The Boston Celtics bounced back from an ugly loss Friday night, and they did it in eye-popping fashion against the Orlando Magic. Jaylen Brown led the display of offensive fireworks by dropping a game-high 35 points as the Celtics scored a season high 138 points, including 80 during the first half alone. It was also Brown who hit the two biggest shots of the night to slam the door shut on Orlando’s unsuccessful comeback bid.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
Sound off with me folks on the Boston Celtics putting
a big old stop signed in front of a red
hot Orlando Magic team Sunday night at TD Garden on
move for Heather Night. This is the Boston Celtics postgame
podcast presented by Xfinity Mobile and it's time to talk
about Boston's win over the Orlando Magic. This was an

(00:28):
offensive outburst by the Boston Celtics. In fact, it was
their highest scoring first half and highest scoring half in
general of the entire season. They put up eighty points
during the fourth quarter. They had their second highest scoring
second quarter in their history during the second quarter of
this game, put up forty eight points during the second frame.

(00:51):
That all led to them pulling ahead by as many
as twenty six points during this contest. However, down the stretch,
Orlando's backups made an impressive run. Jet Howard thirty points,
Jace Richardson eighteen off the bench. Like these guys were
balling out and they happened to get the Magic back
into the game. But there's a man called Jalen Brown

(01:14):
who is having the best season of his career, who
is leading this Celtics team with his offensive prowess combined
with everything else across the board. He is the man
who would not allow the Magic to grab this comeback win.
Jalen Brown made the two biggest shots of the night.
Jalen Brown scored thirteen points during the fourth quarter alone.

(01:38):
He was the man who put up the stop sign
and said, no, no, no, Orlando Magic, especially the Orlando
Magic second unit, you are not pulling off this comeback,
not tonight, not against us, not in this arena, and
not on move for Heather Night. Jalen Brown made two
three pointers from the left corner right in front of
Orlando's bench, both of them late in the fourth quarter

(02:01):
between five and six minutes left, when as I said,
a twenty six point lead had gone all the way
down to eleven. Then he can to triple right out
of a time out by the Celtics to bump it
back up to Fourteen seconds later, Jace Richardson drills a
three pointer of his own takes it right back down
to eleven. If the Celtics don't score, Orlando certainly has

(02:24):
a ball of momenta behind them, and who knows where
this game would have gone. But instead of not scoring,
it was Jalen Brown yet again from the same spot
on the court, off the same pass, a driving kick
from Jordan Walsh drills it again from the left corner.
And by the way, Jalen Brown has not taken a
whole out of corner threes this season. I believe he's

(02:46):
made about eight to ten of them now, including a
couple tonight. Not a shot that's been consistent in his
shot diet this season. But he made him, and he
made him when the Celtics needed them the most during
this game. And as I said, thirteen points during the
fourth quarter. This was a game where it just seemed

(03:06):
like he was telling the other team, I am not
going to allow you to win this game. Thirty five
points overall, leads the team with eight assists, actually that
tied for the game high. Also grabbed four rebounds, a steal,
fourteen for twenty six from the field, and as I said,

(03:28):
most importantly those two to three pointers from the left
corner and then thirteen total points during the fourth quarter
when Orlando was making that run to get back into it,
it was Jalen Brown who slammed the door shut on
Orlando's attempt to get back into this game. Now, that
offensive outburst during the first half for the Boston Celtics

(03:50):
with eighty points. As I said, their highest scoring half
of the season thus far. It wasn't just Jalen Brown
who was putting up numbers during the first half. We
had Anthony Simon's come off the bench and have another
excellent performance for the Celtics against his hometown team, the
Orlando Magic. He had sixteen off the bench during the

(04:10):
first half, twenty three overall in the game. Josh may
Not came off the bench, had twelve points during the
first half. Actually drilled a three pointer off the dribble
going to his left, something we have not seen him
do before this season.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
His threes have been catching shoots.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
This was an off the dribble, step back three going
to his left, very difficult shot for a right handed shooter.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
Drilled it. So he was great during the first half.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
Peyton Pritchard put up thirteen during the first half to
go along with Jaln Brown scoring fourteen. It just felt
like everything that we didn't see Friday night from the
Boston Celtics in terms of cohesiveness, everyone being on the
same page, the ball popping around, shooting with efficiency, all
of those things that we did not see Friday night.

(05:02):
We saw it during the first half tonight and really
continued into the third quarter as well, and actually, outside
of those few minutes where Orlando made a run, it
was there for a good chunk of the fourth quarter
as well. So just a great job by the Boston
Celtics all around, turning the corner after a tough Friday night.
And by the way, on our pregame show tonight in
this very studio, Brian Scalabrini said, Jalen Brown called out

(05:26):
his teammates after the game Friday night. He said, you
gotta be ready and if you're not ready, don't show up.
Scale said tonight, we're gonna learn a lot about the
rest of the team and as to if they heard
that message and how they respond to that message, well,
we saw how they responded tonight. Everyone played well across

(05:47):
the board. Again, you don't get a twenty six point
lead against a red hot team. And I understand that
the Magic were missing some key players. Three of their
starters were not in this game, But a great response
by everyone on Boston's roster after Jalen Brown made those
comments after a tough Friday night, Celtics were not feeling

(06:09):
good after that loss to the Brooklyn Nets. But they
all turn the corner, get back into their flow during
this game and for the most part, dominate this game
from start to finish, with the exception of a little
bit of a run from the Orlando Magic to get
back into it.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
Great to see.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
This night was so great offensively, I said, the numbers
at eighty points during the first half, forty eight during
the second quarter alone. This night was so great that
we actually saw a Sam Hauser dunk during the second half.
And as I said, the ball was popping. Twenty assists
during the first half alone for the Celtics. They finished
the night with twenty nine all together. Derek White and

(06:48):
Jalen Brown each had eight assists. So really the ball
was just hopping around, had great energy behind it. Felt
like everyone was shooting with great confidence, with great rhythm,
and that's what led to a pretty pressive victory for
the Boston Celtics. Now, let's talk about the other side
of the ball, right, because the Orlando Magic did get
back into this game, and they got back into it

(07:08):
because of players who probably many NBA fans haven't even
heard of before. Okay, this wasn't Franz Wagner getting the
Celtics or getting the Magic back into the game against
the Celtics, Wagner didn't really play well tonight. Fifteen points
in twenty eight minutes of action, wasn't able to really
impact this game, certainly the way he did last night

(07:32):
when he led the Orlando Magic to an impressive win
over the New York Knicks.

Speaker 2 (07:36):
Down in Orlando.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
The guys that got Orlando back into this game are
Jet Howard, who scored thirty points in twenty nine minutes
of this game twelve eleven of twenty three from the field,
five of thirteen from long distance, and then Jase Richardson
eighteen off the bench, seven of eleven from the field,
hit a couple three pointers during the fourth quarter. That

(07:58):
I mean, you just felt like, are these two guys
gonna get them back into the game and they're gonna
win this? And then Noah Penda thirteen points during this game.
So between those three players, sixty one points off the
bench for the Orlando Magic. Just from those three guys,

(08:20):
they gave Orlando a chance. But Jaylen Brown and the
boys said no, no, no, not gonna happen tonight. So impressive.
You gotta call that out right. This isn't just about
the Celtics. That was impressive. What those young guys did
for the Orlando Magic tonight got them back into the game,
but as we said, the Boston Celtics closed the door
on them. Now, the Seas are back in the win

(08:40):
column number one, they are back over the five hundred mark,
number two, and they've got an opportunity later this week
to really figure out where they stand. They got some
tough games coming up Detroit, Cleveland, Minnesota, some really good teams,
physical teams, teams that have certainly a size advanta over
the Boston Celtics. We're gonna find out where the Seas

(09:03):
land later this week. Let's dive into a couple of
fan comments right now, a couple coming in as reactions
to this win by the Boston Celtics on Sunday night
against the Orlando Magic. All right, after this game, I
asked what the key was to the Boston Celtics grabbing
this win, and Doctor Jason responds a little bit sarcastically,

(09:25):
if I do say so myself, Doctor Jason says, ben Caro,
Carter and Wagner not playing. Really, that's what was the
key to the Celtics winning this game. No, it's not
because if you look at the numbers, and I know
people love to get riled up and think, oh, they're

(09:46):
gonna question the Celtics winning a game like tonight simply
because some players didn't play well. No, because the production
that they didn't get the Orlando Magic, the production that
they didn't get from those guys who you missed tonight's game.

Speaker 2 (10:00):
There were a few that you highlighted there.

Speaker 1 (10:03):
Moe Wagner, by the way, who's been out all season long.
Franz did play, and he played not up to the
standards that he's been playing with recently. But you don't
have Boncaro, you don't have Wendell Carter Junior. Those are
two starters for the team. You don't have Jalen Suggs.
But they replaced the Orlando Magic, replaced those guys production

(10:28):
with unbelievable games from the bench. I already talked about this.
Jeed Howard thirty points in twenty nine minutes, Jace Richardson
eighteen points in twenty one minutes. No Apenda thirteen points
and eight boards in twenty three minutes. Like what you
would have gotten from those other guys, you got from them.

(10:49):
So this isn't about who didn't play. This is about
the Boston Celtics taking control of the contest early on
and not allowing the Magic to really have a chance
in this game. I understand how you could come with
this comment and basically just trying to assert that the
Celtics didn't earn this win, they only want it because

(11:10):
of guys who didn't play. But you also have to
take into account that what the Orlando Magic didn't get
from those guys who missed the game, they did get
from other guys who stepped up and had career performances
tonight during this contest. So I don't appreciate the sarcasm.
I hope you appreciate my sarcasm back that your comment,

(11:32):
it just didn't make a whole lot of sense. And
I hope that now you understand that you've got to
look at the whole picture, not just who didn't play.
You gotta look at who did play and what they
did and how far above their standards they went to
make up for those guys who were missing. The Boston
Celtics earned this win. Don't take that away from them,

(11:53):
all right, second and final comment of the night coming
in from Charlie Gestner, who's been getting a lot of
love on this podcast recently. Thanks for chiming in after
these games, Charlie said, after this one great production from
the bench. Houser Simons Miight not all delivered, kept the
turnovers to a minimum which negated getting beat on the glass.

(12:13):
Let's talk about the bench who combined to score what
was it sixty one or so points during this game.
I don't want to do the math right in front
of you, but I'm pretty sure it's in the low
sixties of the points that they scored in this game.
You're gonna win a lot of games when your bench
scores sixty plus points, okay, especially when you've got quality
starters and a superstar, superstar starter in Jalen Brown and

(12:37):
really good guys around him like Peyton Pritchard and Derek White.
This was an all around performance and great to see
that bench mob come together and have a great night
all together. What we have seen for the most part
this season is that it's been like two or three
guys having a good night together. No tonight, it was everyone.
Everyone who came in and played minutes for this team

(13:00):
played very well, even Baylor Shyerman and Ugo Gonzalez, who
each played less than ten minutes, like they played quality
minutes while they were out there. Ugo Gonzalez in particular,
was a plus nine during his nine minutes of action tonight.
So just really great to see those guys getting a
rhythm number one, but number two getting a rhythm together,

(13:21):
because that's the best way that the Celtics are going
to win games in totality this season. We know what
we're gonna get from the starters, okay for the most part,
but you've got to have the bench all playing well
consistently together. Can't be one or two guys here, one
or two guys there. You can't play and win consistently

(13:41):
with that type of inconsistency from your bench. You got
to have all of the guys on the same page.
You got to have all of them feeling comfortable in
their roles and comfortable taking shots, really in making shots,
especially for guys like Simon's and Houser. These guys are
critical offensive pieces for this bat Celtics team. Tonight, everyone

(14:02):
looked like they were feeling great and in rhythm and
feeling good sharing the court with each other. So let's
hope that that continues for sure. Let's dive into a
little bit more of this comment. Kept the turnovers to
a minimum, which negated getting beat on the glass, kept
it to a minimum five turnovers in the game. That

(14:22):
is incredible. That is incredible. The previous low for this
season was six. I didn't think that that was even
possible to beat that. The Celtics committed just five turnovers
during this game. This is the best team in the
NBA at taking care of the basketball, and they have
to beat They don't have the talent that they had

(14:43):
in past seasons where their margins were a little bit
wider to be able to win games. Okay, last year
they could commit fifteen turnovers a game and still win
sixty games. This year, they cannot give away those types
of possessions. They can't give other teams extra possession while
taking them away from themselves. They know that, and that's

(15:03):
why they are the best team in the league at
taking care of the ball, and they showed it again tonight.
Only five turnovers against an Orlando team that has been
known for its defense over the past couple of seasons.
This was impressive. Man Like As I said earlier, as
much as the Celtics didn't look like they were on
the same page Friday night, tonight was a complete one

(15:25):
to eighty. They were on the same page tonight from
start to finish. Even with that little stretch of not
great play during the fourthie, that's okay, you don't have
to play forty eight minutes of perfect basketball. They won
the game and they wanted going away, and they did
it because they were all in unison, they were cohesive,

(15:47):
and they played as one unit. Overall, five turnovers in
the game is an unbelievable number. You're talking about a
near perfect game of taking care of the ball. It's
an incredible, incredible performance by the team as a whole.
They only got beat by seven boards on the night,

(16:08):
and that's gonna happen because the Celtics they didn't miss
a lot of shots, so they didn't have a whole
lot of opportunities for them to grab their own offensive rebounds.
The Orlando Magic did miss many more shots than the
Celtics during this game.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
In fact, the.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
Orlando Magic took twelve more shots and they made six fewers,
so that's an eighteen shot differential between the two teams,
and the Orlando Magic took advantage by grabbing eighteen offensive rebounds. Listen,
it's okay. I'm not concerned about the offensive rebounding. The
team is really the Celtics have turned a corner from
that perspective. I feel good about that, especially when they

(16:47):
can take care of the ball at that level.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
I'm telling you, five turnovers in a game that.

Speaker 1 (16:51):
Is like elite, elite elite, that is like NBA champion
type taking care of the ball. So when you've got
that going for you, you're usually gonna give yourself a chance
to win games. And there haven't been many this season
that the Celtics did not have a chance to pull off. Now,
as I said, the schedule is about to get pretty difficult.

(17:15):
The Celtics did win this game tonight. The Orlando Magic
came in here red hot. I don't care who didn't play.
This team has been playing great basketball. Orlando had won
six of seven and eight of excuse me, nine of
twelve heading into this game. Well, Boston said, no, no, no,
you're not grabbing a win here. And now the Celtics
have an opportunity to do the same against some really

(17:36):
good teams here coming up Wednesday night, the Detroit Pistons
come to town. It's the best team in the EASE
so far this year. Saturday at Minnesota, Sunday at Cleveland,
and then Tuesday back here against the New York Knicks.
That's four of the better teams in the NBA all

(17:58):
coming up over the course of the next week or so.
So we're gonna find out a lot about the Boston
Celtics here starting Wednesday when they play host to the
East leading Detroit Pistons. We haven't said that in about
eighteen seventeen, eighteen years.

Speaker 2 (18:13):
Well we're saying it right now.

Speaker 1 (18:14):
The Pistons are playing some great basketball and they're gonna
bring that locomotive train here to Boston for a showdown
at five o'clock on New Year's Eve. After that game,
we will have another episode of SoundOff. We'll have it
both on YouTube and on your favorite podcast platforms.

Speaker 2 (18:29):
Listen.

Speaker 1 (18:29):
I need you all to send in your comments after
these games, all right. I need some new people to
be telling me what they're thinking after these Boston Celtics games.
Hopefully it's after a win on Wednesday. I'll see you
there again. This is the sound Off Postgame podcast. Presented
