Speaker 1 (00:06):
Sound off with me folks on an instant classic at
TD Garden between the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks
in Game one of the Eastern Conference semi Finals. New
York walks into TED Garden and steals home court advantage
right from the get go in this series. They take
Game one in overtime in front of a raucous crowd

(00:27):
that did have a pretty decent amount of New York
Knicks fans in the building. You're going to see that
both in New York and here in Boston. These teams
are so close together three to four hour drive, a
very short flight, you are going to see a lot
of each team's fans in the opposing arena. And that
did happen tonight for the New York Knicks. There were

(00:47):
loud cheers when they pulled off this win. But let's
dive in to how this happened. This was a tight game,
not only at the end of regulation, but also at
the end of overtime. To get this game to overtime,
the Austin Celtics needed to score during the final minute.
They got it from Drew Holliday on a cutting layup
to force overtime, and then The Celtics got the stops

(01:08):
they needed down the stretch. That included Jalen Brunson missing
what I would consider for him as one of the
best players in most clutch players. He was the clutch
player of the Year in the NBA A Bunny. He
missed it off the glass with his left hand. Al
Horford rose up to contest the shot just enough to

(01:28):
force that miss and in turn force overtime. And in overtime,
this game stayed tight, went down to the final seconds
yet again, the Celtics fell behind by six all of
a sudden. They slashed that deficit in half with a
three pointer from Jalen Brown. And then came the final
thirty seconds and they were chaotic.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
The Celtics get the miss.

Speaker 1 (01:49):
They forced the miss out of New York, who was
up by three with about twenty something seconds left. They
missed the shot. Boston grabs the rebound again. Down by
three with seventeen seconds left, Joe Missoula chooses not to
call time out. I'm sitting there in my immedia seat
and I'm thinking, go get up the court, try to

(02:09):
get a quick two, try to get an easy bucket.
It did not happen. The Celtics didn't really push the ball.
They stopped outside the three point line. They kept passing
the ball outside the three point line, and then Jalen
Brown was fouled on the ground with about five seconds left,
and at that point the Celtics were set to call
time out. Three seconds left, the Celtics inbound the ball

(02:31):
with a chance to tie the game on a three pointer.
They do not get a shot off. That is the
thing that's going to sting them as they look back
at Game one. And obviously there are some other things
that we're going to talk about that occurred in this
game that they're gonna learn from and be able to
grow from and be much better in in Game two,
but that those final possessions when you get the rebound

(02:53):
with seventeen seconds left and you don't even get a
shot off. Jalen Brown caught an inbound passer's kind of
a flare across the court from Derek White, who was
the inbounder on the right side of the court, tosses
it a little flare pass over to the left wing
of the court. Jalen Brown catches it. Mckel bridges to
his defense into his credit steps into Jalen zone, grabs

(03:16):
the ball, steals it away, and there we have it.
New York gets out of Game one with the win,
preserving the three point victory without allowing and preventing the
Celtics from even taking a shot to tie the game.
Pretty impressive stuff from the New York Knicks. Meanwhile, on
the other side of the ball, the Boston Celtics have

(03:37):
a lot to learn from.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
It felt like they settled throughout this game.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
And I'll say that I think a lot of the fans,
a lot of the people watching the game felt that way.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
It just felt like the Celtics settled in this game.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
They wind up taking a whopping sixty three pointers and
they missed forty five of them. That is an NBA
record for the most three point misses in a single
playoff game. That's what you saw out of the Boston
Celtics tonight. Now, that doesn't happen very often for this team,
as we all know, but it felt to me like

(04:11):
the way they were getting those three pointers was not
necessarily their style and their brand of basketball. We saw
them play a different type of brand of basketball during
the first round because the defense called for it. With
New York against Orlando, the Boston Celtics had to go
for twos. They had to play isolation basketball, and they've
got a couple of the best isolation basketball players in

(04:33):
the world, and that's how they advanced. But tonight it
felt like they just totally got away from the rhythm
and the ball movement and the body movement at the
pace that they usually play with. At the offensive end.
It just didn't seem like they were moving the ball,
didn't seem like they were cutting off the ball, not
much pace, not much body movement, and it resulted in

(04:55):
a bunch of step back threes, isolation.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
Threes, some one pass threes.

Speaker 1 (05:01):
That is atypical of what we've seen from the Celtics
team all season long. This team moves the ball, this
team moves bodies, It tries to get you in multiple rotations,
and then takes the rhythm three on a drive and
kick or a swing swing, whatever it is. Tonight, it
was like one swing, or it was a one dribble pass,

(05:23):
or it was a step back three. It just didn't
feel like the rhythm was there for the Celtics because
they weren't playing their brand and their style of basketball.
And as I said, that led to them missing forty
five to three pointers. That is an NBA record for
a playoff game. Not a record that you want to hold,
but it is one that the Celtics now hold and

(05:43):
it's their turn to try to bounce back from that
heading into Game two. And in this game in general,
it was a putriod offensive performance from them. We just
don't see this from the Boston Celtics. And listen, you
gotta give credit to New York. I said it on
Celtics Weekly last week. This team was built defensively to
try to compete with Boston. Og Anobi that trade huge

(06:06):
for them. A big, long, strong wing who can defend
at a very high level. Macal Bridges one of the
better defenders in the league. On the wing, big and
long and athletic. You got Josh Hart, who is a
pest who can get in anyone's skin. And then you've
got Mitchell Robinson playing on the background trying to block
shots and defend the room. This is a very good

(06:26):
defensive team. This team is capable, but the Celtics lit
this team up throughout the regular season, and they did
it by playing their brand of basketball. And again, I'm
gonna repeat it one last time. They did not do
that tonight during the second half. As I said, a
putrid offensive performance, twenty nine percent from the field, twenty
nine percent from the field during the second half, scored

(06:49):
only thirty nine points in quarters three and four. They
have a bunch of quarters this season, individual quarters where
they scored more than thirty nine points. So they shoot
during the second half. They shoot twenty six percent from
three point range. It just was not their night. We've
seen them play much better than this, basically ninety five

(07:10):
percent of the time throughout the regular season. That's why
I got to think that they're going to be able
to battle back and turn the ship back around and
play much better defense and offense, and offense in particular
during Game two. A couple of players that I want
to highlight are Drew Holliday and El Horford. Listen, the
numbers are not going to stand out, but the impact
we're certainly there. Drew Holliday almost single handedly got the

(07:34):
Celtics to overtime by hounding Jalen Brunson out around the
three point line and making life.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
So difficult for him.

Speaker 1 (07:42):
Obviously, Brunson did get that shot off at the end
of regulation. He missed it thanks to Horford coming over.
And that's what I got to say here is those
two guys just seemed like they made every key play
that the Celtics needed down the stretch to get to
overtime and then to keep it close when the Celtics
did get to overtime. So props to Drew Holliday and
Al Horford a bunch of winning plays today. Obviously Boston

(08:03):
was not able to win the game, but those guys
still deserve attention for what they brought to the table
in the right place at the right time all the time.
Huge offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, blocks, big shots throughout the game.
Joe Holliday is the one who forced overtime with his
cutting layup, so again, props to those guys. They played

(08:23):
at a very high level. On the other side of
the ball. This was the og Ananobi and Jalen Brunson show.
Each of those guys scored twenty nine points. In comparison,
no member of the Boston Celtics scored more than twenty three,
So again, you got two of the top scorers in
the game, each scoring twenty nine points. Meanwhile, none of
the Celtics scored more than twenty three. Anonoby was awesome

(08:45):
six of eleven from three point range. Jalen Brunson not
quite the same efficiency. He was five for nine from
three point range, only nine for twenty three on the night.
The Celtics really played great defense against him, but he
still finds a way to make big shots and to
put his team in position to win. He is the
clutch player of the year in the NBA, and he

(09:07):
played like a tonight outside of that one miss that
he had at the end of regulation.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
That's what I got outline.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
Now we're gonna jump into some comments from the fans
and listen, not all the fans are happy, Okay, I
understand that the Celtics just gave away home court advantage.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
But let's dive in right now.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
So our first comment is coming in from it Y
s LTD Garden, and that's on how the Celtics looked
physically during this Game one. Then we've got Sean, who
doesn't seem to think this type of loss will happen again.
I like that a glass half full from Sean. And
then last but now least, we've got Kim Schef on
what led to this defeat in Game one. For the

(09:45):
Boston Celtics. So again let's dive into the first one here.
This is about how the Celtics looked physically during this game.
All right, first comment up here, it is I t
y s LTD. Garden says looked tired, which is weird
after five days of rest. And yes, we will talk
about that. The Boston Celtics did close out in five games.

(10:08):
Their last game was last Tuesday against the Orlando Magic.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
They closed out.

Speaker 1 (10:13):
And meanwhile, the New York Knicks did not on that night,
and the New York Knicks had to play Thursdays. So
the Knicks get just a few days off while the
Celtics get five days off.

Speaker 2 (10:22):
And it did look like the Celtics.

Speaker 1 (10:25):
I wouldn't say tired, That's not the word that I
would use to describe them. But they looked out of rhythm.
It looked like they lost. And by the way, I
think two things impact here. Number One, they had five
days off. Number two, they did not play their style
of offense during the first round against Orlando. Again, I
said that in the open the Celtics had to adjust

(10:46):
the way that they were playing offense. And this isn't
to say that they can't get back to the way
that they played offense. But it's been like two or
three weeks since the end of the regular season when
the Celtics were really playing their brand of basketball at
the offense. So tonight it YSLTD. Gardens says that they
look tired. That comments that that is weird. I do

(11:09):
think it is a little bit strange that the Celtics
looked like they were kind of stuck in mud a
little bit tonight again, not moving the ball, not moving bodies,
not what you typically see out of them, and not
what we saw out of them at all during the
regular season against the New York Knicks. Again, I would
not use the word tired to describe them. I would
use the word out of words, out of rhythm. They

(11:30):
just didn't seem to have their rhythm during this game.
But my confidence is there that they're going to get
it back in Game two. They've had it all season long.
Usually when it leaves, it doesn't leave for very long.
It comes back quickly, and the Boston Celtics find their
rhythm at the offensive end. So that is what I'm
looking forward to hopefully happening Wednesday night when these teams
meet again for Game two.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
All right.

Speaker 1 (11:53):
Next up is Sean, who I will remind you a
little bit of a glass half full comment here. So
let's take this from Sean who says, blowing a twenty
point lead is unacceptable, But how many games will they
shoot thirty five percent from the field and twenty five
percent from three with that many open looks? And even
then it took ot in a three point loss for

(12:16):
the New York Knicks to be able to grab a win.
These are some things I'm with you here, Sean, that
there are some circumstances that we really need to talk about.
Everyone's going to be talking about how poor the offense looked.
Everyone's going to be talking about how many three point
misses the Celtics have had during this game. What not
everyone is going to be talking about, which they should
be talking about, is the fact that that all happened.

(12:39):
In addition to the fact that the Celtics we were
without two of their top nine players almost for the
entirety of this game. Chris has Porzingis left the game
with a non COVID illness. He only played what thirteen
minutes in this game, twelve fifty eight, A little bit
of the first quarter, tiny bit of the second quarter
and then he was out. This is their starting center,

(13:01):
who is a game changer at both ends of the court,
gone for the final three quarters and overtime. Also, Sam
Houser played less than four minutes before he sprained his
right ankle. One of the NBA's best marksmen from long distance,
they lost him during this game. So they wound up
only having seven of their top nine players. And by

(13:23):
the way, I'm not making any excuses, the Celtics had
enough to get this done. However, I'm what I am
saying is that you've got to look at the full picture.
They were without two of their top nine players for
basically the entire game. Howser went out barely played only
four minutes, and Christas Porzingis only played the first quarter

(13:44):
in a little tiny bit of the second quarter, So
they're missing those two of the top nine guys. They
also shoot thirty five percent from the field twenty five
percent from three point range. The Celtics don't do that.
They have too much skill. They've done it all season long.
They don't go cold like that. So you're missing two
of your top nine and you also shoot the ball

(14:05):
as poorly as you ever have in this game still
goes to overtime, Boston still only loses by three points.
Now credit to New York. New York did what it
had to do to grab the win. All I'm saying
here is that let's look at the whole picture. Okay,

(14:25):
the Celtics still almost won this game, despite having one
of their worst offensive performances of this season, and while
missing two of their top nine players for almost the
entirety of this game. So, Sean, I appreciate you pointing
this out. A little bit of a glass half full. Again,
this is not excuses. This is just parts of the

(14:48):
night that did occur. These are facts. These are not
made up. So the fact that the Celtus only lost
by three, had a chance to tie it with seventeen
seconds left, they just didn't get the shot off. The
the fact that they only lost by three in overtime
despite all that other stuff. Things could have been much worse.
But you don't want to blow a twenty point lead.

Speaker 2 (15:09):
That can't happen, all right, folks. Last comment of the night.

Speaker 1 (15:14):
This one's coming in from Kim Chef, who says they
got cute up twenty started shooting threes to break it. Open,
didn't move the ball and settled.

Speaker 2 (15:23):
Deserved to lose. You don't play with the game.

Speaker 1 (15:28):
All right throughout this episode, we've already spoken about the
fact that the Boston Celtics were chucking up threes and
trying to break it open. Yeah, once they got up
by the way, they got up by twenty.

Speaker 2 (15:39):
Because they did make a few threes. Let's not forget
that part.

Speaker 1 (15:42):
But they kept taking them and they did not make them,
and it allowed the Knicks to get back into the game.
I want to concentrate on the last sentence here, deserved
to lose. You don't play with the game. And it's
the last part that I want to concentrate on. You
don't play it with the game. Don't take this for granted,
don't take the opportunity for granted. Don't play a brand

(16:02):
of basketball that is not what you typically play. Play
the way you have played all season long that got
you here. Play the way that got you the number
two seed in the East, that had you grab a
four to one series lead in series victory during the
first round. Play the way that won you a championship
last season. If the Celtics get back to that, I

(16:25):
have no concerns. You shouldn't have any concerns. This team
is again too talented, it's too experienced, and it's too
good in all facets of the game. One of only
two teams in the NBA to rank in the top
five in both defensive and offensive efficiency this season. So

(16:47):
you can't play with the game. You got to play
your brand of basketball. And that brand of basketball is
not settling. It's not taking step back threes, it's not
not moving the ball, it's not not moving bodies. Play
with pace, move the ball, take good shots, take shots.

Speaker 2 (17:05):
That are in rhythm, and you're gonna be just fine.
All right.

Speaker 1 (17:09):
So that's what I gotta say, Kim. I appreciate you
sending in the comment and keeping it real here. We're
gonna keep it real as we move forward. Okay, New
York stole game one. It marched into TD Garden and
stole Game one. And after the game, by the way,
when I was outside, okay, taking a brief walk outside
outside of Ted Garden, New York Knicks fans, we're surrounding

(17:31):
statues out front channing Nixon four. We got a little
something to take care of Wednesday night. Okay, the Boston
Celtics are gonna try to even this thing up. Wednesday
night tip off again is at seven o'clock and you
can catch that game on TNT and we appreciate you
tuning in tonight. Folks send in your comments after every

(17:52):
great game and you might be a part of the
sound Off postgame podcast.

Speaker 2 (17:56):
I'm Mark Tamiko.

Speaker 1 (17:57):
Again, I appreciate you listen or watching on you to
note again
