Speaker 1 (00:06):
Sound off with me Folks on Luca Garza setting the
Celtics up for the win and Jordan Walsh sealing it.
Let's get into how the Celtics won this game to
head out of Orlando with a two game split over
the weekend. The fivesome of Peyton Pritcher, Derek White, Jordan Walsh,
Hugo Gonzalez and Luca Garza were awesome during the fourth
(00:31):
quarter for the Boston Celtics. Luca Garza at one point
scored six straight points and he toldaled eight points and
five rebounds during the fourth quarter alone. This guy was awesome.
We saw some real raw emotion out of him after
some huge plays that he had some and won some
putback buckets. You'll love to see that edge coming out
(00:55):
of him and him playing with that fire underneath him
and certainly his he made fed off of that. He
was the reason why the Celtics built an eleven point
lead halfway through the fourth quarter. It was him effort, rebounding, physicality,
finishing around the rim, being in all the right places
(01:17):
at all the right times. Everything you would want to
see out of Luca Garza, he did it during that
fourth quarter. So he sets the Celtics up well again,
pushes them ahead by eleven with his play, and then,
as you might expect, the Magic made the run. Okay,
(01:38):
they made a run. They battled back. Bankaro and Wagner
were incredible down the stretch. At one point they scored
eighteen straight points for the Magic to get Orlando back
to within one with exactly one minute to go, And
from that moment on, it was either the Celtics weren't
(02:00):
gonna make the plays and they were gonna give this
game away, or they were gonna make the plays and
they were going to take home this monumental win that
certainly has them feeling good heading out of Central Florida.
They had to make these plays, and they did it
with perfect team basketball. Perfect team basketball is what led
(02:22):
to a clutch three pointer from Derek White from the
left wing to take it from a one point game
to a four point game, and then after Orlando scored
one more basket to slice it back down to two,
it was then time for the biggest shot of the
night from the most surprising of sources. Again, Celtics up
(02:45):
by two final thirty seconds. You need a bucket to
seal the game. They work it around Peyton Pritchard takes
it off the dribble inside the art, basically gets to
the right elbow, kicks it out to who in the
right corner, Jordan Walsh. And Jordan Walsh touched nothing but
the bottom of the net to seal the game with
(03:07):
thirteen seconds left. There is no question that this was
the biggest shot of Jordan Walsh's young career. And when
I say nothing about the bottom of the net, I
mean this thing was splashing like we were at a
pool party, in absolute, no doubt or seals the game.
And that leads us to discussion of Jordan Walsh. During
(03:30):
this game, this guy played the entire fourth quarter. You
want to know who else played the entire fourth quarter,
No one on the Celtics. Only Jordan Walsh. Think about that.
Only Jordan Walsh played the entire fourth quarter. Not Derek White,
not Peyton Pritchard, no one else, Not Jaylen Brown, Jordan Walsh.
(03:57):
Joe Missoula could not take him off the court. That's
how good he was, making all the right plays, providing
the Celtics with high level defense. He made both of
his shots, each of them from beyond the ark, two assists,
a steal, The best thing a player can do when
(04:19):
he's fighting for a role on a team is to
make it impossible for the player to take the coach
to take him out of the game. Tonight, Jordan Walsh
made the decision for Joe Missoula, and that decision to
leave Walsh in one Boston the game. And this leads
(04:43):
me to something that I have thought about throughout my
time covering the NBA about eighteen years. I always say
that outside of raw talent and ability, confidence is the
most important thing in sports. There are so many opportunities
(05:06):
that we never know, just missed opportunities for players because
they never had the confidence, because the coaches never instilled
it in them. What could they have become if the
coaches just happened to bring that confidence, build that confidence,
and bring it out of that player. We're starting to
see that with Jordan Walsh. The confidence is building, the
(05:28):
confidence is being brought out, and tonight, when Joe Missoula
left him in the game for the entire fourth career,
this is a tight game. The Celtics need this win,
and Joe Missoula said to Jordan Walsh, I have to
have you out on the court. I cannot take you
out of the game. What do you think that does
(05:50):
for a young player, especially one who's fighting for a
role on this team and in general, possibly for his
career in the this is third season, like he's got
to start to make an impact. So when you're put
yourself in Jordan Walsh's shoes and you think about Joe
(06:11):
Mazoula looking at him and saying you, I need you
on the court for this entire fourth quarter for us
to win this game, what do you think that does
for Jordan confidence building and building? He believes in me,
My teammates believe in me, and they should. The way
that he's been playing of late. I think I said
(06:33):
this Friday night after the last episode, It's like a
switch has gone off with Jordan Wallh. She just looks
like everything is making sense, everything is clicking in his brain.
And all that confidence building and building and building leads
to that moment in the right corner with the game
(06:55):
on the line. And if you head into tonight's game
and you take a pull of all Celtics fans, you
put the whole list of the Celtics roster, who would
you want to take the final shot to seal the game?
Tonight from the right corner, game sealing three. Who would
(07:16):
you want? I bet you Jordan Walsh is pretty far
down the list, but it didn't matter. It didn't matter
what the past may have represented and made people think. Tonight,
Jordan Walsh's confidence was soaring, and so he catches that
pass from Peyton Pritchard and without hesitation, fires it up
(07:41):
and drops it through the net without grazing the rim,
seals the game for the Boston Celtics. Confidence, folks, is
the most important thing in sports outside of raw talent
and ability. Jordan Walsh's confidence is booming right now and
(08:08):
he is the reason why the Boston Celtics won this game.
And boy is it awesome to be able to say that.
So happy for that guy. So that's how this game ended.
Let's rewind out how it started. Okay, because the Celtics
(08:30):
they weren't doing very well out of the gates. The
offense was sputtering, They couldn't really find any rhythm offensively.
They fell behind by twelve points early on during the
during the first quarter. Let's not forget about the guy
who saved the day in the first half, and that
is Anthony Simon's inferno if you will, We got our
first look at the real inferno tonight. He became the
(08:54):
highest He put forth the highest scoring first half of
any Celtic reserve since nineteen ninety seven. That's twenty eight
years ago, folks. Twenty five points tonight he had in
the first half. He was halfway to a fifty piece
when these teams went to the locker room for the
halftime break. It was insane. He turned this game around
(09:16):
all by himself for Boston. He was a plus twenty
one in eight and a half minutes, seven for nine
from the field, five for six from three point range. Again,
the Celtics had been down by twelve, then they went
up by eleven. It was all because of him. It
was all because of Simons. He is the one who
(09:36):
turned the page. He's the one who flipped the script.
He's the one who gave the Celtics every bit of
energy that they had for the rest of the night.
It all started with him. So while the flowers are
gonna go to Luca Garza in Jordan Walsh for what
(09:57):
they did during the fourth quarter, let's give the flowers
to the man who changed the game during the first
quarter and gave the Celtics a chance to win this
game in the first place. That is Anthony Simons. He
was a microwave coming off the bench tonight, Cook gang,
and he showed us all I thought. Drew Carter made
(10:18):
a great point on the broadcast. He showed us all
why Brad Stevens wanted him to come over in the
trade with you. Howiday Simons is the guy Brad Stevens
wanted and tonight was the perfect example of why. All right,
(10:38):
let's get into some fan comments. We've got two of
them tonight. The first up is from Monkey versus Unicorn
on the overall play from the bench, which, as we've
talked about already two guys that we singled out, was awesome.
And second, we've got Stephanie on her takeaway from the
offense during tonight's game. So let's dive in first one here,
Monkey versus Unicorn up, all right, First up is Monkey
(11:04):
versus Unicorn, who says the bench, we're all six or
above in plus minus and folks, I can't confirm that
and will confirm that right now. Sam Hauser a plus
six in seventeen plus minutes. Anthony Simon's a plus nine
in almost twenty three minutes. Luca Garza plus nine in
(11:26):
seventeen minutes, Jordan Walsh a plus thirteen in twenty five
and a half minutes in Ugo Gonzalez plus nineteen in
twelve and a half minutes, plus nineteen in twelve and
a half minutes. These guys were awesome tonight. Anthony Simon's
(11:47):
twenty five points off the bench was cooking during that
first half. Luca Garza sixteen points in eight rebounds off
the bench all so adds in three assists, a steal,
sixteen points and eight rebounds and three assists in seventeen minutes.
(12:10):
Think about that, incredible Ugo Gonzalez plus nineteen in twelve
and a half minutes. This kid just continues to impact
the game anytime he checks in. And by the way,
he did have a three pointer in the fourth quarter
as well. Him and Jordan Walsh each made three pointers
early on in the fourth quarter to give the Celtics
(12:31):
a nice push at the start of that quarter, gave
them a bunch of momentum before Luca Garza kind of
took over. Then, obviously, Jordan Walsh steals the game with
his three pointer. But man, how can you not talk
about this group of bench players after this game. I'm
so happy Monkey versus Unicorn brought this up that the bench,
(12:51):
all of them, every single bench player, was a plus
six or better during this game. Now, let's flip it
over to the magic side. Every single player who played
at least eleven seconds in this game a negative in
the plus minus category. So oh and by the way,
(13:14):
a starter for the Magic was in the negative. So
if you look at these five bench players for the Celtics,
they impacted the game no matter who was on the court,
and by the way, no matter who they were on
the court. With a very important development here for the
(13:35):
Celtics as they look to continue to build momentum and
hopefully get back to the five hundred mark and hopefully
advance past that. But building the confidence and continuity of
this bench group is so important and they are the
reason why the Celtics won this game tonight, all right,
(13:58):
second and final the night coming in from Stephanie, whose
reaction to the win was the way everyone stepped up
and the way they moved the ball felt like vintage
Missoula ball. All right, let's dive into the numbers, because
the numbers don't totally agree. Okay, the Celtics only had
twenty two assists during this game. They only attempted thirty
(14:19):
three to three pointers. They did make thirteen of them,
so that's about forty percent. But twenty two assists and
thirty three threes doesn't necessarily scream out Missoula ball. Missoula ball.
You're thinking upper twenties around thirty assists, you're thinking forty
five to fifty five three pointers. That stuff didn't happen tonight. However,
(14:43):
during the fourth quarter, which is obviously when the game
was decided, that is when Missoula ball showed up. The
ball was whipping around. You talk about the two most
important buckets of the game. Number one was a three
pointer that I talked about from the left wing by
Derek White that came off of perfect ball movement from
the Boston Celtics. Okay, it started out with Jalen Brown
(15:08):
who had the ball in his hands. The play started
out with Jalen Brown with the ball in his hands.
He dribbles away from a bunch of traffic. He got
double team, kicks it over to Walsh, and then Walsh
touch pass over to Derek White on the left wing.
So perfect job from Jalen Brown on that play, okay,
to accept the double team, to reject away from it,
(15:29):
and then be able to find the open teammate, which
was Jordan Walsh, and then a perfect job by Jordan
Walsh to then skip it around with one more pass
to Derek White for the bucket. That's the first play
down the stretch. That was absolutely perfect execution offensively in
perfect Missoula ball, which is always finding the two on
(15:51):
one and executing on it, okay. And then it comes
to the final big shot of the game, and this
is the one from Jordan Walsh. This one also was
initiated by Jaln Brown. Okay. He drives to the basket,
draws a ton of attention in the paint because he
had been scoring in the paint at a pretty high
rate all weekend really against this magic team. He kicks
(16:14):
out to Peyton Pritchard on the right wing. He's got
a chance to take a three pointer. He could have
fired that up, but instead he sees that Franz Wagner
is closing out uncontrolled to contest that three pointer, so
he does a pump fake takes it off the dribble.
One dribble to the right elbow and then Jordan Walsh. Okay,
this is the best part of this play. Jordan Walsh
(16:38):
is basically under the basket when Peyton Pritchard catches this basketball,
and then he spaces out to the corner. This is smart,
intelligent basketball right here, he spaces out to the corner,
Peyton Pritchard finds him for the wide open three pointer.
Wide open. No one is even outside of the paint
(17:02):
when Jordan Walsh catches this ball like he's got ten
to fifteen feet of free space here to get the
shot off. This is a practice shot and he drills it.
This is perfect, perfect execution. This is perfect team basketball.
And that is what the Celtics played during the fourth quarter. Again,
(17:24):
nine assists on thirteen made baskets. They shot sixty eight
percent from the field, sixty three percent from three point range.
This was all about team basketball. You love to see it.
And now Boston has a nice little wave of momentum
(17:45):
as they head out of Orlando into their next destination.
That next destination is Philadelphia. We have seen a lot
of the Philadelphia seventy six ers this year, and we're
gonna see them again Tuesday night. Boston visits Philadelphi for
the second and final time this regular season Tuesday night.
That game tips off at eight o'clock. Joel embiid it
(18:07):
sounds like will be on the court for that game.
So the Celtics are gonna see if they can take
their second win away from the Philadelphia seventy six ers
this season, both of them being on the road. That
game is on the first night of a back to back,
and then the Celtics head home after they wrap up
their three game trip, and they host the Memphis Grizzlies
the very next night on the second night of a
back to back, as they come home for a very
(18:29):
brief two game homestand so again, the next game is
Tuesday night. Let's hope that this momentum carries through. Make
sure you check in with my post on Twitter right
after that game. Send in your comments and I'm gonna
take a couple of them for the next episode of
sound Off. Thank you for giving us a listen, and
I'll see it Tuesday night.
