Speaker 1 (00:06):
Sound off with me folks on the worst offensive performance
of the season for the Boston Celtics. That's right, it
was an ugly one for Boston. It was an ugly
one for the fans to watch. And as we all
know who pay attention to everything, the Celtics were missing
(00:28):
their entire starting five plus Al Horford, and they were
taking on a playoff team tonight in the Orlando Magic,
who may wind up being the team that the Celtics
face in the first round of the NBA playoffs. Right now,
the Celtics are pretty much locked into the number two seed.
In fact, I think they are locked in mathematically at
(00:51):
this point into the number two seed. It looks like
the Magic are pretty much locked, if not totally locked
into the seventh seed for the play in in the
Eastern Conference. So it looks like the Magic are gonna
wind up hosting the seven to eight game of the
playing and the winner of that game is the team
that will go on to face the Boston Celtics in
(01:13):
the first round of the playoffs. And I just want
to say this, whatever happens in the playoffs will not
look like this. Okay, just a quick reminder, this was
not the real Boston Celtics. This was about half of
the real Boston Celtics, so a little perspective.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
For this defeat.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
But the Celtics wind up losing ninety six to seventy
six at the hands of the Magic. And those seventy
six points weren't just the lowest of the season for
Boston in terms of a total in a game, they
were the lowest by far the next lowest scoring total
of the season for the Boston Celtics.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
With ninety two.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
That is sixteen more points than they managed to score
tonight against the Orlando Magic.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
And by the way, oh wait, you got a credit.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Orlando like that team under Jamal Mosley has been a
great defensive team for multiple seasons now. They've been really
good all year this year as well, despite losing some
of their most important defensive players. But the Celtics just
didn't have it tonight. Like they couldn't make shots, they
didn't have a rhythm. They were throwing lineups out there
(02:21):
that we haven't seen all season long, and that wound
up with the Celtics scoring only seventy six points in
four quarters, never scoring more than twenty one in a
single quarter, and on the night, they shoot just thirty
nine percent from the field and oh god, plug your ears,
seventeen point five percent from three point range. It just
was not their night. They couldn't get it going, and
(02:44):
it was ugly to watch. I think it was ugly
to experience for them, and I think it's time to
just flush it down the toilet and move on to
Friday night, when the Celtics play their second to last
home game of the season, when they play host to
the Charlotte Hornets, who they will also play host to
on Sunday to close out season. Now, after this loss,
Joe Missoula went to the podium, answered some questions and
(03:07):
then got to a certain point and he thought, you
know what, I'm gonna provide everyone in here that is
in the media room, everyone who's watching, with a little
bit of perspective after this game and how this wound
up happening. He answered, like I said, a few questions,
and then at some point he said, listen, I appreciate
(03:29):
everyone's creativity, but we got into the hotel at four
point thirty in the morning last night. Remember the Celtics
played last night in New York against the Knicks. And
if you have not flown in and out of New
York City in the middle of the night, trying to
get out of town and get to the airport. And
by the way, the Celtics usually fly out of Newark,
(03:51):
New Jersey, it takes a long time to get from
MSG to the airport. Then he got aboard the plane,
then he got a fly all the way down to
the middle of Florida. So the Celtics touched down and
eventually got to their hotel near the property of Disney
(04:12):
at four thirty in the morning last night.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Now, is that an excuse. No.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
The way I look at that is it's a reason.
It's a reason why the guys like Listen, Sam Houser
and Peyton Pritch are two of the best shooters in
the entire NBA, were kind of coming up short on
their jumpers.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
All night long.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
That to me says something like, these guys just didn't
feel good during this game, and they felt like they
were playing with about a half tank of gas. So listen,
sometimes these things are baked into the schedule. Sometimes you
gotta try to battle through, and sometimes you just don't
(04:54):
have what it takes to battle through, And tonight was
one of those nights. For the Boston Celtics, particularly as
they were missing again six of their top seven players
in the rotation, including their entire starting fed. Right after Choue,
Mizoula said that, you know the whole I appreciate everyone's creativity,
but we got it in the hotel for He's like, guys.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
What are we doing right now?
Speaker 1 (05:14):
Appreciate you like trying to figure out a way to
ask questions and put together a postgame story, but what
are we doing here?
Speaker 2 (05:21):
We all know what happened.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
We played without six of our top seven and we
got to the hotel at four thirty in the morning
last night.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
And these people are human.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
You don't just wake up the next day feeling great
just because you're an NBA basketball player after you went
to bed at four thirty in the morning after a
full workday of the day before. So, you know, not
Boston's night, But there were still some bright spots. Peyton Pritchard,
as I mentioned, didn't quite have it from a shooting perspective,
(05:50):
was coming up short on a bunch of his shots.
Still wound up with a double double in this game,
led the game and assists with ten of his own.
That was I think the next highest total on the
Celtics was three. I think he also scored fifteen points,
so a nice double double from him during a spot
start while playing about thirty five minutes. Also, Luke Cornett
(06:12):
scored fourteen points in including a couple of did we
really see that? Were those mid range jumpers out of
Luke Cornett? Like, I think he's got a little bit
more in the bag than what we've been seeing all
of this season. Yeah, Luke Cornette was put into a
position a couple of times where he had to bail
the Celtics out offensively, and he did just that by
canning a couple of mid range jumpers, one of which
(06:33):
was kind of a fade away looking like a little
bit of Dirk in there off of one foot. Luke Cornett, Yes,
showing us a little bit more skill than anyone has
seen this season because that man plays within his role.
Tonight his role changed a little bit, but it is
what it is. We also saw some bright moments from
Baylor shireman who I think for everyone who's been following
(06:55):
the Celtics over the course of the last month or so,
we've been seeing some flash from this guy, and we
saw more of them tonight Baylor. Shierman finishes this game
tonight with fifteen points to match Peyton Pritchard for the
team high. Shot six or fourteen from the field, not great,
but what I look at is he was five to
seven from inside the ark.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
He didn't have his shooting stroke from distance.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
Nor did anyone on the Boston Celtics tonight outside of
maybe Miles Norris, who were going to touch on in
a little bit, but really had some nice moments finishing
at the rim. Had a nice driving lefty floater that
he somehow put through the through the basket after he
tossed it off the very top of the backboard. Just
beautiful touch and being able to make that play through
(07:41):
contact at the rim. Was making some plays for others,
had a few assists during this game. There was a
couple moments on those drives to the basket where listen,
take this with a grain of salt, but like the
way that he was maneuvering looked kind of like Luka Doncic.
And when I say that, I just mean, you know,
you're not overpowering with your athleticism or your size, or
(08:04):
your speed or anything like that. It's like you've just
got to play at this pace to get the defender
off of his rhythm for you to be able to
create space to get a shot off. And he did
that a couple times tonight and I thought to me,
who does that look like? Oh my god, that's kind
of the way Luca plays. So not saying that he
is Luca, not saying he's going to be Luca. I'm
(08:25):
just saying there were some similarities in terms of like
the pace, in the herky jerkiness of their game, in
the way that he was putting the ball through the
basket tonight, so great to see. As I said, he
didn't shoot the ball well, but who cares as long
as he's showing flashes of this consistently, which he has been.
And by the way, it's much easier for him to
(08:47):
fit in and play well when he's playing around a
bunch of future Hall of famers on this team. So
tonight was kind of like an aberisin of what we're
going to see from him on a normal night. But
he didn't shoot the ball well, who cares. He continues
to show flashes and that's great to see. So definitely
a few bright spots and we've got a couple more
that are being pointed out by our fans. So let's
take some comments from our fans. First up, tonight, we've
(09:09):
got Justin Condo on what he saw from Miles Norris,
the aforementioned Niles Morris on this night. Then we've got
Frank Flynn who's got a wild Luke Cornette stat that
you've got to stay around to listen to. This doesn't
even make any mathematical sense. And then lastly, we've got
Cabs or Cobs sorry if I'm not pronouncing this right
as Kabs, who highlights a positive from this game that
(09:33):
not many people seem to be talking about right now
in the aftermath of this law. So again, let's do
the first one here. This is coming in from my guy,
Justin Condo. First up, it is Justin Kano with the
first comment of the night, and here it is liked
what I saw from Miles Norris, played with good energy,
(09:54):
crashed the boards and hit a few threes. Has a
pretty good feel for the game as well. Listen, I
respect what Justin Conno says. He watches every single Celtics
game comments all the time on social media. Love to
hear from you and appreciate this comment and I tend
to agree with you. This is only the second game
that Miles Norris has played for the Boston Celtics. His
(10:16):
first one was back on March sixth, and I've got
to admit this, I was still on parental leave at
that time, so I didn't even get to watch that game.
I haven't been able to watch many of his minutes
with the Main Celtics either, But tonight I really liked
what I saw, Like he's got a really nice release
from long distance, and I have heard that he was
(10:36):
connecting at a pretty high rate when he was playing
with the Main Celtics earlier this season. Made two for
four from long distance tonight for his six points, grabbed
a few rebounds, grabbed two steals, and this was all
in less than twenty minutes of action. So Miles Norris
kind of a name that's slipped under the radar. The
Celtics signed him to a two way deal or back
(10:58):
a few months ago when they moved on from another
player and they wanted to bring him in. And you
can see why, Like this guy can shoot it from distance.
He plays with a ton of energy, as Justin Condo said,
And you know, if this is someone who has to
come on the court and for some reason or another
play along it. Just like I was saying with Baylor Shireman,
when these guys get on the court with other players
(11:21):
like Hall of famers, Hall of Fame level players like
Tatum Brown, Horford, Holiday, maybe White, maybe poorzingis when these
guys are surrounded by them, they're gonna play it an
even higher level because the game is going to be
made so much easier for them. So seeing him play
well on a night where he's not surrounded by those
(11:42):
guys is even more promising. So we've heard great reports
on what he's brought to the table during his time
with the Main Celtics. Now we're starting to see some
of that transfer over to his time here with the
Boston Celtics. Again, only his second appearance here with Boston
played once back on March sixth against the Philadelphia said
any six Ers did not score during that game, did
(12:02):
not attempt a shot, So tonight means that Miles Norris
scored his very first points with the Boston Celtics. So
congrats to Miles. A couple of smooth three pointers from distance.
We hope to see many more, especially during the final
couple games. Of this season, we've only got a couple more.
I got a feeling that we might see Miles and
(12:23):
some of these other guys getting a lot more minutes
during those final couple contests. So congrats to Miles and Justin.
I appreciate you sening in your comment. All right, next
comment tonight is coming in from Frank Flynn. I told
you in the teaser a moment ago that this is
a wild Luke Cornett stat that I didn't even see
when I looked at the boss scord. Listen to this
(12:45):
Frank Flynn word for word here on his post. Of course,
Luke is a plus two in a twenty point loss. Okay,
let's run through this here for everyone who hasn't looked
at the box score and doesn't really comprehend what Frank
Flinn is saying here. There is a column in the
box score that is called the plus minus category. Okay,
(13:08):
what that category is is it calculates how much your
team either outscored the opponent or was outscored by the
opponent while you were on the floor. Typically, in a
blowout loss, everyone is going to be in the negative.
And if you look at Boston's box score, pretty much
everyone was, especially everyone who didn't play many minutes. I mean,
(13:30):
Xavier Tillman was a plus one, he only played for
seven to twenty three.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
JD.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
Davison was a plus one. He played less than seventeen minutes.
But if you scroll up and you look at Luke Cornett,
the starting center for the Boston Celtics, one of only
one two, three, four five, one of only six Celtics
to play more than twenty five minutes in this game. Okay,
more than twenty minutes in this game actually, somehow, in
(13:57):
his nearly twenty six minutes of action, Boston outscored Orlando
by two points in a twenty point loss. Give you
a little bit more perspective, Three of the other four
starters finished with a plus minus of at least negative twelve.
In the other one finished with a negative eight. Luke
(14:19):
Cornett was a plus two. That plus two was the best.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
On the team.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
No one else had anything better than a plus one.
So really incredible to actually see that Luke Cornett. The
Celtics played at a pretty good level while he was
on the court tonight, and by the way, he wound
up finishing with fourteen points, three boards, and assist a
steal a block, just getting it done across the board,
shot seven of ten from the field, and as I
(14:44):
mentioned earlier in the episode, dropped in a couple of midies.
Tonight saw a little wrinkle in his game in doing
something that we haven't seen from him in quite some time,
maybe dating back to his days with the New York
Knicks when he was like a three point shooter. He
was trying to be a stretch three. That's not who
he is with the Boston Celtics. But tonight he kind
of went outside that comfort zone and tried to provide
(15:05):
the Celtics with a little bit more of offense. And
he did fourteen points. That was the second highest total
on the team. So again, Luke Cornett somehow finishing with
a plus two while playing nearly twenty six minutes as
the Celtics lost by twenty points. It's a crazy stat.
I can't believe it's actually real. I had to look
it up twice after I saw this comment from Frank Flynn.
(15:27):
So great observation from you. Frank keeps sending him in
after the games here the rest of the season. All right, folks,
Next up with the last comment of the night. It
is cabs or cobbs. I'm not sure how to pronounce this.
It's kabs, however you pronounce it. I appreciate you sending
it in. And this is a great observation that not
(15:49):
many people are paying attention to after this game. The
offense not so good, the defense pretty elite. And here's
the comment, held them the Orlando Magic under one hundred
in this game. Have you thought about that since this
game ended, because I hadn't really won this game, and
I was thinking about the offense kind of being stuck
(16:11):
in mud. But really, the guys that played in this
game played at a very high level defensively and held
the number seven seed in the East, who pretty much
has all of their guys. I mean, they have some
guys that are out for the season, but this this
is the group that's going to play in the playoffs.
Ben Kara was out there, Franz Wagner was out there,
(16:33):
Wendell Carter Junior was out there, KCP he started the game.
At least Corey Joseph was out there. Anthony black Hole, Anthony.
They had pretty much all of their guys who are
going to play in the postseason were available tonight. They
only scored ninety six points, they only shot forty point
seven percent from the field. They only got to the
(16:53):
line for eight throws eight free throw attempts. So while
this group of Celtics, this makeshift group of Celtics that
got thrown together tonight for again many lineups that we
haven't seen all season long, these guys didn't get it
done on offense, but they did get it done on defense.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
So great to see.
Speaker 1 (17:14):
That these guys can come in and be able to
overcome what was going off or going on at one
end of the court and still be able to play
at a high level at the other end of the court.
That shows mental strength, mental fortitude, and it shows an
ability that the Boston Celtics are going to need in
the postseason when they're trying to make a run to
a second consecutive NBA championship. You don't do that without defense,
(17:39):
as we all know, and as we all saw last
year on that run to the championship. You've got to
be able to play defense. And it looks like even
on a night like tonight, everyone on the roster is
not only willing but also able to contribute at that
end of the court. And this Boston Celtics team. Dependent
on what's going to happen in the final couple games,
(18:00):
they're almost sure to finish in the top five defensively
in the league. In terms of defensive efficiency, they're also
in the top five in offensive efficiency. It is them
and the Oklahoma City Thunder the only teams in the
league to be in the top five in both of
those categories. So that is a great sign for the
(18:20):
Boston Celtics. Now, let's move on from tonight's game. This
was an ugly loss. Roll it up, crumple it up,
throw it in the trash, move on, fly back to Boston.
If you're the Celtics and get ready to play your
final two games of the season. Both of them are
coming at home. Both of them are coming against the
Charlotte Hornets. The first is up on Friday night at
(18:41):
seven point thirty and the second is coming on Sunday
with a one o'clock tip at TD Garden. I appreciate
you giving me a listen. Make sure you tune in
on Friday night. We're gonna be on YouTube, We're gonna
be on all your favorite podcast platforms, And make sure
you respond to my post on X right after the
final buzzer with your comments on what you saw from
(19:03):
the game and what you're thinking about the Celtics moving forward.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
Again, thanks for giving a listen.
Speaker 1 (19:08):
Happy Wednesday night, have a great rest of the week,
and I'll see you Friday night.
