorrow
night is an It is an eight o'clock tip from
New Orleans. The Celtics are taken on Zion and the Pelicans.
Don't overlook the Pelicans. Okay, this is a good team,
good young team. They've got some good young talent and
(19:39):
Zion has looked awesome so far this season. So looking
forward to tomorrow's matchup again eight o'clock tip against the
Pelicans out in New Orleans. Let's hope the Celtics grab
their first point of the season. I'll see you tomorrow night, folks,
