Speaker 1 (00:06):
Sound off with me, folks on finally tasting that sweet
taste of victory. That's right, the Celtics avoided in zero
to four stars of the season by drubbing the Pelicans
in New Orleans on Monday night. This is what we've
wanted to see out of these guys since early on
(00:26):
in the regular season.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Tonight, when they.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Took the court, it just looked like they had a
different energy and a different confidence about them. And part
of that might have been that this was yet another
new starting lineup. I believe in four games now, three
different starting lineups, it's been kind of a rotating door
at that small forward position. They started out with Sam Hauser,
(00:50):
then they went to Ugo Gonzales, and then tonight they
went to Josh may Not and Josh miy Not made
a difference, but in general, with this entire team, this
feels like what this Celtics group can be. This is
what they can be when they rebound, this is what
they can be when they shoot it even close to
(01:10):
their standards. This is what they can be and it
was a lot of fun to watch. As I said,
Josh mayn Not got the first start of his Celtics
career and his first start of his NBA career, and
we're gonna talk about him more later on with one
of our comments from the fans, but just an outstanding
performance from him really was an important part of the
(01:33):
Celtics being able to pull away and dominate this game.
They led basically from start to finish, and actually they
they might have led from start to finish.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
I'm gonna take a look now.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
No, the Pelicans had a one point lead at one point,
so the Celtics almost led from start to finish. And
it all began in the first five seconds when Josh
mayn Nott took the very first offensive possession in for
a transition dunk right off the opening tip. So he
set the tone and the rest of the Celtics followed suit.
(02:03):
Anthony Simons is starting to show Celtics fans what he's
all about. This guy, I've been telling you is an elite,
elite shooter like he's legit one of the best in
the world. He fits the system. He's been talking about
us since he came here with the Celtics. Yes, he
wants to grow and develop as a player, particularly defensively,
(02:24):
but offensively, this guy can shoot the lights out. Like
he's a thirty eight percent career three point shooter as
a primary scoring option for the Portland Trail Blazers. Now
he's coming here and obviously he is a primary scoring
option for the Celtics here as well, but he's not
the number one and so he's gonna get a lot
(02:45):
of quality looks just like he got tonight, and he
drained them in. Excellent performance from him. Feels like he's
really getting more and more comfortable with every game that
he takes the floor for the Celtics. He's just learned
his teammates. Remember, this is the first time he's been traded,
so this is the first time he's working himself into
(03:06):
a new system, working himself into a brand new team
with guys he's never played with before. More and more
comfortable with every game that he plays in Tonight, he
explodes for twenty five points, six of thirteen from long range,
twelve points during the fourth quarter. He was a huge
reason why Boston won this game. And I guarantee you
(03:27):
he's gonna continue to play that type of role as
the Celtics season rolls on. Don't know how many wins
they're gonna log this season. We're gonna have to wait
until mid April to find out what that number is.
But whatever that number is, I would bet my life
on the fact that Anthony Simons will play a very
(03:48):
significant role in many of those victories that come along
because he is a professional scorer and the Celtics needs
scoring on this team. They don't have Jason Tatum, they
don't have all those guys. We don't need to harp
on up with all those guys that went out the
door during the offseason.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
They need someone.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Else to score at a high rate. And that is
exactly what Simons has done for his entire career. So
tonight he explodes for twenty five. That's his current career
high with the Boston Celtics. We know he's going to
pass that moving forward. But a great, great performance from
him really helped the Celtics get out and really pull
(04:28):
away for this win.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Now. I said it a.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
Couple of minutes ago that the Celtics won this game
because they cleaned up a couple issues from the first
three games. They rebounded the basketball sixty six to forty
six overall, sixteen to eleven on the offensive glass. In
that five rebound advantage on the offensive less. It felt
(04:53):
even bigger than that. When I looked at the box score,
I was actually surprised that it was only sixteen to eleven.
The Celtics control the offensive glass throughout this game, and
I guess you could say the defensive glass for when
they were rebounding the misses from the New Orleans Pelicans,
but they really felt like they had a significant advantage
(05:15):
in offensive rebounding numbers throughout this game. So I'm actually
surprised that it was sixteen to eleven. I bet you
New Orleans got a few down the stretch when they
were missing a ton of shots. But great job by
the Celtics finally being able to protect the glass at
both ends. That's exactly what they need to do, and
they're not going to do this every night. We understand
that this Pelicans team was missing Zion Williamson tonight. Zion
(05:38):
Williamson is one of the more athletic players and big,
strong players that we have in the NBA. I'm sure
it would have changed a little bit if he was
out there, but you can only play the opponent that's
on the floor, and tonight the Boston Celtics controlled the
glass overall sixty six rebounds. That includes twelve team rebounds,
(06:00):
so only fifty four that were actually grabbed by the team.
But we'll take that sixty six to forty six number
all day long. The Celtics also shot the ball well.
They made eighteen threes, and guys, I just have to
say this, they can be even better from distance. They
made eighteen tonight. I'm telling you they can be even better.
(06:22):
I actually don't even think that the eighteen threes on
what was it, thirty four percent shooting from distance, like,
I actually think those numbers are going to wind up
being below their average this season from distance. I think
they're going to be better than that in the long run.
And one thing these guys can do is shoot, Okay,
(06:45):
Derek White can shoot, Peyton Pritchard can shoot, Anthony Simons
can shoot. Sam Houser can shoot. We have a lot
of shooters on this team and we haven't had all
of them. And by the way, Jaylen Brown is shooting
the lights out this season. Uh not actually someone who's
regarded around the league as like a marksman from long distance,
but he could shoot it as well. So we haven't
(07:09):
yet gotten to a point where all of these guys
are in an offensive rhythm from long distance that's gonna
come at some point. Not saying that they're all gonna shoot,
you know, forty plus percent in the same game eight
out of ten nights.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
No, that's not gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
But if you have let's say five premier shooters from distance,
if three or four of them shoot it well on
any given night, they're gonna have a great chance to
win the game. So they rebounded well, they shot the
ball well, and I think there's even more room for
improvement from both of those perspectives as the Celtics move forward.
(07:46):
All right, let's dive into a couple comments from our fans.
First up, we've got Joseph Paul Mary on just how
competitive the Celtics team is and has been and can
be this season. Then we've got keV with two v's
on an absolutely absurd Josh my not stat You gotta
stay around and listen to this because it's crazy, all right,
(08:08):
So let's dive into the first one here, Joseph Paul Mary.
It's all you, buddy, all right, Joseph Paul Mary says,
and this is a long one, so bear with me here.
If they rebound the ball they're actually a good team,
not a great team by any means, but they're a
solid team and still can shoot the ball very well. Also,
(08:29):
they could easily be four and oh if they just
rebounded the ball at a mediocre level. To be honest,
they have been competitive in every game, to be honest,
some things to clean up, but they're going to be
a pain to play any night for anybody. They hustle
all of them and play their butts off.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
All right, long comment from Joseph Paul Mary.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
I appreciate you putting in all the thought and relaying
everything that you were taking away from this game. Hard
to disagree with a lot of this, but I want
to concentrate on that last sentence and Joseph says, some
things to clean up, but they're going to be a
pain to play any night for anybody because they hustle
all of them and play their butts off. This is
(09:17):
what makes teams fun to watch. It especially makes teams
that are maybe a little overlooked, maybe a little bit underrated.
It makes those teams so fun to watch. You rewind
back to those twenty seventeen twenty eighteen years when you
had Isaiah Thomas and the boys outperforming all expectations. They
(09:39):
were so much fun to watch because they played so hard.
Every one of them that took the floor played so hard.
It was a blue collar effort team that obviously had
some skill as well, a lot of skill when you're
talking about Isaiah Thomas and some of the guys around him,
including Jaylen Brown and Chase and Tatum, but it was
(10:02):
that effort in how hard they played that really made
you love them. And when you play against it's just
like the Miami Heat. Like every year, the Miami Heat
are going to be a pain in the ass to
play against because they play so hard. It's fun to
(10:22):
watch when the Celtics do this, when everyone one through fifteen,
whoever steps on the court, plays with that level of effort,
and we're seeing it this year.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
Okay, it hasn't.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
Led to perfect basketball so far, but these guys play
hard and it's so fun to watch, especially some of
these new guys, including the two new guys who started
at small forward in the past couple of games, Ugo Gonzales. Yes,
the Celtics lost last night in Detroit, but Ugo looked
(10:59):
great in that game. He looked great in the second
game of the season in New York. Fun to see
these guys give effort and just sacrifice their bodies and
fly all over the court. Josh why Not starts tonight
the exact same thing. This type of stuff spreads among
(11:20):
a roster, Like when Peyton Pritchard sees those guys flying around,
he's gonna fly around. When Jalen Brown sees Peyton Pritchard
flying around, He's gonna fly around. It is infectious throughout
a roster. So it has been a lot of fun
to see that particular characteristic showing up night in and
night out so far the season. And I don't think
(11:41):
that's going anywhere. Joe Mizula has been preaching these guys
like that's that's how we can take away some of
the other team's margins is by playing hard, and they
do it and tight.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
Tonight.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
Not only did they play hard and they hustled everywhere,
played their butts off, as Joseph Palmery says, but they
also played well. And when you put those two things together,
you got a pretty good team that I think a
lot of opponents they're not gonna have fun playing against
this team through the throughout the season. So Joseph Palmery again,
(12:17):
appreciate the lengthy comment. That was a lot of insight
into what you're taking away from the Celtics so far
this season. Keep them coming the rest of the season.
And let's dive into our next one here. This one's
coming up from our friend keV with two v's. All right, folks,
As I said, keV with two v's is our final
comment of the night, and he says, Josh may Not
(12:40):
a plus forty two out there.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
He is a starter going forward, period.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
And then we've got a screenshot of the box score
with a nice beautiful highlight around Josh Maynott's name with
a plus forty two in the plus minus category.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
Insane like insane? Are you kidding me? Plus forty two
in twenty eight minutes of action.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
Just to be clear, no other player on Boston's roster
was greater than a plus twenty seven in this game.
Josh miy Not made an incredible impact in this game.
He did it last night when he scored ten straight
points for the Celtics in Detroit. And then he comes back,
gets his first start of his NBA career, nearly logs
(13:27):
a double double in twenty six minutes excuse me, twenty
eight minutes, fifteen points, nine rebounds, a steal and assist,
a block shot, six of nine from the field, one
of three from three point range, drills both of his
free throws, which, by the way, he is better than
a ninety one percent free throw shooter in his career.
(13:50):
I don't think many people know that. You find it
out here on sound Off, a ninety one plus percent
free throw shooter for his career. This guy's got some talent.
Number one and number two.
Speaker 2 (14:06):
He's got that effort level.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
I said it last night and sound Off that he's
got a little bit of like a mean streak to him.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
I love what I see from this guy.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
And talking about the infectious situation that happens when you
see guys playing hard.
Speaker 2 (14:24):
Josh might not.
Speaker 1 (14:26):
The way that he plays is infectious, like that is
one impacting his teammates when they see the way that
he's playing every single possession. And I do love the
a little bit of the emotional run that he goes on,
like he made that three in this game, and like
he was yelling to the crowd, talking smack to the
(14:46):
other team into the crowd, like he he has a
little bit of an emotional streak to him, in an
emotional edge to him that not a lot of guys
on the Celtics team have so really fun to watch
that come out out And I mean.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
KeV is right here.
Speaker 1 (15:03):
You're a plus forty two with a near double double,
with excellent shooting, splits across the board like you're a
starter until further notice. I'd be surprised if he does
not start Wednesday night and moving forward until the Celtics
feel like they need to continue tweaking and seeing who
should be in that starting lineup, and listen, if he
doesn't start in any of those games, it has nothing
(15:24):
to do with him. Joe Mizoula has made it very
clear since the preseason that the starting lineup is probably
going to be a little bit of a rotating door,
revolving door, and that we're gonna see people in, people out.
It's gonna depend on who they're playing, who's playing well
with the Celtics need on that given night. Well, I
(15:45):
think in the interim we're gonna have a pretty good
idea of what that starting lineup looks like, and it's
gonna look a lot like tonight. I would put my
money on that but who the heck knows, but Jalen Brown,
Josh may Not, Nimash Keda, Derek White, and Peyton Pritchard,
all of them combined to really put this game away
for the Boston Celtics. All of them or four out
(16:08):
of the five with a plus ten or better in
the plus minus category. Jalen Brown was only a plus four.
He didn't have the greatest game of his life, only
had fifteen points in this game, but was in fol
trouble throughout the game, just never really got a rhythm.
But that is a starting lineup that I think that
we are going to see here moving forward, at least
for the short term, Like we're probably going to see
(16:28):
it Wednesday, might see it after that, although who the
heck knows. We're playing against a team in the Cleveland
Cavaliers who has a pretty big front line, so maybe
maybe we see yet another starting lineup from our dear
friend and.
Speaker 2 (16:41):
Head coach Joe Mizzoula.
Speaker 1 (16:43):
But a lot of fun to watch Josh Mayn not
in the way that he's impacting this team so far, Like,
is Brad Stevens a genius?
Speaker 2 (16:51):
How does he know? How does he know? This guy
barely played and ever since the first preseason game that
he stepped onto the court, people are looking around.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
Who is Josh may Not? Who is this guy? Because
he looks like an impact player. And again, when I
say impact player, I don't mean he's gonna score twenty
five points or dominate a game like that. No, he's
gonna impact the game with his effort and by doing
the little things. And tonight those little things led to
(17:21):
fifteen points, to nine rebounds and a steal and a
block in efficient shooting across the board. So hopefully we
continue to see that. But really looks like Josh may
Not might be that diamond in the rough that the
Celtics were looking for. We're gonna continue to keep our
eyes on him and the rest of the Celtics. They
are going to be searching for their second win of
(17:41):
the season. Wednesday night. They're coming back home after this
three game road trip in which they went one and two.
They're back home for a quick one game stan Wednesday
night against the Cleveland Cavaliers. That's a seven o'clock tip
off at TD Garden, And right after that, the Celtics
are back on the road to face off yet again
with that team they faced on opening night the Philadelphia
seventy six ers. So again Wednesday night at home. We
(18:04):
will have both the audio and the video version of
sound off after that game. Make sure you send in
your comments after the final tip to me on X.
I'll take a couple of them, maybe even a few
of them, seeing how that game goes, and I will
talk to you after that game, folks. First win of
the season for the Boston Celtics. We got that winning feeling,
we got that juju going. Let's keep it rolling Wednesday night,
(18:26):
all right, I'll see you them, folks until then.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
One and three for the Boston Celtics.
Speaker 1 (18:31):
Let's keep it rolling against the Cats.
