Speaker 1 (00:06):
Sound off with me folks on the Celtics falling and
yet another one possession game and thanks to yet another
offensive rebound and put back by the opponent. This is
the third one possession loss of the season for the Celtics.
They've got seven losses, three of them are by one possession.

(00:28):
Two of those losses have come as a result of
an offensive rebound and put back by the other team
during the final seconds of the game. Let's set this
one up for you and tell you exactly what happened
during this game, even though you might not want to
hear about it. Jalen Brown tied the game up at

(00:50):
one hundred to one hundred with thirty three and a
half seconds left. He went to the free throw line
had a chance to give the Celtics the lead by
making both. He made one tie The game wound up
not really changing anything. The Celtics head back on defense
and Jordan Walsh was matched up on Tyrese Maxe in

(01:11):
yet again the third straight possession. Walsh plays excellent defense
against Tyrese Maxey, one of the quickest, most dynamic scorers
in the league. On this particular possession, Maxie couldn't even
get a shot off. However, he was able to find
one of his teammates on a kickout for an open

(01:31):
three point attempt, and that teammate just so happened to
be Justin Edwards. And if you haven't heard the name
Justin Edwards before tonight, you're certainly gonna know it moving forward,
because let me tell you, Justin Edwards looked like Steph
Curry in this game. Dude was eight for eight from

(01:54):
the field, five for five from three point range before
the shot on the kick out from Tyrese Maxey. Five
of those makes were during the fourth quarter. Three of
those three pointers were during the fourth quarter, so he
was on some type of heater and that is why

(02:15):
when Peyton Pritchard saw him catching the ball on the
perimeter on that pass from Tyrese Maxey, Pritchard did everything
he could to get out to contest the shot. Prichard
was down under the basket on a rotation and he
had to sprint out from the paint out to the

(02:36):
top of the art to do his best to contest
this three point shot from Edwards, who again had literally
not missed a shot in the game. So that contest
from Peyton Prichard might have helped to force the first
miss of the game for Edwards, but it came at

(02:57):
this expense. Prichard exiting the paint to go out and
contest Edwards's shot left Kelly Ubre Junior open under the basket,
and sure enough, as luck would have it, Edwards not
only missed the shot, but he missed it right into
the hands of Ubre for an uncontested put back layup

(03:21):
with eight point seven seconds left, so that makes it
a one o two to one hundred game. Celtics call timeout.
They still got a chance. Okay, call time out, draw
one up. Let's see what happens. Celtics had some good
action as this play started to come to fruition. They

(03:43):
get the ball into Jaylen Brown's hands extended far left
wing right like just off the sideline. Derek White is
the inbounder. He goes to set a slip screen, a
ghost screen, and he flares out toward the top of
the yark his defender and Jalen Brown's defender trap Jalen Brown.
Jalen makes a perfect read immediately passes it over to

(04:07):
Derek White, who looked like he was going to be
open again. He set a little bit of a ghost
screen flared out to the top of the arc. That's
where he catches the ball from Jalen Brown and as
the ball is in the air going over to Derek White,
if you hit pause, if you're rewatching this or you
see it online, hit pause, and you are going to

(04:29):
see the Celtics are in damn good position as this
ball is in the air. And Joe Mizoula talked about
it after the game like they had good action on
this play. But here's what happened next. Andre Drummond, fourteen
year veteran, looked like a veteran on this play. He's

(04:51):
a seven foot center, but he was smart enough to
rotate out to help on White, who was going to
be open if Drummond did not make this rotational play.
And Drummond, not exactly known for his on ball defense
against guards, poked the ball away from White as he
caught the ball from Jalen Brown. So the ball trickles away,

(05:16):
goes back toward kind of the sideline near mid court.
White has to sprint back just to get the ball
as the clock is running down, fires up a shot
with about two and a half seconds left. Two seconds left,
and this is when things get even more interesting, White's heave,
which that's what it was. It was like a desperation

(05:38):
shot because the clock was running out. He had nothing
else really to do. It was nowhere near going in,
like gonna be an airball, no chance of going in.
Nimiash Kida is under the basket, essentially unguarded, rises up
and has a perfect chance to just grab the ball

(06:01):
and dunk it home for the win. At the buzzer,
it would have been beautiful. It would have been beautiful.
And excuse me, it would not have been for the win.
It would have been to force overtime. I apologize, but
that doesn't take away from the beauty that this play.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Could have had.

Speaker 1 (06:19):
So Kada rises up, grabs, he touches the ball with
both hands with like point five point six seconds left.
I don't think he knew how much time he had.
I also think he might have been a little bit concerned. Again,
maybe a little bit of inexperienced here, but I think
he might have misread the shot. He might have been

(06:41):
a little bit concerned about offensive interference. So instead of
trying to just grab the ball and come down for
an easy it's essentially an alley oop. Dunk uncontested. He
tried to tip it in instead and it missed everything.
And that's your game. That's what it all came down to.

(07:05):
Peyton Pritchard rotates out, forces the first miss of the
night from Justin Edwards.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
Kelly you Bray Jr.

Speaker 1 (07:15):
Is open for the put back layup because of the
Peyton Pritchard rotation puts it home. And then on the
Celtics inbound play out of the timeout, Jalen Brown makes
the great read, gets it over to Derek White. You
gotta give credit where credit is due. Andre Drummond made
a play. Not only did he make a beautiful rotation

(07:38):
out to Derek White, but more importantly, he poked the
ball away because if he didn't, Derek White had a
great chance of feeding it straight down to Numish Kida
for a dunk immediately. And then as we just detailed
Cada just I mean, it's a tough position, like he's

(08:00):
been in these situations before with the Celtics, really where
it's the final, final possession and he's got a chance
to win the game. But I think things sped up
a little bit on him and he just didn't get
a good read on it. He didn't get a good
read on the timing. He definitely had more time than
I think he thought he had. And then number two,
I think again he might have been a little concerned
with committing offensive interference by touching the ball, and that

(08:23):
may have been why he didn't just grab it and
dunk it home. So that's how it all came to
an end. A brutal loss for the Celtics on a
night when otherwise they played pretty damn well. And yes,
they did not shoot the ball well. We're gonna talk
about that in just a moment. Did not shoot the
ball well, but they played pretty strong basketball overall. And

(08:43):
that's how you got to look at it. Okay, if
they they miss shots, it is what it is. Maybe
on some nights they don't have the talent to make them.
Maybe they just haven't caught their rhythm offensively, we don't know,
still early in the season. But if they play good basketball,
taking care of the ball, which they did only eleven
turnovers during this game generally speaking, protecting the glass which

(09:05):
they did plus nine in the rebounding department, passed the
ball well, played as a team, played with excellent effort
top to bottom. They played well They played good, strong basketball,
they just didn't make shots. So we keep talking about it.
The Celtics are going to play a lot of these
types of games this season. We've already seen it, right,

(09:27):
they're five and seven, that's twelve games. They've already played
three of them. That's my quick math is twenty five
percent of their games have come down to the final possession,
a one possession loss. So they got to figure out
a way to win these games, that's the bottom line.

(09:49):
And this is a team that's learning each other. This
is a team with a lot of players who are
stepping up in role and opportunity this season, and this
is a part of the prom You've got to learn
how to win these games, and they just simply have
not been able to do it so far this season.
And by the way, it's actually one more they had

(10:10):
won more one possession game and they actually won that one.
That was the win against Philadelphia, their first game down
in Philadelphia. I believe that was on Halloween nights. So
a lot of close games they've won one of them,
and they've got to figure out how to win more.
A few numbers that we should detail from this game tonight,

(10:34):
just for all of you who may not have caught
the whole thing, or in case you didn't get to
look at a box score, So something's only shot thirty
nine percent from the field.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
As a team, I just talked about it. They played
good basketball, they just did not shoot the ball well. Really,
no one did.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
And when we're talking about shooting, I'm not even going
to count to me a Shcada because most of his
baskets and touches are right around the rim. But outside
of him, really no one shot the ball well. Ougogans
made one of his three pointers two of two from
the field. But other than that, I mean Simons five
for fifteen, Derek White seven for twenty, Peyton Pritchard two

(11:09):
for nine, Jalen Brown decent night eight for eighteen from
the field, you know, mid forties and percentage wise certainly
not up to the standard that he has set so
far this season. So the Celtics just continue to not
be able to produce efficient offense. That's certainly one of
the biggest concerns here early in this season. We got
to wait to see if they can turn a corner

(11:29):
here moving forward. Who knows if they're able to. We're
gonna find out long term. That being said, Derek White
did get hot during the second half, and this was
important because we haven't seen him really get into this
type of rhythm yet this season. He wound up with
four made three pointers that ties this season high, eighteen
points seven assists during the game. Those seven assists did

(11:52):
lead the Celtics, and during the second half he scored
sixteen points, six of twelve, shooting four six from distance.
So essentially all of his work and by the way,
four of his seven assists were in the second half
as well, essentially all of his offensive output came during
the second half. So that was great to see him
start to turn a corner. We've seen like little it's

(12:14):
pieces and little tiny colonels laying around of seeing him
start to turn a corner, well, this is what, by
far the biggest wave that we've seen from him, and
hopefully this means that he's going to get this type
of rhythm here moving forward for the rest of the
season because the Celtics need Derek White to be an
efficient offensive player and in particularly scoring the basketball. Another

(12:38):
guy that we want to highlight, Anthony Simons, comes off
the bench score seventeen points for the Celtics. Ten of
those points were during the fourth quarter. He also had
five assists during that fourth quarter. I think that this
team is still really learning how to best utilize him,
especially in close games, like when do you leave him
out there?

Speaker 2 (12:55):
When do you maybe take him out?

Speaker 1 (12:57):
Maybe tonight it was like Joe Missoula was doing offense
for defense because you got to make sure that Anthony
Simons is not a big defensive body. I think Joe
Miszula was trying to prioritize that down the stretch, which
actually paid off, by the way, because Jordan Walsh, we're
going to talk about this, but he was unbelievable defensively

(13:18):
down the stretch against Tyrese Maxi. But still trying to
figure this out. I think exactly what that role is
going to be for Anthony Simons. We've seen him really
start to catch a rhythm offensively and catch his confidence
within this system. We're going to see how this really
continues to be molded here as the rest of the
season carries on. Let's go into a couple of comments

(13:39):
from our fans. First up, we've got Alejandro Proskauer, hopefully
I'm saying that properly, who says one Celtics trend is
eating at his soul. Got to stick around to hear
what that is. And then Aussie Wild celt talks about
Jordan Walsh's defense on Tyrese Maxie. So let's get into it.
Here's our first comment of the night from Alejandro pro

(14:02):
Sikkaur okay as promised, Alejandro pro Sikhaur pro sacor, I
hope one of those is correct here, but he says
that to this game that his takeaway is lack of
rebounding is eating at my soul Mark and I get it.
I get it, Alejandro, But let's look at the full numbers.

(14:25):
I think we can concentrate on that final play. I
understand it's the second time this has happened this season
where an offensive rebound has been put back for a
win for the other team.

Speaker 2 (14:36):
The other one came against Utah.

Speaker 1 (14:39):
Yusuf Nurkic grabs an offensive rebound, drops in a jump
hook to win the game. And then tonight we see
Kelly Oubray Junior grab an offensive rebound and put one
back in off the glass uncontested on Philly's final possession
of the night.

Speaker 2 (14:56):
Listen, I get it.

Speaker 1 (14:58):
This one felt a little bit situation, the Celtics didn't
complete their rotation. You know, Jalen Brown might have been
able to box out Kelly Ubrew, but I don't even know.
It looked to me like Kelly Eubra had the position regardless,
I don't think Jalen Brown was really going to be
able to change that much at all. Could Jalen have
jumped up to try to tip it away or something, Yeah,

(15:20):
But generally speaking, I think once Peyton Pritchard committed to
sprinting out to contest that three pointer from the red
hot Justin Edwards, it set this situation up. It was
either going to go in off the hands of Justin Edwards,
or it was going to miss off the rim to
the right or straight away, which the Celtics would have
had a great chance of grabbing that rebound. Or the

(15:42):
smallest percentage is miss and miss left right into the
hands of the one player who was in position for
the Sixers to grab the rebound. So I get it
that the concentration is on that final rebound, But in
this game, Celtics were pretty darn good on the glass
fifty three to forty four overall, thirteen to eight edge
in offensive rebounding forty to thirty six edge in defensive rebounding.

(16:08):
The Celtics scored twelve second chance points the Sixers only
scored eight. That includes that deuce that was put home
by Ubre Junior on Philly's final possession of the game.
So I actually thought the Celtics were pretty solid in
the rebounding department during this game.

Speaker 2 (16:25):
The Miashketa was really good.

Speaker 1 (16:27):
Had double digit rebounds, ten of them on the night,
four of them at the offensive end. Luca Garza had
four offensive rebounds eight total, Sam Houser seven rebounds. I
thought that this was a really strong rebounding game. It
was just that one possession where it got away from
the Celtics. And listen, like I said, I think Uber
was just in position. I don't really think there was

(16:49):
a whole lot that Celtics could have done. But they've
got to figure that out at the end of games.
They got to figure out a way to complete defensive possessions.
They got the stop, which we're gonna talk about in
the next segment. They got the stop. They have to
figure out a way to finish that possession, and if

(17:11):
they do, the percentage chance of them winning the game
skyrockets from that moment forward. So that is a critical
thing that this team needs to learn. Finish possessions, especially
when the game is on the line. All right, Second
and final comment of the night. This is coming in
from Aussie wild celt who says, Jordan Walsh on Maxie

(17:35):
stood out for me and listen, anyone who watches the
Celtics closely, maybe even anyone who doesn't like Mike Turko
by the way, saw Jordan Walsh, and Jordan Walsh stood
out to him and stood out to everyone in particular
down the stretch. Jordan Walsh, as I said, was out there.

Speaker 2 (17:55):
For defense.

Speaker 1 (17:58):
Three straight possession with the game on the line, facing
off against arguably the quickest player in the NBA.

Speaker 2 (18:08):
In Tyrese Maxi.

Speaker 1 (18:10):
It's arguable maybe it's Shay I don't know, but maybe
the quickest, definitely an All Star player. He's was in
the MVP conversation for a little bit of the sea.
I know it's early, but that's how well this guy's
been playing. Jordan Walsh played perfect defense on him three

(18:30):
straight possessions. First forced two misses with great defense, and
then he prevented Maxy from getting that shot off on
the final offensive possession for Philly and forced the kickout.
Now did it work out for the Celtics. No, But
Jordan Walsh did his job.

Speaker 2 (18:51):
And it just seemed like, I mean, this looked to me.

Speaker 1 (18:56):
Like Avery Bradley back in the day, or like Allen
Way back in the day. Like players who are so
talented defensively with their instincts, with their length, with their
ability to read things in a split second and be
able to stay in position defensively. That's what was standing

(19:19):
out to me. Like Jordan Walsh looked like a superstar
defender during that final minute two minutes of the game
when he was playing this defense against Tyres Maasy. And
again I talked about Mike Tarico, like Tarrico was calling
out Jordan Walsh all night long because of how great.

Speaker 2 (19:41):
He was playing.

Speaker 1 (19:43):
That's why Jordan wallh started the second half because he
played so well, finished the game playing almost thirty minutes,
eight points, seven rebounds, two steals, two blocks.

Speaker 2 (19:57):
He was awesome.

Speaker 1 (20:00):
But that defense down the stretch was like on another
level because there are not many players, especially players are
how tall is Jordan Walsh.

Speaker 2 (20:09):
Let's look this up.

Speaker 1 (20:10):
I don't want to misquote this, I'd say sixty seven
ish sixty six. He's listed a six to six, wildly rangy.
His wingspan has got to be around seven feet. For
a player of that size to be able to stay
in front of Tyrese Maxi and just make life difficult

(20:31):
on him is really saying a lot. And this wasn't
just one possession. This was three straight possessions with the
game on the line. It's like very notable stuff that
we're talking about here. Jordan Walsh is inserting himself into
the conversation as maybe one of the most important rotational

(20:52):
players on Boston's team. That's how well he's playing. We
saw it down in Orlando, earned his minutes, played the
entire fourth quarter, then hits the game ceiling three pointer,
and then tonight played so well again that he's the
guy Joe Mazula tab to start the second half in
place of Josh Mayno. So great to see this, I

(21:13):
said it after the last game in Orlando on our
episode of Sound Off. I'm so proud of this guy
to see what he is developing into. It looks like
something has clicked, and not only has it clicked, but
the confidence is coming along for the ride. So I
can't wait to continue to see what Jordan Walsh brings
to the table here moving forward, and we don't have

(21:35):
to wait long to see it because the Celtics are
getting on a plane right now to head back to
Boston and host the Memphis Grizzlies tomorrow night. Both of
these teams will be playing on the second night of
a back to back. Tip Off is at seven point thirty.
Game is on NBC Sports Boston, and we can't wait
to see you there, so make sure after the final

(21:55):
buzzer you head over to x send in your comments
to me on what your takeaways are for that game,
and I'll work a couple into our episode of sound Off.
You can catch that both on all your podcast platforms
and on YouTube. Home games are on YouTube and podcast platforms.
Away games our podcast only. So can't wait to see
you tomorrow night when the Celtics play host to the

(22:15):
Memphis Grizzlies. Hopefully they can get back in the win column.
Thanks for listening to everyone, See you tomorrow.
