Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello, friends, Welcome to his Biology Squad. We are a
team of spies who specialize in science. You see doctor
Stinky Breath in the Purple Ninjas are trying to take
over the world through science, and it is up to
us to stop them before it is too late. On

(00:25):
the last episode, we saw that Ava and Jaden have
discovered something crazy going on with stink bugs multiplying very quickly.
And now mister Jim found a bunch of cane toads.
Oh dear, that sounds like an ecological nightmare. Let's see
what happens next. Happen ninjas? I need update?

Speaker 2 (00:48):
Why am I seeing all these toads hopping around my backyard? A?

Speaker 3 (00:56):
Yeah, about that, they're actually here to help. But the
stink come problem.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Oh yeah, fellow Kova's hair, Doctor Sticky Breath was pointing
to a cane toad over in the corner of his
backyard that had a baby red bird in its mouth.
I love soors of red birds, and that cane toad
seems to be eating everything in my backyard except for

(01:22):
ossy stinky box.

Speaker 3 (01:24):
Oh oh, what do you mean? They aren't eating the
stink box, No, eating everything else.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
My favorite critters all my stinky flowers everything.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
You got to fix this now.

Speaker 3 (01:43):
Hey guys, they guys, do you know how to do that?

Speaker 1 (01:47):
But I don't. I don't know what you're talking about.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
We're gonna need a little bit more time. We're not
exactly sure how to do that. The cane toads, they
kind of freak us out a little bit.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
Ninja's zeez, what's your plan? Is the first place? Meanwhile,
across town, mister Jim had just arrived at Biology squad HQ,
and Ava and Jaden were in the back room. Mister
Jim scanned his access card and the door opened. Hey guys, wait,

(02:21):
I thought you were Ava, Jada, where are you? We're
back here, shouted Jaden. Oh what are you guys doing
all the way back here? Wait? Ava, what are you doing?
Ava just walked out in a full beekeeper suit, which
mister Jim was not expecting. Ava cleared her throat and said,

(02:43):
me and bugs even been getting along very recently, So
this is what I'm going to be wearing today and
for the time being. Oh my, said mister Jim. What's
going on with all the bugs? Jaden poked his head
out from the back closet and said, Uh, well, we
were running around our neighborhood and like a jillion stink

(03:06):
bugs were flying around stinking up my higher neighborhood. And
then we took one back to the lab and look
at this. He brought mister Jim over to the lab
counter where they had been doing all their experiments, and
now that one had turned into a couple thousand. You're
kidding me, said mister Jim. How in the world did

(03:28):
it reproduce that quickly? It like skipped all of its
uh normal steps of like egg and larvae. And yeah,
that's why we're really concerned about it, said Jaden. Yep,
and that's why I'm wearing a beekeeper suit, said Ava
in the back. That is so weird because like over

(03:48):
in my neighborhood there's like cane toads everywhere. Do you
guys know what cane toads are. Nope, not a clue,
said Jaden. Okay, you see, cane toad a known for
just eating everything like they they love to eat, and
they've been used throughout history to try and solve problems,

(04:09):
like in Australia a long time ago, they had this
serious problem of these beetles ate eating a lot of
their crops, and so they thought, hmm, let's find a
super hungry and well that can eat all these beetles
to save their crops. That makes sense, right, asked mister Jim. Yeah,
or they could have just sent Jaden, said Ada, Hey, yes,

(04:32):
we could have sent Jaden because he does like to eat.
But everyone thought this was a great idea of sending
a cane toad to eat all those bugs that were
eating all the people's food. But it actually made it worse,
said mister Jim. You see, all those cane toads, they
just like to eat everything, and so they ate a
ton of the native wildlife that was not a part

(04:54):
of the original plan. You see, you cannot tell toads
what to eat. You can't program them. They will just
eat whatever is nearby, and they can cause a huge
strain on the ecological system. That ecological what, asked Jaden,
Like an ecosystem? You know, every forest is an ecosystem

(05:17):
or every pond, and ecosystem means a biological community of
interacting organisms and their physical environment. Basically, you know, it's
an area where critters live in that environment is like
specially made for those critters. But if you introduce a
critter that doesn't live there and move them into that
new ecosystem. It can mess everything up, and that's what

(05:37):
we're seeing right now with this cane toad, said mister Jim.
So how do we get rid of the cane toads?
Asked Jaden and the stink bugs? Shouted Ava. Well, we
need to capture the sink bugs and return them to
whatever their original genetic code is before they started over
reproducing here, and also catch the cane toads before the

(06:01):
whole ecosystem gets out of control. Ava, are you catching
the bugs or the toads? Are you kidding me? Said Ava?
I am team toad today. Put me as the toad catcher.
Then I guess that means I am the bug man,
said Jaden as he ran over and grabbed as many
nets as he could. Actually, Jaden, why don't you use

(06:24):
the bug vacuum, said mister Jim. It's in the back closet.
Holy smokes, this thing's ginormous, shouted Jaden as he pulled
it out of the closet. All right, Ava, let's get
to work. I'll help you catch those toads, said mister Jim.
Ava and mister Jim strapped down their jetpacks and off
they blasted. Hmm. Jaden had to use his bug vacuum

(06:48):
to start sucking up all those stink bugs. As mister
Jim and Ava zoomed around their city collecting all these toads,
he found them eating all kinds of things squirrels, birds, plants.
One of them even had a puppy's leg in its mouth. Oh,
these cane toads can be pretty crazy on what they

(07:11):
choose to eat. Hey, let's take a break and check
it in on how Jaden's going with his bug vacuum. Sh. Hey, Jaden,
mister Jim wants to know how your bug vacuuming is
going on. I hope you've caught every single one of
those disgusting things, said Ava. Sh. Yeah, it's pretty good.

(07:31):
I've filled up three truckloads so far. Sh did you
say three truck loads? Like three trucks full of stick bugs?

Speaker 3 (07:42):
Sh?

Speaker 1 (07:43):
Yeah, it smells pretty terrible, but I'm on my way
back to HQ to work on switching their genetics back
to normal. How's it going with you and your toads? Sh?
You won't believe what these toads are trying to eat.
But yeah, I think we're almost done, and I just
have of why. I don't know. We probably got ten
thousand of them down to South America where they're naturally from. Wow,

(08:08):
great job, Ava and mister Jim. Uh. After you're done
with that, let's meet back at HQ over and out
back at doctor Stinky Brett's house. He was looking out
the window Peveron Ninjas. He looks like toads are finally gone.
How did you do that? Give me update on stinkbugs too?

(08:29):
I don't see them, is a but I want to
get the stink spread all over the world. Reber Najas, where.

Speaker 3 (08:37):
Are you, hey, boss? Up or over here?

Speaker 1 (08:43):
Why does it look like you're hiding from me?

Speaker 3 (08:48):
Well, the answer to your question, yes, all the toads
and bunks are gone.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
Is that that wasn't my question. How did you do that?
Since where are the.

Speaker 3 (08:59):
Well it wasn't us.

Speaker 1 (09:01):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (09:02):
Yes, the toads they're gone, so that's not a problem anymore.
But unfortually the stink bugs are gone too.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
How is that possible?

Speaker 2 (09:13):
There was best sink bugs I've ever seen who did this?

Speaker 3 (09:19):
Well, it was spiology is one. We're pretty sure how
in the world they do that they had some kind
of bug vacuum That.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
Bug vacuum cover Ninjas, however, be defeated by a vacuum cleaner.

Speaker 1 (09:41):
By the end of the day, Eva Jaden and mister
Jim had captured every single toad and returned it to
its natural habitat, and all of those stink bugs they
were able to change back to their normal genetic code.
Holy smokes, what an amazing adventure and I hope we

(10:03):
all learned that we got to make sure that we
protect our ecosystems, especially from stinkbugs trying to take over
the world with doctor Stinky Breath. Wow, great jobs, Biology Squad,
you all save the day. You know what time it is,
It's time for some spiology shout outs. I want to

(10:25):
say hey to Carter Jamison, Finula Harlem, Spire, Hazel Hudson, Harvey,
and Briar. I'm so glad that you're all on this
biology squad. We could not stop doctor Stinky Breath and
his crew without you, my friends. Well, if you want

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
